TF101 Won't turn on - Question - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am hoping someone can help...
I have a TF101 tablet that my kids use and we use to play movies on when we travel.
Yesterday my kid was playing a game on it. When it was dinner time she exited the game and pushed the power button to turn off the screen. Now it will not turn on.
It is not dead (the battery was just charged prior to her playing the game). I tried holding down the power button for 15 seconds. I tried Power + Vol down button, Power + Vol up, but nothing! Just a black screen.
Last year the exact same thing happened to the tablet. I was using it, turned off the screen and then nothing! Just a Black Screen and nothing I did worked. It was still under warranty so I sent it to ASUS. They received it, fixed it and shipped it back out to me 3 days later. When I got it back it I noticed that nothing was wiped from my tablet. All my apps, all my data, everything was still there. So, I figured it was THAT big of a problem that they had to do a Hard Reset or replace my tablet.
That said, since it happened again, I am hoping someone might have a fix for this. It is not under warranty anymore and we are going on a trip in 1 month and I would love to get it working so the kids can watch movies on it.

Won't it turn on when you connect the charger to it either ?

Yea, nothing.... I plug in the power cable and still just a black screen. (I have 2 cables and tried them both)

I know they are prone to pulling the LCD cable out of the board inside if they are dropped or knocked, the cable is wrapped around the battery which shifts when its knocked and pulls it out
If you're happy to open it up, its an easy enough fix to push it back in

Well, I took it apart and the cable seems to be ok. I even removed the cable and reinserted it. Still nothing.
I did not check the other end of the cable (the one that goes under the board) as it would require me to remove a lot more stuff to get to it.
I am pretty sure it is the screen though because if I hold the power button down, after 10 secs or so I can hear a *click* sound. So I am assuming it is still working, just something is messed up with the screen.
I might break it down even more and check out the other end of the cable when I have some more time.

I hope it's not you power button, because request changing part of motherboard (79$)

Plugging in the charger would turn the screen on
---- @op - Does the screen backlight come on ?
If not, if you tilt the TF and look carefully at the screen, can you see an image ?

So apparently I was messing with the wrong cable... I found another video that shows what cable to check. I will be checking it later today, wish me luck... I was checking the silver cable running from under the battery.

Yea that's the cable I thought it was too, my mistake!
I've not had this exact problem so assumed as it was wrapped around the battery that was the cable in question

Well, that was it! Once I opened it up again and looked at the right cable I could see it was pulled 1/2 way out. Plugged it back in and it worked!

Great news!

fix to turn on transformer 101 tablet
I had this problem with my asus and windows tablets. Unplug everything from it including base micro sd card and any usb plugs get an alcohol wipe clean all the charger plugs and sockets don't soak just wipe. When done plug charger to mains power and tablet it should turn on. If the on board battery is flat may take a couple of goes to start. Worked a treat for me.

What to do if I can't see any image or any light?

And btw when I press the power button, immediately within 1 second I can hear a click sound.

[Q] Xoom went belly up it seems

I have a us spec wifi xoom. Or I've had is perhaps more of a correct statement now.
What happened was this:
Tablet was working fine in the evening. Had about 80% power left in it.
Today in the afternoon got around to it and had to do some stuff on it...and it was dead.
Wouldn't react to either the Power Button, or the Volume Up plus Power button.
Initial thoughts - ah some app caused the battery to drain. Or was it the custom ROM. No worries, will hook it up to the charger.
So i hook it up and the charging light comes on. But XOOM wont turn on while plugged in. Its been charging for an hour plus, LED's still white and XOOM's still unresponsive.
Any ideas what to do?
Did you try holding volume up and power for a few seconds? Sometimes than can take 5 to 10 seconds to work.

if I was you, I'd either have my dealer send it in or, if that is not option to you, open it up and disconnect the battery for a little while...
maybe another idea: how does your power-button feel? From the symptoms it would also be plausible that just that one button had a malfunction. You wouldn't be able to unlock your xoom, power+vol-up wouldn't reset the thing, if you configured your xoom to use the charge-led while the xoom is powered on, it'd glow once you plugged your xoom in, etc... Does your pc detect your xoom if you plug it in via usb?
No the XOOM isn't detected by the computer. Power button feels as it always felt. Clicky and responsive.
As for opening it up, I dont have a TORX screwdriver or however that thing is called, to open the XOOM up. I was thinking along those lines a swell, disconnect all power for a while and then try. Will try to get the tools tommorow and see waht happens.

If you've got an sdcard in it remove it and try the usual power in tricks.
I've read sdcards can stop the Zoom powering on especially if it goes completely flat...

You may have fried the processor inadvertently say if an app went max out for 2-3 hours and killed the battery just a thought.

Battery had charge in it when I first picked up with the issue. LED was white. If battery is dead LED is red.
Frying the processor - maybe. Hope not
If you have a white light then that means the device is powered off. If you can boot it to the dual core screen then we can help.

I get no response from the XOOM. The display does not turn on at all. No dual core, no nothing.
If dual core came up i'd adb the thing easily into life.....but..no go.
You said you held volume up, down and power and got nothing.

I had a similar problem and disconnecting the battery for a bit worked like a charm, I bought my torx set from walgreens for 5 bucks (comes with many different bits) also any hardware store will carry a small set, you will only need to unscrew 4 screws and move 2 clips up, 2 screws on the bottom and 2 screws on the battery connector. I slipped a piece of paper in between the battery connector and the xoom board waited about 30 seconds removed the paper and screwed it back together and it turned on just fine. the whole process should take about 5 minutes at most. Ifixit.com has a great teardown of the xoom trust me in the end it will be worth it.

I'm having almost the exact same problem with my WiFi Xoom. I went to restart it yesterday and it turned off and will not turn back on. When I plug it in to one of my docks, it shows fully charged (green light.) Powering on with the up volume does nothing (I held them both for 30 seconds.) I disassembled it last night and disconnected the battery for some time but it still will not power up. I plan to spend some more time on it this evening if possible.
The only other details about it is I'm rooted running Team EOS ICS 1.0.0 with the stock kernel provided with the ROM.

The only reaction I can get is that after holding Vol up+Power causes an orange light next to the front camera to blink twice. That's it.
Any suggestions? Is it completly dead?

You may not need to remove the battery as several people have reported success with just slipping some paper between the contacts for 30+ seconds. You will need to open it up though and here's a post with info and pictures to guide you through that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1578365

Well, I did the paper under the battery terminals for 15 minutes and still no joy.
One item of note is that when I plug the charger in, I'm not getting a white (or green) light. At least not much of the time. Occasionally, I can wiggle the plug a bit and it will light up, but I'm not getting to green at all.
I can put a multimeter on the battery leads, does anyone know how many volts/amps I should be reading?
Are we sure that its not just a crap connection with the charging plug. It is a wimpy little pin and my Xoom needs me to do a rain dance to get it to charge. I have to plug it in, wait a few seconds and then the white light comes on , but only if the wire is flipped back over the top of the screen. Another thought is I use Tiamat ics and there is an option to have the light on or off during charge and I think it is set to off as default, maybe you didn't set that up. I would bet its something stupid and you just need to keep playing with the wire and see if you can get it on. Good luck.

[Q] Black screen after FW Upgrade, only vibrates.

Hello!
I just received my Infinity and started working on it, since there was a new Firmware available I downloaded and installed it.
When done it said "shutting down" and turned the Infinity off.
And this is were the trouble began .. since the last few hours I am trying to get it to work again but nothing seems to work.
Pressing the reset button with a paperclick won't work.
Volume down + Power only lets the Tablet vibrate after 10-12 seconds
Pressing power for 20 seconds (ASUS suggested this..) does the same thing.
with/without A/C Charger or docking station same thing, I get absolutely nothing on the screen.
When plugging it in via USB I get the APX mode.
Is there anything I can do at all? I don't want to send it back of course and thought APX Mode will maybe help me install and / fix something "blind" since I think the issue might be related to the Firmware upgrade..

I did try the button combinations, and for NVFlash it says: THIS REQUIRES A NON-BRICKED AND UNLOCKED DEVICE. IT WON'T WORK ON ALREADY BRICKED DEVICES
Well.. I think mine already could be bricked, and I can't unlock it by installing the apk
If pressing Volume Down +Power only give you a black screen and not even the Asus logo it means you are bricked (could also be a hw failure, who knows) ... APX mode is useless for your device. So if u can't manage to boot into recovery or in fastboot mode i would recommend you to start the RMA process.

A few Things you can still try to recover the Infinty
Dude, that absolutely SUCKS! I would be so disappointed / angry if I were in your position, especially having the tablet for a short time. It DOES sound like a hardware failure (video seems out, but it's almost as if the tablet is running dark, and you just have no video. Can you return it to the retailer you bought it from? That would be 1000% better than an RMA, which is another thing that Asus does extremely poorly (They use a 3rd Part servive out of Grapevine Texas, and in MOST cases it is a nightmare. I don't understand why you can't bring/send it back to the point of purchase. You are not requesting arefund, just exchange for defective tblet.
As a last resort, do this: RUN THE BATTERY FULLY DOWN. Do not put the charge on, and keep checking if the tablet is powered on (touch the power button quickly, like you are taking it out of sleep mode. This could take the better part of a full day/night, but if you run it until the battery fully discharges, I remember a Prime user that this saved the day. It certainly is worth the effort, considering the alternatives.
Once it fully runs down, plug in the charger, and it should power up / begin charging and you will know in two seconds if it worked cause that Asus Logo will be the greatest site you will have seen in some time.
Oh, and something you can try before beginning that long process: I know you have already tried most reset methods, but humor me and put a pin in the reset hole - by HDMI, but instead of just pressing it briefly, press and hold for a FULL 30 + seconds. Some swear this changes the parameters, thiugh I am doubrtfull. More significant was mention that while holding the microswitch in, there is a "draining" happening of the memory onboard. I half belive it because years ago, I had an old HP Jornada Pocket PC, and one of the recovery procedures was remove the backup battery, and wait some inutes for a drain of memory to occur. You could SEE the LCD fading, like losing contrast super slowly. When it went completely blank was whenI was instructed to re-power up.
So try the reset pinhole for 30+ seconds
failing that, try a full battery drain
failing that try to return to point of sale
failing that do a shudder RMA with Asus. (Reach out to Gary Key - his PM and Email are listed in these forums. That way at least you will have a point of contact, and he may provide you with others. Good luck I feel for ya, especially with JB almost upon us! :cyclops:

Your are not the only one, afaik other users bricked their devices just by updaing with official firmware.However i'm a bit confused about that "shutting down" message and iirc the device only does a "restart" when updating,it doesn't shutdown.

I won't do it via ASUS, they told me to but hell no.
Bought it from Amazon and already contacted them, I'll send it back when I get the confirmation they won't do an ASUS RMA, if they do want I just get my money back and buy a new one lol. Either way it is faster than Asus..

Put it in APX mode and it will drain your battery.Btw are you sure the battery was charged enough when you updated?

I will try to find the thread - but check in the Prime threads - search for screen black, no video etc. The guy(s) that did it said that they just kept turning it on.. or touching the power switch - I know that's not too detailed. Here's the thing: a vibrate is what the tablet does NORMALLY when powering up... I think your may be running, you just can't see it. The only clues you can get are from the LED in the power button. Green means something like 95% charged. Amber means less that 14% and blinking amber (with no power supply attached means it is within the last few percent - Those are ballpark figures, you can find the full LED color descriptions with a bit of searching. Anyway it is you only indicator so, finding out waht the colors mean might help you in the discharging process.

EDIT: JUST NOTICED you said this is from Amazon. If that's the case, you have no worries. Amazon replaces items faster/better than any other retailer. In fact Amazon will cross ship you a new one and you can return this after receiving the new one - at least that's how they did it with my TF101... two times. On the third exchange, they try to refund you and make you purchase it again, but I complained that it was not the SAME problem each time (this was on the docks) and they went ahead and sent me a 3rd one. Just go ahead and do that. You probably would be better off with a different one, but check it CAREFULLY for defects. I am convinced that these are near impossible for Asus to build without screwing up something - Screen separation (viewed from the edge), scratches, poor cutout/application of the Logo (My daughter actually bled from a cut it gave he -sharp edges) and the INFAMOUS Loose Screen, "Clicking" sound - squeeze the tablet gently all the way around. if it clicks or makes any grinding noises return it. For $500 any defect is unacceptable. Good luck!

Thing is, even when it vibrates the LED is always off, only when I plug it in for charging it turns orange.
I will try the APX method Just plug it in to the PC and when the "can't find driver" message pops up it's in APX? Or do I have to install the drivers first?

You don't need the PC at all, just put it in APX mode and let it be. The led turns on only when you plug the charger.
Edit: btw, you will know if it's in APX mode because even if the screen is off the device will get warm.

Oh ok, since the only thing it does is vibrate I don't know if it is in APX Mode .. and it vibrates not after 5 seconds even when I press the volume up, but after ~10 seconds

Maybe that is why they pushed the release back. Because they found it was bricking devices, lol. That sucks, tho, man. Good thing you bought it recently enough to send it back with Amazon. I wouldn't even bother with anything else and just sent it back.
Maybe....you could see what's going on if you connected it to the TV/Monitor on the HDMI port....

Ok another trick and it involves some luck. IF its on and you power it off you get a very,very short vibration (it's hard to feel it sometimes) and then you normally see a confirmation box appear in the middle of the screen asking you "Would you like to shut down?". Then you either tap Cancel or OK. Using your "minds eye" try to imagine where that box is on that black screen and tap it where you would to answer the question "OK". If you have any luck the damn thing will shut off and in ~8 seconds you'll feel a longer vibration indicating it turned off. Then DO NOT turn it on. Instead plug in the power adapter and let it power on and see if that puts your video back up.
I'm just wondering if the cable to the screen inside has popped off the main board. I know i've read about that happening but it usually occurs after a pretty good jolt to the unit.

[Q] Tf300 dead after changing digitizer?

I got my tf300 some time ago, and just today i recieved all the components needed in order to change it;note that the tablet was disasembled for more than a month, but before that, the battery was charged, so it remained like a month like that as well i don't have best memory of the disasembly proceedure.
So today, i managed to pack it back (without putting the back cover of the tablet, and tried to boot it, but nothing happened.So i put it on the charger where a sound (charging sound) beeped and a red led turned on (later green).I let the tablet charging for more than half an hour, and tried to boot it again but no sign of life at all.I removed all the screws etc and disassembled it for one more time in order to check if everything was put right.
Both digitizer cables was secured.
Screen cable was fine.
Also i tried to check the on and volume rockers cable and by mistake i ruined the plastic top of the female adaptor, but the cable still fits fine inside (that happened during the second disassebly so it was not the original cause for sure).
Also, i noticed that there is an on/off switch next to the power button.This switch was ON the whole time.
I found a button at the digitizer circuit and pressed it (tablet off).
I've tried to remove the digitizer and try to boot.Nothing happened.
What i am afraid of, is that the whole proceedure make me burn some circuit of the tablet by static electricity or by sort-circuit something by my slightly swetty hands.

Uhh, the on/off button should be always on ON if you are turning on the tablet, always have it like that...
Also, make sure that the digitizer's end is well plugged

If you're referring to the reset button on the Touchscreen pcb, that usually does not turn anything off, just resets to boot the tab again. In any case, you said "tablet off", meaning it was "on" before that? How do you tell it was on then? One way to find out would be to hook it up to a tv via HDMI. If it comes on, either the lcd or the cable is the problem. I've run into a situation where the tab works (comm. thru PC) but the graphics part is dead, hence no display, in which case the only solution would be a new motherboard as graphics reside within the CPU.
I mean it was turned off before i press the button.I will try to find a cable in order to check it on TV, but if hte GPU is dead how the HDMI works?By the way,i just tried to plug the tablet to my PC, and the PC recognize the device!That probably means that the device is on,but something goes wrong with the display.

If the GPU is dead then of course there won't be any display. But how do you find out? With the HDMI connection.

Xoom locked up completely

Hi
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
Basically my xoom seems to be suffering from a problem that quite a few people seem to have had. It locked itself one day when it hadn't been used for a couple of minutes and that was it. Tried the holding of power button + up put it on charge and left it with the green light on for 3 hours still nothing.
tried disconnecting the battery and left it disconnected for a day to see if that worked- Nope
tried a new battery - nope
Tried new top part of case with power switch and volume buttons - nothing
As a last resort I bought a factory reset cable - plugged in and plugged into charger as well and after holding the vol up+down for 20 seconds and then holding the power with them it suddenly sprang to life.............
Now its working fine while all plugged in but the moment I pull the usb cable out its off.
So is this pointing to the battery? ( I have replaced it but its not a Motorola original)
Could it be a charging problem, Although its showing as charging (I haven't pulled the cable yet when fully charged as its still charging but it was at 61%)
or is this something else.

lol I spent so much time trying to make sure I remembered everything tried that I forgot the basc info
Its a mz604 wifi only UK xoom

OK, I may have had some success!
I managed to get it booted up again on the cable and did a battery re-calibration. Pulled the cable out and it powered off again straight away but.................... When I pressed the power button it has booted up and seems to be running fine again.
I'm going to run the battery fully down and then see what happens after a charge so fingers crossed may be good news.

The battery re-calibration is only an Android OS issue, and shouldnt be doing anything like this. It gets reset every time you unplug your device from being fully charged.
This almost sounds like a defective battery or a loose battery connection inside. Its possible that unplugging and plugging the battery back in fixed the issue.
