i have been using the droid x2 for about two years. it has a locked bootloader, and very limited abilities as far as flashing roms goes. kernels will be a new thing to me. i have noticed that in most rom install instructions, there are no specifications on what version to be on. lol not something i am used to.
could someone point me in the right direction for some reading material on the subject? this phone specifically? i understand a fair amount about being rooted and performing various things within recovery and android in general. i just want to make sure that before i go messing around with my s3, i know exactly what im doing. thanks in advance.
also, i have read a decent amount already, and it seems like this phone is fairly easy to brick,? also not something i am used to. the droid x2 with its locked bootloader was next to impossible to brick.
cant wait to join the ranks.! thanks again.
Lots of info here. Some of the info is old but reading it will help.

The only way I have seen someone hardbricking is by flashing a rom that's not made for the Verizon version. It seems people will accidently flash a rom for the the International version.
A few tips, back up your imei, make sure you unlock your bootloader and only flash Verizon roms.

Might be a silly noob question. But here goes: I will be getting a new used Nexus S 4G Sprint phone shortly and use it as my daily driver. I wanna jump on this JB fuss and flash Roms on this thing. But was wondering, should I activate the phone before unlocking , rooting and flashing? Or after or does it matter? I just wanna be safe and keep the data working on the phone because I've been reading scary stuff here after JB updates and all.
Appreciate any feedback.

If you unlock the bootloader now, you don't need to worry about losing all your stuff since it wipes EVERYTHING on the device. People flashed their JB builds and didn't fully read stuff which is why they were getting errors. Read some of the guides available on this site and get familiar with the ins and outs

the best advice 4u is to follow his advice.
I think my reply is worded incorrectly. I meant to say if you unlock the bootloader now, there won't be anything on there, so you really don't have to worry about backing anything up.

So, I'll admit that this is my first android phone and I'll admit that I didn't take a bunch of time to learn anything about what I needed to do before rooting and unlocking and flashing and everything else.
My problem is, I've unlocked my bootloader just fine and I rooted my phone just fine. The problem came when I found Android Revolution HD, from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562603, and wanted it. I didn't understand how to flash a new ROM or anything, but I went ahead and tried. I flashed several different boot images and recoveries so I don't even know where to begin. I flashed recovery-clockwork-5.8.4.0-endeavoru and tried to use the boot.img from the link I posted. Now I can't boot into recovery or restart my phone or even do a factory reset. I'm afraid that I messed everything up to the point where I need a new phone or something. I know I should have spent more time with this before diving into it, I was just excited. Is there anything I can do? I'm sorry if my problem is vague..

first of all, you flashed a ROM and recovery not meant for your phone. Our One X is a snapdragon based phone codenamed evita.
can you get to boot loader anymore?
if so relock it
then install the factory RUU that matches the version you had before, probably 1.85
then spend about 2 or 3 weeks reading the threads in OUR development section before you unlock the bootloader and flash anything else.

A lot of others have rendered their device useless by flashing international ROMs and mods.... I suggest you subscribe to this forum, and ONLY stay in this forum! This mistake is very easy to make for someone who just bought a phone. I know that the credo at XDA is rtfm but the mods of the respective forums really ought to make the effort to make the distinction more obvious.
HTC and AT&T should have done that.
Seems pretty self explanatory to me.

Ahh, you are correct. Been on here so long haven't had to actually search for XDA on google.
One problem is when you search xda one XL in Google, the first link is actually the correct forum.... however right under that it lists:
HTC one x Q & A
HTC one x Themes and apps..
Etc etc...
↑↑↑↑↑↑—— if you click on those options it goes to the International threads.. once your in its very easy to go on not noticing your in international waters. Ive caught myself in wrong forums more than once when xda app acts up and I use a browser....

I know I made the same mistake in my first ROM flashing experience. And I even knew that ROMs for the International One X were incompatible! I just had no idea what "endeavoru" meant.
Since then, I've been keeping track of many HTC One X terms, which I highly recommend the original poster take a peek at.
HTC One XL Terminology Glossary

Revolution HD seems to be a popular ROM for the International One X. Maybe they should explicitly note in the OP that it will likely brick an AT&T One X if flashed (if they don't already!)
This may also be a good thread to take a look at (if you don't feel bad enough already!)

Hey,
I'm offering a $20 bounty to whoever would like to have a Skype chat with me (video preferably) and help me root/unlock bootloader/flash a rom. I come from the land of jailbreaking iPhones and this whole root stuff seems a hella more complicated.
Here is my situation:
I am updated to the latest version of android (4.0.4) with the latest OTAs from Verizon. My baseband is the latest VRLG7 version. I would like someone who has gone through this whole process or someone with credibility on XDA.
There is so much compatibility checks that you must do that it is too hard for a newbie like me to risk my $600+ device.
I am running stock TouchWiz with no mods or root or anything.
Please reply and I will PM you shortly.
Thanks!
There is still the option of posting your doubts here on XDA, and paying nothing..
If you are still unsure of what you are doing, then perhaps you should read up on this stuff, and maybe even watch some videos on people doing things like this. Modifications to the firmware of the phone should not be attempted unless you know what you are doing.
I would help you for free. But I'm at work for another five hours. So I'm no help right now.
There's a root tool you can use.
From there, use unlock boot loader app from market.
Install Rom manager. Flash recovery.
Install room as needed. I have files at home to use. I can upload them later.
There are guides all over the forum. Look in the development section.

Biggest mistake you can make is to pay someone else to walk you thru this and in the process, learn nothing about your new phone.
Everything you need is in these forums. Read all the stickies ... read them again ... and then, again. Rooting and unlocking your bootloader are pretty much one click propositions.
Then, when you are ready to play with root privileges, you will understand modems, kernels, ROMs, rom themes, build.prop tweaks, etc. ... and won't do something stupid, like trying to flash an I9300 ROM to your I535.

Yes, everything you need is in these forums, but I could definitely see it being more reassuring, less stressful, and less time consuming to have someone explaining the process as it's happening. Hands on learning and instruction.
The fact that he is willing to pay someone $20 for their time and expertise is pretty cool of him. A lot of users on here just expect tech support for free, lol.
If you still want a live walk through, I'd do it.

I completely understand the fear. I've been rooting and roming since the Original Droid and I still get nervous each time I try doing it with a new phone. However some amazing people here put together some truly impressive tools and tutorials. Follow them step by step and you'll succeed. Destroying the phone to a point where it's not fixable is usually not that easy.
Personally I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709 and everything was SUPER easy.
Once you do it a few times you really do lose the fear, in my case it always comes back with each new phone.
Just for the record, I'm very happy with my S3 and the only reason I even rooted was to make it not turn on when the home button was pressed. I had it in a pouch and it kept getting pressed in my pocket.
Wow. Just a few hours and I got PM's from people showing me how to do it all for free. You guys are truly amazing. It's so great that we have such a large community on XDA with such helpful and supportive people.
My new reasons that people should switch to android.
1. Great OS with endless customization
2. A rock star community of wonderful people
Thanks so much guys.

please do some research and read. there are probably more than 5 of the roms that meet your criteria in the development section.
you need to try roms and read and see what meets your needs. there are guides and similar threads all over this forum.
there are some small features in some that arent available in others that will make people want certain roms.
put a little effort in, itll serve you well. its obvious youve put in 0% effort.
I was just hoping for some examples from users who have had experience.

I mean, the titles of the roms and original posts have all the information youd really ever need.

I wont respond with a jerk answer. Bro try synergy rom, hyperdrive rom, or beanstown rom. Im personally drawn to using any rom by deviant. Sons of android, deviant one, there's a couple. Not to mention the support in the threads are great. I recently tried synergy. Great rom, and great support aswell. Synergy is very very stable. Just make sure u read the o.p. prior to flashing anything. Don't forget to unlock your bootloader.

Not hard at all now was it.
That is because your question is asked and answered hundreds of times a week. It gets very repetaive.
Doing a google search for "4.1.2 root sch-i535" will give you plenty of results. Dont limit yourself to xda, check youtube and other sites as well. I spent a month on and off reserching methods and reading user errors before I rooted, unlocked and flashed. That is excessive but I wanted to minimize and fix any errors thst might come my way.

Hi All,
I am looking for help on flashing a new ROM (probably a recent version of CM) to my SG3 I535 running Android 4.4.2. I was able to root it using towelrot and ended up soft bricking it when I tried to use ROM manager to reboot the phone into recovery. I then used Odin to flash back to stock.
This is where I am now stuck. My research shows that maybe I need to unlock the boot loader? But am unsure if that is actually my next step or how to get there. Any help or a guide in the right direction would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks in advance!

With being on NE1 4.4.2 you can't flash a custom recovery other than safestrap. Your lucky you didn't hard brick it trying to flash a recovery with rom manager. You can't unlock the bootloader at this point, that was last available on 4.1.2 and it is no longer an option
