So, being thrifty, I got my hands one one of these buggers, and want to trick it out.
I rooted it,
Installed openrecovery
Put a CM9 Rom on it. Couldn't get the Play store to install.
So, I popped on fj's CM7 rom, it was buggy as all get out.
Installed Chronos Ginger X, liked it, but couldn't get HDMI to work. Requires Motorola's gallery and the like, which I can't find.
Went to unlock the phone, couldn't because the SIM tools weren't in the rom...
Struggled for 3 days with RSDLite to install an SBF. Seriously some buggy software on Windows 7. Finally had to dig up an XP laptop and it's parts to get it to flash.
So, I'm looking for recommendations. I want the highest version possible, but CM9 is far too buggy. CM7 seems the way to go. So either FJfalcon's Kang, or Chronos X. Anyone know how to get HDMI working on Chronos X? Would the 2.1 Motorola apps work on 2.3.7 if I ripped them out with Titanium backup? I would ask in the dev thread but my count is pretty dismal.
Thanks in advance if anyone hears this quite plea in the dark.

As stated in the topic, I have the Milestone, from Cincinnati Bell.
The CM9 Rom I used was from this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1537122
Used the 07-Aug-2012 08:49 file as the last build posted was not documented.
When I couldn't get the playstore to load without immediately crashing (I did get it to install, just not work) I tried a modified one from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951275
that supposedly had a working playstore. But it too force closed.
I'm not dead set on CM9, though I would like it. I work with Gamemaker studio, so at least 2.2 is needed, CronosX covers most of that, just couldn't get the HDMI to work.
I very much appreciated your speedy reply

If you need HDMI, Mioze's CM6.3.7 (Froyo) is your best bet. Its also a great ROM in all aspects.

My apologies, I do not know if English is your native language. One reads text, they do not listen to it unassisted.
Additionally, I find using Google to search for mods and Roms that are on these forums to be redundant, as I can search here. I did indeed type "XT720 Mods" into Google, and other than this forum and Modmyandroid.com found nothing of value. All the links in modmyandroid are dead, or lead here. However, Basmatek understood my question and provided an answer that I am going to attempt.
I thank you both for your assistance.

is the camera not working on xt701 or won't it work if we flash it to our x720?
It's not working on XT701. Flashing it on the XT720 results in a bootloop.
that means no change to put CM6 to my xt720?
Nope. But the CM7-port is going very well. See the topic in this subforum. So we should have CM7 on our XT720 very soon.

I think it would be very hard to develop for a phone without having that specific model especially if your talking about ROM development.
The peolple that have develope floyo hands out to them im talking about out side developers none want to touch this phone same on them.

why don't you start developing yourself?
From what I can understand, you are expecting people who do not own this phone to spend hours/days/weeks of their time developing on this phone for free. If that's correct then you are making an absurd complaint.
It's absolutely amazing that we have people like Khal, Mioe7ae and others working on the XT720 like they do for no charge. It is semi-understandable in their case though since they have the XT720 and therefore do gain somewhat from their hard work (even so, it's still amazing what they do for us for free). To expect developers to give up their time to work on a phone they don't own for free (not to mention the fact that it's more difficult to develop on a phone you don't have like 3rdstring said) is just plain absurd. To say "shame on them" for not working on it -like you are entitled to have a team of slaves working 24/7 to make your phone better - is just downright disrespectful.
Forgive me if I've misunderstood what you're saying.
I fully agree to syrenz. It´s amazing what the guys here do for us!

Don't forget that the devs here are not payed for their work. They do this voluntarily. If I was a dev I really would think twice about creating a ROM for guys like you!
Whatever you say..
I didn't say I was a dev but I sure do appreciate the work done here by the devs and don't expect those without the handset to add to it.

There is indeed 2nd boot which the Defy uses to boot from another kernel. That's why they have that leaked 2.3 ROM and CM7 on the Defy. We could use that too. I already mentioned that a few times, but they just ignored that.
But I do really have a lot of respect for the guys that do development for our phone. Thanks a bunch, guys!

Every Defy ROM I've looked at seems to be 2nd-init from what I can tell. So, specifically, since Defy's CM7 is 2nd-init, there exists at least one 2nd-init ROM for Defy and I have logically negated your statement.
Nevermind. CliqXT doesn't check boot.img for signatures.
Second hand, but it sounds like the CLIQ/DEXT people have just figured out how to 2nd-boot with working radios. This was what reddit user Druuseph had to say about the announcement that CLIQ was now an officially supported CM7:
Druuseph 9 points 1 hour ago
The real news here that no one seems to be touching is the way in which they got it running. The Milestone team pioneered using kexec and init to boot into second kernels but it essentially turned your phone into an Android powered iPod touch; No radio access at all. Apparently the devs of the CM7 Cliq port used a second init after boot that allows the radio to load. CVPS caught wind of it and is going to apply this to the Droid X. If he can get it to work the DX might finally be brought into the fold.

So I can't quite tell if they are saying it's using a hybrid 2nd-init/2nd-boot or if it's just using 2nd-init. I'm researching this.
Edit: the boot.img the Cliq XT CM7 is being distributed with does not seem to contain Motorola signature blocks, so this looks promising...
I picked up a Mesmerize yesterday and was surprised to find it already running 2.3.4. I'm not sure if that's already a common thing on these, but coming from the Captivate world (still have it for personal use, the Mez is for work) it seemed very surprising.
Anyway, I definitely want to root this thing and get rid of the bloat; Is there a specific process for rooting these things with 2.3.4? I keep seeing stuff for Eclair and Froyo, but am unsure if GB uses the same Z4Root process or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Good luck.. there is NO development going on for this phone.

There doesn't appear to be any way for users to root GB on our phones at the moment. The only solution that I've found presented so far is to flash a pre-rooted ROM.

To the best of my knowledge, you basically have to flash in a rooted image - the older root exploits used apparently were finally patched in 2.3.

I've counted about 10 or so Gingerbread ROMs available for the Mesmerize, 2 AOSP and the rest TW-based. Roughly half have had some sort of activity within the month.

ya i'll have to disagree too, there are lots of TW and non-TW based roms out there, personally I use MIUI...honestly unless u have to root specifically for an application and don't want to use a custom rom rooting the stock rom is useless, since the mes has an unlocked bootloader you can just flash clockwork whenever you want and load whatever rom suits you.
Hi, I have noticed a ton of people curious about why AT&T people do not have ICS yet, so I thought I would answer that once and for all. I admit that I and others have gotten a little mad whenever people ask about this, but it seems they are not able to really find a clear answer, so here it is.
If you feel like this is well done, please sticky it at least until we get it all figured out.
I figure this would be best said i a Q and A type form.
Q: What is ICS, and why does everyone want it so bad?
ICS or "Ice Cream Sandwich" is android version 4.0.x. the next version, 4.1 Jellybean was just released as a slightly less important update, but ICS brought huge changes from Ginger Bread (2.3.x) the previous phone version (3.x HoneyComb was tablet only). ICS brings a slicker, darker, and better looking user interface, as well as many performance enhancements. Most of us want it more because it seems like we should than because it is actually that much better. That said it is still a great update, and most people will be happy to see it.
Click to collapse
Q: Why is it so hard to get ICS for our phone, while others have it even though it is not officially out?
The main reason is our locked bootloader. That means it is not possible to flash or boot a custom kernel unless it is signed with Motorola's key. That is obviously impossible.
Click to collapse
Q: What is a kernel?
the kernel is a major part of any operating system. you can think of it as a sort of layer between hardware and software. It is the part of an OS that communicates directly with a device's hardware. Android is based off the open source Linux kernel, meaning it is free for anybody to build and modify. However, Motorola has only released the source for the ME865, and partially for the MB865, meaning we can't really build a kernel anyways. Then of course, even if we could build one, we wouldn't be able to boot it with our locked bootloader.
ICS is not really complete without the newer kernel that goes with it

What is Kexec, and is there any way to unlock the bootloader
The fact that I grouped these together would probably lead you to correctly believe they are related. Lets start with the second half. Simply put, NO. I hate to say it, but there is very little hope of EVER unlocking our bootloader, unless Motorola decides to do something like HTC did and allow unlocking.
Kexec is a method of hot switching kernels while still booted. It is actually just a linux tool that you can use on a computer, but it has been built for android essentially allowing you to bypass the bootloader. Theoretically it would be an easy way to run custom kernels. Then why don't we? Well a few reasons. One, we can't really get one built to begin with, especially because, at least to my knowledge, jimbridgman is the only one who actually knows what he is doing with kernel building, and he is only half here now that he got his fany new SGS3. Two, it does not work great. I am not sure the latest version is working at all on our phone, and even if it did, only one processor comes up, meaning it is really slow.
Click to collapse
Q: What's the deal with these Droid 3 builds that supposedly boot?
Some people managed to build ICS for the droid 3 based of a 2.3.6 kernel. that means you can boot it on a stock GB kernel, and therefore you do not need to unlock the bootloader. Unfortunately that means it is not totally ICS, but it is still pretty good. Of course they are for a cdma phone, so that means no data, no calls, and no gps, making it kind of useless.
I am not going to give a link to them, but if you are really interested go search around. any of the Droid 3 AOKP and CM9 builds will boot just fine. Find more info in the dev section, but please don't start a thread asking about it.
We have been trying to port these to work for us, but that is proving more difficult than expected, and with ICS just around the corner, I don't want to put time into it. I do think it is possible, and if you are a dev looking to give it a shot, PM me and I will tell you all I know, and try to help out as much as I can.

Agreed, They actually run extremely well, but obviously I can't stick with them with no radio.
P.S. this is my new best thought for porting, might take some extra build.prop work too. It did not boot for me, but I think we should be able to get it to. Then it is just a question of whether or not the radio will work. there is way more in build.prop on that than I would think.

I think it may work because it really adds the cm9 stuff to our own files rather than add our files to it. maybe not the cleanest way, but it might just work.

I have tried this method along with every idea that popped in my head of things to alter after following this guide. I have a highly modified build prop that AOKP boots with that I replaced with a lot of our build prop but there are still some things missing as no luck yet
While ICS users enjoy Google Now, Why not make a port for the legacy Gingerbread and Froyo users? It isnt that hard, is it? This is XDA, come on guys!

There's no need for that mate. There are many stupid questions here, but calling someone stupid is just not necessary.
Wouldnt it need NFC as well?
My bad thinking of wallet...
Unfortunately Honeycomb and below is "dead" development, people are focused on doing more on ICS than anything.
When Eclair rolled out, development stopped on Cupcake and Donut, and now its quite hard to imagine someone still working on those old versions of Android. Well, looks like GB, HC, and Froyo is in that boat.
I suggest you get a new phone. (I need one too. I'm still stuck on gingerbread)

There was a Jellybean port to ARM6 devices tested on Galaxy Gio by some guy, Im sure we can make a Google Now port.
Well coming from a jelly beaned phone, you do need an arm7 and unfortunately, your phone doesn't have one. You can try porting it but it will come out with bugs.

OptimusLove,
This might make you feel better:

I think you would still need to get ICS on your device, but at least your ARM6 is being shown a little love.
I'm still holding out on a gingerbread port of it, though.
How to install Google Now on my rooted Tmobile Galaxy S2 ?
I'm having a T-mobile rooted Galaxy S2 running ICS custom ROM (Jedi Mind Trick V4). I wanted to install Google Now and I hope that is possible in my device. Can someone send me the link, where to look for it ?

I believe Google Now is JellyBean specific. However, it's up to the devs to have it in a flashable zip or apk format for ICS devices.

Yes, I agree Google Now is specifically for JB. But trying to find out if anyone has ported it to use with ICS.

Ewww...that's disgusting.
But as many people feel, I do not feel that someone will actually take the time to figure out how to do it. Do remember that the framework is VERY different. But I am not losing hope that someone....someone...will take the time and get this working. ICS is not as fast as GB on my phone. However, GNow is enough of a reason for my to flash ICS to my phone every few days.
(OG Evo 4G running Decks ICS - 7.09.12 build flashed with GNow)
So GNow is a ploy to get ppl to just buy new phones, that have ICS or better?
Well that's how I see it, the majority of ppl use gingerbread, why not cater to them gooooooooogle?? Its A shame they keep creating new os's like every year or so when phones last so much longer then that.
Offline dictation should of been available back back well there never should of been a connection dependent voice(voice search, dictation, voice anything from google) or w/e.
