Waterproof skin + Wireless Charging = Win - Galaxy S 4 Accessories

This is a waterproof skin thing which wraps around your phone making it impervious to liquids.
Think of it as the good ol' condom trick which protect your gadgets from grit and water.
Now, since it is airtight, the usb charging port is blocked. Fret not! We have wireless charging capability on our phones.
I'll be getting some of these soon and report back.

Only thing I worry about is a 'boil in the bag' syndrome. It's going to get might toasty when charging if it's sealed.

I want to see this condom work. Not all claim of protection is equal.

Life proof cases? First and foremost, this phone costs roughly $700. The life proof cases cost a fraction and you trust them? So yeah... a moot point.
This isn't meant to be a party trick, its a pre-emptive protection. You're not supposed to dip it in water just for laughs. Even liquipel tells you not to use it as a bar trick.
Yeah, this solution does not apply to everyone. I myself found that I hardly need to use any of the ports. I'm still using a dedicated mp3 player so there's that.

Nice. If you have dual band wifi at home, the 5ghz would work wonders for your wireless file transfers.

Obviously life proof case gonna be much better than your so called "condom".
If it is mere a preemptive protection but not really "waterproof", I suggest you buy a condom directly. It is a joke to pay $5 for a leak "condom". I can give you half dozen.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Some people just aren't that progressive. The condom was an analogy. Look it up in the dictionary. A-N-A-L-O-G-Y.
This is an alternative. You can waterproof your cases with minimal bulk.

I think this case is meant to be a one time thing like a condom not being an actual condom.
For its price is not bad to pick up a few for the summer just in case you have plans to maybe get drunk at a pool party where it would come in handy.
The only thing about one time use is that like a condom, you're going to forget it when you need it.
Not bashing. I actually may pick up one. Never been the person who "needs" a life proof case but if i can get a really slim one I may start rolling around in puddles just because i can.

[Q] Recommendations for a solar charger?

Greetings my sensational mates.
Been looking into a decent solar charger for our sensation.
Once in a will I wander to the desert, which lowers the reception and force highest screen brightness, the battery dies pretty quick. I figured the desert sun could do something for me other than melt my guts.
Can any one recommend a decent solar charger?
Many thanks!

Does even those type of things exists for smartphones ?

You're better off getting Gatorade/Pedialyte and soaking an onion in it then plugging your phone into that, because I'm not entirely sure that technology exists for the average consumer just yet. If you want to use a phone in the desert, then buy a satellite phone. That will run you around 1,500 USD, but it's guaranteed to work.
They do exist.. here's an example:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Solar-mobil...y-Samsung-Nokia-Mp3-Mp4-Cameras-/261059718304
Actually there are many such devices. That's why I opened this issue - I wish to get recommendations from owners.
well i made my own i used the solar panels from garden lights then i tested them with a volt meter to see how much each one would put out at full pelt. to find out that i put them underneath a lamp in a dark room. once i had that worked out i soldered them together and fixed it up to a female usb port. it sure as hell isnt pretty but it works (well, when scotland decides it wants to be sunny )
here you go, my master piece
ohh thank goodness ..i thought you are talking about solar charger app :silly:
btw the app is cool..i mean atleast the comments/reviews are ..look here
Hi,
a fried of mine wanted to buy a solar charger for a big journey as well.
So I read lots of tests and comparesions.
Just to charge your phone, you can use a "Aurora 4 Outdoor Solar" für about 99€.
It can be folded and should charge the battery in about 2 hours.
Seems to me the best one for this price.

Well... I was not aware of all those "charging" apps out there, or I would have made it more clear that I'm looking for a charger which has some mass
Thanks TriTopaz, that looks like a pretty good one!
Somewhat out of my budget though..
Since you've made that research already - do you happen to remember anything, perhaps less powerful, but more wallet friendly?

To hell with wireless, will it fit Galaxy S 3 docks?

The Nexus orb may or may not ever come out, if it does it wont be for many months and the other options are either horribly ugly, gigantic, or dont work right, so screw it. Google's wireless charging idea looks to have been a waste of time, money, and made the phone thicker and heavier than it could have been.
There are a ton of Galaxy S 3 docks that look decent and dont take up a lot of space. Anyone know if the Nexus will fit without much stress on the USB connection (since the S3 is slightly thinner the plug would be closer to the edge)?
I have the official Samsung dock for the att galaxy s2 and the nexus slides in perfect, and I mean perfectly

Just b/c the official Google charging orb isn't out doesn't mean it's a waste. Many of us are doing just fine using 3rd party wireless charging options.

My Energizer Qi mat charges VERY fast - faster than a wired connection, actually (personal experience). Clearly you don't have a Qi charger.
It's much faster and MUCH easier than orientating a micro USB and fiddling with plugging it in - especially in the dark.
Just lay it down in the dark and your head hits the pillow. It's not a "cool" gimmick. It's magical.

Liquipel is a gimmick when used on cell phones. It's borderline being a scam actually.
The technology is impressive and it has merits but these demos of cell phones being dunked are very deceiving, let me explain why...
First off a little history with other gimmicks. Long time ago probably before many around here were kicking they used to demo these "amazing" knives under differing brands (Ginsu probably the most familiar). They would do crazy things with them at the displays in malls, fairs, etc. One was cutting deep grooves in the head of a hammer. People would reach for their wallet in droves to buy after seeing that. I mean a knife that could cut through a hammer? Problem is no one ever really scrutinized and realized the "hammer" had a head made of lead. Lead is very soft and any iron or ss blade will cut it with little dulling compared to say trying that on an Estwing. BTW if you did try this with a real hammer (I did!) you'd find your blade about as ruined as if you took a chainsaw to a steel door.
So what does this have to do with Liquipel and their demos? Simple. They never tell you what the "water" they use really is. I'm willing to bet it's distilled water with a very low conductivity. Others that have this treatment done to their devices are reporting their device stops working after a day or two! Of course, you're using tap water which has far more minerals and therefore much higher conductivity.
It gets even worse! The average spill (beer, soda pop, fruit juice, etc.) not only is much more conductive but can be acidic, leave sticky residues which are often highly hygroscopic (which means they will absorb moisture from the air when it gets humid, becoming active again), and this is just bad to have in your phone!
Toilet swims? Don't even ask!
Saltwater which a device would encounter if offshore fishing or beach going would probably be the worst thing ever that could happen to your phone.
Liquipel can keep the fluid from wetting your treated parts but it cannot keep it OUT of the chassis/enclosure. That's where this is flawed. Once you have fluid penetration (no sick jokes, please!) your device is contaminated and will never be the same. If you want a waterproof or water resistant device you must keep the water out, PERIOD! This requires a completely different strategy starting with the chassis and any physical interface that must connect from the outside to in. Real solutions are never pretty or compact. If you eliminated the headphone jack and USB port relying on wireless charging and bt/wifi for sound, etc. it would be possible. The buttons would be gasketed like waterproof wristwatches, for example. The speaker and mic would be a challenge depending on the water (depth) rating. A meter rating would be no real issue but 100 meters would!
Finally, getting your device treated gives you a false sense of security! There is nothing worse than believing you're OK when in fact you won't be as careful and allowing your device to get dunked!

Regarding Active - it will have a smaller screen, and is only water resistant - highlighting this as I believe many people think it is also shock/impact proof.
Seidio is developing their Obex for SGS4, I will check it out once it is released, gives water and impact resistance.
http://www.seidioonline.com/samsung-galaxy-s4-obex-case-holster-black-p/bd2-hwssgs4-bk.htm
Although it is a niche product, adds too much bulk, and worsens the mic and speaker quality.
It's always about compromise. TBH if you're the active type that wants to keep your phone working the easiest way is to put it in the equivalent of a storm case. Otter makes one that's in the ATT stores. TBH that's the only way I would carry my phone to the beach. Sand gets into everything and wrecks it - fast!
I have actually seen folks at the beach using a macbook!
Don't worry, it won't be long before connectivity will be a part of life, thought reading, embedded devices, and anti tinfoil hat tech!

According to some comments in the video, this phone is also only a dual core S4 Plus MSM8960, which is even further of a disappointment.
well you could always just but a waterproof S4 here https://www.liquipel.com/

That should come with suspenders to hold your pants up once you pocket it.
I'm going to keep my eyes on this, and order some suspenders or a utility belt to go with it
60 dollars seems steep. You could get an external anker battery with 12k mah for like 20 bucks and you wouldn't sacrifice size...these batteries seemed worth back then but with the cheap availability of power banks they seem irrelevant now.
I'll still keep an eye out though because it would be pretty sweet.

Why would you need it on a higher technology device such as the Galaxy Note 4?.... I may want an external battery pack that's compatible with Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 spec (Samsung's adaptive quick charge).
If I'm to spend $60.00 on a big heavy battery of a mediocre life warranty, I would rather my money spent on a battery I can use for other things such as to charge my Bluetooth Headphones
not to mention the case is an awful way to make an expensive $900 smartphone look as if you pulled it from a cereal box!
I'm using Battery Guru https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xiam.snapdragon.app
and my Battery life is PHENOMENAL!!! SO I WOULD THINK TWICE ON THIS EXPENSE?.. as the previous post of above said would be a smarter choice to get an external battery.
I will have to keep and eye out for this. I had one for my note 2, note 3 and s4. Use then all when I go on trips and am away from a charging station. This looks nice. Will have to see how this stacks up with the other brands and see if they sell them for a deal.
I had a Zerolemon for my S4, battery life was phenomenal with it! But it made the phone so huge and heavy, my arm ached when I talked on the phone for more than 10 minutes. I can only imagine how big the Note 4 will be with such a battery... and it's scary!!

Everyone has their opinion. Some are surprisingly bold in their urging theirs on others.
Nobody really needs it. After all it already has a battery that works. It's simply a matter of preference.
Some would rather not have to bother with lugging around another external battery pack and it's charger and trying to find a way to leave it connected in their pocket or holster while they go about their busy day from place to place hoping they don't accidentally bend the connector over and possibly break the power port on their $900 smartphone that appears to have an insufficient battery life to carry it through the day even though it's "phenomenal".
Some of us don't concern ourselves about others' opinion as to it's looks, weight or bulk. Some of us only care about the device performing based on our particular needs / wants.
And some of us are VERY reluctant to run an app that demands such invasive permissions as
Identity - access to accounts
Location - Precise location (GPS and network-based)
Photos/Media/Files - modify or delete the contents of your USB storage
-test access to protected storage
in order to save battery life.
Why a battery saving app needs my serial #, google ad id#, precise location and ability to modify or delete the contents of my USB storage is concerning to me.
For those of us in that situation, no need to think twice about what fits our preference because the smarter choice for us is to go with what works best for us.
Some would advise that you'd be foolish to spend $900 on a phone when you could just as easily make calls and text from a dumb phone or that if you insist on a smart phone, it would be far more prudent and financially responsible to purchase a Note 2 or other smartphone on ebay or Craigslist for far less money. Yes, it's true, you could get something other than what you really want but you want what you want.
As for me, I love to hear about others ideas and findings, allowing me to make educated choices about either what I need or just simply want.
That's part of why I decided on the Anker 7800mah extended battery for my Galaxy S4 and the Zero Lemon universal rugged case that would accommodate any size extended battery. Yes, it was a brick but I didn't care 'cause I got the quality battery I wanted with a case that worked. I could also get a day and a half of moderate to heavy usage without having to plug in somewhere. I didn't have the inconvenience of either not having my phone with me as it lay somewhere else charging or carrying my external battery pack around to charge my phone, being very very cautious not to snag the cord and damage the power port on my expensive phone as I get my job done running service calls, up and down ladders, in and out of my van, with frequent need to talk to tech assistance for the product I was working on.
It also saved me the hassles mentioned above while on an overnight hikes where pack weight and unnecessary extra stuff is a consideration.
The best part though is it fit the bill for what I wanted. The "smarter choice" is subjective depending on your needs / wants. Even though for me the smarter choice is to keep my privacy rather than just hand it all over to app developers, and though I won't use it because of the invasive permissions, I appreciate you sharing about the Snapdragon app and your choices regarding charging. It allows me to see the pros and cons, and to learn about more of the multitude of things I am ignorant of to make an educated choice.

I had a Zerolemon for my S4, battery life was phenomenal with it! But it made the phone so huge and heavy, my arm ached when I talked on the phone for more than 10 minutes.

Wow, that's going to make the phone almost an inch thick.

Bluetooth is a wonderful thing. No need to hold a huge tablet up to your ear.

I understand but even with BT you still need to carry the phone around with you, to each their own.
U even lift bro?
i pre ordered mine as well! i don't mind the bulky case because i work construction so it gives me a piece of mind if i drop it or something. and ive heard great things about these cases on the other note phones! cant wait!

Why would you need it on a higher technology device such as the Galaxy Note 4?....
not to mention the case is an awful way to make an expensive $900 smartphone look as if you pulled it from a cereal box!

I bought the Zerolemon shockproof for my S4. It has served me well through many drops. That one looked a lot like an Otterbox to me. Only issue was the built in screen protector was very poor and sat above (not touching) the screen, so you had to press the protector down until it touched the screen to use the phone. I took it off (easy, just a little adhesive used to hold it in) and installed a Seidio tempered glass protector.
Hoping they offer the same case for universal fit with any extended battery. I'm looking forward to Anker's extended battery (in development). On the S4 they offered 7800mah vs. Zerolemon's 7500mah. I expect they may very well up the up the capacity vs. the Zerolemon again. Their warranty is 1 year and their customer service is outstanding.
Pros: it lasts very very long time, reduced shock holster
Cons: expensive, 1.5lbs heavy, huge appearance, wife hates it
Had a zerolemon on my note 3 and would NEVER buy another phone that didn't have a zerolemon extended battery and rugged case as an option! I HATE charging my phone every night because I hate the cord getting all tangled up with me while I am lying in bed trying to visit websites and watch netflix. I don't mind the extra weight or thickness because I prefer a heavier thicker phone so I know that I am actually holding something! It's all about choice and options people, you like a feather thin phone that's up to you but for me, give me a solid rugged case and a 10,000 mah battery and I am in seventh heaven!

Right? I saw it come up on my google feeds while rocking out at the Slayer concert lastnight. I'm pretty pumped about it.
I can only hope they already had made a zillion of these things and it's cheaper to try and sell some of them rather than throw them away. Better be under $20...haha
Maybe they can also make a high-end camera mod too with zoom lens and large sensor for good night shots. If they could do this it should give the company the kick it needs.
Where the hell is the charging dock? That's the one accessory I was looking to buy.

From that article -
"Wait, the Essential Phone will be a year old at that point. How long does Essential plan on selling their original, issue-plagued phone?"
Kinda **** statement, no?
That guy sounds very cynical. Considering he is in the industry he probably has every phone out there unlike some of us that can't afford to buy another phone. If he doesn't like it why does he bother reporting it?
My biggest concern is it's made out of titanium. It'll be > $100
We will see. The phone was made of titanium also. It's not as expensive as it used to be. Lot's of titanium watches out there also that are not expensive.
I'd rather use qobuz‘s flac streaming with a sony ldac bluetooth headphone...
For a company that designed arguably one of the classiest smartphones, the form factor of this DAC is surprisingly poor and inconvenient.
I would have created a case (to mate with the pins) with an extended top to house a horizontal headphone jack and electronics, and if needed, an extended bottom to house additional electronics and balance the weight. This would have resulted in simply a taller device rather than having an asymmetrical block attached to it's back...

The email I got said $400 with three months of Tidal free. Eeek.
