Buying an XT720 - freezing issues with 2.2 roms? - Milestone XT720 General

I work for a cell phone company and very often see an issue with the xt720 where it freezes, but the lights at the bottom remain on. It can't be remedied unless you do a Battery pull.
My HD2 broke and my company has offered to let me buy the xt720 for very cheap, however I need a phone that won't constantly freeze on me.
so my question is - do the custom roms fix the freezing issue? And do the 2.2 roms help with the speed of the phone? I've read mixed reports.
thanks!

My feeling is that the freezing is related to crappy sd cards. In any case, once I replaced my sd card with a faster one that problem stopped even on stock 2.1. However, some people have problems even after replacing the sd card. So, there's likely some sort of sd card compatibility issue but I don't think anyone knows how to identify which sdcards will work and which ones won't. The one motorola shipped with XT720 is awful, though.

Same here. The Milestone XT720 came with a free 8GB Class 2 micro SDCard. When I replaced it with a class 10 the problem seemed to vanish.
But I also removed lookout so it might also be the culprit. Have to check on it...

Well most all the ones shipped with it were awful, They don't send the same one, I have 3 different brands with my best one being sandisk. And I think most of the time it is class 4 but I got one class 2. You could get lucky and get a decent brand. But Mz is right it is most def. an sdcard issue. tell them to throw in a kingston and it's a deal! lol. But if you get the sandisk I think you will be ok.

Hi rkarsk,
I understand that you are thinking about getting yourself this device. My advice "Don't Even Think". If its really cheap then go ahead. But If your looking for a better replacement for your previous device, then, its better If you don't consider this as an option. I must admit that we have great developers who work like hell to give us all the current features we are enjoying. Without them this phone is nothing now. Finally its up to you. But,remember this phone cannot do all that it promised in the advertisements and is also pretty outdated

I don't know about that, I have a Nexus S now but still love my XT. It really depends on if you don't mind maintaining it by keeping up with this forum and flashing ROM's and updates. With the right ROM and the right tweaks it's a pretty darn good phone. Just my opinion, it's an issue where both sides could be right. If you are getting it real cheap and don't have the opportunity to get something better I would say go for it, and this way when the opportunity arises when you can get another, you will have this phone to play with. With CM7 on the edge of being complete I feel I might not even have needed my nexus S, but good thing I got my Nexus really cheap. But I enjoy maintaining the XT, I like flashing new things and seeing the improvements, kind of like a hobby and I am learning something.
I agree with you but if the phone is under $100 with no opportunity to get something better cheap can't really go wrong I guess

I agree. This phone has plenty of potential but it also takes time to learn the hacks. Otherwise you have a 2.1 with a good camera. Upgrade it, commit to getting the tweaks right for you and it is a worthwhile investment and hobby. Plus it works when you call people too.

You guys have sold me . I have lots of experience flashing roms so I don't think I will find it too daunting. Played with the phone at work today, not bad at all!
For those of you with no freezing issues could you please post the model of your sd card? Might narrow down my search for one if I have any issues (or help someone in the future).
cheers

32gb class 10 from Topram. Bought it on eBay. Have purchased from them before so I know they sell "real" cards.

What I also found is that you need to overclock this phone to get the best from it.
Get yourself "Milestone Overclock" from this forum or from the Android Market and push your phone to 1000Mhz.
I have it running like that 24/7 for almost 7 months on various ROMS even though they say to use it only on stock ROM, and I rarely have a lag problem. If you leave it on stock CPU settings it can get a bit frustrating!

I have a doubt, since Google acquired Motorola, Is there any change of the boot-loader being unlocked. If so, does it mean we can further push the limitations of this device?

The XT bootloader was slated to be unlocked sometime in the last quarter of 2011, but here we are at the beginning of that quarter and nothing new. We can only upgrade only so far based on memory and other factors. At this point, I think that the CM7 builds are about as far as this phone can go. But hey, that is way better than the 2.1 that it was only given by the manufacturer.

Happened a few months ago, but I am pretty sure it isn't the whole Motorola company but just a piece of it. Can't remember exactly but there is a thread on it somewhere in here.

No, we've never been slated for an unlock. The conditions Motorola gave for unlocks are (1) carrier allows and (2) part of a regular update. We're never getting any updates.
Matt and Mark of Motorola support forums confirmed that XT720 isn't even on the table for unlocks (they've deleted their getsatisfaction so that thread is toast).

Ahh! I remember that now. Was just thinking and this thread popped in my mind.

yes, still using the original SD 8GB class 6 that came with the phone
and yes that card is very crappy, a few friends of mine we all got the phone the exact same day
both of them had their 8GB died on them
just replace it with a good 16GB or larger if you can afford it

ok im thint bad of king about switching to the g2x form my vibe and i was wondering is it really that bad of a phone. i keep reading all of these complaints and im wondering should i make the jump
Don't listen to what other people say. The phone is great, as long as it doesn't shutdown by itself. Screen bleed isn't as bad as people say. It's not noticeable with normal use... Only on a black background with Maximum Brightness, and in a dark room. It's blazing fast. Update baseband makes GPS lock instantly. Screen looks AMAZING. Build quality is really good as well. Don't forget that it runs stock Android... So development on this phone is great. Install any rooted 2.3.3 OTA ROM, or CyanogenMod 7.1 Nightly, and you're good to go.
omg thanks for yur input
As always, test one out in the store if you can. You might get a slightly different experience at home, though.
Just like there's plenty of phones with some problems, there's plenty of working ones as well.

I think this statement says a lot. To say a phone is great when it's not malfunctioning says a lot about the phone. If I were the OP I would not take that as a vote of confidence. That being said, OP don't buy the G2X, it's fine I suppose if you're someone unfortunate to have already purchased it and can't get out of it, but I would hardly suggest jumping on board with it at this juncture. My advice is to just be patient and wait for the Hercules or Nexus Prime. The G2X is an unstable phone that reboots itself and freezes randomly. Why jump onto a sinking ship? There are better options just over the horizon, wait for those.

Neither do I. The only problems I have are a useless FFC, glitchy A2DP, and an uncertain future.
Still... someone who comes here asking for advice and reassurance before purchasing a G2x is well served by strong words of caution. This is the unfortunate truth.
Awesome phone. I've gotten good ones and bad ones... In my experience there were more good then bad..once you get a good one, then in my opinion everything else sucks (that's available now in us.).
Don't listen to others saying no. I sold a vibrant for this and couldn't be happier. Even having gotten a bad few, I still love this device..
Just imagine every g2x line all the good ones.. I think it would be hard to beat.

So the OP will have to buy a phone based on chance...?
Honestly, I've exchanged my phone once already (the only reason my first one went back is because I thought it had a faulty GPS...turns out they all do!) and I really don't want to be bothered calling T-Mobile every two days until I'm on my nth replacement to get one that actually works.
To the OP, honestly I think ever phone will have its own problems so you just gotta look at the forums to see which ones you can live with.
People's biggest complains with this phone is that:
It restarts randomly (FroYo and Gingerbread).
Has a screen bleed (although better in GB).
The GPS doesn't function the way it should (mostly people complaining from a bad lock on, I personally can't get it to stay locked on for an extended period of time, with RunKeeper it looks like I'm a drunk and spiking up to mountains and running over lakes).
EDIT: And the most annoying thing that happens to me since the GB update: slow downs into oblivion. The phone will become unusable at random times for a good 10 minutes, or until a battery pull (because I'm not able to shut it down since it is unresponsive)
Then there are some that don't experience any of this...
I say take everything people say with a grain of salt. Obviously people make rash comments that stem from their emotional instability. That being said. I recently purchased the G2x, after hearing a lot of complaining about it. YOu must realize, one is much more likely to go out of his way to make known a complaint, than a praise. Human nature I suppose.
The G2x I got, 2.3.3 July baseband, is flawless. It is an amazing phone. No restarts, no bleed, instant GPS lock.
Im not stating that there are bad phones out there, and I empathize with those that may have recieved a few, but let the first impressions go, and realize that they are not ALL bad.
Dude this phone is beast I had mind since launch and it works great everyday, u will be very happy, to the people still having trouble with there phones take it back get a new one and if its past the 14 days send it to LG u have a year

I dont see how someone can suggest buying a phone that with a few exchanges you might end up with a good one. That makes no sense. My G1 out the box worked, my Mytouch out the box worked, my Nexus One out the box worked, my mytouch 4g out the box worked, hell my HD2 running Android works better than my G2X, and yes, I have tried several.
Dont get me wrong as I must say WHEN my G2X is running right its balls to the walls fast. I think its probably the fastest Android phone available...as long as I dont need GPS or the phone hasnt shut its self off (if I could be so lucky as to have mine reboot) its not bad, not bad at all. Unfortunately I need my GPS, I am a truck driver and rely on my GPS.
I think honestly its an issue with dual cores right now, I would wait for a bit like others have said and pick up something a bit later. Perhaps even wait for ICS since I believe that will be more optimized for dual and quads.
Its your gamble. If you dont mind possibly sending it back, trying out another one with the clear understanding that its a crap shoot at best if its going to work or not go for it. Me personally? I would not buy it again knowing what I know now and what I have been through with this phone.

I totally agree with this. The people in this thread that are urging the OP to go out and get this phone are not being realistic. Some people don't want to keep swapping phones until they get one that doesn't malfunction. Sure the G2X is a great phone WHEN IT WORKS. The problem is those times when it IS NOT working. For people who are locked into their phone and can't leave this may be tolerable. For people who don't mind having to hack their phone for it to have any semblance of reliability may be tolerable. However, for many people that is unacceptable. I think it's best that the OP at least be made aware of the reality of the situation (the state of the G2X and other phones coming soon) and let him make his decision. My opinion is that it doesn't make sense to jump on board with a phone that may potentially have to swap and swap over and over...a phone that even T-Mobile doesn't really want to offer support for anymore. To me it makes more sense to wait since there are better devices coming out in the near future.
If you're going to leave it stock then you may have issues. If you're planning to mod it and flash alternative roms then you're going to love the phone. The hardware is amazing. LG/T-Mobile's version of the android software is buggy.

What he said is correct, stock form doesn't make the hardware justice. I have a vibrant and got my wife the g2x. The first one we got we returned due to random restarts and signal loss. Second one worked ok but returned and cancelled contract because Costco had it for half the price with accessories included. Now my wife hates me tinkering with her phones which I love to do. But after so much complaints from her about not receiving or able to make calls and phone slowing down I convinced her to let me install a custom rom. I installed eagleblood 1.05 and she hasn't complained once anymore and after setting it up and going back to my vibrant which I also run a custom rom and kernel, made my vibe seem to move slow as a turtle. And the screen just looked so much more vibrant as well. It also felt much more "comfortable" , "sturdy" in my hand than my vibrant. Bottom line is if you are lucky enough to get one that doesn't have hardware problems and you are willing to install custom roms on it, then go for it otherwise I would suggest you stick with your vibrant.

In my opinion, one in 3 or 4 of the original phones are good. I've ended up with one of the good ones after 5 tries.
As Sarni sez', this phone is a beast. Does everything I ask of it. Love the full page internet with Dolphin hd. I sold my Sensation and never looked back.
Now LG.......they just stink period.
But my G2X is awesome, everything works. I'm still on Froyo and rooted, I don't want the update.

List Of All Thunderbolt Problems Since Launch

We all know the thunderbolthas been plagued with problems since its launch. First the launch date was delayed. Now the GB update that has been delayed for months gets released and pulled immediately due to more bugs. I have read about people who complain so much that they are given free replacement phones of their choosing. I would like to do the same and try and get the new nexus phone. So I need your help with making a list of all the thunderbolt problems since launch so I can make a good argument for why I should get a new phone. Thanks guys!
Just to add my 2 cents
You have to remember that as with most forums, you usually only see the problems and not the ones with good units and that one or two people talking in a forum thread or maybe a handful of people posting multiple threads can make it seem alot worse then it really is. I have never had an issue with my bolt since getting it on launch. I was first on line at bestbuy and it has worked great since the moment I activated it.
Also the launch was not delayed. Neither HTC or Verizon gave a specific date on release. Everybody was basing the release off rumors and a mistaken bestbuy ad...
when you say 'new phone', are you trying to get Verizon to allow you to exchange your TB for something else?
if so, that's not that hard. you just need to call and complain a few times(bring up battery life & call quality - data speeds couldn't hurt to) and after a few calls & complaining about how you wish you never got this phone they should offer to exchange it for you so long as you got the phone somewhat recently.
if you bought the phone back at launch though then the most they would do(other then offer a warrenty exchange) is allow you to get a different phone at the upgrade price instead of full retail, then you'd still have your TB to sell on craigslist or something.

The thunderbolt was the best choice at the time and I don't see any reason to change it now. Nothing newer is too much better. I think the bionic looks and feels cheaper and that's before you consider the locked bootloader... major con for me... the grass ain't always greener. Just sayin.

Charge would be nice, but if I want one bad enough ill buy one. Trying to get one for free is lame.

You need to stop believing all the internet crap you read. I've had a couple of phones that were FAR, FAR worse than the Thunderbolt and I never got free upgrades to replace them. The people that say they did probably took an early upgrade on another line. I ended up going back to old phones with the POS devices. So yeah, if you think I calling them liars or misrepresenting the truth, that's EXACTLY what I'm doing. And I know for a fact none of them can prove it.

The ONLY reason why they gave me a bionic is they tried to charge me twice for not returning a defective device two separate times. Even then I had to fight them for it, first they offered to pay my data for a month. I guess their logic was "sorry we tried to steal $1200 from you, here's $30".
There was no early upgrade or anything, I told the guy to just cancel my contact. I had no intention of canceling, look what else is out there. If you really think you can get a free phone just because of the issues you've had with it good luck.

There was no early upgrade or anything, I told the guy to just cancel my contact. I had no intention of canceling, look what else is out there. If you really think you can get a free phone just because of the issues you've had with it good luck.

That's certainly above and beyond a few complaints about a device that works otherwise! Wow... That's pretty screwed up.
Problems with the Thunderbolt (STOCK)
Now granted i dont know if verizon has pushed any radio upgrades, i do that myself and the first radio upgrade i got fixed my issue.
1. GPS takes forever to lock. I walk in with a friend tried to get him a discount and showed him how MY thunderbolt wil lock in seconds where the thunderbolt, charge and nearly every other android phone they have took over 5 minutes to lcok (i never locked before we left).
2. Battery life on the stock is disgusting in comparison to clean ROMs. (my opinin you shouldnt have to root the phone to get all the specs to work correctly)
thats really all i can think of.
My main issue with this phone is battery life when on a sense based rom (any sense based rom sucks battery life a really fat guy with a milkshake), but I have an upgrade on my account and am definitely grabbing a nexus when it comes out

Lol its dumb but its life. I dont support it nor am i against it. I had HTC Touch Pro 2 i had for over 2 years. It was a fantastic phone for the era that the Iphone came out. Sure apps were very very few and far between but being able to get ROms that were similar to HTC's 2.1 or3.0 was awesome. The only problem i ever had with the phone was i was plagued with BSOD's constantly after unlocking. But as we all know its based on the phone you get, my brother and sister both had them and were unlocked overclocked and had 0 problems...again i know where the guys coming from we all play the system at one point or another to get what we want. He was just a little more blunt about it than most people would have been. Next time bro just be a little more incognito about the whole idea behind it. Its like Backtrack. Its a tool to "test your wireless security" and you know 80% of the people that use the tool are not testing their secruity with it.
It's threads like this that made me remember why I left in the first place. I had hoped things had changed... guess not...

Returned my Flex 2

you know, I have been with LG for quite some time now, but I do have to say that the LG G Flex 2 was a huge disappointment. I have owned the G2, Original G Flex, G3 and the Flex 2 and it was by far the worst phone. I absolutely loved my G2 and then got the Original Flex to try out and loved it (except for the screen res and burn in effect). When the G3 came out I loved it but had a few problems, like sticking with the SD801 was a bad decision and made the phone laggy due to the screen, and there were ways to speed it up and it turned out to be a great phone.
But now that LG has started to gain popularity with their mobile devices, I am worried that they are going to let it go to their heads and start cutting corners. I am going to try LG one more time to see how they handle this disappointment, and trust me they know this phone bombed because the world has let them know how bad it really is. I hope that the G4 is going to blow everyone away and restore all of us die hard fans' faith in the company. I know alot of people are going to this from the G2, and are disappointed in the speed of the phone. so if you dont mind a big phone, I went with the Nexus 6 and could not be happier, this phone blows me away by how fast and responsive it is. this phone is a Rooting Person's Dream lol
I do have to say i will miss my LG, but for people out there wanting to upgrade now, I think if you can wait just alittle bit longer, then wait. this phone isnt worth the upgrade and wait for the G4. but if you are looking for an amazing phone, I have to say go with the Nexus 6
You should have hung in there for the update it runs fantastic now all the transitions are smooth and the phone is very good now
Nexus 6 was just too big for me.
If your only issue with the phone was the lag then you should have waited a bit..., I personally love this phone.

Was all the lag fixed with a firmware update, then?
Not all but the most.
I'm on 10b and its good now.
10d is better but not available for Vodafone germany. The software/ui wasn't optimized for the snapdragon 810.
Gta San Andreas runs very smooth with max settings
I personally haven't had a lot of lag. But I just got my phone 4/4 and the update had already been released. What I do have is battery issues. Neither my nor my friends phone will read my samsung 64 GB sd card and infact if i put the card into either phone it immediately corrupts the data forcing a reformat.
This combined with the relatively absent dev community is likely going to force me into a Galaxy s6 on the 10th
That being said There are some things this phone did completely right and I wish Samsung would have stepped their sh*t up a notch.
Frankly the current offerings fail to excite me and these upgrades feel lackluster.
From my galaxy s5 with a sweet Dev community to the G flex 2 with *cricket cricket* no dev community.
TBH if i didn't have the above mentioned issues and little things
(for example smart remote not deploying into notification panel despite the fact that i chose home wifi and was connected to it., The youtube app not letting me pause a video.) That may be Lolliflop issues and I would be surprised if a lot of those type of bugs go away when 5.1 hits.
Lately Android seems to trying to be more iPhone like meanwhile apple is stealing Android features by the bushel and becoming more android like.
I will likely never buy an apple product do to the lack of transparency and also hatred for the walled garden.
That being said android needs to wow me. I kind of wish I had waited to pull the trigger on upgrading but I traded in my phone after a year with sprint and now Have to take a step up.
It looks like it's going to be an s6 for me.
But I curse the loathsome curr dogs Samsung for taking away my microSd and My removable battery.
But alas I need to get a real phone with a dev community.
Or else start learning to dev myself.

I think a lot of dev are waiting to see if this phone bootloader will be unlockable because the first og G Flex was able to be rooted but the bootloader was locked on tight that's the reason it also lacked in the development section.

The s5 had knox and it was still defeated. If enough devs get this phone ( big if) someone will defeat it.
If i were lg i would be trying to do everything I could to move phones.
That would include pandering to the modders.
Lets be honest here most of us here on are the most tech savvy people in our family/friend circles.
At least i am. And all my friends and family follow my lead as far as phones.
Everybody has a galaxy s5 in my family. It's because I recommended it to them. I definitely can't recommend LG based on the super locked boot loader. Nor the issues I've had. Tbh im prob returning for an s6. As long as bootloader is unlocked.

Your right but it's very risky for these devs to just put out the cash for a phone that your to not sure is going to succeed in the development department especially with the locked boot loader. The original Flex was a nightmare when it came down to development but overall the phone was great so I stuck with it for a whole year.
I was waiting for the flex 2 but saw too many reasons to not get it so I decided to buy the nexus 6 right out for $500 brand new sealed and I don't regret it at all and plus I still have my upgrade available so I could use it for a device well worth in quarter 4.

Hey guys, Sorry havent had the chance to check in, but I am glad that most have had updates to fix alot of the problems. I am on sprint and 9 times out of 10 sprint is the last to provide any updates for a phone for some reason. I really did like the phone and im sure I will try LG again in the future, but I didnt want to be stuck with a phone I was having so many issue's with until they decided to throw out an update, and we know sometimes that can be months. The Nexus 6 is big but I love it and the battery life is ALOT better than my G3 and the Flex 2, but nothing has beaten the G2. I sure wish LG could find a way to bring back the best of performance and battery life like they did on the G2.
just out of curiousity, are any of you guys on sprint? I was just curious if sprint did release an update

yea, i cant seem to make up my mind so i just try them all... lol
but coming from LG's I hate how the USB OTG doesnt auto mount thru the UI, I loved that feature. and Stickmount is ok but it still doesnt make it work with all apps
also, just out of curiousity... I have had LG for awhile and liked the UI, but the Flex 2 was the first time it was just super laggy and I never really cared for other launchers, but now that I have the Nexus 6 and have been playing with Stock Google and AOSP roms, I didnt care for the Google Launcher so I started playing with others and really like Apex. It works great for me and I can customize and setup just how I like..
So has anyone with the Flex 2 tried any other launchers on it and if so how did it work. was it an instant transformation or was there still some issues?

Has Anyone Got a Reply or Fix from 1+? Horrible experience!

Soooo i got the multi touch issue on my phone, the TOP half of my screen is out of wack! I sent them the support request, i flashed all the roms trying to if it would fix it but no go!
i've been waiting for almost 2 weeks for a dam reply from their support, i had strange feeling ordering this phone was too good to be true!!!!
Has anyone who also has this issue gotten a reply from their support or a fix or a whole phone replacement? This will be the last china based phone i will ever order and i will never suggest any to anyone ever either as i did with one+!
I'm going back to Nexus devices!
Thanks!
Pissed off IT guy!
Do they have a phone number you can try them at?
I agree that it is unacceptable they haven't replied to you yet... But I wouldn't write off all of the Chinese phone companies because of a bad experience with OnePlus.

The problem is, i am located in canada and it was actually quite costly for me to get my hands on this device. It was roughly 630$ canadian... Very close to the price of a Nexus6 or a Moto X. I've had every pure Google phone Since G1. i still currently own a N5 and it works flawlessly since the release! My Nexus 1 still works perfectly! in fact i have never had this sort of problem with any phone i have owned and i work in the mobile industry so our company has all kinds of test handsets. I am completely floored by the poor customer service and horrible website with no updates about what they are trying to do to remedy the issue.
i mean if your car was 4 months old and the engine started running on 3 cylinders i'm sure the company wouldn't ask you what wrong and tell you to wait outside the door for 2 weeks while they "Tried to figure out a fix" . I can totally understand they want to try to figure out a software fix but after looking over some posts, it really seems to be a hardware issue due to the lack of poor design flaw and bad engineering.
So i am sure they don't want to bite the bullet and replace all the devices due to a loss of $$$$! and that is why i will never do business with a small company again!
Sorry for the rant im really pissed off!
welcome to the club :crying:
They will don't repair mine 'cause i have some micro dents on the frame... I'm waiting the replacing display from Aliexpress, and after replaced, I will sell this Chinese sh|tty phone.
I will never buy another product from OPO, WORST assitance experience in my all life.

Can only share my experience with them. Had a few touch issues with my phone when I bought it, around September last year. Sent them a ticket from their website reporting my issues and offered to send them videos if they needed. They replied saying yes so I did. Produced about 10 videos with different scenarios and test apps that perfectly showcased my problems. They called it hardware issues and offered to replace it. So they did. They are not quick to reply. They are not willing to discuss anything else or give any other info. Whole process took 2 months.
Old phone had a little dent on the chromed frame, they didn't care. New phone came with the same problem. I kind of suspected as much lol.
Didn't care much, soon after a new firmware was available, 38R I think, that solved just about any problem I had. I still get a random ghost swipe like once a week. Doesn't bother me the slightest.
I am now on one of the lastest cm12 nightlies and I can't really find any problem by all with my phone. Don't even want to update to 12.1 since it works so well lol.
I'm impressed with this phone. Price point was and probably still is great. Battery is huge. Screen isn't as vibrant as my old s3 but its still very good. 3gb ram is what every single android phone should have, period. Blazing fast. Its a tad too big but I manage. Loads of customization. I don't ask for anything else from a pocket computer.

Yes,you can unroot your phone root and unroot..
to those complaining about OPO is a ****ty phone. No it's not, every phone brand (big or small) released have about 1-2% faulty phone's,that why so many Samsung and iPhone's complains can be found, they sell millions of phone's and several thousands are faulty, but that doesn't make it a ****ty phone..first batch of galaxy S3 had so bad ram management that to many (30+ apps) made the phone unusable,it took some the best kernel dev's more than 6 month to correct Samsung's gruling mistake and that was without Samsung's kernel source code released and that is only one example..
Actually Samsung was one of the major reason why "SRD"GokhanMoral left xda

Is S7 worth buying?

Seems like every phone has problems and Android itself has endless problems. The Nexus 6P has an LTE bug where you can't receive calls and it hasn't been fixed in months. The OnePlus forums are full of people hating their phones and the latest OTA for Marshmallow bricks some of their phones. I don't know what to buy. There are lots of complaints about the S7 here also. I am coming from BlackBerry and was totally satisfied but there is no way to live in the modern world without an Android phone or iPhone it seems.
Is the S7 still worth buying, all else considered equal?
I guess main problem is Android 6.
Further, you have to worry about Samsung knox, locked bootloader, etc. when you want to root.
But, the device itself is great. Just use another launcher and you will be happy (at least, I am... except for worrying that root may be gone due to updates on day)
Oh, also, I disabled all updates, so no security updates aer installed. That might be a problem too...
I am not sure I want to root. This will be my first Android phone. I need it for work and travelling and it has to work. I know the device itself is great and I really want one. I just don't know if I missed something since now that the phone has been out for a while people are complaining as much about this phone as every other phone
I don't know anything about launchers or Android or anything. How can I get started learning after I buy a phone? Thank you.

If you don't know anything about root, android, whatsoever, you won't have to worry. Just buy the thing and it'll work. That's enough for the average crowd. The non average are reading/posting on xda They want to know the ins and outs of their device. They want control of their device without being restricted by anything or anyone.

Oh I respect that completely. I am a developer and I have played around with phones in the old days, had a hacked Nokia with custom startup etc. As far as this device goes at this point I am too busy with other things and don't expect to play around with it. There is only so much time in a day!
I know you guys are the experts which is why I am asking. As far as Android itself goes, I hate it. It has a worse security track record than Windows and the quality is worse too! They just found the whole disk encryption with Qualcomm chips is broken[1][2][3]. It's one gigantic embarassment after the next with Android.
I want something that's going to work as well as possible given the crappy software environment it has to work with. If it wasn't for you brave guys breaking your phones the rest of us wouldn't have access to anything nearly as good as we have now! Thanks!

Exploits are found all the time on ios,Windows and a android, basically if it's a system built by humans there's almost always going to be some type of flaw somewhere. As much as this is pretty big one the chances of it actually affecting you are probably nil. I would get the device and enjoy it for what it is, rather than worrying over this and that.

I don't think that's true. There are more fanboys for Samsung phones than people willing to bash something they spent 800 bucks on.
I saw some scary threads here like the one on broken rear camera lenses. The replacements are on ebay by the millions already. I don't understand how companies can put out faulty products and charge so much for them. But silly me, I ordered one yesterday. It hasn't shipped yet. But I'll be unhappy if it has problems. It's supposed to be the best you can get. What else is there?
Hopefully not a complete threadjack
So I am currently running a rooted S4 and am thinking it's time to upgrade. And don't hate me for asking this: Now that we have root available for the S7, is this the phone to get or should I hold out to see what the next Nexus phone actually is? Would like to keep the SD card port that doesn't seem to appear in any of the nexus rumors. Am worried that now the root method is out, it'll be patched before the Nexus release and my choice becomes moot. Thanks.

If I could choose, then I would get a device with 128Gb memory without SD card.
Why? Because google f*cked up Android with SD cards. They just don't get it that we want control over the media on the SD card!
But, I like this S7 because of the camera, display and weather proof (let's try to be careful and don't drop the phone in the toilet please...)
