Mine does it on occasion. I got it to lessen slightly by uninstalling gsam battery monitor. It gets bad on mine playing hd games.

If you're running Venom 4.0 (Sense 5 4.2.2 Base), and your phone is getting hot, it's essentially a bad flash.
Try this:
Recovery
Nandroid (as always)
Wipe: System, Cache, Dalvik/Cache
Factory Reset
Wipe: Dalvik/Cache
Install ROM, Beastmode Kernel 2.0, Beastmode Kernel 3.5 (add these zips to your flashing all in a row). Choose your voltages in Beastmode 3.5.
Once you've set up your phone, be sure to download something like CPU Tuner or NoFrills CPU Tuner. Charge to 100% and ensure you set your CPU Tuner app to whatever voltages you want, hit apply on boot, and then reboot.

I have been having this same problem. I recently started to use data on my phone and as soon as i enable it my phone gets extremely hot and slow, and the battery starts to run down extremely fast. Does anyone know of a fix for this?

More information required. Is your phone stock or modified? If it's modified what ROM/kernel/radio are you using?
Sent from my Evita

Hey thanks for the quick reply.
Phone is stock, but has been rooted and s-offed
I am running 3.18.502.6 710RD
kernel: 3.4. 10-g310e8f1
baseband: 0.24p.32.09.06_10.130.32.34L
I am using this in New zealand if it makes any difference, bought this one x cheap off ebay and bought an unlock code for it. txt's and callling works fine

Ok, so you're running the stock at&t ROM and the at&t radio. How is the signal strength in the area you're using the device? You can find the specific strength by looking in Settings/About Phone/Network (where -51db is good strength and -110db is poor strength).
If you're dealing with poor signal strength that might explain why the phone heats up so much and the battery dies so quickly, it'd be working too hard to maintain a solid connection.
Following on from that, if you find you have poor strength, it might be worth experimenting with some different radios (baseband). Even if your strength is ok, trying out a few different radios could yield a positive result.
Sent from my Evita

Also, the AT&T version is locked to having the LTE radio on, which means its constantly looking for AT&T's LTE network, which may be contributing to the battery drain.
This is assuming you are not using LTE, since the carriers have done a pretty good job of having no standard bands between countries/regions.
You might consider flashing a non-AT&T ROM, as it will let you turn off the LTE radio. In addition, since you are s-off, you can try other radios as timmaaa suggested.

no but im not a fan of this new radio.
I agree the radio is great. Just im cooking eggs with my tb.

i have been experiencing the same thing... big time !
regardless of what rom i use, sense/de-sense or aosp, the phone gets really hot after awhile. i've had a few instances where it got so hot that it froze the phone and i had to yank the battery and let it cool down.
for the hell of it, tried going back to an older radio and the problem went away.
damn.. did have a tad bit better battery on the new radio as well as a very slight improvement in reception... but considering the consequences of the new radio, it's better just to stick to an older one for now.
Was this only happening when using a 3G/4G connection or all the time? I haven't experienced that but I only switched to the new radio a few days ago and haven't done any long term mobile data usage with it yet. I do seem to pick up 4G at my work quicker and in places in the building where I couldn't before.

I thought I was the only one experiencing this. When I use it too much it gets like this. Or when I play madden 12 it gets that way too

I know i read if you undervolt it too much it can cause a phone to run hot if done incorrectly. Causes phone to work harder since it needs more power.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Refering to a couple of the posts above, i am in a 3G only area but i do heavy usage(web, movies) so the phone will be on for a few hours at a time.
As for "undervolting", i use DreamKernal + SetCPU and just overclock to like 1222. I also have a profile set so when the screen is off it is set to max out at 368.
Oh, and for the heck of it tried that VZW thing with pulling the battery to reset location and.it didnt help with the heat either.
On a positive note, at least if your hands are cold(or other body part), then hey!
i think the kernels have alot to do with the heat as well. i doubt the leaked 802 radio will harm anyone's phone. i will admit its a very wonky radio for me. ive just recently combined the cdma 627 radio and the lte 802 radio and all is well. i went 23hrs on a stock battery with lte on all the time. im running cm7+kangbang kernel.

I've been running the latest leak (2.11) rooted, along with the latest radios, for about a week now, and haven't noticed the back getting any hotter than it did before. I'll have to pay more attention and see.

Kernel+Radios=Bad reception ?

Hi there, I have a question!! Is it possible that a kernel x with radio x can interfere with the cellphone reception and cause bad reception on devices?
I used to be on aosp iml74k build 3 with Eugene's kernel and now I'm on glados 2.7 that comes with CyberGr Mod v3 Hybrid_ics rom and always used xxxkb3 radio. When I installed the new rom I did a full clean install even format my SD card.
Used to have at least umts and more but now after reboot or battery pulled I'm always on 2g and my settings are ok I checked it.
Am I missing something or it's not compatible?
Thanks in advance!!

Cant really say for NS4g but gsm phones have multiple radios to choose from this is really only way to improve your signal
if you guy have more radios to choose from old or new try flashing another radio.
some have better luck with older some with newer
Or wait for proper ICS OTA for your 4g phone that will include new radio

[Q] Slow and laggy Nexus S HELP

Hi,
I use the newest AOSP+ and Glados 2.7 kernel on my Nexus S. I experience a lot of lags while opening apps. I tap on the icon, the app launches and I wait 1-4 seconds (depending on the app) then the content is loaded. No matter if it is SMS app, Call logs, Facebook, even Market or Appbrain. Usually after the reboot things go well for a while. But then everything slow down. Even the apps as native Phone app in ICS is very very slow while opening even though it is not killed. I think it is something with RAM, right? I used to have HTC Desire (the first model) and my Nexus is at the same speed!!! It is not right!
Can you help me with this? Where is the problem?
Wipe and reflash. Try a different kernel. Make sure its supported for the nexxxy

Ok, I did a full wipe, reflashed and got back all the apps using Titanium Backup. I get the same problem again. Before I installed all the apps, phone was really much faster. I do not know where is the problem.
What causes app opening lags? Shall I somehow track RAM to find out? Or what? Can some widgets on homescreens cause lags? Or Go Launcher?
I am really desperate. I use just stable ROM and kernels and my phone is still lagy as I would have two years old smartphone (
How mamy apps do you have on the phone?

I have 82 apps. I also tried it as the new setup for the first time I flashed this ROM. I experienced the same problem when I had HTC Desire. Maybe there is an app causing this. Is it processor or RAM or what?
This is weird. I never had this problem. Maybe try unrooting and flashing back to stock. Then updating the the official 2.3.6 which will be avail once u flash back to stock. See if the stock rom is slow as well

I have experienced the same that you have, with my Nexus becoming slow and laggy. I use an MIUI rom though. I mostly experience this when my RAM is full or close to full. Usually, what I do is either clear my RAM by killing apps from a task manager or rebooting, and then it goes back to silky smooth for me. I'm not sure if this is the same problem that you have though.
Did you try using a task manager to clear tasks?
No. I will not use task manager on phone as Nexus S. Why shall I do this on such a device. Task managers are for slower phones. AND I read very clever article about saving battery life. You can read there that Android manage the tasks on its own much better. Task killers usually don't work as they should or as the user think they do. They will usually slow down the apps which should be loaded in RAM.
ANYWAY... I found the problem. I use NSTools and there is the feature "Deep Idle" - this feature saves battery A LOT!!! (When phone is idle 5+ hours with wi-fi, it takes only 1-2% which is great). But this causes the problem whit loading apps. So I turned it off. Now I have problem with battery life which is a little bit worse.
So now, I need better kernel and also radio (my wi-fi has very poor signal even though it is closed to the router)

[Q] [SOLVED] Random shutdowns / turning off.

Hey guys,
The topic of this thread has change slightly since I started it. Please disregard the first few posts after this one.
The problem is that when I install a new ROM, it works perfectly for an hour or perhaps even the day, and then I start getting random shutdowns. These seem to start out of the blue and I cant work it out.
When installing a new ROM, I always check the MD5 and perform a superwipe before starting to use the ROM. Ill put back a few apps using titanium backup pro.
I don't use any hacked apps or task killers.
I have searched but cant find anything useful.
Currently using Insertcoin Sense 4 RC5. Firmware 3.32.
I have tried three different kernals (Bricked, Sebastian and RCMix), all with the same problem.
Update: tjamaican has kindly sent me a fix he found of the forums, its for a battery fix that worked for me on insertcoin's ICS Sense 4 RC4.1 ROM. However I have just moved to RC5 and the problem is back even with the fix.

I am going to try and set a lower CPU level, already down to 1.2 Ghz with max screen off at ~500Mhz. Seems stable for now, been running 24hrs - no restarts.
This is interesting because I had a GB Rom running at 1.5Ghz with no problems, maybe its something to do with ICS.
Any ideas?
[SOLVED]
Sent the phone off to htc and they have replaced the motherboard. Its all fine and dandy now!
They dont know why it happened or how to avoid it in the future...useful, but if you're still in warranty then send it off, it took exactly a week to get back to me (Monday to Monday). Good luck!

Well no need for factory reset. Superwipe? Yes.

Thanks for your reply.
No, the phone is basically new, but as I said this has happened before.
Running this ROM on 3.24:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1468683
But this does happen on other ROMS too, they work perfectly for a while and then slowly begin to develop problems. At this stage I usually install the latest version of the ROM but I'm actually happy with the ROM at the moment and dont want to have to keep changing it!
I've been running Darkforest ROM since early stages and have had no problems so far. Maybe try that one. It's on v 5.1.5 now and it's very fast and very stable, moreso than many other ROMs i've tried.
Could be a defective device possibly? Are u using the kernel that comes with the rom?

I would download 1-click cleaner and clean the cache every week. Also you might want to boot into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache every two weeks.

Could possibly be an app try removing all your apps and install 1 by 1 give it a couple of weeks see if it happens again, I got a problem from juice defender pro (payed for) worked alright for few days then my launcher started force closing all the time took me ages to figure it out but got there by removing all my apps and installing them 1 by 1 long and time staking but worth a try

its not a problem, its with network connection
I've had this problem since ages and couldn't fix it yet. First thing, download LTE switch and change the value from wcdma preferred to gsm auto. see if it avoids the restarts. Another thing you can try is, change the sim card (I havent tried it yet). Or, if possible, change the back cover. But I'm pretty pretty sure its the problem with the network.

Well I have been at the 1.2GHz level for almost 24 hours now without too much trouble. Im not sure if it was lowering the CPU clock for screen on, or raising the CPU clock for screen off. Either way I can notice the device is slightly slower. I dont see why ICS doesnt like overclocking on this phone, GB was fine with it?!

Hey all,
I have a very fun and exciting cell phone now thanks to rooting my phone and installing the Virtuous Inquisition ROM on my phone.
However, now that I've done all that, I've got the itch to do more to my phone. I really like VI as a ROM, but is there anything else I can do to my phone?

I've been tempted to flash hypernonsense too, as its basically like an updated VI. How is firmware 3.33, do you have any wifi signal issues and if so where are you based? Its the only thing holding me back, as I've seen people saying that their wifi is affected after upgrading to 3.33.

I'm in the UK, 3G signal strength is improved and wifi is no different than it was in VI - it all works perfectly including tethering.
The biggest improvement is battery life - over 1d 16hrs, with 5 to 7hrs screen on time is the norm now (using the Anker 1900).

I have no idea, never installed either of those. I aim for a lightweight ROM with maximum battery life as I need the phone for what it can do, rather than eyecandy and features I don't use.
It's as close to an AOSP ROM that has everything working, if that helps.
