Hi All, here's the use case: I use my phone for work quite a lot, so I need a stable, fully configured version running during working hours (this is, my curent rooted-stock 4.1.2, but also I want to play with other ROMS and possibly in the future migrate from my main stock ROM to a custom one.
I've read that it was possible to dual-boot on CM9 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774795) and that for other S3 (I9300 and I9305) there's a kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709686) that allows multi-boot pretty easy.
Now I want to know, is it possible and is there a good totorial to dual boot in an updated Verizon S3 (I535VRBMF1)?
Thanks

No as none of the kernels has a dual boot option.
As mentioned it's not possible. Next best option is to nandroid and restore as needed

The way these S3's are... it just isn't possible to dual boot.
I wish it was an option.

Is it really impossible? Back before the bootloader was unlocked we were using kexec to theoretically do the same thing.

No isn't possible with this phone since we no longer use kexec and pretty much all of the custom kernels don't have any dual boot option.

I'm positive. The best and closest thing we can do is backup ROMs and flash back and forth between them... but actually dual booting won't happen. It has something to do with how our phones boot up... I've read the explanation somewhere.

Hmm, I'll have to look for that explanation. It would seem to me that someone could build a kernel with kexec again and multiboot kind of like Tasssadar did for the Nexus 7. I realize it's different hardware than the N7, but seems it would be doable since something similar was already done once-upon-a-time on this device.

There were certain kernels that could dual boot for an S3, but from my understanding, not for the VZW S3 (I could be wrong here, or just wrong entirely). I really don't know much about kernels and hardware, but maybe it has something to do with the lack of hardware that a VZW S3 has compared to the others. Quite possibly the processors since the VZW is actually only a dual core? Not sure if that would have anything to do with it. Lol.

Dual Boot has definitely been achieved on the Verizon Galaxy S3 via kexec. It was how we were able to get around the locked bootloader. Once it was unlocked however we no longer needed it so it was dropped. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28809516
I for one would definitely donate to any dev that was able to come up with a working solution (like Tasssadar's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011403)

Ok, so I'm not a dev and I don't get most of the terms being thrown around here (although I think I've actually picked up a decent amount). Basically, what I'd like to do with my phone is to root and then upgrade to JB as soon as possible (and to Key Lime Pie as soon as possible once it comes out too). With how the bootloader stuff stands right now, will I be able to do that safely once ROMs start coming out or would I have to wait for Verizon's OTA's?
Which phone would that be, sgs3? The bootloader is encrypted but I believe you can flash roms with stock kernels as its been rooted. But there are several threads explaining the options... Get a gnex!

Yeah I was leaning towards the GNex but if I can get custom roms on an S3 then why not get that (as long as I'm ok with stock kernels)?
Yeh that's what I'm not sure of...especially with this 'developer' sgs3 from Samsung. I have given up on skins from oems who won't give into Verizon's ridiculous demands. I'd be very cautious attempting to flash anything yet as its very new.

Hey guys-
I use Good for Enterprise on my gs3, currently running stock ICS. I want to flash the new stock rooted JB leak (11/15 kernel) but since Good is not officially supported on JB with this device, my supervisor is telling me not to do it since it could cause the app to not work right. I am rooted with an unlocked bootloader just itching to flash this...
Getting new PINs for the app are not an issue, since I am one of the Good admins in my company.
Anyone know if it is ok for me to do this? I think he is being ridiculous about this, considering we know it has gs3 support and JB support. Sprint has has JB for weeks already!
Doesn't this app check for root? The company I work for uses Good and a buddy had a S3 rooted (Sprint) and the admins said he couldn't use it because he was rooted. If you put on a stock not rooted image then I would think it would work unless JB gives it problems.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Try it. Make sure you do a nandroid backup first. If you run into a problem you can just revert back to what you were using before you flashed and pick up like you never wiped all data apps and info are restored.

I have been rooted for a few months now, and have not come across an issue... I have read that it checks for root also, but maybe the way my company configured it, it doesn't matter?
I am the guy in my office that configures the PINs and i can see device status for everything, and mine seems normal.

Your employer can choose whether to allow Good on a rooted device. Mine allows it, and Good works fine on my GS3 with the first JB release.. Except for the "secure browser".. Apparently that does not support JB yet.

I didn't find anything for your particular device, but you should be able to use any ROMs made for the AT&T Tab2. Is yours the 7, 8.9, or the 10.1?

I could be wrong but aren't those ROMs for the Tab 1 10.1? Flashing those on a Tab 2 most likely will turn your Tab 2 into a brick. And there are no ROMs for the ATT Tab 2 except for a deodexed stock ROM. Devs just don't support these tablets.

They are for the Tab2 (considering I pulled the link for the first one from this forum).
The CM builds support both the T779 and the P75XX series Tabs. Also, the I497 is supported also (however, there could be issues with it such as only edge data and something weird with the system partition). There are quite a few ROMs on tabletroms.com that support the I497/T779 also.
Correction... there used to be... Looks like I haven't been over there for awhile. Sorry about that.

So I can or can't use any roms?
http://droidbasement.com/galaxy/roms/cm10.1/p4tmo/
Will this work with the T779?
That is for the Tab 1, so no you can't. They are 2 totally different Tablets. I have the AT&T I497 which is basically the same as the T-mobile T779. I have looked extensively for a custom ROM for either device. They just don't exist. I can deodex a stock ROM but I am not talented enough to port a ROM over or I would try.
Is there anyone out there making a rom t779 compatible? ?

why would anyone root a T779? I have one also, and have been asking myself that question. I know rooting with Odin is possible, but what does it really gain you?
Silly, why not? Freedom to do many things, for me anyway..I'm rooted that's not what I'm looking for, like all the other galaxy 10.1 that have custom roms I was wanting one for mine.

I think will be any Hellraiser.zip with modem and kernel and other system files for SGH-I497 like i have on Samsung Galaxy S II I777AT&T. first i did install custom firmware for GT EU model then install Hellraiser and all worked! May be someone know how collect Hellraiser for I497 ?
I have a rooted SGH-T779, if anyone still cares. I found a TWRP recovery that can be flashed through Odin here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...p-2-4-4-0-espresso10att.2228332/post-84234909. I know it says sgt-i497 but that is the AT&T version of the Galaxy Tab2 10.1 4G. It's same hardware, CPU, etc. as the TMO SGH-T779. Once the TWRP is flashed you can flash CF-Autoroot and you shall be rooted! Sadly I haven't found any cool ROMS for either the SGH-I497 or SGH-t779. As the years roll by I keeping hoping but it doesn't seem likely.

I looked up your specific tutorial, it definitely will not work.
That only works on the international model. As a general rule, never trust a guide unless it says it's specifically for the Verizon galaxy s3. It's locked down much tighter than any other s3 models, and many alterations that can be performed on the other variants will often brick this model.

You can still root, install a ROM with Safe Root or Safestrap or whatever, and have a better-running phone. You simply can't install a different kernel... it sounds like you can even still have a custom Recovery (modified TWRP is my understanding).

It wouldn't, you need a CDMA device, the international s3 doesn't have CDMA bands. Verizon leaves you pretty limited in device selection.

Maybe the stangest request in xda´s time
As I need an app only compatible with 4.3 and nothing newer to run on my rooted Nexus 5, I desperately need JB for my Nexus. Does this exist or do I need a tech friend (or someone in here to bake a rom for me. Is this even possible?
Kind regards
Some q&a
Q) Is it technically possible?
A) Pretty much anything is technically possible
Q) On a scale of 1-100, how difficult is it?
A) 99.9999
Q) Will anyone ever release JB for N5?
A) Nope
Q) Not even if I ask nicely?
A) Nope
Q) Why not? Why is it so difficult?
A) The N5 was not released with JB. There is no JB Source code compatible with the N5. There are no devices with the same hardware as the N5 on JB. All the drivers and kernel would need to be backported. This is an extremely difficult, if not impossible task. No one will do this.

Sounds like you need to get on the app developers ass to update his useless JB only drivel
Maybe a stupid question, but have you tried sideloading the app? The reason I ask is because while it may not officially support KK, you may still be able to sideload it. T-Mobile VV for example didn't officially support KK until a few weeks ago (and consequently couldn't be installed through GP), but many people, myself included were still able to sideload it and it worked just fine. If you can't sideload it you'd have better luck pressing the app creator to update his app. No developer is ever going to port an outdated version of Android.
