Stuck in bootloop - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So, I'll admit that this is my first android phone and I'll admit that I didn't take a bunch of time to learn anything about what I needed to do before rooting and unlocking and flashing and everything else.
My problem is, I've unlocked my bootloader just fine and I rooted my phone just fine. The problem came when I found Android Revolution HD, from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1562603, and wanted it. I didn't understand how to flash a new ROM or anything, but I went ahead and tried. I flashed several different boot images and recoveries so I don't even know where to begin. I flashed recovery-clockwork-5.8.4.0-endeavoru and tried to use the boot.img from the link I posted. Now I can't boot into recovery or restart my phone or even do a factory reset. I'm afraid that I messed everything up to the point where I need a new phone or something. I know I should have spent more time with this before diving into it, I was just excited. Is there anything I can do? I'm sorry if my problem is vague..

first of all, you flashed a ROM and recovery not meant for your phone. Our One X is a snapdragon based phone codenamed evita.
can you get to boot loader anymore?
if so relock it
then install the factory RUU that matches the version you had before, probably 1.85
then spend about 2 or 3 weeks reading the threads in OUR development section before you unlock the bootloader and flash anything else.

My friend, might I add you are very, very lucky you don't have a flagship phone that only gives you a reflection lol. A lot of others have rendered their device useless by flashing international ROMs and mods.... I suggest you subscribe to this forum, and ONLY stay in this forum! Make sure you take this as a valuable lesson!

This mistake is very easy to make for someone who just bought a phone. I know that the credo at XDA is rtfm but the mods of the respective forums really ought to make the effort to make the distinction more obvious.

HTC and AT&T should have done that.

Seems pretty self explanatory to me.

When you arrive at the forum via Google it's easy to miss

Ahh, you are correct. Been on here so long haven't had to actually search for XDA on google.

One problem is when you search xda one XL in Google, the first link is actually the correct forum.... however right under that it lists:
HTC one x Q & A
HTC one x Themes and apps..
Etc etc...
↑↑↑↑↑↑—— if you click on those options it goes to the International threads.. once your in its very easy to go on not noticing your in international waters. Ive caught myself in wrong forums more than once when xda app acts up and I use a browser....

I know I made the same mistake in my first ROM flashing experience. And I even knew that ROMs for the International One X were incompatible! I just had no idea what "endeavoru" meant.
Since then, I've been keeping track of many HTC One X terms, which I highly recommend the original poster take a peek at.

Revolution HD seems to be a popular ROM for the International One X. Maybe they should explicitly note in the OP that it will likely brick an AT&T One X if flashed (if they don't already!)
This may also be a good thread to take a look at (if you don't feel bad enough already!)

When you start calling people names, you are the one that appears immature and childish, no matter how correct you may be.
The problem is, though, you are not correct. Maybe it only appears as a "simple" mistake to you, probably because you don't care or haven't spent enough time in the forums, but for people who frequent XDA then it has become a cumulative nuisance.
Also, when the majority of users responding in the thread you started is either questioning the logic of your statement or placement of the thread then maybe you need to reflect on what you were trying to accomplish and maybe take into consideration how you can achieve better results in the future. Long story short, try to learn from your mistakes.
Okay, so, International One x won't be compatible because of hardware differences, but what about the One S roms? I just tried flashing the CM9 port for the S, and it flashed successfully but upon reboot the screen was just filled with green graphical glitches. Rebooting back into recovery and attempting to restore my backup of the stock system didn't work at all, so RUU for me... but, why wouldn't a One S ROM work? It has 99% of the same hardware... besides the qHD screen. I remember being able to flash a Droid 3 ROM to my bootloader-locked Atrix 2 and it booting up just fine. What's different here?

Looks like the devs are not working on Root for 1.85

Arg....seems like the devs have moved on to getting s-off and coming out with new roms and have given up on finding exploits to root 1.85. The threads for root have been empty for a while now...wondering if its time to exchange the phone or return it and want for the sg3?
I know i'm not the only person frustrated for upgrading to 1.85....

You can. That is what I did. It's pretty simple.
Revert to 1.82, root,
one click superCID
relock in fast boot
ruu 1.85
flash the unlock token from fastboot, it took me a few tries before it took
flash a recovery (twrp is working well for us right now)
and then use the recovery to flash the SU zip file. Then you're all set
Well this is how it works.
Once you update your RUU to 1.85 then install CWM (flashing utility in recovery) You will just flash the Rom you wish this will give you root.
Hope this clears things up?
I'm unclear on the rooted 1.85 but from what I gather you have to have done superCID hack before upgrading to be able to gain root. I believe you have to also have superCID to do ruu to a previous firmware. I may be wrong but if your on 1.85 without superCID I think your SOL for now atleast.

Yes, it's simply amazing how many people will write such non-useful crap that serves no useful purpose.
Look, we've all been there. We all had to learn from the beginning at some point.
I'm also sick of people lobbing ignorant comments my way when it comes to some of the things I do for others, especially here on xda. Case in point ...
Over the last three days I've prepared a 36-page manual that describes, in great detail, how to do virtually everything on a ONE X. Here's the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1678308
It's sad when, after working an average of 70 hours per week as President an owner of my LED lighting company, plus having a 2-1/2-year-old at home, who's a wonderful challenge, plus having issues with my 82-year-old mother suffering from Alzheimers, I still MAKE time to help others, most especially here on xda. Why? Because it's the right thing to do. As I said above, we've all been there, and I'm quite sick and tired of so many others (THEY shall remain nameless), who can't spend a few extra seconds of their precious time to provide a better explanation than the simple "just do it in fastboot," or "use adb," etc.
Yes, I've now learned exactly what these two simple statements mean, but it really would have been nice, and far, far, far easier not just for me, but everyone if, instead of saying the following ...
flash it in fastboot
...they instead said something like ...
open a command prompt, navigate to your adb folder, and flash in fastboot using the following line:
fastboot flash recovery xxxxxxx.img
Wow, it took me an extra 10 seconds. Oh, my goodness, my fingers are now so sore. I think I'll head to the hospital. Be back later.
Peter
P.S. And don't anyone dare tell me, like someone did yesterday, that I should basically shut up and stop "sassing" (their word) the developers because they work so hard at what they do. You know, I probably work as hard if not MUCH harder than most of them, yet I will always try my very best to give some of my time to others. Again, as I said above, it's the right thing to do. You know, maybe if more people did just that, the world wouldn't be so full of self-centred, egotistical ingrates.

[Q] Help Bricked my One-X and cant find the stock RUU

So i got a little ahead of myself today when i unlock my AT&T One X bootloader. I tried to instal CWR and then Cyan9. Rooted and unlocked fine but i get the feeling CWR is still not compatible with the AT&T One-X bootloader.
So the problem im having is reinstalling the stock RUU and ROM. I found lists and lists of RUUs and tried one the is supposed to work but i have had little success. How can i find the stock RUU for my phone or better yet is there a CWR that i can instal to get Cyan9 running?
Im sorry im sure you guys get idiot questions like this all the time but i have spent hours googling with no luck. Im desperate to use my phone again!
Thanks for you input in advanced

Thank you so much. You dont think CM would work on top of this CWM? Or am i missing a whole nother aspect here?
Frankly, I'm not entirely sure what all is involved in porting CM9 from one platform to another, but I would suspect we'll have to wait for HTC to release the source to pull some of the drivers, etc before we make much progress. I would expect somebody to have started a thread on it in the development section if anybody were actively working on it that the moment.
Lol there is no cyanogen mod for this device yet. If there was, and it would've been in the development section. You shouldve known better not to flash the file if it isn't for this device.
You deserve the brick..

I'm guessing you flashed the unofficial CM9 build for the international One X? That phone has a completely different CPU and SoC (Tegra 3) from the AT&T version (Snapdragon S4) and ROMs are not compatible between the 2.
Either that or you flashed the ROM from some random, completely different phone. In either case, don't flash ROMs for other phones. It won't work, and its a good way to brick your phone.
Sounds like you are pretty correct when you said you've gotten a little ahead of yourself. Don't Google around and install things on your phone unless you are very comfortable with what you are doing. If you are a noob, your best bet is to stick to the Development subforum for your particular device here on XDA.
I've posted an index thread in Development, and it is your friend. Its a sticky at the top of the Development subforum, and you should always read the threads stickied to the top of the forums. I've kept it updated with the latest ROMs that will work on your phone. It also links the appropriate RUUs, as well as other tools.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237
Also, even flashing the correct RUU will not work, unless you relock the bootloader.

Anyway i think he got confused with all of the initials... He was saying CWR, Saying cyan9 should work on top of CWR. Hopefully was typo and meant CWM. No wonder you couldn't find any info. Sounds like he thought they were the same or went together. CWM stands for Clockwork Mod, not cyanogen. I may be wrong with this assumption. Anyway..

[PSA] Ice Cold Jelly AOKP = Brick [UPDATE]

This post is for anyone newly rooted and looking to flash a custom rom.
There is a popular AOKP rom out there named Ice Cold Jelly. From what I have heard, it is a well designed, full-featured rom, but you should be aware that it was created for the quad-core Tegra 3 version of the One X. There is no version of ICJ for the dual-core S4 One X/XL. [Edit: There is now--see below]
What's worse, however, is that attempting to flash ICJ on an S4 One X/XL may permanently brick your phone. This is because the two processors use different partition layouts. What happens when you try to flash ICJ?
absolutelygrim said:
The biggest problem with ICJ is it writes a kernel for a completely different processor to p4, 5, 6 and part of p7.
P4 is one of the most crucial partitions for these phones. It overwrites p4 with what is basically crap. Killing the phone.
Click to collapse
P4 is the extended partition table. When you overwrite that, the CPU has no way to find the OS. So it simply stops and goes into what is known as QHUSB_DLOAD mode.
If you are on 1.85 or earlier firmware, there is a fix for this problem though it's a bit tricky [EDIT: Maybe not--we've got at least one report of a 1.85 phone perma-bricked by ICJ]. If you are on 2.20. however, there is currently no known way to unbrick your phone [Edit: Other than paying for a jtag fix], and there may never be one. You will have created the proverbial paperweight. I have seen at least 10 people do this since root for 2.20 came out. Please don't add to the list.
Most people who run into these problems get them because they rush things and don't research enough beforehand. Still, if this post saves even one person from bricking, it will have served its purpose.
If you're coming to this post too late, here's the WIP thread for the potential fix.
[Update 12/7/12] The dev for ICJ has added asserts to the rom, meaning it will fail to flash on the S4 One X and nothing will happen (unless you've wiped /system first, in which case the asserts won't do anything). However, as there are plenty of older versions floating around on unofficial sites, it should still be avoided like the plague!
[Update 02/11/13] We've now got a dual core version here. So there's now really no excuse if you bricked.

i've been submitting alot of links to the resource page lately. might get a few more added. i want to make a nice op layout for it, with maybe drop down menus so people can see where they want to go before being overwelmed by so many links.

I see where you're coming from but, at the same time people are looking around for what to do. I figure that if a link to that page is the second post, or even in the OP, it would help a lot of people out from going to the international forum. Like we see quite a bit actually.
I found the index page and was immediately bombarded by links, If that had a drop down menu and what not to make it more organized....:victory:

That's what i said in my last post.
Can you please add to the OP something along the lines of
1.85 USERS, YOU MAY BE IN THE SAME BOAT AS 2.20 USERS IF YOU FLASHED ICJ
I just worked with someone who said he was on the 1.85 firmware and flashed ICJ.. No dice, device looks deader than a door nail, besides the fact that I see it going in and out of QDL mode..
No partitions show up, no writable state, nada.

That was mine haha DONT FLASH ICJ WHATEVER YOU DO!
I wonder if adding the processor for each phone to the forum titles would prevent people from flashing the wrong stuff.

There are warnings all over both forums. The problem is people don't read before they do this, and many of them pick up these roms from random websites and never even come here until they're bricked.

That explains things then.
If people want this ROM so damn bad why don't we just port it over?? Is that doable?

nope
Even if a port were do-able, people would still screw it up. It's human nature!

We had a port of a Tegra 3 Rom in this section for a little bit when Sense 4.1 came out. Worked perfectly fine and had no problems with installation.

You can port it. But just changing the updater script would still cause a brick

Honestly just let them brick, they should be more careful.

[Q] How to get out of Bootloader

I have an AT&T HTC One X, with android 4.1.1. I had been scouring the internet for about three weeks now trying to figure out how to Unlock the bootloader. I finally figured it out. Then I did a perm root, applying superuserSU and i tried to flash CyenogenMod 10.0.0, and i got stuck in the CyenogenMod 10 loader. So i went back, and cleared the cache and data and dalvik. Then it loaded, and it started at the home scree. It didn't take me through a set up or anything. Then I tried to touch the screen, and it wasn't responsive. I tried re-applying it and what not, and then it just stopped working, the CWM Recovery kept saying it E: Cant Mount /sdcard, and it would have a long list of things it couldn't mount (which was litterally everything, and now I'm trying to just reset it to the stock HTC so i can try again. Can any one walk me through how to reset it?
And this is what happens when you don't read and start doing **** without knowing what you're doing.
So lazy.
If you do enough research in this forum to tell me why your touchscreen didn't work in cyanogenmod. I'll help you get your phone working again.

Not to be rude but OP i agree with exad. You didnt do any reading or research. You didnt ask questions first. But I'll get you to a working phone.
Just go to twrp again. Download viperXL. "Mount" in twrp and drag viperxl onto phone and flash that. You'll boot

Pft inflatedtitan is nicer than me
Avoid cwm it has low compatibility for the one xl. twrp 2.3.3.1 or below is recommended. (but that won't fix cm touchscreen issue)

Then what will? I know, I was overly eager and crap. I get that, but i posted here for help. Not criticism. I'm used to working with Samsung, and Apple. But if you can help, please just say it and don't direct me to another page.

Touchscreen issues are to do with HTC changing the drivers for newer 4.1.1 ROMs. What you want to do is downgrade the touchpanel firmware using h8rift's excellent guide. That downgraded touchpanel firmware will then work with all ROMs and also with newer TWRPs. I'm running 2.5.0.0 with no dramas here.

Also the reason you boot looped in the first place was due to htc's infamous "s-on" security feature. While s-on, you are required to fastboot any img file instead of flashing through recovery. Examples are splash screens, kernels, recovery imgs. If you also follow the super easy s-off thread, this will allow your phone to surpass any security checks, allowing you to simply flash anything you want.
So until you s-off, you have to flash the ROM then immediately boot into boot loader and fastboot flash the boot.img. then the rom will boot up just fine

No worries. If this stuff doesn't seem easy, it is because it isn't. There are no user manuals, support systems or helpdesks. All of us on here are just a community of like minded people. We encourage new members and especially those who are eager to read, learn and contribute.
Good luck with your phone, you will love what you can do with it!

I dissagree entirely. It is easy. If it seems hard, the only reason would be that one did not have the patience to do a little light reading beforehand. And when you flat out give responses to easy questions it only encourages ignorance. The touchscreen issue is posted in just about all aosp Rom op and in stickies and a search would have brought up at least 10 threads with the issue documented aswell.
Honestly it is easy, but there's a lot to learn and watch out for so it can easily be overwhelming. After you toy around with it and see what command does what, what to flash, how to flash it, it gets a lot easier. Just lurk here often and learn the terminology and you'll be successful. You may get called a dumbass but that's because a lot of users here are really sick of people asking the same questions over and over, or they're just blatent idiots.
PS. Use the latest Nightly of CM 10.1, the new 3.4 kernel is supposed to be really slick.
Also, flash the 2.3.3.0 version of TWRP, versions 2.4 and above seem to have problems.

Thanks guys. Like I said before. I'm new to the whole HTC world of modding. Its much different from The GS3 and iPhone 5. I have my phone. Wroking, and I'm running CyanogenMod 10.1 and I have S-Off. Thanks again.
PS. Dude. If you don't want to help, you sound like your so important, so go find some thing better to do if you can't be helpful.

I think he means me D:
I don't think people like it when I point out their lazyness and that they need to read more.
Searching before posting is encouraged here on xda. There are stickies with forum rules indicating so. It's not that I don't want to help people. I just don't want to answer the same questions over and over because lazy people can't take the time to search or check the faq.
No one here is getting paid to help. So do the entire xda community a favor and help yourself first. Then, if after searching and reading through some stickies you still don't know the answer. then post your question.
