Android 4.3 is expected to be announced at Google's special event today (7/24/13). I'll update with details as they're announced.
JB 4.3 Features
-Multi-User with Restricted profiles - restrict apps and DLC on a per-user basis
-OpenGl ES 3.0 support
-DRM APIs (1080p Netflix support)
-New Gapps layouts (optimised for new Nexus 7 res, which happens to match our own 1920x1200)
-New Chrome/Maps/Hangouts features (which I can't imagine are locked to 4.3)
-Play store tablet app discovery enhancements (tablet filter, dedicated games app, etc.)
Let's talk about the update in relation to the TF700.
What features are you hoping for?
Is this device still relevant enough for Asus to update?
What features can be ported to 4.2 without a full 4.3 ROM (a la the 4.2 keyboard into 4.1)?
Post your thoughts, my lovelies.
EDIT: My thoughts-
The biggest news here seems to be OpenGL ES 3.0. Everything else sounds fairly independent from the framework. I'm sure there are optimizations under the hood, but nothing mindblowing is apparent based on the announcement.
the new graphics processing seems like it will help with smoothness and efficiency, early reports are suggesting battery improvements to, that cant hurt anyone XD

OpenGL 3.0 is only going to help apps and devices that support it. This will not impact system smoothness directly.
Maybe someone who knows more about this can comment, but I was under the impression that it's a moot point for us anyway, even in games. Tegra 4 is not 3.0 compliant, nevermind Tegra 3. I'm not sure whether that means 3.0 elements cannot be rendered, but our SoC is certainly not optimized for it at the very least.
I've read similar things about smoothness and battery, but you have to remember that those leaks were from Nexus (and Nexus Experience) hardware. We can hope those improvements will trickle down to us, but it's impossible to tell whether the benefit observed was framework level or driver level.
http://developer.android.com/about/versions/jelly-bean.html i meant the other rendering changes, as seen here. i too am not sure what 3.0 will do for us.
I have read somewhere that people were reporting better performance and battery life with Android 4.3 on the Nexus 4. We may not get all the benefits of Android 4.3, but overall performance should have some improvements, which is the most important thing to me. We now have multi-threaded hardware-accelerated 2D renderer, apart from other optimizations that Google didn't mention. Overall, as Android is now more or less a mature platform, I am expecting updates that enhance performance from now on, which is a good thing because having lags on quad-core devices in 2013 is unacceptable. The only feature that I am dying to see on Android tablets is something like Samsung's multi windows or Cornerstone.

do you guys think this (the new Nexus 7 res) might cause more games getting compatible with our Infinity in the near future?

Yeah, my bad on that one. At that point I had only seen the keynote. They didn't mention the 2d rendering changes. With an optimized ROM we should see some UI improvements.

I already put it in CROMi-X and it works fine Also the new ROBOTO font works as well as some live wallpapers.

Anybody else notice this bit from the above link?
Restrict Setuid from Android Apps
The /system partition is now mounted nosuid for zygote-spawned processes, preventing Android applications from executing setuid programs. This reduces root attack surface and likelihood of potential security vulnerabilities.

Seems like this would effectively kill superuser programs that have a GUI component. Of course it might just be as simple as remounting the partition without that option to work around it.

It will kill the current implementation of superuser as each app would not be able to elevate to root, but each of the main superuser apps are currently in the process of changing how the superuser process works. (one cannot just remount /system since this is at the per app level) Both apps’ developers are going the route of launching a daemon during initialization from a thread that still has all the required permissions. This will then always run in the background and service the apps as a pass through, though this may require some modifications from some apps that utilize superuser.
This daemon method was already needed prior to the change that set nosuid on /system due to the fact that apps were already being limited in other ways due to other recent changes. You may have seen this if you tried to mount a file system as r/w in one app but it still appeared ro in another.

Were you able to get the camera to work? From what I can tell the HAL methods have changed in 4.3 and it causes mediaserver to die when launching the camera app. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious.

Anyone have any thoughts on whether or not the JB update helped with some of the IO issues of if JB uses a different / better disk scheduling method?
What is everyone using and what's recommended (post JB update)

It feels faster, but I have no benchmarks (as I do not believe in simple numbers as compared to user experience). Only the first release used noop as a scheduler, and the first update changed it to cfq (which still is the default on JB stock). It depends a lot on your specific usage pattern (and file transfer size), so I'd recommend changing it around for a bit and just get a feel for which one is performing better in your specific case. You can change it back at any time, so it carries no risk.

I believe both CM10 and AOKP ROMs -- which I was testing -- allow it out of the box (somewhere under Device Settings or in the ROM Control part). I'll try and think of some apps that could do this for you -- gotta split, off to work. ; )
EDIT: Forgot to mention I played around with in CM10/AOKP, but I did not notice a significant change in anything. Takes a bit more testing, though, but I'm back on CleanROM 2.0 for today -- the physical keyboard's shortcut keys are broken on CM10/AOKP, which is supremely annoying during my train commute. : )

Yea I was scared to unlock when I was on ICS (the failure rate on these things is so high and I didn't want to void warranty) but now that I've upgraded to JB I definitely want to but now I'm waiting for an unlock tool from ASUS That supports JB.
I need a way to tinker from stock - This isn't something that's like in build.prop is it?

Many ppl here is still using the ICS unlock tool and it works perfectly on JB.
I probably didn't take enough hard data for it to be a definitive statement but, by recollection, my Quadrant I/O scores improved by 15 to 20% from ICS to JB. Definitely significant enough to notice.
I just bought this device as a toy and a test as a computer tablet. I found it to be slow and buggy. I do notice that in browsing heavy pages like the real facebook page it IS faster than my Galaxy Note 1 but in almost everything else, the Note is faster and snappier. I have disabled lots of apps, resett it, no change. So my question, I guess this one is really worth rooting and installing a good rom Im used to the Cyanogen to my phones, is Cyanogen working good for this tablet?
Im still marveled by the quality of the screen, I dont think I ever have seen such a good screen! If I just now could get it working somewhat near as good as my Note 1 I will be a happy panda
Thanx in advance peeps
My experience is that it is NOT slow and buggy.
I could compare it with an iPad3 last week and I think they are very close.
You can't compare it with a note because due to the much higher resolution the gpu has to do so much more computing. That is why the nexus7 is faster than the tf700 due to it's smaller screen AND resolution

I'm on stock rom with browser2ram and force2gpu enabled. My table is very fast. Just remember before you flash a new rom, just do factory reset(data wipe 3 times). Also root is good (allow you to install rooted app like Titinium backup, SetcPU etc..), but don't unlock unless absolutely necessary (void your warranty), or you have time or like to play with custom rom.
Ok, sounds like I will root it then and try to tweak it, Im not satisfied with the speed with it sofar. Its seems stable now after I resetted it, before the reset, it crasched 2-10 times a day. My idea was that since the GPU and CPU is older in the Note, The Tegra 3 would be able to handle the FullHD resolution but it doesnt seem to .. I definatly want a ROM without the garbage crap
I plan to use it to write alot on, can you recommend a good office app? Or a browser that google docs work good with
Is games running good for you?? The new demanding ones I tried before resetting was really slow and laggy.
Thanx for the replys, I hope I get this baby running smoother

Yes, all games, videos, pictures, and documents and apps are function normally. There are 3 most popular office apps:
1. Documents to go (this can view google docs also. Paid version only)
2. Kingsoft office
3. Polaris office (currently polaris has a bug with fonts).
My stock browser can view google docs fine. I think stock browser is the best in my opinion (have tried boat, chrome, mozilla etc...)

The Infinity's performance is not CPU bound and is not due to the higher res. It's I/O limited. The CPU is plenty fast enough. As soon as the memory config requires the system to start hitting the /sdcard memory, the system will be subject to random stuttering/pausing because the sdcard memory is the cheapest, slowest, crappiest flash RAM ASUS could find.
This is why stuff like browser2ram is seen as a huge boost for people that do a lot of browsing and it is also why the stuttering varies from user to user/session to session since the RAM situation in the system varies from config to config and moment to moment during use. Some users who's config has a lot of free DRAM and do not frequently use stuff that hits the sdcard partition hard, see almost no performance issues with the tablet.

I own both the Infinity and the Acer a700 and after the a700 got JB earlier today, I will say that the Infinity lags more than the a700 (and I was very happy with the Infinity). Colour me shocked.
The only time I really ever experience any lag or sluggishness is when browsing. I will be rooting once there is a method discovered for Jelly Bean on the Infinity. I'd really like to give browser2ram a shot. I've heard it does wonders for browsing.

Hi,
Saw this on reddit this morning, as no one's posted it yet I'd just like to offer it up as another potential lag-fixer.
The source of the problem is that internal storage is not properly TRIMmed when needed. You can find lots of information on XDA - http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1971852 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1929021 for example. It is also well-known fact that running fstrim Linux tool from time to time fixes the issue until internal memory runs out of free blocks. Other solutions like mounting with -discard or disabling fsync may be dangerous.
LagFix is a user-friendly implementation of fstrim utility. It allows you to select which partitions to trim (you should leave defaults unless you know what you are doing) and run the process easily.
Please note that fstrim output depends on kernel and device. It works fine unless you see errors. You might see big amounts of bytes, zero amount or repeating amount. All are fine! Read fstrim manual to understand why all these outputs are valid.
It is also advised to reboot your device after the TRIM process so that kernel could reinitialize block data.
App is free and is available in Play Market. Current version is 1.0.
P.S. If your ROM mounts /data with -discard then this app is NOT needed! Mounting with -discard causes brickbug on some devices, so I DO NOT advise using -discard.

I applied it on my rooted, locked tf700 and, well, nothing bad happened. I am on the .25 update, which I feel made overall app-opening a little smoother, so I can't tell if this makes any noticeable difference, but it certainly doesn't seem slower after applying it. The dev says that if you run androbench after applying the fix i/o read should be higher, if anyone could run a few benchmarks of before/after it would be appreciated! I've never really placed much faith in benchmarks so didn't bother doing it myself.
Hope this benefits someone!

I downloaded and installed it. Ran it, rebooted. It did trim, but the jury is still out on whether this actually helps or not. It's too freshly booted to really judge the effects properly, so I'll have it settle in and report back.
It didn't break my 700 -- that's a good thing to start with.

Yeah, I was reluctant to be the first one to try it on an infinity... But it worked out for the better, I think. Now I don't know if the .25 jb update or this is to thank for the better performance. It should hope up till the 4.2 update at least! Quite pleased with the .25 update

Just tried it. Could be my imagination, but my tablet seems snappier.
I am not convinced that it will have any effect: TF700's Hynix eNAND flash is eMMC 4.41 compliant, which does not have DISCARD command, the equivalent of SATA's TRIM command. The DISCARD command is supported in eMMC 4.51 compliant flash but I don't know if the Kingston flash in Nexus 7 is eMMC 4.51 compliant. Even if it does TRIM the TF700, probably it will have little effect if you have alot of free space left as it does not affect the garbage collection significantly. One would hope that TRIM should already be done dynamically within the file management software as it would reduce write amplification factor, hence improve write speed performance?

According to the spec, eMMC 4.41 supports TRIM - what's the difference between TRIM and DISCARD?
I read that eMMC 4.41 also supports "background operation" and "high priority interrupt" - these sound much more interesting related to lag than TRIM. Do you have any idea if these features are already used in the TF700's Linux kernel (or even at all in any kernel)?
faq in op link said:
Which devices are affected?
It is known by now, that Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and HTC One X need regular trimming. It is also believed that all pre-ICS devices used different memory and they do NOT need it nor support it. Pre-ICS support will be dropped in version 1.2. Other 4.0+ devices? Well, test it! And report if it really helps - your device will be added to the list.
How to properly test it?
Use AndroBench app before using LagFix and after. You only need micro test. Look for Sequential Write values. Reading from memory is NOT affected, because reading does not involve writting and only writting triggers search party for free memory blocks.

I think I'll give this a try. I have some hefty typing lag. I thought one of the first updates had gotten rid of it, but it came back, it was just temporarily relieved by the fresh reboot then. If it does help, it'll probably be a month before I confirm anything, just to avoid giving/having false hope . Thanks for posting op hope it works.
Edit, sorry, just noticed OP already mentioned androbench.
Edit 2: Saw no change in my androbench write speed. Sequential write was something over 5MB/s, random write was .15MB/s both before and after running it, and again after rebooting. lagfix claimed to have trimmed successfully. If anything, it felt more laggy for a while after running it. I'm an OS update or two behind FWIW, just installed Jelly Bean a month or so ago. I like to let everyone else test the updates before I install them. I'll probably run another bench this evening.
fsTRIM = AWESOME fix - on CROMI, OCed kernel, fsync disabled
I just download the fsTRIM app and it worked with CROMI, OCed kernel, and fsync disabled. Will seem laggy right after runnng it, just reboot as soon as you do and things will be deffinitely running smoother and slightly faster now. Noticing less keyboard latency even as I type this out. I suggest trying it out.
UPDATE - Seriously try this **** out. Keyboard typing is radically smoother in browser, evernote, and google drive. Less latency between multi touch gestures ive set up in GMD Gesture Control as well. App opening is still instantaneous. Loading big web pages is definitely quicker. Will time boot and other things and update again soon.
Update - Opening large files and youtube is faster. large pdfs load faster. everything is really....snappy, and.....smooth.....best of both worlds. things were already pretty snappy and smooth with CROMI, didnt think they could get better but it has. I time everything as well to compare. I could barely time it after this fix as everything is basically instantaneous. Havent tried writing/moving large files on internal storage yet, will test soon, this is distracting me from my homework too much lol.
It works for me I can now download files and move them without having my tablet unusable until it's done.

You posted the same content in two other thread sof you own making, and in this one. One helluva way to get to 2000 posts without interjecting anything actually useful. Neitehr is this post, I will mention myself, but please keep a lower profile next time.
So far I haven't noticed any difference at all. I'll give it the rest of the day and if I don't feel there is any change I'll just uninstall.

Do you have any benchmarks?

I used to play with benchmarks, trying out Hunds' & _that's various kernels. But, as most people say, benchmarks don't matter in the long run.
I used to match some of the same benchmarks posted in those threads, but things would still feel slugglish over time or during transitions.
I don't want to wait a few seconds for my keyboard to pop up every time, of for me to switch back to the home screen.
So for me, I want a tablet (and phone) that I don't have to reboot every day. I want it to wake up instantly. Keyboard pop up instantly. Multitask smoothly.
CM11 & Omni seem to do that, while Cromi-X seems to lag no matter that I try or whatever sbdags & co do to tweak the hell out of 4.2.x. Sure, a the IO lag has a lot to do with it, and if I'm downloading a big file or have something installing in the background I will always have lag with this tablet.
But, for now, I'm on Omni and pretty happy. If not, I'd say CM11 is very smooth too.

So it's just me who finds omni rom extremely laggy? What kernel and mods and stuff are you using???

I have found all the cm11 based ROMs very laggy so far. They don't seem to be optimised for the tf700t yet. Maybe need a bit more time?

I've made a lot of improvements in CROMi-X 5.3 to combat the lag when something is using the disk in the background. It's a lot better now than it was on the last few versions.
There's never going to be a definite answer on this. How do you define "lag"?
What are you looking for in your rom?
How do you use your tablet?
You just have to try them all and decide for yourself...
I'm always like: ???????????? when someone reports lag on CROMi-X. I just don't get it, because I don't have it.....
I tried CM 10.2 and CM 11 on this tablet and I found them to be slower and (to me more importantly) a hell of a lot buggier than CROMi-X!
But again: I guess not only beauty but also lag and performance is in the eye of the beholder....

@sbdags did an amazing job with 4.2. So did hunds and _that. No disrespect. Just after running 4.2 for a long time, I'd like to run something newer as long as it's responsive. I don't care about benchmarks as I said before.
I'm hoping sbdags have the chance to do the same with 4.3 or 4.4 if Asus releases it for the 700, or 701 and then back port to the 700.

Newer and frankenrom'd doesn't translate into "better" IMHO.. But everybody rolls differently...
sbdags released his beta for the TF701 on 4.3 already. There won't be much porting back though - Tegra4 framework is just too different. But I bet the roms for the Tf701 will be even better because he has so much experience with tweaking the Asus roms

Have you watched the Google's 2012 I/O keynote where Google introduced Android 4.1 and Project Butter? Google has clearly defined what they perceive as lag in Android as situations where the UI's frame rate drops below 60 fps and you can clearly see stutter in animation, which is why Google also introduced Systrace to profile app performance. If the frame rate drops significantly below 60 fps (which I always encounter in the stock app drawer), you will see things like transition effect stutters when swiping between pages or the laggy fly-in effect when you open the app drawer. If you have a Nexus 10 to compare, the difference in terms of frame rate is so apparent that it is almost impossible not to notice. If someone had a high-end camera that can capture 60 fps or 120fps videos like the one Google used to demo Android 4.1, we could easily capture all these instances of lags on videos and had a more scientific discussion. To me, the Nexus 10 is the gold standard of 10-inch tablet performance and I have yet to see another non-Nexus 10-inch tablet (besides the iPad, if I may) that deliver the same level of performance, regardless of ROMs being used.
Moreover, not to discount the work that the xda community has put into improving performance, there are simply too many ways that you can make an Android device drop frames here and there. Even powerful devices like the Note 3 can fail to deliver constant 60 fps UI frame rate. I'm sure with the right combination of widgets and apps, you can also make the Nexus 10 stutter. Or simply, you can just fill up 90% of the internal storage and watch how the performance degrades. To be honest, it is much harder to believe that there is no lag at all, regardless of devices and ROMs that you use. Even Google said that Project Butter is not perfect and still an ongoing effort.
Lastly, workload can also dramatically affect performance and make instances of lags more noticeable, so your usage pattern is a factor. Personally, even on CROMI-X, my tablet could become really laggy if I used it for my work like the other day, even with only 3 apps in my recent apps list: Adobe Reader to read a big pdf file (a 100-page annual report of a company, with a lot of text and images), the stock Browser to research relevant information with around 10 tabs, one being facebook desktop site (seriously, the facebook desktop site is really terrible on Android), Merriam Webster Dictionary app to look up certain words, all in landscape mode. In that scenario, my tf700 performed just like a big slide show.
+1 all the way.
BUT reg the Nexus: No external storage - no deal. For me......

I am in the same boat as you, which is why I am very excited to see more of those Google Play Edition devices. I highly doubt that there will ever be a Google Play Edition Transformer tablet, but it would be fantastic to have one.
CMB
I switched from CROMi-X to CMB (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2577165) a couple of days ago and I am really happy with it.
@lj50036 has done a great job and so far I haven't had any issues/sluggishness although it is based off CM11. The dock works like a charm as well
The only thing that did not work was being able to use ART on CMB for me.
Hey everyone!
I've got an Honor 8S in the UK (2GB variant) for a while now and can't do anything but observe how bad this device is with it's stock rom, which is currently rolling an EMUI 9.1 with Android 9.
System and UI by default uses ~1GB RAM; apps struggle to load / scroll all the time with major stutters and lags; multi-tasking is impossible as the system kills your idle apps whatever you do in battery / performance settings - Hell, I just had google maps opened the other day, accidentally touched the home button, then went back to maps, and it completely reloaded, not to talk about Facebook or some "heavier" apps; Even setting phone orientation requires approx. 5-10 seconds time-by-time to complete.
Can anyone suggest a solution for this kind of issue? I don't really have experience installing custom roms, and not sure if that could help in the first place, then again as a newly purchased device I don't know whether or not this could void my warranty.
Any opinions and suggestions are welcome! Thank you very much!

What do you expect when running 9.1 on a device with only 1GB of RAM. That's what happens when you run a newer ROM on a device that has limited hardware. Hardware limited devices can't handle newer ROMs, they just don't have the hardware to handle it without lagging.

Obviously. So Huawei should address the issue, which I really believe they won't for being preoccupied with flagship devices. I just don't understand why they push the new ROM and all updates on entry- and mid-level device, if they damn well know it's unmanageable; and in my case, we're talking about a current year's summer released phone. A thing I know for sure is that I'm departing myself further away from Huawei/Honor.
So addressing the issue, would a custom ROM work out, or should I just try living with it as is?

You can try rooting and modifying the stock software to optimize it or you can try a custom ROM, but even the newer custom ROMs won't be any more efficient. All ROMs from lollipop to now are too much for devices with 1GB RAM.

it's 2 GBs, 1 GB is actually the remaining RAM as system and UI reserve ~1GB

Ah, I see, that should be enough for custom ROMs depending on how skilled the developer is, the more skilled, the more likely their ROM will be optimized for functionality.
