AT&T Service Center - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hello guys. I tried to search the forum for acceptable answers to my question but couldn't find it. I have the dreaded dead screen problem with my One X. The phone still operates and I can even answer calls but it's completely black. Can't even get to the bootloader screen. I contacted AT&T and since it's within 12 months they're sending me to a Service Center. Will they even be able to diagnose the problem (mainly see that I'm rooted, S-off, and unlocked) or just replace the thing? It has no cosmetic damage whatsoever. I can't flash back to stock since I have no idea what's happening on the phone!
I'm thinking (hoping) they will just replace it.

I haven't really heard of this problem (black screen), at least not as a more "common" issue. So the screen does not turn on at all, but still responds to touches? Could actually be a hardware failure.
AT&T doesn't give a poo whether its bootloader unlocked, running a custom ROM, etc. They will just give you a refurb.

Yeah the only reason I'd said that is because I found a lot of threads about it from a few months ago. It's apparently an issue with the tegra chip overheating and shifting location. The screen won't turn on but I still get notifications, calls, and can "unlock" the phone (still no visual though).
Only thing I was worried about was AT&T caring but I'm good with a refurb as long as they don't hassle me about the phone's state.
Thanks!

These phones don't have the Tegra chip. That's the One X International.

I returned mine and got a refurb. I flashed the AT&T RUU beforehand but still had S-OFF and even a custom bootsplash and they took it right back and gave me a replacement.

Can't you RUU without seeing the phone's screen? Pretty sure nothing needs to be viewed on the screen to do that. Since you are S-off, its safe to run the 3.18 RUU.
If you RUU and still a black screen, my gut would say its a hardware issue. As already mentioned, we don't have the Tegra chipset (our is Snapdragon S4). But it can be something with the GPU, the screen has gone bad, a bad connection somewhere, or other hardware issue.

I had the same problem and yes, its a hardware issue. I went to a service center and they replaced it no problem. I was rooted, boot unlocked, the whole deal.

Sorry meant the snapdragon. Either way it was definitely a hardware issue.

Does rooting get rid of the touch screen issue?

Quick question.. I know most of us are being plagued by the annoying touch screen issues.. so my question is:
Users that are using root/custom firmware.. are you still experiencing these issues? This will be the deciding factor in whether or not I root this phone seeing as there's not any release dates for any software updates.
I bought the S4G on July 9th. For the first week or so, I had a problem with the touchscreen where dragging the unlock ring up would rather bring an icon up. It would take 3-4 tries before the phone would really pull up the unlock ring.
After the first week, the problem went away for me. I have been S-OFF since the first of August with perm root and the problem still hasn't come back. Not sure if this is the same issue as you, but the problem seemed to fix itself.
What exactly is S-OFF? And what does it do for you?

My phone used to that at one point and it drove me crazy! Since then I did the whole rooting thing, flashed Civic's back2basic rom and I've haven't had any problems since. It's running super smooth. Did two other sensations with no problems, lag or reboots yet

Not sure if my problem is the same. On my Sensation, when my screen is turned on, it's not responsive in all places for the first 6 to 7 seconds. After 10 secs or so, it's working flawlessly. It's especially annoying when answerring or cancelling a phone call.
Do you think rooting and S-off would help this issue? I'm now on OTA 2.3.4
S-OFF, ROOT, custom rom etc. does NOT fix touch screen issue. That's what you were asking about, right?
OK, thanks for clearing that out.
The thing is, that I only have this issue after getting the phone back from repair (shattered glass). The repair guy couldn't find anything that could cause this issue. But due to the repair this touch screen vulnerability was triggered. Can't go back to HTC now, due to the repair. So I'm stuck for now.

If you haven't come across it yet, give this thread a read.
It does not. I used the Touchscreen Booster from the market. Works fine.
Rooting helps you to control your phone. You can try different roms and see if the problem goes.
Rooting doesn't but flashing a 2.3.4 ROM will solve ur issues more than likely. I'm using LeeDroid and its great no lag no dead spots.

Looks like it's another one. I am beginning to think this problem is related to some of the firmwares we use since it's happening with different ROMs.
You can try the various things people tell you to do....but if it's unresponsive completely..even if you plug to computer...then so far..no one has really provided a solution or reason for it.
You can see multiple post about it. Happened with mine too...running and then stuck after a long constant tone...then it never turned on again.
If your still under factorywarranty which you should be. Call HTC say phone won't turn on pay shipping fee and they will send you a new or refurbished phone either way it's better than no phone.

I don't think so...
the bootloader unlocking (as htc wrote) void the software warranty
so, if is hardware related you are lucky, they will repair it
try to bring it to htc and say that you did nothing, it just shut down...don't say that you unlocked it or anything like...maybe they will just give you a new one, they can't check if you did something to the phone

Unlocking your bootloader voids your warranty, no matter how you unlocked it, but you have. If HTC gets the phone to power on, no doubt they will check the bootloader status. If they find you've unlocked the bootloader, they will charge you for the repair and damage fees, including the shipping cost.
It depends where you send your phone, if it's a hardware fault they might not charge you, but as I said it all depends on the Service Center.

I don't know....no one seems to know for sure if it's hardware or software. Some suggested it must be hardware if it's not turning on at all. Yours gets hot when you put battery in? Even it doesn't turn on?
I got the same issue, I tried to reboot into recovery to install opensensation but then it didnt boot and no led if I connect it to the charger ... nothing
the only thing is that lsusb gives me this:

any updates?

Major problems with One S

Just bought a One S and it's giving me major battery and overheating problems.
Over the first few days, I've just had just ridiculous battery life drain. I saw that the phone was "awake" a lot while I had the screen off so it was probably an app that was causing a wakelock issue. I did a restore using the hardware buttons from powered-off method and didn't install any apps (except the swift key beta) with only 1 email account syncing. Today at work, I used it minimally (maybe 30 texts?) and it was at 48% at the end of the day. Not great, but manageable. Tonight after 30 minutes of surfing the net, I've killed another 30% and my phone got so hot to the touch that I couldn't even hold it. 30% of drain over 30 minutes of usage is just horrible. What am I doing wrong? Is this normal, or did I just get a dud?
Edit: And I didn't post under the other threads because my case is just an extreme. When I'm talking about extreme heat, the back of the phone must've been at least 80 degrees celcius. And with that kind of battery drain, I wouldn't even get 2 hours of use.
Seriously, take it in for service. That is a defect.

Unfortunately, I picked this up used, I don't think I'll have the ability to bring it in for repairs. Is there anything software related that I can do? Is there a way to reflash the kernel? I think it might be linked to a bad software install. Wakelock is usually software related, not hardware.

Call HTC, it should have a one year warranty. I'm curious about the warranty, since I purchased mine used too. If you bought it on eBay or through PayPal, you should immediately contact the seller and open a case if they don't respond.

I was flashed to metropcs, they didnt care, they restore it to stock, and replaced a few parts,
all i did was send them my ebay papers that i bought it.... they honored the 1 year policy..
So there's no way to do a full restore of the phone? Like from the computer. I wanna try all the software fixes I can before I send it in to HTC.
In that case you will need to run the correct RUU matching your carrier, it will restore everything. Try a full reset through settings before this though, see if that works first.
Heres a list of RUU's

If someone flashed a bad Rom (bad downloaded version) that can happen, I've had a good Rom not settle correctly and cause over heating. Flash something different.

6th replacement device. Got AT&T to send me a GS3

I cant believe I went through 6 devices.
The first 4 had the same problem. Old text messages would send themselves to the last 2 people I texted, at random. 4 in the afternoon or 3 in the morning. I was annoying my friends all the time. 5th device came with damage (stuck power button would turn the phone off by itself)
Last device, the one im using now is stuck in landscape for no apparent reason. Dock mode is on and I cant turn it off. Something is making my phone think its on. Called AT&T, complained, told them about how many devices ive been through. Initially got denied, asked to speak to a manager. Got denied again, they offered a year-early upgrade for no charge, but I denied that. After about 30 minutes of back and forth, they decied to send me a blue GS3 that should be here this week
The phone has been good to me when it worked, but Im tired of getting replacements.
Lol, I bet you have problems with the gs3 too.

Aside from the stuck power button (which is just a hardware problem)... maybe it's a bugged program (or virus attachment) that you keep installing on your new devices? What happens if you DON'T install your usual programs on your latest device? Try it out for a week, and then you can start to pinpoint the rogue application. Don't use your phone to connect to any email either, and then you can narrow down if it's an application or data problem.

Exactly. The problem the first four "phones" had was almost undoubtedly NOT a hardware problem, and I'm amazed and dismayed that you got them to replace your phone (dismayed because that cost gets passed on to everyone else, AND the more people do this the less likely people with legitimate problems are going to get their problems addressed... boy cries wolf syndrome, if you will)
When my GS II was randomly shutting down they made me try a phone with NO apps installed other than what came pre-installed, for a week to eliminate app issues. And because I was desperate, I did.
I have had the text issue when texting people on T-Mobile. Only certain people on T-Mobile. Theirs would come to me several times, or mine would go to them duplicated or delayed and they would get like 5 at once. Never did figure out the cause, it just stopped on its own. This was a few years ago, though. In this case I would expect some app on your phone. The XDA does this thing that if I post an image on the forum, like an hour later I get a toast that my reply was successful, and find it duplicated my post.

I'm currently on my 4th One X replacement device. The first three replacements and the original had screen flex issues along the side, and in the middle. One of the replacements had a faulty power button. They offered a make/model change for free, and that meant instead of continually sending the White One X, they sent the Grey. It was either that, or DOWNGRADE to a cheaper phone.
Needless to say... The 4th one still has these issues. But I'm tired of dealing with AT&T because it really hasn't been resolved. I could keep complaining, and eventually if it gets worse I will.

or, if you only want to hit one place, google the nearest att Device Support Center. if it isn't too far of a drive, i can't imagine they'll ever turn anyone away. their primary function is to fix or replace your phone (if it's within the 1 yr mfr warranty). no receipt needed... they'll bring up your account. (don't give them a device that's been visibly tampered -- revert back to stock, etc)

You can't exchange for a new phone in-store beyond the first 30 days. After that, you go through warranty and its all refurbs. As previously mentioned, you can go to that a Device Support Center, but they will still be refurbs, but at least you can test them out before leaving the place.
Multiple defective refurbs are common, and even the same issue. But the 4 in a row with the exact same text issue is odd, if not suspicious. Are you migrating any backed up data like SMS? Might even be a network related problem.
Ironic user name is ironic.
I have never had issues with this phone.. something is up..

[Q] Dead horizontal band

Seems like the international HOX section has quite a few threads about horizontal dead bands on the screen, just above the keyboard. Frankly, it was driving me nuts!
Before I hit my local AT&T store to try to get a replacement, I wanted to check if anyone else is having a similar experience with the One XL. Am I correct in thinking this is a hardware problem?
never heard of it being a software problem. If you enter bootloader screen and still have it then it should rule out ROM or kernel fault. So maybe it's hardware

Does anyone know how to save a screen cap of the line test? Seems like the volume-/power button doesn't do anything.
