Unrooted tethering - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 60+ year old friend who no longer has Internet, but uses her galaxy 10. She has a laptop she would like to tether to her galaxy.
She does not want to have her device rooted, so what are my options in helping her?
Thank you

Foxfi(may have been renamed to pdanet+) on the phone, and Pdanet on the laptop. Just be careful, some people have had their data throttled or they have been dropped by their carrier for circumventing the tethering fee. I only mention this because you state that it will be her main source for the internet.

Thanks. I'll mention it to her.

I've had luck with tethering to my laptop and not getting heat from my carrier. However, I'm running. Chrome OS from an SD card when i do it. Both AT&T and T-Mob have sent me warnings on a Windows and Mac computer. Just a suggestion on bypassing that hassle w/o doing a major overhaul on an operating system.

If she has an N8000 i.e., the 3G (International) model, all she needs is "directions"
Settings->Wireless and Network->More Settings->Tethering and Portable Hotspot

Mobile providers often have provisions added to their device's OS that inhibit tethering via the built in method, which will need root to freeze/delete said provision. Hate to be the bummer, but that's the breaks. Our goal here is sans root, so the PDA net/ foxfi route may be their best bet.

Yes, but the only N8000 variant that does this is the Verizon Note 10.1.

I'm aware. But the fact still remains, the built in tethering option is usually blocked by the mobile carrier(Mobile or tablet, still android. OS). When i had my Fascinate, tethering was out of the question w/o root.
Of the question unless i gained root a be flashed a different ROM,

We're talking specifically about the 3G Note 10.1; if its not the VZ model, there's no "carrier" to get in the way. They usually don't screw with OS features outside the US.

Edit

Afronicus said:
Right... Which leads me, again, to my point: a mobile carrier ( Verizon in the states ) may (will) block the built in tethering capabilities of the OS. Doesn't matter who is the carrier for your data on your tablet, they'll want to collect on your unsanctioned tethering. Your wi-fi tablets will not have the ability to function as a hot spot. You've either got a 3g tablet(which could tether ) or wi-fi tablet. Get what I'm saying? Is not about model (is irrelevant overall, you'd know if your tablet had mobile data or not.) but about the capability of tethering that I'm writing about.
But more importantly, have you (OP) been able to help your friend?

She's been hesitant to mess with her "contract", so we've not tried anything.
Thank you for all of the suggestions

tethering hack for android

I was wondering if anyone has come up with a hack to tether android phones for free. Or maybe hacked androids mobile wifi app to be free
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
This has been around sense the beginning of Android.
Thanks, i hope it works for my inspire
When I saw the header for this I was hoping it would help me tether my next book via wifi to my cell phone ( a HTC TOUCH PRO 2) . Not this though, does anybody know what hack I can use to get my nextbook to recognize the wifi router from my cell phone?
I would use it if i could figure out how to root my phone

What am I missing?
I have a new Inspire / ATT (I am new to Android; previous was Tilt2 with WM6.5, heavily modified). Wifi hot spot came built in and I have used it to connect my notebook to the internet.
What I thought this was about was an Android equivalent to WMWIFI, which allowed one to do the hot spot thing but ATT could not detect the phone was tethered, I looked for that because I was grandfathered with ATT and would be able to have unlimited data for $30 a month. But I could not find this function for Android, so had to go with a tethered plan for $45 (all data inclusive) and limited to 4GB a month. If I could do the equivalent of tether without a tethered account, then I could stream video, etc, unlimited.
But this app looks to me to just be an implementation of the stock tethering. Or am I misunderstanding it?

Your misunderstood. This app is undetectable by carriers, in my case sprint, and allows tethering without paying per month for it. All you need is a data package and rooted.

I'm within my 30 days. I wonder if I can drop the extra $15 for tethering, and also go back to my grandfathered unlimited data. Thanks for the explanation.
Now I need to figure out the rooting process. My Tilt2 was heavily modified (using ROMs and phones by others), but the process was the same for all. Now it appears that every phone seems to have a different root process and I can't find it for the Inspire.
Another Question Though
Would this also allow me to download video, streaming it to the phone, without ATT knowing it, or is it just for hot spotting?

Streaming it to the phone? What do you mean? The WiFi tether does exactly what it says: WiFi tethering. So yea you can download videos and netflix with your computer.
I don't have an inspire but I believe if your connected via your WiFi router you can stream videos from your computer to your phone. I've never tried though.

The nexus s comes preloaded with tethering, this isnt limited by your carrier as the nexus s has no restrictions on this per agreement with tmobile or as an unlocked edition thru best buy, wife has a nexus s and no tethering package added on and it works fine, open up your setting and select wireless & networks then scroll down to tethering and portable hotspots
My laptop has had this issue before i got an android phone. I had wm phone. Im still trying to find out why.

IDK about a hack for recognition but I do use EasyTetherPro.apk on unrooted device and I have more than tripped my tether usage allotment ....Still going. It's got a setup for tablets too, though I've never tested anything besides USB tethering and the app is legit there ..so.....Maybe give that a try...Its 10$ ($9.99) but to bypass my 8gb limit =priceless
HTC Touch Pro 2 is Windows Mobile... and that post is 6 years old.

[Q] Tethering question? (detection)

So my friend has an atrix 2, I rooted his phone, and hes been using wifi tether.
Carrier has detected it, and I have advised him to stop tethering.
So my questions is simply, how can he tether AND avoid being detected?
I've heard goodthings about ClockworkMod Tether during my research.
I also saw the post about modifying a file to enable built in wifi hotspot.
And when I tether I use the built in one from CM7.
Have I just been lucky? or would using cm7 prevent his problem?
and ClockworkMod Tether, the posts I read were from jan, is it still considered undetected since it "uses a proxy instead of an NAT/masquerade solution to avoid carrier detection."?

What method did you use for your friend?
I used sqlite editor and just disabled the entitlement check.
The only thing AT&T sees is a *jump* in my data.
No problems as of yet.

The issue is when you tether from windows using ie.... They (at&t) look at the network payload.
When I tether I use chrome or firefox. Also have it emulate linux, if you can in the debug menu. Those things will help, but technically they can still tell, and they can get you.
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
I was tethering an android tablet (Viewsonic GTablet) to an android phone (Atrix2). And while it took 4 months for AT&T to catch on they were able to tell that data was not terminating on the phone. According to the tech I was talking to they could tell that data was taking an additional hop after the phone. I was arguing that i didn't tethering and asked what was being tethered to the phone. They couldn't tell me what the end device was or what the payload was but they did know data wasn't terminating on the phone.
So unless you can write a program/script that adds back the number of extra hops in each TTL header in IPv4 or hop limit in IPv6, AT&T will be able to tell you are tethering.

[Q] simple mobile hotspot

I've searched up and down and all around simple mobile's website for the answer to the question:
Does simple mobile allow you to use a android phone with a simple mobile sim card as a HotSpot for other computer(s)?
Is it legal?
thanks!
one extra question:
Is it ok to connect a galaxy s 4g with simple mobile to a VPN service (that is normally only for android) and then get a wifi connection to a computer so the computer can use the vpn as well?
I hope its legal I do it everyday
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda app-developers app
How could be illegal? If you try to do hotspot then it works its not illegal, if it doesn't then they don't allow you to.
There's nothing illegal about mobile hotspot unless stated. The network carrier can simply block it instead of making it "illegal".

Can you clarify this statement? You got me confused in this part "(that is normally only for android)".
"Legal," most likely yes. It violates no law that I have am aware of.
In violation of your contract? That is a different question. You'll have to read it.

Might Be Okay...
Well, I'm using my phone as a mobile hotspot right now just as a backup while my Wi-Fi connection is down. I have Simple Mobile too, but I'm using a rooted HTC HD2 for that. I think it's legal, but watch out if you're using like 2GB or more in a short period of time. I just got a message saying they could have me suspended for breaking terms of service. They never mentioned anything about mobile hotspots, but I'm guessing it's because I've used about 3GB in the last three weeks and I have yet to fix my Wi-Fi connection.

Anyone using tethering?

Read that someone got the 15 dollar charge added for mobile ap, but has anyone been able to usb tether without issues? I'm on a custom Rom, but was looking at the built in tether support

May be useless for you, but tethering (through USB and WiFi) works just fine here in Russia. No additional charges, of course.
Well I'm glad to know it works on the sk, but I guess I was wondering more about how T-Mobile likes it. If anyone knows that, maybe they can let me know

Hey there Shadowscott, i have been using the tethering and mobile access point feature of my sidekick for a long while and i can say that T-Mobile does not seem to have any issues with it. Keep in mind that i am using it on an unlimited data plan and it may act differently on a different plan.
I have always used Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether without any problems. It even works on the 200 MB data plan! :good:
Just use any root tether app, and you will be fine, unless you do it like my buddy that's on my account and use up 30gb. So far we just got a warning but i think he started using the stock app by accident.
I have a work-around for the native tethering app. But it requires apktools, smali editing.
Using KD1, and in the middle of a two-year stay in Greece, I'm able to connect with stock tether app and Greece's Cosmote phone service (even tethering to a Windows CE device).
Also, for anybody traveling with an unlocked Sidekick 4G, your US phone can get 3G in Europe. That's because the German TMobile uses both Band I and IV within its 2100 channel. TMobile's HTC Touch Pro2 also gets 3G, along with other higher-end TMobile phones.

Hey there!
I use USB tethering on my sidekick, and the problem is that they WANT you to pay the 15 dollars to pay for tethering. They can't just charge you for the service, that's illegal. At any rate, the way around this (sometimes t-mobile, for example, won't allow you to USB tether, and will cut off your tethering) is to use Google Chrome. You can download an add-on in their market-- search "User agent" and I currently use the "Ultimate User Agent Switcher, URL Sniffer", which is a red circle, with two arrows wrapping around each other. You then set your setting to Android 2.3, and now your laptop registers as your phone to your phone company. You will be 'mobile browsing' technically, you just have to make sure to click 'desktop' options when available on websites.
Note: This method is legal, as I was given it from a T-mobile representative, so please don't think this is some underhanded method for 'stealing'.

hotspot

I'm using cm10 and whatever the latest version of 4.1.2, any suggestions for what apps work or are good for making my phone a hotspot, tethered or untethered?
Barnacle and Wifi-tethering are both free and work. But T-Mo detects both of them, unlike the built-in tethering... when it's working.

So T-Mo has a problem with that?
If you aren't paying for it. Since it's an additional add-on service that will normally run you 5-10$ or more a month... depending on how much data you're planning on running through it. But tethered data is considered officially different from your unlimited data.
Is there a way to get passed Tmo from noticing?

ICS tethering. Or GB tethering. Or actually pay for it. Or check if one of the other programs besides those 2 works.

Yes, unless TMO has recently changed their detection methods, they were relying on the User Agent String to determine if you were tethering. That said, just spoof the string using a browser like Chrome and an Agent Switcher App for it here: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user-agent-switcher/lkmofgnohbedopheiphabfhfjgkhfcgf?hl=en
Change your agent to "Android Handset" on the browser on the computer you are going to connect with, and you should be home free. I know this used to work just fine with FoxFi and other Apps. It is the Agent String that TMO was flagging, which then shortly resulting in a nastygram text message. I am on 4.0.4 AOKP and just did this the other weekend at the Hospital we were at because somehow their free WiFi IP had been blacklisted from about every website I tried to access. Tethering was the only way I could get out short of using Hotspot Shield VPN
