The smartphone of the future - how should it look like? - General Topics

From my early years I was trying to create the ideal design of a phone. But then Steve Jobs ruined all my illusions with totally changing the path evolution of smartphones. But you can't stop the progress, and the smartphone of the future must blow up our minds as much as iPhone did. But how must it look and which functions must it be capable of?

These points with me :
1. Let's forgot the battery
2. Update hardware with OTA
3. No Chinese pirated app stores ...

IPhone really was a PDA without a pen - but if it is so easy figure out the usability of such a product why nobody did?
And look here: there are a few models with pen on the market and the most - without. I think this is the confirmation of my words. (Nevertheless, I like Android more then iPhone)

Nobody did it because the touch screens weren't very good at registering fingers at the time, and the PDA was for the professional user to keep notes, not the general population.
Apple improved the screen to register fingertips (which it still didn't always do very well. You couldn't write on it for sh*t, and half the time it didn't register a touch.), but a single step improvement is by no means mindblowing. There were plenty of computer displays that already used tip-touchscreens; you found them in shops, factories... Apple just made the screen smaller.
What was mindblowing about Apple's launch of the iPhone was their exceptional marketing strategy. As much as I dislike their products (and their sheer lack of service), I have nothing but respect for their marketing team.
Yes, you weren't spamming. But making posts for the sake of getting posts, even if they're useful, is frowned upon; you're supposed to get your first 10 posts by helping others.
I also very much like the idea of foldable displays, but only if we can get them truly foldable. Imagine, your entire computer on a flexible sheet of plastic? You could stick it in your wallet, and then fold it out to 22"! I would so love that. With the contact lenses, of course (have you seen Continuum? think of the contact lenses like the CMR in that.. )

I don't understand why people are obsessed with flexible screens? What I want is to reduce the input delay from 100ms to 10ms.

Nokia showed a video of a bracelet phone years ago, then the chatter seemed to just die.

A screen that may be able to flex does not mean it would be able to fold nor will the other components such as the battery, motherboard or case.

the future? evolution of current architecture. from battery to processor.
do you guys remember when many of us laugh on iPhone 5 because it's getting taller. but now? other vendors do the same.

We're talking about the future; nobody specified an era.
Remember how massive the old computers were? You needed a truck to house 100KB. Hard to imagine we can stuff 128GB into a thumb-sized piece of plastic when you look back at that. They can store TB's on plastic tape.
And when Quantum Computing finally kicks off, we'll stop thinking about physical size altogether, because we'll be talking about nano technology.

got laughed at because the only thing changing with it was an extra row of icons.
No-one have followed suit, if Android manufacturers are changing the ratio from 16:9 that's to compensate for on-screen buttons.

Kingston have fitted 1TB onto a thumb drive, well to be fair it's about a double thumb drive.
Quantum computing is a far way away though and it's very unclear what it'll do for personal computing. It'll be king for decryption and similar, if it can be utilized for graphics we'll see pretty much unlimited graphics where software will be the bottleneck. (Imagine coding a graphic engine for a quantum computer). Exciting stuff though.

oh okay orb no problem, xda is a win mob fan site (Me too ) but same time there are some apple fan boys here. This might be useful for them ha ha
It is relevant as most users here are used to phone hardware that is far more advanced than the iPhone.
Not anymore. Yes iPhone OS still sucks and of course there is no hardware keyboard, but the new phones display alone is enough to make me a little jealous. 960x640 makes the 800x480 screen on my Rhodium feel like QVGA. When will WE get display's like this? WinMo obviously never will, and WP7 only supports up to 800x480.
I assume Android could support this resolution, but when? Imagine the HD2's 4.3" display at 960x640! LCD pr0n it would be. HTC needs to get on this quickly.
Wow impressive, Video chat over wi-fi and the app which enables this is FaceTime. Cool.
video chat and the book apps is just bs. On the other hand - the screen, the camera (+LED flash), the processor, and the antenna seem like good innovations. Hate to say it, but... Well done, Apple.

You are right mate
I really hate to sound even a tiny bit pro Apple but what exactly about this new iPhone is fail? Besides the screen size it meets or bests the HD2 in the hardware department. The 960x640 resolution is well beyond anything HTC has produced (or plans to?); considering one of the main perks of our WinMo and Android phones has been the high resolution screens this point alone is pretty important.
Imagine Android hacked onto this new iPhone. Might make it arguably the best non-hardware-keyboard phone out there currently.
Hardware keyboard is still a requirement for me so it is an obvious no go. HTC has some catching up to do now, I do hope they soon announce a new Android phone with as high of a greater a resolution (and screen size, obviously) than the new iPhone.
I agree with MooGoo, further what i have heard is this new iPhone 4G has only 256 MB Ram and dont know how they though that they are going to do multitasking with that?? Either the Phone will slow down or battery power leak or can't open as many application as on win mob. But who knows may be they have done something innovative for that too.
Hardware seems nice. Software is disappointing though, I was expecting them to more towards the cloud a bit more and maybe cut that iTunes leash.

Smartphone Design

I know that most people that get smartphones don't usually put design at the top of their list, but... Why are smartphones beginning to look alike? I know that I am probably not the only one that notices this, but shouldn't companies do something innovative with the design of smartphones? For the most part, nearly every smartphone looks like a rectangle with curved edges.
lol and what you had in mind man? Thats like reinventing the wheel, but hey they can improve the design but I am sure it will remain similar as alot of research went in to it. Far as the curved edge goes specially in NS its to much I want my device flat lol in this case I hate to say as iPhone is best example.
iPhone 4 shell and LG Optimus 2X hardware with 4.5" display would be my dream device ill never upgrade it. Dell Steak well thats another matter but hey never watched StarTrek? ever saw those assignment pads looks like small tablets? lol
A few things are being done to change phone design a bit, but right now I think most are either very niche because of bad insides to match, or just a design/prototype for now. Most still use the same rectangle I think, but change a lot in the basic design
This one seems like a great idea, If it could be expanded upon it could be turned into a proper book-style thing for ebooks

Maybe some small changes, not major, but distinctive enough to make them not boring. The myTouch 4g and the Sony Xperia Arc are distinctive enough in my opinion. Even the Incredible does something different with it's rather odd battery door (I still don't get what HTC was thinking).
From a distance, you can't really tell the difference between the HTC EVO, HTC Desire HD, and HTC Thunderbolt. Same goes with the Samsung Focus, Nexus S, Vibrant, Fasinate, Epic (without revealing keyboard obviously) along with some of their newer phones. Most of the dual core phones look the same as well.
Oh and a white phone would be nice even though I prefer black.
For tablets, there is not much to be done. Unless of course, the Microsoft Courier comes to life.

I like the idea of a three screen smartphone, oh and changing the led color reminds me of Alienware.
They also have the Backflip, the Charm and the Droid Pro. Yet, some of the Motorola phones aren't as creative in terms of design.
Do any of you remember seeing the Nokia N90 for the first time? Lots of companies want to innovate, but probably worry about loss of profits it the design is bad.
If you want to see "innovation," you can check out shanzai.com and check out their selection of phones. It is basically a website that shows fake/copied versions of current phones avaliable in the world (usually from China). The "innovation" part being some of the designs may make you think WTF.

I've thought that myself before, but it wouldn't work too well around the front because the black works as a great contrast to make the screen look better. I think that's why iPhone has white only on the back

A white BlackBerry Bold does look a little weird. Although, the European Hero/HTC Legend does look nice. Maybe if buttonless phones are invented, we might see more white phones.
I would love to have more for options; unless im missing something, it is just s different color platic right? I can understand that it would complicate production of the phone and all, but I would love some color variants.
Hell, they could even sell one phone as is and charge to have the plates swapped out at official carrier stores; sort of like getting parts of an iphone fixed at an apple store.

Like you I would like to be able to choose between different colors but it's certainly more expensive to produce different colors than only one as you have to launch different batch campaigns while you launch only one if you stick to one color.
But I'm not sure this is the only reason manufacturers stick to classical colors (black or grey). I think that most people prefer a classical color and green, red, pink colors would sell not as good as black.
Another design: have you seen the HTC Tube concept? It's really gorgeous.
Well, like you said, they can only do so much you know? But you also have to remember that theyre trying to sell a phone, and that means speaking to as many different types of people as possible. This results in somewhat limited design because they cant stray too far from.... well black; how many adults want a colorful phone? But thats just taking something like color into account.
I don't know what other guys think about it, but for me I only concentrate on smartphone's functions.
I thinks smartphone is starting like NB, similar design with similar hw, except the Logo;-)

It would be nice if manufacturers added some customisation options into the phones they sell. Being able to have an engraving done when ordering a Nexus One from Google was a nice touch.
Perhaps more colour schemes and custom designed or patterned rear covers etc to help individualise our devices and set them apart.

lmao, apparently according to the many many rumours, the new iphone is meant to have an elongated home button but Samsung beat them to the punch with the new Galaxy SII LTE HD. A screen resolution of 316ppi and resolution of 1280x720 (apple says 300ppi is human eye limit, so technically its a retina display without the proprietary nametag )
Looks like Apple woke up the BFG. If Samsung can market their new phones right, Apple has a lot to worry about. Also since Apple havent released specs of their upcoming phone Samsung might be able to sue for copying the elongated home button if that is the case with the iphone 5.

That's because Apple is better at marketing. While Samsung uses technical terms like 1.5GHz dual core processor, super AMOLED screen, etc., Apple uses gimmicky terms like facetime(video calling), retina display(high resolution screen), iMessage(Whatsapp rip off), etc. Non-technical people will fall for Apple's gimmicks. Unfortunately, 90% of consumers are non-technical.

i dunno why they banned samsung galaxy tab 10.1 in germany. its a copy of ipad ? really ?. there is no similarity. the screen in galaxy tab is bigger and longer. there's no physical button. the speakers and volume rockers are placed at different places. the camera is better. its lighter and slimmer. the only thing thats same is the colour and the charging port. and thats because charging through micro usb takes too long. so all tablets are using that now. stupid apple. they're all apples

I think Samsung is quite clever since the more products apple sell the more profit Samsung would gain too. The market demand different kinds of parties, some in charge of the tech and making products, the other in charge of decorating products and pleasing customers. However, we all know the one with real tech/ability would enjoy the lasting success.

My Nexus 6 concept - What do you think?

Hi,
I created a little concept about the successor of the Nexus 5. Maybe its called Nexus 6 or Nexus 5 (2014).
Rumors say that it will have a 5.5" display so I decided to build this in my concept. Its just a 2D render, not a 3D or something.
I were really amazed that this 5.5" display fits in a body which is just a few millimeters larger than the one of the Nexus 5. I compared the two.
So final question: What do you think about my concept?

Perhaps making the device thicker by a mm or two would prevent the random touches you mention.
Would also mean a larger (higher capacity) battery could be installed.
Though the almost bezel-less design, when used with a protective case/bumper may cause issues with screen edge touches.
k-c
Nice to hear your opinions
For those bezels they might have to move the buttons to the back ala LG G2/3. I like it though.
The bezel is too small, and the fact that the bottom has a different shape to the top really annoys me. Like the speaker grille though.
No bezel barely will mean bigger cases would be overlapping the screen space. Not good. For marks, or using pie or sidebars.
I like it! Never did care for Bezels...they sux's!
Do any of you guys realize and/or think about the implications of razor thin bezels? Disregarding the issue of the digitizer registering touches simply by holding the device, there are physical/engineering issues to consider. The screen has to be held within some type of housing, not just to protect the screen but the rest of the phone itself, and the bezels on your mockup are less than 1 mm thick. Exactly what type of material do you envision the housing to be made of? Even aluminum wouldn't have enough strength at under a single mm thick. Titanium? What do you think that would do to the price of the phone?
So, to achieve bezels like this would require either a significant increase in cost or a significant reduction in durability, and this is on top of the compromise in usability. And for what purpose? Exactly what is gained from having such thin bezels?
Lastly, and not to sound like an ass, but wouldn't it be better to think up something new and/or innovative instead of just marching down road obvious? Seriously... larger screen, thinner bezels? Let me guess, you see it being a 4k resolution screen too... for no other reason than just because.
I'm sure the OP isn't actually designing it.
The makers know what works. And regardless..... Most things point to no more nexus phones anyway. ?
I'm not a graphics designer or somewhat else and I'm not familiar with building phones so that was just a try how I thought it could look.
Nevertheless many thanks for your opinions and comments.

I'm not a graphics designer or somewhat else and I'm not familiar with building phones so that was just a try how I thought it could look.
Nevertheless many thanks for your opinions and comments.

Did you see that come from his lips?
Otherwise just yet another rumor.

Chill out man... The kid just gave HIS concept of what he desires in the next nexus phone!!!

It looks really nice. I would not think twice to buy
Looks like an HTC..i don't like these big screen on the modern smartphone, 5" are the best size for me!

Hi,
I created a little concept about the successor of the Nexus 5.

HTC one M8 bend test

found this video in my facebook stream, dont know if anybody has seen it yet i thought i would post it. Anyways, the iphone 6 holds up better than the M8 in the bend test.

meh. In an actual real world use the m8 is much more rigid than the iphone6

Actually, we don't know this for sure.
On the other hand, the fact that Consumer Reports test showed a stronger iPhone 6 plus over iPhone six makes me think that there's something wrong with their methodology.

When is your phone ever going to be supported on two sides, lifted off a surface, with a single point putting pressure on just the center.
That's about as far away from a real world test as you can get.
The curved structure of the m8 adds rigidity when there is an even distribution of pressure, while making it vulnerable to directed pressure (something that pretty much never happens to a phone).
On the other hand the flat shape and added surface area of the iPhone 6+ makes it more susceptible to even distributions of pressure on uneven surfaces, like your bum and a curved chair (a lot more likely in real world usage).
Just my 2¢

I am sorry. But you just said a whole lot of nonsense in terms of physics.
The curved structure - adds rigidity - when there's an even distribution of pressure - making it vulnerable to direct pressure...
You really don't know anything at all in physics, do you?

It's a damn phone. Don't sit on it and you're fine. Don't put it through a bend test and you're fine. No need to attack anyone on the knowledge of physics. Was your CE emphasis in structural engineering too?
How about you post your opinion?
Adding a curve to the backside of a flat surface will greatly improve structural integrity compared to a double sided flat surface. When taking onto consideration an evenly distributed load.

Instead of just posting flaming crap, how about you post your opinion? Since apparently your a physics major.
Also, yes, adding a curve to the backside of a flat surface will greatly improve structural integrity compared to a double sided flat surface. Especially when taking onto consideration an evenly distributed load.

Amen...granted this is just a phone and we'd be going way off topic, but there's a reason why the arch has been used in so many structures throughout our history. The basic principles still apply.

Hey! That looks just like my phone!
You see that gold Dodge POS?
That's where I double-tap to get to the lockscreen info!

You pulled the physics card, not me.
Pretty bad comeback too. For one, they're driving on the left hand side...not a Dodge. Missing small details like that is a pretty good sign you're not a physics major, nor a structural engineer.

I did pull that card, sorry. But I'm also trying to get beyond bull**** reasons that fanboys use to justify their preferences.
The only "scientific" test performed so far has been by Consumer Reports.
I questioned their methodology because of the seemingly inconsistent result of ip6 being weaker than ip6+.
Otherwise, I don't really have a reason to think that their results were wrong. It just may be that my M8 is weaker than ip6+. But first, the Consumer Reports results need to be confirmed by a second party.

I apologize, that got out of had. I have edited and deleted my posts.
Look, iPhone 6 is made of soft metal (aluminum) and is also a FLAT slab of it. When I picked up the 6 and the 6+ at the verizon store the other day I had no problem figuring out why people were bending theirs. It's the most fragile feeling iPhone today and I felt like I had to wrap it in bubble wrap. However, the video that "unbox therapy" put up isn't real world usage. All that shows is the user can bend the 6 by putting enough stress on a single point of the phone that it eventually bends. The M8 feels like it would hold up much better in the real world than the 6 or 6+ would. I have an m8 coming today to replace my iPhone 5s.
Is anyone else impressed with Samsung holding up that well?
I personally prefer the lighter Samsung material over the Aluminum in the M8.

It will be interesting to see how the Samsung L will compare.
Bottom line, the guy from unboxtherapy has set a new standard for testing. I'm sure we can all expect to see this "bend test" from here on.
