PSP2 - Android Device? - General Questions and Answers

I've been thinking about this for a while but in my opinion it is becoming more likely.
Sony Ericsson has been doing pretty poorly recently but much like Motorolla out comes their Xperia X10, running Android which is doing Fantastically well and may put the company on the road to an up.
Google TV announced today and Sony is one of the initial partners and the only partner to directly integrate it into a TV.
Rumours of a "PSP Phone" have been going around for months now.
Google and Sony seem to be getting close, and I really think that this "PSP Phone" may be the PSP2 running on Android.
Anyone else see what I'm getting at?

Android plus Tegra 2 would be my guess. Don't get why they haven't done so already considering the huge popularity of mobile games in Japan. A psp phone would be an instant must-buy for me(if it had Froyo, a decent GPU and a 4 inch amoled screen).

Hopefully they will finally realise that they need a killer device to slow Apples domination. PSP2 needs to be no bigger than the size of the Go, add dual analogues, multi-touch, run on android, have more power (Tegra would be ideal), have a proper camera (i.e. optical zoom and flash), and BE A PHONE. As soon as some of their studios started producing Apps that required the power and controls offered by the PSP2 super phone then everyone would want one.
What is really surprising is how long it is taking Sony to combine their skills and bring something world beating to market. They are the only company with strong products in every area you would want from a ultimate pocket system. Phones, Gaming, Audio, PCs, Screens, Cameras, Software, even batteries, Sony are near the forefront.

I came across this thread while searching on google.
According to this Asahi news article released 5/29 they also speculate or have insider information that there are Walkman and PlayStation phones coming that will use Android. At least thats what I get out of the article.
The Wall Street Journal also reported back in March that Sony has been working on "a smart phone capable of downloading and playing videogames."
Also there have been some leaks from a UK developer who said it will use a 4-core Cell processor and that is "f*cking powerful." It will also have 2 cameras and a touch screen but will retain the traditional PlayStation buttons.
Sounds quite intriguing!

I'm against the idea of android on psp, it's just gay
it's a game system, so just let it be that way, upgrade the hardware, improve the control, throw in a sim card for internet connection, and leave it. No need for it to be a phone. Otherwise, it would fall into the life cycle of phones, which need to be updated twice a year.

I think an andriod device with a psp system is just suberb.

I think its a great idea.
But I seriously doubt any console manufacturer releasing hardware that runs open source software, seriously, think about it, the competition would be sh!thing kittens at getting their rivals source code and the pirates would think it was a gift from god.

PSP2 some hardware specs released
http://gizmodo.com/5744521/
- Dimensions: 17X7.4X2.3 cm
- 5" OLED multi-touch screen (12.7 cm)
- Multi-touch trackpad
- Resolution: 960 x 544
- Quad core ARM Cortex A-9
- PowerVR SGX 543 MP4+
- 512MB LPDDR2 RAM (1GB devkits)
- 16GB flash + SD slot
- Wifi, 3G, bluetooth
- Acelerometers, GPS, gyroscope, front and back camera.
Quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and quad-core PowerVR SGX534MP4+ GPU.
Now the Tegra 2 is a Arm Cortex A9 processor, but I didn't know there was a quad core version yet. The Tegra 3 is going to have a quad core per the data sheet and presentation from Nvidia.
It actually looks really good.
Touch screen, and Touch panel on the back mimicking the screen on the front.
I can dig that, I don't have to smudge the screen all the time. And it will feel natural for the most part since you'll be holding it with two hands anyway.
So Arm processor, Touch Screen and touch panel, 3g, wifi, bluetooth, accelerometers, GPS, gyroscope, front and back camera and internal flash storage and, a SD card slot.
This is just itching for a port of android.
It will have video out as well like the previous 2 models. It could support a keyboard and mouse, Are you seeing the picture here?

"Quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and quad-core PowerVR SGX534MP4+ GPU."
That's impressive, I would like to seem some review of the hardware/software before I would purchase it though.

That's what I'm saying.
I'm jonesing for a Tegra2 or now Tegra3 device.
I'm really curious about performance more than battery life.
I really want to have something that rocks the hell out of anything I throw at it.
Battery life doesn't really concern me, there are always 3rd party battery accessories/extenders. Either that or I'm always near a USB port or Power plug.

I refuse to have more cores on my handheld than on my PC.
Also battery life should be about the same as the PSP.

Well, one is made by Sony (NGP) and the other is made by Sony Ericsson (Xperia Play).

How easy/difficult will it be to get Android running on this beast? I don't know anything about chip architecture.

Quad-core ?? it seem sound gd ,, but on psp...?

I am thinking it will run android but unfortunatel I have given up on Sony long ago.

Probably as hard as it can get. I seriously doubt any of the drivers will be easily available.

Forget about chip architecture. Sony sued GeoHot for jailbreaking the PS3 and the one of the things you can do was run Linux on it. I am sure that the case will be the same if someone were to jailbreak the PSP2.

The core count dilemma

I had an iPhone 3GS. After I lost it now I have a HTC Desire.
My contract is expiring in a few months time and looking for another phone that will last me another 2 years. If I am going to use the phone for another 2 years, the hardware has to be up to the task. However I have problem with the latest crop of dual cores Android phones.
- LG Optimus 2x (despise the fake iPhone UI)
- Samsung Galaxy S II (despise the fake iPhone UI)
- Motorola Atrix (not available here)
- HTC Sensation (considering the Incredible S, not sure if it is rootable)
I could probably use a third party home screen for the Korean phones, I have tried most of them out there, IMO none of them are perfect. Zeam is not buggy, but doesn't scroll very smooth. Launcher Pro is very smooth, but occasionally pause to re cache (keep in memory doesn't quite work). ADW's elastic effect (so is Launcher Pro's) sometimes doesn't show up. IMO their features are superior in quantity but not in quality compared to vanilla Android or HTC's Sense.
On my Desire the AOSP ROMs tends to not fully utilise the hardware like the camera. I hope there are good AOSP ROM for them.
The phones that actually attracted me are:
- HTC Desire Z (has keyboard)
- SE Xperia Arc / Pro (Gigantic screen and pretty / has keyboards)
- Nexus S (I can imagine using it unrooted)
However they being all single core are kind of a side step from what i have now and worry they might get a little long in the tooth.
I considered the iPhone 5, on most aspect iPhone 4 is very nice to me, but it doesn't allow me to do simple things like USB file transfer, which is important to me. I also have a few Linux PC that doesn't do iTunes.
Thoughts?
There's no dilemma; buying a single-core in 2011 is downright stupid.

other than the LTE speed, it can't touch a dual core. thats so stupid that its beyond comprehension. do you also prefer a single core pentium4 over an i7?

I wouldn't say it's stupid. Single-core devices will be pushed downmarket quickly and be more accessible. But I agree, anyone who tells me that a single-phone is a range-topping device is just trying to get a laugh

I dont think economy of scales has anything to do with single or dual cores, but rather that's the natural progression of electronics. Every handset will go down eventually toward their End-of-Life (EOL) cycle before they're replaced with newer ones.

Dude you don't have to be offensive.
Besides the gap between a dual and single core snapdragon is no where near between a processor today and one from a decade ago.
I don't play games, but I expect smooth UI. So the hardware is only part of the equation. As much as I like my Desire it is not as smooth as an iPhone 4 which is similarly spec'ed.
But if a dual core is what it takes to get that kind of smoothness on Android I'll pay for it. But once I paid for it I expect it to deliver as a package and not bogged down by some third rate software. Which is why I considered the Nexus S, which is as clean as it gets. The new Xperia line seems not bad from what I have seen even though they are single core.
Although the dual core Xperia will be a killer. But SE's history of software update may be a cause for concern.

We are in agreement but thats not what I meant to suggest lol. Having dual-core phones at the subsidized $200-300USD top end will force carriers/manufacturers to price down single-core devices to occupy lower price points regardless of how competitive they are on performance.
OP - Looking at all the hands-ons lately with the Atrix, G2x, SGS2, etc. it seems like having 2 cores amounts to a fairly dramatic difference in smoothness of the UI. I guess the question is what constitutes "smooth enough"

[Q] Is a dual-core Windows Phone coming this year?

I thought one of the main disadvantages of WP7 has been inferior hardware.
For the original release Microsoft only supported the old snapdragon CPU with 1Ghz and Adreno 200.
Now for Mango, they did obviously update their support
for 8X55 and 7X30.
None of those are actually dualcore SoC's.
How are they going to keep up with Android if they continue offering inferior hardware specs? Or did I miss something?
I wish they do relase one which does. but they dont need dual core for the os so why burden the battery
"inferior hardware"
wow really?
dude, 1ghz, on a phone, thats everything else but inferior
it may be the truth that andoid is goin to need dual cores to give users a good looking and fluid experience, but windows phone is not.
no matter what handset you get, its working faaaast. no lags, no hickups, almost no loading times (and with mango its getting better)
so why would windows phone need it ?
However I would really like to have dual core phone, jut like to think that I have one of the fastest phones. But its true windows os is so smooth it wont make a perfermonce differnece, only thing that can help is using NAND memory instead of SD. Howver I want a better GPU so we can play faster games with good FPS and better quality, not saying that the quality is poor atm its great but it can always improve.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but the problem is it's not about "why would WP need it".
The average consumer, who is used to buying PCs based on their specs, will look at an Android phone and a WP and compare them. If they don't know the difference between the two OS then they'll be looking at the specs.
What do you think they're going to choose..?

to be frank, the average customer knows a superficial knowledge of cell phones...and many still market dumb phones as the approach for all user needs. Nokia has addressed the h/w issues ad nauseum, so it wouldn't surprise me if Nokia would be the first wp7 with a dual core. In fact, I would love to grab a Nokia phone...
i thought of your point too
its true the specs are taken in consideration
but currently im not aware of any device that stand out..
i think the average people would think
2x cores = 2x power needed = half the battery
battery is a major aspect
so still, why build a dual core if nothing is using it, besides the battery
like i said, android may be able to to make their os fast & fluid
but why cant they do it on the current specs
you simply dont need heavy processin unit on your mobile device, as long as you wont do heavy processin on the device. the phone wont need it, but the tablet does.
the average user is used to windows
the average user uses the phone for not much more then phone, text, surf, game.
last but not least, the price, i dont know much about dual core phones (do they already exists?) but double the cores, may raise the price by a lot.
this year we wont need no dual cores....
To be honest, I never really felt the need of such a powerful processor in a phone. What can you use it for apart from games with high graphics?
I'm sure opening office docs, web pages, utility apps, music...everything at once still won't slow down the processes. It's a phone guys. Not a desktop PC.
Many years ago, I had a 1.2 GHz CPU running windows XP, which in fact ran heavy programs without any lag. And today, our phones have 1GHz CPU running a phone OS and apps that hardly go above 50mb.
What's the need, seriously?
I don't care about dual core yet, but would like to see some higher end devices. All first gen releases were very generic.
Newer Gen CPU/GPU (dual core not necessary till things are coded for it)
High Quality Material/build
32GB or 64GB Internal ROM
Super AMOLED/next gen if avail
512MB RAM
Good Battery
Good Quality Optics (iPhone4 or better (like Nokia N8))
Thats all I want. Maybe a FFC just for ****s n' giggles, but thats not high on my priority list.

Well just like you said they have added support for new processors but neither of the new ones are dual core. We've heard rumors that ST-Ericsson will be supplying dual core chips for Nokia's Windows Phones but for now Qualcomm says they're the only WP7 manufacturer.
I don't doubt Windows Phone will see dual core support in the future. I have a feeling that Nokia won't be launching their Windows Phone alongside the others in September/October, but later in November or even December. That's when I think we'll see the first dual core Windows Phone. (Just speculation. No evidence for this.)

Well you just described Nokia N9 except for the screen ... only Sammy can put Super-AMOLED and the RAM is 768MB
PS. I though someone from Microsoft or Nokia I can't recall said that WP7 is already dual-core ready, so maybe it doesn't need new coding or I'm terribly wrong

Aye Why I know the phone I want is easily within reach. That would be more than powerful enough for the next couple years. This is also why I was excited about the Nokia deal because they have some excellent quality hardware & optics in some of their phones.
Android needs dual-core because the OS is so cluttered and filled with junk. WP7 phone have "inferior hardware" yet still run smoother than any Android phone would.
yea it should b strong

dual core phones worth it ??

hey guys,
i just wanted to ask if its worth buying a dual core phone right now .. since no apps that are out now, really make use of the dual core processor.
i was thinking of buying either the SAMSUNG GALAXY R or the SONY ERICSSON XPERIA NEO V ..
so i was wondering if i really need the galaxy R (1GHZ dual core and 1GB of RAM).. or should i just stick to neo V(1GHZ single core and 512MB ram) as i'd be saving about a 60$.. other than that both phones are very similar .. i.e both are getting ICS .. both a 5MP camera.. etc..
please give me your suggestions as i just cant make up my mind !!
GALAXY R or NEO V ??
I think it really depends. I think Android ICS for example could handle the dual core chips a bit better than Gingerbread, but OEMS do try to customize the OS so it can handle resources as needed. All it does really is to speed up multitasking and other resource intensive apps. My biggest concern is how much more bloatware the OEMs and wireless carriers put onto the device, thus making it buggy and slower than it should. So in the end it wouldn't matter if u had a dual core or single core, 512 or 1GB RAM, it would depend how buggy you want the phone to be. It may not be buggy out of the box, but once u begin using it in the real world (downloading apps, making calls while surfing the web, playing games, etc) it could begin to run a bit slower.
Personally, I don't really think a dual core chip is needed if the OS is streamlined enough where it can handle and allocate resources when it needs them. With the combination of dual core chips, 4G HSPA+ and LTE, i would argue that you would be sacrificing some battery life.
If you are going with Android, i would say to spring for the dual core chipset since it seems thats where software is headed. As a WP7 user, it doesn't bother me using a single core chip. The OS runs very fluid and it can intelligently manage its resources. I trust ICS will manage resources as needed too.
As far as RAM, it is always good to have more RAM in the device. If you go with the phone with beefier specs then u know that it will last you longer as far as support for the device, updates, etc.
Hope u r not bothered by me being a WP7 user and giving u advice for Android. I do have an Android tablet that i do use from time to time. It has a sinlge core chipset and it does run fairly smooth, for an Android device that is. My friend has a MyTouch 4G and it runs fairly smooth, but at times i notice it lags.
I would say to play around with them in the store and compare the two side by side.
I would hold off until after the MWC where everyone will be showing the new quad core phones that will become the standard.
@TKETZ196
thanks a lot that kinda did clear a few things..
so i'm starting to lean towards the dual core phone.. guess there's no arguing its more future proof..

Its not really future proof with quadcore phones coming out. Once they do we will all be in the same boat we are in now. Apps and OS updates will be tailored for the quadcore instead of the dual core.
ok but they do stand a better chance compared to the single core ones right ! i'm looking at a phone that should last me another year and a half atleast.
given the choices that i have in the mid range budget i want to know if the GALAXY R is a good candidate to place my money on.. given that its one of the very few nice dual core phone in the price bracket other than optimus 2x.

Will they last. Oh of course. Just like the single core does now. It still works and you can still get apps for it. Will it be upgradable to newer OSs maybe maybe not. Can't know for sure. Only Google knows that for sure. If upgrades are what you are worried about then get a nexus as it will get them for sure. Anything else is up to the carriers or running a custom rom. I am waiting for a quadxore myself this way I know I would t have to worry about to many hardware restrictions. But all in all do some research before making a choice. Mainly keep an eye on MWC. Remember phones are already outdated by the time we get them and the next Gen are already being worked on.
Dual-Core is imo just Marketing. Nobody needs the power in normal use of the phone. If you play games this will be different, but at least playing games on 4" Devices isn't the funniest thing.
Tablets with Dual-Core and Quad-Core SoC's are the future, and to be state of the Art Dual-Core Smartphone SoC's will be Standard 2012.

i agree, but going multi-core is the future. it all depends on what apps you intend to run on your device. i just hope that battery technology can cope up with the rapid pace of mobile with multi-processors.
your unit may be uber quad-core fast, but would that last you for a day?
It's just a question of use.
If you only use your phone to text, phone, and a little web surfing, just stay on a single core.
If you want to have an advanced use of it, playing games, web surfing fluently with flash plugins, an interface with smooth scrollings...And with evolving capacities, like said before, on new versions of ROMS with plenty of possibilities, just go for it. May be you will keep your device longer, and it will worth your extra 60 bucks.
You just have to find the good ratio use/long lasting/short lasting/speed.
A non dual core phone is like buying a non dual core computer only do it if it's your only option.

dual core advantages
Dual core definitely has its advantages especially running ICS where there is a demand for more power
GPU,s respond better with dual core tech..will be quite a while before quad core takes hold so dual is the way to go for at least a year..more like six months though I would expect.

[Q] Most badass GPU and CPU in da world; Expert Knowedge please :)

I've been doing quite a bit of research on GPU's and CPU's in phone's/tablets lately. And I have a few unanswered questions that I can't seem to find an answer for.
1: What's the best chipset available for mobile phones and tablets right now? This link cleared quite a bit up for me, it does a fairly indepth comparison for both GPU and CPU performance between the Qualcomm S4, Tegra 3, OMAP 4470, and the Exynos 4212. And I dont want the 'Well this is better because it has more jiggahertz". Shut up, that's not what I need. I need something more indepth. If studies on individual GPU comparison can be provided, please drop a link. I'd like to know these things very well.
2: What individual GPU is currently the best? I realize the Ipad3 came out with with a graphics chip that's supposedly superior to the Xbox/PS3's. However I take anything Apple says with a grain of salt, they're notorious for shooting flaming BS out of their rear. However based on the little bit of searching I've done, the Adreno GPU's seem to be ahead of their time. I previously thought the Mali 400 GPU in the Exynos chipset was one of the best, but apparently it's outdated. Again, links to tests/studies/comparisons would be appreciated.
3: What's the deal with the ARM chips? Are the A5's, A6's, A11's, (and whatever other A chips out there are), some standard CPU developed by ARM and licensed out to all manufacturers to use in their chipsets?
4: What alternatives are there to the ARM CPU's? Most chipsets I research seem to be using a Cortex A9 chip.
5: What's the difference between the A5, A6, A9, etc. From what I've seen the higher numbers are the newer models, but I feel like that's a very shallow definition. If that is true, why does the newest iPad only use an A5x chip for it's quad core rather than an A9 or something of the sort.
6: Is the chipset in the iPad really the fastest out there? Personally, I can't really stand apple products; let alone the rabid fanboys and the obnoxious advertisements they put out. I can recognize that they very often gloat about their products and overexaggerate; like how they said the dual core in the iPhone 4s is the fastest out there, yet from what I've read the A5 is the worst performing dual core out there. Is the GPU in the tablet really superior to the Xbox? And is the processor really able to outdo the Tegra 3?
If you're able to answer any one of these, even exclusively, that would be appreciated. I just like knowledge

1. Dunno right now, it's always changing. I hear the new Qualcomm processors with the new Andreno gpu are supposed to be the ****, but it's not out yet so who knows. The iPad 3 currently has not had any real world tests done yet, we need to wait for release. It is basically the same A5 chip as the iPad 2 but with the PSVita's gpu thrown in.
2. *sigh* The iPad 3 is not more powerful than an Xbox 360. It is better in I believe one aspect (more memory), but this has very little impact on performance/graphics quality. This is Apple shooting wads of **** out it's arse, or whoever made the claim. It's actually using the same GPU found in the PSVita, which we all know is not as powerful as a PS3/Xbox360. However, the PSVita is also using a quad core cpu, whereas the iPad 3 is using the same dual core A5 as the iPad 2, so technically the PSVita is superior. You also have to consider how many more pixels the gpu has to power on the iPad 3's display. While high res is nice, it takes more power to render it.
3. ARM creates a base chip for companies to slap their own GPU's and name on. The naming structure is pretty self explanatory.
4. All CPU's currently in tablets/cellphones are a variant of the ARM. A Cortex A9 is still an ARM chip. This will soon change when Intel releases their tablet/phone chips.
5. You're right, higher numbers do mean newer modeling. I don't know all the exacts, but with the newer ARM series you get higher and/or more efficient clocks, generally some battery savings, and in some series support for more cores. Apple's labeling of their chips has nothing to do with ARM's, it's their own naming scheme. The A5x is just what Apple calls their version of the ARM processor.
6. I believe atm the iPad 3 has the fastest chipset in a tablet..for now. It won't take long for it to be overtaken by other companies, there's so much in the works right now.

Thanks for the reply. It seems weird to me that Apple would rename a CPU to something as similar to one that would already exist, A5x as to A5.

Because Apple is the type of company to step on someones feet like that, and then sue them later on for copyright infringement. Damn the confusion, Apple starts with A, so will their processors.

yeah, apple just simply buy a technology and re-label them, make patent and troll others. so for comparison, apple doesn't count. Also these handheld chipset can't be compared with consoles, consoles have more proccessing power like more RAM bandwidth and polygons.
Anyway.. based on my experience, mali400 exynos has a butterly smooth performance for both UI and 3D graphics. I've tried both Gingerbread GNote and my SGS2.
on the other hand, Google did a great job with TI OMAP for it's Galaxy Nexus, pure HW accelerated 4.0.3.. with very little glitch, but I believe it's software issue.
IMO if you wanna buy a fast and smooth device, follow the current Nexus spec (at least similar) like GNexus, Motorola RAZR, etc. I've seen Tegra 3 4+1 Transformer Prime but never hands-on it. as far as i seen, UI and 3D performance are stunning. 1 extra core advantage is for low power mode when doing light proccessing and standby mode. Today hardwares are fast enough, drivers and OS optimisation are very important thing if you want everything run smoothly.

I kmow what you mean. Im extremely happy with my galaxy s2, I cant say I ever recall it lagging on me in any way whatsoever. Im not sure what makes the droid razr and galaxy nexus comparable to the s2. From what Ive read Omap processors tend to lag and consume battery, and the mali 400 is better than what either of those phones have. Id say its ICS but the razr still
Runs gingerbread
I was hoping for some more attention in here :/
I agree, omaps are battery hungry beast. Like my previous Optimus Black, man... i only got 12-14 hours with edge (1ghz UV smartass v2, also ****ty LG kernel haha). Same issue as my friend's Galaxy SL. I dunno if newer soc has a better behaviour.

Can Droid pad keep up with IPAD 3?

The new release of IPAD3 will hit Verizon and ATT on March 16, equipped with 4G+Wifi and non 4G. It's the fact that apple A5X chip (quad core) is 4 time faster that droid tegra 3, higher resolution (2048 x 1536 ipad vs Asus transformer 700series 1920 x 1200, which suppose to release around June, 2012). Together with the high end hardware, apple also boost their software with amazing video editor, autodesk (hand draw graphic design), camera editing software and namco games designed just for Ipad...I'm a droid fan but I just have to admit, Apple is one of warrior that we may NOT able to beat...I'm thinking of pick one up, the one without 4G (extra $30 a month) and use my charge for 4g tethering every time I'm on the road.
You fell for Apple's use of fancy words. The A5X chip is a dual core cpu with a quad core gpu. Yes, you get no more CPU performance, just more graphics performance, which almost nothing takes advantage of fully now with the A5. Besides the updated screen and new software, there is really nothing spectacular about the new iPad. Just like the iPhone 4S update, it's a few minor spec bumps that Apple marketing (they are a marketing company that just happens to also sell stuff) made sound like the latest and greatest technology. Wait until other manufacturers get a chance to actually start using the new and upcoming quad-core SoCs
It's also not a Droid Tegra 3 or Droid pad. It is a Tegra 3 processor, which can be used by anyone on any platform, and Android Tablets. The Tegra 3 is actually a quad core cpu with 12 core gpu (technically 5 core cpu), and who knows how it will benchmark against Apple's chip, since Apple didn't release any firm details about how the new A5X benchmarked higher than the Tegra 3, or how much higher, or if it was a production Tegra 3 chip.
Personally, I would wait to see what Samsung comes up with this summer/fall to counter it, and even if they don't have anything, I would still take a GalaxyTab 7.7 over an iPad any day of the week.

Non taken, I'm here for a nice hobby and for fun....that's all.
Question: are you a Droid fan or Android fan?
Anyway, not much more to say than what Imnuts said. The thing is, the iPad 2's A5 chip proved to beat Tegra 3 in a series of benchmarks, though T3 was running on Honeycomb(and they were offscreen benchmarks). I wonder if the results would have been different if T3 was running on ICS.
What I'm very curious to see is Samsung's offering(higher resolution screen and quad core Exynos). Maybe even with bone stock ICS. That would be my dream tablet

I have friends who are diehard apple fanboys and even they say they're not getting it because its "pretty much the same as the 2"... a lot of people are starting to catch on to what Imnuts said about marketing gimmicks and releasing old tech as "revolutionary"
that said I also agree that I'll be waiting for the next quad core beast from Asus ($200 Google Nexus tablet anyone?) or maybe Samsung but I don't want their ugly ass bloated touchwiz over ICS
p.s. the only good thing I could see being brought about by this 3rd iPad would be hopefully display manufacturers will see that its possible to make higher-than-1080p displays for a reasonable price... also LOL at them for including what is basically a laptop capacity battery in it, and I doubt it would really get 10 hours on 4G
blazing through on my Nexus Prime via XDA app
It still isn't worth getting one if the OS is just a magnified iPhone OS (like it can't do anything new compared to the iPhone 4s)

Uh... no. iOS is GPU accelerated. Its interface and UI relies heavily on the GPU, much more so than Android. The stronger the GPU, for example, the less checkerboarding you experience when scrolling webpages. Of course this is more than negated by 4x the pixels, so day to day performance may not be as good as on the iPad 2.
In Anand's testing they found the iPad 2's GPU to be about 30% faster on average than the Tegra 3. Apple's 2x claim is probably based on a specific test that targets one of Tegra's numerous weaknesses. That said, the iPad 3 uses the same GPU as the PS VITA (albeit without the dedicated VRAM and to-the-metal programming). It's a beast. The same goes for that hi-res screen, which won't be surpassed by a shipping product for a year at least.
Apple claimed that in order to support such a super high resolution display, the A5X graphic chip is the key. But..what ever, Nvidia is going to bench mark the A5X and their Tegra 3...the true will reveal. I may add if indeed Tegra3 is faster, I'm a very happy guy, cause I have my eyes on the coming Asus Transformer 700 due to release sometime in June 2012. Beside the hardware, Apple also released 5 killer apps; video editor(amazing photo editor and movie maker), autodesk(free hand graphic design), 2 new games from Namco and Epic, icloud garage band where 4 people (drumer, guitar, keyboard, bass) can play the same song over the internet.

iCloud seems very similar to Google's cloud services.
As for Autodesk, doesn't that company have an app(or apps) for android as well? Both OS systems have Photoshop Touch, which seems like a great photo editing tools in its own right.

The UI is no more or less accelerated now with ICS for Android from what I've read. The only stuff left in Android that isn't GPU driven isn't going to tax the CPU to render it. The only reason that the added GPU power will be needed is the high resolution, which is pointless IMO. Why get a higher resolution other than to brag about it? You think Samsung/LG/etc. couldn't make a higher resolution display if they wanted to? They're sticking to 1080p/720p because it's a standard resolution and you won't be powering unnecessary pixels if you don't have to, which you will be doing on that display when watching HD videos. Either way, I give it 3-4 months before someone displays a better product, if not sooner. No one has any idea how the OMAP5 really performs, or the quad-core Exynos chips, and if anyone will best the A5X, those are probably the best candidates.

Playing music as a band using the iPad 3 using "the cloud"(which pretty much means using the iPad's LTE modem) sounds like what multiplayer games on iOS and Android do.

Ugh iPad is only quicker cause it's less complex OS
Android will always be light years ahead of apple in technological advances it has usb plug ins since atrix and honeycomb
Apple is far more interested in marketing than creating the best device as long as they can keep u buying everything thru their e-stores they will be happy
I have an iPad 2 and tegra devices will ALWAYS have more features and a faster platform nuff said

The display on the Galaxy Tab 7.7 is gorgeous. Also, I have some Apple fanboy coworkers who admit that having a 7" iPad would be awesome, and that typing/holding an iPad can be cumbersome.
Oh iPad, you are so revolutionary.
Side rant: I love how Apple upgraded the cameras on the iPad3 and acted like it's a big deal. Cameras... on a tablet.. Who in the **** uses their tablet's cameras that often to warrant a hardware upgrade? The cameras were fine! How about updating the damn OS.
Don't get me started on Siri. Aimbot, anyone?
OK, for better comparison, let just comparing ONLY 4G device; Ipad3 clearly the winner here over any android tablet currently on the Market. Let's not even talk about the future, because it's endless and mute discussion.
People are so offensive when ever we talk about the "competitor". Like 'Ipad3 has the highest screen resolution", Oh that's not needed, it's not make that much of different. Come on admitted, they do have higher resolution than any other device out there. Sometime, we should hold back our egos and watch and listen, we may learn something new. I'm an Android fan, but sometime the competitor is better and I will admit they're better and sometime when Android is better, we should be proud. Only kids bashing other kids.

I would still take the GalaxyTab 7.7. And yes, it has a higher screen resolution, but how is it useful? The only good thing about that high resolution is that you could see pictures without zooming in as much. The more screen real estate you're getting, it's going to take developers a while to take advantage of it because it is such a huge increase. It's pointless for movies and videos, when is the last time you saw a movie with a resolution greater than 1080p? For video viewing, you have wasted screen space. I'm sure the display looks great, but until we actually have videos that are >1080i/p, I don't see a reason to have a higher resolution display.
