Best small phone... Really small (smaller than 3.5") - Android General

I have an LG Nitro HD. I like it fine, but I have been wanting another device to play around with. I will be getting a Samsung Galaxy S4 eventually, so I'd like my tinkering device to be something other than a large screen. I would love something that has a really small screen, but not a really crappy device.
Most things that I look at have had single core, 800 MHZ (or worse) CPU's. I think what I am going to end up with will be the Sony Ericson Xperia mini Pro. It has 1 GHZ Scorpion processor, 512 MB of RAM, and supports USB-OTG which is all pretty cool. http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_xperia_mini-3947.php
Does anyone have any experience with this phone? Does anyone know of a phone that is better or smaller? Also, does anyone know of any other cool, unique android devices?

I think u wont find any devices below 4' with decent enough hardware by today's standard. Either its big with full blown hardware or small but crappy and limited hardware. Yeah its sucks with current trend of bigger is better. Phone 4' and below is still much, much easier to handle with one hand than those humongous giants.

i would strongly recommend the Xperia Mini Pro. U wont regret it.

Sorry to bump thread but it's #1 forum link for "best small phone" on google
I have a htc wildfire s on android 2.3.6, as it only has 512mb rom so it can't do 4.x
Really smooth, lasts 2 days / charge (with cheap ebay battery).Glass touchscreen. Rarely notice which pocket it's in...
Also worth mention, my Desire C.
Can handle 4.x, yet no open wifi driver, works, but kinda "hacky" when not on stock rom. cheap touchscreen made of plastic. Aldo really small, but a bit longer. Battery can last 3 days.
Both phones can be bought used for under 100$.
Still waiting, I'd be willing to pay 400$ on a 720p 3.5" with a dual 1ghz, 1gb ram, that lasts 2 days on a charge, in the wildfire's size !

PSP2 - Android Device?

I've been thinking about this for a while but in my opinion it is becoming more likely.
Sony Ericsson has been doing pretty poorly recently but much like Motorolla out comes their Xperia X10, running Android which is doing Fantastically well and may put the company on the road to an up.
Google TV announced today and Sony is one of the initial partners and the only partner to directly integrate it into a TV.
Rumours of a "PSP Phone" have been going around for months now.
Google and Sony seem to be getting close, and I really think that this "PSP Phone" may be the PSP2 running on Android.
Anyone else see what I'm getting at?
Android plus Tegra 2 would be my guess. Don't get why they haven't done so already considering the huge popularity of mobile games in Japan. A psp phone would be an instant must-buy for me(if it had Froyo, a decent GPU and a 4 inch amoled screen).
Hopefully they will finally realise that they need a killer device to slow Apples domination. PSP2 needs to be no bigger than the size of the Go, add dual analogues, multi-touch, run on android, have more power (Tegra would be ideal), have a proper camera (i.e. optical zoom and flash), and BE A PHONE. As soon as some of their studios started producing Apps that required the power and controls offered by the PSP2 super phone then everyone would want one.
What is really surprising is how long it is taking Sony to combine their skills and bring something world beating to market. They are the only company with strong products in every area you would want from a ultimate pocket system. Phones, Gaming, Audio, PCs, Screens, Cameras, Software, even batteries, Sony are near the forefront.
I came across this thread while searching on google.
According to this Asahi news article released 5/29 they also speculate or have insider information that there are Walkman and PlayStation phones coming that will use Android. At least thats what I get out of the article.
The Wall Street Journal also reported back in March that Sony has been working on "a smart phone capable of downloading and playing videogames."
Also there have been some leaks from a UK developer who said it will use a 4-core Cell processor and that is "f*cking powerful." It will also have 2 cameras and a touch screen but will retain the traditional PlayStation buttons.
Sounds quite intriguing!

I'm against the idea of android on psp, it's just gay
it's a game system, so just let it be that way, upgrade the hardware, improve the control, throw in a sim card for internet connection, and leave it. No need for it to be a phone. Otherwise, it would fall into the life cycle of phones, which need to be updated twice a year.

I think an andriod device with a psp system is just suberb.
I think its a great idea.
But I seriously doubt any console manufacturer releasing hardware that runs open source software, seriously, think about it, the competition would be sh!thing kittens at getting their rivals source code and the pirates would think it was a gift from god.
PSP2 some hardware specs released
http://gizmodo.com/5744521/
- Dimensions: 17X7.4X2.3 cm
- 5" OLED multi-touch screen (12.7 cm)
- Multi-touch trackpad
- Resolution: 960 x 544
- Quad core ARM Cortex A-9
- PowerVR SGX 543 MP4+
- 512MB LPDDR2 RAM (1GB devkits)
- 16GB flash + SD slot
- Wifi, 3G, bluetooth
- Acelerometers, GPS, gyroscope, front and back camera.
Quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and quad-core PowerVR SGX534MP4+ GPU.
Now the Tegra 2 is a Arm Cortex A9 processor, but I didn't know there was a quad core version yet. The Tegra 3 is going to have a quad core per the data sheet and presentation from Nvidia.
It actually looks really good.
Touch screen, and Touch panel on the back mimicking the screen on the front.
I can dig that, I don't have to smudge the screen all the time. And it will feel natural for the most part since you'll be holding it with two hands anyway.
So Arm processor, Touch Screen and touch panel, 3g, wifi, bluetooth, accelerometers, GPS, gyroscope, front and back camera and internal flash storage and, a SD card slot.
This is just itching for a port of android.
It will have video out as well like the previous 2 models. It could support a keyboard and mouse, Are you seeing the picture here?
"Quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and quad-core PowerVR SGX534MP4+ GPU."
That's impressive, I would like to seem some review of the hardware/software before I would purchase it though.

That's what I'm saying.
I'm jonesing for a Tegra2 or now Tegra3 device.
I'm really curious about performance more than battery life.
I really want to have something that rocks the hell out of anything I throw at it.
Battery life doesn't really concern me, there are always 3rd party battery accessories/extenders. Either that or I'm always near a USB port or Power plug.
I refuse to have more cores on my handheld than on my PC.
Also battery life should be about the same as the PSP.

Well, one is made by Sony (NGP) and the other is made by Sony Ericsson (Xperia Play).
How easy/difficult will it be to get Android running on this beast? I don't know anything about chip architecture.

I am thinking it will run android but unfortunatel I have given up on Sony long ago.

Forget about chip architecture. Sony sued GeoHot for jailbreaking the PS3 and the one of the things you can do was run Linux on it. I am sure that the case will be the same if someone were to jailbreak the PSP2.

My first android

Hello guys. And yes, i have tried the search, but idk why didnt get any answers ,tho im pretty sure there might be similar threads.
So i am planning to get a new phone, and since my friend informed me of android i instantly became a fan.
I would like to buy a low end - mid range android phone, but not sure which one. so far optimus one looks the best, but not flawless. I looked at samsungs but they are just ... err cant find the right word.... not for me, so to speak. and them darn htc's are way over priced... theyre becoming the second apple where you pay only for the name ,i like the htc legend, but its almost the same or even worse than optimus one in some specs (tho looks way cooler) and costs almost twice as much (in my country).
so.. i am kinda lost. maybe i should wait for some gingerbread updates and see if they fix optimus ones probs and then just get it.
ty for any feedback.
What carrier are you on?

You are joking...
Legend
Capacitive display (more responsive, multitouch support)
5mp camera w/ flash
unibody construction
384mb RAM
HTC Sense
Optimus
Resistive display (less responsive, no multitouch support)
3.1mp camera, no flash
Plastic body
256mb RAM
Stock android
They both have the same armv6 cpu at 600mhz, but you'll get smoother browsing on the Legend due to htc's modified browser.
Not saying you should get either, just saying, the Legend is does not have lower specs than the Optimus.

dont mean to be rude, but you sir are mixing lg optimus gt540 with optimus one also known as p500. which has exatcly the same size and pixel display as the legend, 512 ram and 2.2 android out of the box, yes it has a 3 mpix camera without flash, but that is something i dont care about. the design is plastic, some rubbery feeling, and metal strip around. really like it, feels like my old w880

okay, i'm going to be straight up honest, in my opinion, lg has a horrible skin over android that makes the os sluggish and ugly. they however make really good harware. that's why i liked the g2x because it was stock android. honestly, if you're a first time android, i recommend the nexus line because that's how google really envisioned it to be like and you'll get the best experience with it. the nexus s is quite lovely. if you want the newest tech, then save up for the galaxy nexus. it's really expensive
LG... maybe not
Maybe totally off-topic
My father has an LG optimus one, and you know what? it's great. It's such a cool phone, but....
By the time my father bought his phone, I bought a samsung galaxy S2. I know, i know, it's more expensive that your two options, but you gotta think that the new galaxy SIII is just around the corner and so, the prices of the S2 are dropping.
I don't know if you can stretch your budget a liitle bit (maybe a lot) but I can assure you, the galaxy s2 for the first time android user is a life changer. Trust me, this is my first smartphone ever, and my last phone not even had a radio, a very loyal phone, but this is another world. Think about it, and good luck.

First off it'll last you longer.
Second you'll have a lot more support from devs and fans.
Id never buy a cheap phone, so I suggest one of the galaxy s 2s or HTC Rezound, Vivid, or wait for the galaxy s 3/one x.

The core count dilemma

I had an iPhone 3GS. After I lost it now I have a HTC Desire.
My contract is expiring in a few months time and looking for another phone that will last me another 2 years. If I am going to use the phone for another 2 years, the hardware has to be up to the task. However I have problem with the latest crop of dual cores Android phones.
- LG Optimus 2x (despise the fake iPhone UI)
- Samsung Galaxy S II (despise the fake iPhone UI)
- Motorola Atrix (not available here)
- HTC Sensation (considering the Incredible S, not sure if it is rootable)
I could probably use a third party home screen for the Korean phones, I have tried most of them out there, IMO none of them are perfect. Zeam is not buggy, but doesn't scroll very smooth. Launcher Pro is very smooth, but occasionally pause to re cache (keep in memory doesn't quite work). ADW's elastic effect (so is Launcher Pro's) sometimes doesn't show up. IMO their features are superior in quantity but not in quality compared to vanilla Android or HTC's Sense.
On my Desire the AOSP ROMs tends to not fully utilise the hardware like the camera. I hope there are good AOSP ROM for them.
The phones that actually attracted me are:
- HTC Desire Z (has keyboard)
- SE Xperia Arc / Pro (Gigantic screen and pretty / has keyboards)
- Nexus S (I can imagine using it unrooted)
However they being all single core are kind of a side step from what i have now and worry they might get a little long in the tooth.
I considered the iPhone 5, on most aspect iPhone 4 is very nice to me, but it doesn't allow me to do simple things like USB file transfer, which is important to me. I also have a few Linux PC that doesn't do iTunes.
Thoughts?
There's no dilemma; buying a single-core in 2011 is downright stupid.

other than the LTE speed, it can't touch a dual core. thats so stupid that its beyond comprehension. do you also prefer a single core pentium4 over an i7?

I wouldn't say it's stupid. Single-core devices will be pushed downmarket quickly and be more accessible. But I agree, anyone who tells me that a single-phone is a range-topping device is just trying to get a laugh

I dont think economy of scales has anything to do with single or dual cores, but rather that's the natural progression of electronics. Every handset will go down eventually toward their End-of-Life (EOL) cycle before they're replaced with newer ones.

Dude you don't have to be offensive.
Besides the gap between a dual and single core snapdragon is no where near between a processor today and one from a decade ago.
I don't play games, but I expect smooth UI. So the hardware is only part of the equation. As much as I like my Desire it is not as smooth as an iPhone 4 which is similarly spec'ed.
But if a dual core is what it takes to get that kind of smoothness on Android I'll pay for it. But once I paid for it I expect it to deliver as a package and not bogged down by some third rate software. Which is why I considered the Nexus S, which is as clean as it gets. The new Xperia line seems not bad from what I have seen even though they are single core.
Although the dual core Xperia will be a killer. But SE's history of software update may be a cause for concern.

We are in agreement but thats not what I meant to suggest lol. Having dual-core phones at the subsidized $200-300USD top end will force carriers/manufacturers to price down single-core devices to occupy lower price points regardless of how competitive they are on performance.
OP - Looking at all the hands-ons lately with the Atrix, G2x, SGS2, etc. it seems like having 2 cores amounts to a fairly dramatic difference in smoothness of the UI. I guess the question is what constitutes "smooth enough"

Best bang for the buck smartphone?

hi all , i am tight on my budget but i am looking for a decent android that is priced just right(buying one late this year ) ...i am looking for a sony phone , htc ..not samsung since their phone are a little ugly in my book ...i am eyeing on arc S ..are there better alternatives ? i dont really know much about htc ...
my priorities are
1.price - have to be decently priced ..but not high enders like s2 ..xperia s etc ..i cant afford
1.5 display- a good display is real important in my book
2. speed - decent speed should be great! single core or dual core ain't important
as long as it is snappy
3.camera - a decent camera is great ..not needing a front facing one since i am only 17
4.storage - minimal is enough since there is link2sd
i am eyeing on 2010 / early 2011 high enders like arc / arc s / htc incredible ...so what phone is in my reach ? i am buying them late this year thou ...

omg...zte fury ?? for 20$?? u kidding man! the specs are even better than my ace! and my ace cost USD 250!
I recommend lg 2x. Really cheap (i bought one 300 euros 5 months ago) , its dual core with tegra 2, 8mp camera and the screen is nice. The only problems are
1)the stock firmware is bad but you can flash cm7
2)ram is only 512mb
i cant decide between 2x or arc s ...
2x have dual core , more ram and more internal
arc has better design , better screen ,better camera and bigger screen so in a sense arc is better as a media phone?
If you know anyone in China or an exporter then get a Xiaomi Mi One. Kills both The LG 2X and Xperia Arc on processing power, battery and ram with 1.5Ghz Dual core and 1GB Ram. You also get the amazing MIUI. Camera and screen on Sony probably better but the UI, extra power and large battery on the Xiaomi make up for it. $315 retail in China but in limited supply.
The ARC Vs LG 2X is tough. The Arc has better screen and camera and probably better battery too and will get android 4.0 officially very soon. The LG though is obviously dual core, but stuck on 2.3, so custom Roms will be the way to go.
yea..hm ...
heyyy bro
zomg!!!
get the htc EVO 3D bro! only 150$ off ebay!
specs: msm 8660 (dual core 1200mhz, adreno220 gpu, 1gb ram!, 720p, 3D video filming and watching, 3d screen, hdmi mini)
yeah, the EVO3D is verry good...
i like htc, it has a good case...good cpu...
and it is verry cheap...better than lg

[Q] Xperia z3 upgrade worth it ?

hi,
I own an Xperia TX and was thinking of upgrading to the latest Xperia phone but I still haven't made up my mind.
For me the TX is a good phone but slow. Flicking through apps is not as quick as I would like and I was wondering is the Z3 much quicker ? The screen I have is 720p and is good enough for me but I do like 1080p on my laptop. Lastly the thing that gets me is the battery on the TX, I use the phone a lot for video and browsing and I barely scrap though a day, minding my use is a chore. Would the upgrade be much of a boost ?

Go for the upgrade. there's more than enough of new things in the Z3 compared to the TX. You'll love the phone.
The biggest thing for general snappiness is RAM. The difference between 1Gb and 2Gb is night and day
2Gb to 3Gb is not gonna be quite so dramatic so (from a memory perspective) I wouldn't think Z2 to Z3 would feel all that different but since the TX is only 1Gb, you'll definitely notice the difference if you upgrade.

Sounds like a computer. I do like my TX, it does everything I want it to do but I could never pick the phone up and do exactly what I wanted to do in my head - I would have to wait till it unclogs itself from whatever is in memory.
Do you think 3GB is enough ? I use a lot of YouTube, Twitter, Chrome, email app, and its never done with updates.
Hell yeah, 3Gb is a ****load of ram for a phone. My PC is only running 4Gb and it's not even very old.
My Nexus 5 is 2Gb and I never see any lag or hesitation at all. It's blazing. It is running vanilla android but even if the Xperia overlay is a memory hog (which there is no evidence to suggest it is) 3Gb will be plenty.
I just checked out my phone company and they are already offering the Xperia Z3 Compact for €459.99. The only thing is that they don't do colours and its black only. I was looking for white, damn.
I own a IPOD Touch 32GB and I take it out with me when I'm cycling. The only thing is that it is not waterproof and its never done switching itself on and off again(kinda broke?). I wonder if you could bring the Xperia Z3 Compact out on a cycle. I have an arm band for running with the Ipod Touch, not sure if I could bring Z3c out running either ? If so I could dump my IPod Touch and instead just buy a bit SDCard.
