Hi guys.
I have recently upgraded to the HTC One Mini and I have to say that I'd love this handset if it wasn't for the fact that the plastic edge/chassis keeps cracking. I am on my second handset as Vodafone were happy enough to replace my first one when I reported this issue to them but it has happened again on my second. These small cracks were not there when I first got either of the two handsets but seemed to appear after a few days of use. I have been back to the store again and they will replace the handset or let me change to a different model/brand so there is no issue there. My question are: Has anyone else had this issue? As I can't seem to find any info on other instances. And, Does it's big brother the HTC One have the same issue as I may upgrade to that?
Cheers guys any info would be appreciated.
So I got mine from Vodafone the first day they came out ..your post has had me scurrying to a bright light to check.
So far no cracks...pheeeew
Where do they appear for you...can you take a picture? Are they the same place each time?
Can you think of anything you may be doing that could trigger it? Heat etc
All the best,
Sam

I do have photographs but I can't upload or link them as I don't have enough posts. I will do it when I achieve the 10 post mark.
The situation at the moment is that the Vodafone store manager has passed photos onto the local HTC rep and we are awaiting a response. As for potential causes I have no idea as I am particularly careful with my phone's (to protect resale values) and even more so as this is a brand new handset.

Hi, I'm planning on getting this phone in a few days. If you want you can PM me the pictures and I'll upload them in this thread for you. Otherwise you can probably upload them to an image hosting site and then link to them.
I experianced the same issue !
I preordered the mobile, I got it like a month now. I take care of this mobile. It never fell on anything.
But it has this mini mini cracks on the plastic edge (left corner, downside.)
It wasnt there when I got the phone, but it appeared from nothing !
Same as yours.
I guessed that the phone got hot while charging, and the aluminium started getting a little bigger. So the plastic was pushed outside and cracked.

after 5 days no problems and no cracks, i keep you updated if something happens.
I received mine device yesterday and have spotted no cracks.
wonder if this is vodafones (euro) mini or the US as well. I'm abit hesitant now on picking this up with a chance that the plastic frame might start cracking later on.
Hopefully this will work. There are a couple more cracks on other photos but I have left them on my laptop at work.

Not much has changed since my last post I have noticed one more crack and I am still waiting for the store manager to get back to me with feedback from the HTC rep, I may pop in tomorrow to follow up on the issue.

also have a small crack at the volume down button... and I even use a silicon case
mine is from Vodafone-DE.
Is everyone having this problem using this a Vodaphone user or is it happening on all carrier's versions?
I hate to say it but mine is still crack free. Got it from Vodafone UK on the 17th August.
Crossing my fingers here...
Hi,
I have also two cracks, one at the volume down button, and one at the bottom side of my mobile.
Vodafone DE will replace it, but actually they know nothing about this problem. Looking forward to my replaced mobile.

Same cracks at exactly the same positions, also with Vodafone-DE.
I will wait for the black-version - don't think it will work, but maybe I will get a new black one
i have one on mine near the bottom... its a new AT&T model
its not serious enough for me to be bothered... pretty much every HTC phone ive ever had has had some sort of manufacturing defect like this (HD2, Sensation, MT4G, One, One Mini)
i've got about three cracks on mine from ATT- doesn't seem like too big of a deal but if it leads to something (for anyone) we should all agree to come back here and say.
Got a new device, warranty by VF DE. Actually no cracks, production date 01.09.2013.
Hopefully better quality...

Is this a hardware or software issue? It's pretty annoying. I can't scroll or type fast anymore because the screen can't keep up. If its a hardware issue I bet HTC will stay quiet about it, but if its software related I want it fixed ASAP. I absolutely can not use the phone like this.

I noticed this too, especially when typing.
I've never had any speed issues.... I text pretty fast and it's smooth as butter. Scrolling is especially great on mine....pages FLY up/down.
Just to let you know...that's not normal for the Sensation. It should be fast.... on properly working ones.... like mine
Do a factory reset AND a battery pull...if it still does it, there is a problem.
Make sure nothings slowing it down....bad app, launcher etc.
Love this phone...would never need anything faster
Good luck!

I wonder also is this a hardware or software issue? i really don't want to return mine device because i know how long i have to wait to repair it (i am sure the retailer will not exchange it for a new one because this is Bulgaria where i live).
Mine is with SN: HT 15EV, Taiwan made, Sharp LCD and i have the grounding issue- if the phone is not in my hand i cannot unlock it...
I want somebody to confirm if it's a hardware issue and to know what to do- return it or wait for a fix

So far everyone been returning it, just in case it is a hardware problem. BUT! The one i got replacement for, is still sitting at my home (they failed to pick it up twice now). Out of interest, i pulled it out, started it and guess what-no issue at all, no matter how hard i tried to replicate it. I have done factory reset before and it didn't help. but factory reset + keeping it turned off for a week seemed to eliminate the problem. So i sort of look like software problem, but why initial factory reset didn't help then?
Guys, I had this problem yesterday and here's some observations.
- I had this problem after a long charge about 9 hours.
- I couldn't unlock in normal way. I was able to unlock only if I slide that ring from its left side when I wasnt touching the phone. Might be dislocation problem.
- I've tried with a different lockscreen app(GoTo Lockscreen) this problem didn't occur.
- Pulled out the battery for a few minutes then put it back like HTC said. Didn't seem to solve the problem. Then I've deleted other launchers and rebooted. That seemed to solve.
Mine has gone to the HTC service centre in the UK, due to this issue. Will report back as to what they do.
My gut feeling says software. The reason I say this is I also own a Thunderbolt which is running a port of the Shooter RUU and it runs absolutely buttery smooth. The Thunderbolt has 768mb of RAM, same as ours, but is using the 2nd gen snapdragon chipset (single core). So certainly its a far weaker device hardware wise but can run Sense 3.0 flawlessly.
I just wrote an article about the issue. If you guys could share it around I'd really appreciate it.

Yeah, good article. I'm on day 4, so "it" hasn't hit, yet. 2 questions: is the EVO S-Off out of the box, and is the one you tested rooted? I would guess not. Hoping against hope that when we're rooted and can get rid of the damn bloat, things will be majorly different. Second, what real-world benefit does Gingerbread actually provide over FroYo? I had thought FroYo was somehow JIT-optimized, but that GB was from the get go and would solve all of the world's problems? Can anyone explain exactly what the benefit of GB is, and whether it can/will not be a benefit until root? TIA...
Hello everyone,
Well after glancing this thread, I've noticed that there have been known problems related with touchscreen, dust, and battery life. I can get a brand new sensation sealed for 320 $ off contract. Is it worth it with all these problems? I had a g2x and sold it due to its problems and it seems like the sensation has more problems than the g2x. Also, I won't have a receipt so I can't exchange it like many of you if I have a problem.
I currently have a nexus S that will be faster than the stock sensation. The reason I want to buy this phone is because I need more space and I have a 32 gb sdhc laying around that I can use.
I know that the dust as well as unresponsive touchscreen will be a big annoyance. However, the price makes it so tempting.
What are your thoughts?
Thanks
The risk is that phone may have death grip issue.
Almost every single smart-phone released within the last 2 years, android or otherwise has had a similar concoction of problems, either screen, dust, battery, whatever.
I've had 0 issues with my device and am amazingly happy.

Thanks for your input. However, my nexus S has been working perfectly with no dust, touchscreen issues etc. I just wish it would have a microsd slot
I would steer well clear of the Sensation until the bootloader situation is resolved. It is pointless 'downgrading' in terms of the performance you will get out of the box and pointless leaving a device that works perfectly for one with a variety of niggling issues.

It's a dice roll, and no one here has the facts to know what the risks are of getting a bad phone.
It has yet to be determined if the wifi and touchscreen issues are HW or SW or some combination. There's evidence that supports each conclusion. Battery life is probably related to usage, sync options, and some apps, so can be tweaked as on all phones. If the upcoming SW update from HTC resolves the wifi and screen response problems then I'd say the phone is probably worth risking. If not, then who knows?
Without knowing the exact causes and the actual failure rates all you'll get are guesses. My advice, if you buy it have a plan B on how to exit if it turns bad.
I got my sensation launch day, 0 problems except that the front facing camera doesn't outperform many other smartphone ffc's in low light.
You should buy that phone, and you should PM me and tell me how I can get one for that price.
Unless there's just one, then you shouldn't buy it and just tell me how I can.

I'd steer clear for now just because it seems like the stock rom is going to be a lot laggier than what the Nexus S has to offer. It's laggier even than the Evo3D, for some reason.
Chuck in the battery life, dust under the screen and the probability that you'll develop the touchscreen wonkiness over time, and I'd wait until it's been properly updated
No issues on my end.. phone is working great for me. I think the battery life issue is way overblown (power users who will never find an OEM willing to make a battery that meets their needs but is overkill for the average user). The tech blogs show the the Sensation to be above average and better than the other "superphones" I checked; http://www.laptopmag.com/review/cell-phones/htc-sensation-4g.aspx?mode=benchmarks&cids=2804,2800,pa
I find it highly convenient that you chose to link to one of the few sites that rated the Sensation above its main rival. I'm not saying the Sensation is a bad device as I would have bought one weeks ago had the bootloader been unlocked or HTC bothered to release a timetable for it. However the fact remains that the vast majority of sites put the Sensation second in every category bar build quality and Sense (which comes down to personal preference and at least you have the option to change things on rival devices).
So your giving advice and you dont even own the phone?
I find it funny you guys mentioned dust under screen like it's widespread issue everyone has. But truthfully it's not . Nor does every phone suffer from screen responsive issues.
I know these for a fact cause I had 3 sensations none of them had the same issues. In fact none of them had dust under the screen. The phone I have in my hands right now. Has been nothing short of perfect. I have not had any issues.

Not giving you a hard time, I've just seen way too many posts saying the phone was perfect for X days, then all of a sudden it started degrading. Same happened to me, 5 days perfect, by day 7 totally dead. Hopefully I'll get lucky on the replacement, but I'm only semi-optimistic.

Hey guy, so I'm gonna be returning my 3rd Inspire this coming week.
The 1st one had a few dead pixels and was returned within the initial 30 day grace period through at&t.
The 2nd time the actual screen started to seperate from the frame of the phone and would float near the corners and what I mean is you could lightly push down on the screen in certain spots and see it lift and rise.
When I got the second one, which I have now, it was fine then the GPS completely stopped working and I went to a warranty supper center where you would go after the original 30 day period.
I took it in there with the GPS issue and the guy wouldn't do anything for me and gave me the number for HTC and told me to call them myself and deal with them.
Now, the screen is floating again, and my phone has never been dropped or damaged.
I don't want to put up with this BS anymore and I want a new phone.
I got tired of my Inspire not correctly working and went and bought a Nexus S off contract. I'm happy with it.
What I'm asking is, should I just have it replaced and sell the new one to get some money back for the Nexus purchase or ***** and complain to at&t for a completely different phone?

Very easy on my phone and always handle it with care, it cost a lot of money. Lol
I'm very anal which could also be my problem, but with cost of the phone, contract, insurance and everything else included, I should not have to deal with such issues.

Its hard for me to imagine such a solidly built device having so many problems, but yet all i hear is constant complaints from my wife about hers. Lagging or freezing, battery drains etc. it doesnt make any sense to me because I don't have any of theose problems with mine.
Hers was one of the first run as she got it on the day they came out. I wonder if that makes a difference?
I work at one of those device support centers you went to.
That screen issue is a manufacturers defect we've seen a couple of times.
I wouldn't bother calling ATT for a different model phone. They won't do it for you. I'm not saying it to be mean, but just so you don't waste your time. To warranty policy, that first exchange you did within the first 30 days doesn't count towards a warranty exchange. That guy at the device support center should have exchange it though.
If you don't mind, in a private message I would love your phone number so I can look up who handled your ticket in Opus and the date you went there. I know it's asking a lot, but a customer being handled like that needs to be reported to my bosses. Delgreco, and whatever the girls name that took his place at the moment while he's on leave, will not like that.
I would go back to the DSC and see if they will replace it. If they don't, get their ATUID and the managers name, as well as the location, and ask for their store code and shoot me a private message. If worse comes to worse I can do an XBM for you, but I would need pictures of your LDI and the screen stuff sent to me.
Anyway, PM me and keep your personal information, if you choose to go that route, of the forums.

I thank you for that thank you. As I was explaining partially to the OP in PM, the way this rep handled him makes me and the rest of the company that handles the DSCs look bad. At the DSCs, we understand dealing with anyone over the phone is a very big hassle. In fact, we try and keep customers off the phone at our location. Sorry to them, but the script monkeys aren't that helpful. The idea of the DSC is to put the customer in a face to face position with some one both helpful and knowledgeable.
With that said, I will happily extend an open invitation to any XDA member to PM me with questions or concerns. I'm not going to lie and say I can help everyone, but I will try my best.
At this point I would like to help the OP get his situation resolved. If there is no liquid or physical damage to his Inspire, then he has every right to a working device and should no be treated with such disregard.

Look at getting it replaced, especially if the camera lens is not aligned close to center in the back of the phone. We have been seeing a trend with the first run of the Inspires with issues like the screen popping up, the bottom volume button becoming jammed, camera not working, and phone not turning on.
If you're willing to wait until tuesday I can send you a list of where the DSCs are in your area if there are any, if not the WSC line would, *hopefully* be able to give it to you quicker.
I'd like to know if there is a DSC in my area. Greenville sc.

I really love this phone but the build quality that HTC use to be SOOO well known for seems to have gone out the window. I bought the AT&T One X when it first came out and had to have it replaced atleast 3 different times before my 30 days were up due to a number of different issues. The last one I got I've had for probably 2 months now and everything had been great up until a couple days ago. About a quarter of the way up the screen from the bottom does not recognize touch. If I use an app or something to draw a line down the screen, when I get to that spot it leaves a blank area and then the line starts again when I get past that area. One whole row on the keyboard I can't use any of the letters and atleast one of those letters is part of my gmail address so I can't enter it. When I'm scrolling in say the settings menu, the screen will be real jittery if my finger goes into the area where it's dead at or it will think I'm pressing instead of scrolling and randomly open up menus or apps. I do have insurance on the phone but I know it's not something they will swap in store since I'm past my 30 days so it will have to probably have to be sent for repair and I can almost guarantee they will update it to the latest release so I won't be able to root or anything else. Just curious if anyone else has had issues with the touch screen going out on there One X?
Sucks sorry to hear about your phone... Just terrible bad luck

The one I have now seems to be the most usable but there are still a bunch of problems (wifi signal fluctuates a ton, loud rattling noise when using vibrate). I've never seen a phone this nice but with so many quality control issues. All of the One X's I've had have gotten really hot with use.

ive never had any problems with this phone whatsoever, (Knock on wood) other than getting alittle warm playing a game while its charging
I feel your pain, bro. I purchased my Intl One X at full price at the time, which was $669.00 USD. It died two weeks later when the charging/data port stopped working. I sent it into HTC and after many phone calls to Tier 2 escalations and 2 months, they finally told me they could not repair my phone because of an Apple injunction on importing the motherboards to the US. This is how I came to be with the One XL.
The whole experience was IMO completely ridiculous and I've never experienced such horrible customer service from any company ever. They even tried to charge me to diagnose the problem with my phone. I fought them and got them to pay for the fee themselves. If I had paid it, would they have refunded it a month later when they told me that they couldn't fix my phone? Doubt it!
I got to use my original One X for a full two weeks before it died. Spent 2 months badgering HTC America about where my phone is, when is it going to be fixed, whats wrong with it, etc... only to be told "Sorry, you're ****ed!"
This story repeats itself tons of times in the One X forums from many different users. While I think the One XL is sweet (only because of LTE, if I had to use HSPA+ I'd still be really pissed and probably wouldve just sold it) I'll never buy or recommend HTC again.
Yeah I'm on my third now. Speaker keeps dying. Volume is so low that it's impossible to hear anything.
Htc fanboys might hate apple and samsung as much as they want but truth is that none of those companies have customers that still have problems with their phone even after getting the 10th replacement

Because although not illegal, it's clearly immoral. Why do you think the cost of insurance has gone thru the roof?
It's because of (insert appropriate insult here) like you that suggest she do something like that.

Cool story Hansel, show me one supporting link that suggests unlocked bootloader returns are the reason for high insurance rates. Tell me it's the modding communities fault and not every Tom, ****, and Harry that returned their phone because it was too quiet, too bright or it hurt their feelings.
Any other burning questions Gertrude?

3 months ago I would have disagreed w you. But now I totally concur. The QC of HTC is just horrendous.

Apple? Sure. But Samsung? No. I just bought the HTC One X because I replaced my Galaxy S III so many times for various problems that AT&T would not exchange it anymore. Also, my third Nexus 7 is on the way. I think quality control has gone downhill across the board.
Hi Everyone,
My girlfriend lost her iphone 4s a few weeks ago. I've found a one x for a great price except the housing is cracked by the charging port. Is this something I should worry about?
Also, coming from an iphone, is the htc one x fairly intuitive? IMO, it's a better phone but my girlfriend is not as tech savvy as I am. Please let me know, thank you for your help.

Give her a few days and messing with it and she'll figure everything out. It's not like things are super complicated to find or do and there are plenty of "getting started with android" articles out there.
Got a picture of the cracked port? If it's between the port and the screen I wouldn't worry about it. If it's on the other side creeping towards the back of the device I would be a bit worried that a few more drops could propagate the crack.
I don't have a picture but I'm going to see it tonight in person. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

You have your answer for the crack, but the change from iPhone to HOX is very easy.
I actually came from an iPhone 4 before the HOX.
The only thing i think she'll miss is Siri, its a gimmick anyway and there's voice to text and voice control on this phone.
Best of luck to you guys with the transition.
PS: You could also get the housing replaced if it bothers her.

Make sure to turn it on to make sure it boots. Also you should boot it into the bootloader (reboot the phone and hold vol down until the bootloader shows up). At the top you'll see some words like LOCKED, TAMPERED, RELOCKED, etc etc. If you see TAMPERED that means the phone is rooted. UNLOCKED or RELOCKED means the bootloader has been unlocked or relocked.
If the person has a custom rom installed on it, I would ask him/her to RUU it back to stock before giving it to you. It'll be helpful to your girlfriend to have stock software so she can find the support she needs for it without coming here to the forums being confused about why hers has weird bugs and isn't running stock.
I bet some one took that bad boy apart. That's the only way I have seen that particular area get cracked, is from taking the phone apart

You should bring an active micro sim card with you to make sure it works, been reading a few stories about buying used phones and people finding out later that the imei got blacklisted.
Did anybody else glance at this thread and think someone was asking about a crack house? Lol

Thank for your replies everybody. I picked up the phone and I have to say, I'm using a galaxy s3 right now and the one x's screen is definitely sharper - I much prefer it. More importantly, my girlfriend loves the phone.
I ran into a bit of luck as the random I thought I was meeting up with turned out to be a friend of a friend. He seemed pretty honest about everything and the crack isn't really that bad at all. He gave me the receipt as well, puppy is on warranty till june 2013.
I never thought I'd be jealous of my girlfriends phone but I think I am a little.
