Wifi Tx Power - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I originally posted this in the Hyperdrive ROM thread, but I have deleted and reposted here. I think this is the proper place.
On my Asus TF101 I used the Wifi Tx Power app to lower the Tx power of the wifi. I found this to be a significant power savings. I had to install iwconfig per this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1899272
I tried this on my rooted Note 10.1 (8013) and I seem to get nonsensical Tx power reported back from iwconfig. If I set Tx power to 4dBm it reads back as 400dBm +/-. If I try 11dBm it reports back 1100+/-. I thought that it still may be working even though the Tx power being reported doesn't make sense, but it doesn't seem to be actually adjusting the tx power. It tried this from the Wifi Tx Power app and manually from a terminal emulator.
I think this is a good way to save additional battery power when your wifi coverage is more than adequate. I appreciate any help in figuring this out.
Thanks

Battery\power issue, please help.

Hi,
I am having an issue with my battery: it drains really really fast, I mean I am loosing 10% per hour. It all started when I flushed my first 128mb compatible rom. I went from Mo3ulla latest to Ivans and back to Mo3ulla and all three had this issue. I also noticed that phone doesn't go to standby, backlight off - works, but turning power off after 2 min setting just doesn't do anything.
Apps I have are:
SPB PocketPlus 4, pBar, A2DPToggle, TCPMP, AEButton and that is pretty much it.
Any ideas and help is very much appreciated.
1. kill resident programs on device such us SPB PocketPlus 4, pBar,
2. check device battery status // they may be in charging status (due hardware bug)
3. execute instructions which i write in theme

did all of the things you mentioned in the thread, problem still exists.
The reason I started a new thread is beause it doesn't seem to be rom related. Could the reason be just old or defective battery?
How old is your device/battery?
If it is older than six-eight months, most likely it is soon going to die. That's how it started for me too. Then it'll get worse, like losing charge when plugged into the mains, and your device suddenly dying at around 50%, which will increase later.
The easiest solution would be to buy a new battery. If that solves the case, then cool. If it doesn't, you'll have a backup battery when your current one dies
Getting worse
I've had the device for about 4-6 month, not sure how long previous owner has had it for. New battery is on the way.
Tried everything. I flushed official rom form i-Mate and then Mo3ulla's latest and radio 1.15 - no luck. On one of the forums here I've read that taking battery out for about 5 min helps with fast draining, I've tried it and think it did help for a bit (I could be wrong) but then all problems came back.
Problems:
1. Registered applications after working properly for few days - now gives an error that the app license data can not be red.
PBar 1.5 top bar indicator moving around on the bar, it starts in the original right position and then moves to the middle of the bar.
2. "Turn device OFF if not used for"... option in power settings doesn't work - the device never turns off. "Turn backlight off" - works fine.
As Mo3ulla suggested I checked the GSM band settings - it is set for PCS1900 which I believe is correct for T-Mobile USA. Is it?
I just hope is is not a hardware issue as I am in USA and there are no UNI repair shops in the area.
If you have any idea on what to do please let me know as I am close to desperate mode and will try anything at this point.
when my battery started dying at 50% within 2 weeks i could only get 1 1/2 minutes of use out of it. i tried different ROMS, followed the instructions in the wiki but none of that worked for me.
Basically it was just the battery, i have used it everyday for about 2 years so i had my use out of it. I would definately buy a new battery for what they cost. i got mine on ebay for about £7 ($14 or so)
Yep

NEw batter is on the way already, I am just affraid that it is something else, like hardware error, and if that's the case - I am screwed.
I've noticed the same thing with my Universe. It started after new ROM upgrade just 3 days ago.
Best way

no its not hardware .. in your case its battery ... when battery arrives you will need to proper start use it ....
Update: It's alive
Well it is all better now. I installed Mo3ullas v1(not 128 MB) and device behaved much better: "Turn off power" setting worked and all in all this was excellent rom except for one thing - no A2DP. Then I went with Ivan's V1 and it all looks good now, no strange behavior from apps, power of works. A2DP works and so on, so I guess it was the issue of compatibility of Rom and Device. For some reason 128MB roms don't agree with my (and only my) device. I am looking to by the 64MB ram chips and do the upgrade will see what happens. Thank you all for you help.

Mo3ulla could you clarify what you mean by proper start use it?
Also if anyone knows where I can order just a couple of those 64MB chips - would be greatly appreciated. So far all distributors I contacted want to sell them by thousands and the site that was mentioned here (don't remember the url) that does sell them individually wants $80 and that is way too steep.

Is there an app to set custom wifi receiver power?

On laptops, one of the most common settings to save battery power is to set the power of the wife receiver to the minimum.
For my limited experience, it seems to me that this is not possible on android devices, since I cannot find a single app for that.
In case I am wrong, could anyone please point me to the right app / setting?
Thank you

its probably possible im not sure do some reasearch on the wifi attenas used b/c i'm almost positive it would be possible to turn down but most of these phones have problems connecting wifi as it is turning it down would just make it worse for some might as well just kill it like everyone does! notifications power widgets are the best way!

Most of the times I am using WIFI at home, where my router is set at 6% of its power
and I get excellent signal everywhere with phone and laptop.
I reckon that I could compensate for the reduced power of the receiver on the phone by increasing the signal on the router....
So I guess it really depends on the situation....
But for sure being able to set the power of my receiver would be a more than welcome option for battery saving and not only....
You can't reduce power of a receiver because it's at a set level. Receivers don't draw much power, but transmitters do. If the transmitter circuitry was designed to be easily variable, then an app could vary the output if it was written for that chipset.
If you want to use less power then park yourself next to the cell tower and/or access point. It's just like in real life. If A receives a low transmitting signal from B, then A is going to turn up it's transmitting power to high when it is A's turn to transmit.
Another example is if you and your friend are within two feet of each other and it's quiet around you, then you speak in a normal to below normal loudness in your voice. Now your friend walks outside and goes maybe 200 feet away from you, that same loudness of voice used previously isn't enough for the other person to hear you. You yell. Your friend has to try and listen harder to hear you and he automatically yells back to you.
I know this is an over simplified example and it doesn't always work like that with radio transmitters and receivers. This is just an example without getting too overly technical. You can turn down a receiver but that would be like putting earplugs in your ears. You don't hear as well.
That is why i said that I would increase the power of my wifi router at home to compensate for lower power on the phone receiver ...
Anyway, let's close it here

[Q] The ROM I'm using has a WiFi problem (xuantun)

Sometimes it won't find any networks, and sometimes it'll just find one particular distant network briefly that I have no relation to. Often plugging it into the mains will solve the problem. USB power will not. Usually the problem occurs with a low or high charged battery and rarely in between. Manual connection does not help.
I know that there's not much to go on really, but I wondered if anyone who knew more about this stuff than I do could offer suggestions for a fix? The ROM is Xuantunt's 7.8 ROM v5.5. A newer version is out but I can't flash it as I'm away. The problem has been persistent on all releases that I've tried.
Thanks

WiFi limited possiable fix

Hey guys I started having the limited connectivity Wi-Fi issue today. I've seen this before on the Slate 7 that Samsung put out a while back. I did some research and discovered this is apparently an issue for more than just me. What I did to fix it on both my Surface Pro and on my slate was to go into the power settings under any of the plans, balanced, performance, or power saver. It doesn't mater which one. There are some advanced options that will allow you to change the wireless adapter to maximum performance. I've done this on two separate windows tablets and this has fixed it both times. If anyone can verify that this works for them I will repost with some pictures and better instructions. If anyone has any questions just PM me

This was happening to me on my Acer W500 tablet
When I was connected to a poor signal WiFi connection in work I was getting limited connection.
I thought it was just the WiFi being too far away in my building but realized after reading your post it was power options - the issue only occured when I was on low battery.
I had a look at the power options and changed the option for WiFi (on battery) to maximum perfermance instead of Power saving
Detailed instructions attached from PSR - hope this helps some others
Nice work Andy,

Barrie, I believe the Rt does have that option you have to access it from the desktop mode by tapping on the batteries icon. I had an Rt before exchanging it for the pro. I'l double check on the demo at best buy I could be mistaking.

My wife had this issue recently ~2 days ago. She has been using the device for several hours but I'm not too sure how long the battery was but it certainly wasn't low to the point where it needed a charge rightaway...definitely in the 30-40% range left..well she was frustrated for about 45 mins but what fixed her issue was I told her to run cmd as admin and did a netsh winsock reset [enter] and then ran netsh int ipv4 reset [enter].
She did a reboot and she was all set. I wish the wifi power settings you digged up was available on the RT as well. Sometimes I just wonder what the MS engineers were smoking when they were settings this options in the OS.

[Q] Completely disable wifi?

I've searched around, but all the threads I've found for wifi-disabling solutions floating around seem to not be doing the trick(to be fair, I haven't tried eleting system/etc as I'm still unsure if that solution was specific to that phone). Basically, I bought my G2x secondhand and the previous owner made it very clear that he dropped it a few times and, after one of the drops, wifi and bluetooth would endlessly try to connect if switched on, but never actually connect and, after testing various roms and fixes, I confirmed he was telling the truth. It seemed that the portion of the SOC responsible for these functions had fried or become dislodged. Of course, for $50, coming from a Sidekick 4g(RIP) and only needing a good device until income tax returns when I can get a decent future-proof upgrade, I couldn't have cared less. I'm running Benee's cm10 hackfest, so you see this is a problem for me. Is there any way to completely remove these two functions from the system? All they're able to do is idly waste battery life. The phone and ROM run great otherwise and I've gone into the secret menu and set it to WCDMA/GSM Auto, so I am 99 percent certain the wifi is the issue. Also, please don't suggest downgrading to an ICS or GB ROM as I've become quite spoiled by JB's extra little frills to the point that, if nobody can help me, I'll just be content to go for a 3500mah fat battery. Thanks!

^^^This thread said this, "Certificate installer com.android.certinstaller CertInstaller.apk /No/ (Web?) Certificate Installer. When removed, the WIFI will not be turned on (Automatically turned off)."
I would try removing CertInstaller.apk from the System/App directory. Everything in android is controlled by an app (apk). I am fairly confident you will be able to figure out how to completely shut down, remove or disable wifi capabilities with the removal or editing of a certain apk. Before fiddling around and removing things in the System folder PLEASE make a back up of your current setup in case you delete something IMPORTANT and your phone goes into boot loop or something worse.
