Hi, my friend has an SGH-i727R, stock ICS 4.04 unrooted and with Fido Canada. He was upgraded to 4.04 about 6 months ago, and there were no problems with the Wifi then.
He came back from his holiday and his phone's wifi had been stuck in the "turning on" position for a long time, and nothing can fix it.
He doesn't have a data plan, and I've tried installing stuff like Advanced Wifi Lock and Wifi Fixer through his SD Card, but it still won't turn on. He's done a factory reset, but it didn't solve the problem.
Is it a hardware problem? I want to ask before I root and install a custom ROM for him.
EDIT: It was on 4.1.2
I would Odin the stock jb firmware and see if it's still an issue. If it is, then it's probably hardware.

Odd thing happened today. I was testing out the EOS cornerstone new rom and was having issues with WiFi so I restored my Stock ICS setup but now I can not enable the WiFi.
The WiFi icon is greyed out on the settings tab and I can not swipe the WiFi to on in the settings app.
Has anyone seen this before? Did the WiFi die?
Just flash the ROM you were using again without any wipe. (Flash the ROM that your backup is base upon)
It seems the backup has the HC version of the wifi. I flashed the other rom again and the wifi is working fine.
Thanks.

Just flash Revolver ROM again, no wipe needed
I installed the AOSP test build of ICS, now I too am having wifi issues. I saw the ROM had it listed that there was a bug with the wifi so I didn't think much of it at first. I then installed Android Revolution but now the wifi still doesn't work.
I accidentally deleted my backup ROM..
Tablet says no MAC address found, and wifi settings app just hangs when trying to turn on.. I've re-flashed numerous times.. I've formatted all the partitions, re-flashed again....
Any ideas?
I had to flash the rom again (EOS cornerstone) and the wifi started working. I just ended up flashing the stock ICS from the asus site to start freh again.
It seems like the backup in CWM does something strange with the wifi driver.
I'm start a new thread here.

I reflashed EOS, wifi works, but i now have a different MAC address than I did before.
Hello everybody,
I rooted and upgraded my T-mobile(US) SGs4G from Froyo to ICS, currently:
model sgh-t959v
firmware 2.3.6
baseband ver t959vuvkj6
kernel ver 2.6.35.7-t959vuvkj6-cl694130
build # gingerbread.vuvkj6
since this upgrade i have 2 bugs:
1. usb(mass storage mode) is not working in my car (read error), worked before OK. it's still working when i connect phone to computer. We got another SGs4g in the family (not rooted, just upgraded to GB), it's stop working in USB mass storage in the car too. Any ideas? could i replace usb driver in ICS or do i need to go back to Froyo?
2. I worked in the building with poor reception of GSM signal, so if phone could not connect to the cell, then even if i go outside later it's still "searching" and could not find signal, so i need to turn phone off/on in order to get signal.
Could it be fixed? again it was OK with Froyo: 5-10 sec and reception re-established.
Thanks in advance.
You don't have ICS. You have Gingerbread. Try a factory reset for your problems.
I did
Thanks, my bad, sure it's not ICS, its GB. And i did HW reset in the begining, do you think it's the number of resets that counts? BTW i did not back up my Froyo, do you know where i can get one?
When did you do the factory reset in relation to your problems? How did you upgrade?
Depending on your answers my recommendation is follow the guide in the second link of my signature. GB is worth having.
I can find you a link for Froyo but it is not as simple to downgrade to Froyo as you might think. You will need to make sure to flash Froyo bootloaders also.
first i did root still with froyo
then updated to GB with keos
did reset, and re-installed all applications.
I did figure out how to "trick" lost connection due to no signal:
turn on flight mode and turn in off. so definitely it's a bug.
still no luck with USB
I know that downgrade to froyo is not easy, and i like GB, this is why i'm asking if there is a way to patch usb driver only
regards
I did some searching around, but apparently no one else has posted any issues with tethering on ICS.
I have my Skyrocket updated to the official ICS Rom released yesterday (I727UCLF6) and rooted, but the settings just FC if I go into the wireless hotspot options. This crash occurred before I rooted the new update as well. Any ideas why this is happening? Anyone else unable to tether?
yes i also problem if i shut down or reset to phone
the wifi not work and need trun off and trun on
Ok so the problem i am having is i am unable to get wifi to work without the phone saying error next to wifi. My One S has the lastest radio and HBOOT 1.06. So i understand that i do not need to flash the boot.img from fastboot, but i still do to make sure that it is flashing ok. That does not fix the problem. I have even used the stock T-MO nanodroid to go back to stock rom and i still flash the boot.img file from fastboot still not wifi. Everything on the phone works fine but wifi. After the phone boots up wifi is already on and it does scan and see networks. When i try to connect to one it doesn't connect, if i toggle wifi off and turn it back on again it gives me a error when turning wifi on. Only thing i am wondering is, i do not have a SIM CARD in the phone right now since i do not have a micro sim right now. Does the phone need a SIM CARD in it for wifi to work. I spent 3 hours last night flashing different roms and boot.imgs trying to get wifi to work. All with errors still. Anything ideas right now would be great.
edit: forgot to add when i flash the boot.img in fastboot i always get a finished with no errors as if the boot.img is flashing fine.
wifi problem
I just pulled my sim from my One s and found i had no problem with the wifi connection. What kind of error is it, do you have any code?
No code. If I do a full wipe the wifi scans for a network sees them but does not connect. Then it will turn off on its own and just say error next to the on and off button. It does it with every rom and kernel combo I have tried. Even going to back to the full stock rom it does it. I know the kernel is flashing since it shows the right kernel under about.

i've encountered the same issue, but only when i flashed an overclocked kernel. and when i flashed the kernel back the error went away. have you tried unrooting?
I was looking for a full stock unrooted rom and but couldn't find anything other then a nanodroid of stock rooted. I was thinking of just flashing the ruu and seeing if that fixes it. Not sure at this point because I have tried every kernel and rom all which do not work so far. I have also formated everything thinking maybe something was left behind no go as well. I know wifi works since I used the phone for a few days before I Dev unlocked it and rooted it. I also setup the phone on wifi with no sim card when I pulled it out of the box at the start. Something happen after the unlock and rooting part. Could updating the hboot help at all.

I fixed it. I flashed the TMO 1.84 RUU and wifi is working again. It updated the HBOOT to 1.09 and everything is stock with working wifi. I am starting all over to see if i can get it working with a rom as well now.
Hello all, it all started on 5.1.1. I flashed a new build of carbon and suddenly it was searching for WiFi constantly and not finding it at all. So I did a clean install of exodus and then cm 12.1. So I went back to stock locked my boot loader on 6.0.1. The WiFi issue still persist. Twrp 2.8.7
1 and radio/modem for mmb29k. So my question is what is going on. Any hope for me or is device done for.
It is possible that the wifi chip is defective. I would try flashing a stock LP build to rule out mm as being the cause.
I had two nexus 5 phones that also suddenly failed to connect to any networks the wifi was stuck at "turning on". I could only solve the problem by swapping in a new motherboard.
Oh that sucks. Thanks for the reply. Will try your suggestion and will look further into this issue.
