Yes, the remedy is: return it and get a different one because your chip is garbage. My phone stays cool.

No sadly not at the minute. The htc m9 is having the same issue but qualcomm have reportedly solved the issue which hopfully should be sorted in a software fix. I guess we just need to leep our fingers crossed for a software fix soon

Took my flex back because it was having issues with lag overheating and the screen died then came back on and wouldn't charge and battery died fast. The new phone is so fast it's hard to believe it's the same phone. It don't overheat and it last longer on battery. There's a bad batch of devices that are bad if i was you i would take it back . im glad i did because it's a night and day difference no lie i thought it was the software like people was saying it's not .

Just ordered mine and it would be shipped next week.

Did the 5.1.1 fix the thermal throttling and overheating?

with 5.1.1 the 810 don't go beyond 1.5GHz and still throttle but overheating is moderate, less hot than a Nexus 4 that have a S4 Pro but really hotter than a Honor 6 that have a HiSilicon Kirin SoC.

How much did killing the clock speed hurt performance though or was the performance worse with the higher clock and thermal issues?
Either I'd be little annoyed if i paid for a device with a certain chip and clock speed and an update reduced it.
They should be giving partial refunds or something along that line, you are not getting what you paid for.

There is already some discount on M9 and Flex2, I paid 400€, the price of a mid-range device and with reduced speed it perform like a good mid-range device with high-end finish.
You may have noticed that the rumored snapdragon 820 may have core named Kryo (like Cryo, icy cold in greek).

I disagree even with throttling gflex 2 is still a monster.Still high end.faster than m9. S6 is faster though. In price i agree . but even g4 s price is going down very fast.
The first leaked benchmarks of 820 show a very good single core performance and in multicore a little bit over exynos (s6).

That's why I'm considering the flex 2, I can get it for less then $500CAN. The only catch is its the H959 with only 2g ram.

My G Flex 2 ls996 still hits 2ghz... So not sure why that was posted. Also I have antutu benchmarks of 58000, which isn't bad. Lag has been cut down quite a bit. Every now an then there is a hiccup, but its seldom and only happens for about a second . Also haven noticed any heat issues either

This sucks if it really is so that no 2ghz after updating 5.1.1. Same if Ferrari only gives you 300hp from 600hp engine. This phone was not so good buy startin to realize it now. I downgrade it today but still 1,5ghz kernel is april dated. test antutu and serious drop, with 5.1.1 was 54000 and with 5.0.1 43500, not good.

I get about 53 000, almost 54. Have you frozen bloatware apps yet? And have you made the thermal configurations yet?

I have frozen those apps but no thermal conf. I just use trickster mod and put row on... There was so many things better with 5.1.1 so hopefully we manage to get at least root for 5.1.1. Maybe I keep using this from now on, until and hopefully something happens. Im not satisfied my decision to buy this phone and now nexus 6 32gb 499e and with that phone we have root, unlocked bootloader, custom recovery, you name it. 6" display size maybe a bit too large to carry but nexus is nexus...

If you miss the Nexus series but don't want the huge screen, deal with the Flex 2 until October (3 months) of this year and the new Nexus 5 will be out, that's what I'm doing. My old Nexus 5 runs much smoother and has zero issues. Wish I hadn't given it to my daughter.

For sure. I am also disappointed with taking this phone and can't afford a new one. The design is great, I love the curve, but the one I have now is the third one I've gotten as I handed in 2 others already that gave issues. I think LG majorly screwed up on this phone and does not want to admit it. My phone works pretty well now, and it is a definite improvement on my S4 which I had previously, though. I wouldn't mind the Nexus 6 though, or the Xiaomei Note Pro (though the development support on this one would probably zero). If I can get some cash and maybe sell this phone, I can get the Nexus 6. I'm not sure I'd be able to, unfortunately, but we'll see.

Moto G is always a good choice. Tons of support for ROMs and kernels and such. Also, the boot loader is easily unlocked. It's more than your price tag, but you'll be much happier with it's flexibility and more powerful processor.

Should I assume that despite your moniker that you do not currently own a Nexus 5? If that's the case, get your hands on a used Nexus 4. Tons of ROMs, kernels, mods, etc. A Galaxy S3 (with Snapdragon and 2gb RAM, not the Exynos one) wouldn't be a bad option either.

Go for Motorola and Nexus devices. They have plenty of custom rom support.
and fast when it comes to OS updates too.

Yea its never going to be anywhere near the OPO. I did see a video of it running CM12 though, again though who knows if you'll be able to get hold of it.

Thank you all guys, am wondering getting some "china" phone, but seems like there is a problem with MediaTek CPU/chipset - the support of custom roms is quite small if none for some CPU/chipset/phones.
Can anyone explain me to this. If to get a phone with Mediatek chip, which one to get for widest custom rom support? Or is it like that the only thing matter is the model of CPU and custom rom working on specific CPU will work fine on other phone with same CPU?

Try the Oppo Find 7A or 7. Same device in a sense, only it has native Color OS (and no touchscreen issues). Sadly, NO LTE on some carriers. I think the Find 7 is $500 while the 7A is $400. In the US, hard to get, but not impossible, trust me. The 7 is QHD (2K resolution) while the 7A is 1080p. For that case, I went with the 7A as it packs more of a punch.
Or the Xiaomi Mi3W or Mi4, the native MIUI phones. Again, lack of LTE on US carriers but trust me, they are very fast, unique and a breath of fresh air since stock ("vanilla" android) TouchWiz, Optimus UI and Sense have gotten boring. Pricing varies, but average from $300 to $400, just watch out where you order it from.
Lastly, the Moto X 2014 packs quite a punch and a beautiful display, and you have a good warranty back up. Be sure to skip the Verizon model (XT1096) as it cannot have its bootloader unlocked and root is VERY limited. They can now be ordered for as little as $400 for the 16GB or $450 for the 32GB, and customized options do not affect pricing unless you opt in for accessories.
I cannot recommend the Nexus 5 as it had very aggressive thermal throttling, so you never experience the 2.3GHz at its fullest, it has also been pulled out of Google's lineup. The HTC One M8 is a MARVELOUS device, and very lag free, however, it has heat issues, sometimes they begin over a short amount of time and that heat will QUICKLY deteriorate the battery. The LG G3 has a nice display, however, it is a lag machine. You really can not use it for 3D games. The G2 is also old and problematic. The G Flex 1 is still worth considering, but it is HUGE, the POLED display is very prone to burned in imaged if not properly taken care of, the curved display is weird to some and it has a 720p resolution. It is however pretty darn great. The G Flex 2 sports a Snapdragon 810, but that is not a good thing. It has been noted that the 810 heats up ALOT, which is why the Xiaomi Mi5 might use the 808 and the G4 is confirmed to have gone with the 808. The Galaxy S5 and Note 3 have very slow UI animations and overall do not have great performance. The bloatware on them is also through the roof. The newer Note 4, Note Edge, S6 and S6 Edge are just too pricey. The Nexus 6 is a HUGE Moto X 2014, but it has a bit of a price tag, and if your hands are not as big as mine, you can forget it. It has superb performance. The Droid Turbo is beginning to meet its end at high prices when it comes to used ones, but again, no bootloader unlock and root is limited.
I would REALLY recommend sticking to it for a while longer as the OnePlus Two is around the corner, the Moto X 2015 is already being rumored, the Xiaomi Mi5 MIGHT enter the US market (if your in the USA) and so on. It might also be a bad idea to hold on to it as the release of the OnePlus Two will mean fans of the OnePlus One will want to sell theirs to get the newer one, and the used value of it will drop significantly or become a challenge to get rid of.

awesome phone and not looking back!
only 3 things to consider:
-can you deal with the size? true, its got a nice screen-to-body ratio with tiny bezels, but its still a big phone!
- secondly, can you arrange yourself with EMUI? and if not, are you willing to tinker with the system to adjust it to your needs and wants?
- lastly, the GPU is "only" mainstream, so if u want highend graphics and are a mobile gamer, u might want to wait for upcoming SD or exynos devices...
on the other hand, if your focus is primarily on battery life, super smooth day to day operation, the fastest mobile cpu on the planet (indeed, even faster than upcoming SD820 and exynos8890!) a HUGE display with superthin bezels and super crisp, clear and vivid colors, then this is definitely for you!

Got a Mocha Gold 4/64gb version and I simply love the phone. Since I have been using Mi Note Pro before, I do not see whats wrong with Huawei's EMUI (albeit tons of complaints web-wide).
Not too sure about mainstream reviews, but mine came along with a rapid charger and flip case+generic screen protector. Some online reviews were *****ing about not having the rapid charger in the package.
On the other hand, for the un-initiated, the GPU on the mate 8 may look like crap vs the SD or Exynos. But after testing it on my Mi Note Pro (SD 810 SoC), I discovered the Mate 8 does not throttle (or a little) when compared to it, after prolonged game play.
My Mi Note Pro, starts to heats up really fast and you can tell the throttling a few minutes into GPU intensive games.
I am not sure about Exynos or the latest SD820 SoC devices, but based on Tom's hardwareRead the Article here

Does the Mate 8 have multi-user profiles by default? If not are you able to somehow activate them?

I wouldn't recommend because of the notifications bug. People who don't dive deep into settings will miss emails, messages, etc.

In this case, this is not a mate 8 bug but an android 6 bug.

I would recommend it to most people. If having the best camera is important to you then I would pass. Everything else is great with the phone except the camera doesn't take sharp enough photos. They look sharp on the phone screen but transfer them anywhere else and you'll see how sharp they aren't compared to other phones.

That's an issue, that hopefully will soon be fixed!

HTC One M9 32GB Vs OnePlus One A0001 64GB

Hi all,
Hoping for some advice here. Currently using the aforementioned HTC but have recently acquired a OnePlus One 64GB. I know very little about the OnePlus range but the basic specs make for good reading in comparison to the HTC. In addition, my HTC no longer vibrates and has regular battery burn up.
So my question, is the OnePlus a step backward given its age or is it a side step into the same performance playing field as my HTC?

Backward, but I love my OPO, it works so well in all aspects

OPO is a flagship phone and a good one at that.
The only issue I ever had with OPO is getting a GPS lock no matter what fixes I have tried always have the problem. This problem is easily solved by just using a regular GPS instead of relying on the phone GPS

No doubt on the Paper the M9 has its advantages. But give the OPO a chance, the phone is simple great, it has a very good SoT, a crispy screen. It also runs fast in real use scenarios.
U can try to run Antutu Benchmark at the same time on both devices. Make sure the OPO has a proper Rom and a fluid kernel configurations.
I let a LG G4 with Snapdragon 808 run against my OPO with a proper configured 801. My 801 was about 40% faster, the GPU just about 4% slower. The opo can hold this performance over time without thermal throlling at about 69-71°c
End of the Story is, the LG G4 is getting sold now, instant after the buy

my underclocked opo performed BETTER and FASTER than the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S6. I would've recommended it if it wasnt for qualcom ditching the 801 processor for N.

How does the SD 670 perform?

I was thinking about replacing my 2 XL. The 670 seems comparable to the 835 except marginally less performance and download speeds. I don't think the performance would be very noticeable, especially since I'm not a heavy user. Mostly browsing social media, Chrome, YouTube and occasionally PoGo. But does the 670 support carrier aggregation and dual channel WiFi?

I have a Nokia 7 Plus with the older Snapdragon 660 and that performs fine with everything i use it for, so the 670 will have no problems at all.

So far so good, I have a Note 8 for comparison and this feels snappier than the Note 8. It helps having a clean UI design, but I feel like I have a premium flagship.

It's fast, speedy, and smooth. I also have a 512gb Galaxy S10+ and it feels just as fast.

No issues so far with 3a coming from S9.
Downloading all my apps and tinkering seemed to take longer but sorted it out over night. Now all seems right

I have the S9, OnePlus6T and now the Pixel 3a and I can honestly say there is not much of a noticeable difference between the three as far as speed and capabilities handling apps. The OnePlus 6T is slightly faster and smoother but that is to be expected with its better ram and chip. I had the Pixel 3 when it first came out and then later sold it but I can say the 3a is almost as good as that phone and for the price its a no brainer

I typically don't play games on my phones, but I have found the 3a just fine so far.

I just got a 3a coming from a 2XL. It feels just as smooth and I don't feel like I'm missing anything coming from it.

I'm using the SD 660 on my Lenovo yoga tab 3 plus.
Confirm previous posts about the speed for the SD6 series: it's a good deal!

Thanks for all your input. I got to try them out at Target and they seemed to perform well except when coming out of demo mode, but that is probably to be expected. And those displays are gorgeous. Now I just have to decide if I want the bigger screen or not.

Nexus 5x has been reborn

I don't really agree with the above. If you're freshly restarted and just flipping about the GUI it's nice and smooth. When compared to the 6T side by side however it's slower. Not a huge thing and you need them sitting next to each other to notice, by itself it feels quite smooth. That's doing nothing: Once I have stuff up and running and am in my usual software scenario I get redraws fairly often while multi-tasking. Even something as simple as opening the main options can involve a stutter. This isn't flagship land and it shows. I'm not talking deal breaker material from my own point of view because there are a lot of other positive things going on at a decent price. I do notice a lack though when stacked up against a 6T, cant call it any other way.

Redraws are normal with Pixel devices. I've owned a 2 XL, 3 XL and just ordered a 3a XL. That's because they only want to put 4 gigs of RAM in their devices. I wish and hope Google gets off their pedestal and realize software can't fix everything. They need at least 6 GB of RAM. 8 would be nice and I want a telephoto lens on the back. That being said I'm sure it wouldn't stack up against a 6t. I had a 3t that was blazing fast for the time. Actually it would probably still hold up. Their software/UI is great too but the camera makes the difference.

Yeah, I had a 3XL, traded it for the 6T. The notch and 1k price point just didn't work for me. I'm aware of the reason for the redraws, my 6T shows me using 5ish at most times and I've got 4 here. I'm still keeping it until the fall stuff comes out. It's no question gimped compared to the top dogs but I didn't pay top dog pricing and it has other positive attributes.

The SD660 should be fine.
Right now I'm on my Pixel XL (the original one) which is similar to the 3a in terms of performance and it runs fine with Android P.

Anyhow, I like to run custom ROM and I always Root my phones. I see that there are methods to do the Rooting but how difficult is it? I am a noob when it comes to line commands. I like it to be simple to root and on the Nexus 5 someone made a Windows program that rooted it. I have also used FWUL to work on my phones and using FWUL is great! You don't have to worry about drivers or anything like that.
How are games on the Pixel 3a? I am hooked on playing the game "Skullgirls" and it works ok on my Nexus 5 but I do have some major slowdowns.
My Nexus 5 has 2GB of RAM and the CPU is running a 2.26GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon but the new Pixel 3a is only running a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 670
2.0GHz + 1.7GHz, 64Bit Octa-Core and it only has 4 GB of RAM.... is that really a huge improvement over my Nexus 5?

Coming from a OnePlus 5 I notice no performance decrease. I've had my 3a for about 2 weeks and it runs as good, if not better than the OnePlus 5. I was worried about RAM, but have not had any issues so far.

How are games on the Pixel 3a? I am hooked on playing the game "Skullgirls" and it works ok on my Nexus 5 but I do have some major slowdowns.
My Nexus 5 has 2GB of RAM and the CPU is running a 2.26GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon but the new Pixel 3a is only running a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 670
2.0GHz + 1.7GHz, 64Bit Octa-Core and it only has 4 GB of RAM.... is that really a huge improvement over my Nexus 5?

yes it will be a huge upgrade over your nexus 5. i upgraded from a nexus 5x and the upgrade was huge. double the ram, a better and newer soc, the gpu of the soc is great, and it is way more power efficient than older socs. numbers are not everything.

Anyhow, I like to run custom ROM and I always Root my phones. I see that there are methods to do the Rooting but how difficult is it? I am a noob when it comes to line commands. I like it to be simple to root and on the Nexus 5 someone made a Windows program that rooted it. I have also used FWUL to work on my phones and using FWUL is great! You don't have to worry about drivers or anything like that.

I came from a OnePlus 6 (similar price to the 3A on the used market). Performance is noticeably worse, you get way more app reloads and loading apps takes an extra half a second. Battery life is about the same. Camera, speakers, vibration motor, screen quality (especially when very dim), and ergonomics are all much better on the 3A. And let's be honest, how much time do you spend switching between apps vs within an app? I sold my OnePlus 6 and am pretty happy with my 3A. Really enjoying a 1-handed phone with good battery life that isn't an expensive that you need to be precious with it. No case, no screen protector, if it breaks, I'll just replace it, no big deal.

Thanks all for the info. Would anyone be willing to download the "Skullgrils" game from the play store and give it a try on the Pixel 3a? It is a totally free game. No pop up or ads.
If you want to do this let me know and I will give you some ideas on how to stress out the Pixel 3a and see how it preforms.
