Hi guys, I asked my dad to buy the TF700 (this would be my first tablet) in my home country because the model hasn't been released in the UK (it should be today) and it's cheaper there. A friend of mine will be bringing it to me when he comes back from summer holidays.
So I've had him do the proper inspection on my tablet (according to this thread) by alienedd), and so far the tablet has passed most of the tests. But just now he noted that the tablet feels a bit warm (in particular at one of the corners of the tablet), considerably warmer than the iPad (he has been reading blogs and watching youtube HD videos using the tablet).
I wonder what kind of normal temperature should I expect for this tablet? and whether I should be concerned with what my dad noted.

What sort of tests was he running? High performance activities like certain games will push the temperature up. it could feel pretty warm, but will cool off before damage is done.
Just web surfing, and typing this, my TF700 is running at 25C.
My top left corner of the tablet (where the power button is) gets a bit warmer than other spots while watching youtube videos.

Just have him install Cool Tool @ playstore. You can set it as a floating widget. It monitors everything that you choose it to monitor. I have it monitoring battery temp. CPU speeds and WiFi signal strengths. This will help you determine much more accurately if your temp is getting to extreme. On my daily use with my Infinity, my temps never go above 100 degrees unless I'm pushing it with heavy gaming.

With brightness set to ~20-30%, I normally see room temperature + a few degrees, basically 24-27*C, sometimes more, sometimes less.
With brightness set to max. and in some sunrays at it, I was getting as high as 41-47*C.
Edit: I meant the battery temperature, as this is what I have monitored in the tray.
The tab I have shows 120.07F degrees right out of sleep.
Then after browsing it ramps to 140.00F degrees in balanced mode with nothing forced.
Never seen the temp above 140.00F
I use system tuner to look at the CPU temperature.
I guess SysTune is accurate...I wouldn't know if it was lying anyhoo.
My previous Acer tablet was returned because it was showing temperatures in the 195F-225F degree range with below normal use.
That thing started crashing all over the place.

Sooo if my tablet is at 102F right now just from browsing websites (5 tabs open) do you guys think i should try to exchange it for another? It got pretty hot yesterday when i played zenbound 2 for maybe 15 min. Brightness on about 2,% performance mode to get it to stop altering screen brightness ( auto is off).

I just played ShadowGun for 10 minutes then quickly checked temp and found it was only 93F in ~80F ambient temp. Highest I've seen on my tab (outdoor use) is 118F during the hottest part of Midwest summer when it was 100+F for days on end. Based on my experiences, anything above 120F would seem a bit abnormal.
Just checked mine using System Tuner and it was at 120F after short use of Tapatalk, etc... I believe this is completely normal - its not even warm to the touch on the outside...
For those that say it theirs never even reaches 100 degree F, what are you using to check the temperature?
EDIT: Ha! Cool Tool reports 95F while System Tuner reports 127F! Obviously, one of them is wrong - or one is monitoring CPU temp and the other is battery temp. Guess we need to clarify which tool is reporting which temp...

That doesn't sound right. Your tablet would literally be smoking and smelling if it were that high wouldn't it?! Having it functioning alone with such high temps shouldn't be possible. It will literally be too hot to touch and would definitly fry your cores? Mine when it reached 104 degrees F. It was hard to hold due to the amount of heat. I can't imagine temps going 140 and above!

I don't know what to tell ya...
It's hit a 140 a few times as reported by Sys Tuner.
I've done some resetting in System Tuner and have gotten the temps back down.
Out of sleep I'm seeing 103 degrees now.
It still hits 140 occasionally.
I can tell when it's cooking because the area under the back camera gets warm.
Like I said in my original post I wouldn't know if Sys Tuner is lying to me or not.
Yeah, I think Sys Tuner is reporting the temperature wrong - like I said, when SysTuner reports 127F, Cool Tool reports 95F, so something is way off - probably Sys Tuner is wrong is my guess...

Blah guess this one is going back to best buy.. I was using Cool Tool. The back was burning hot and during the middle of me editing my last post to say I was using Cool Tool the tablet crashed and went through a few boot loops until it finally loaded back up.. The 102F temp was just from have 5 tabs opened on browser, using the tablet indoors, almost full battery (just turned on), 20% brightness. I switched it back down to power saving mode just to see and the past few hours it's been at 93-98F from just 2 tabs opened on browser. No games being played since then. I also had it fully off for a few hours in between.
P.S. Do you guys know what serial number your units start with? Mine is C7. At the best buy besides the other C7 I opened the day before (had scratches) the rest of them were C6. Wondering if the batch makes a difference.
I don't think 100F is out of bounds for this device - like I said, mine was at 95F just using tapatalk. Having 5 tabs going in a browser would certainly make it run hotter than Tapatalk...
EDIT: Just out of curiosity, try loading Dual Battery Widget and see what temp is reports...

makes me miss my original prime. I could have 2 browsers with multiple tabs up, checking gmail, playing games, on performance mode (to get away from screen changing brightness even though auto brightness off) and it would only get warm. Now if their updates didn't break my gps and make my screen bug out all the time..
What does dual battery widget do besides monitor battery? I installed it but it just logs battery right? CoolTemp is still at 91F right now. 100F was whatever for a powerful tablet since my laptop burns my legs normall, but once it got to 102+ it started going through boot loops from overheating.

Dual battery widget also reports the temperature - just curious if it reports the same values. But regardless, my tablet seems to reach the same temps as your - I don't think the temp is problem...

How do you get it to show the temp? On the bottom right it just shows a battery icon, and when you click into the widget it just shows a line graph of the current battery % of the tablet.. while the system menu on bottom right shows the dock %.

I actually turn the notification icon off completely. Create a widget with it instead and then click on the widget - it reports the temperature.

So my question is that whether it is my nexus 5 which heats up even after using it a little bit or anyone else is also having the same problem??????

To be honests, for me, the only way to get it noticebly hot is play Real Racing 3, Asphalt 8 or other heavy games.
Oh and using it for browsing, calls, facebook etc wile on charge heats it up too.
According my opinion its ( feels ) much cooler than N4, i had before.
U have any case/bumper ?

The Nexus 5 definitely runs much cooler overall than the Nexus 4. These devices with their processors are made to heat up in an intense situation such as gaming. The device has an individual heat sync to soak that up and release it once the processing you've initiated has been lowered. Heating up is normal. The device will know when it's too hot to function, but that would take a lot to happen.
Slight warmth is nothing to be concerned about when browsing, or on a call. You should be concerned if there is no heat and you're playing a game for a few minutes or more.
Odds are high, your battery will die before the heat to the processor damages the phone. If you're finding it's difficult to hold the device because it's hot on your hands, I'd suggest setting it on a flat surface or get yourself a snug case. Mind you, a case will concentrate the heat and could potentially make it worse.

But is it supposed to get this hot while playing games? Sometimes, just by playing Plants Vs. Zombies 2, the phone gets really hot (hotter on the camera part of the phone) that makes it unplayable due to the hotness that makes the camera part untouchable (or I'll get hurt)
I'm asking if this is normal, and if it happens to you guys.

Not to be rude but does it really get that hot that you feel like you'll get hurt? I've played games before and the phone has gotten warm like all other phones I've ever owned but hot enough to "hurt me" I haven't noticed.
What I can say is that it's possible that the software (either CM11s ROM or the game you're playing) isn't fully optimized to run on the OPO so it may have the processor working extra hard when it shouldn't have to.
Remember we're basically beta testing this lovely gem so a lot of bugs and such are to be expected since the phone isn't officially open to the public.

Well, first of all, it does not happen with just Plants Vs Zombies 2, I gave that game as an example because I usually play more-demanding games (not saying that pvz2 is not a demanding game, actually, i have no idea)
And answering your question, yes, it does get hot enough to hurt me, since the camera part is where it really gets hot, and there is a metal/plastic (yes i can't distinguish, i suck) piece on the camera that when it gets hot, is really untouchable, reaching the point where it hurts by touching it.

Depends on where you are too, if you're playing it outside and its really warm (it is Summer) then yeah.

Yeah, my OPO gets this hot as well when I'm playing XCOM--the only "demanding" game I have on it at the moment. When I play other games, or during other normal usage it stays relatively cool. It gets a bit warm when charging, but that's expected from this charger.
I only just got it yesterday morning, so have only had limited testing time, but I'm getting the same thing with the front and back of the phone getting very hot, and the metal piece on the camera getting painfully hot (I have to watch how I hold it so I don't accidently touch it). I wasplaying XCOM for about an hour (the length of my train ride home) and it was hot pretty much from the start. After that hour the game finally crashed... I started it back up and within 5 min it crashed again. Guess that means it's getting throttled?
I'll be testing it again on my ride home later.

I'm using stock rom too.
Yep, it does get very hot while playing, mainly around the camera area, doesnt really bother me, I guess that with a case you wouldnt even feel it.
What do you expect? This device, like any computing device, when put under CPU load is going to generate heat, it's computing 101 guys. This is why PC's have cooling fans.

Yeah, but when we decide to buy a high-end phone, with a really good GPU and CPU, we expect some kind of use to it. Since, in my opinion, having a good GPU, means that we can play high demanding games, and watch some cool high quality movies. I personally want this phone mainly to play those kind of games, that was actually the purpose of buying this phone: knowing that i can play any kind of game i throw at it.
So yeah, I agree that like any computing device, it's normal to get hot. But is it supposed to get so hot, even hurting the holder just because he's playing Plants Vs Zombies 2 for 10 minutes? This issue kinda beats the purpose of having a great GPU. It has a great GPU yeah, but what's the purpose of having it if it overheats the phone?

You bring up a lot of good points. Its just the way the phone's thermal driver operates. Alternatively, you can switch to a kernel that operates their thermal driver differently.
What is a thermal driver?
The generic thermal sysfs provides a set of interfaces for thermal zone devices (sensors) and thermal cooling devices (fan, processor...) to register with the thermal management solution and to be a part of it.

Basically its responsible for keeping your device nice and cool. Third party kernels such as: Franco, AK kernel, furnace and various custom ROM kernels have a modified thermal driver which can help with your phone overheating. For instance, using Franco Kernel he has his own thermal driver and also removes Qualcomm's mpdecision with his own hotplugging algorithm (powering cores 3/4 on or off depending on the load). You can also downclock your phone using these kernels (as well on stock) to lower the performance of your phone so that it does not heat up but also meet a balance of your phone not lagging with the lower clock.
Other thermal drivers include: Faux's Intellithermal and so forth.

Fair enough, but your high end CPU and GPU are performing as they should be, and because there is no physical cooling system on your phone it's going to get hot. Just because it's a high end device it doesn't mean it shouldn't get hot. The fact that it has such high spec components actually suggests that it'd heat up more than your average phone. By your logic, a high end gaming PC shouldn't heat up, but we know that isn't the case.

Adding to your point... a high end gaming laptop ... yeah a highend gaming PC heats up but its not as obvious, at least not for some people unless they're on air cooling and can hear the fans. A highend gaming laptop or any multimedia laptop playing games would heat up whatever surface its laying on as well as blowing out hot air.
My point still stands as stated before if OP doesn't want his phone to get "super" hot during games, flash a custom kernel, buy FKU and set up a per-app-mode, I can play PvZ 2 and can downclock it down to 1.5-1.7 (or even lower) without any lag. Just play around with it to get to that sweet spot where you find a balance between performance and battery as well as having your phone not heat up as much as stock.

Thanks for your reply and for presenting me some solutions, but I forgot to mention that I flashed Paranoid Android already, and from my knowledge, I think I read that it has Franco's Kernel already, so there's no need to flash it, i suppose (correct me if wrong)?
And even flashing that custom ROM, the problem still persists. So, I guess the only solution is to downclock the phone while playing those games.

I'm not too familiar with that, I know Franco is on PA's team but their kernel probably isn't 100% Franco Kernel. I could be wrong on this, I am not fully familiar with the situation but you might as well just flash Franco Kernel over it just so you're safe. If you have his FKU app then you can set Per-App-Mode as I mentioned previously.
Custom ROM isn't going to help your phone be "cooler" in temperature. Its on the kernel side of things. You'll need to downclock the phone accordingly on CPU frequency and GPU frequency. I was able to play 1.2-1.7GHz with 330 MHz on GPU. Don't take what I post for granted though, you'll need to sit down and try it out yourself to get the balance between temperature and performance.
At the end of the day, you'll also squeeze out more battery life playing the game too so thats always nice. Lowered temperatures and additional battery life? :victory:

Yes, mine gets too damn hot as well, to the point of burning my fingers, and I was not gaming, just browsing the internet while charging...
It even smells like "hot laptop" and even in the morning, after being charging and off all night, it was still hot...
Also, on my side pocket, I could feel it's heat on my leg while driving...

It's probably not a great idea to leave your phone on charge all night. You can't overcharge it, but the more time the battery spends at the peak voltage (4.2v) the faster it will degrade. Just a tip.

Have to check ao much time it will take to reach 100% and then switch it off via timer or such, but I never had this problem with other phones.
Also the OPO charger it's rated at 5V-2.1A and not even my tablets had such chargers...
The highest one I've it's the Nexus 7 one, that's rated at 5.2V-1.5A.
i recently getting extrene heat on my OnePlus to the point that i have to stop n reboot the phone for it to cool down. I have been playing brave frontier since the 1st firmware. The phone runs fine smooth. N suddenly it gets really hot in just 15min play of the game.
I have to stop n reboot the phone. Otherwise it still hot even though i quit the game without reboot. So reboot is a must.
The same thing happened to me today when I downloaded XCOM Enemy Within. I had the phone on "performance" mode. Its pretty much just stock everything, except I unlocked the bootloader, root, etc. I'm going to try and play in on "power save" mode tomorrow. (its late as hell, I should be asleep, I work in 5 hours.) anyway, if that doesn't work, then I will try installing the Franco kernel.

First I really love my OBO, actually I think I'm in love withit. Ohh my god - I'm in love!
But I have the same problem - the fix no. 1 for me was Clean Master and Battery Doctor. I start the cleaning process, and stop all other applications before I start Simcity.
Ohh **** did I just said Simcity! Okay wtf, yes i'm 31 years old, I play Simcity and I'm proud of it...
Fix no.2: have your phone in the hands so it can breath, and not on the couch / bed so the hot air can't escape
I don't know anything about flash, kennel, root and what you young beautiful people call it.
Last but not least, I thank God and myself everyday for switching from iPhone to the best phone ever - The amazing OnePlus One.
Hope the 2 fix can help some.
I was looking at the Shield Tablet for the following purposes:
1. Watching anime via MX Player
2. Reading light novels
3. general note taking via bluetooth keyboard
Would it be okay for these things?
Yes.
I have done all except use a BT keyboard. I do use BT earbuds and have no trouble.
How is the battery life on the shield tablet?

If you are only going to be using it for those things the battery life will be great. This is the best tablet on the market right now.

Does the shield tablet only have bad battery life if you are using gamestream? or are there other things that would kill its battery life?

Graphic intensive games and apps deplete the battery at a fast rate. Also, it gets heated up quite easily.

The battery does die quickly when you are playing some of the more graphical games, or even poorly optimized non graphical games.. But I have not had the tablet get anywhere near hot on me, even after playing it in console mode hooked to a big screen and then pulling it off and playing it for another hour or so it has not gotten hot on me. Granted I am comparing this to every other device I have owned which is quite a few... This one actually stays the coolest out of any I have used at this point since we went to quad core.

I have tried the tegra 4 exclusive games and it does get hot for me. Try Half-life 2, Trine 2, Horn or Portal and see the device getting pushed to its limits within minutes.

I have Trine 2 and Portal and played them quite a bit with no heat issues..
Could this issue be kernel specific? Or did Nvidia make different batches of slightly different hardware that we are not aware of? I'm unable to find a reason to this.
How's reading texts on this device? Like is the screen too small to pay attention to consistently? I plan on reading pdf textbooks to be specific, I'm really leaning towards this device against the Nexus 9 but not 100% sure yet as the screen might be too small.

Its great for reading. I'm coming from 720p devices. Compared to the 2012 N7 and original Note 10.1 its much sharper. Comfortable weight for reading too.
Hello guys. Someone who tried the konabess App on the s22 with snapdragon 8 gen 1? Is it possible to undervolt this thing a bit to lower the heat output? Its hot here in germany (28° Celsius) and the phone become very hot (cpu 50-65°C) just with Surfing the Samsung browser... So looking for a way to tame it a bit.

i hope not trashy fb, intagram, snap,twitter apps which wakes up your screen & modem every 10 seconds to show you what your friends eat in restorants? make debloat

The snapdragon even more because this year its an overclocked exynos... Yes other Modem ki processor.... But same cores... Samsungs 4nm is bad....

25C is hot? I've been to Germany, that's normal summer weather. That's 77F which is the average year round temp where I live.

I made some underclocking by EX Kernel Manager app (cluster 2 max freq 1555, cluster 3 max freq 1843, all clusters regulator is shedutil instead of walt, gpu max freq is 599). As can i say, konabess made simmilar procedure, but by patching boot image, so may be my reaults can answer your question. In my place also in this summer temperature rises to 28-35 celsius, before changing cpu settings phone was sometimes warm when i use it at sunlight, now it less hot and live longer (approx 6hrs of screen with using from 85% to 15%, but for battery life i also put to sleep some apps in settings). At antutu indoor phone is heated up to 34 celsius (before underclocking it was up to 39 celsius). In ui, browsing and camera i cant catch any lag or stutter with these cpu setting about a month so i think it very stable. But in straight sunlight phone still can heated to 45-50 celsius, better not use it in straight sunlight for long

You do realize that body temp is 37C...right. It gets hotter than 25C just by being in your pocket. It isn't outside temperatures causing your problem, it's the app your using.

Which app? My phone is mostly debloated. Only Apps i have installed beside the apps the phones comes with are Youtube and WhatsApp. No social Media ****. Please dont comment if you havent a clue what are you talking about. I had many phones in my live (switching a good 6-12 months cause its a Hobby) rooted every phone till the s21u and the s22u and no phone was as hot as this from normal task (browsing with the Samsung browser) so please stop fanboying. It isnt hot like you cant hold it anymore but it could be cooler so im looking for ways to tweak it a bit cause i like tweaking (cause of this reason i debloat my phone, tweak settings i dont use....)

You specifically mentioned the konabess app. The temp you stated, 25C, is well within the S22 Ultra's operating specs. The normal operating temp for the S22 Ultra is 0-35C.

Mate the Ambient temp. The cpu itself is 40-50 then... 25would be nice and cool...
One or more of your apps is using more power than they should. You're going to have to figure out which.
I haven't rooted or debloated. I have social media apps installed and running. I was at the Blue Angels airshow last weekend. Even being on a hot tarmac with no shade it was working fine shooting video and photos with no overheating or stuttering. It was around 31-32C in direct sunlight the whole time.
Ive already factory resetet the phone. There isnt app. Then u are using the amazing snapdragon 8 gen 2 prototyp s23u from Samsung. The 8gen 1 is a hothead. Its confirmed. 31-32°C cpu temp in direct sunlight is impossible. Even the battery is a bit hotter then....
