Im not sure if this has been discussed before as I did search but cant find anything.
Today I called T-Mobile for the first time to complaint that my MMS is not working (known problem for samsung galaxy s 4g) and asking them when is the update available to fix this issue, and My SMS is in and out as well ?
I didnt tell him what program I have/downloaded on the phone since he didnt ask.
I get transfered straight to higher (level 2) technical support. He said dont touch the phone while he was checking something and the phone will reboot. The phone did reboot and the SMS get fixed.
This is what Alarmed me so much.
The tech support ( I wont publish his name here) know exactly what software I have on the phone (downloaded from the market), what is currently running, he also know I have advance task manager among other thing.
He even knew my Gmail address I use on the phone and google market account.
How is this possible ?
Is there anyway I can block this because I dont like when T-mobile snooping on my phone. If they can see the apps I downloaded on my phone and know my gmail address, know what apps currently running, Can they also access my email through my phone ?
Honestly never heard of that. Thats wild!

dude there are 30 plus million subscribers in t-mobile. unless your a celebrity or a son of bill gates or something they wont waste their time nosing on what you install or who you talk to everyday. anyway that less of your problems if you stress about that, they got your full name and ssn in file and a credit card number. if thay wanted to mess you up thats what they will go for.
I wouldn't sweat it too much, it's just like any computer service company that can push updates to your computer.. All they did was push an update and had your phone reboot.. Now if you had some terrorist shizah on there, then I'd be worried, but other than that, they've probably already forgotten about you!

You wouldnt enter someone else house without asking for permission wont you (unless if you want to get arrested ) ?
The guy didnt ask for permission and I never give my approval for Tmobile to snoop into my phone.
Like I said it suprise me for the tech support to mention the apps I downloaded , running in the background and my gmail account associated to my phone and market account.
Those action has nothing to do with fixing my SMS connection ???
It doesn't surprise me at all. The OTA capabilities are there in a lot of devices, including your DSL or cable modem. Google owns everything you do on your Android phone, including your location even when you're not doing anything. Unfortunately, the Facebook mentality about privacy is winning.

Unless you removed it, yes, you do.
I was surprised to see it on my phone as well since I hadn't installed it.. talk about bloat... why would the phone come stock with this?
They've been doing this for years, it's nothing new at all.. Notice how you call and they automatically know what kind of phone you have? Same premise. I've called multiple times with phones that were unlocked from other networks also, they could see the phone, and never cared. Take off your tinfoil hat, there's nothing to worry about.

No matter what phone you have, T-Mobile (and I'd assume AT&T) can find out what phone you are using, even if it's not a T-Mobile branded phone.
I wouldn't worry, they aren't gonna do some stupid **** with that, they just did that to repair your phone. I honestly doubt they'd risk losing a customer over a little thing like that.
Google is the one you should be worried about. They know where your phone is, exactly to the millimeter (I don't think that really works with the Vibrant though. xD).
u called to get your phone fixed didnt you? and they did just that didnt they? if you are so worried about your privacy i got a old motorola razr sitting in my closet, ill gladly trade your sgs4
Google is the devil, and will take over the planet, and join steve jobs. Put on your tin foil hats!
To further this, its done through rescue me. It is built into the kernel. On the Vibrant froyo leaks i have leaked out it is there also. We just remove the Rescue Me app.
I can remove the drivers and credentials from the kernel if people are that concerned about it. I wouldnt be though.

A sysctl to enable/disable would be my personal choice, but I have yet to build custom kernels for Android (though have for FreeBSD and OpenWRT) so I don't know how feasible that is with the source access we have.

I'm a computer repair tech. One of the first questions I'm going to ask is have you installed any new hardware or software? Most of the time I've found out software was the root problem of the issue. Not always, just Most of the time. So, it doesn't supprise me that he can see what is installed on your phone. It gives him a idea of what the problem can be. I would be more concerned what NSA or space aliens are doing with your phone.

I hope in not posting in the wrong part of this forum but I was freaked out today at the tmobile store. It all starts last night when I goggle map searched "bar and grill" and later searched on browser "screen names" looking for screen name ideas. So, this morning my wife and I go to tmobile to pay our bill. The clerk in an attempt to talk to my wife says "so did you find a good screen name last night? " She had no idea what he was talking about. Then he asks "how was the bar and grill? " I was immediately angry. I know there was recent proof carriers collect our data, but not only does tmobile collect logs of most things we do on our phones, the make it available to any ass working in a tmobile store! I would v believed it was that bad without seeing it for myself. I told him to give me a print out of that info he was reading but he refused. So now I'm on an AOSP BUILD. The rom I was using before was weapon btw. Why is spyware in custom roms? Does anyone work at tmobile that can confirm this? Are AOSP builds the only way to combat this? I can't believe any asshole at a tmobile store can just punch in a number and see everything we do on our phones!
I'd love to know what you guys think. Similar experiences?
Wow, I'm shocked. I know they collect data but it shouldn't be available to anyone. What rom are you using?

I'm going to speak to an attorney friend of mine but i do believe that is extremely illegal.
Did your rep had your phone? Cause if he did, he could have been going through the search history. Either way he shouldn't be going through them.
Dang, that's real bs. I would definately seek legal action.
Well, I would assume all carriers log all data accessed (via mobile data connection at least) to supply to the gov't for profiling and legal purposes. But allowing Joe Schmoe at the store access to it is definitely a violation of your privacy. The contract probably allows them to monitor your activity but that's a bit of an overshare if you ask me.
Well you can always get check and or get rid of the Carrier IQ thing that tracks your information.
You need a rooted phone to do so and then go here to download the app because it is not on the android market.

*Note: do a backup of your phone before you do this just incase. I haven't checked if its on our phones just yet but more than likely it probably is.
**Update: Having trouble with the app on my g2x with stock rom/faux froyo kernel.05. It keeps giving an "Error copying Busybox" so the App won't update to the pro version that you need. Waiting for Dev response

This story is BS. Store employees do not have access to that kind of data. Almost no one within T-Mobile could get anywhere near that kind of data even if they did record any of it. Also, none of the official G2x firmwares carry CIQ.

Regular Sales Reps or even Mgrs shouldn't have any access to that kind of information. None of the systems they use can dig that deep. They can see details about minutes, texts and your bill items, etc. but thats about the extent of it. Especially through CAM, Watson or Quickview. Although I would be surprised if the network engineers couldn't get that data if they were high up enough. The carrier iq thing isn't much of a surprise to me.
Weapon is based on the stock 2.3.3 rom so the OP is plausible, not probable, but certainly not busted. It has just been enhanced but most of it is stock TMO rom.
But I do think the OP is pure BS. That type of data would not be available at the store level and an employee who revealed such info would be subject to immediate termination.

In July 2011, my Nexus S was stolen. I went to the police but they said they probably couldn't recover the device. So I just kinda let it go.
Well, a few weeks ago I found out the the phone was still connected to my Market account. This provides a bit of a security concern because I've got my credit card on my market account too, but they haven't bought anything. Just for fun, I decided to download and install Plan B to the phone, and within a few hours, I got four emails of the phone's location within 15 meters. Well, I didn't have time to bring that to the police, and that was eleven days ago. So I have a few questions:
1. I want to be able to get a more recent location because I'm afraid the police will say the location is too many days old. I know you can text "locate" or whatever to the phone but it's not my number anymore. (I know this because on my market account it says it's an AT&T phone whereas I'm on T-Mobile.)
2. Is there any way at all to remote remove the app and re install it?
3. Is there another app similar to Plan B that I can do the same thing?
4. Is there anything else I can do?
-Matthew
That really sucks. I know Lookout had an option on their site to collect the location through the internet, no phone number required. Don’t know if it's 100% sure, but it's worth a shot. Really hope you get your phone back. Good luck!

You should be able to login to your Google voice account and see which number it now forwards to. Assuming you had it on the phone and they did set it up. If not you can just text to your Google voice number and it should go through.

Well I want to wipe this piece of **** thing, this phone is having so many problems it is a refurb so that explains it...
Have you guys ever had any problems like... here's one
Sometimes my phone freezes, then when the screen turns on the four main icons (phone web, email etc..) are oriented portrait while staying in their same spot, basically rotating 90 degrees to the right.
What the eff...
Also what will happen to my apps which I spent money on... will I have to buy them again? (of course not that sounds like a ****ty corporate world talking)
Also do you guys think that I have a virus?
This random app popped up in one of my windows, called "search" the icon is a magnifying glass this happened to me recently and I installed norton, **** me man viruses for phones?
I did not install this app, nor put it on my screen... so I'm assuming that it is not my work.
Somebody's got to make money somewhere I Guess...
If you guys could answer my questions, I'd be greatly satisfied.
Thanks
Your paid apps are backed up by google, after wipe, just go into the market hit menu/my apps. I'm guessing your stock?
And I would just wipe and see if that fixes your issues. Wiping deletes pretty much everything on your phone except the sdcards. Before you wipe go into accounts and settings and back your **** up with google such as contacts, wifi passwords, i think even apps...then wipe
The apps you bought on the market are saved to your gmail account.

I'm waiting to develop my own design (on my blog) or if somebody else builds it
I don't mind the stock stuff, I run the Infusion kernel for 1.8ghz speed
Damn I have to do all this crap again...
Thank you guys for the response
I've had freezes too. It's not always the phone but apps.
As like others have said, doing a data only wipe will clear out all installed apps and app data, any user created content like media and docs is saved to sd or extsd and won't be cleared with a data wipe.
After you perform the wipe, be aware of what apps you install and the affect they have on your phone. Don't just start mass installing everything again. Also be aware of all widgets you setup on home screens as they start services that stay resident and take up CPU and RAM.
These smartphones are basically PC's and are subject to the same potential for problems that plague PC's. Too many programs running together.
If your phone has true hardware problems..remember the steps leading up to the hang condition and attempt to replicate it. If you can't replicate it easily it may be a transient condition, otherwise try an alternate method to narrow down what part of the phone is failing.
If you can I.D. the problem and you're sure it's the hardware, take it to AT&T and explain it to them. They may give you an exchange right in the store and transfer your data to the replacement. No charge.
And as always before any major change...BACKUP YOUR DATA!!!!!
Thank god for Google! What would the world be without it? I hope you guys don't plan on answering that question. Lol

cant see that happening tbh, why would a phone network care about what you do to your device? Only the phone manufacturer would care about you invalidating your warranty if you were to book it in for repair.

Tell him to do a profile update. Settings -> About Phone -> Sprint updates -> Update Profile (if I remember correctly) and then Update PRL. Otherwise just call up Sprint and tell them he's not getting data and they should be able to refresh his profile from their end. Also, they can't do anything about you rooting your phone as it's yours. If he starts tethering like 50GB a month or something stupid like that, then yeah there's an issue. But I'm assume it's normal usage. Why he even bothered telling the lady his phone is rooted is beyond me...No offense, but that was pretty stupid.

Hey what's up guys? I'm the guy with the Sprint issues. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all why they would care about my device but the way she made it sound was that Sprint cannot restore my 3g data because my device was rooted. She told me that my best bet would be to flash back to stop and start over. She concluded with an offer to follow up with me after I flashed back to stock and she could rectify the data situation then. Call me crazy but I think I want the opinion of the guys who know what's going on and not the one of the chick reading off her computer screen. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hey what's up guys? I'm the guy with the Sprint issues. It makes absolutely no sense to me at all why they would care about my device but the way she made it sound was that Sprint cannot restore my 3g data because my device was rooted. Several things I have to say:
1. Do not EVER EVER EVER tell your phone company that you rooted your device because the things that run through their mind are:
a) ****! Now he can tether without paying!
b) We're not fixing your phone now because you voided the warranty.
I hope she didn't put notes on your account for b) because that can prevent you from getting your phone repaired in a Sprint store.
Also, it depends what software is on your phone. Have you tried going back to stock? Have you tried calling Sprint again and not mentioning that your phone is rooted?

I asked her if there were going to be notes on my account mentioning it being rooted and she said yes but she said she was putting another note stating that the phone was being returned to stock. So I don't know. I'm learning and the main thing I'm learning is that the more I try to learn about this ****, the worse it's getting. The thing I hate the most is that this is a way to break away from the communist machine that is Sprint but somehow they still have me by the balls.

Technician notes are different from account notes, so if you were to go into a store for a repair I'm sure they wouldn't see that. Try reactivating your phone. Call Sprint, tell them:
"I called a while ago because I was having issues with data. A rep told me to punch in a code in the dialer and he also gave me the MSL code for my phone, but I can't find where I wrote it down. Do you mind telling me how to re-do the Handsfree Activation?"
Follow the instructions and see if that works. If nothing comes up on the dialer when you punch in the code, your ROM doesn't have Handsfree-Activation included. Try going to a stock ROM or ROM that has the Sprint menus in it.

I'm gonna have to jump on this first thing in the morning. Thanks for the advice. I will post any results on this thread as they unfold.
I would go as far to say it would be illegal for the phone company to cut you off for tethering a device that you own. (There are apps such as FoxFi that bypass the 'tethering tax' mobile networks try to claim) However, as someone said previously if you are downloading heavily then I guess they could cut you off for that.
At T-Mobile, NO such policy of cutting you off exists and they rely solely on throttling and packet shaping.

Thing is, he barely knows what he's doing. He's rooted and ROM'd but that's it. He's new to this whole thing. I don't even think he was tethering; I was just using it as an example for why a phone company wouldn't want you rooting their devices. But yeah I agree, you can't get cut off for modifying your device like that unless it was doing something that it logically should not be able to do (like if you were using it as a 24/7 server to host a website or something crazy).

I lost my phone last week and it was found today because the "finder/thief" return the phone to my service provider after I requested the IMEI to be blocked.
After I got my phone, everything has already been factory reset by the "finder/thief", the SD was missing, we know who probably took it. No wonder whereismydroid and Plan B apps never worked, because they are absolutely useless. All thieves have to do is take the battery and sim card out, go home, factory reset with ODIN or something, all your information and those so called tracking Apps are gone, and Plan B can NOT be installed remotely because your gmail is no longer signed into your phone.
So IMO these apps are useless.
user installed apps? yea they are. its why i flash cerberus as a system app (survives a factory reset). i dont have a pin lock or anything of teh sort to make teh theif want to reset. instead im quite alright with him opening it up and calling/texting whomever he wants cuz ill be tracking him the whole time. chances are the guy who buste dteh window of yoru car to get the phone doesnt know to take teh device get it into download mode and use odin to wipe out the stuff i installed

The is something you have to ask the thieves.
My phone was definitely flashed after I lost it. The rom is different from the one I had.

Nowadays you really don't have to be a tech wizard to do this stuff. Programming isn't really clicking around and dropping files onto SD card.

Whoa!!
I'm no cop but the OP didn't say how it was stolen but shabby knew that it was taken out your car by breaking the window...
Yes im pointing fingers!! BUT.. Im just kidding .
I actually want to thank shabby for his comment.
I've been wondering if theres an app like the one he mentioned that can be installed and track the phone without being deleted.
I didn't know where to look but now i have a name so i can do my research.
Im not too technical with android but my goal is to have a phone with great security like firewalls blockers and what not.
Yeah cerberus is the best one.
