Well, I guess it's pretty normal if a phone gets hot while playing hardcore games.
But is it supposed to get this hot while playing games? Sometimes, just by playing Plants Vs. Zombies 2, the phone gets really hot (hotter on the camera part of the phone) that makes it unplayable due to the hotness that makes the camera part untouchable (or I'll get hurt)
I'm asking if this is normal, and if it happens to you guys.

Not to be rude but does it really get that hot that you feel like you'll get hurt? I've played games before and the phone has gotten warm like all other phones I've ever owned but hot enough to "hurt me" I haven't noticed.
What I can say is that it's possible that the software (either CM11s ROM or the game you're playing) isn't fully optimized to run on the OPO so it may have the processor working extra hard when it shouldn't have to.
Remember we're basically beta testing this lovely gem so a lot of bugs and such are to be expected since the phone isn't officially open to the public.

Well, first of all, it does not happen with just Plants Vs Zombies 2, I gave that game as an example because I usually play more-demanding games (not saying that pvz2 is not a demanding game, actually, i have no idea)
And answering your question, yes, it does get hot enough to hurt me, since the camera part is where it really gets hot, and there is a metal/plastic (yes i can't distinguish, i suck) piece on the camera that when it gets hot, is really untouchable, reaching the point where it hurts by touching it.

Depends on where you are too, if you're playing it outside and its really warm (it is Summer) then yeah.

Uhm, yes, it's truth that i'm using stock ROM, but i can assure that the current weather on my place has nothing to do with it getting really hot or not.

Yeah, my OPO gets this hot as well when I'm playing XCOM--the only "demanding" game I have on it at the moment. When I play other games, or during other normal usage it stays relatively cool. It gets a bit warm when charging, but that's expected from this charger.
I only just got it yesterday morning, so have only had limited testing time, but I'm getting the same thing with the front and back of the phone getting very hot, and the metal piece on the camera getting painfully hot (I have to watch how I hold it so I don't accidently touch it). I wasplaying XCOM for about an hour (the length of my train ride home) and it was hot pretty much from the start. After that hour the game finally crashed... I started it back up and within 5 min it crashed again. Guess that means it's getting throttled?
I'll be testing it again on my ride home later.

Yep, it does get very hot while playing, mainly around the camera area, doesnt really bother me, I guess that with a case you wouldnt even feel it.
What do you expect? This device, like any computing device, when put under CPU load is going to generate heat, it's computing 101 guys. This is why PC's have cooling fans.

Yeah, but when we decide to buy a high-end phone, with a really good GPU and CPU, we expect some kind of use to it. Since, in my opinion, having a good GPU, means that we can play high demanding games, and watch some cool high quality movies. I personally want this phone mainly to play those kind of games, that was actually the purpose of buying this phone: knowing that i can play any kind of game i throw at it.
So yeah, I agree that like any computing device, it's normal to get hot. But is it supposed to get so hot, even hurting the holder just because he's playing Plants Vs Zombies 2 for 10 minutes? This issue kinda beats the purpose of having a great GPU. It has a great GPU yeah, but what's the purpose of having it if it overheats the phone?

You bring up a lot of good points. Its just the way the phone's thermal driver operates. Alternatively, you can switch to a kernel that operates their thermal driver differently.
What is a thermal driver?
The generic thermal sysfs provides a set of interfaces for thermal zone devices (sensors) and thermal cooling devices (fan, processor...) to register with the thermal management solution and to be a part of it.

Basically its responsible for keeping your device nice and cool. Third party kernels such as: Franco, AK kernel, furnace and various custom ROM kernels have a modified thermal driver which can help with your phone overheating. For instance, using Franco Kernel he has his own thermal driver and also removes Qualcomm's mpdecision with his own hotplugging algorithm (powering cores 3/4 on or off depending on the load). You can also downclock your phone using these kernels (as well on stock) to lower the performance of your phone so that it does not heat up but also meet a balance of your phone not lagging with the lower clock.
Other thermal drivers include: Faux's Intellithermal and so forth.

Fair enough, but your high end CPU and GPU are performing as they should be, and because there is no physical cooling system on your phone it's going to get hot. Just because it's a high end device it doesn't mean it shouldn't get hot. The fact that it has such high spec components actually suggests that it'd heat up more than your average phone. By your logic, a high end gaming PC shouldn't heat up, but we know that isn't the case.

Adding to your point... a high end gaming laptop ... yeah a highend gaming PC heats up but its not as obvious, at least not for some people unless they're on air cooling and can hear the fans. A highend gaming laptop or any multimedia laptop playing games would heat up whatever surface its laying on as well as blowing out hot air.
My point still stands as stated before if OP doesn't want his phone to get "super" hot during games, flash a custom kernel, buy FKU and set up a per-app-mode, I can play PvZ 2 and can downclock it down to 1.5-1.7 (or even lower) without any lag. Just play around with it to get to that sweet spot where you find a balance between performance and battery as well as having your phone not heat up as much as stock.

Thanks for your reply and for presenting me some solutions, but I forgot to mention that I flashed Paranoid Android already, and from my knowledge, I think I read that it has Franco's Kernel already, so there's no need to flash it, i suppose (correct me if wrong)?
And even flashing that custom ROM, the problem still persists. So, I guess the only solution is to downclock the phone while playing those games.

I'm not too familiar with that, I know Franco is on PA's team but their kernel probably isn't 100% Franco Kernel. I could be wrong on this, I am not fully familiar with the situation but you might as well just flash Franco Kernel over it just so you're safe. If you have his FKU app then you can set Per-App-Mode as I mentioned previously.
Custom ROM isn't going to help your phone be "cooler" in temperature. Its on the kernel side of things. You'll need to downclock the phone accordingly on CPU frequency and GPU frequency. I was able to play 1.2-1.7GHz with 330 MHz on GPU. Don't take what I post for granted though, you'll need to sit down and try it out yourself to get the balance between temperature and performance.
At the end of the day, you'll also squeeze out more battery life playing the game too so thats always nice. Lowered temperatures and additional battery life? :victory:

Yes, mine gets too damn hot as well, to the point of burning my fingers, and I was not gaming, just browsing the internet while charging...
It even smells like "hot laptop" and even in the morning, after being charging and off all night, it was still hot...
Also, on my side pocket, I could feel it's heat on my leg while driving...

It's probably not a great idea to leave your phone on charge all night. You can't overcharge it, but the more time the battery spends at the peak voltage (4.2v) the faster it will degrade. Just a tip.

Have to check ao much time it will take to reach 100% and then switch it off via timer or such, but I never had this problem with other phones.
Also the OPO charger it's rated at 5V-2.1A and not even my tablets had such chargers...
The highest one I've it's the Nexus 7 one, that's rated at 5.2V-1.5A.
i recently getting extrene heat on my OnePlus to the point that i have to stop n reboot the phone for it to cool down. I have been playing brave frontier since the 1st firmware. The phone runs fine smooth. N suddenly it gets really hot in just 15min play of the game.
I have to stop n reboot the phone. Otherwise it still hot even though i quit the game without reboot. So reboot is a must.
The same thing happened to me today when I downloaded XCOM Enemy Within. I had the phone on "performance" mode. Its pretty much just stock everything, except I unlocked the bootloader, root, etc. I'm going to try and play in on "power save" mode tomorrow. (its late as hell, I should be asleep, I work in 5 hours.) anyway, if that doesn't work, then I will try installing the Franco kernel.

First I really love my OBO, actually I think I'm in love withit. Ohh my god - I'm in love!
But I have the same problem - the fix no. 1 for me was Clean Master and Battery Doctor. I start the cleaning process, and stop all other applications before I start Simcity.
Ohh **** did I just said Simcity! Okay wtf, yes i'm 31 years old, I play Simcity and I'm proud of it...
Fix no.2: have your phone in the hands so it can breath, and not on the couch / bed so the hot air can't escape
I don't know anything about flash, kennel, root and what you young beautiful people call it.
Last but not least, I thank God and myself everyday for switching from iPhone to the best phone ever - The amazing OnePlus One.

When playing a certain game, Card ace casino, my phone gets pretty hot, around 60-65 Celsius. My friend says her palm pre (not even an android device) also gets hot playing this game. Is 60-65 too hot (causing damage?) or is it okay? The phone feels pretty hot, but not so hot you can't touch it. The battery isn't as hot, so I don't think it's causing damage to the battery. I did just turn off force gpu rendering to see if it will help, as I heard the GPU causes many of the heat issues. At the moment, while plugged into the wall, it's idling at about 50 C
Is it actually a really graphics intensive game?? Hard to imagine a game like that would be. Maybe it's just horrendously written.
You can try downclocking your cpu/gpu to see if the game is still fluid to play. Or adb into it while playing to see what your loads are (or enable the overlay in the develop section).

That should be normal, thats the problem with phones with metal backs, metal absorbs heat. Underclocking should help a bit but theres nothing wrong with the phone. Happens to me all the time.

When my last sensation overheated to 75 it caused a bright spot in the screen (T-Mobile warrantied it). Don't want that to happen again. It is a very poorly written app, there aren't even hdpi graphics for it but its the only way I can play with my friend. I still reach temps of 60 while playing angry birds though, so it must just be the way the sensation is built.

As time goes on I think all HTC phones overeat and unless they do something about it the overheating will just become more prominent. Turning down your brightness usually helps FYI

To be honests, for me, the only way to get it noticebly hot is play Real Racing 3, Asphalt 8 or other heavy games.
Oh and using it for browsing, calls, facebook etc wile on charge heats it up too.
According my opinion its ( feels ) much cooler than N4, i had before.

The Nexus 5 definitely runs much cooler overall than the Nexus 4. These devices with their processors are made to heat up in an intense situation such as gaming. The device has an individual heat sync to soak that up and release it once the processing you've initiated has been lowered. Heating up is normal. The device will know when it's too hot to function, but that would take a lot to happen.
Slight warmth is nothing to be concerned about when browsing, or on a call. You should be concerned if there is no heat and you're playing a game for a few minutes or more.
Odds are high, your battery will die before the heat to the processor damages the phone. If you're finding it's difficult to hold the device because it's hot on your hands, I'd suggest setting it on a flat surface or get yourself a snug case. Mind you, a case will concentrate the heat and could potentially make it worse.

I just got 17-18k on antutu. Stock rom,stock kernel. With elementalx kernel i can reach 27k but it is still bad for elemental x. What's wrong with my phone ? i flashed factory image again nothing changed also i just noticed when i underclock my cpu to 1.7 ghz i'm getting 28k on antutu.

By letting the phone cool down before the benchmark, or use a custom kernel which raises or disables it.
The other thing is to not care about benchmarks...

I'm letting the phone cool down already. But it heats very fast during benchmark. I put it on fridge and i got 30k lol . Anyway there is nothing i can do.

Why do you care about benchmarks in the first place......
Putting your phone in the fridge, then getting an AMAZING score...does it make your day? Does showing it off make you happy? It's not what the phone is primarily designed for....it has much more useful functions, you know like internet, email, calling, gaming, photos...
More importantly...imagine benchmarks didn't exist for a moment. Did your phone actually feel slow before you did all these 'tests'??? Did you need to get 30k before you felt happy? Does a 'lower score' completely ruin the actual day to day user experience...

Firstly i don't need to tell you why i'm trying to get higher score but i will because you're talking too agresively with me without reason.I don't care about score. If every nexus 5 would be the same and get just 15k score including mine i would accept my phone with 15k. But others phones get higher and there is something wrong with mine. Hmm you're right. Do you know a good one ? I got 28.8k now with elemental x kernel with "Undervolt" feature. To be honest i don't know how much is normal for a nexus 5 device with this kernel.

Or any other activities which are causing it to get hot? This could be an app or hardware issue, both nothing to do with your benchmark. Are you comparing actual temperatures in degrees to identical phones doing exactly the same activities side by side, or does it just feel a bit warmer?
What I'm trying to say is your obsession with the score is causing you unnecessary stress...you are trying to fix something which does not need fixing.
So go back to the original thinking:
- Imagine scores don't exist

The first time run it i just wanted to see how my phone is powerful because i felt a little lag on asphalt 8 yesterday, so yes i wasn't expecting any issues but when i saw i got 17k i think that difference is just huge. I don't care if my device is same at gaming,multitasking with other nexus devices but benchmark makes me think it's not right.
In normal usage; yeah it is fast But I'm not sure my device is how it's supposed to be like this. But if you say it's normal and benchmark's not meaning anything i won't care. But there should be a reason all devices got different scores.

You don't need a score to see how powerful your phone is. It will breeze through most tasks just fine. "A little lag" on a graphically intense game is to be expected sometimes.
Gaming -> High CPU load -> heat -> thermal throttle -> bit of lag

Yes there is a reason we all get different scores, the same reason we all get different battery life. There are many variables, not least temperature and thermal throttling.
We have different number of apps installed and running at any one time, things syncing, mods, scripts, ROMs, kernels, all different. No two CPUs and Nexus 5s are exactly identical either. So therefore you get different 'scores'. Even if you had two stock factory reset phones side by side running the same test, they'll get different scores.
And just because your score is lower, it doesnt necessarily mean that something is wrong, or that your phone is always slow. It is just a nominal number from an app at a particular point in time. It still feels fast, and is fast...

Okey, i trust you. Since i just bought phone and didn't test it much really i won't test it or try to improve it for now.
The way a phone works doesn't lend itself well to benchmarks. That's why manufacturers like Samsung have traditionally "cheated" on benchmarks by ensuring maximum clock speeds are used when they detect a bench marking application.
If you want to maximize your benchmark scores you simply need to disable thermal throttling (or increase its limit) and also use optimized Dalvik copied from another device.

This. Thermal throttle is a way to keep your phone regulated into normal temperatures specified by the device manufacturer. However, it's generally safe to raise it a bit, mine is set to 85.

Got it a week and i noticed that it got very hot when i play. Just asking is this bad? Or doesnt it mather?
I just played a 3d racing game and the phone got hot. I was on 3g. (i think in flight mode it gets a lettle less hot) i played 10min racing and the phone was damn hot. Special at the camera.
I hope this wont hurt the phone cause i like gaming. Games like gta san. Cause i remember when i played gta san on my dads galaxy s3 and i played 1h30 gta san in flight mode and phone wasnt that hot like thr oneplus.
Its still hot the oneplus. Its 5min that i stoped playing and its still hot

use kernel manager like franco updater, trickster etc, create per app profile in it, apply undervolt to that game app

Havent rooted it. Just have cpu speed at 2ghz and profile balanced always forget to go in performance isnt realy needed any way. But just to ask wont it hurt the phone when i play. Saw somewhere that the cooling is different on this phone thats why it feel so hot but that it was just like any otherphone. But just want to be sure that it wont hurt my baby. Hihi

Reason why your phone's heating up quickly, is because it's running at full speed (which is overkill imo for games), by underclocking or using a custom kernel with a different governor, it'd help since the governors will turn off unneccessary cores on the cpu, and scale the cpu clock (the speed) accordingly.

it wont if you apply the undervolt properly. please read more on undervolting. its safe as long you dont go overboard.
different handphones have different hardware placements. take xperia Z series for an example, sony designed their z series with a heat tunneling. this is something that opo doesnt have. iinm, the heating while gaming is highly correlated with the way opo was designed. pretty much lesser space available for the heat to disseminate. and the cpu is place on the upper side of the device. try touching the rear camera while playing a graphic hungry game for at least 10 minutes. you will notice the heat.
but dont be alarmed, the device is properly designed to auto shutdown whenever it reaches an unsafe temperature.

okay cool yeah i dont see the point of 2.5ghz. for a phone i only wanted s801 for its higher clocked GPU thats all and cpu i mean 1.7 till 2ghz should do the jobs for games. okay will try to root it when my internet is working a bit better. (for redownloading all my apps. and a custom rom maybe)

okay cause i like gaming and when im bored i play gta san. and i noticed that when i turn on performance profile the game it runs much better.
for most games balanced profile is anough.
yeah i mostly feel heat in the top part. and the battery is just not heated up so i find it fine. if i realy play a game for a long time and i know it i always put phone is flight mode. so its gets less hot.

If so, does your device get very hot playing the game?
For me, back on Kitkat, the phone got pretty warm after about 10-15 mins of playing, it wasn't too bad. Now I'm on lollipop, after 10 mins of play, the phone was very hot, especially around the camera. (think that is where the CPU/GPU chipset is located) It was so hot I closed the game and turned off the phone for a few mins to cool down. I was scared I was going to fry my phone!
Anyone else having similar experiences with this game? Other games don't really heat the phone up, but MK does have very decent graphics!

More intense apps/games will obviously increase heat output. Though nowadays mobile chipsets much like desktop or laptop chipsets have thermal trips and controls that will throttle the component that is overheating. So I wouldn't actually worry too much about the possibility of frying your phone. (Unless you disabled the thermal trip on a kernel level)
Yeah, a game like MKX does a lot of CPU and GPU work and when you add the display, the device gets warm. It's nothing to worry over.

Confirmed with the same game and any other resource-expensive game. After 10/15 minutes the logcat gets spammed with temperature warnings (over 80 °C) and reboots to prevent damage.
I play the **** out of it, and yes after 20mins or so, it's pretty hot.

to reduce heating u must sacrifice ur little performance
flash a custom kernel
open kernel app n underclock ur cpu to 1.5ghz (dont go beyond it <1497mhz>) and keep ur gpu frequency to max @330 mhz (i would suggest keep it to 200mhz).
optionals
1. also do reduce cpu voltage atleast -30mV.
2. change the governer to silm or zzmove or any thing u like but not performance.
device get warm but doesnt goes to extreme heating .... little lags and glitches can be seen but its acceptable.

Well I'm glad I'm not alone in experiencing this. I guess ill just have to play in short bursts. I also play Marvel Contest of Champions and that is another 3D fighter but my phone can play that for half an hour without much heat up, MKX has much better graphics so it gets my phone toasty very quickly.
My device is very hot too and killing battery. When i play mk x i disable 2 cores from snayps.. It doesn't effect performance.

Just install ak put cpu speed to 1.3ghz max undervolt to 140 max for pvs 7(it may reboot at first but it will get stable for gaming with no heat) use build.prop and init.d tweak to keep it your One fast.
I play MKX and godfire with this settings with no lag at all.

I moved to the CM12.1 by SultanXDA and on his rom, the phone is underclocked to 2ghz and I've noticed the phone doesn't get as hot while playing games now which is great. Another added bonus of using that ROM, its very good!

Yes the device does get warm to hot depending upon your environment.
I have noticed that while playing the game in public(non-ac), it does get pretty heated.. whereas when you do play in an ac room or a room with adequate cool air circulation using fans, it doesnt heat up so much.
Also, the internet(cellular/wifi) being on plays a huge impact on if the device heats up or not.
Moreover, I noticed that it heats up more for graphically demanding games like MKX,NOVA3 and Modern Combat 5 and not so much while playing less demanding games like Golf Star,Asphalt,etc even though all these games are typical heavy games.
Like suggested by many above, try underclocking(powersaver mode) and undervolting. It works for me to some extent.
Had the same issue of lot of heat and huge battery drain, but kept playing for hours and then I gave up on it, because I love OPO's battery life and I don't want to ruin it
