not yet possible. the locked bootloader ****s up!
but cm7 was ported to xt701 that is similar to our xt720 and so it could be ported to our xt720 again maybe.

Except that you don't have a working camera then, which is why many of us bought this phone.
Anyways, I don't understand why it's taking so long for 2nd init to get working. Many Motorola-devices already have 2nd init to boot custom ROMS.

We already use 2nd-init on all of the Froyo ROMs. Maybe you mean 2nd-boot?
Sent from my XT720 using XDA Premium App
Yeah, maybe that's what I meant. They use that already on for example the Defy to boot custom kernels including Cynanogenmod.

is the camera not working on xt701 or won't it work if we flash it to our x720?
It's not working on XT701. Flashing it on the XT720 results in a bootloop.
that means no change to put CM6 to my xt720?
Nope. But the CM7-port is going very well. See the topic in this subforum. So we should have CM7 on our XT720 very soon.

I think it would be very hard to develop for a phone without having that specific model especially if your talking about ROM development.
The peolple that have develope floyo hands out to them im talking about out side developers none want to touch this phone same on them.
Sent from my XT720 using XDA Premium App
why don't you start developing yourself?
From what I can understand, you are expecting people who do not own this phone to spend hours/days/weeks of their time developing on this phone for free. If that's correct then you are making an absurd complaint.
It's absolutely amazing that we have people like Khal, Mioe7ae and others working on the XT720 like they do for no charge. It is semi-understandable in their case though since they have the XT720 and therefore do gain somewhat from their hard work (even so, it's still amazing what they do for us for free). To expect developers to give up their time to work on a phone they don't own for free (not to mention the fact that it's more difficult to develop on a phone you don't have like 3rdstring said) is just plain absurd. To say "shame on them" for not working on it -like you are entitled to have a team of slaves working 24/7 to make your phone better - is just downright disrespectful.
Forgive me if I've misunderstood what you're saying.
I fully agree to syrenz. It´s amazing what the guys here do for us!
I´m really impressed how people from all over the world can work together to create better software for our phone!
Thank you for this!

Bootloader locked...full stop..
I think we should be thankful that these guys here work on our phone in spite of the locked bootloader!
Don't forget that the devs here are not payed for their work. They do this voluntarily. If I was a dev I really would think twice about creating a ROM for guys like you!
Whatever you say..
I didn't say I was a dev but I sure do appreciate the work done here by the devs and don't expect those without the handset to add to it.

There is indeed 2nd boot which the Defy uses to boot from another kernel. That's why they have that leaked 2.3 ROM and CM7 on the Defy. We could use that too. I already mentioned that a few times, but they just ignored that.
But I do really have a lot of respect for the guys that do development for our phone. Thanks a bunch, guys!

Great! I think that's where the A853 has been stuck, too. Are you using XVilka's 2ndboot-ng?

As far i can get, mbm don't pass control of baseband to new kernel.. so problem... only in that momment.

Every Defy ROM I've looked at seems to be 2nd-init from what I can tell. So, specifically, since Defy's CM7 is 2nd-init, there exists at least one 2nd-init ROM for Defy and I have logically negated your statement.
Nevermind. CliqXT doesn't check boot.img for signatures.
Second hand, but it sounds like the CLIQ/DEXT people have just figured out how to 2nd-boot with working radios. This was what reddit user Druuseph had to say about the announcement that CLIQ was now an officially supported CM7:
Druuseph 9 points 1 hour ago
The real news here that no one seems to be touching is the way in which they got it running. The Milestone team pioneered using kexec and init to boot into second kernels but it essentially turned your phone into an Android powered iPod touch; No radio access at all. Apparently the devs of the CM7 Cliq port used a second init after boot that allows the radio to load. CVPS caught wind of it and is going to apply this to the Droid X. If he can get it to work the DX might finally be brought into the fold.

So I can't quite tell if they are saying it's using a hybrid 2nd-init/2nd-boot or if it's just using 2nd-init. I'm researching this.
Edit: the boot.img the Cliq XT CM7 is being distributed with does not seem to contain Motorola signature blocks, so this looks promising...

Ok, terminology nazi here:
2nd-init is what we already use.
2nd-boot only works without the radio (no phone).
I don't think there has been any success yet getting the radio working even on A853 where 2nd-boot was pioneered. Baring a miracle, bootloader unlock is most definitely desired.
Yes, I meant 2nd-boot. Thanks for correcting me
I get confused every time b/w 2nd-init and 2nd-boot. When if finally works, I probably won't be confused anymore
I don't see what's the big deal.Official Froyo.... whatever. I have fully working ROM with excellent preformance and fjkernal.
Go eat my shorts Motorola. And ty to Dexter, Khal, Mioze, Fj, reverendkjr and everybody else who are responsible for this.

If only J.Y.Daddy would also release his sources. I would start by comparing source code. Since ROMs have compiled source code, i cannot easily compare. I'll just make do with the xt720 source for now. Thanks!
J.Y. Daddy didn't compile. He did a binary port of nadlabak's (aka kabaldan) alpha preview CM9 for Milestone (A853): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445209 You can compare the original and ported versions to study what J.Y. Daddy changed.
Nadlabak's tree is at http://github.com/nadlabak. I don't think anyone's set up a CM9 tree for XT720.

Just unstuck myself using this: http://bbs.hiapk.com/thread-1242662-1-1.html and have replied to your PM. Thanks for all the support guys!
Before I flashed CM 9 for xt720, I flashed CM 9 for xt800w. It works almost all fine except for the camera of course.
@mchlbenner: sensors = proximity / compass / accelerometer ? Looks like they work for the xt800w, straight from the ROM itself. Maybe it's because the hardware used for the A853 is practically the same for the xt800w.
And the J.Y.Daddy uploaded ROMs for CM9 have their debug.sf.nobootanimation set to 0. So might as well for those who will test set this to 1 first.

Do a search... we already have done something similar, it is slow, and not worth it, since we don't have space on the internal storage to put the 2nd ROM, so it MUST go on the SDcard.
It was abandoned due to the fact that it was so slow it was unusable. Besides there are many of us that have been working to get CM7 and CM9 working from a port without success.... but you are more than welcome to jump in and lend a hand, we have a post in the dev section about it for aokp and CM9.

Do you mean as in a multi boot?
The Defy I had, I flashed a defy+ sbf too then plonked cm9 on, no 2nd rom/boot or such.
My understanding was that the purpose of 2nd init was to hijack the init process and allow to boot into boot manager.
I'm also guessing bootmanager would need to be built from source to suit the A2?
I've read a few of your posts mate, worked with Linus? Legend.
You will by far know more than I do these days, but I'll see what I can do to help.
First I'll deodex the ics leak I'm running and make a Cwm backup to upload. Not sure how useful it will be due to the kernel.
The U.S, Europe and Asia hardware is all different?
The one last thing I remember from defy was I had to use at&t baseband since telecom nz uses the same carrier frequency.
And ran the defy+ rom on old red lense ddfy without a single issue at defy+ stock clock freq

Yeah we used a util called safestrap that another dev and I patched to make it work on this phone that was originally from hashcode.
It allowed us to boot another ROM on say our SDcard, but again it still has to use our kernel due to the bootloader issue...
The only way around the bootloader as of now is by using kexec, and that only works with 1 CPU and can only load a "stock based" unsigned kernel, so the CM stuff is out.
We are working to get CM9 and or AOKP booting from a port on our phone using the stock GB kernel. There is a post on it in the dev section.
Yeah Linus is a Friend, a great guy and I can't say enough good things about him. I have not seen him since the last Linux world / Opensource world now as it is called.
Yeah you should jump in and join the frey, we can always use more help in here.
Well it wasn't hard to work out how to get a 2nd init style boot. (As in, blue light, press vol down, gets bootmenu)
Except bootmenu is garbled screen. I need to test more, and probably mod some of the scripts.

Installed Chronos Ginger X, liked it, but couldn't get HDMI to work. Requires Motorola's gallery and the like, which I can't find.
Went to unlock the phone, couldn't because the SIM tools weren't in the rom...
Struggled for 3 days with RSDLite to install an SBF. Seriously some buggy software on Windows 7. Finally had to dig up an XP laptop and it's parts to get it to flash.
So, I'm looking for recommendations. I want the highest version possible, but CM9 is far too buggy. CM7 seems the way to go. So either FJfalcon's Kang, or Chronos X. Anyone know how to get HDMI working on Chronos X? Would the 2.1 Motorola apps work on 2.3.7 if I ripped them out with Titanium backup? I would ask in the dev thread but my count is pretty dismal.
Thanks in advance if anyone hears this quite plea in the dark.

As stated in the topic, I have the Milestone, from Cincinnati Bell.
The CM9 Rom I used was from this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1537122
Used the 07-Aug-2012 08:49 file as the last build posted was not documented.
When I couldn't get the playstore to load without immediately crashing (I did get it to install, just not work) I tried a modified one from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1951275
that supposedly had a working playstore. But it too force closed.
I'm not dead set on CM9, though I would like it. I work with Gamemaker studio, so at least 2.2 is needed, CronosX covers most of that, just couldn't get the HDMI to work.
I very much appreciated your speedy reply
Google (xt720 mods) their are many mods that you can try.

So your recommendation is that instead of using any of the roms found on XDA, I instead google search XT720 Mods

If you need HDMI, Mioze's CM6.3.7 (Froyo) is your best bet. Its also a great ROM in all aspects.

Thank you. I will try it out. I don't necessarily need it, but I would like it. Any well constructed ROM 2.2 or above will do.

My apologies, I do not know if English is your native language. One reads text, they do not listen to it unassisted.
Additionally, I find using Google to search for mods and Roms that are on these forums to be redundant, as I can search here. I did indeed type "XT720 Mods" into Google, and other than this forum and Modmyandroid.com found nothing of value. All the links in modmyandroid are dead, or lead here. However, Basmatek understood my question and provided an answer that I am going to attempt.
I thank you both for your assistance.

This one look very interesting. I shall give it a try after my new sim card gets here.
