Firstly, let me thank all of you wonderful people, here on XDA, for all of your help with my many devices over the years!
But the time has come to move on. I'm afraid I have 'jumped ship' and got my self an iPhone 4!
I know, I know!
But I have to say, I love it! Is it as adaptable or individual as an HTC device? No! Is it more reliable and easy to use use? Yes! The plain fact is, it simply works. I have had it with hours / weeks / even months of fiddling, tweeking, crying and swearing over my HTC devices to get them to do what I want, or, in the caseof my HD2, simply get it to work!
It is refreshing to have a device which took just one hour to have just the way I wanted it. Nothing freezes or crashes, no resets (my HD2 required a soft reset with Memaid running every day or it was unusable), and customer service that is quick and very helpful (example, paid £40 for igo and couldn't get it to sync. Apple answered my email in 2 hours, I had an email conversation with an advisor over two days, trying various fixes which eventually worked. Then they emailed to tell me 'sorry for all the inconvenience' and 'as a valued member of the Apple family' (I know, yuck) they were refunding the £40 in full and hoped I would enjoy the app!
When did HTC ever respond like that?
I still have my HD2 (and my Touch HD) but they are being used by my wife and neice. The iPhone, much as I hate to say it, is just... better. It works, is quick and reliable. When I need it to work, it does and that is what, in the end, I need in my device.
I wish you all enjoyment in the use of your devices and health to use them!

he clearly just want a more intelligent feature phone. i myself have toyed with the idea but i always want to be able to mess around with stuff

You are all right, of course. Yes, it is more boring, in some ways a downgrade. I accept all that. However, there is no getting away from the face that it just works and has some amazing features (yes, I had a lot of them on my HD2, but they either took ages to work or didn't work right at all. I might sell my stuff eventually but my wife and neice are enjoying their 'new' phones ATM.
I am no fanboy and am quite progmatic about everything, I may well be back, or on android if / when things change, who can say?

Mate, jeez why did you have to get a bloody iPhone? If you really hated your Leo so much, what you could've done is get an N1 or a Desire, and whacked MIUI on it. My mate bought a Desire, and had no dramas setting it up and using it.
If you need the apps from an iPhone, GET AN iPOD TOUCH! iPhone is just an overrated piece of ****e that does not do a lot more than a dumbphone, you are forced to use iTunes, it is locked down to the hilt, plus it loses reception when you touch the bottom left corner. Not to mention that you can't change the battery. (iPhone 4 is not the first phone capable of video calls, not to mention you can't do them over 3G)
I do see his point with WinMo being unstable (well it's an M$ product after all, and yeah I had a Leo too, but changed to a Desire due to WM being unstable, bugger all apps, unfriendly, buggy, and Android being the next big thing) but seriously, you should've changed to an Android phone. I talked most of my mates out of the iHype, and suggested a Galaxy S or a Desire instead of being Apple's slave. I like my freedom, mate!

Mate, last year I would have agreed with you. Fact is I have had this phone for a fortnight now: no problems, no crashes, no resets. It is quick, responsive and does what it says on the tin!
Reception is fine, I've had no problems and don't use a 'bumper' or anything. As for itunes, I thought the same - then thought jailbreak. Fact is iTunes works just fine! Most of the apps I 'bought' were free or just 59p so I don't see the problem. I have never changed a battery in any phone I've owned... so don't anticipate a problem there. Android is great and, soon, it may be just what I want, but not now. Not yet. It just isn't quite there.

You're quite right about the HD2's GPS lock, it was slower than that N95 I had, but the GPS in my Desire is top notch, only takes a few seconds, and accuracy at its best was about 3 metres (HD2 was 7m). I do know the iPhone 3G had **** GPS signal (took ages for TomTom and Navigon to get a lock on my mates phone). I haven't used the GPS on a 3GS or a 4 or a 3G equipped iPad though to be honest.
I just wanted to show my opinion of the iPhone, and by the way, I have owned an iPod Touch 2G (bloody well regret selling the damn thing. Might get a 4th Gen once the SHAtter jailbreak comes out) and I do like the UI, and as a tweaker, I still like the power to do that and that's why my trusty old iPT 2G was jailbroken. Apple are great at designing stylish hardware and good UIs (heck look at the LISA, and even the Mac back in 1984, the GUIs on those wiped the floor with anything else at the time), but what pisses me off with Apple is Job's arrogance, marketing hype, vendor lock-in, and a heavily restricted platform where you have to obey anything Apple tells you to do. But at least the iPhone doesn't have all that **** that the telco (carrier) shoves down your throat, like unwanted apps, wallpapers, branding or bootscreens.
Sorry if it seemed like I was a zealous anti-Apple fanboy who doesn't see past WinMo, Blackberry, Android, or Symbian. It's just the iPhone isn't my cup of tea, along with those stupid little fart apps, gun apps, virtual beverage apps, and web site "apps" (iPhone's not the only one to have them btw).

Strange, I've had 2 Leos and both just work out of the box.

It dosent "just work" Bluetooth is stuffed, And if your Aussie the apparently iphones UI screwed up with daylight savings. Im not a fanboy eather. I just dont want to support a company that is leading the way in controlling your phone. Im annoyed at android and win phone 7 for folowing that path as well.

Have you got any info about how BT is stuffed? (Besides, if he doesn't want to use BT (I don't) then can't imagine no matter how bad it is he will be worried)
Yes apple devices restrict bluetooth in such a way that it can only communicate with apple devices (much the same as their video chat) and certain headsets ect. I am unsure if there is a jailbreak solution, But the fact that apple implimented this in the first place is enough to turn me away.
Dont forget this is in conjunction with their other connectivity and access issues (eg, no USB ports, no filesystem access no sd card functionality)
As I said above apple has led the way in restricting our devices. And since people have not taken issue with this, Microsoft, google and motorola are following, and they will as long as it is profitable to do so.
Not very nice of them, probably explains why none of the iphone people I see have BT devices. To be honest though, neither have I for my HD2 so this wouldn't cause me a problem at all.
Restricted or not should not be the question, the question should be "does the device do what you need?". In the OP's case, it sounds like it does so good luck to him.

I am a microsoft certified shtooge.... They really hit a homerun with Windows7... but how can anyone take them seriously with a mobile os. They had over 10 years to kill that ****.. and they are weak. If Windows Phone 7 doesn't go well, you won't see Windows mobile until a computer and phone are the same.
how anyone could take microsoft seriously in the mobile arena is beyond me. I will be surprised and shocked if there new offering is actual stable and usable.
Seeing all OS's... I would say the android so far is winning.
Bluetooth actually works okay for me. My Samsung headset paired first time and works like a charm. I can even send stuff to other phones (non Apple) using an app and my phone isn't jailbroken yet.
It's just a matter of what is best for each of us at any one point in time. A few years ago WinMo was my choice. Now, it isn't.
Yes, I have used android and it is great. But there are still issues with reliability and crashing and also the iphone just 'felt' better to me, both physically and emotionally. I don't regret it and, as I said, I can change again in a year if / when things change. I am not (and never have been) a blinkered fan of any OS or any manufacturer. My phylosophy is, if it works and does what I need just now then I'll use it!
Yes, I will hop over to your iphone site (never knew it existed till now) but I'll hang around here from time to time too... maybe flash android to the HD2 and see how my wife gets on with it...

After looking at the presentation of IPhone 3G v3.0 and already have read the articles about the WM v6.5 and v7.0, a huge disappointment came over me.
You see I am a top shouter in my environment for the HTC phones which are all equipped with the WM OS's.
The greatest impression on me where some articles about guys(who seemed in my eyes a real priority on this, i am dutch so not quickly impressed by anything), who wrote all similar story's about the WM v6.5/7.0. Stating Microsoft is not at all doing anything to compete with the Google and APPLE OS's. There are just very few improvements and absolutely not at all impressive enough as the IPhone OS.
Reading some article they are looking for a lead developer for the new core for WM v7.0 are not honored and contradicting, like saying oke guys i know the current OS is ****ty so we need to start over, can anyone help us?
That is not the sort of message I as WM lover like to hear.
It seems that Apple is just about the only one who is really listening to the users and they are working their ass off getting all requested functionality integrated. APPLE have done more on the OS in 1 year then Microsoft did on all development of the WM versions.
I am working at an IT company where the IPhone is making a serious entry and I am working at support and people asking me for information getting the IPhone working with the company applications. and guess what, it is sooooooo much easier getting it setup then every other WM-device i have seen. And they seem to shrink in number at the company.
Now I am really in love with the HTC-devices, but i am slowly getting confused by the latest IPHONE OS.
I expect that Microsoft will loose this battle due to their arrogance and dragging all major mobile company's down with it. So expect another crisis in a year or 3 because now the smart phones are booming but people will come to their senses and they switch to IPhone after their subscriber to the providers has ended.
So please bring me to my senses and say I am totally wrong!!

They where skating years and years on the normal skates and the fastest times stayed longer and longer on the list.
Then someone decided to change the skate(klikskate, the iron comes half lose when lifting the skate) so significantly everybody said out loud that will not work, so they tried it a bit but went back to their old skates(sneakers).
Until someone who always was just under the top 10 decided, oke I reeeeeeealy going to try this and trained for 2 years on it.
So the next major tournament this person broke all long standing records.
Now everybody is using the new ice skates and up until now, records keep broken almost every new major tournament.
Shortly: I half agree with the sneaker story but it will not hold on the long term.
Microsoft just messed up to big, so if Bill wants to see another billion or 2 added on the Forbes list he has to get serious on this.
Windows Mobile 7 is not even beta yet so how can you be making comparisons with that OS? And while apple has added features to bring it on par with modern smartphones I personally am too used to the freedom of using a device of my own choosing with whatever carrier I choose and not being tied to using apple software and hardware products.

How about the g1? It listens to its users the users and devs nake this phone better everydaay. I have had my for just over a week and don't know how I livd without it. I love how it works It can do all the iphone can and more. My main thing is it needs flash player other than that. also anyone seen or have any ideas on the new plam?

I've only had 2 WM devices so far, the XDA Exec and now the Touch Dual.
As much as I've enjoyed playing with these, I'm starting to really like the look of the iPhone. Everyone I speak to that has one say they love it because it does what is says on the lid. It works.
I'm fed up with having to reset my phone when it crashes on an incoming call, or re-syncing it to my BT car Hands free set...............
I've had to work hard and rely on the good devs here (thanks folks)to be able to get to a point where my phone is just about stable.
The iPhone is starting to look like a possability when my contract is up in six months
WM 6.5 will make it better as well as ROM Cookers. I have the Iphone 3G - in the box. Yes its flashy and its more fluid I like the control I have over my Touch HD. I like being able to flash it and try it out. I like the fact that I can change the BATTERY out on it. I like the ability to sync with Outlook, I like the fact that there are many many apps for the WM 6.1 and 6.5(when it becomes available).
And I like my screen resolution and Garmin XT NAV
Oh yeah.. Did I mention that I hate ITUNES and DRM?

you do realize that you can turn off syncing, which means that you wont send any data to the google acct. so none of your contacts/appointments will leave your phone, and gmail wont sync. if you root your G1 you dont even have to use a google acct.

Still No Multitasking

I don't think the iPhone is able to beat anybody yet, as you can see, the above upgrade or fix to the coming iPhone 3 are qualities that should have been there since it's first release. They are still playing catch-up to Windows Mobile.
The only thing I like about the iPhone is the speed. Other than that, nothing else. With more powerful processor coming out, this will definitely be a brighter future for WM.

Sorry to see you are having trouble, but for me, my setup is very stable. No crashes nor freezes, so I am happy with Windows Mobile. BT works flawlessly too. I believe stability is related to what applications you have installed. I have about 350 applications and games installed, you just need to try them one by one and see which one causes the problem. This is the proceedure I do each time I upgrade my device. By the way, I have an HTC Advantage X7510. I just use my HTC Universal as the test subject nowadays.
I'd like to thank those brave enough to say that the iPhone does in fact pose a huge problem to WM, and those brave enough to say that they're willing to move away. Another thing I'd like to say is that being tied to a carrier/network that you don't like is not actually an argument against the iPhone, rather the circumstances surrounding it. Let's keep this thread based around an SIM-unlocked iPhone for a change. Also, let's just look at the OS, and not the extras HTC/Samsung/SE has overlayed on top.
Now, let's face it, WM is losing appeal- fast. WM is dynamic and flexible- almost like an open-source OS, but the UI is outdated and still bears an uncanny resemblance to it's oldest predecessor almost 10 whole years ago. Also, it can get laggy, and crashes even on stock ROMs, so there's another bunch of disadvantages.
Not much left. Let's hope WM7 saves MS.

This is what I'm feeling so far.......... (my two cents)
I love my wimo (6700, 8525, tilt and now touch Pro) and at first I use to tell people that only way that iPhone is making a killing is because how they advertised the phone.
People with iPhones use to be like your phone looks and feels like a brick. I will tell them how the wimo can do all types of things, so they started coming back to me and showing how once they jail break the phone they can do about all most the same thing. I would laugh and say well you still can't get mms, teathering, or cut/paste......3.0 is coming out for the iPhone, now I feel like hiding from the ones I laughed at.
If Microsoft is reading......please help us out, because the reason I love the phones is because they can do wonders but now I'm starting to feel like an old school guy with and old phone not willing to give up.............We (I hope I can speak for all the wimo people) spend at alot of time and money on these phone and just want a little something back, beside a new phone......think about the inside the phone and help us out so we can stay and be the top dogs again.

The Weather Channel, CNBC, eBay, NBA, MLB, ESPN, Showtime plus thousands of other companies choose to make apps for the iphone only. Aside from the few cool games the iPhone has, it doesn't offer anything extraordinary.

Mmm, gotta disagree with you on that. Are you speaking from experience? Do you own an iPhone? I agree with the OP, I've been frustrated by the useful apps that have come out for the iPhone while WM has been all but forgotten.

You could switch to a nice android device. I really like my g1 quite a bit. The app store doesn't have the volume of apps that the iphone one does, but if you factor out all the sound boards and fart machines, there isn't a huge difference.
Also, android is a platform, not a single device. I'm betting long term, you will see android win market share. It wouldn't be the first time that apple lost out with a closed, proprietary system. They did the same thing when competeing with IBM and Microsoft, and lost out there too.
I hate the Iphone, not because I'm jealous.
Its just, well, a ****ty phone all around.

Also, then think about how much money you will spend with your iphone for mainly crappy apps that people make just to make money... and remember that the only way to customize it is to hack it, and risk breaking it... and even still it isnt very customizable.

Android is gaining a number of apps in the Android Market. Some of the apps mentioned by the OP are now available on Android and more a coming online all the time.

took a while to get into the scene / getting around the more restricted OS, but i'm glad i did. looking forwards to running android on my kaiser, but i'll probably never go back to winmo (unless 7 is worth it).

Gotta say, there's still a place in my heart for WinMo, and I'm really looking forward to WM7, hoping not to be disappointed. But once you jailbreak an iPhone, it's superior in basically every way. I'm sick to death of Job's draconian resistance to JB, but fortunately the community has some geniuses who can tell him where he needs to go stick his head.
Valkryomnia may hate it, but that's only because he clearly doesn't have a jailbroken iPhone, because all the things he's talking about are laughably false except for the non-removable battery and memory. However, those aren't big deals for me because at this point the choice is 32GB of non-removable memory on iPhone vs 16GB of removable on WM. Not a hard choice for me. And as for the battery, I probably will get a new phone by the time it dies anyway, so... meh.
It's funny, but at this point the thing I miss most about WM is having to fiddle around with it to get it to work. With a JB iPhone I really don't have to, not because you can't customize it (you pretty much fully can), but because it really just works. And giving up the fun of fiddling with it is a small price to pay for also giving up the frustration of the constant crashes, memory problems, incompatibilities, abandoned software that has promise but never gets finished, flashing, reflashing, and flashing, flashing, flashing constantly, etc. It's just a world of difference.
I jumped from the n-gage into the WM world and its disappointing at best in the games deppartment.
Emus and ports are good, but the iphone games are looking better each day.
Plus, 3 years ago when the iphone came out, M$ made a lot of promisses that WM could be as good as and i havent seen any yet.
I still remenber a youtube video showing the (soon to come out) Windows Vista gadgets running on the WM... where are they?
I love WM and sometimes i miss a FUN Application and Games that iPhone have but at all i can say that the iPhone is made for the Kids for peoples betwen 14 and 18 years Because the WM is more for Bussines Peoples etc.
So our HTC Phones are more Stylish for Example i use Blackstone.. we can`t even compare iPhone Vs Blackstone.
So if someday HTC start to support the device better and make new apps often some for bussines some just for fun... you know what will heppand.
I only don`t know one thing.
If i was a owner of HTC and i want to Grown Alot alot more... the 1st thing that i will do is More Support with ROM`s with Apps i can tell you with sure that if WM have the same FUN apps like iPhone and even better NO ONE WILL BUY an iPhone!!!
And i wonder why HTC don`t kick this iPhones from the Market they can do it very easy.
Even that we dont have alot WM apps made by HTC or other i still prefer to have a stylish bussines device that have many futures and potential in the future

I've been a windows mobile user for a couple of years and while I love tweaking everything and writing apps in c#, I'm quickly growing tired of it falling so far behind the iphone and android. 6.5 is really just a new start menu and lock screen with WM2003 underneath. Back when I had a tytn I loved flashing new roms, but recently I've lot interest in it, especially when the benefits aren't really that great in terms of features.
My contract is up in January and at the moment I'm leaning towards an iphone. I like the look of android (plus I would be able to write apps for it in java), but it doesn't feel that complete to me.
My main uses for a phone are:
Web browsing - nothing beats the iphone here. Opera is nice but its painfully slow. Opera mini is also very good but the rendering doesn't look that nice.
Facebook - the iphone app is by far the best, and the windows mobile one is a joke.
Twitter - there are decent clients for all 3
Email (not push) - Pocket outlook isn't finger friendly, so its iphone or android here, but I haven't seen the android email client that much.
Writing apps - I'm happy to write java or C#, and hate objective C
Random apps - The iphone is a clear winner here
Golf scorecards with GPS - I wrote one for windows mobile, but nothing I can write could compare to apps like airvue for the iphone
Satnav - I love igo, so windows mobile wins here
Music - Once more, the iphone blows everything else away (S2P is nice, but still laggy on my diamond).
I think that if the HD2 was android then it would be a serious contender, but unless anything amazing comes out within the next 3 months I'll be jumping ship to the iphone (and probably jailbreaking it straight away).
Going back a year, I was one of the 'iphone haters', and I still hate the mac fanboy mentality of apple is best whilst blocking out all forms of logic and reason. Now I just want something which does everything I need easily and quickly.

I'm not an apple fanboy, I have an ipod touch but have never owned an iphone because I like to customise my phones too much & I know you can't really do that with an iphone. Having said that, I think it's so stupid how some people pretend that the iphone isn't a good phone just because they have some sort of issue with apple or the number of people that use their products. Say what you want about the closed OS or whatever, but I don't see how you can deny that the iphone completely changed the cell phone business and for the average user there are few phones that are as easy to use and have as an asthetically pleasing interface as the iphone.
I do love the HTC design and style, but why is it always bad on hardware?
The ram and speed upgrades are always small and the video drivers are sad at best.
Its true, the WM ppcs were made for business, and never had a real "gamer liberation"... that, for me, is the problem with them.
I wanted a cheap ppc that could be, like the magician (qtek s100/s110), way ahead of its time.

Yes.. befor more than a year when i was looking for a new Device just to say that here in Bulgaria we don`t have so good contracts etc so when you want a new Device you just need to Buy it by yourself Cash.
So from the time i start to use Mobile Phones i always own a Nokia and i always use the latest models befor to move in WM i was on Symbian and i use the Nokia almost everyone from N series.. but befor a year i was thinking i need something new something diferent and powerfull...
and the Blakcstone just come out on the market this days and he amazed me with the Screen with thedesign and with many other things...

oh really? Please explain. No you cant, that is completely false. Show me an alternate UI? So me multi tasking? Show me anything other than the possibility of changing an icon lol. The iphone is an app launcher, plain and simple. You simply cant customize it, you can just put different apps on it.

Let me preface my argument with an introduction: Why did I buy an iPhone to begin with? Short answer: It was a reaction to Windows Phone 7.
Long answer: As a big fan of Windows Mobile, I was pretty much devastated to hear all the news about WP7 a while back, in particular the fact that it has no backwards compatibility. Much of XDA didn't seem to share my pessimism, but me? I was extremely upset. At the time, I had wanted to purchase an HD2 after using the Fuze for so long, but I did not want to upgrade to WP7. That would have been fine, but then many companies began to drop support for WM6.X left and right in favor of developing for WP7 (including a few I really wish hadn't). I was also afraid that, by sticking to WM6.5, I was going to get left behind with an abandoned OS, so I came to a conclusion: If I had to switch to an entirely new OS (which was what I considered WP7), then I might as well switch to an already established one.
A lot of choices (WebOS, Maemo, Android, and, of course, iPhone) popped into my head, but what ultimately made me head to the iPhone was my absolutely certainty in one thing: That without apps, even the most powerful and beautiful smartphone would be useless. Alternatively, with apps, even a poor smartphone becomes great. The second part of this belief is the reason why I had used Windows Mobile for so long and it is also a principle I apply greatly to the iPhone.
By coincidence, about the time I came to a decision, my contract was up, and I was allowed to upgrade. I chose the iPhone 3GS. Now, about a little over one month after I purchased it, I am glad to say that my 'absolute certainty' turned out to be proven correct (at least to me). The iPhone, in time and with the right apps, has now become far more important to me than my Windows Mobile phone has ever been.
Admittedly, at first, I was nervous that I made an error. The first two weeks after owning an iPhone was a terror; everything was so damn restrictive. The simplest things that WinMo would let me do easily (such as renaming my files) was forbidden on the iPhone; to do anything like it, I had to use iTunes (which I hated), and even that came with restrictions. However, over time and with the help of the massive iPhone app store, I began to overcome each problem. Even better, each solution the iPhone presented ended up being far, far superior to what I used on WinMo.
I liked using Twitter on WinMo? Twitterrific is not only faster than any Twitter app I've ever used on WinMo, but it comes with more features and has much better usability. I liked using Tomtom on WinMo? MapQuest/CoPilot Live offered free voice navigation (they are the *only* free navigation software I have ever accepted as reasonable substitutes for the paid GPS solutions) and, of course, Tomtom plus numerous others are also available any time I want them. I liked reading using Adobe Reader LE on WinMo? 'Stanza' on the iPhone has so many more features with such a better interface that it's almost difficult to put into words.
And things continued in such a manner. As I had thought prior to buying it, the iPhone was able to replace every app I ever used on Windows Mobile with an equal or superior version. To make things all the better, the iPhone is just a crazy amount faster than any other smartphone I've ever used before.
Enough of the compliments, though. Truthfully, there is still a few things that my Fuze could do that my iPhone can't. Some examples? Well, my Fuze can get a pretty decent alarm clock app. Additionally, it can also tether pretty well. Unfortunately (for my Fuze, that is), the former issue will be gone upon iPhone OS 4's release, and the latter will no longer be an issue once I jailbreak my iPhone. If nothing else, if there is any issue that I can claim about the iPhone that is simply not possible to get around, it is the dependence upon iTunes.
In a way, I feel almost foolish. I had spent a good amount of time despising the iPhone because it lacked the hardware features that so many other Android/WinMo/Symbian smartphones seem to be get. While a WinMo phone was announced with a massive, WVGA screen with a 5MP camera; an iPhone was announced with the ability to copy and paste. Meh, I guess I can be happy that I'm wrong.
To get to the point and summarized my entire argument: the iPhone comes with a lot of restrictions compared to what I'm normally used to with Windows Mobile, but it more than made up for it with it's amazing app selection, the incredible speed of its OS, and it's admittedly elegant (I somehow hate this word with Apple products) design.
I had kept my Fuze as a backup in case things did not work out, but now, I find it unimaginable for me to go back to what I used before.

I personaly had to work with an Iphone recently(well I had to help some overextended users), some of them had WinMo phones before. And I still found alot of good stuff from WinMo missing. Some features I never tought could miss on a recent phone...
Well for me the IPhone feels like a toy, my Touch Pro2 feels like a Phone/PDA. There's nothing wrong with toys, just another user group.
I lost the game but had to find it again with a hero when the slippery bugger flew out my top pocket on to the kitchen floor.

I can understand the freshness iPhone brings about to its new users, as I experienced using the phone for more than half of a year. For the first few months it felt really great, everything was just more than perfect, and I did not even think about using any phone other than iPhone.
But after six months, I changed my mind. My iPhone 3G was so boring, there is nothing left of the phone that could hold me back. And I decided to get a new HD2. Only after that, I asked myself a question "Why was I stuck with the boring iPhone for that long?"
Anyways, your needs and demand will decide which phone is the best for you.

Thats what I thought when I bot the iphone 2G a few years back, I actually used it for close to a year before getting the HTC Tough Diamond. It was ok for 3 months before I got the SE Xperia X1. That was ok too until it broke down on me. After that I tried the Nokia E71 (which I tot was a brilliant phone btw). Used that for another 6 months before I got the iphone 3GS. But surprisingly the 3GS did nothing for me. I tot it was kinda boring as I did not see that much difference with the 2G (in terms of UI).
Now, I have an Android Supercharged Nexus one. And in all honesty, this is the best phone I have ever owned. The Brilliant UI, the Speed of this phone, the screen, the openess of the OS is really revolutionary if you ask me. I can safely say that I will be an android OS user for years to come.

Well, I did mention this in my post. Missing basic features is something that has been an issue with the iPhone since the 2G. I mean, even as I use my 3GS, I still wish it had the basic feature of being able to save .GIF images.
It is frustrating sometimes, but most issues aren't that overwhelming and I wasn't too disappointed because I knew coming into the iPhone that there would be issues such as this.

In all fairness, the iPhone's battery life seems comparable to every other smartphone I've used. In fact, it actually seems a bit better in comparison to my Fuze, which is amazing when you take into consideration some of the factors, such as the larger screen, faster processor, and, most noticeably, the fact that it only has a 1219mAh battery vs the Fuze's 1340mAh.

Well, yes, the 3GS' UI is the same as the 2G's. All the iPhones uses the same OS, after all. UI changes tend to come with OS updates (regardless of which iPhone model you own) and, even then, changes are limited as, of course, Apple likes to keep their interface simple and familiar. The upcoming iPhone OS 4 is probably the biggest change in a while and even UI changes in that is limited.
Unfortunately, while I've used Android, my knowledge of that and the Nexus One is still limited. Nonetheless, I have read reviews and watched 'benchmarks' of the N1, and I still prefer the 3GS, but that is really just my preference. The N1 is a great phone, though.
P.S. I agree with you regarding the E71. It is a brilliant phone.

LOL of cos buddy...but I actually have 2 different sims (1 for my phone usage and another for an unlimited plan). So, I just use my 3GS as my router at home for my internet purposes hehehe.
I take my Nexus every where I go...I think overall the Nexus wins as its a more capable device compared to my iphone 3GS.

Yes! You are very "open" in your java sandbox! But despite the missing kernel access in a way I agree. You can probably still customize enough for the "usual" needs, and so after the decline of Windows Mobile 6.x you might consider Android the last "geek friendly" OS....

While I can agree that moving from winmo to iPhone is a good decision, have you stopped and think if your decision is still the best in light of the rich array of Android phones (such as the HTC Supersonic) available these days? The large size screen, a UI that is way better than winmo's and quite close to iPhone's, better notification system, attractive widgets, dual flash, nice camera, fast processor, ... Or are you just so happy with iPhone that you're not thinking of potentially even better phones? I'm not saying that Android is better as I don't know the answer yet myself. I'm just wondering if you have seriously given Android a chance and to find out as much as you can about it?
In your opinion (keep it short please) what is the difference between win mobile and android and pros and cons please?

I have 2 Windows phones and 2 Android phones and I can't think of a single thing the Windows phones do better than the Android phones.
Well, when I got my phone at T mobile today (I was tired of att and verizon, long story..) I asked for an android phone and I get home and see it's a windows phone...?
Mind you, I'm not surprised considering they didn't even know what GSM is when I asked if t mobile was gsm.

Well, I loved MyPhone on Windows Mobile. And I just have my Android for 3 days, but I haven't found something as good and for free yet.
Next to that, I can't think of anything I missed yet. Even eBuddy managed to easily fulfill my needs of MSN/WLM. Even with offline messaging.
There are two things i don't like about android:
First, there isn't only one good videoplayer(ffmpeg is a must have!) EDIT: Rockplayer is a nice start, but the fps is ~100% lower than the ones i get with coreplayer
And i havent found something like Audiobooster.
Try both and take the OS which you prefer

there's a lot of things to look at but the best way to choose is this.
if you are running an app and it has issues or require a bit of memory, window will lock up and then you have to reset the phone.
with android you'll get a force close notification which you just ok it and keep using it with out having to reset.

Android is still new to the game and in my opinion hasn't really got a good video and music player. There are some ones that can pass but compared to Windows and iphone they are not that great. On the flip side I plan on developing my own music player which counts for the openness of android. WinMo is arguably just as open BUT with them going a different direction with WM7 I had to jump ship. As for Androids advantages......everything else is just as good if not better than windows (except how they manage the SD card)
Well, the few minutes I've spent with the windows platform already makes me hate it. Whoever did the software for the HD2 is totally retarded. I couldn't even get myself out of whatever app happened to come on last night and I was about ready to throw this big piece of $hit out the window.
I now know what Froyo is and if I'm not mistaken, it'll have a wifi proxy which I guess it to be is that it acts like a hot spot which should put a damper on some of the greedy phone companies (IF it is released on their phones) like ATT who charges you another 30 bucks extra for connecting to your laptop.
That to me is bull**** and greed and IS costing them customers.
Verizon is better with that but I hate their support AND I think their coverage in my area is worse. The support is TOTALLY useless and I left them once because of it and I will AGAIN leave them I think and yes, mainly because of it.
I'll try the t mobile service out for a week or so and if the coverage is good, I'll return this locked piece of $hit and get me one of the unlocked phones from NEgri Electronics. If anyone hasn't heard of them yet (which kinda would surprise me) here they are...

For a buck fitty (not fifty, fitty, like fitty cents) I can get this proggy which could fix my problem but I can't do it on a locked phone. Well, they can ki$$ my ass then with all the restrictions. I'll get this one for example http://negrielectronics.com/touch-smartphone-unlocked-tmobile-2747.html , get me a monthly account instead and I can put anything I want on it. Now how the hell can I go wrong with that, AND, they're easier to sell should you want to get rid of them.
Put some of this stuff on it and some silicone case on it and you can sell it years later looking brand new which is what I did with my iPhone.
I'm going to wait for a week or so and decide if I like tmobile and if I do, I'll tell verizon where they can stick their phone.
Would you believe I had to make THREE attempts to get them to port my att number over and meanwhile, I'm paying ATT for the account. I even called and talked to VERIZON people to make sure it got done right and in BOTH cases, they screwed it up. I finally got it done the right IN The store, a WEEK after!
After all this crap AND a busted phone that was only two weeks old, I tried to get a free charging cable from one of the store manager, NOT a charger or the ac adapter thingie, just the stinkin' cable and he wouldn't even give me that. Now that is tacky and petty. Oh, the reason I wanted another cable was so I could keep one in the car cause that piece of $hit pre wouldn't hold a charge over 5-6 hours and let's not talk about TALKING time. This was a LITTLE talking and lots of stand by.
What a damn joke.
I like the pre platform and concept in general and I have several PDA's that are PALM but the PRE phone, they kinda dropped the ball on a little.
No on screen keyboard (now how hard is that to figure out), the actual keyboard should have been horizontal for size and the damn thing is a gas guzzler, AND, I don't see an option to keep the damn notifications from coming up and crowding your screen when you turn it on. Also, it's slow as $hit from when you click that you want the keypad till it finally opens up.
NO Predictive dialing and you can't get the beautiful HUGE clock to stay on top that I know of. Again, how hard is that to figure out? Does this take so long to program into the software? I mean, they almost went belly up. You'd think they had the TIME and STAFF to do things right. Sheesh!

That's not how business works. Any phone advertised on TV (like the Pre) is designed for general consumers (people who don't care about the things you're talking about). It would be a terrible business decision to spend more time and money incorporating things that 99% of their target market don't care about or don't even know they're missing. If you're posting on XDA you're probably a lot more tech savvy than the average consumer, thus phones marketed towards the average consumer won't have 100% of the features you request. I always like to buy phones that are rarer and not advertised, mainly because I like having stuff that other people don't have, but also because they usually end up being a cut above the rest of the phones on the market.

If I were you guiri_too, and can afford it, I'd order the Nexus One unlocked and as soon as it arrives, root the thing, put Froyo on it (if I could find it) and take that winblows phone back to T-Mobile. I can't believe they gave you that after asking for an Android phone. That has to be one of the dumbest salesmen ever! Or if you want to stay with T-Mobile and happen to like Sense (Espresso Sense), pick up the the MyTouch Slide. It has a keyboard, MS Exchange support and is pretty snappy to boot (speaking of boot, it only takes about a minute from hitting the power button to making a call). If you need a more business-like phone, I would suggest the Sprint Evo 4G. It's the same size as the HD2, 4.3", but it's Android. The UI looks like the HD2 as well (Sense), but it's a lot quicker and more stable. A friend of mine picked this up after having the Sprint Hero, which he got after the TouchPro (winmo) and couldn't be happier.
As far as the original question, I can only give you an anecdote; when I got my G1, my wife had a Wing which she hated. After a few months of watching me play with my phone all the time, and her Wing being replaced twice, she bought hers and was instantly hooked. We have been android fans ever since. So the advantages of Android for me are awesome stability, openness and apps, of which you don't have to use the market for (unless you get an ATT android).
Let me try to address the replies in one window.
First as for being tech savvy, yeah, I guess I am and I've been around long enough to be picky, HOWEVER, my BASIC needs are a phone I can HEAR and SEE. How come Nextel have speakers that you can hear clear across the next state and this thing I got, the HD2 I can barely hear with the fans in the car running despite them telling me it was really loud...?
Sure, I want a lot of stuff but if you read through all my info, you'll see that some of the things i don't really care about like social networking, streaming video, mp3 player and much more. LARGE FONT! How the hell hard is that to figure out? I mean, for those here who program and considering it's even in very simple programs. IS IT THAT hard to have an option of making the font bigger?
To Heybob. Bob, the problem is that I can't try and see these phones live so to speak. ALL the phones at tmobile are dummies or at least the ones I'm interested in.
Second, to be quite honest and when I think about it, I am not sure if she did mention this one was windows but I DID tell her I prefered android. In any case, NOT knowing what GSM is or if tmobile was GSM is not something I can let slide, ESPECIALLY considering she was the manager...
Now, so far, my tmobile coverage has seemed good. Yes, the phone as in the UI is still totally retarded so the windows OS has got to go. More than likely when I return this, if I still like tmobile then, I'll get a phone from Negri that's unlocked and if I'm not mistaken, he HAS Froyo phones in stock. Hold, gonna call and check..yep, he's got Nexus One with Froyo ready to ship.
Tell'em George with the long wish list sent ya if you buy one. Not that I think I'll get any referrals but hey, it never hurts when it comes time to bug them about finding me the right phone.
Anyway, back to the phones. I do NOT like this windows UI so that one is out. I like that I have found a site with something like 80,000+ apps all in one place and although I'm not stingy, when you're TRYING apps and don't know if you'll like them or not, it helps if they're cheap or free. I got something on hte Pre I didn't like but hell ,I wasn't about to ask for a $1.50 refund.
Many of the windows apps were $15 or around there. I'm not paying it if I can't get a refund if I don't like the software and I AM picky with software too.

I've owned 4 different winmo phones and I can say that android leaves those respond FOOLS in the dust.
Android is more compatible with exchange server than windows mobile solution or blackberry.
Work gets done faster and I smile a lot more now.

are you captivate owners very happy with the phone? im debating between the captivate and iphone 4.... but mostly likely will end getting the captivate. ive read some ppl having issues such as mms and gps and all that.... is the issue really bad? also how is the messaging on the device? is it kinda like the iphone? im using my iphone 2g cuz i had my tilt 2 but dropped it in water and now doesnt work.... so coming from an iphone 2g to a captivate or iphone 4 is pretty good. any suggestions and opinions are greatly appreciated!!
i struggled with the same decision. my fiance has the iphone4 and i had the 3g, so i was very used to the OS and style, etc. After a lot of research i decided to make the switch to the captivate and i am glad i did. no mms issues, and gps issues are easy to fix with a little searching in the forums. it offers so much more customization than the iphone4 and the larger amoled screen looks just as good as the retina display.
well, let me remind you something, this is the samsung captivate channel. Every single reply that you get will be slightly (or immensely) biased toward Samsung Captivate.
Currently, hardware-wise, nearly everything in the Captivate offers the top in the mobile market.

Messaging, don't worry if it's threaded or not. I'm pretty sure it is. If not, you can find app to fix that.
My phone is not rooted yet as I see there's not a reason yeeeeet. (probably soon since i hate the att bloatwares as they are actually running in the background all the time draining batteries / performance)
np. BE CAPTIVATED! You won't regret your choice. I have to admit that as of now the Android app is not THHHAT superb compared to the ios market, sometimes even halfbaked. BUT look at it this will it'll dominate soon.

iOS = Apple only.
Android = Samsung, Sony Ericsson, HTC, etc etc. It might take a while, but it's already up to par.
Overall, this is the best phone in the world (my biased opinion).
hardware wise: its the best phone available to the public in the world at this point in time. (fact)
Function wise: Once devs get through with it, it will be the best phone in the world. (Educated Guess)

-there are million useful widgets that you can use in your homescreen, even though i don't use any of them xD
-games (oh my goodness, i haven't gotten the time [or the persistence against laziness] to download the emulators, once you download the emulators, you'll be able to play nearly ANY GAMES (PSX, gameboi, etc)
-i cannot comment on the calling / messaging quality since i have tmobile, i'm waitin for the unlock code (i've been using airplane mode with wifi on)
I am extremely happy with my captivate. I think its the perfect mixture of hardware and software...though there are a few sour spots that need fixing. Throw in the versatility of android and the unlocked nature if the captivate and this phone will be very popular.
This phone basically is four devices in one for me....phone...mp3 player...camera/camcorder...and internet device.

good choice picking up the captivate instead. I checked out the vibrant b4 i got this, and its felt/looked more like the ugly stepchild of the galaxy s series.

That's literally the first thing I noticed when I got the device. I was like HOLY SH!T it's GENIUS!
Not really, but I will be soon.
I'm really disappointed with the stock ROM, but 2.2 will fix most of the issues, and a custom 2.2 rom will fix all of them.
I really wish manufacturers and carriers would leave the rom alone. Fine, load your bloatware, I get it, you're trying to generate revenue, and it's simple enough to remove those things, but my captivate, while having significantly faster hardware, is much, much slower than my Nexus One on 2.1, even after doing everything I can.
From a hardware standpoint, I'm very happy with it. The rom is seriously lacking though.
Again, I'm coming from a vanilla android phone, so the difference might not be as big if you're coming from something sense or motoblur or any of the other skins manufacturers seem to love putting on android phones for no good reason.
To answer your question simply, so far yes I am happy with the Captivate. Would I be happier with an iphone4... probably so.
The iphone4 is a better phone hardware-wise. Better screen. Better camera. Better battery life. Equal CPU/GPU. Slimmer design (not by much though). GPS that actually works.
I knew this going in (well except about how pitiful the GPS is), and still bought the Captivate. Will I keep it beyond the 30 days? I dont know. The GPS is absolutely crap. It will not track you at all, even at jogging speed. If you are standing still it locks you pretty quick and accurate. But as soon as you start to move, its over. I have tried it on my bike and it wont even track me through my neighborhood, much less at 30 mph in your car. Highway speed, forget it. Its totally unusable for anything. There's others in here that try to use it for jogging and it says they went further than they really did because when you zoom in on the path it zig zags all over the place. Just know ahead of time, if you use gps on your phone often, do not buy this phone. And dont expect samsung to put out an update anytime soon. They are notoriously bad about updating software. Just ask any samsung smartphone owner.

Hopefully soon we will start to get custom ROMs, although so far not much has been accomplished yet as the source code for the Captivate still hasnt been released.
All in all, Captivate is a good phone, iphone4 is a great phone. Thats my honest un-biased opinion and I own the Captivate and I was a long time iOS user.

I can see your point of view, but if you have any interest in modding your phone, I would wait until a good aftermarket rom is out.
The stock Captivate rom is NOT a good indication of android. It's honestly horrid, in my opinion.
I returned my iphone 4 to get this phone. Don't regret it at all and I've been an iphone guy since the 3g and upgraded every year
