Firstly, let me thank all of you wonderful people, here on XDA, for all of your help with my many devices over the years!
But the time has come to move on. I'm afraid I have 'jumped ship' and got my self an iPhone 4!
I know, I know!
But I have to say, I love it! Is it as adaptable or individual as an HTC device? No! Is it more reliable and easy to use use? Yes! The plain fact is, it simply works. I have had it with hours / weeks / even months of fiddling, tweeking, crying and swearing over my HTC devices to get them to do what I want, or, in the caseof my HD2, simply get it to work!
It is refreshing to have a device which took just one hour to have just the way I wanted it. Nothing freezes or crashes, no resets (my HD2 required a soft reset with Memaid running every day or it was unusable), and customer service that is quick and very helpful (example, paid £40 for igo and couldn't get it to sync. Apple answered my email in 2 hours, I had an email conversation with an advisor over two days, trying various fixes which eventually worked. Then they emailed to tell me 'sorry for all the inconvenience' and 'as a valued member of the Apple family' (I know, yuck) they were refunding the £40 in full and hoped I would enjoy the app!
When did HTC ever respond like that?
I still have my HD2 (and my Touch HD) but they are being used by my wife and neice. The iPhone, much as I hate to say it, is just... better. It works, is quick and reliable. When I need it to work, it does and that is what, in the end, I need in my device.
I wish you all enjoyment in the use of your devices and health to use them!
Maybe, I'll be back some day...

Hey, guys, thanks for the replies. I thought people might be a bit more... negative. I appreciate the tone
You are all right, of course. Yes, it is more boring, in some ways a downgrade. I accept all that. However, there is no getting away from the face that it just works and has some amazing features (yes, I had a lot of them on my HD2, but they either took ages to work or didn't work right at all. I might sell my stuff eventually but my wife and neice are enjoying their 'new' phones ATM.
I am no fanboy and am quite progmatic about everything, I may well be back, or on android if / when things change, who can say?
Thanks again, and bye...

Mate, jeez why did you have to get a bloody iPhone? If you really hated your Leo so much, what you could've done is get an N1 or a Desire, and whacked MIUI on it. My mate bought a Desire, and had no dramas setting it up and using it.
If you need the apps from an iPhone, GET AN iPOD TOUCH! iPhone is just an overrated piece of ****e that does not do a lot more than a dumbphone, you are forced to use iTunes, it is locked down to the hilt, plus it loses reception when you touch the bottom left corner. Not to mention that you can't change the battery. (iPhone 4 is not the first phone capable of video calls, not to mention you can't do them over 3G)
I do see his point with WinMo being unstable (well it's an M$ product after all, and yeah I had a Leo too, but changed to a Desire due to WM being unstable, bugger all apps, unfriendly, buggy, and Android being the next big thing) but seriously, you should've changed to an Android phone. I talked most of my mates out of the iHype, and suggested a Galaxy S or a Desire instead of being Apple's slave. I like my freedom, mate!
Just my $0.02 ...

Mate, last year I would have agreed with you. Fact is I have had this phone for a fortnight now: no problems, no crashes, no resets. It is quick, responsive and does what it says on the tin!
Reception is fine, I've had no problems and don't use a 'bumper' or anything. As for itunes, I thought the same - then thought jailbreak. Fact is iTunes works just fine! Most of the apps I 'bought' were free or just 59p so I don't see the problem. I have never changed a battery in any phone I've owned... so don't anticipate a problem there. Android is great and, soon, it may be just what I want, but not now. Not yet. It just isn't quite there.
GPS on this thing is MUCH quicker, MUCH more accurate, MUCH more powerful (I get lock at home and work which I have never got close to before - HD2 couldn't even lock on OUTSIDE my work!) than anything I've used before.
Yes, there is an issue of being 'locked down' and I worried about this. However, when you use the phone and iTunes etc, there simply isn't an issue! If it works, and works well, what's the problem? I can't customise the phone but I'd rather have something that looks the same and works than something that looks different and either doesn't work or doesn't work as well or takes a lifetime to get it to work!
Don't get me wrong, if android comes of age by the end of my contract (12 Mnths) then I'll sell and come back to the fold. Untill then, I'm loving my iPhone and I don't care who knows it

You're quite right about the HD2's GPS lock, it was slower than that N95 I had, but the GPS in my Desire is top notch, only takes a few seconds, and accuracy at its best was about 3 metres (HD2 was 7m). I do know the iPhone 3G had **** GPS signal (took ages for TomTom and Navigon to get a lock on my mates phone). I haven't used the GPS on a 3GS or a 4 or a 3G equipped iPad though to be honest.
I just wanted to show my opinion of the iPhone, and by the way, I have owned an iPod Touch 2G (bloody well regret selling the damn thing. Might get a 4th Gen once the SHAtter jailbreak comes out) and I do like the UI, and as a tweaker, I still like the power to do that and that's why my trusty old iPT 2G was jailbroken. Apple are great at designing stylish hardware and good UIs (heck look at the LISA, and even the Mac back in 1984, the GUIs on those wiped the floor with anything else at the time), but what pisses me off with Apple is Job's arrogance, marketing hype, vendor lock-in, and a heavily restricted platform where you have to obey anything Apple tells you to do. But at least the iPhone doesn't have all that **** that the telco (carrier) shoves down your throat, like unwanted apps, wallpapers, branding or bootscreens.
Sorry if it seemed like I was a zealous anti-Apple fanboy who doesn't see past WinMo, Blackberry, Android, or Symbian. It's just the iPhone isn't my cup of tea, along with those stupid little fart apps, gun apps, virtual beverage apps, and web site "apps" (iPhone's not the only one to have them btw).
So... will we see you at http://iphone-developers.com/ ?

Never knew XDA was setting up an iPhone specific site. It'd probably cover iPod Touch, iPad and Apple TV 2G as well right?
Strange, I've had 2 Leos and both just work out of the box.

He's British, he doesn't have to worry about (third world) time zones (joke, please don't shoot me!!!!)
Have you got any info about how BT is stuffed? (Besides, if he doesn't want to use BT (I don't) then can't imagine no matter how bad it is he will be worried)
Yes apple devices restrict bluetooth in such a way that it can only communicate with apple devices (much the same as their video chat) and certain headsets ect. I am unsure if there is a jailbreak solution, But the fact that apple implimented this in the first place is enough to turn me away.
Dont forget this is in conjunction with their other connectivity and access issues (eg, no USB ports, no filesystem access no sd card functionality)
As I said above apple has led the way in restricting our devices. And since people have not taken issue with this, Microsoft, google and motorola are following, and they will as long as it is profitable to do so.
Not very nice of them, probably explains why none of the iphone people I see have BT devices. To be honest though, neither have I for my HD2 so this wouldn't cause me a problem at all.
Restricted or not should not be the question, the question should be "does the device do what you need?". In the OP's case, it sounds like it does so good luck to him.

did u ever had an android device in ur hands?^^
I am a microsoft certified shtooge.... They really hit a homerun with Windows7... but how can anyone take them seriously with a mobile os. They had over 10 years to kill that ****.. and they are weak. If Windows Phone 7 doesn't go well, you won't see Windows mobile until a computer and phone are the same.
how anyone could take microsoft seriously in the mobile arena is beyond me. I will be surprised and shocked if there new offering is actual stable and usable.
Seeing all OS's... I would say the android so far is winning.
Bluetooth actually works okay for me. My Samsung headset paired first time and works like a charm. I can even send stuff to other phones (non Apple) using an app and my phone isn't jailbroken yet.
It's just a matter of what is best for each of us at any one point in time. A few years ago WinMo was my choice. Now, it isn't.
Yes, I have used android and it is great. But there are still issues with reliability and crashing and also the iphone just 'felt' better to me, both physically and emotionally. I don't regret it and, as I said, I can change again in a year if / when things change. I am not (and never have been) a blinkered fan of any OS or any manufacturer. My phylosophy is, if it works and does what I need just now then I'll use it!
Yes, I will hop over to your iphone site (never knew it existed till now) but I'll hang around here from time to time too... maybe flash android to the HD2 and see how my wife gets on with it...
Hey guys, my dad is looking for a new phone. He currently has a 3 year old HTC Herald(A beaten up, broken touch screen, piece of ****) and seriously wants to have a replacement. He loves photography(Always tries to learn new things about his DSLR and improves his photography) so wants a phone that has a good camera. He wants a nice capacitive touch screen with e-mail(G-mail push) and facebook integration and GPS(With maps as well as map tracking) and perhaps some decent time-killer games. Nokia N8 costs about 22-24k INR here and sounds perfect for his needs, his other opinion was Dell Streak but it is about 34k INR plus its future of having gingerbread seems weak. Desire HD/Z are not available here plus they might be quite expensive when they make it here. I got a Desire and he doesn't want to have the same phone(Not that he found it to be bad, but he doesn't want to copy anyone. Plus camera on Desire is something he doesn't like(Not that I do)).
What do you think?
This is a matter of preference and I cant say much about the actual phone BUT after using android symbian just doesn't cut it anymore. But again this is only my opinion.
Agree with Daml...if you want to have also a GPS and maps, what is better than Android? I would stick with google OS instead of Symbian...
My GF has the N97 mini & was looking at N8 as hates the N97s Horrid UI, unfortunatly N8 is not a lot better.
Trying to move her to Android as far better OS than Nokia's bodged efforts at making Symbian touch friendly.
WM5 was better than OS on her N97 mini.
the n8 is a brick.
i played with thae phone. Symbian is wack in my opinion.
Well what would you guys suggest?
My wife has the N8. She likes it. It seems like a solid phone and hasn't given her any problems. Battery life is average, nowhere near her old phone, E71. She chose the N8 because of the ease of migration and the familiarity and she wanted a great camera. I forget where I read it, but the tagline was Nokia made a great camera with cell phone capabilities. It seems to be true. The Ovi Store and Ovi Maps are pretty good.
I can't directly compare with Android though. I prefer winmo and only boot to android for specific tasks or some game play.
Found migration using the Nokia transfer a long way from perfect.
The camera & build are only plus points, OS is simply a pathetic effort for aimed market & price.
Don't ask people on XDA about a Nokia device. You will only get troll and false answers. The only minus about the N8 is the application selection. Buy one to open the eyes of developers.
Seems like this post has been here for almost 2 weeks now so not sure if u have bought ur dad his phone yet.
However, i would disagree with the comments of people above me.
1) What is so bad about symbian^3? i agree that symbian1 sucked due to the inconsistent one and two touch to enter thing but symbian 3 has no such problems at all.
2) n8 offers alot more than just a 12Mp camera! It records in 720p HD, has active noice cancellation.
3) What other phones has a HDMI output? after taking pictures u can even just hook the phone up to a tv
4) I agree that there arent that many games yet, but it already has more than 10 HD games already so far and it's only been about 2 months. EA games are even backing the n8 symbian 3 by creating HD games for them!
hmm what else, i guess it does sell itself with the casing etc. I blive the top andriod atm is samsung galaxy s? The screen is nice indeed, but it has no flash and only 5mp camera, so night pictures are totally out of the picture. but yea try it before buying it! It's a really good phone i reckon, love the GPS on it too. oh and also not to mention the photo editing software that it comes with!

oh and btw, i migrated from my n86 to n8 without any problems. All my stuff got transfered over perfectly!
Yeh files migrated after afew attempts but sms dates are changed to date of the transfer which is a bit pathetic.
Had an issue with Thai font turning to squares after transfer, not good as both Nokia devices are Asian market & support Asian fonts so the transfer software appears to have an issue with this !
More customization of transfer options would be good too.
For price & Nokias long running in mobile market I would expect a lot more, the OS is about 3 years behind the compition ! My old WM2003se HTC Magician with Resco Photo Viewer makes an N97 mini photo viewer look completely pathetic, put it next to an iphone or WM6.5.3 OS & it looks like a 1st year students software project.
I'm not a nokia/symbian fan BUT, according with your dad's purposes, i think the N8 sounds exactly like the phone you're looking for.

If you are a Nexus One owner on T-Mobile, then you can install this hacked app and make Wi-Fi calls without any pertinent issues. However the installation instructions of this hack are still a bit of a task for novices, as it requires you to flash kernels and libraries before planting the APK file. "

I have both a premium android device (mytouch 4g with froyo) and N8. Although it comes down to individual preference, I prefer the android device. The UI is much more user friendly and smooth, theres actually a portrait qwerty keyboard available. The widgets are also much more customisable and easier to use. Additionally, the apps make the android device much more favourable. As a medical student, I find a plethora of medical apps available on Android (almost as many as the Iphone), and even otherwise there are a lot more apps available to make it feel like a true smartphone. It's also the little things that matter, such as the fact that the Android phone automatically syncs your contacts with facebook and twitter profiles of your friends, whereas the N8 does not appear to have this capability.
Admittedly the N8 feels like a lot more sturdy device (has gorilla glass and aluminised body), but I got it largely because of the availability of Ovi Maps (although I like Google Maps, I don't like the idea of needing a data connection everytime I go outside and need it). One other thing is that the N8 is a pentaband 3g device, meaning it would work on 3g networks in virtually every country and with every provider, although to my knowledge there is no such android device. This would be esp useful if you travel a lot (like me). This is something I personally think the people at Nokia should have actually bothered to mention when marketing the device. I mainly keep the N8 to listen to music, and for when I go overseas, but it is not my main device.
Overall, I'd definitely say go with the android device (esp. as the mytouch 4g is a great device).
it's up to you , but i think HTC is better!
Not in the camera department. If you want a camera phone look at samsung, nokia or sony's selection.

Who cares. switch if you want...or don't. If you aren't computer inclined to tinker with stuff and want something that sort of works for what the average person wants in a phone, then switch. However, most people won't admit it, but by the time they ask someone else for advice, they already made up their mind. They just want someone to agree with them that they are right. Only reason I would ever want a fruit based device is if I plan on porting something I develop for Android to it for testing. Would I use it outside of development? No way. However I don't care what platform it is when it comes to selling something (except the amazon app store, won't even put something on there).
well, if your an apple kiddie, why'd you drift away in the first place? you need to look deep into your soul and question your loyalty to apple.
that and seeing as how ios and android are completely different, it's like saying "should I get a girlfriend or a boyfriend?"

well the reason i got the htc thunderbolt was because of the 4g and how android was customizable but ive had the phone for 8 months now and the 4g drains the battery so much and ive never had an iphone my first phone was the motorola cliq so im not an apple kiddie
I just recently switched from carrier.
I was on T-Mobile and now am on Vodafone.
I now have HSDPA+ and that does indeed suck more battery then the HSDPA from T-mobile i had before.
Myself I can live with having my device with the data being turned off.
I'm not that hooked on being informed 24/7 about everything.
So that saves me more juice, so I can listen to more Music over Bluetooth.
I've never used an iPhone on a day to day basis so i really have no idea how that handles battery on a good 4G network.
But iPhone is over the hill and it now has good competition of great new and sexy devices.
Maybe Nokia makes a good come back with good battery time, but there's more out there then just the iPhone as an alternative.
Also there could always be something to tweak, from updating your phone's radio to a better suited version (not necessarily the newest).
Or Checking if there's applications getting stuck in sync or keeping your device from deep sleep to managing your syncing schedules.
Keep it clean guys, be Cool like me
Galaxy Nexus when it comes out, gonna be a hot phone.
well i rooted my phone and i dont like how my phone wont work with so much stuff, and i changed the radio to a battery conserving one and i see no difference and im also tired of sense and im waiting for a port of ics for the htc thunderbolt

Yeah, I think any connection upgrade for data on a phone does that from observation. It did when carriers were going from 2g to 3g as well. It'll get better over time as phones improve I am sure. One generally doesnt need 20-30+Mbps anyways to view a web page so toggling works okay for me.

For me, the biggest reason is that Android is an open infrastructure.
Instead of the choice of a single phone (choice of iPhones only because the generations overlap), I can choose from many. Instead of only apps vetted by a manufacturer at there own whims, there are multiple sources available. Not even a need for an app store. Apps I buy can be carried to other/different phones. The competition between manufacturers means more choices - if you want a hard keyboard, you can have that. Want HDMI out? Available. Want removable memory? Yep. Replaceable battery for extended time away from power? Got it. Ruggedized phone? It's out there.
Some people don't want to get involved with technological decisions - 1.5 GHz? Dual core?, etc. The iPhone is great for them - just buy the latest one.

Can you elaborate on "phone wont work with so much stuff", you have more access to what you can do when the phone is rooted. Are you meaning the vzw apps?
My suggestion, install CM7, if you still want a new phone after using that wait for the galaxy nexus.
Since verizon started carrying the iphone 4 back in feb, I just this past week sold 2 iphones for the first time.
Most people only want the phone because "my <insert person> has it". The fact that 4g is faster, battery is built in to iphone, you can not add more storage, you have to deal with apple primarily (closest store here is 1hr away), no adobe flash, etc.
Everyone (minus 2) I've sold a phone to since that phone launched goes for android, I allow them to make their educated decision based upon the facts, the two I sold were to apple fanboys who had to have Siri.

that's just how technology is. wether you get a car, computer, phone, etc.. new stuff is always around the corner.
with android as you mentioned, since it is open and different manufacturers are constantly releasing new phones it can be a bit overwhelming. whereas apple has their stuff on lockdown and since it's just them releasing things you don't see new stuff as often.
that doesn't mean however that whatever you have currently is crap just because something newer came out. for instance, even the Thunderbolt... its not the latest & greatest but it still holds up fine. and yes, the battery issue is with all 4G-LTE phones.
to sum thimgs up though;
Android = much more support(3rd party, development, etc), more customizable interface
iOS = incredibly simplistic, no 4G support period
I have an ipod touch that I connect in my car & use just for music. I hate itunes with a passion though and wish I could just copy/paste tracks instead of "sync". The only reason I use it instead of another mp3 device is because when it's connected to the stereo it gives better sound output then anything else... and when you spend $2,500 on your sound system, that matters big time. I could never see myself owning an iphone though.

Used to be able to do that until Apple locked out any chance of third party firmware development past the ipod video and 2g nano, so no more rockbox/ipod linux.
ok thats true i guess ill stay with my htc thunderbolt and just go out an buy a extended battery
just a side not,if you set the iphone to use the data aame as you set the thunderbolt guess what, your battery life sux just as bad,i get 6hours of heavy use, daughters iphone(she is a junkie like me)gets 6hours heavy use(oh boy)medium use goes to 10/12 hours so you see its not tgat different plus my screen is bigger
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
and furthermore, I'll have you know that I have the 2750mAh battery for the TB and with "heavy use" I go through that in about 4 - 5 hours.
before you say anything though, on my ipod touch, I can also blow through that battery in 4 - 5 hours aswell.
I guess it just depends on how 'intense' your usage is.
I was wondering what I should buy for my mom..
She doesn't fancy high tech and wants her phone to be simple. Still it should be able to run a GPS application and store offline maps onto her device?
Any recommendations? xp
i think....galaxy mini?for example?

Isn't the screen to little for a GPS application? I even doubt some do support it..
I was thinking of the LG Optimus L3 But I wouldn't know if it would be a good idea
Following this!
Load "xda post"
Press play on tape
Sony Xperia U. The Black one with the pink cap is a good, I think. If it wasn't too expensive here my mom would buy it

My mother in law is 76 years old and I got her a Droid 3 about three months ago. She loves it. It is way more phone than she needs or uses but it serves two very important roles. I setup a generic gmail account. My wife, mother in law, and I all use this account for our calendar. Since we all have access to it on our devices, we no longer have over-lapping appointments scheduled. She is also coordinating with a realtor to sell her house out of state. Instant access to her email has helped in this process as well. I also rooted the device so that I could under volt it so that she gets much better battery life. She is not a power user so under clocking helped as well.
Hope this helps.

You can download maps for offline use.
I second mike21pr, on a Nokia Lumia. The interface is really simple and intuitive and the phone will also have access to a free GPS app (Nokia Drive), which you are looking for.

An iPhone.. something she cant break :silly:
i donno anything about its ability to store offline maps, but i would choose a windows phone over an android device. the latter just offers too much functionality and may be too complex for your mum, whereas the usability and design of the former is simple, intuitive and minimalistic. however, a windows phone device could still have all the functionality your mum needs.
I'd have to agree with the Nokia, the maps are ok, the phone is easy to use and it's difficult to break. Not impossible, but pretty difficult.
samsung
The samsung exhibit 2 has been nice for me and my wife. It's really affordable for the specs, and you can put a 32GB card in it set it up with swapsd and load Navfree USA with all of the maps for the US. The maps aren't as good as google, but it works offline.
I got my mum a Samsung galaxy ace simple and easy to use she loves it the speks are low but budget phones are

You should give her one of these cheap windows phones, like the Nokia Lumia 610. It seems to me that windows phones are much more easy to use than android, at least for older people.
Not everyone needs custom JB on lg gt540, like I have
HTC Sense
In my opinion, an HTC device is the best solution for a newbie in smartphone. HTC Sense is quite simple and beautiful, my girlfriend has a Sensation and she is really happy of it.
A good nokia.
I may suggest Samsung Galaxy Notes - wide screen, so she will be able to easily read emails and books.
Good luck!
I know this question may be seem insane for lot of people out there. But please be kind enough to answer me with patient. (typical research)
I am a Linux developer. I am used to develop on desktop environment and find my self confident with portability of laptop. For all of these years I used a simple mobile phone just to make calls and texts. I don't ever do browse web or take photos from my mobile. I have digital cameras and camcorders for that. Most technical thing I used with my phone is using it as a presentation remote controller over blue-tooth. That's all.
Recently my phone broke down due to my careless nature. So it's time for me to buy a mobile. I thought of going for a android (smart phone). Could you guys point me out why should I get a smart phone? Would it be waste of money? I don't need to read books, surf web, take photos or play games on mobile. I see gps as a useful thing but not using that much either. I see a camera on smart-phone is a waste. I like to use it as a QR reader too. Also if I buy it I would make apps for it as I know how to develop android apps. But I don't need to buy it for app making.
So please stop laughing at me and tell me why should I shift. I'm bit old fashion guy. Thank you
P.S. :- Thank you guys so much for the support. I made my decision. You guys helped me to make it. I'm buing android in next week. Again thanks alot.

These days, many people have a Smartphone as well as a normal calling+texting phone. Its simply because Smartphones don't have much battery backup and the normal phones can last for 3-4 days. And for calling and texting they uses this normal phone and for internet related things, Smartphones! But its just for heavy phone user.
In your case, if you don't use internet related apps or web browsing you can pretty much opt for a normal phone as it comes cheap and can save battery. Android or any other Smartphone is only useful for those who uses Social Networking or Instant Messaging, etc. And if you feel like you want to shift to Android after purchasing a normal phone, its do-able because normal phones like Nokia 109, Nokia 114 etc. costs much less.
definitely smartphones
As of these days smartphone pricing is going down day by day, and its better to hav one if you develop apps. One point we dont know when an emergency mail has to be sent or receive only by your smartphone 3g .
You don't need one its that simple
So many Roms so little time
It's up to you.
Personally, I've found plenty of times it's much easier to do something internet-related on my phone rather than get out or bring my big, heavy laptop. I used to do that. Get lost, need directions, et cetera ? That meant pulling over to somewhere with free WIFI. Having a smartphone means you just need to pull over anywhere - or use voice commands/have a passenger do it/just be unsafe/et cetera.
I used to have a point-and-shoot camera and the only time I've used it since getting my new phone with a decent camera is to take a picture of the phone itself. Why carry around a bunch of stuff when one small object can do it all ?
With my smartphone I hardly ever text any more since I can use data IM services. Not really essential, but it gives you options. I also find typing on the touchscreen to be faster and easier thanks to Swiftkey 3. I had phones with a physical keyboard before and I don't miss it.
If you are getting a carrier upgrade or considering buying through eBay or the like, I think a good question is "why not" ? You can get a good enough smartphone for pretty cheap and get a feel for it.
One thing I love is things like Astrid tasks - I can have it instead of a grocery list, et cetera - I won't lose it because my phone is something I always check to have with me instead of a piece of paper. I can carry it while getting groceries unlike a whole laptop or even computer. It's also incredibly easy to take notes at times when getting a whole laptop out would be ridiculous. You can make notes of things to remember and add calendar events that sync to your desktop/laptop. I have my phone syncing to three other devices so that just like not having to carry an extra camera, I don't have to manually transfer everything on physical media.
Sure, I don't NEED to play mobile games, but... why not ? Even my mom likes Android gaming. My phone plan is LESS than my talk + text plan was with Sprint, it's not like I'm paying extra for this. I keep a book or two on my phone because why not, it comes in handy when needed and it doesn't cost me anything. I watched a bit of a show on Netflix while waiting for a friend - so much faster and easier than setting up a whole laptop in my car and trying to get a WIFI signal strong enough. I'm so pleased that I'm paying less money and getting so much more - my last phone couldn't even go on-line, let alone stream HD video over 4g.
I like being able to search for answers to "when is Sears open until" or "nearest liquor store" or "I haven't seen a road I recognise for ten miles" - and be able to get directions. Yeah, it's silly, but it's pretty great. I had to drive once to a friend's parents' house - somewhere I'd never been. Instead of getting arduous turn-by-turn directions, I could just get the street address and Google Maps lead me there without needing to keep my friend on the phone while driving. My friends and I routinely use the navigation since even if you know where point B is, you might not immediately know the best way to get there from point A - saves gas and time.
I would disagree that you don't need it for app making. Not technically, no - but how can you really be a good app-maker if you don't understand the user and what the user wants ? You can read about it, sure - but you're not going to have the best tools to be creative and innovate unless you have it in your hands and understand the unique challenges and logistics that come with actually using a smartphone. It's like if doctors only read books and never interacted with sick people under instruction before being "on the job" for real. You learn so much by having hands-on experience that might be easy to overlook or not consider otherwise.
My dad had a flip-phone until recently. He asked the same question, "why" ? Now he wonders why he ever said "no". Yeah, he has a laptop required for work and a lot of other things, but it's just the little things that it adds - the options, getting rid of extra gadgets, making life a little bit easier when you'd have been paying for the phone service anyway - why not ?
Could I get by without it ? Definitely. But why would I give it up when it's actually saving me money ?
Thank you guys! I think I found my answer.

:good: Thank you so much for the time you took for giving me a reply. I don't want to earn from making apps. I'm a free and open source developer and my profession is linux (for now ). Using map is one of my conserns. I don't like playing games on mobile as due to tiny screen. Even playing angry birds on mobile is less effective than using a large monitor. So I'm not conserned about it.
About shopping list. Well I have a similar idea to develop a free app for keep tracking things you do.
Again thank you very much. Your very explaintory answer have opned new use cases for me. God sake you are a good technical writer. May I ask you, are you a QA or Analysist? Because you know how to reply and give use cases.
Thank you guys. I guess I found the answer. But one more small problem. is buying android 2.3 device Alcatel OT-903 will be enough? It's a low price phone and if it didn't worth it I wouldn't be too much worrying.

Honestly I wouldn't buy any phone with 2.3 and down them were the worst of android days when they were working out the kinks ICS and up is awesome but if you plan on putting a custom ROM on it it won't matter as you can get the latest version just make sure the phone has good devoloment. I agree with Pennycake. One other thing that I would like to add is that with the convenience of having a smartphone you will find yourself using the features a lot more then you anticipate now.
I do not understand what do you mean "normal phone"?; since Android is already a standard of a phone.

Android has much more advantages of apps and stuff and mobility.. you'll never know until you buy..
But then again, Firefox Os and Ubuntu Os are coming up..

Well let's put it this way I have a 3yr old phone a Samsung fascinate the first galaxy's phone to come to verizen its over 3yrs has a single core hummingbird proccesor. You would think this phone sucks right? Nope you know 4.2.2 only came out like 3 days ago we already have it lol and our phone beats most dual cores its amazing what good devoloment and we have over 10 ROMs just for 4.x any its do easy to work no locked anything now if you want a phone like that go with a nexus or Samsung Device There the only people who makes phones completely open no locked boot loader all it takes is a click to root and hundreds of ROMs so just asking as you get a nexus or Samsung device I think you will be happy.
If I helped hit the thanks

This is so true since Apple is just keep making technology expensive and exclusive and dividing social classes while Android is always trying to make good technology for everyone. Just look at those Chinese companies like ZTE and Huawei, few years before, their phones are just CRAP and now as they all use Android OS, their phone just got a new life.
I would go with android phone. In my opinion it is better than the other operation systems and the phones that are using it are the best at the moment.
