Going backwards? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

My Verizon s3 is getting horrible signal and data speeds. It's been going on for a week or 2 so its not like its a issue with vzw. Plus I know this due to speed tests with another device. My question is can I go from a aosp ROM to a touchwiz based ROM by just flashing in recovery or do I need to Odin back to that firmware then flash said touchwiz ROM?

Use recovery. I would avoid ODIN unless you really need to use it (soft bricked). It's much safer and easier to just flash zips in recovery prepared for you by our awesome devs. ODIN packages also overwrite all the phone's partitions so you would have to root/unlock bootloader again. Just make sure you are flashing a ROM made for the right device and that if the ROM is not packaged with a kernel, make sure you flash a compatible kernel.
When did these problems start? Changing from AOSP to TW probably wouldn't fix a problem like you are having. It sounds hardware related.

Thanks man. Actually the second I went from tw ROMs I noticed it. Gonna flash back and see. If its a problem with the device I'll get it replaced.

It's known that AOSP ROMs generally have a worse signal than TW ROMs. Most likely that's the problem.

Yeah I flashed a tw rom and my signal is stronger and a speedtest is drastically better.

without fully wiping? It may or may not work, and you may or may not have bugs. Generally when switching bases its smart to do a clean install to prevent any possible issues.
Wow. At first I thought you meant a rom for the original HTC g1 android phone.
Then I thought you meant a galaxy s 1 rom.
To both of those questions I nearly cried.
Then I realized you were referring to the baseband. And to that I would say give it a shot. It's not going to permanently hurt anything if it doesn't work and it may very well be fine since they are both touchwiz roms

[Q] Keep new firmware but use old modem/rpm?

I have a rooted/unlocked bootloader with the stock Touchwiz ROM on my phone, and since we're all having problems with the slow LTE speeds, I was wondering if I would be able to flash the modem/radio from the MD1 or KL3 onto my phone for better signal/speeds?

You can flash them, but it may or may not break some features especially if you flash an AIO (All In One)
Thanks! I'll have to dig around here and see what I can find

This worked for me, but it took a few tries. The first couple times gps got screwed up. I ended up doing a factory reset, then odin flashed back to mb1 (unrooting) . Then I let it update, rooted again with the md3 bootchain and then flashed the mb1 firmware. Happy to say Gps lock is instant and I'm back to normal 4g sppeds
Screw you Verizon!!! Why should we have to fix something you broke!

You might also consider some of the custom TW ROMS that have all the OTA has to offer and more with better stability. Synergy, Hyperdrive and MOAR come to mind, but there are others as well in the development section.
I took the update the other day, but I flashed the previous one a few days ago.works fine

when I try to use the camera, i get error. Warning: Camera Failed, on other roms I was getting Camera Error: camera unable to to connect ...failed error...not sure what to do here All the kernels change when the roms change..
radio is MF1

This is different than what I've seen, have you flashed the newest cm10 nightly and gave it a go? Everything sounds like it should be working. I know a lot of nightlies have been giving people camera issues.

Have you gone completely back to stock with Odin? I'm confused if you used a stock rooted rom or cleanRom.
If an odin back to stock doesn't work I'm out of ideas.

I am using CleanRom. I had previously used odin to get back to stock when I had issues with losing my iemi. My camera worked then briefly on 10.1 but its been downhill since

Ok, well if it worked then it's not like it's completely busted.
Try to odin completely back to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1974114
This will ensure everything is perfectly stock, flash the mb1 image and then ota to mf1 and reroot, then once everything is on the mf1 base, only flash TW roms based on the mf1 base or use AOSP roms.

If it is working then suddenly not in the same day I'm leaning toward hardware issue. Have you tried restoring to stock but not the newest update? Try a older firmware. I had a friend I helped root his s3 and there was a issue with the newest firmware giving this error when flashing custom roms since the roms were based off the older firmware. Hope this helps if not I'm sorry about your phone

Tacking onto what @ems3 posted, you could try this as well which involves Odin and flashing the pit file. Disregard everything after the first post as there was an unnecessary discussion that quickly followed.

I aslo have camera errors today after flashing the Synergy ROM (r484). I'm set on this ROM because it is the only one I've found that will
Support other cell carriers on a Verizon SCH-I535 and I need to switch carriers in a couple of days. Some one in a developer thread said that it should get the older firmware flashed to fix the camera or else I could choose to change the kernal. My firmware is I535VRBMF1 and what was sugested was MB1 firmware. I have several questions. What would I risk or loose by going to the older firmware? How do I get it and flash it (I have Odin but haven't used it yet). The Kernal came with Synergy ROM and is refered to as Ziggy's.

You don't stand to lose anything except possibly data connection and speed, and signal strength and quality. You can find the all in one (AIO) zips from Invisiblek's thread, just flash VRBMB1 aio in recovery. Invisiblek does not make any of these that are Odin flashable for JB and beyond.

[Q] Kinda Confused Here..

So guys. I got my VZW GS3 flashed to simple mobile today and it works I got G internet signal and mms and such. But as of now for some reason. On white backgrounds on any app the screen flickers. So it's running bonestock a ,vzw Rom ,do I download Roms for T-Mobile gs3 ? Since simple mobile uses tmobile radios. Or do I still download VZW gs3 Roms and set the apns and such? Will I lose the flash?? Not sure if it was flashed to work or that they unlocked the baseband..
Any advice would be great!!
Im thinking if you paid money for your i535 to be flashed to Simple Mobile... you should ask for a refund.

believe me, i wouldnt do this. My father insisted in switching in order to save a ton of bucks at the end of the month
Were you running BoneStock before the flash? It has been my experience that each S3 is differently when it comes to custom ROMs. A ROM that works for you may not work for me, even though we have identical phones.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk
You must stick with SCH-i535 ROMs. Especially SCH-i535 kernels and modems. Most ROMs made for other models won't even flash due to self checking Updater-Script. But kernels and modems do not have this check and you will brick if you flash them.

Gotcha, Ill stick to Verizon S3 roms, hopefully i dont lose the flash, not quite sure if they unlocked the baseband though, Global settings should work if i flash a CM10 rom correct?
and by that i mean setting my mobile network to Global and inputting the simple mobile APN?

You should be able to use the simcard when you change the settings to GSM only. I've tried a T-Mobile sim in my i535 both in Bonestock ROM and CM. Didn't test the data, but text msgs and calls worked fine. I used the phone info app to change settings.

Updates while on custom kernel?

Ok, so I'm no stranger to modding and XDA but every phone I've always had I always flashed custom Roms immediately so I'm not sure how it works on stocks. I'm rooted with unlocked bootloader on the stock ROM with Franco's kernel. Can I install system updates or is it best to do that on stock kernel and does being rooted with unlocked boot loader affect it? Thanks for any help.

The OTA should contain the stock kernel, so you would just need to flash the custom one afterwards. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't see why it should be different from what I said...

Sorry, I wasn't clear: most likely the OTA itself contains the stock kernel, therefore it installs it instead of whatever you already have. After the OTA you should just have to (re-)flash your custom one back and be good to go.

worse case scenario you can flash an update zip but like previously mentioned the kernel is not what generally causes the issue but the recovery. I do not think you will have an issue but hey there are some nice custom roms out there with options give one a shot. Just nandroid you current setup
Remember custom roms are running 4.4.4

Yeah I know, I always use custom Roms cause I generally have phones that have some OEM ui plastered on so since this is already close to stock I'm going to ride it out and see how CM does updating for a bit. Especially since they promised L within 3 months after it's release.
