Im not sure if this has been discussed before as I did search but cant find anything.
Today I called T-Mobile for the first time to complaint that my MMS is not working (known problem for samsung galaxy s 4g) and asking them when is the update available to fix this issue, and My SMS is in and out as well ?
I didnt tell him what program I have/downloaded on the phone since he didnt ask.
I get transfered straight to higher (level 2) technical support. He said dont touch the phone while he was checking something and the phone will reboot. The phone did reboot and the SMS get fixed.
This is what Alarmed me so much.
The tech support ( I wont publish his name here) know exactly what software I have on the phone (downloaded from the market), what is currently running, he also know I have advance task manager among other thing.
He even knew my Gmail address I use on the phone and google market account.
How is this possible ?
Is there anyway I can block this because I dont like when T-mobile snooping on my phone. If they can see the apps I downloaded on my phone and know my gmail address, know what apps currently running, Can they also access my email through my phone ?
Honestly never heard of that. Thats wild!

dude there are 30 plus million subscribers in t-mobile. unless your a celebrity or a son of bill gates or something they wont waste their time nosing on what you install or who you talk to everyday. anyway that less of your problems if you stress about that, they got your full name and ssn in file and a credit card number. if thay wanted to mess you up thats what they will go for.
I wouldn't sweat it too much, it's just like any computer service company that can push updates to your computer.. All they did was push an update and had your phone reboot.. Now if you had some terrorist shizah on there, then I'd be worried, but other than that, they've probably already forgotten about you!

last time i see this is still USA where privacy matter whether you are celebrity or not.
You wouldnt enter someone else house without asking for permission wont you (unless if you want to get arrested ) ?
The guy didnt ask for permission and I never give my approval for Tmobile to snoop into my phone.
Like I said it suprise me for the tech support to mention the apps I downloaded , running in the background and my gmail account associated to my phone and market account.
Those action has nothing to do with fixing my SMS connection ???
It doesn't surprise me at all. The OTA capabilities are there in a lot of devices, including your DSL or cable modem. Google owns everything you do on your Android phone, including your location even when you're not doing anything. Unfortunately, the Facebook mentality about privacy is winning.

Unless you removed it, yes, you do.
I was surprised to see it on my phone as well since I hadn't installed it.. talk about bloat... why would the phone come stock with this?
They've been doing this for years, it's nothing new at all.. Notice how you call and they automatically know what kind of phone you have? Same premise. I've called multiple times with phones that were unlocked from other networks also, they could see the phone, and never cared. Take off your tinfoil hat, there's nothing to worry about.

No matter what phone you have, T-Mobile (and I'd assume AT&T) can find out what phone you are using, even if it's not a T-Mobile branded phone.
I wouldn't worry, they aren't gonna do some stupid **** with that, they just did that to repair your phone. I honestly doubt they'd risk losing a customer over a little thing like that.
Google is the one you should be worried about. They know where your phone is, exactly to the millimeter (I don't think that really works with the Vibrant though. xD).
u called to get your phone fixed didnt you? and they did just that didnt they? if you are so worried about your privacy i got a old motorola razr sitting in my closet, ill gladly trade your sgs4
Google is the devil, and will take over the planet, and join steve jobs. Put on your tin foil hats!
To further this, its done through rescue me. It is built into the kernel. On the Vibrant froyo leaks i have leaked out it is there also. We just remove the Rescue Me app.
I can remove the drivers and credentials from the kernel if people are that concerned about it. I wouldnt be though.

A sysctl to enable/disable would be my personal choice, but I have yet to build custom kernels for Android (though have for FreeBSD and OpenWRT) so I don't know how feasible that is with the source access we have.

I'm a computer repair tech. One of the first questions I'm going to ask is have you installed any new hardware or software? Most of the time I've found out software was the root problem of the issue. Not always, just Most of the time. So, it doesn't supprise me that he can see what is installed on your phone. It gives him a idea of what the problem can be. I would be more concerned what NSA or space aliens are doing with your phone.

I'd say simply Calling it, and leaving a few Reward if Found Texts!
So, I do deliveries, and my phone is always in my car as the GPS is a MUST. Well, tonight, the unfortunate happened. GOt in my car, about to head home from my shift, when my stereo popped up and said failed to connect with bluetooth device. "Uh oh, i must've left my phone at work, wonder why i brought it out of my car..." Turned around, a block down the road, no such luck pairing while in the parking lot next to the small office building. "maybe it just doesn't reach this far" went inside and searched everywhere. No luck. had another employee call it form his cell. "Welcome to verizon wireless..." he hung up and tried again, same message. Third time it went to voicemail. So, i called verizon, they suspended my line, and added the ESN to the stolen list.
Well, now I am without a phone in a critical position where one is needed. Maybe I can get by for a few days without, but will slow me down alot, and my preformance based pay will be docked massively. Question is, what phone should I be looking at? I still have my upgrade eligibility, but instead of $100 credit which I earned on a more expensive plan, I only have $30. So, verizon has screwed me over. Also to find out, i have not been paying insurance all this time, when I never requested for it to be removed.
What phones should I be looking at? any new changes to verizons policies/pricing that I should watch out for?

Maybe you can install Lookout Security remotely. The free version will show you where the phone is on a pc and you can do contact backup as well as make the phone scream. I have never tried to install Lookout myself remotely so I don't know what if any responses it may ask on the phone, but I do have this app.

I think I may have found a way to catch the bastard who stole the phone. I hope facebook logs the IP when such an attempt occurs, including logins. How do I go about retrieving such IP?

I don't know why I am sharing this here.
I have just listed my G2x on Amazon and Craigslist.
This phone continues to drop the signal. I am getting calls dropped (is there ANYTHING more annoying than dropping a call - especially when it is an important one?!), signal lost and everything that comes along with it.
NOTHING (nothing!) should overshadow this issue with the phone! Not dual-core, 8MB cam, ICS or battary life.
What isn't clear to me is WHY others are accepting this.
Perhaps though, this is is the reason that the G2x (despite being a phenomenal phone on paper) barely sells online and is hard to sell in general.
Perhaps we (the people who even care enough to join forums and so on), represent the minority.
Goodbye G2x!

Probably because it isn't as widespread a problem as you're thinking it is. I'm on T-Mobile as well and my G2X gets great signal and call quality.
Not saying it's not a real issue for you, just saying its probably not a widespread issue for the majority of G2X users or I'm sure there'd be about 30 threads about it, all created within about a day of each other and all saying the same thing.

I never knew it could be a SIM issue. I WILL CHECK THAT OUT !!!! Going to the TMobile store right now!
Will update.
Thank you all
IT WAS THE SIM CARD INDEED !!!!!
Part of the reason I posted this here, is because I knew the good people of XDA will start a brainstorming discussion.
My other SIM card was very bad looking, and it is now changed to a NEW one. The TMobile representative said that I MUST change my sim card when she saw it.
I AM VERY HAPPY I posted my situation here!!!
No lost calls (did a 20 min call to test it) for now - but obviously will check on that more to confirm
THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL YOUR HELP
(and thank you not for the guy that decided to send me a message saying "U think we care"?!)
Nice to hear that. Despite the other issues with g2x, I never had dropped calls. Speaker could be better but for calls, phone is reliable.

thank you!!!

1. Are you running the stock firmware?
2. Has this issue continued from the time you purchased the phone up until now.
3. Does the issue appear to be location specific? The reason I ask is because you stated it was working after the SIM was replaced then come back 24 hours later saying you had problems again.
4. Have you tried contacting T-Mobile customer support? They most likely won't be able to solve your issue if it is a problem with your handset (beyond trying a SIM swap, they will have you try your SIM in another known working handset typically, to isolate your device) but they will be able to rule out issues with your account, the network, etc.
OK I'm starting this post for my buddy who has a sprint galaxy nexus we live in south Florida and spring took there towers off line today to do some service to there towers well when they put them back online they deactivated his service and when he called customer service he told them his phone was rooted and unlocked with a custom ROM and they told him that sprint probably seen that his phone was rooted and that is why they deactivated his device well he has it back on now and is getting no data what so ever

cant see that happening tbh, why would a phone network care about what you do to your device? Only the phone manufacturer would care about you invalidating your warranty if you were to book it in for repair.

Tell him to do a profile update. Settings -> About Phone -> Sprint updates -> Update Profile (if I remember correctly) and then Update PRL. Otherwise just call up Sprint and tell them he's not getting data and they should be able to refresh his profile from their end. Also, they can't do anything about you rooting your phone as it's yours. If he starts tethering like 50GB a month or something stupid like that, then yeah there's an issue. But I'm assume it's normal usage. Why he even bothered telling the lady his phone is rooted is beyond me...No offense, but that was pretty stupid.

Hey what's up guys? I'm the guy with the Sprint issues. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all why they would care about my device but the way she made it sound was that Sprint cannot restore my 3g data because my device was rooted. She told me that my best bet would be to flash back to stop and start over. She concluded with an offer to follow up with me after I flashed back to stock and she could rectify the data situation then. Call me crazy but I think I want the opinion of the guys who know what's going on and not the one of the chick reading off her computer screen. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Several things I have to say:
1. Do not EVER EVER EVER tell your phone company that you rooted your device because the things that run through their mind are:
a) ****! Now he can tether without paying!
b) We're not fixing your phone now because you voided the warranty.
I hope she didn't put notes on your account for b) because that can prevent you from getting your phone repaired in a Sprint store.
Also, it depends what software is on your phone. Have you tried going back to stock? Have you tried calling Sprint again and not mentioning that your phone is rooted?

Technician notes are different from account notes, so if you were to go into a store for a repair I'm sure they wouldn't see that. Try reactivating your phone. Call Sprint, tell them:
"I called a while ago because I was having issues with data. A rep told me to punch in a code in the dialer and he also gave me the MSL code for my phone, but I can't find where I wrote it down. Do you mind telling me how to re-do the Handsfree Activation?"
Follow the instructions and see if that works. If nothing comes up on the dialer when you punch in the code, your ROM doesn't have Handsfree-Activation included. Try going to a stock ROM or ROM that has the Sprint menus in it.

Technician notes are different from account notes, so if you were to go into a store for a repair I'm sure they wouldn't see that. Try reactivating your phone. Call Sprint, tell them:

I'm gonna have to jump on this first thing in the morning. Thanks for the advice. I will post any results on this thread as they unfold.
I would go as far to say it would be illegal for the phone company to cut you off for tethering a device that you own. (There are apps such as FoxFi that bypass the 'tethering tax' mobile networks try to claim) However, as someone said previously if you are downloading heavily then I guess they could cut you off for that.
At T-Mobile, NO such policy of cutting you off exists and they rely solely on throttling and packet shaping.

Thing is, he barely knows what he's doing. He's rooted and ROM'd but that's it. He's new to this whole thing. I don't even think he was tethering; I was just using it as an example for why a phone company wouldn't want you rooting their devices. But yeah I agree, you can't get cut off for modifying your device like that unless it was doing something that it logically should not be able to do (like if you were using it as a 24/7 server to host a website or something crazy).

I found a S3 today and it looks BRAND NEW. no scratches, in a case, looks perfect. So I want to be able to give it back to the owner. I went into my verizon store and they said they wouldnt do anything. It was a young guy and maybe he didnt care or maybe because its hawaii and everyone is laid back... Anyways, I want to be able to return this phone to its owner. I tried putting in random passwords for the lock screen and i got up to attempt 55 and its not asking for an email; though i dont know if it would show their email. Anyway I can hook it up USB and use a debugger and grab some kind of info? Name? Number? Email? Bypass lock screen to call one of their contacts? Any help would be great!
Call a contact in the across book or put up a craigslish add in lost+found

check if it has an sd card, swap it on your phone or direct to a pc, look for identifying information.

hey man, cant really help but wanted to say thanks for being a good person.
Id try the vzw route again. im surprised theyre unwilling to help. maybe call the 1800 number and tehy might be able to help and relay information to the store closest to you wtihout giving out the persons information to you over the phone. or call local PD and see if anyone reported something like that stolen. maybe they have the persons info on hand in case its found.

what is the across book? If I go to emergency call it doesn't show any contacts. There is no sd card, and I have a att phone so I can't put the sim card in my phone to look at it for contacts. I posted a CL ad already, and will go to the police station and talk to them, though they ha e been rated the most corrupt in the US its hard to see if they will help or just take the phone. I know what it feels like to lose a phone, hopefully I can find the owner!

I wouldn't worry about the police necessarily especially if they say they're bad. I'd say keep it, and if nobody claims it from craigslist keep it and sell it after wiping it.

Yea there's not much to do at this point except play the waiting game. Usually after a week or so it'll be claimed IF its gonna be claimed.

It has a pin lock and no way to see the contacts. What does everyone feel a reasonable time would be to wait before claiming it as my own?
Maybe a week

Id try verizon one more time. If theyre willing to let you keep someone elses device then my conscious would be clear to be hoenst with you.
A carrier should be more willing to help you in this situation youre doing the right thing.
I'll try them again and see. Anyone know if it will work using my att sim card? I know the phone had a message that said global mode and its the i535 version

Carrier is not useful at all! i once ended up buying A AT&T Iphone and it was around the time they started Black Listing IMEI, Anyways long story short..the guy who sold it to me had stolen it! So went to the Store to try to see if they will call the owner and give it back. They told me if id try to do that i could possibly end up in trouble and just toss the device in the garbage or keep it as a Ipod.

That would still keep the lock if all you did was wipe the caches. I had an idea of maybe using a no wipe stock image to Odin flash but wouldn't the same thing happen with the lock screen? Either way, I think runs the risk of it bootlooping and there would be less chance of getting through and calling someone. If it's rooted, maybe there is a nandroid you could restore and maybe they didn't set the lockscreen up?
