Anyone come from the photon - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

I'm debating on upgrading, and this is one of my considerations for a phone. I was wondering if it was worth it. I heard a lot of things are imbedded in the device. I appreciate anyone that chimes in.
Also, can you unlock and flash roms without losing 4g, or anything else? Does it get an upgrade past ginger?
I'm pretty happy with my photon, just lack of LTE kind of annoys me.. Since I am paying that dumb data fee.

Upgrade past ginger?
The device normally ships with 4.0.4, but there is an official update to 4.1.2 - I imagine the Q's ship with this now.
You can unlock and flash custom ROM's without losing LTE service.
If you have LTE in your area, I'm sure it would be a great upgrade. The built-in battery is a bit annoying, but the built-in SIM doesn't really bother me. If you want to travel internationally and swap SIM's, this is not possible (without hardware modifications). Also, if you want to put in a fat battery, that is not possible... I don't even think anyone has swapped the battery with a higher mAH, but I am satisfied with the battery life on the device - lasts me a full day typically, but I'm not a particularly "heavy" user either.
I'm paying the dumb 4gee fee, and no 4gee in sight for my area for a long time. Oh well, they still get the extra $10/mo.

I have the photon and the photon q. I think it a great upgrade. Even stock, I love my q.

I've flashed plenty of roms on here, and I'm pretty stable on Cyanmobile atm. I lose functionality of the camera and a few other small perks that make it impossible for me to flash ICS or JB as a daily driver. I was really on this for a long time, good reason was for the keyboard. I miss it from my TP2 days. So this one does get the JB update?

Yeah it does and if you need to flash back to stock ICS to update to 4.1 you could use rsd lite

No, there is a mSD (microSD) slot which you can insert what Moto says up to a 32gb SD card. I believe you can also use 64gb cards, but have to format them special...?
I have a 32gb card in mine.
FYI, there's also an "internal SD" which has supposedly 8gb of space, but I think around 5gb or so (4.59gb according to 'Storage') is actually available to the user.

[Q] Questions about the vibrant S 4g

I was thinking of getting the vibrant 4g but I have a couple of questions:
1. I already have the original sasmung vibrant on t-mobile. Is it worth it to upgrade to this phone?
2. How is the batery life on this? The original vibrant lasted me about a day so Im hoping for something longer.
3. How does the phone run with the 1gb internal memory? Does it cause any
limitations/ annoyances? Since most apps dont have the option to install
to the sd card, im a little worried about this.
It's a good device. yes the battery life is a bit short since the 4g radio is running. Plus it depends on what you do on it. But you got to get it rooted to make this device your own. We dont have any cool roms yet but they are coming. About the 1gb intern storage is lame but once you root the device your good with apps like app2sd and others. Plus their are tricks to getting you more space. But its really up to you. Tmo is getting some cool phones in the next few months like the gx2(this month) and others. So I would say if you want custom roms out the box then stay with that awesome vib, but wait for a device you really like. I hated this phone at first until I started learning about android and what this thing can and cant do.

Buying an XT720 - freezing issues with 2.2 roms?

I work for a cell phone company and very often see an issue with the xt720 where it freezes, but the lights at the bottom remain on. It can't be remedied unless you do a Battery pull.
My HD2 broke and my company has offered to let me buy the xt720 for very cheap, however I need a phone that won't constantly freeze on me.
so my question is - do the custom roms fix the freezing issue? And do the 2.2 roms help with the speed of the phone? I've read mixed reports.
thanks!

My feeling is that the freezing is related to crappy sd cards. In any case, once I replaced my sd card with a faster one that problem stopped even on stock 2.1. However, some people have problems even after replacing the sd card. So, there's likely some sort of sd card compatibility issue but I don't think anyone knows how to identify which sdcards will work and which ones won't. The one motorola shipped with XT720 is awful, though.
Same here. The Milestone XT720 came with a free 8GB Class 2 micro SDCard. When I replaced it with a class 10 the problem seemed to vanish.
But I also removed lookout so it might also be the culprit. Have to check on it...

Well most all the ones shipped with it were awful, They don't send the same one, I have 3 different brands with my best one being sandisk. And I think most of the time it is class 4 but I got one class 2. You could get lucky and get a decent brand. But Mz is right it is most def. an sdcard issue. tell them to throw in a kingston and it's a deal! lol. But if you get the sandisk I think you will be ok.
Hi rkarsk,
I understand that you are thinking about getting yourself this device. My advice "Don't Even Think". If its really cheap then go ahead. But If your looking for a better replacement for your previous device, then, its better If you don't consider this as an option. I must admit that we have great developers who work like hell to give us all the current features we are enjoying. Without them this phone is nothing now. Finally its up to you. But,remember this phone cannot do all that it promised in the advertisements and is also pretty outdated

I don't know about that, I have a Nexus S now but still love my XT. It really depends on if you don't mind maintaining it by keeping up with this forum and flashing ROM's and updates. With the right ROM and the right tweaks it's a pretty darn good phone. Just my opinion, it's an issue where both sides could be right. If you are getting it real cheap and don't have the opportunity to get something better I would say go for it, and this way when the opportunity arises when you can get another, you will have this phone to play with. With CM7 on the edge of being complete I feel I might not even have needed my nexus S, but good thing I got my Nexus really cheap. But I enjoy maintaining the XT, I like flashing new things and seeing the improvements, kind of like a hobby and I am learning something.
I agree with you but if the phone is under $100 with no opportunity to get something better cheap can't really go wrong I guess
I agree. This phone has plenty of potential but it also takes time to learn the hacks. Otherwise you have a 2.1 with a good camera. Upgrade it, commit to getting the tweaks right for you and it is a worthwhile investment and hobby. Plus it works when you call people too.
You guys have sold me . I have lots of experience flashing roms so I don't think I will find it too daunting. Played with the phone at work today, not bad at all!
For those of you with no freezing issues could you please post the model of your sd card? Might narrow down my search for one if I have any issues (or help someone in the future).
cheers
32gb class 10 from Topram. Bought it on eBay. Have purchased from them before so I know they sell "real" cards.
What I also found is that you need to overclock this phone to get the best from it.
Get yourself "Milestone Overclock" from this forum or from the Android Market and push your phone to 1000Mhz.
I have it running like that 24/7 for almost 7 months on various ROMS even though they say to use it only on stock ROM, and I rarely have a lag problem. If you leave it on stock CPU settings it can get a bit frustrating!

I have a doubt, since Google acquired Motorola, Is there any change of the boot-loader being unlocked. If so, does it mean we can further push the limitations of this device?

The XT bootloader was slated to be unlocked sometime in the last quarter of 2011, but here we are at the beginning of that quarter and nothing new. We can only upgrade only so far based on memory and other factors. At this point, I think that the CM7 builds are about as far as this phone can go. But hey, that is way better than the 2.1 that it was only given by the manufacturer.

Happened a few months ago, but I am pretty sure it isn't the whole Motorola company but just a piece of it. Can't remember exactly but there is a thread on it somewhere in here.

No, we've never been slated for an unlock. The conditions Motorola gave for unlocks are (1) carrier allows and (2) part of a regular update. We're never getting any updates.
Matt and Mark of Motorola support forums confirmed that XT720 isn't even on the table for unlocks (they've deleted their getsatisfaction so that thread is toast).
Ahh! I remember that now. Was just thinking and this thread popped in my mind.

yes, still using the original SD 8GB class 6 that came with the phone

both of them had their 8GB died on them
just replace it with a good 16GB or larger if you can afford it

Unusually lost apps on official jb leak(china)

I have moto atrix 2 and so do my gf.
Her moto is non rooted and ics upgraded also genuine. (She neva lemme tuch her phone ).
And mine is rooted and runs on jb leak(China).
I found that some times her fone's some apps are some times gone.
Yesterday she was playing farm frengy and in morning when she saw app was gone.
Also when i checked one More app was gone. Dat was all in one toolbox.( if other app were fone i don't know coz she doesn't care and i don't keep track).
Thing is apps are lost from fone. It happened some time when i bought my fone , when it was on gb.
I just download all on one toolbox to my gf's fone. Then i off my cell and from recovery menu i wiped cache and restarted her fone .. and guss what farm frengy appeared.
What was that.
Anyone had same problem

One toolbox? you mean 17 tools app? can't comment on that.
When I was new to XDA & I had posted query regarding 32gb class 10 card, I was lambasted for the fact that it had been covered a zillion times. Basically if it is a class 10 card it has been said since the advent of this device forum that it will cause problems later if not sooner namely in terms of apps mysteriously disappearing etc. I did not have apps missing by themselves ever but my issue was if ever my phone switched off due to battery full drain then it was pure misery wherein the phone would constantly reboot no end & this was when class 10 cards were pretty expensive. Then what I did was formatted the SD card ""on the phone"" & been using the app 'apps2sd' by Sam Lu & it has a functionality wherein it shows apps when installed as a grey 'X' icon for those apps which can be moved to SD but should ideally not be moved & from the very beginning I have always made sure I never move such apps to the SD. Don't ever use apps like 'link2sd' which complicate things on A2 especially. The highlight is for the lambasting that I had got that I have to accept that class 10 card would never work, I have to state till date I am running the very same SD card without any issues whatsoever so.... in any case, follow what I have stated above, may work for you, I use Rom Toolbox Pro but so far I have not tinkered setting to increase catching speed function for SD. Best of luck. Also it had been said that all apps should necessarily be installed to internal phone memory only but I don't do that yet & I'm surviving.
My gfs fone wiz has genuine ics upgraded os.. i haven't touch its software she has 4 gb normal card, i mean no class mentioned but m pretty sure not c10.
What now..??
And thanks for reply sir

In that case, yet format the SD card on the phone by first backing up personal files to a computer then ensure that SD card is not selected as default storage location and then also never install any apps to SD.
I observed you're all across the boards plagued with multiple problems besides this such as extreme battery drain, no network etc etc, so if you're in warranty ask for a replacement, would bode better for you.

the situation with class 10 sdcards depends on your phone, if youre lucky then your phone will support class 10 cards without any issues.. i per se have never tried a class 10 card but my friend with an A2 has and even he doesnt have any problems. I have always used a Class 6, first one a sandisk 16gb one and now using a samsung 32gb. Class 10 cards are expensive than class 6 obviously but class 6 cards are hard to find at the actual price in the market here. i bought mine for a bargain price from a seller on Olx.
As for the apps on sdcard and phone, even i dont install any apps on the sdcard, just games so that even if my phone is connected to the laptop in Mass Storage mode i can still use my apps..

[Q] SD card not mounting, "blank or unsupported file system".

When I putt he SD into my phone (currently running Paranoid KANG droid 2.32) I actually get nothing more than an occasional "SD has been removed" message. However, when I put the card into my old OG droid (running Cyanogenmod 7) i get the "unsupported file system" error. This has happened before, and I just had to wait it out before the SD recovered on its own. It is not doing this now. (yes I am an idiot for still using it despite my 32 gigs of internal storage). I have a feeling it is formatted as RAW due to a formatting issue, but I can't get anything else (pc or other devices) to recognize the card, other than my OG droid. So what I want to know, is if there is a way to force mount the card, or give a PC control over the sdcard path and force mount it some way through the PC (effectively turning my phone into an external card reader, because traditional methods don't work). I need a workaround for this, because there are dozens of pictures of my family, puppies, and friends on it that I don't want to lose.
Back up the card of you can, it sounds like it's dying on you. This phone really s3ms to kill cards, I've already gone through 2 32gig cards.
I had a 32GB Sandisk Ultra MicroSD card, and by chatting with Sandisk support, I am going to exchange my dead card for a working card. BTW, while you can, salvage the data you can, because it starts out like that, before becoming completely unusable.
I've went through two SanDisk. They are easy to work with, just get the ball rolling on the replacement.
Like the others said, get your data backed up as soon as you can.

Had 4 of these cards for a year now and not one hiccup. I'd say whatever is happening to them, its something you are doing to crap them, not the vendors. ALways backup your critical data, but if you treat these cards properly they will work and last as well as any.
No, you CAN use it on someone elses network, just not T-mobile as it doesn't do hdspa+ 1700, 1900... There's even a bounty out for that elsewhere on xda, to enable these bands, I believe it's currently at over $200.
And no, I'm not doing crap to the SD card. I've had it for over two years, used it on a different phone before that, never did anything different and it just died out of the blue. I'm not a noob, I would know if I had done something to it.
You would be pretty pissed off too if all your data was deleted, the phone you spent many many hours working to pay for did not work and when you ask for help someone blames you instead of helping. But I guess it's easier to blame than to help out right?
I get that part. However, don't get mad that it doesn't work fully for the network is wasn't designed for. That was my biggest part. I know there's a bounty. However, its been up for forever and nothing has come of it. I can't stand seeing people gripe about this phone because its not literally magic. Verizon's stuff is locked down, always has been, probably always will. Its a different radio/modem/antenna set than the tmo and at&t versions. It was meant to run on Verizon's network. Period.

hi guys, i had same problem, but then i set this sandisk ultra to my nokia xpress music and there was everything,,, my arc s cant open it anymore but nokia opens... try to reset your sd s to others phone...

How do you guys do it w/o sdcard....

I'm trying to find out how you guys manage without a sdcard...do you carry a otg cable and usb stick always with you... Just asking if I should trade in my HTC ONE M8...for a OpP...Can you please explain....
I use air droid / es file manager to access file wireless.
I'm talking about your nandroids backups...and personal stuff incase I wanted to change roms.... My SdCard holds all my personal stuff and when I flash other roms to test ....my sdcard does not get touched...
^^ the one plus one has a "virtual" SDcard... which all data stays perstiant on between flashing...IIRC
So your saying is that this Virtual SDCard...uses up the 64gig that the unit comes with.???
not all 64...looking at my phone it says 54gb total
64 - UsedBySystem = More than enough
For Nandroid backups I use a USB Stick and then store it on the server, for pictures or so I use Airdroid.
Ok guys thanks...now the question...do I trade..my M8..to 1+1... Or wait for 1+2..

As previously stated, your personal data is never wiped unless you actually do it yourself, this is standard for any device that doesn't use an external sd card. The 64gb overall storage is partitioned in such a way that you end up with about 55gb for yourself, with the rest taken up by the ROM and other system needs. And yes, I'd ditch the HTC for this phone in a heartbeat.

Like everyone else stated, your files will remain untouched while flashing a new rom (unless and until u manually wipe them from recovery). I keep my nandroid on my phone itself, but i actually prefer having my OTG pendrive along with me all the time. i have made a backup of all my important files on it as well. reg jumping from M8 to the One, 1+2 is still some time away from us (late Q2 or maybe Q3 of 2015), so 1+1 is still your best bet. I had a nexus 5, sold it off to get 1+1. no regrets! heck, the lollipop roms here are as stable as the nexus 5 ones.
I had the S4, then M8, then nexus 5 (16gb). Didn't have the nexus that long, and sort of missed having the extra storage. But didn't miss the SD card coming to OPO as theres plenty with the 64gb version. If anything I'm more put off by 16 GB phone models even with the sd card. The nexus isn't too bad as it's pretty bloat free but with the 16gb S4 or M8 I was still mindful of the internal storage as you lose a fair amount for the OS and you can't move all apps to the SD. Hopefully manufacturers ditch the 16gb models soon. Even a 32gb model with and external SD would be fine, but 16gb feels a bit stingey these days.
