[Q] very slow TF700T - Asus Transformer TF700

I've just got my TF700T, and it is really really slow in comparison to my HTC One. Both devices are installed with pretty much the same apps. Is it normal? Is HTC One really much faster? Or is there something wrong with my TF700T? Thanks.

The HTC One is faster but unless you unlock and go down the custom rom route I doubt you'll be able to speed it up to your satisfaction.
If you just root it you can do browser to ram which will speed up the browsing experience.

It would be weird if your HTC One were slower than your tf700. Your HTC One has top of the line specs in almost every way imaginable (Snapdragon 600 is one of the most powerful SoCs in the Android world right now, neck in neck with the Exynos Octa). The only device that can claim higher specs than your HTC One is the Galaxy S4, which either uses an Exynos Octa or a more powerful version of Snapdragon 600. The tf700 is already outdated, and in fact, any devices with Snapdragon S4 Pro, 600, Exynos 4 and 5 will be faster than the tf700 by a considerable margin. You may improve performance through custom ROMs, kernels but hardware will always be the limiting factor. If you ever go with the custom ROM route on your HTC One, I seriously doubt that there is anything out there that can impress you.

Not to mention the gpu in the 600 was designed to handle 1080p for data. The T3 is two years old and before those displays became common on tablets.

The core count dilemma

I had an iPhone 3GS. After I lost it now I have a HTC Desire.
My contract is expiring in a few months time and looking for another phone that will last me another 2 years. If I am going to use the phone for another 2 years, the hardware has to be up to the task. However I have problem with the latest crop of dual cores Android phones.
- LG Optimus 2x (despise the fake iPhone UI)
- Samsung Galaxy S II (despise the fake iPhone UI)
- Motorola Atrix (not available here)
- HTC Sensation (considering the Incredible S, not sure if it is rootable)
I could probably use a third party home screen for the Korean phones, I have tried most of them out there, IMO none of them are perfect. Zeam is not buggy, but doesn't scroll very smooth. Launcher Pro is very smooth, but occasionally pause to re cache (keep in memory doesn't quite work). ADW's elastic effect (so is Launcher Pro's) sometimes doesn't show up. IMO their features are superior in quantity but not in quality compared to vanilla Android or HTC's Sense.
On my Desire the AOSP ROMs tends to not fully utilise the hardware like the camera. I hope there are good AOSP ROM for them.
The phones that actually attracted me are:
- HTC Desire Z (has keyboard)
- SE Xperia Arc / Pro (Gigantic screen and pretty / has keyboards)
- Nexus S (I can imagine using it unrooted)
However they being all single core are kind of a side step from what i have now and worry they might get a little long in the tooth.
I considered the iPhone 5, on most aspect iPhone 4 is very nice to me, but it doesn't allow me to do simple things like USB file transfer, which is important to me. I also have a few Linux PC that doesn't do iTunes.
Thoughts?
There's no dilemma; buying a single-core in 2011 is downright stupid.
I bet my thunderbolt will give those dual core phones a run for there money...

other than the LTE speed, it can't touch a dual core. thats so stupid that its beyond comprehension. do you also prefer a single core pentium4 over an i7?

I wouldn't say it's stupid. Single-core devices will be pushed downmarket quickly and be more accessible. But I agree, anyone who tells me that a single-phone is a range-topping device is just trying to get a laugh

I dont think economy of scales has anything to do with single or dual cores, but rather that's the natural progression of electronics. Every handset will go down eventually toward their End-of-Life (EOL) cycle before they're replaced with newer ones.

Dude you don't have to be offensive.
Besides the gap between a dual and single core snapdragon is no where near between a processor today and one from a decade ago.
I don't play games, but I expect smooth UI. So the hardware is only part of the equation. As much as I like my Desire it is not as smooth as an iPhone 4 which is similarly spec'ed.
But if a dual core is what it takes to get that kind of smoothness on Android I'll pay for it. But once I paid for it I expect it to deliver as a package and not bogged down by some third rate software. Which is why I considered the Nexus S, which is as clean as it gets. The new Xperia line seems not bad from what I have seen even though they are single core.
Although the dual core Xperia will be a killer. But SE's history of software update may be a cause for concern.

We are in agreement but thats not what I meant to suggest lol. Having dual-core phones at the subsidized $200-300USD top end will force carriers/manufacturers to price down single-core devices to occupy lower price points regardless of how competitive they are on performance.
OP - Looking at all the hands-ons lately with the Atrix, G2x, SGS2, etc. it seems like having 2 cores amounts to a fairly dramatic difference in smoothness of the UI. I guess the question is what constitutes "smooth enough"

[Q] Htc sensation poor benchmark due to sense?

Ill be honest i am still deciding whether to get the samsung galaxy S2 or the htc.
I have tested both devices and like them both.
I like the build quality, the screen resolution and the more mature nature of the interface of the htc, but i like the saturation of colours of the samsung, the better battery life and the fact it consistenly ourshines the htc in all benchmarks ( ok not linpack)..
I currently have the hero with cm 7 but from the days of 1.5 the custom roms have always been considerably quicker than stock ui.
Touchwiz is such a terrible interface and my feeling tells me its less intrusive than sense ui. So the question:
Despite the fact hardware is similar ( ok htc has less ram) are the benchmark figures due to the fact the sense ui is more intensive?
Will a custom rom make a huge improvement on benchmark result?
I must admit that although for daily use i honestly would not notice the lack of speed, it would always play in the back of my mind were i to choose the htc.
Thanks for any clarification

Due to the currently locked bootloader, and that no one has loaded custom roms or really developed for the S4G yet the answer is not fully known yet or not proven.
My guess is that the Sense UI has quite a bit to do with low benchmarks, but that the Quarter hd resolution (35% more pixels) also has a lot effect on benchmark scores. I still think these together will only improve the benchmarks to some degree. After the roms chefs get started building ASOP for the S4G and the kernel chefs get creative with the ext4 kernels then we may start seeing more comparable benchmarks.
Disclamer Benchmarks only tell part of the story, pick the phone you like to best and you will be happier
Edit: I am getting quadrant scores of 4500-5080 with my G2X @ 1.5 GHZ, but I still would rather have the HTC Sensation, eventually with ASOP Vanilla Android!!!
I agree its a grey area at present cause it has not been tested.
But i see you have the same feeling.. Impressive results with the lg..
I guess i will need to go with my gut feeling on this one..
Cheers
I am thinking buy sensation or sgs2, and sensation got terrible benchmarks compare with sgs2. Also sensation's web browser running like 15 fps while sgs2 running even smoother than iPhone( I am iPhone user now, and speed so much important for me ). This power difference really important for me cause I'm thinking use my next phone at least 3 years. So, I'm waiting unlocked sensation's bootloader. Because I want to see pure performance down on the hood.
NO I highly doubt its Sense.
Previous Benchmarks and Comparisons between Sense on older phones and Touch Wiz on Older Galaxy S will reveal that it can NOT be sense.
Sense will run better Stock then Touch Wiz Stock simply because HTCs stock Rom will be better then Samsungs Stock Rom.
Sense 3.0 on the Desire HD runs almost similar to older sense versions so one would assume that hardware which is two times as powerful would run it better (despite the pixel increase).
This said... Humming Bird vs Orion: Orion has a better CPU and better Better GPU... However.... The Jump from Humming birds CPU to Orions CPU is a larger incrimental jump then from humming birds GPU to Mali.
That Said... Mali is still superior to Andreno 220, Orion is still superior to Snapdragon (time will tell what an eqalization in OC will do tho (ie. OC sensation to 1.3 vs SGS2 1.2 ghz to compensate for increased pixels.)).
TL DR; HTC Sense runs better then Touch Wiz. So NO, it ISNT HTC Sense its Snapdragon.
Personally, I think it's HTC's ****ty drivers holding it back. This is always the case when it comes to performance.
Those scores will not make any difference when you use them.
SGS2's battery isn't any better. From SGS2's owner reports it only last a day.

Benchmarks in Android really don't mean anything.
I ran quadrant on the sensation running adw and only scored 1800
u will need the ext4 the sensation doesnt have that when a rom and a kernal suports that then u can see them benchmark numbers go up. and benchmarks do tell alot about the phone if u get 2000 and up your phone will run really smooth with no lag at all i have a vibrant and i get 2500 and its really fast all the time and thats because of ext4

I've noticed the Sensation doesn't drain at all (or VERY little) when the phone is idle. My MyTouch 4G had a big battery drain while it was idle and this isn't the first time I've heard that about the SGS2. I've been impressed with how the Sensation manages power when it's idle.
The Sensation certainly feels more than fast enough. I just had T-Mobile replace my G2x with the Sensation and it feels as fast in general. In normal use I am not experiencing the difference that the slower benchmark scoring would indicate. I didn't even realize just what a difference the battery life on the Sensation would be. If it is a slower phone I would be more than happy to trade the G2x's speed for the Sensation's battery life!
I know that Sense requires much of the phone's resources, and certainly has a performance impact, but the added features and improved ease of use make up for that. However, maybe HTC should consider offering a way to turn it off for those who prefer stock Android.
The benchmarks mean nothing. The reason why the sensation are low is because quadrant does not account for the fact it has to render 30% more pixels. If it were in lower resolution I'm sure it would outshine the sgs2.
I still havent got a decent answer to the Quadrant question - if the sensation is so much slower than the SGS2, why does it complete the quadrant test first?
Given the very basic Linpack test is quicker on the sensation (but only just), I would guess the raw CPU power is about the same as the SGSII and that there is some issue with Quadrant itself (for starters, it was never written with dual cores in mind).
hello there
its because the snapdragon uses only one core to process the benchmark and the other core is idle. i heard before from one technisian that the snapdragon processor has something called A symetrical something, nvm the name i forgot it but what he told me is that one core will do the benchmark while the other core does something else like kepping all the other functions of the rom working.
this is the only logical solution i can get to u guys, hope it helped.
and pls pray for me, i've been trying to get the sensation for almost a week and till now its out of stock or didn't reach yet

actually, adreno 220 is superior to mali 400. Search for it in this forum
But that still makes no sense (pardon the pun). If the sensation is only using 1 core and the SGS2 using 2, then surely the SGS2 would finish first?
Anyway, I guess the point is that even if the SGS2 is truly quicker (according to Quadrant at least), the fact it is quicker in actual use (because it finishes the test first, despite having to process 30% more pixels in the GFX tests, etc, etc), just shows the Quadrant is pretty much nonsense (so to speak!).

actually from all the vidz i've seen in quadrant between the sensation speeds up in the non graphical tests than the sgs2. maybe the snapdragon and the adreno far superior than the mali 400 and samsungs processor but the quadrant was not written to test symetric cores, something like that.
and if u want to compare both roms and phones then use the same screen resolutions and in my opinion the sensation will kick the sgs2's ass

Asus transformer prime infinity

From what I see it seems that they'll switch to snapdragon s4, 1.7Ghz most likely which uses a15 compared to the Penta core tegra 3 which uses a9.. now don't come with the trash....
Oh oh s4 is better... no its not., you want proof ? I get 12000 CPU score on quadrant while s4 got 8000 that's 50% faster sorry.. as of battery life... companion core...........
BUT, there is always a but, the s4 is good enough to handle pretty much anything and the adreno 225 is better than geforce ulp which helps with those pixels .. also the tegra 3 seems to lag somehow.. in browsing.. when the page is loading if you scroll or pinch to zoom it lags on the prime as well as on the one x..in the rest it's the fastest..
In terms of raw power the tegra 3 is still the king. But it that what we need ?

Soooooo many things wrong with your line of thinking.
First, quadrant measures IO of memory as well as processor speed and many other things. If you have, say class 10 memory on your device and a craptastic processor it could rate higher on quadrant than a device with class 4 memory and a extremely fast processor. Hell some roms even tweak to read extremely fast to rank very high on quadrant at the expense of everything else.
Quadrant tests mean nothing because they can be easially mutilated. If i want high quadrant its easy, if i want a fast device that does what i want, its not so easy.
next, the browser itself is what lags, not the tegra3 chip. Take the stock browser and put it in ANY other device, it will lag just as much. Its a **** browser, get one that works and then talk.
If you drive a ferrarri and say "wow this car is amazing but the windshield gets very dirty and the wipers dont clean it that well" does it mean the car is ****? No! it means you need new wipers. The same way if your browser or launcher or whatever is laggy dont complain, try a different browser and it will work better.

What about the S4 Pro? Is the only difference between the Pro and Non Pro the GPU?
Tegra 3 > Snapdragon S4?
Tegra 3 < Snapdragon S4?
DOES NOT MATTER
Personally I think the Tegra 3 is a better option, but that doesn't matter. They are only switching to the Snapdragon on the LTE versions and are switching to the Snapdragon because the Tegra 3 SoC doesn't support LTE. If you want LTE, you can't get Tegra 3.

The browser doesn't lag at all on my Prime. Not since I did a factory reset anyway.
There are a lot of things that can impact the performance or a particular app including the processor. However just because an app lags on one device and not on the other, that isn't proof that one processor is better than another. In fact that kind of comparison is practically worthless for judging the relative abilities of two different chipsets.

Here's the thing, anadtech, like pretty much most other tech media sites, have been taken over by apple fanboys who would say/do anything to put apple in a better light than others. Some times they would lie right through their teeth just to put apple in a better light. Some times it's more subtle.
The 32gb TFP model sells at $499. Everyone knows this. Last month, there was a review comparison of the prime versus the new ipad. The author dared to say the prime starts at like $600 and he proved it by linking to to an awefully overpriced website. When myself and several others spammed the hell out of their inbox demanding they change it, they changed it and said it was a "typo". I just find it amazing that all these mistakes and typos are always made to make apple look better.
Anyway, nowadays I don't trust anything the tech media says about the performances of apple devices versus others. They don't even try to hide their apple bias anymore.
Edit.
And I recently tried to use the ipad again. Smooth device. However, it still feels like an oversized ipod touch because everything is oversized. I'm not 80 years old. I don't need the icons to be that big.

Anandtech liked the Prime so much they did a pre review and a redo (due to radio issues with first unit), plus collaborated with Asus on the wifi radio issues. The Tegra 3 gpu is too weak to support 1920 x 1080. Takes a lot of power and the reason the gpu is a big part of the A5X in the iPad 3. Not fanboy a issue, but a LOT of pixels to push issue. There will need to be a new gpu if the Tegra 3 is used- if users expect smooth performance.

Ok, I'll take that I guess.
I'm just weary about tech websites nowadays. Last year, I stumbled upon an article comparing the ipad 2 to an android tablet. From start to finish, the author never even mentioned what the android tablet was. When I zoomed into the picture, I could have sworn it was one of those cheap chinese tablets that ran on android 2.2 or 1.6. This was about the time when praising the ipad got you a lot of readers because the ipad 2 had just come out.
Almost every tech review of the TF101 said typing using the docking station was annoying because the mouse pointer was jumping around too much. Get it? Not a single one of these so-called tech reviewers and experts knew the 4th button from the left top row disables the trackpad.
What I've found most interesting is the fact that for almost a year most tech reviewers just ignored the TF101 completely. There were plenty of "top 10 tablets" or "ipad killer tablets" articles. 99% of them left out the TF101 completely even though the transformer was even more popular than the xoom.
Let's go back even further. I remember when asus chairman launched the asus transformer along with several other new products. I was watching live blogs made by various "journalists". What I noticed was they were all criticizing the transformer even before they got their hands on it. I specifically remember one "journalist" writing he thought no one would be interested in a laptop-tablet hybrid.
The tech media needs to start doing some heavy self-censuring if they want me to start trusting them again. As far as I'm concern, they're a bunch of liars who would say anything to put apple above everything else.
Agreed with the fanboy bias, since there are a few major sites that prefer Apples in their diet.

Frustrated with screen sizes on premium phones, back to Apple...

Hi xda,
I have small hands. I have largish hands for a female, but still too small to reach the upper left corner of my Nexus 4's screen when using it with one hand. Very annoying, since many important controls reside there; I often end up dropping the phone if I try to reach them.
It annoys me greatly that there are no Android devices with high-end specs that have a screen smaller than 4.3" All I want is a phone with Nexus 4 specs, in the body of, say, the Galaxy minis. But all I see is smaller screens with crippled hardware. The HTC One mini comes close, with 2GB of RAM (in my opinion, the needed amount for snappy performance in 4.2), but it's months dow the road with too many ifs, and I tire of waiting. I see many phones outside the US that fit my needs, but I don't see importing as a viable option, since rom support would be questionable.
As much as I dislike Apple's ecosystem, I'm about to switch back, since the iPhone is the only option that meets my needs. I recognize that the iPhone 5 has hardware commensurate to a much weaker phone on the Android side, but iOS, in my experience, is a bit less demanding. I would rather stick with Android, but handset makers do not cater to me
I'm female too, and my hands are relatively small (glove size 6/S). Yet I'm actually intending to buy a bigger phone: the 5.99" Note 3, because I find my SGS3 not big enough.
I don't know what you're doing wrong, but I can easily reach the top left corner of my screen with one hand. No, not if I keep my pinky around the phone, but if I slide it a bit, I can reach past the screen. And it's never in danger of falling out of my hand during the process.
The reason smaller phones have lesser hardware is because they don't require high-end specs: there's no point in having a 1080p screen in 4". And if your resolution is low, your hardware doesn't need to work as hard. So they put in lower-end hardware. What's the point of having and paying for high end hardware if it's never going to be used by the phone itself?

I do not entirely agree. While true, a smaller screen is less demanding, the difference between a browser on 1GB of memory vs. 2GB is huge. My Galaxy Nexus before my Nexus 4 was much slower at rendering pages. I had a TF700t as well, and 1GB of memory did not sustain a comfortable experience and there was considerable lag launching and using applications.

I do not entirely agree. While true, a smaller screen is less demanding, the difference between a browser on 1GB of memory vs. 2GB is huge. My Galaxy Nexus before my Nexus 4 was much slower at rendering pages.

My guess is that the amount of RAM has nothing to do with page rendering, it helps with multitasking, the difference in page rendering you see is due to the raw CPU power the Nexus 4 has over the G.Nexus, not the amount of RAM, may i remind you the Nexus 4 has a S4 Pro with 4 cores @ 1.5 GHz while the G.Nexus is a TI OMAP dual core @ 1.2 GHz, not to mention the Krait cores on the S4 Pro have better performance than the A9 cores on the TI OMAP.

Ah, yeah, I realized my bad choice of words after posting, but couldn't edit for five minutes so went to do other things.
I completely get that the Nexus 4 has a better CPU. Bad example on my part.
Perhaps better though, is when I got my TF700t. That and the Nexus 4 have *somewhat* comparable CPUs, at least in terms of Ghz/Cores, correct me if I'm wrong. However, the Transformer was painful to use due to having half the RAM. Opening Chrome became a frustrating waiting game. The Galaxy Note 8 that I had for a short time, however, was much snappier. There was much less waiting for pages to become responsive.
What are the important things which reside in the upper left corner?? hmm.. never gave it a thought- pls tell!!

Have you bothered to read even one page in the TF700 forum? Because we've made it abundantly clear that the amount of RAM is not the issue: The I/O issue is what's responsible for the lag. Flash a different ROM (Cromi-x) and the Tab is the fastest on the market.
Also, and I am getting quite tired of saying this time and time again: The Nexus 4 is 1280x768, the TF700 is 1920x1200. That's almost twice as many pixels it has to push, on a screen almost three times as big. Do the math. The N4 is pretty much a Vehron in an urban 30kph zone. Way too much power it's never going to need.
And also a small point regarding the comparison between the tf700t and the nexus 4. The nexus 4 has the s4 pro, which far and away destroys the tegra 3 because of the superior architecture. Just because both are quad core does not mean you can expect similar performance.

I think about buying a Oneplus One and I have a few questions about it.

Hi, Black friday deals have started popping up in my country and I found a pretty good deal on the Oneplus one so I thought i'd buy one, but I have a few questions before I do:
1. I mostly do browsing, whatsapp and some gaming on my phone so I wanted to know if the experience on the oneplus One is buttery smooth in the things I listed. I currently have an Iphone 4s and I can't stand the little stutters, long loadings before opening apps and a lot of lags in internet browsing and in Whatsapp. My main reason for buying a new phone is a better general experience, so its really important for me that the OPO will be smooth.
I just saw reviews on the new Oneplus X which has the same processor as the oneplus One, and some of the reviews said that the Snapdragon 801 is really showing its age, so it got me a bit worried.
2. I saw that some people had issues with the touch on the Oneplus One. Are those issues resolved? And If not, should I worry about it?
3. For the people who play Hearthstone, does this phone handle Hearthstone well? I know that even phones with good processors have some troubles with Hearthstone so I want to know if the Oneplus one handles it well.
Thanks in advance!
I got mine in May this year and so far it has been running smoothly. Gaming and everyday tasks like the ones you listed posed no problems. The touchscreen issues have also been fixed over the last months. For the best experience you should try out some custom roms.
I hope I could help you

Thank you, happy to hear its been working smoothly for you. I heard there's a really good custom rom called Sultan CM12, but honestly im afraid to get into roms and stuff like that because I almost bricked my nexus 4 messing with roms, and I don't really wanna take risks with this one.
There are plenty of guides and tutorials online which explain step by step how to flash custom roms /recoveries. Even with the stock pre-installed CM you will surely get a great user experience

I use Sultanxda's CM 12.1 and I can vouch that it is amazing. Great performance and battery life.

The iPhone 4S is ancient and massively slower than pretty much any new phone on the market for several years now. Get hold of an iPhone 5/5S and you see the huge difference.
As for Snapdragon 801 "showing its age", that's still a pretty much wrong statement. Snapdragon 801 performs on about the same level with the Intel Atom processors seen in the mid-range Asus Zenfone 2, while delivering massively better battery life. The 801 is also better than Qualcomm's current 64-bit midrange Snapdragon 615. Tests show that Qualcomm's top of the line Snapdragon 808 and 810 do beat the 801 in a number of tests anywhere from a non-significant factor up to a factor of two. But those new 64-bit SoCs also have issues with heat and battery life, and so the phones using those often throttle the performance after a minute or two to prevent overheating.
In my experience, the Oneplus One is an excellent and very responsive phone. In USA, it's still the best $300 phone for those who don't demand the compatibility with the LTE's band 12. Oneplus X should have been a fine phone too considering the price of only $250, but Oneplus has really messed up the usability of LTE on the American version.

Thx for the response! I think i'll go for it then.
1.Its damn smooth for all the things you need.
2.All touch problems are resolved
3. Didn't heard about hearthstone
OPO becomes the beast if you go with custom rooms and root.
And jump from iPhone 4 to OPO it wil
