Sense 5 fail ? - HTC One S

So I just finaly previewed sense 5 thanks to all the ppl who helped port it .
So I only just noticed that they have ruined some of the most defining sense features .
Full screen are widgets virtually gone ....
They left 1 analog clock that's a 1x1 widget , Wtf it that
The new weather widget is totall garbage
The one on the blink feed is ok but you can't set it on your home screen .
Its seems they could of left a lot of the things they removed .
New app drawer also garbage , and why is the weather widget in the app drawer ?
Seems like sense 5 is more of a franken Rom built on a de sensed sense base with crappy windows 8 and android 1.5 features ..
Being a big sense fan , I am truly let down
Anyone else share the same feeling ?
What's your opinion

first time i saw sense 5 i thought "hey something new, cool" but after seeing it in action on the htc one was enough to tell its a fail (for me, imo).
and i just dont need this news kinda thing, i want my homescreens and more customization which sense never offered yet, to my disappointment.
(like having simple quick settings in drop down like 4.2.2. stock) < my wishes for sense 6/7 lol...
i hope the devs here will do more sense4+ roms, even when sense 5 is truly out =)

i also have same feeling. İf we get a stable base then we can think different. Some widgets can be ported also sense 4+ launcher can be ported its not a big problem right now. But sense 5 is fast butter fast i must say that..

Hopefully the Rom community can build sense 4 into sense 5

dunno why u opened a thread for this
there is already a general thread for sense 5

I feel the same. I dint like it. Who needs all the bloody feeds on their home screen. I can damn google for them whenever needed

IMO, far from it.
I do not like the sense app drawer or launcher in general at all (never have), however, I would be using nova anyway so those things won't be a problem at all.
Blinkfeed looks all right, would never use it though, again not a problem, disable all the sources and swipe to the right or just install a different launcher.
Most of that stuff is easily fixable with 3rd party apps
For me sense V5 is epic for these reasons:
- nicer UI, more minimal and closer to stock android look
- no longer has labels for the icons on the top i.e. menu under the 3 dots
- got rid of the stupid big tabs on the bottom of some sense apps and replaced them with the stock tabs at the top, this will suit are smaller screen/lower res. far better
- zoe and the camera plus the gallery with live tiles/thumbnails are the highlights for me
- less bloated and less heavy so performance should be a bit better and we should get a wee boost in usable storage
- plus it might be more power efficient so better battery life
The person who was wanting quick setting like stock android, the reason sense doesn't have that is because it isn't based on the newest version of JB i.e. 4.2.2, once we get that update (supposedly we are getting the newer version of sense and 4.2.2 not the current one based on 4.1.2) then we will have those quick settings

We have a sense 5 discussion thread here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2175950

How hard will it be to Make Desire Stock?

I'm an AT&T subscriber and i've been waiting on the Nexus one or compatible device.
I really don't know which is better between the nexus and the desire, but I know I do like the Physical buttons and the optical trackpad on the desire. I'm just not sure I want the Sense UI over Android.
Does the Sense UI still allow animated backgrounds and have all the features that vanilla Android has?
My main concern is the fact that it seems to take manufacturers with UI over Android a while to upgrade to the latest Version of Android.
So what do you guys think the best choice will be? And how hard will it be to remove Sense off the Desire and make it Vanilla Anroid? Will it then get the OTA updates just like the NExus One?

Yes someone can make a stock android 2.1 rom for the desire. HTC SENSE UI has everything that stock android has except (correct me if I'm wrong) the new launcher.
In every htc sense device you can just turn off sense and just use stock android so no problem there.
The device won't get major updates from google (like OS upgrades) but it might get minor updates (like 3G fixes, bug fixes, newer flash)
Just so that you know Sense UI is android except with a skin, like sense on the hd2.
I would get the Desire (you get both stock and sense ui, the desire has more RAM then the nexus one, the desire looks much better and sleeker.)
Agreed. Couple points:
1. I own a Nexus. It's very good. I'm a WinMo guy and it was good enough to convert me to a phone with no keyboard.
2. I'ld get the desire. Its almost like a 2nd gen N1. Takes away most common faults: bad network coverage, problems with capacitive buttons, vanilla interface.
3. Furthermore, Sense is great. Coming from an HTC WinMo phone I reeeaeaally missed Sense. Android clocks look cheesy while sense looks classy. There is now a dedicated phone button on the screen. My number one complaint was I hate the way iphones find contacts to call them. It's like 4 clicks and a ton of scrolling. Android is like that. But with Sense on, Sense dialer is a smart dialer. Just start typing their name on dialpad (dad = 323) and it quickly finds the number.
4. Although sense can be turned off, its not "just" a launcher. Its also a dialer, a contact app, an entire new homescreen with 7 screens and specialized htc widgets preprogrammed into them, with saveable custom homescreens called "scenes." New weather app, new app drawer with no 3d effects. Also, Sense ("Rosie") is said by Rom chiefs to be built deep into the "framework" of Android, which is why they sadly havent just ported the apps to stock yet.
thanks guys, Looks like the Desire is the best choice then... Now I just hope that it really comes to AT&T. And SOON!!!
i wonder if at&t will screw up the desire like they did with the backflop?
Brickflop, you mean. But I wouldn't be surprised if the Desire gets the same treatment.

[Q] Questions about Sense and Android 4.0

Hello guys,
I've just recently got the One S on contract from Netcom and coming from a Samsung phone this really has been a new experience for me all together. But I have a problem. The phone itself works flawlessly and lags nothing compared to the HTC One X - but I really, really, really HATE SENSE.
I just can't seem to get used to it and since I've pretty much done custom flashing on my old Galaxy S since the very start, I just can't wait to replace SENSE as soon as possible - in the mean time, would it be possible to just unlock the device and put a STOCK version of ICS on it? Like one for the One S so that I get to keep stuff such as the HTC browser and maybe the custom Alt+Tab kind of thingy they put on?
Personally would like to build my own custom ROM with some mixed ingredienses but I wouldn't know where to start.
Any ideas? Or do I just have to wait and stick to this in the mean time?
As a stop-gap measure, you could install another launcher. I did this on the HTC Sensation for awhile before we started having either the non-sense options or true AOSP builds like we have now. From my limited experience, this is a flagship device and developers and users and documentarians will show up. The Sensation has a pretty rich community of both sense and AOSP builds now. One cautionary note though. On my Sensation running a modified version of CM9 there are things still being fixed. You may find early versions of ICS will have a variety of issues as developers get things solved. Its particularly hard before source gets released though. Its like peddling a bicycle backwards in a dark tunnel when its raining.
As mentioned above, install Nova launcher for now.

I am going with the One S because it runs Sense 4 ( best android overlay)
I was going to go with Samsung Galaxy S2 but my friend showed me his, everything about TouchWiz was unappealing from the large text the stale interface.

I guess each one has it's own taste
My gripe with sense is just what you describe as appealing.. the small black text on white background in most of the interface is killing my eye-sight at night. Guess I have been used to the Android 2.3 experience for too long and as much as Sense 4 works wonders - it just not my cup of tea. This could of course be fixed if there was a "black" skin that could be applied. Preferably with as little bright colors as possible (I know, may sound boring but will eventually save a few hours of battery in the long run due to the AMOLED display running "less hot" )
I'm in the same situation as the OP, really enjoyed ICS on my Desire until the display broke (got slammed display first into table... IKEA > HTC)
Anyways here's hoping that I understand these nuggets correctly: "MoDaCo Custom ROMs are based on official ROMs - either shipping or leaked."
"Stock style and Vanilla (ICS) style prebakes will be available as the ROM takes shape."
Source: first post in [ROM] 11 Apr - MoDaCo Custom ROM for the HTC One S - Sense and Vanilla styles in the One S Development forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592126
So hopefully Paulobrien just removes Sense etc from an official ROM. Not sure whats up with the cooking lingo though, maybe there is a dev-chef-lingo dictionary somewhere on XDA!
Also I second your request for where to start learning to build your own ROM! Should post a Q in the noob-friendly thread here.

Perhaps you are right
Looking at sense 3.0 interface , the black blackground is weird, sense 4 with white background for settings seems much more natural. I have spent quite some time around my friends who have EVO 3D and Sensation, and I have to admit I will miss the eye catching animations and the easy access carousel function. Of course this is will be my first HTC phone so I can see how people hate the white look of settings. Coming from an iPhone with white settings too, it will be a similar transition for me. Sense just seems to have so much depth and much to explore compared to other Android Overlays. Having ICS along with it just makes the experience much smoother and sweeter.(Pun partially intended )
So... can anybody tell me if the Stock ROMs that have been cooked for the One S recently work good enough to run for production (i.e. HTC camera, launcher, weather widget)
I really would like to feel that AOSP experience again just like on my old Galaxy S. But I don't want to loose any functionality

MIUI to ONE XL coming soon!

Over at the MIUI site, there some new about MIUI ROM being created for the HTC ONE X being in beta right now. Additionally they talk about how one of their developers is getting the HTC ONE XL from AT&T and will be changing the beta for the ONE X to work for the XL as well. Just though I should share these awesome news
thats great but doesnt miui basically emulate ios
Not at all. The stock miui theme looks a little like iOS but the miui theme engine can make your phone look like anything you want

it's basically the best of both worlds.
BUT. It's also WILDLY themeable and that's the reason I like it so much.
OMGOMGOMGOMG this makes me that much more excited to get my phone. lol. MIUI has been and most likely will always be my favorite rom basically ever, aside from AOSP. I like to use both on occasion.
I don't know why anyone would want to replace the One X's stock interface with the MIUI one. Sure, past Sense versions have been bloated, and MIUI has been a great (in some ways) replacement. Quick, pretty, functional. But I haven't had a moment's lag on my One XL, so I don't need anything quicker/more responsive. Any increase in responsiveness would be moot. And (IMHO), MIUI doesn't look as good as Sense 4. Lastly, you're actually going to lose functionality by running MIUI. I can almost guarantee you'll lose many great camera features, such as the awesome burst mode and simultaneous video/photo taking. HDR likely won't translate over either.
On another point, someone mentioned once (can't remember who, but I think it was a Cyanogen dev) that the MIUI team doesn't pay as much attention to security holes as they should, instead focussing on function and UI bugs.
Just my two cents!
Miui would be awesome and I agree the theme aspect of it is just awesome and given I'm a theme addict it would be ideal for me. This is exciting news indeed.
Sent from wherever I am!
whaaaaaaaaaaat?! this is very unexpected, but great, news!
i'm a lover of MIUI. they're just now getting stable-ish releases on the GNex but not a dialy driver imo. hope i hang on to the HOX long enough to see a stable one.
If I could just find a rom or something similar to what I have now on my cappy that would be great. And the only two main things I like is how it puts my weather forecast in the notification pull down bar and it also shows weather and upcoming calendar events on the lockscreen.
I'll be installing the AT&T One X beta as soon as I see it. MIUI's so freaking awesome, I love how each part of the phone (lock screen, task bar, UI etc) can be skinned on it's own. People who think MIUI's just a wanna be iOS probably haven't dug into it. I initially installed it because I was an iOS fan with an Android phone. But as I got into the theming I was just blown away.
OMG! I need this!
I used MIUI on my Evo 4G for well over a year, my fav ROM ever. I cant wait if this is true.
Meanwhile, you can use the MIUI home launcher

MiHOME doesn't work well with out device. It's buggy and laggy. One of the devs from MIUI.us said he could bring the ROM to our phone but he needs the phone! I cant just send my phone across the country, lol.

The Perfect Rom (HTC One S)

Hi All:
Did you ever think how the perfect rom should be ?
a Perfect rom for me is a rom which
1- Have CM settings and options .
2- Have the Sense Image Camera App working as stock rom.
3- Heavy duty Battery serving.
4- No bugs or force close.
5- Stable with No mistakes.
What else ??
Is such a rom even exist ??!
I don't know if this wish is so hard to achieve for HTC or any other mobile band company.
for me my problem with the stock sense rom is stability and little amount of setting available for the user, App keep crashing .....
and some thing driving me crazy which it is that I can't turn vibration off when I answer a call because there is no option to do that , HTC team think that every one like this option and they forget that people think in different way and what you love must I hate it.
Come on HTC think again about what you are doing.
Samsung , Sony , HTC ....ect the only thing they care about is to distinguish from each other " I'm using Android but my Android is different than your Android" ..... Just Like Children
In the end I'd like to say that I respect Huawei so much, they offer for the user to use stock Android system and other Huawei UI in case that you don't like the stock Android, other companies should check and learn how to satisfy the customer
I would love a cm10+ Rom with sense camera.. best of both.. don't know if it can be done though.. no bugs etc is a given..

Why don't you try the Viper ROM?
It has the Sense Cam (CM will probably never have it) and you can enable the CM-like quicksettings in the notification bar. It also has pretty good battery life and is also close to having no bugs.
No bugs? Yea dream on, thats never gonna happen as long as its humans who writes the code.
I switched from Viper to CM a few months ago and have been extremely happy with the product. Viper was unfortunately too slow, even when OC. CM10 is extremely smooth and fast, even without a custom kernel for OC. The camera for CM, however, is extremely disappointing. It is not nearly poor enough where I would switch ROMs, but it definitely needs considerable improvement to been anywhere near that offered by any Sense-based ROM.
My vote is for CM with good camera, too.
What about Snap Camera - haven't used it but I've heard good things about it.
Thank you for your replies guys
For me I'm using Viper One S 2.1.0
It is cool rom but .............. still there is no real CM like settings.
In the first place , why we selected an Android phones ............... there is Windows Phone 8, iOS Apple , Nokia Symbian and more....
But our choice was Android, the ability to fully control & customize the mobile.
Stock roms specially sense make alot of limitation and even also with alot of bugs and unstable performance after long process of destroying the real And pure Android !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I believe that Google should put a condition to any mobile company want to use Android which it is offering the customers the freedom between using the Stock company rom (sense ,touch wize samsung ....ect..) or the pure Google Android.
Then we will see how many users will keep using a rom like sense
Liquidsmooth by Droyd is my favourite right now. Fastest rom I've ever used. And it looks stable so far!

It is a matter of open source, all what HTC should do is to provide a fix for camera app in CM and well known roms to satisfy their loyal customers

name a setting in cm that doesn't exist in viper..... besides quiet hours...
you have quick settings, you can change battery icons, you can change carrier txt, you can do MORE than what cm offers actually....
PS since sense is closed source you'll never see sense camera on AOSP it's impossible to do since every app that you see in sense is tied to the framework.
and if you don't like sense go buy a nexus phone... seriously.. sense is great and with dev's like torx he gave you more options than half the AOSP roms have.. and what limitations you're speaking of i'd really like to know, all the included sense apps have 10 times for thought and convienence set that stock aosp.. though i do agree that google should make all oems allow users to choose aosp or oem provided there's a reason they dont.. Form factor. The whole point of the One S for a lot of people is to have a slightly smaller phone that allows you to browse comfortably one-handed without adjusting your grip (I'm sure someone will claim they can do the same with a One X or Nexus, but come on... 4.7" is a bit much for a lot of people, let alone 5" in the Galaxy S 4).
Also, build quality in the One S might be a bit better than the Nexus 4 and certainly anything by Samsung. Would love to have an HD screen in this size but the QHD isn't bad. Anything over 250 ppi is fine for my eyes.

That was my thoughts when buying the phone last year. The One S looks and feels unique, and the screen size is perfect for normal phone & texting usage. I had the option to pickup the Galaxy S III for $50 more, but the Sense UI felt smoother to me - not to mention the camera app.

Sense 5 - what makes it better?

My apologizes to create a new thread about Sense 5 which seems to be a hot and controversial topic right now.
I've got my hands on that controversial ROM with Sense 5 a couple days ago just because I was curious to see what kind of improvements Sense 5 over Sense 4+ will offer.
I don't really want to discuss a ROM itself, only Sense 5 is what interests me at this point.
To be honest I did not like it at all. Sure, it was snappier than my current ViperS 3.1.2 with Sense 4+ but besides Blinkfeed which I hardly care about it did not seem to offer any major improvements...
To me what made Sense and HTC phones preferred choice (besides hardware + design) were Sense looks and widgets that are mostly gone from Sense 5. I rely on mail and messaging widgets daily and also calendar/task widgets with my upcoming appointments have a prominent placement.
Without these I can just install any deSensed ROM on my HTC Sensation and slap any good launcher on top of it to get a similar results...
I know that I am coming late to the party, Sense 5 has been available for ages now, but until today I never had a chance to try it on my beloved Sensation. After my recent experience I will probably stick with Sense 4+ for a very long time because it works really well for me and I have also decided to postpone purchase of a new cellphone (I am still waiting for HTC to introduce a new flagship phone with micro SD slot included - HTC One Max is not what I am looking for).
I would like to hear about what are your thoughts as far Sense 5 is concerned and why should I forget about my favorite Sense 4 widgets...
Im not a Sense fan, but Sense5 should be lighter and faster.

As I have mentioned in my post, it is definitely snappier (because it's lighter = missing features). Obviously I use specific apps to do what I am trying to accomplish but for me specifically what made Sense attractive choice were widgets that provide needed information with one glance. These missing features in Sense 5 is what makes me to consider abandoning HTC phones all together and try different brand (Sony Z1 looks good to me).
Maybe I should rephrase what I am trying to say... "What makes Sense 5 better then lets say Nova launcher for example?"
I haven't tested one yet, but I LOVE how Sense looks.

I wholeheartedly agree, looks of Sense was originally what attracted me to HTC phones in a first place, in my case starting with HTC Diamond. Damn, I am probably getting old :crying: since I still like "retro" Sense 4 design bit more than oversimplified Sense 5 icons. But it's mostly features that I value. My current ViperS 3.1.2 with it's tweaks makes my Sensation an amazing phone. The only thing I was hoping for with Sense 5 was faster, snappier performance without giving up on features.
Just give it some time. The official ViperS Sense 5 (with tweaks) isn't even out yet.
If you're looking for some widgets & features, I think some modders will take care of that.
And well, thank god for custom ROMs we can pretty much have any version of Sense on Sensation. 7 different versions! Damn.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I used the calendar, calculator, music and Notes widget the most, and they're gone from Sense 5. That's pretty much the only thing I miss, I really don't know why they would throw it out, it was something that differentiated sense from other launchers. Now it's all the same to me.

That is what I mean...
I have Asus Memo Pad 10, Tegra 3 makes it pretty fast and cost/value is very good as well. I have replaced original (slow) launcher with Nova launcher (currently my favorite) and decided to reduce number of screens to 3 although I might as well do fine with one only.
With general lack of useful widgets my screen is filed with grid of app icons and folders. It begins to resemble Apple products I despise.

Venom sense 5 have many widgets like calendar ,music ,gmail, contact ,old clock and new clock too so don't worry once we get full working sense 5 we other dev might be able to port those other remaining widgets too like note .btw what other widgets u want whether u don't need in sense 5 as u can see it everywhere ,friendsstreem u also don't need that cause of blink feed ,which r the remaining (most of them on sense 4 r useless)

You think those widgets can be ported? I know when I was on the desire forums that some had tried to port some widgets from GB sense 3.6 to earlier sense, but I don't think they managed to that. Hope it will be possible

Great, hope we'll get them as well.
I Like Sense 5 but.....
I like Sense 5, but I misse old Dial, I think is better sense 4+
Blinkfeed of sense 5 is useless. It's usable in sense 5.5 only, because there you can finally customize the sources to be displayed.
So if the only or main reason to switch to sense 5 is just blinkfeed then there's no reason, because you won't use it much.
I wish that sense 5.5 porting would be feasible
I may have misunderstood the OP but all of these are in Sense 5.

You do realize that sharing that here isn't allowed, right? ._.
And even that KangSense has a few bugs.. I think it's like Team Venoms old build, which another developer 'stole' and fixed a little.
I'm gonna wait for Team Venom's official.

You can share anything as long as it is not warez. At the end of the day until someone has PROOF it is team venom rom then it's allowed to be shared
I only shared so people can flash to get a taste of sense 5 that's all.

That ROM is not allowed to be posted here as it is a kang of Team Venom ROM and kanging us not tolerated here.
Posting a link to it again will cause me to take things further next time.
Please be sure this is the last time it happens.
