How hot is hot?

Seeing as how we don't haves cpu temp monitor, can someone enlighten me on what is considered to hot? At what point should I get worried?

Not sure, playing riptide for an hour at 1.6 highest i've seen the xoom get was 42C.

So today..... I woke up and my Xoom was under a pillow. It was AMAZINGLY hot, checking the battery temp was over 150F and the screen wouldn't power on (overclocked to 1.6). EDIT: Check the battery temp after it powered on.....
I did a power + Vol up to restart and it turns out the battery had no charge, charged it up and its working fine now. Still cant believe it got that hot though..... Only time will tell how it works in the future but I may have just done a really sound heat test?!
Hopefully not too sad of a day in the life of my Xoom!

My CPUMaster widget displays cpu temp. You can set a temperature profile which can reduce clock speed if the temp reaches a pre-determined level.

Isnt there a recommended temp somewhere like spec sheet or is that only ambient.. Come to think i guess it is

I have done alot of reading on this subject and could fill a whole page on explaining it, here is the short version. I am a power user and oc to 1.6, have my xoom in a enclosed case (no ventilation) and I have to work very hard to get my temp to 98. F. If you are seeing temps 98+ temps without heavy, heavy use then there may be a problem somewhere.

So I read on "Manga watcher" app alot and I believe recently my device heat up extreamly everytime I use the app, it sometimes reaches 108F but often it doeasnt reach more than 106F. Is this a problem other then that my hands get warm when holding it? (thank god I bought the keyboard)

Is your tab overclocked or do you use an overclocking kernel?

No, it is normal under a heavy load. The reason that you feel warm is because the back of your device is aluminum which is a great material for heat sink or heat transfer. It is a good thing that heat is not building up a round the CPU and GPU :good:

Does reading on Manga Watcher constitute a heavy load? I don't know the app, but reading should not heat up the tab like that.
I would investigate further.

Hehe, just reading Manga Watcher is not a heavy load. However, if another 38 third party apps actively running at the same time that you can not kill excluded system apps. I think that it is on the heavy side. Those information that I got from another post from this person right below this post. I have a few free games that constantly upload and download advertisements in my notification bar. I hate that but it is free. Maybe I am wrong, just try to help.

Well it only over heats when i use the manga watcher app so it has to be a connection, and I watch alot of youtube and movies with my device. Oh well as long as it doesnt dmg the cpu or anything i can live with it.

Probably heating up as the GPU is being used for rendering and is in overdrive..? Is it the top left corner? If so it's the GPU.

Yep and I'll wager it's the GPU usage that is heating it up.

The heat dont emit from any particular space and i dont use any overclocking

Oh, only 42ºC? That's not overheating..... That's actually fairly normal for any active CPU/GPU (For an active GPU it's actually rather cold.). I wish my GPU in my laptop stayed at 42ºC.....
The reason it feel so hot is because the device's case is metal. Metal transfers heat exceptionally well.
No, video players don't cause a heat increase for me either, not even after 15 hours of 1080p LOTR Bluray. But anything by Kairosoft turns my tab into a heater.

Well at 108F the device is warning me its overheating. I use battery booster lite to get the information.

Most definitely not over heating at 42 degrees c, the device shuts down at over 80 degrees I believe. I've seen mine get as hot as 60 degrees which is warm.

Okay well if 42c is normal then i am really glad i bought the keyboard thx everyone!

[Q] Nexus 5 gets hot

Hey guys, Im new to XDA but i have a quick question for all nexus 5 owners. Okay i was just wondering if anyone else's Nexus 5 gets hot. I remember my nexus 4 would get so hot i couldn't touch it. I haven't had that kind of heat from my nexus 5, but it is there and i do notice it. It gets hot near the camera on the back, and it gets hot on the front at the top of the screen. I have a CPU temp monitor running on my device to check if my device is running to warm. I found it averages/hovers around 50 degrees celsius. When i open chrome and do some light browsing it goes up to 60 degrees. So my question is.. Is anyone else noticing their phone gets hot? And does anyone have a cpu temp monitor running and could you let me know how hot your phone is running at?

Mine gets hot after a fair amount of time of gaming. Nothing terribly uncomfortable, but noticeable nonetheless.

Yeah mine is warm after just 5 minutes of normal usage non-gaming situations. Not hot but warm. Its starts to get hot to the touch after 15 minutes of heavy usage (ie. Browsing, gaming, etc) . I don't know if this is worth calling Google about and having them replace it, or is everyone's phone like this and I just need to get used to it?

I gotta stop reading on this forum the more more I read about this phone its make me not want it does all the things my Galaxy Nexus does. too not while browsing the internet. Low speaker volume. No flash. Questionable battery life. Might go iPhone...smh

Chrome is the problem. Its resource heavy for no ****ing reason.
I've been using chrome and my phone doesn't work hard at all with the same amount of browsing and tabs I always have open.
So its not the phone. You can expect it to get warm when doing CPU intensive stuff. Gaming would be it. But not hot.

guess what. youre using a 2,3ghz quad core device, ots gonna get hot when you use it. and itll cool down quick when you arent using it. thats how its supposed to be, thats how it works.

Okay i think it might be chrome as well. When playing temple run, my device only got to 58 celsius. But when browsing on chrome my device went up to 68 celsius. So now I'm thinking its just chrome?

As the other person stated - Chrome is a resource hog and definitely is part of it. Fully utilizing Google Now with the voice search activated (*okay Google*) can definitely do it. Try Chrome Beta, it's much better.

Does it get too hot to the point it won't charge? That what pisses me off most about my g-nex

i think its normal for the 'warm' touch at the back, it doesn't get quite as hot as the nexus4 becuase of the glass backing
i use tempMonitor app, i get around 47c cpu temp when its warm
im running r12 franco kernel UVing to 920mV at 1.95max ghz

Im using TempMonitor as well. When under normal circumstances (i.e. texting, calling, etc) my phone is running at 45 celsius. But it gets hot as soon as i go online or play a game for like 3-5 minutes. Im sure it must be chrome then. I understand the gaming part and how the processor works, but i didn't realize chrome was that bad. Ill try chrome beta. Anyone else know what temperature there cpu'c are running at?

my cpu is anywhere between 0C and 89C, depending what im doing with the phone. its normal to get hot, especially when doing something taxing. itll get hot, but itll cool down fast when the work is done. thats how its supposed to work. anyone complaining that device cpu temp is hot at 65C just doesnt know any better.

Lol well thats why I was asking and looking through the forums on XDA because I've never experienced a hot phone before. Im coming from the moto x which never got above 40C. That phone wasn't a snapdragon 800 though. I just wanted opinions of if it was just my phone or if everyones phone was like this. And if not should i send it in for replacement.

I know that this is BS because my note 3 which has the exact same processor never goes above 38-39 degrees Celsius even if I'm gaming for over an hour. If you think 89C is normal you're crazy.

what i see in this statement is pure ignorance. human body temperature is 37C, youre telling me that your cpu NEVER goes more than 1-2C over human body temp, even while gaming? do you live in the antarctic?
your only saving grace will be if you meant battery temperature, not cpu temperature. 39-40C would be normal then.

It's very easy to get wrong temperature readings from sensors btw. Trying to find a good app that reads them properly is not.
Parts of the phone warm up quickly but luckily the bottom bezel area does not.

[Q] Serious Nexus 5 overheating problem

Hello. I'm new with the account here, but been reading this forum for years.
I'm creating this thread because my new Nexus 5 (which I have for 20 days now) is overheating more than a normal mobile device should.
When i bought it, it had 4.4.4 Kit kat android, and I had that one for about 5 days, and in that time, I didn't notice any overheating, or maybe didn't pay attention, can't remember really.
But after installing official Lollipop 5.0.1, the device is heating pretty good even when browsing internet for 5 minutes, at about 30-40% brightness.
**** Please tell me if some of your devices are acting the same, and is it worth a try to install back an older android to try if it will stop overheating, or my device may be faulty and should I take it back for another one (or maybe switch to LG G2) ?
Because I'm still unable to post image links, i will write it down:
- Ambient temperature: 23 degrees Celsius
- The temperature sensor is taped on the back side, at the side of camera, this is where it overheats most. (even if not using camera)
- Phone temp after staying on standby with screen off: 28 C (it's not warm but it is warmer than desk which it is sitting on)
- After staying idle on home screen with screen on for 10 minutes (50% brightness): 30.5 C
- After chatting on Messenger for 10 minutes: 34.3 C (feels warm)
- After recording video for 4 minutes: 41 Celsius!!! (almost uncomfortably hot in the whole upper half of the phone, both the back side and the screen)
- After 15 minutes letting it cool down, with screen off of course, it is 38 C (still hot to touch), and it stays like that untill I reboot the phone, then it cools down.
The test took about 50 minutes, and after that, battery was drained for about 25%.
-While charging, the phone does not overheat, just gets a little warm which is OK. (haven't tried wireless charging)
P.S. I don't play games on the phone...
Please act quick in case I should return the phone...

the only time my phone gets hot is when im intensively doing a lot of things..
for example.. im playing ingress, have tether ON, and my two sons are using their tablets connected to my phone playing ingress too..
but if i turn off the game and turn off tether, it cools down..
to me it sounds u have something intesively using your CPU and perhaps GPS and other radios.
hold power button.. when PWR OFF shows, long press it and reboot into SAFE MODE...
use the phone for a bit and see if it gets warm... this should tell you if its apps installed.

I only used wifi, no tethering, no GPS, 3G, NFC or any other radios, cell signal is good so phone is not searching for it.
- In safe mode, it still gets warm when using camera. When browsing internet and watching images in google search, also but just mild warm..
- But after sitting and thinking, I've found a problem! After recording with camera and leaving it to cool down, it didn't cool down because it had to make an effort to upload that 5 min video on Google drive via Auto backup!
After turning the Auto-backup off, it is now much cooler!
I will post tomorrow with the results, if something changes...

First of all, "warm" doesn't mean anything.
Battery temperature does not mean much either, as the CPU is what generates the most heat.
There is a battery temperature throttle that reduces the CPU frequency, but it is almost entirely pointless as the CPU will always reach it's own throttle temperatures MUCH, MUCH earlier than the battery will. The CPU starts throttling at 65C CPU temp (NOT battery temp), and shuts itself down at about 105C CPU temp. Unless your battery somehow reaches a batterytemp of 70C+ (nearly impossible because the CPU will always hit it's throttle first), then I would never even take it into any sort of consideration unless you have a physical battery defect.
Using the camera generates heat since it's CPU and power intensive.
Using the phone in general will generate heat.
Keep in mind that mobile devices are passively cooled, not actively cooled with a fan/liquid.
Not sure what you're so worried about.

I was just worried a bit because all of my previous phones weren't getting this warm (hot), but also never had a multi-core processor in phone eather, maybe that's the reason why I never experienced this before.
Battery temp (measured with app) gets up to 40-42 degrees Celsius, while the phone case gets up to 41 when recording video. Of course that temp won't damage the device, I'm not worried about the processor, but that temp is degrading battery life, in long term.
And about the brightness, phone is not meant to be used at lowest brightness all the time, so that shouldn't be an excuse for high temps. Just sayin'...

The only thing that sounded odd was how it wasn't cooling down until you rebooted, but it sounds like you figured that out with the automatic upload setting.
41-42c battery temp can be normal after prolonged usage, though personally I usually see that after a short gaming session. My brightness is around 40% and high brightness will cause extra heat.
Otherwise the phone is very thin so you can feel the stacked SoC and RAM heat up through the skin fairly easily, right around the camera area as you mentioned.
I think each device and CPU is slightly different and can vary by a few degrees under load as well.

Your temperatures are fine and you shouldn't worry about it. It's average for a Nexus 5, and there are throttles/shutdown temps anyways, for both the battery and CPU. I've had mine for a year and there hasn't been any sort of issue, normal usage should be negligible to the condition of the battery.

CPU Temperature

I’m looking for the CPU temp in Galaxy S7.
Anybody know what are the values in green and red box in the pic attached signify?
This pic is from AIDA64/CPUZ

The red must be CPU cores, or at least related to that. Have no idea about the green one.

Wherever I see in the forums people only talk about the value in green box and they think that device is relatively cooler even under heavy load. But gotta say man the device heats up worse than my G4 even in minor load when referring to the values in the red box as you said. I wanna know is there something up with my device alone. What does you CPU Temp. reading after about 15 mins of heavy game session like with 'NFS No Limits' in your device in AIDA64? PLease post a screenshot

I don't play games on the phone. I tried a few just to make sure the phone is OK when gaming but in 5 minutes I got bored.
My phone gets hot, 75 Celsius when updating several apps, or right after an OTA.
I think this is normal, as I changed the first phone ( display issue ) and both reached the same temperatures in similar situations.

Oh! Thanks for the reply. This is the first time using glass/metal phone, maybe that's why I'm very sensitive to this problem. Is that a S7(flat)? Never had seen anything above 60C.

Yes, simple s7, not edge.
One time got very hot in my pocket, for no apparent reason.
But in battery stats I noticed that Google services percentages increased from 6 to 16, in about 20 minutes. This happens also on g4, about once or twice a week. It lasts from 10 minutes to a half hour, or I restart the phone and no more issues for a while.
It's hard to catch the s7 above 70 Celsius, I guess the cooling system does it's job really fast. We need an app to monitor and record temperature changes in the background. The only one I know about is CPU temp, but is not showing real CPU temperatures, it's fake.

Got the same situation (temp around 65-70 degrees) especially when updating apps by play store. Its getting hot on the back near the camera. But when updating is done temperatures are very fast dropping to 30-40 degrees. I think it's normal for this kind of device, made from glass and metal. Would be greatful for more observations from you guys. Cheers.

Yeah, Most app in the place store aren't able to read the actual temperature from the S7. Maximum I've seen with those are 38C in ~20 min session of gaming. As I said haven't seen S7 anywhere near 70C but near 61C in AIDA64 but after ~20 min session of gaming. It does take about 5 mins to completely cool down. Don't know it's normal. Is it!?

As you can see from all the below linked videos, the temperature never crosses 40C in any testing under heavy load. But how can we get 60C, 70C and all. They are even saying device isn't much hot. How is that even posssible?

I have no idea what and how they tested, the fact is that mine got very hot a few times. I only check temps when I feel the phone hot, and that was only when updating some apps, right after the OTA restart.
The temps from a gun are going to be lower than the core sensor reading. Always.
Is this gun any good for external testing ? I almost bought it

Seems like a local item. May not give you accurate readings but it's up to you. If you want a good one try Amazon.

But in battery stats I noticed that Google services percentages increased from 6 to 16, in about 20 minutes. This happens also on g4, about once or twice a week. It lasts from 10 minutes to a half hour, or I restart the phone and no more issues for a while.
It's hard to catch the s7 above 70 Celsius, I guess the cooling system does it's job really fast. We need an app to monitor and record temperature changes in the background. The only one I know about is CPU temp, but is not showing real CPU temperatures, it's fake.

Here are something based on my recent tests and findings,
The problem is when the device is under heavy load(NFS No Limits game). therm_zoneX values goes upto 61C, which I don't care if the device is still not much hot to hold in hand but it isn't. Compared to my LG G4 it gets hot soon for the same amount of load based on my tests. And makes me unpleasant of the fact that the I can't enjoy the amazing performance of gaming in this phone not even longer when compared to the HTC & LG phones I had. Even simple tasks like switching between Whatsapp and Tapatalk in the background for almost 5 min made the device unusually warm while there isn't anything else heavy running in the background. All these is considering the fact that my room temperature isn't very hot. What is your opinion?
I think the below attached images(4) will help you understand it better on the temp. variations on various tasks and where do I feel it warm/hot. I strongly believe it's unusual based on my experience in previous 5 years with various devices. Do you observe something similar. Please have a look.
PS: The NFS No Limits temp. readings were similar to someone who posted in the different thread.

Is 34°C on average/light use good?
