My Nexus 6 concept - What do you think? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I created a little concept about the successor of the Nexus 5. Maybe its called Nexus 6 or Nexus 5 (2014).
Rumors say that it will have a 5.5" display so I decided to build this in my concept. Its just a 2D render, not a 3D or something.
I were really amazed that this 5.5" display fits in a body which is just a few millimeters larger than the one of the Nexus 5. I compared the two.
So final question: What do you think about my concept?

looks nice but a bezel that thin would give you random touches on the side when trying to hold the device

Perhaps making the device thicker by a mm or two would prevent the random touches you mention.
Would also mean a larger (higher capacity) battery could be installed.
Though the almost bezel-less design, when used with a protective case/bumper may cause issues with screen edge touches.

Nice to hear your opinions

For those bezels they might have to move the buttons to the back ala LG G2/3. I like it though.

The bezel is too small, and the fact that the bottom has a different shape to the top really annoys me. Like the speaker grille though.

No bezel barely will mean bigger cases would be overlapping the screen space. Not good. For marks, or using pie or sidebars.

I like it! Never did care for Bezels...they sux's!

Do any of you guys realize and/or think about the implications of razor thin bezels? Disregarding the issue of the digitizer registering touches simply by holding the device, there are physical/engineering issues to consider. The screen has to be held within some type of housing, not just to protect the screen but the rest of the phone itself, and the bezels on your mockup are less than 1 mm thick. Exactly what type of material do you envision the housing to be made of? Even aluminum wouldn't have enough strength at under a single mm thick. Titanium? What do you think that would do to the price of the phone?
So, to achieve bezels like this would require either a significant increase in cost or a significant reduction in durability, and this is on top of the compromise in usability. And for what purpose? Exactly what is gained from having such thin bezels?
Lastly, and not to sound like an ass, but wouldn't it be better to think up something new and/or innovative instead of just marching down road obvious? Seriously... larger screen, thinner bezels? Let me guess, you see it being a 4k resolution screen too... for no other reason than just because.

I'm sure the OP isn't actually designing it.
The makers know what works. And regardless..... Most things point to no more nexus phones anyway. ?

I'm not a graphics designer or somewhat else and I'm not familiar with building phones so that was just a try how I thought it could look.
Nevertheless many thanks for your opinions and comments.

Project Pluto V2.

Hello Everyone. I am here today to talk to you about Project Pluto.
This is a small update, I have been working with anodized aluminum for a little while and i found that it scratches a bit too often.
That is why I made some design changes, the top and bot of the phone are still dark grey aluminum but the center is composed of the glass in the front and a soft touch material that wraps around the device.
This soft touch material in a bit higher (0.5-1mm) than the aluminum so that when laid on a desk the aluminum does not touch the surface.
The main advantages that this design has is the high durability, better grip and a removable back cover which can lead to a replaceable battery if spares are available.

Please leave feedback bellow, I want to make something that people will enjoy using.
Disclaimer FCC and CE logos are for demonstration purposes only.
I think this is a great idea maybe you should start a kickstarter page. I would love a phone designed by fans for fans and not just for profit (although i'm sure there would be some)
Also don't forget Micro SD
Nice looking piece of hardware.
Looks like a radio... No offense, just stating what I see.

Up to 32 gig SD Card, forgot to put it in the specs info. The plan is to ask for funding on kickstarter after a few prototypes are ready,
Funding is needed to buy the parts for the first batch of phones and also for the FCC approval process if it is needed.
And yes, the goal is for this to be a 5 person project, so profits are going to be low.
Hey if you get a page up and you have a prototype or two I'd be in i love the idea and I would imagine it would be nexus like with updates
And I bet once this becomes farther along you will have a lot of support from on here.
The look of it reminds me of the N9
Also as someone who is right handed having the power button on the left makes it slightly awkward to reach.

When the kickstarter page is up I'll be sure to send you a message,
The design looks a bit n9y and a bit like the old ipod nanos. and some iphone thrown in there.
Also the lock button is on the right, initially the picture of it was supposed to be on top of the "back picture" but it looked weird on Photoshop.
The lock button is on the right, basically the same place the iPhone has it.
I like the phone. Great specs. What is your target date

-Add a little more room to top and bottom and put on a front facing camera
-Round the edges on the top and bottom as well you don't want when people grip the phone for them to have sharp edges and the bottom corners
Also about the power button
-Ohh ok sorry when i was looking at it it looked reversed
Also what kind of screen? i know the resolution but what kind of material for the screen

Front Facing camera, like NFC can not be added for 2 reasons, thickness. the current one is 11.5mm thick already, and price, the current specs are already quite expensive. a ffc would add another 12 dollars in manufacturing costs. and could not be done with the company we are looking to partner with.
the top and bottom don't feel like hard edges because of the sides are rounded. I've tried many ways to round it but I cannot find a way in which it works well and doesn't look stupid. If you find a way draw it and ill add to the design and see if people like it
The screen is regular amoled with qhd resolution

It doesnt necessarily have to run Android, it is the most supported open source OS.
but the hardware will be open, meaning someone could port meego or tizen to it.

Ahh ok well the FFC and NFC aren't necessities but they would be cool yet i can understand where you are coming from it seems like the cost for the phone itself would be close to the selling price. Also good to know that the edges aren't to rough and are slightly rounded.
Is it possible to get a size comparison between this phone and maybe one or two other ones to give us an idea on what the size of it will be
Ps ohhhh i was hoping for amoled

The back reminds be too much of a radio really with how the speaker grill is designed and the bland back. Plus the object protruding out of the top reminds me of an antenna unless that is simply a arrow.
If you are going for a minimalistic style then you've kept on tune. Just simply not my style.

HTC One L Concept - Render for next HTC 5" Smartphone

Hi everyone, I am new here. In free time I like to make various car & motorcycle renders. Recently I decided to start with gadget renders.
This is my vision how next HTC model should look, presented as One L. According to rumors this phone should feature Full HD 5" screen with following specs similar to One series.
In terms of design, my goal was to make elegant shape that is recognizable as part of HTC One family, but in same time that can handle large screen, surrounding it from all sides.
Here is my concept presented as HTC teaser ad:

A 5 inch screen is too large to be comfortable to me. I won't be buying one. The 4.3 inch screen seemed slightly too large until I had it in my hand for a few minutes then it felt fine.
I agree with you, 4.3" is perfect size for me too. But, seems that there is a lot of people that need phones like this. IMO future HTC with 5" screen could be very successful.

Hopefully HTC will be successful as I would like to see more handset manufacturers, but I think they have made a big mistake with the One series by making the battery non-removable and not including an SD slot. Unless they reverse that decision and soon I will probably be looking elsewhere. It is really a shame since they did a great job with the Sensation. I really love it, well built, feels solid with the aluminum case.
This looks slick...
I don't think size of the screen matters as long as overall size of device doesn't increases.
If they can cram 5" into existing size then it would be perfect... just a thought..

This. I've been saying this for so long. The argument shouldn't be about display size. It should be about overall phone size. I find my 4.3" Sensation to be the perfect form factor, but if they could fit a 4.7" display in the overall body of a Sensation-sized phone I would buy it in a heartbeat.
The render is beautiful. Thin bezels+large displays are the way for the future of smartphones. People always say this BS about how bezels can't be thinner because you'd accidentally tap the display, but I say BS because when I hold my Sensation I'm never holding any part of the front of the phone. My hand only touches the sides/back. I will jump on small bezel phones the moment they come out.
The render is also noticeably more rectangular than the One X. I wonder if you could do a render of the back? It would be cool to see your own personal touch on that.

I don't think 5 inch would be a problem, since screen size is measured diagonally, the screen needs only to be longer, and fill up the entire front face of the phone (like this one)
Nice rendering btw
First of all thanks guys for comments!

I really like the render on the front. I wonder if it's feasible though unless they axed a front facing camera.
The rear looks like a render to me, a little bit flat, especially around the camera area. It looks like there's a power button on the top, but I don't see any volume rocker - it probably would appear on at least one of the sides no?
I really like the design though. It'll be impressive to see if they manage to get a screen to look like that yet fit in all the stuff they want. Without any real bezel it'll be tricky to get in the prox sensor + cameras + notification LED. But that's what they pay engineers for right?

"HTC One i" Design Concept based on HTC One Series

Here's a design concept I put together using AutoCAD 2012. I may have gone a little overboard with the suggested internal memory (I can dream) but it's just a concept after-all.

It may not look it from this angle, but the phone is actually curved slightly, and the camera lense is built slightly inset from the top & bottom edge of the handset, so the lense wouldn't get scratched when you place it down, something for HTC to remember next time maybe!
Here's a 10 second video clip of the model.
Comments welcome
NOTE: Looks a lot better in HD

Ideas for another design? something different?
It's pretty nice, but that camera definitely needs to be moved. I don't even want to think about the awkwardness of trying to hold that with one hand and take a picture.
a few things about this:
-the camera is ridiculous. can you imagine laying that thing down on a table?
-why all the third party apps, and stuff in the notification bar? it makes it seem less realistic.
-It should really have onscreen buttons.
-storage/ram isn't unreasonable at all.
-you left on the docking pins? i always thought more devices should have those, not less.
-looks like sense 4.1 to me. normally a jump in numbers means a change in UI.
-good going with the battery % image though, that should be standard on all android devices.
-if you want to make this a real superphone, try adding in a really great 8 MP camera sensor
-what's "full HD" mean? full 720p? TrueHD (1080p)? If its 720p, then you should bump it up to 800 x 1280, so it surpasses "retina" PPI. If its 1080p, than this should really be a 5"+ phone.
Overall though, I like it. looking forwards to seeing more renders form you

The camera wouldnt touch the table if u place it down, the phone is curved slightly to avoid this (it's hard to see in the image) The reason I put it there is simple, thats were I personally would preffer it to go. When I take pictures (landscape) I tend to hold my One X with both hands, and I'm always covering the lense up with my fingers. It's just an idea anyway, I'm re-working this design slightly in the next one, but for now the camera is staying in the middle :cyclops:
The apps... I literally couldn't find a decent quality screenshot of the generic ROM, so that screenshot is off my One X as is.
Onscreen buttons? It has the 3 touch buttons that the One series have.
I'd love to see a phone like this with massive amounts of memory. I have a lot of music (and I mean a lot, like around 3TB worth) so this for me would be a great feature, and I would happily pay more for that extra 32GB So this is kinda like my ideal dream phone really.
I contemplated about the docking pins but just decided not to add them, the next one has them
I used a screenshot from my One X running ARHD 9.x so the UI is actually sense 4.1 (I actually just made up the specs from my head).
Battery % image is from the Battery mod in the One X dev section, a must have.
Full HD just means at-least 1080p resolution. Like I said this is really just an idea, I didn't even consider the technical details until after the render was finished.
The next one is a little "curvier"

Ahh... yeah that would be better I guess. Save some of that valuable screen space. Although I do like how you can see the 3 buttons on the phone when the screen is off, and I know a lot of people use the middle button as a wake-up for the screen, instead of the power button. I may do a more unusual design after my current one

its meant to be held in both hands. I dunno, it just seemed like a good idea at the time.
I always take pictures landscape so it makes sense to me.
You sure that "i" label was the best choice?

Honestly? no lol. I couldn't think what to name it, but I noticed the back curved kinda like the old iphone, so I thought, what the hell
It seemed clever at the time, "One i" / sounds like "One eye" :cyclops:
My next one is basically a re-design of this model, so it will look similar, but it has a new name will add it soon.
other than camera placing, i feel everything looks good
Added new version here
Yes the camera position is a screamer. Also... 2gb ram. This thing ought to run like a chicken on heroin. And maybe you should bump 8 to 12 megapixels. 8 seems to be the industry standard nowadays. Instead of the bezel being a constant thinness all around, maybe be a bit longer on the top. I can see that you wanted to make the back look like a real camera so you put the lense central. Great post though - refreshing.

All good, but the camera is in the wrong place. Congrats plasmadan !
I like it, but as almost everyone else stated; the camera placement is awkward.
I love this phone though, good job!
From the way it looks, having the phone curved that way would make it awkward to hold.

pretty nice, but its almost identical to the one x, and the camera is in the middle, not good

The smartphone of the future - how should it look like?

From my early years I was trying to create the ideal design of a phone. But then Steve Jobs ruined all my illusions with totally changing the path evolution of smartphones. But you can't stop the progress, and the smartphone of the future must blow up our minds as much as iPhone did. But how must it look and which functions must it be capable of?
These points with me :
1. Let's forgot the battery
2. Update hardware with OTA
3. No Chinese pirated app stores ...

The original iPhone was a PDA without a pen. There was nothing remotelly mind blowing about it.
In need op 10 posts, are you? Rules, we have them for a reason.
On the topic though: Google Contact Lenses. That'd be great...

IPhone really was a PDA without a pen - but if it is so easy figure out the usability of such a product why nobody did?
And look here: there are a few models with pen on the market and the most - without. I think this is the confirmation of my words. (Nevertheless, I like Android more then iPhone)
10 posts - yes, you were right. But my comments and posts can not be supposed as "spam" - I am trying to write useful staff,
Google Contact Lenses - sounds cool

Nobody did it because the touch screens weren't very good at registering fingers at the time, and the PDA was for the professional user to keep notes, not the general population.
Apple improved the screen to register fingertips (which it still didn't always do very well. You couldn't write on it for sh*t, and half the time it didn't register a touch.), but a single step improvement is by no means mindblowing. There were plenty of computer displays that already used tip-touchscreens; you found them in shops, factories... Apple just made the screen smaller.
What was mindblowing about Apple's launch of the iPhone was their exceptional marketing strategy. As much as I dislike their products (and their sheer lack of service), I have nothing but respect for their marketing team.
Yes, you weren't spamming. But making posts for the sake of getting posts, even if they're useful, is frowned upon; you're supposed to get your first 10 posts by helping others.
I also very much like the idea of foldable displays, but only if we can get them truly foldable. Imagine, your entire computer on a flexible sheet of plastic? You could stick it in your wallet, and then fold it out to 22"! I would so love that. With the contact lenses, of course (have you seen Continuum? think of the contact lenses like the CMR in that.. )
Controlled by mind...

A Smartphone with flexible screen
^ that a real concept or a mock up someone did? I really like that. I can see that as the smartphone of the future.

I don't understand why people are obsessed with flexible screens? What I want is to reduce the input delay from 100ms to 10ms.
Nokia showed a video of a bracelet phone years ago, then the chatter seemed to just die.

A screen that may be able to flex does not mean it would be able to fold nor will the other components such as the battery, motherboard or case.
the future? evolution of current architecture. from battery to processor.
do you guys remember when many of us laugh on iPhone 5 because it's getting taller. but now? other vendors do the same.

We're talking about the future; nobody specified an era.
Remember how massive the old computers were? You needed a truck to house 100KB. Hard to imagine we can stuff 128GB into a thumb-sized piece of plastic when you look back at that. They can store TB's on plastic tape.
And when Quantum Computing finally kicks off, we'll stop thinking about physical size altogether, because we'll be talking about nano technology.

The iPhone 5
got laughed at because the only thing changing with it was an extra row of icons.
No-one have followed suit, if Android manufacturers are changing the ratio from 16:9 that's to compensate for on-screen buttons.

Kingston have fitted 1TB onto a thumb drive, well to be fair it's about a double thumb drive.
Quantum computing is a far way away though and it's very unclear what it'll do for personal computing. It'll be king for decryption and similar, if it can be utilized for graphics we'll see pretty much unlimited graphics where software will be the bottleneck. (Imagine coding a graphic engine for a quantum computer). Exciting stuff though.

A mix of both
A mix of the new projector technology used in iphone6, with the bendable screens of samsung. With a Paranoid Rom
how far into the future? I think eventually it would be an augmentation into our pupils. Yup...in the future we'll be installing ROMs to our eyeballs.

Nexus 6P tpu case spotted

Spotted this on amazon.

I can't wait for this phone... 810 or not.
Waiting to see what the other cases will look like.
And interesting lock screen image they have on there.. is that what it's going to look like?
That seems like the Emotion UI from Huawei.
Marshmallow is almost the same as Lollipop.
(I guess you can flash Emotion UI anyway, or just port the lock app )
thats just a faux image, it doesnt have the hump on the back which is shown in every previous leak. just a placeholder image dude

Ok. I was only curious.
And I never mentioned the hump on the back.
But the CASE shows it has room for the hump.

That case doesn't have any room for a hump. The camera, mic and fp scanner are in the right spot tho (according to the leaks) just missing the hump. The leaks could have been a a early prototype tho. We'll see on the 29th

True indeed....the camera and sensors are in the right spot...just missing the hump. I hope they got rid of the hump. I really want the phone but will not get it with that stupid hump in there.
They honestly should have kept the nexus 6 moto design. One thing they could learn from apple and Samsung for that matter is to keep a great design and just build on it till its perfect. They could just made shamu smaller and added the fingerprint scanner where the moto symbol was and that's it.

i liked the moto design it was just a tad too big. and i dont mind the huawei stuff. their premium phones look and feel pretty amazing in the hand. and their fp scanner tech is definitely quick to respond and on point. one of the reasons why i enjoy the nexus line so much (besides the glory and awesomeness that is stock android) is that you know the new nexus wont look the same as last years model. it feels like youre getting a brand new phone every year not just an upgrade

That's true about getting a brand new phone....only problem is if the new phone isn't to your liking you end up waiting 2 years for a new device...hence why I'm using a 2013 N5 instead of N6. I like the idea of a new phone every year with an updated model 6 months later.
i guess the images of the case i was looking at (with a small hump where the hump is) fooled me. I mean, am i the only one who sees it?

Guys I don't know what are you saying.. I. Clearly see the hump.
Look at the side images.
The hump is just 2 mm, people got fooled by the contrasting colors in pictures but it's not nearly as bad as it seems..

either way you can can clearly see that that photo was shopped. just look at the cut outs. and ill admit that with the new leaks that came out yesterday the hump doesnt look anywhere near as prominent as it did in that 1st leak . i loving the black color though. im already sold on it tbh lol
It's a nexus device, must be original Marshmallow

but waiting to see if spigen is going to have anything for the 6p.
Reading the past posts, the op is definitely the 6P case...also if, IF I get one I'm looking at that Verus case on Amazon... pretty slick.
I'm wondering if/when Spigen will release their cases. I almost exclusively buy their cases every year but I always try other brands as well. I'm the end k use Spigen/Ringke slim on a daily basis so I hope they get announced soon

Or Ringke, I'll be happy with either since Spigen said no to the 6P
