My first android - General Topics

Hello guys. And yes, i have tried the search, but idk why didnt get any answers ,tho im pretty sure there might be similar threads.
So i am planning to get a new phone, and since my friend informed me of android i instantly became a fan.
I would like to buy a low end - mid range android phone, but not sure which one. so far optimus one looks the best, but not flawless. I looked at samsungs but they are just ... err cant find the right word.... not for me, so to speak. and them darn htc's are way over priced... theyre becoming the second apple where you pay only for the name ,i like the htc legend, but its almost the same or even worse than optimus one in some specs (tho looks way cooler) and costs almost twice as much (in my country).
so.. i am kinda lost. maybe i should wait for some gingerbread updates and see if they fix optimus ones probs and then just get it.
ty for any feedback.

What carrier are you on?

You are joking...
Legend
Capacitive display (more responsive, multitouch support)
5mp camera w/ flash
unibody construction
384mb RAM
HTC Sense
Optimus
Resistive display (less responsive, no multitouch support)
3.1mp camera, no flash
Plastic body
256mb RAM
Stock android
They both have the same armv6 cpu at 600mhz, but you'll get smoother browsing on the Legend due to htc's modified browser.
Not saying you should get either, just saying, the Legend is does not have lower specs than the Optimus.

dont mean to be rude, but you sir are mixing lg optimus gt540 with optimus one also known as p500. which has exatcly the same size and pixel display as the legend, 512 ram and 2.2 android out of the box, yes it has a 3 mpix camera without flash, but that is something i dont care about. the design is plastic, some rubbery feeling, and metal strip around. really like it, feels like my old w880
edit: the carrier has no impact in my country, we dont have T mobile, orange, and so on (as in, not the same deals as u might have)

Nice phone if you are looking for HTC

okay, i'm going to be straight up honest, in my opinion, lg has a horrible skin over android that makes the os sluggish and ugly. they however make really good harware. that's why i liked the g2x because it was stock android. honestly, if you're a first time android, i recommend the nexus line because that's how google really envisioned it to be like and you'll get the best experience with it. the nexus s is quite lovely. if you want the newest tech, then save up for the galaxy nexus. it's really expensive

LG... maybe not
Maybe totally off-topic
My father has an LG optimus one, and you know what? it's great. It's such a cool phone, but....
By the time my father bought his phone, I bought a samsung galaxy S2. I know, i know, it's more expensive that your two options, but you gotta think that the new galaxy SIII is just around the corner and so, the prices of the S2 are dropping.
I don't know if you can stretch your budget a liitle bit (maybe a lot) but I can assure you, the galaxy s2 for the first time android user is a life changer. Trust me, this is my first smartphone ever, and my last phone not even had a radio, a very loyal phone, but this is another world. Think about it, and good luck.

Why would you even think not investing money into a higher end phone.
First off it'll last you longer.
Second you'll have a lot more support from devs and fans.
Id never buy a cheap phone, so I suggest one of the galaxy s 2s or HTC Rezound, Vivid, or wait for the galaxy s 3/one x.

I would buy a dual core phone as the first, like the HTC Sensation or a Samsung Galaxy SII.

[Q] Help Please, not sure which phone to get?

Hello, I live in the UK and I got a Samsung Galaxy S for Christmas, but now I'm returning it to Amazon for a refund because I paid £250 for it and it's only a single core, so I think that a Dual Core phone would be a much more worthwhile purchase, and would last longer. (and I had the lag issue on SGS).
Now, the problem is I'm not sure which one to get. The Galaxy S II is off the list because of price (£400+), and the HTC Sensation is good but I'll probably have to wait a bit before I can afford it (£330 at the moment).
This leaves me with the LG Optimus 2X - only £250, however I'm really skeptical about this one, as people keep saying it keeps rebooting and freezing etc etc. It's a shame because my mind was set to go for the LG
So yeah, I'm really confused now. Can anybody give any advice?
How about Galaxy R ??
Same as S2 but with scLCD Display

Thats still insanely expensive...
I'm seriously considering buying an MI-ONE.
I watched some reviews and i'm impressed by quality/price of this phone (~£250).
It has an Snapdragon MSM8260 dual-core CPU 1.5 GHz with the Adreno220 and 1Gb of Ram with an MIUI based ROM and unlocked bootloader.
The only thing that stoped me so far is the lack of support in my country (must shippit to china 4 warranty).
Galaxy S+ is also a good single Core option
i suggest a Samsung Galaxy Wonder, although it's also just single core it's not that big and has a really good appearance. all phones do lag my friend and it can't be avoided, even an i3 computer lags too, so i would say it's a part of devices and you shouldn't worry about it. better choose the one with the looks
Not sure what the price is there in the UK, but I really love my Motorola Bionic. Dual core 1GHz and 1 GB RAM. 8 Meg forward camera and 1.3 Meg rear for video chat. 4.3 inch (11 cm) screen. Super fast.
if i were u i keep galaxy s , its a good phone , what u want from a mobile ?? a good camera ? if u want good camera dont buy galaxy s becasue it dont have flash however in dayligh its a good camera .
you can buy a desire hd htc

Best bang for the buck smartphone?

hi all , i am tight on my budget but i am looking for a decent android that is priced just right(buying one late this year ) ...i am looking for a sony phone , htc ..not samsung since their phone are a little ugly in my book ...i am eyeing on arc S ..are there better alternatives ? i dont really know much about htc ...
my priorities are
1.price - have to be decently priced ..but not high enders like s2 ..xperia s etc ..i cant afford
1.5 display- a good display is real important in my book
2. speed - decent speed should be great! single core or dual core ain't important
as long as it is snappy
3.camera - a decent camera is great ..not needing a front facing one since i am only 17
4.storage - minimal is enough since there is link2sd
i am eyeing on 2010 / early 2011 high enders like arc / arc s / htc incredible ...so what phone is in my reach ? i am buying them late this year thou ...
What is your budget? & Where are you?
i am a malaysian and my budget is about hmm...RM 100 ( USD333 ) but can fork out a little more ...

omg thats an amazing little phone you have there!.
I mean, darn.. i have a defy and i cannot film in 720 :S
mine cost 250 dlls with a 18 month contract :S
-.-!
omg...zte fury ?? for 20$?? u kidding man! the specs are even better than my ace! and my ace cost USD 250!
I recommend lg 2x. Really cheap (i bought one 300 euros 5 months ago) , its dual core with tegra 2, 8mp camera and the screen is nice. The only problems are
1)the stock firmware is bad but you can flash cm7
2)ram is only 512mb
i cant decide between 2x or arc s ...
2x have dual core , more ram and more internal
arc has better design , better screen ,better camera and bigger screen so in a sense arc is better as a media phone?
If you know anyone in China or an exporter then get a Xiaomi Mi One. Kills both The LG 2X and Xperia Arc on processing power, battery and ram with 1.5Ghz Dual core and 1GB Ram. You also get the amazing MIUI. Camera and screen on Sony probably better but the UI, extra power and large battery on the Xiaomi make up for it. $315 retail in China but in limited supply.
The ARC Vs LG 2X is tough. The Arc has better screen and camera and probably better battery too and will get android 4.0 officially very soon. The LG though is obviously dual core, but stuck on 2.3, so custom Roms will be the way to go.
yea..hm ...
heyyy bro
zomg!!!
get the htc EVO 3D bro! only 150$ off ebay!
specs: msm 8660 (dual core 1200mhz, adreno220 gpu, 1gb ram!, 720p, 3D video filming and watching, 3d screen, hdmi mini)
yeah, the EVO3D is verry good...
i like htc, it has a good case...good cpu...
and it is verry cheap...better than lg

Actually that is exactly true. The SGS2 has numerious advantages over the DS. First is the S3 snapdragon processor or samsung exynos processor. Both processors are at 1.5ghz. Also both processors have better GPU. Next is RAM amount. The SGS2 has 1024MB of RAM. The DS only has 768mb. Next is screen quality. The SGS2 has a brilliant 4.5in Super AMOLED Plus screen. Colors are deeper and richer. The DS has a 3.7in Basic LCD screen. Colors look washed out. Next is battery life. The SGS2 has a 1,800 MAH Battery. While the DS has the 1,450 MAH. Average talk time is 7.5hrs on the SGS2 while the DS is around 4 hrs of talk time. Next is dev support. The SGS2 has huge dev support. The DS barely has 0.01% support that the SGS2 has. Next is the SGS2 has much better support from the manufacturer. The SGS2 has had 2.3.4, 2.3.5, 2.3.6, 4.0.2, and 4.0.3 all official os updates or leaked direct from samsung. The DS has seen 2.3.4 and 3 patches direct from htc. The DS is the red head step child for htc. The one and ONLY advantage the DS has over the SGS2 is the keyboard. Every other aspect it falls really short. And yes they are both "Dual core" but thats where the simulatiles end. There is also huge differences in quad scores (+2000 difference). Oh and the SGS2 has a 2.3MP front facing camera while the DS is a basic VGA. And the SGS2 also has a much better camera (They are both 8Mp) but samsungs is so much crisper and better color quality. Not to mention true zero shutter lag. So at the end of the day the OP Made a wise choice.

I'm inclined to agree. Especially with the dev support, if you can move from a doubleshot to the gs2 without spending too much, its a no brainer. That's also assuming, of course, that you won't miss the keyboard, which is a purely personal choice.
Yes. But the DoubleShot is a beaaaaast!

Lmfao. Not compared to the SGS2. Its a snail compared to it. The SGS2 is the beast. Bone stock 6500+ antutu scores vs 3000+ the DShot has. The max score ive seen a DS get is 7200 on Antutu thats maxed out OC to 1.782ghz. The SGS2 gets 6000-6500 at 1.2ghz and 8500-9500 OCed to 1.6ghz.

Exactly. I agree. Couldnt of said it any better.
Don't the SGS2 and the DS have the same exact chipset? Just the DSes is manufactured underclocked. Also benchmarks aren't everything. I'm pretty sure the DS can run anything the SGS2 can with ease.

It's an apples to oranges comparison.
The OP was letting us know he was leaving, and almost led to selling his device to me, but ended up getting it to another - that creates purpose for his posting.
The rest of this thread seems to have turned into someone trying to make themselves feel better by trying to put someone else down - don't feed the troll.

The Doubleshot uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 Processor. The AT&T and Tmobile versions have the Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 Processor and Sprints version uses Samsungs Exynos Processor. The S3 processor can process tasks much faster then the S2 processor thus higher benchmark scores. Not to mention better GPU. The exynos has even better processing power and even better GPU then both S2 and S3 processors. Qualcomm just released the Snapdragon S4 processor found in the american varient of the HTC One X. It has slightly better processing and GPU then the Exynos Processor but not much. Samsungs Hummingbird and Exynos processors have always been better then there competitors. Trust me the DS is not slow by any means but the S3. S4. And Exynos processors are just better.

The Doubleshot uses an S3 processor. I'm inclined to agree that the GS2 is generally a better phone for most people. I like the Doubleshot better because the keyboard is extremely useful to me and it fits better in my pockets. Also, being able to go directly to the camera through the button has been a lifesaver at times.
I don't understand. These people like the keyboard, and its the worst keyboard on any phone that I have used... The keyboard is so bad it was easier most times to use the onscreen keyboard.
Unfortunately tmobiles best phone for now is the s2. Its sad because there are some better phones out but tmobile is always behind the times.

It's true that it isn't the best keyboard... My java based Rumor Touch had a better physical keyboard when I had it, but the DS is probably one of the most powerful android phones that have a physical keyboard and after using it for a couple months I can type on the keyboard fairly fast and it does seem to give better tactile feedback then when I first got it, it's like it just needed to get broken in. But to each there own. I was used to using an onscreen keyboard since my last 2 phones were just candybar style androids, but it's nice to have a physical keyboard.
The right feel...
IMO, it is all about how the phone feels/performs in your hand and how it meets your demands. The SG S2,for me, feels too fragile/plasticy whereas the DS feels sexy, soft and yet dorable and can go the distance. Phones are like girl friends, you don't have to have the most popular girl, just the one that feels right for you.

LG Optimus 2X vs Nexus S Dilemma

Hello fellas,
I have such a big dilemma in DETAILS between the LG Optimus 2x , Google Nexus S
Details:
Value: Nexus S : ~$330 avg.
O2X: ~$260 avg surprisingly
Performance: LG optimus 2x is the winner {Tegra 2 dual core cpu} even though Nvidia didn't release the damn source, => HW ACC on Cyanogenmod is fairly working (reverse engineering)
Physical specs: LG Optimus 2x also surprisingly better than the Nexus S in terms of durability and thickness, both Nexus S and the Galaxy S (i9000) gives the feeling of cheap material.
Display: LG Optimus 2x is the best. Gorilla Glass, S-LCD (used in iPhones retina), minus the Contour display that nexus S offers which bit sucks, especially fruit ninja lol (Also, there is Nexus S AMOLED, but +$60 bux away, Amoled=least life)
Cool tweak: An app that can control the navigation LEDs, e.g: Facebook notifcation is the home button, so it flashes as of the lack of Notification LED (Both phones lack)
Battery perf: Nexus S , somehow because of the single core CPU, but it should be Vice versa, Dual core uses less power at processing things less than 50% of load than a single core.
Style: Nexus S wins (opinion) not important anyways...
NFC: Nexus S, no need for it. not in my country
Thats against:
HDMI & External sotrage: Optimus 2x is the winner. (As both i might be using in the future, maybe not!)
Storage: LOL, 8GB NS = $300, 16GB O2X: $250 (did i hear dual core? YESS!!, WTF GOOGLE??)
Now the biggest part:
The hot damn software:
Nexus S is the 2nd phone to have the latest updates from Google. Well, Jelly-O Bean.
The LG Optimus still didn't recieve the damn ICS which was the major cons. However, its guaranteed to be release in Q3 of 2012.
My problem on the software side is, all I need is stability, mods (i know that these can be hardly combined)
O2x: GB 2.3.4
Nexus S: JB 4.1.0
IS software a major issue for regretting a $250 dual-core phone?
Sound Quality: Which is my 2nd major upgrade after performance, I should represent this as TIE, since both includes Wolfson DAC, Voodoo mod. But lack of Voodoo features in the O2X ( nvm, i only need AMP, hate external ones, sport-ish)
Others, connectivity, bluetooth etc, aren't major in difference.
As buying consideration,
Any opinion/suggestions/help are appreciated,
Thank you!

ok what your saying about the screen is bollocks amoled is 1000 times better than that other s***
amoled has the best screen life ever i have a nexus one and its still going strong and still beats the s*** out of the washed out colors of the icrap 4/4s make the smart choice and go for the nexus s even though its single core its a better phone lg make stuff that fall apart after a few months of usage get the nexus s.period
the nexus s will get JB in the next few months that lg crap wont
Lg made a damn good phone, best bang for buck, screen excellent too. Sadly updates wise is very poor

I <3 the O2X and dont actually care about the updates... custom roms for me... (the ICS roms are nearly there) PLUS THE HARDWARE ROCKS ( and design, I like that glass on the front and metal strip on back, NS looks a little weird and silly button arragements)
I'll suggest you the Nexus S, although I'm pretty confident you can get a better phone than both for the same money. But from these two, the Nexus S is a winner. Sure, the Optimus packs a dual-core CPU, but the Tegra 2 is technically the least powerful dual-core available. Not to mention software updates. LG are terrible at updating their phones.
The GPS on the Nexus S is pretty crappy though..... If that matters to you.

And still no goddamn Nvidia source code, OR THE F LG ICS...
No sources is a big problem for me. Screw the ICS update, we want the sources!
A question to be answered :
If i buy the Nexus S, would it support me in the future, like doesnt look so much outdated, I dont need gaming...
Is it worth till this date?
Go on optimus 2x

If your going by outdatedness, the NS is. Single Core processor, whereas the LG has better specs. Faster processsor and looks nicer.
There is support from LG giving the ICS update this month hopefully

If you're a music junkie, the NS has full voodoo sound support while o2x only has hardware amp, and supercurio seems to have given up on it.
hey guyz, sorry for bumping this old thread..
I have chosen the Atrix 4G...
Sound quality + Performance meets at its best...
Just the lack of ICS upgrade, not a big issue to me, "'Leaks'" are nice
Voodoo support for it seems possible (more possibility than the O2X before...), i'm working on a port...

220 bux. I bet the nexus ain't better in terms of sound quality. Only hit stream phones does have HQ. DACs

One S successor announced.

The successor to the One S has (probably) been announced.
It is called the Desire 600. It has:
Code:
• A 4.5in 540x960 SLCD2 display
• A 1.2Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 200 processor
• An Adreno 203 GPU
• 1GB RAM
• 8GB storage (wut?)
• A microSD slot (ah)
• An 8MP camera with f/2.0 lens
• A 1.6MP front camera
• NFC
• Dual-SIM capability
• And [B]NO[/B] LTE compatibility.
It comes in two colour combinations, silver with a black screen and red trim, or completely black. The silver one looks disgusting.
Link to picture - original image is waaaaaaaaay too big to fit on this page.
It comes shipped with 4.1.2 and Sense 5. BoomSound is included, no word on Zoe yet (so probably not included).
It's on pre-order in Russia at the moment for 15,990 ruble (GB £340, US $509).
HTC say:
The new HTC Desire 600 dual sim will be available with mobile operators and major retailers in a number of markets from early June 2013. For more information visit www.htc.com

i dont think that this phone can be Successor of One S. if a 720p display was included then it was a Successor. i think is successor of desire x..
My thinking was that:
Code:
• One X/XL/X+ has 4.7in display, and so does the One (M7)
• Desire 600 has 4.5in display
• One S has 4.3in display
• Desire X has 4.0in display
So it would be logical to say that this phone is an upgrade to ours. The only problem with out screen wasn't the resolution, it was the crappy PenTile RGBG layout that HTC chose for it. By making it SLCD2, that should improve quality (but makes colours far less vivid). Also, it has NFC, which our phone doesn't have. It has a microSD card slot, which our phone doesn't have. And it has 2 more cores, which our phone doesn't have.
HTC have only confirmed it for Asia and Africa, no European countries (apart from Ukraine) and no American countries, which could suggest that they will cater to our higher standards and bring out a phone with HD screen with AMOLED (hopefully), Zoe and that UltraPixel camera.
Yayyy we can port Sense 5 from this device and although the hardware will be difficult, no resizing needed
The "true" successor" to the one S will be the one mini/M4 (2GB RAM, highly clocked krait, ultrapixel camera, the zero gap metal body construction, boomsound, 720P res. [will most likely be SLCD 2] etc.), this is a successor to the desire X, it is considered part of the budget/mid range series of htc phones.
qHD res. (SLCD 2) with that screen size won't be that great anyway, only be marginally better than our one S, main difference being text
Also, just because it has "more cores", doesn't mean it will be better, afaik, that chipset is based on 45nm, our dual core krait is based on 28nm and looking at the rest of the specs, it doesn't look like it will be as good of a performer when it comes to performance (especially in the GPU department), power efficiency and it will most likely produce more heat.
A really good dual core chipset with 2GB RAM is much better than a budget quad core chipset with 1GB RAM.
The only part of this phone that can be consider a true upgrade (so far) are the speakers, NFC, SD slot (but 8GB of internal storage is very low, only 6GB or so will be usable and these days games etc. are getting big and you can't move stuff to the SD card any more)
That phone more likely is a successor to the Desire series on it's own.
Either way, the big hitter for me now is NFC. If that isn't included by HTC, I am moving elsewhere. Loyalty can only get you so far if they don't listen to the loyal end user. Like a bloody 16 million colour notification LED, there's 518,400 of them on our screen, would it really hurt to add in just one more? And leaving NFC out of this phone was just plain stupid anyway.

These specs are of a low-end device, It's not a 'successor' to the One S in any means, dual SIM suggests it's targeted at developing countries, which is silly considering HTC has been moving away from them.
Edit:
If you want to 'upgrade' to this phone it's fine but it's specs are way worse than what is packaged into our One S, don't get illuded, Snapdragon 200 is Cortex-A5, it's really power efficient but it's the worst you can get of this generation.
I like that, the grey-red combination IMHO is really cool...
Dual-SIM is a really useful feature in the "first world" though, I'd love a flagship phone with that.
HTC are thinking in the long-term by targeting developing countries. When they flourish, the more loyal customers, the better. It's just a question as to if HTC will survive that long.

In my opinion they will not survive if they work same way as now
Their dual SIM have problems
From HTC One S
I think that the successor of our phone will be the HTC one mini... The desire will be the successor to the "desire" series, while the new one mini will be targeted for the one series users who just don't want a 4,5'+ screen.
My opinion

This is not a successor to the One series. Its for the Desire series. So in a way its a successor to the Desire X and SV.
In the one series is the One Mini.
What an interesting device. I'll keep my one s thank you htc

I'll probably convert to the childish side, sadly. My Mum got an S III a few days ago and as much as it pains me to say it, it is quite good. It's just the UI that looks awful, while Sense tries to look somewhat professional, TouchWiz looks like Samsung's target audience is everyone below the age of thirteen. All the features added are really good though, and Samsung give a long long support length. The S II is getting 4.2.2 and our phone might not. The S IV will probably make it to 6.0.

Yes sammy supports long
Reason sense is deeply mix in os & complete
touch viz is just android theme I suppose touch wiz as stock android + change some icons some layout change
think of sammy's gallery, dialer, calendar, clock ......
so when a new android comes they have to change some icons & roll out new OTA update
From HTC One S
Honestly I doubt that will be the successor, as it's not better on all aspects (it looks like).. Guess we'll find out soon enough..

HTC won't upgrade every aspect of it. They always leave one feature out that turns it from a brilliant phone to an "imagine what it could have been" phone.
COOL
