Samsung Distorting Benchmarks - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...ively-changing-gpu-frequency-in-certain-apps/
Interesting. This may be why I only get 6800-7500 in Quadrant on AOSP roms, but on Samsung touchwiz roms I get a MUCH higher score.

I just finished reading this thread when I saw this new thread. Sorry

Samsung "Cheats" To Gain Benchmark Performance Edge Over Competition
It is intriguing, but I don't worry to much about benchmarks.

We all already knew this...and its been said many times here in the forums not to trust benchmarks for that exact reason...and samsung isnt the only one doing it...all the manufacturers do it
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2

That does make sense. I remember after I first flashed paranoid android I was worried because it's benchmarks were so low in comparison to stock. If Samsung is doing this then I believe the htc one has to do the same thing considering it's benchmarks are about the same as the s4 running touch wiz.

I too agree that benchmark doesn't mean much to user experience. A custom ROM can mean a whole lot more in term of smoothness

ICS stock Sensation is faster then Galaxy Nexus :D

Everything is stock , no overclocking or anything like that
Is that a surprise? isn't sensation better than Nexus? or am i wrong?
Benchmark tests don't always tell the truth.
Tired of those benchmark noobs.

The Snapdragon S4 based phones disagree
Pikabat I axpected more from you =\ as you can see in the benchmark the nexus have much better CPU (the blue stat) and sensation only have better I/o (the green one) which is obvious why... So no, sensation isn't faster...

first of all 2700 is low
second of all, that quadrant graph has not been updated since they added dual/quad core support
so thats galaxy nexus running 1 core test
check my screenshot for some sensation power, 1512mhz gets 3700 points
was with openSensation btw
My phone just sucks in benchmarks . Quadrant cant get over 3000 mark. Antutu usaly 6800+ on 1.5 ghz. But no lag in programs and in the interface, but seeing this score im thinking something is not ok with it.

Lmao... I have bolth Sensation (my wife's) and the SGS 2.. and yes the pyramid is a good phone. It lacks a good bit in 3D performance ..
I know the 2 devices have the same S3 chip set but Sammy definitely did better implementing it.. Though I tend to not trust quadrant I score over 3200 with no overclock on my SGS 2.. just saying .. not to mention my buddy has a GNex and that shiz is fast...

Its inflation. Quadrant is notorious for this. R/RW speed between the current devicesis pretty much the same, especially when they are all on custom ext4 partitions .. Hence why you can run 4 benchmarks and get 4 different scores .. notice the CPU and graphics numbers don't really flux to much...
Hate to break it to you bro. But the Sensation will never be faster than a GNex or any SGS 2 version. Don't get me wrong I love the device. But it is what it is..

you all realize that quadrant is only good for comparing devices with the same screen resolution, right?
The Gnex is running at a much higher resolution and becuase of that the scores will be lower in Quadrant.
Quadrant runs at the phones native resolution so the gnex has to work harder... I cant believe people still use this as their proof....

S3 and S4 version difference ?

So I was looking up on online stores which sell One S....and nowhere the specify what version it is, S3 or S4. So how do I know online that is the phone is S3 OR S4 before thinking to order it.
If I'm not mistaken, S3 has internal memory of 1.2 GB and S4 has 16GB ?
Thanx in advance

No they both have 16gb. And there is little difference in performance its not even noticeable.
The only thing you should keep in mind the s3 version doesn't have sense 4.1 yet but the s4 version does.

No above post is wrong there is a big difference between the two s3 is is using the older chip (s3 chip) and has been over clocked to 1.7 GHz it is a lot slower compared to the s4 version and quadrant scores vary a lot. Do not get the s3 version Its not worth the money you can get a better phone for the price. However if you can get the s4 version get it because the phone is amazing you can tell which one is which because s4 version has msm8960 processor and is 1.5ghz ... DO NOT GET THE S3 ONE.... There are not even many devs working on it and is a terrible phone

I have S3 version. And tested S4 version too. Despite there is no noticable differantiation about their performance, dont buy S3 version. Because there will be always update issues about S3 version as we seen here, S3 versions are still not updated to 4.0.4 while S4 versions got.

Actually its you mate, you shouldn't look into numbers so much, going through the ui the galaxy nexus with jelly bean runs smother than most phones but yet quadrant is only like 2000..... Numbers mean **** its down to real world performance. If you go on the one x forum you will see a lot of people saying it has lag in areas the one s doesn't yet it has better quadrant. Numbers mean nothing its down to real world and you really cant make an argument for a device you have never used.
I'm getting confused now with varying opinions
and my original question is....how do i know the phone is S3 or S4. Sense 4 and 4.1 is one of them but i cant check it before i buy it even in a store....and the processor is different. Anymore ?

What's your thoughts. Looks kinda not good.

So all the benchmark charts I see people posting up have numbers that blow Mine away. I've briefly read about them but don't really understand what makes one better than the other. So can anyone, someone give me the trade secrets on how to improve this??? Thanks in advance.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Are you on AOSP? It looks like it from your status bar.
Basically Samsung "cheats" benchmarks on touchwiz ROMs. So on a TW ROM I'll score around 6k but on AOSP I'll get around 4-5k depending on overclock and whatnot.
Actual performance wise AOSP seems faster.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Yea I'm on AOSP. So are my numbers decent? And are there any ways to improve?. Phone doesn't seem slow but I feel it can be a bit faster. How can I achieve that? Thanks
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Quadrant doesn't mean anything. Performance should be based on how the phone reacts to daily use and not an app.
If you want the score to increase, overclock the kernel. Know that this is bad on the battery and will cause premature failure of you stress the processor too much.
Seriously, benchmarks mean nothing. I had a DNA and the benchmarks were insane but the phone didn't feel as "fast" as the numbers were saying.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
So As long as there aren't any crippling bugs and what I use daily is operable I shouldn't worry about benchmarks? I'll take that and roll with it. And I appreciate the help

The latest stock version!
No idea what is latest. And as far as I know from reports, it seems the Scandinavian xxuame2 is less laggy than others (that's my current one btw) and that some areas has a different version as it's latest version.
See my confusion =) ?

I compared i9505 and HTC One side by side, and One was smoother. I guess SGS4 doesnt have well optimized software yet.
Perhaps. Or the sw you have isn't the best version they've made so far. As mentioned, it differs from region to region it seems.
Can't say I feel a huge difference between my 920 snd my s4 in terms of smoothness. And 920 is pretty damn smooth.
The again it could be my fw contra yours that makes the difference.
So basically I think it's hard to compare one to s4 since there's several totally different "latest sw" on the market. Probably for both phones.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium
The HTC One is noticeably smoother than the S4, no doubt.
Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk 2
In the age old battle of HTC vs Samsung I can almost guarantee history will repeat. Samsung always comes out on top with better hardware, firmware, updates ect.. So yeah, maybe a stock ONE is slightly smoother than a stock S4 but give developers some time we'll see who takes prize.

Just sold my HTC One device and kept my 9500, I thought the HTC One was a pretty boring device...
I have done the comparisons myself for the sake of what to keep, and all of them reviews and comparisons and not real, what is real is what I like not what others show me. Lags and whatever do not bother if I have to give up 50% of the value add features I get with the S4.
Big regrets to spend the money on the HTC One....
Thanks

I personally think that samsung went with 4.2.2 which is buggy and slight laggy by itself. They also had less time to optimize the firmware. I have a lot of hopes that the s4 firmware will be optimized as much as the htc one in terms of performance.
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda premium
Might be something off with the 9500 and it's sw?
Not sure what the bugs in 4.2.2 are, haven't encountered any so far that I've noticed.
Maybe I got lucky with having my fw or maybe I'm just oblivious. I don't know.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium
The multi tasking on the HTC One seemed faster because the SGS4 has the slow stock multi tasking animation which was introduced in 4.2.2.
Turn off all animations in developer options and see which is faster
Many are saying that the S4 IS HAVING SOFTWARE ISSUES BUT ALSO see that htc one is running 4.1.2 and maybe in 4.2.2 it will be more better!!
In my case here.. I asked my self what exactly do I want in a phone.. Build quality over functionality? Boom sound over 5inches screen? In the s4 I really got functionality while d one looks like a fast HTC X.. In terms of pixels, u can't differentiate cos anything over 400ppi is awesome. I hardly listen to music with the outer speakers so boom sound is not my thing. With the Samsung s4 I'm never bored. Games performance and bench marks kills the one. It's all about individual choice.

Wrong, its much better implemented then flipboard could ever be.
S4 for me:
5 vs 4.7 on the same candy bar size, while being lighter.
When I decided there was no One Google version.
Having handled both for a while the One lost its "better quality" moniker. I don't like the feeling of carrying a metallic object in my pocket. It is nice to look at, but felt like a foreign object even holding it. And by the way the One is not that "premium" of a construction. Polished aluminum is not as nice as polished stainless steel (as seen on expensive watches)
Bottom line if the one was last year's flagship, it would have been an excellent choice. Now the s4 is simply better.

Ah but the build quality of the One is far worse than the quality of the s4. Thats why I thought you meant the s4 was the build quality and the One the functionality.
Harder to fix when damaged.
More prone to disfigurement upon impact.

First off, get your facts straight. Touchwiz isn't a launcher, it's a framework, a UI if you will. It's more than a pesky easily-replaced launcher.
And it's a matter of personal preference. Some like the Touchwiz UI and some don't. I tend to favor the cleanliness, sleekness, smoothness and intuitiveness of a good aosp rom.

You know what's great? We don't need to have these debates any more. Like TW? Leave your device alone. Like AOSP(ish), buy a GE device or flash the GE ROM. Apex is the best

I will root if my carrier decides to block tethering on the phone.
I will root to remove apps that came with the phone, but I do not want.
I will root to backup all the settings and data on my phone that I normally cant backup if I did not root.
I will root if I want to use a modified kernel to give me better battery life.
I will root to install call recording features that dont come with the phone.
Rooting is much more than just changing the UI... you are also able to change the nuts and bolts of the system to make it work the way you want because sometimes the carrier or samsung itself wont make things the way you like.

Samsung sold 20mil because it's fan base is similar to apple's, they target the same type of consumers. The majority of those who bought an s4 did it for the wrong reasons (there are always exceptions of course). Having the latest galaxy flagship is nearly equal to having the latest iphone nowadays, according to some people's "social standards".
Despite the fact that samsung phone's quality is questionable, sudden death on s3 and note (actually had it on my s3, and believe me it was a really frustrating experience), burn in amoled displays (had it on my galaxy nexus), smearing on s4, and many other problems these phones usually have. of course not to forget samsung's ability to produce lag in a 1.9ghz quad/2gb ram hardware and cheap build quality.. But still these phones sell, just shows you that with good marketing and publicity you can sell anything.

I think everyone should just get a Note 2. Now that is one solid tight phone. Haven't been this satisfied with a phone since chocolate dipped macarons. Great battery life, solid build etc.
I cant believe i'd ever say this, but I was really put off by the S4 on paper, and even more so after playing with it for a while. So much lag everywhere etc.
Troll?
You're asking "why root?" on a site dedicated to development and customization, usually via rooting.
"not rooted or on a rom" then how does the phone work without a rom...?
