[Q] Is it THAT awful? [Xperia J] - Sony Xperia Miro, Tipo (Dual), J, E

Hello there. I've been considering these days to buy this device but lately I'm getting really discouraged to do so. I watched at least a dozen videos about the j and at least as many reviews. A couple of them praise the device for its display and okay performance for this price but most of the reviews are strongly negative and some even advise not to buy it at all. My mobile carrier offers me to buy Xperia J with a 2-year contract for 6 euro mothly without changing my plan. Is it a deal or I should reconsider it? I'm ot a tight budget and the only other option for this price range is Galaxy ace plus but I don't think I'll manage to live with its awful resolution.
Any opinions? Thanks

Better pick j over ace plus with its 2.3.6. Sure, theres negative reviews. But that will once you mod the phone. Bigger screen resolution always win over cheap smaller ones.

well if you're not the "hardcore mobile gamer type" and would just normally use the phone for call/text/internet/music plus some few movies then xperia j might be for you..forget galaxy ace plus...

I hate galaxys i bought an ace s5830i and the digitizer cracked very easily samsungs build quality is very poor even on there more reasont models ebay is full of wrecked galaxys the j is not that bad especialy for the price after a few mods it is very easy to live with. a duel core dose not mean better performance my partner has an xperia u and it is really bad worse than a stock j the screen redraws take a life time opening an app i even longer and multitasking forget about it lol.

A lot of online reviews are for the older ICS version of Xperia J which wasn't great.
If your just using the phone, messaging, facebook, twitter etc.. It's fine and smooth as butter with the current Jelly Bean release.
If your into photo's, movies, netflix, gaming, then it's definitely not the phone for you.

dont go for ACE coz there will be a problem later on with its physical memory saying its full and u might not be able to install apps.. Xperia J just think about it.. i would rather buy Xperia L its kinda close to the budget !!!

Hey thanks for the answers. I really appreciate it
It will be my first mobile phone with Android so I really don't know what to expect exactly. I'll be using it for music, web-browsing, reading documents and snap a photo here or there. I am not a heavy gamer at all but I find it rather disappointing I won't be able to watch HD videos :/
I also read comments that with the new update most of the lag got fixed and it's more stable now.

L was just introduced to the market where I live at (Bulgaria) and the price is kinda high - 260 euros without contract. The problem is that I want to buy a phone from my carrier with leasing and their catalogue is very poor in terms of device choice. For the money J was the only reasonable phone I could pick out.
I could wait for Sony to release their Xperia M that was introduced a few hours ago because it has everything I could ask for. But I am in real need of a phone right now. I can wait but I've been waiting for moths already.
I still haven't decided firmly but if I don't reconsider my choice I'll be buying the J this Thursday

if that's the case then go for it !!!

[Q] Is It Xperia Arc Worth it for an Upgrade?

So...
this is my current Situtation...
I've been under a Contract for +14 months now with my career; when i first got the contract i got an Xperia X10 Back on October 2010 but i got bored of it and around May this year i made a switch for Free with them for the SGS1 which i must say is a beautiful phone and I really love how the phone works even it's more than 16 months old since it came out.
Here in Guatemala we have not too many options in regards of High End Phones such as the SGS2 or HTC at all... But i have the option of a Free Upgrade for 1 Xperia Arc in early December.
I've got someone from here who is willing to buy my SGS1 for a really good price (around USD $500 - High End phones are kinda expensive here hehe) and i wanted to ask for your opinion if you guys think is it worth to upgrade to the Arc and sell the SGS1... I mean i have the option of selling any of them and keep the other...
What do you guys think?
Thanks!

Hey...well im Egyptian too. good to see u here, this phone is great, only few unfortunate customers got buggy devices, just make ur mind up, if u want better looks and camera go for neo v . im using this phone from around 6 months and i have no problem till yet...and im happy with it, only problem is the battery drain...Salaam
gt i9003 is a mid to high end phone with a good price tag (costs a bit less than galaxy ace in some stores!) and it a good phone for normal everday usage. The battery life is great, the battery can last for 3 days if you are normal user, mine is celebrating its 4th day
Its very worth its price, only if you are unfortunate and get a buggy device. Normally 1 change of the motherboard and it'll be alright
Cheers

This phone is definitely worth buying especially now our development community has grown so much recently
i recommend the 9000
it has a much bigger community and therefore more roms
from what i heard a working ics rom too
depends on the price you pay!
If its under 300 US$ (without contract, of course), its worth every penny!
If its above this pricetag, i wouldnt bother with it since its a rather old device with not much developer support

well we can't say that its grown bec. dev's come and go mainly bec. not much people have this device compared to the galaxy S and S2 but there is progress on custom roms on this device. But it all goes down to how much you want to pay. For me it's definitely worth every damn cent.

I think it´s a great phone to buy.
It works well, I like the battery capacitiy (mine lasts between 1,5 or 2 days.), you can install lots of roms and updates easily.
Its a pretty good phone , good for the price too. i bought it to get into Android and i fell in love with the OS , i always hated Apple and their products so Android came to the rescue.. Samsung support for this model however sucks but the community is always building custom roms and fixing things up so its pretty well worth it..

Deciding between phones: future updates

Good evening,
So after having had a dumbphone for quite some time, it's showing the end of it's life. (I'm currently using a Samsung C3050 if you're interested.) I'm wanting to make the big jump to a smartphone, but I'm not yet that consent with choosing one. I do not know all the down and upsides to everything.
And neither do I have a lot of money, being a student and all. So far I managed to pick out some phones, which are:
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 i8160
Samsung Galaxy S Advance i9070
LG Optimus 2X Speed P990
Sony Xperia Sola
Because of the little money I will have now and in the foreseeable future, I want the device to run a long and healthy in the inside of my pants pocket. Therefore I would like to receive update for quite some time, so it doesn't become an old phone months after I bought it. With that I mean, I want updates, and currently I would like my phone to be running Jelly Bean.
And now comes the problem that I can't seem to wrap my head around. I want Jelly Bean, and the updates that come after, either updates from the manufacturer or updates from a third party. The Galaxy Ace for example has an update to ICS, whilst the S Advance seems to have not. Both look like great phones, but it feels unsure to me that either of those will receive further updates. The Galaxy Ace even seems to be fading out of the stores, so I'm afraid Samsung will lose interest in that device soon and not bring out updates any longer, and neither the community is very much active for both the Samsung phones I selected.
Then I stumbled across the LG Optimus 2x Speed P990, which is also a dual-core, something that the previous phones also have. The only downside I see to that phone is that is comes from 2011, and thus is getting a bit older and might not receive that much updates, or might not become capable of that many updates.
The the Xperia Sola. I just love the way it looks, but the battery can't be replaced, there is not even ICS yet, and there seems to be indication from Sony that there will be even thought of JB. With those two things together, it feels like a phone which can't hold very long. I also considered the little brother of this phone, the Xperia Miro which should be released next month, while the price might justify the low spec, but then there is still the update issue.
Of course there is room for other suggestions, as long as it's in the same price range and available in the EU. I plan on using it as an all-round device, browsing the internet, chatting on irc, listening to (FLAC) music, and perhaps a couple of videos to entertain myself. The reason I selected dual cores is solely because of I think they will last longer.
I do give my apologies for the many words I have written. Therefore let me make a TL;DR to apologize.
Many, many thanks in advance!
TL;DR Looking for relatively cheap Android phone with JB in the foreseeable future, and future update support from either the manufacturer or the community for at least the upcoming three years.
There are no guarantees with any of those. I would think the Sony is the most likely to see JB. Samsung is somewhat hit or miss with phones outside of their flagship devices. Sony actively works to help devs with a few of theirs. LG has a pretty bad rep when it comes to leaving certain phones in the dust as well, but the Optimus should be okay. That's just my input.
First off where are you located? If your in the US go with the Galaxy nexus for $350 straight from Google. You will get all the latest OS updates with that phone.
Also you did say how much you plan on spending.

I've also looked a bit at the Sola, but what I don't like there is the small and embed battery in the phone. I don't get why Sony would pack a smaller battery for a phone that asks more.

Me neither. But know that all Xperia phones from 2012 were designed in Sony Ericsson era. The true Sony phones will come next year.

Today I was looking at the Galaxy S Advance and the LG Prada. I would prefer the S Advance over the Prada since it was cheaper, but there is no sign of support for ICS yet, the Samsung forums are quiet about ICS for the S Advance. Will there be updates for the S Advance?
And then I took a peek at the LG Prada. It's not that I wanted to go for the brand, but the specifications are nice and there is ICS on it already. But then, it is again somewhat more expensive. Would the Prada be worth it?
Hmm, well I personally have never been a huge fan of LG phones. That, plus Samsung's hold on the smartphone market is significantly more prominent than LG's. So if you're planning on flashing any custom software in the future (especially useful if you're not planning to get another one for a while), I'd pick one of the Samsung phones. Whichever one was more popular.
I still say Sony is your best bet. Out of the companies you mentioned they have the best record of supplying updates.

Future Proof Android Phone with Budget Constraint(20k inr/$360)

Well, I have been using LG Optimus One P500, currently running on CM7.2 nightly. It's been a great experience
but it's became really an old device(although unofficial CM9 can be run on this but buggy, very much buggy and with
laggy cam, problematic tethering and no youtube HQ).
So I am looking for a mid range android which is future proof for a few years. Even if it can't get the official update, it should run custom roms of upcoming Android versions properly.
So what should be approximate specs? I am thinking of Dual or really Powerful Single Core,512mb-1gb RAM and Bigger Than 3.2inches Display and at least 5mp Cam and Popularity(good Dev Following)
Some Phones I've sorted out. Feel free to add more options please(well, only international versions available in India).
Moto Defy Plus or XT535(heard something about locked Bootloader so not much custome rom?)
Sony Xperia Sola(matches my criteria but 1350mah Battery..eh? My P500 has 1500mah and lasts not so long)
Sony Xperia ARC S(single core..future proof?)
Galaxy Advanced(best among these but almost empties my pocket and old architecture CPU-U8500 for so much money)
Xperia P(Same as Galaxy Advanced but a little more pricier, still no AMOLED)
Galaxy S II (Over the budget, One year old..Probably I'll not go for it for the budget issue)
Thanks in Advanced.

I would say that Sony recently has really good update support for their products (all 2011 phones got ICS except xperia Play).
you may consider to get xperia P. it has 1gb RAM which I think an important factor to upgrade your OS (maybe more important than having powerful processor).
my second option is galaxy s II. don't go for mid-range phone from samsung (e.g galaxy advanced or gal ace 2).
samsung only gives update to their high-end products.
No phone is future proof. But if you wanted one that was going to get updates for at least a bit longer then the carriers or OEM issue them then I would get a nexus. You have to remember that unless an official update is released for an older device there will always be things theat may not work if a updated OS is ported from another device.

I would definitely recommend the Xperia P or if you decide you can swing it the Galaxy SII. The Xperia will receive long-term support and direct update via Sony and they are doing a lot to make sure firmware is readily accessible for developers. The Samsung should also continue to get relatively timely updates and if nothing else it has a huge dev community who will keep giving you access to the latest and greatest.
As mentioned nothing will be futureproof, but either of those two should keep you happy for some time to come.
I'm surprised no one's said it yet(hope I'm not missing something), but what about the Galaxy Nexus? It's US$349 from the Play Store right now. I'm unsure if you can purchase and ship it to India directly from the Play Store, but maybe you could find someone to help out?

Currently Nexus is not available in Indian Market and don't know why Google allowed only Play 'App' Store in India! Neither Music Nor Books unlike iTunes.
And if it would be available, it would be at a little higher..well quiet lot higher(for me..more than +5000rupees/$100) price range.
And Thank you guys, I am going for Galaxy S Advanced as no other phones offer so much features within this price range other than Xperia P. But why would I spend 2000 bucks extra when I am getting better spec(the AMOLED..pentile though). I hope all Galaxy S series will continue getting same attention of Devs as much its Grandfather S2(now S3) have been getting.
And I am pretty much convinced build quality wise and battery wise Samsung does a lot better than Sony.
Why don't you look at HTC One V or LG optimus L7? You can run custom roms on it as and when they become stable.

Upgrade from Z2 to XZ Premium?

I was wondering if its worthy for me to upgrade to the XZ Premium. Im currently using a Z2 with a permanently locked bootloader in other words I cant unlock it. I do have ExistenZ rom installed which is nice. Im just wondering is it worth spending the extra to go from a Z2 to an XZ Premium? Its only really software interface changes that I will use the most but is that very worthy alongside the hardware upgrades? Or am I better off saving the money and continuing with my Z2? The Z2 was one of the best Xperias for a long time and still can be said to be but im unsure whether its worthy to upgrade now.
All help on this decision will be appreciated. Thanks.
I upgraded from the Z2 to the Z5C. Mainly for the fingerprint support and the (supposedly) better processor. Only 10 months in to my Z5C, I decided to upgrade to the XZ Premium. Support for the Z2 ended back in 2015(?). so yes, I do recommend upgrading to the XZ Premium. I usually upgrade phones every 2 years, so the XZP will have to do me good for the time being. I'm happy with the phone and I love it!
I did consider other options like the Samsung S8, but after comparing the two (borrowed one from my friend), I settled on the XZP. Plus, it's faster than the s8.

Thank you for the decision. Its only price thats an issue for me the XZ Premium in the UK is around £500 ($650) cheapest so I want sure if it was worth the money but it seems youve sort of answered that. I will always upgrade to another Sony phone because I always have and although other phones are great I like having all Sony things as you may tell from my signature. I will consider the purchase the only thing that will stop me is the price but other than that it seems a viable option I may very well go for. Thanks.
Edit: Theres also the possibility I purchase one with a permanently locked bootloader like my Z2 so I should take that into consideration too otherwise no root unlike older Xperias where root could be done on locked bootloader.

Where did you purchase your Z2? I'm pretty sure the units on Amazon have an unlockable bootloader. I suggest you purchase one from there? Or if you prefer going to the store, I guess you can check if the demo phones have unlockable bootloaders.

I purchased it from Gumtree because money was also an issue then. I managed to get it for £220 in Feb 2015. The seller got it from Vodafone and I had to unlock the sim as Iam on another network which is why the bootloader is locked. On amazon the XZ premium is £610 but ive found one on eBay for £500 that says its from Amazon. There are cheaper dual variants on eBay but I dont think theyre UK models. It seems if the phone is purchased from EE or o2 in the UK then it will have a locked bootloader so I think I shouldnt have too much trouble. Thanks.

I just ordered an XZ Premium now that I should recieve by the 6-8th September I will still keep my Z2 as a spare. I managed to snag it for £500 it retails for around £600 in the UK so I think I got a good deal and its new too. Hopefully it was worth waiting for a cheaper price to drop. Im sure I will be satisfied with the purchase also in the future when Sony drops support for it there will be more support for it on XDA.
Xpiera z2 was the best sony phone until XZ premium - so if you need a change, its the best moment.

Yeah I think ive made a good choice. Even the XZ was decent but its annoying how Sony release a new phone every 6 months. The XZ1 is the first Sony phone to actually be a bit of a downgrade to that of the previous flagship as its basically an XZ Premium with a 1080p display. Thats as far as im aware ive never seen Sony release a device like this before also if my purchase is legitimate then I will have snagged a bargain too.
One other thing I would like to know though is that does anyone run the device at native 4k all the time? If so is it worth doing and is there much of a difference? I read through the 4k thread but it seems to be mixed. Nobody really says its worth doing or not its kind of mixed. Also I dont really care if it affects battery life as long as its a worthy benefit.

I tried it for a bit and I don't think it's worth it.
Sure text looks smooth as a kindle but it makes the phone stutter every now and then.
It also causes some compatibility issues which seem far too inconvenient without a way to switch resolution on the go.
When I do want to use it (during VR), I'll just switch it then switch back.

When I do want to use it (during VR), I'll just switch it then switch back.

Wow this is great! Even by watching this on my Xperia Z2 it looks pretty nice and life like. I would watch it on a 4K TV/monitor but it looks good enough at 1080p on my Xperia Z2 screen. I can only imagine how good it would look on an actual 4K screen though I am tempted to have a look. The colours shown really show how vibrant they are and the auto focus is so much more superior to that of my Z2 just the fact it can focus that close. I cant wait to recieve it I just got confirmation and a tracking number that I should recieve it by Tuesday. Joke is this phone has a better screen than my 4K bravia as Sony dont wanna support HDR for it.
One thing I would like to know. Does the phone still record 120fps at 720p using timeshift video if its still called that or does is the resolution bumped up for 120fps since it supports upto 960fps? Just wondering because with the 960fps you cant pick where you want the slow motion and 720p only looks so good, would be beneficial if its 1080p over 720p and would only make sense since it can record up to a high framerate. Please let me know, thanks.

Does the top one work like timeshift video? Also I was wondering if the resolution is the same for all or different for 120fps. Thanks.
