Anyone going caseless? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Hate cases on a nice phone, but worried due to reports of the lcd cracking in pockets.
Anyone having luck without a case?

Broke my first 1 caseless within days, i got a clear TPU case that is VERY slim and does not take away from the phone much at all, I also added the Spigen glass.t screen protector

I'm caseless and I work in construction. I put it in a Ziploc bag to keep the debris out and I'm good to go.

I just pay for blacktie through best buy and go case less and don't have to worry about it breaking

The phone is too slippery for me without a case. I got a Ringke Slim, a bit easier to hold and extremely thin. Only 7 bucks shipped, can't go wrong!

Caseless and Happy
I've had my GS4 caseless since I got it just over two weeks ago, it's still in great condition. I generally don't like using a case on my phones, (I never used a case on my GS2 before this one) as I don't like the look and bulk that it adds, no screen protector either, I'm still amazed by how well Gorilla glass resists scratching, the screen on my GS2 still looks brand new, despite never having a screen protector on it.

Case less all the way, with a screen protector..prob don't neet it but I'm anal like that. Oh and changed the back to a metal one. Gives the phone a "heavier" feel.

Naked with a ArmorSuit Miltary shield screen protector and Seidio spring-clip hoster.

I am thinking of getting the metal back too. they look cool and seem to add weight to the back so the phone might be more likely to fall on the back in the event of a drop.

Im caseless and screen protector less, my phone flung off my lap when i got outta the car the othet day, cartwheeled on asphalt and only left a nick in the bottom right of bezel. No cracks thank god..
I think i may have a few light scratches, may get one of those fancy glass screen protectors everyone's been raving about

Not I. I had my Galaxy S II caseless without a screen protector and it held pretty well... That thing was pretty solid.
I was watching all the drop tests, and seeing how easy Gorilla Glass III actually cracks; even seeing on here where it cracked in peoples pants??? Seeing that this is a bigger device, somewhat harder to hold in my hands, and definitely a lot more slippery than the SII, I do not want to take a chance on the $649.99 device. I also like leaving the device laying flat down on a surface(still getting used to air gestures, but the notification air gesture is cool); but one of the first things to touch the surface while laying flat is the camera lens which bothered me. I also have AT&T insurance but after seeing this case, it made my choice...
Spigen Neo Hybrid Case (Satin Silver)
edit* funny I had a dream last night that I actually cracked my S4. In the dream, it felt so real and that feeling of the cracked screen just really brings you down (sorry guys for the ones who did), but when I woke up, I was so relieved...

And your pants (no homo)
I think i wanna wait and see if mophie comes out with a juice pack for us.. If im adding bulk might as well add functionality too.. Besides protection

You guys crack me up. Spend hundreds for the phone and don't want to spend more than 7.00 on a case. Just Kidding
I prefer a leather pouch. Will get the Spigen one for 29.99. Has always done well for me and allows me to "use" phone with no case.
I am getting 2 32gb S4's tonight. My son still wants a case to use and keeps phone in pocket while at work. Does bending, stocking. Doesn't want case while using the phone, like me. But, doesn't want pouch. Is there a hard case that easily comes off then back on. Looked at many web sites and videos. Seems once they are on, they are not designed to be popping on and off--
OP: Based on my research, I would get some kinda case for the phone. I don't think this one will fair as well as my One S and Blackberries when dropped--

I roll caseless with my S4 and HTC One, both with Ghost Armor front and back.

If I get a case its going to be that exact one. It really is a nice looking case imo. does it add much bulk? doesnt look like it in the pics.
I sometimes dream about my phone too. makes me feel a bit obsessed lol.

I went caseless until I noticed the metal camera ring got all scratched up. Luckily I found a dead pixel on the display and was able to exchange it because of that.
With the premier discount on my account, I picked up the decent Case Mate clear case from the AT&T for 35% off. It works and the camera ring is still shiny with love.

Screen Protector?

Just wondering if you use one or not on the GS3. My first GS3 didn't have one on it, and it magically gained 3 large scratches in the screen (always was left in a pocket alone, nothing else). I had one on my 2nd GS3, but I am now on my 3rd (2nd one had dead pixels) and wondering if I should just rough it out without one, or get one again.
Also if you got one, where from, and how do you like it?
Thanks
I got one from my bro so i dont know what brand it is. But i can tell you it came in a pack of like 3 and it sucks. Rainbow affect ruins the screens potential. Look like its kinda snowy and the feel isnt nice

I'm using the SGP Ultra-Nano, and its awesome, comes with 3 in the package, I've used 1 so far, it does have light scratches on it now though, cost about $12 on amazon.
None here. A month in so far without issue *knock on wood*

After looking at this, I think I will buy some. Thanks for the recommendation!
Screen protectors are more trouble than their worth in almost all cases. If you manage to get it on without putting absolutely hideous bubbles on the screen, then you'll be left with something that just makes the screen "rainbowy" and terrible looking. Second skin doesn't do this but then it makes the screen rubbery and grippy feeling, not smooth like it should be. Protectors also seem to enhance fingerprints making them highly visible. Scratches? I wouldn't worry too much about that with gorilla glass 2 - http://youtu.be/wT8xI4PEU8c

I've used the SGP Ultra Nanos and don't like them. Within a month quite a lot had peeled away from the phone. I think this is going to be an issue with all thin film protectors that the industry seems to prefer with this model (slightly curved display surface).
I purchased an XGear Spectre and really like it. It's a tempered glass surface. Very easy to mount and hasn't peeled or scratched despite subjecting it to the same rigors as my previous SGP Ultra Nano. Nor do I expect it to peel in the future because it's pretty think (0.4 mm) and rigid. Apparently it's think enough that it doesn't fit all cases (I don't use a case). The field of view is essentially unaffected and the glass has excellent optics. At $35 with shipping, it's definitely more of than investment than thin film protectors, but I consider it a good value given the advantages.
I got the ones from samsung at the verizion store when i got my phone (the first day they had them or second)
The dude put on the first one for me and still looks great barley tell its there and its custom fit to phone
Price tag is 14 bucks but he gave it to me and it did go on very nicely no bubbles or discoloring
I don't use one, I'm just careful not to put anything in the same pocket that could scratch it
Same I use the one from the Verizon store 12 bucks, it didn't effect the viewing, it's a dry install and almost no bubbles when done, and you get 3.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
I put on 20 of the verizon ones everyday. Done correctly there are no bubbles, no lint and hold up well. Seeing all the hideous home jobs applications, the glossy texture of zags and the anti glare versions I can see why they get a bad rap.
I wouldn't go without one.

yeah, i've got a plain clear verizon one on mine.....actually it was the Cellet Screen Guard..just took it from my store. i put a million on a day, too, so i'm really good at it. i never ever get bubbles or dust. just gotta know how to do it!
also, you guys getting the grainy and rainbow effects, it's because you're using anti-glare protectors. they suck. the clear ones are better.

Otterbox - Commuter or Defender?

So I was in the store shopping for cases this evening and ran across the OB section. I haven't used an OB in years but thought I'd take a look. I ended up liking both the commuter and defender and was having a hard time deciding between the two.
Anyone else have this same issue, and if so what did you decide? I picked up the Commuter for no other reason than it seems to be well built and a bit less in the way. I also didn't really need the Defender's screen protector.
I would appreciate hearing opinions from anyone on these two cases.
Thanks in advance.

My wife has the defender and I have the commuter.
I don't like either but prefer the commuter over the defender. The defender really reminds me of a case you'd get if you have a filthy kid or are accident prone (like my wife)
Defender is huge. Commuter is less huge but still large compared to my spigen slim armor and neo hybrid. As for protection they all do well against drops and like I said the defender is good against filth and children.
sent from my GE gs4
Having tried both i prefer the commuter by far. one thing to note, the defenders "screen protector" is terrible and more of nuisance in my opinion. Size wise they are about the same outside dimensions with the defender being .1" wider and .1" taller. the feel in hand of the commuter and the defender were both really nice, i prefer the curved commuter case though. Really it all comes down to whether or not you need a belt clip because the both the cases should provide more than enough protection for 99% of people. I also got myself one of the Spigen Glas.t nanos and it is an amazing combo with the commuter case.
I personally like them both so I have both a black defender and white frost\grey commuter case

For me the screen protector is the killer, i would prefer to use my own tempered glass one. I had a defender on my s2 and plastic screen protector just didn't last (rendering it a through away) and collected dust under it. I did prefer the rubber outer case though compared to the commuters hardcase but it was a lint magnet. Overall I think the commuter does as good of a job as the defender with protection but with a little less bulk!
Yeah the only way id ever use a defender on this phone is if i was going to remove the **** plastic screen protector and just use my glas.t one. good case but the overall protection improvement over the commuter is pretty slim.
I use my Defender all week for work because I work in construction, weekends I use my commuter...yup yup!
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 2
I have a defender and agree with the others above; the screen protector is atrocious. I tried several methods to eliminate the "oil slick" effect but none lasted permanently. The feel isn't all that bad, IMO. Once I mar it up, I'll tear out the stock protector and install my own.

Same here. I had never even considered the defended cause of its size. Also because it was a pain to take off and put on each day. For years and years I've used a sandwich baggie.
So i got the grey and lime green defender and I must, it has certainly grown on me. I'm a painted by trade, so I deal with a ton of dust and debris, along with heights and paint of course. Now you can't argue with the fact that, even though you have any case covering your device, there is always that chance it csn suffer from a drop or whatever.
Just a week ago, I was working on a dormer on the top of a roof 2 storied high. So i listen to my podcasts all day long in work. So yep, took my phone out of my pocket to change PC, when it sort of got caught on the inner linking of my pocket, i reacted quickly but not quick enough. It fell and disconnected from my headset, and took the plummet 2 stories down right onto the pavement. My frikken heart sank. The first thing that came to my mind was that damn copay thru the insurance. To shorten this endless story, not o lt was there no damage to my device, but the case survived haha. Few scuff on the outer layer, but nothing too bad. I was simply amazed. Within the past few days, I ordered another, just to have. So im am very happy with the defender as you csn see
Sorry for such a long story lol

Paid 22 bucks for mine from amazon and trident has good customer service. Not to mention if you have to warranty it they dont ask you to take 4 pictures of it.

So many complaints about the screen protector on the defender... Now this holds true to just about every phone I put a defender on, I would pop out the screen protector. If I turn on the setting for high sensitivity for glove use. U don't even know the protector is there.
So... I had the commuter for all of 30 min. It felt cheap and lose on my phone. The plastic just didn't seem to mold with the rubber very well. I traded it for the defender and I haven't even looked at another case since. Yea.. Its not the best looking case and it does add substantial bulk, but I never take it off and o have no complaints with it.

It doesn't seem like it would loosen up under normal use. Only time will tell though. It would depend a lot on how many times the rubber outer is removed and reinstalled I imagine.

No apology necessary, it's great to hear the story. Thanks for all the opinions thus far. I haven't 100% decided yet, but y'all have given me a lot to think about, especially when spending $$ on a case.
Anyone else sick of Otterbox? I use to buy one at a min with a new phone but feels like the quality to design has gone down; no attention to detail, ignore the form factor of the thin phone, design oversights which lead to weaknesses in the case (Droid Razr Maxx Commuter has a thin piece that will break overtime, its just a matter of time). Just little stuff like this has me looking at other cases

Spigen products - hands down awesome all around

So I have been a big fan since my gs3 was purchased last year. Their screen protectors and cases were awesome. Now I'm on the gs4 and a little more than a year later I consistently refer to them for everything my phone needs. Perfect screen protection without a wet solution, dropped my phone the other day and case held up the phone just fine. I don't normally plug companies, but their product and shipping speeds have been awesome. Anyone got good or bad stories about them? Share!

I got the Neo Spigen Hybrid and it only lasted about 3 months. At the bottom where the microusb is connected the silver plastic cover broke off. I think it is partly my fault since I had to remove the case everytime I had to charge the phone since the stock cable crapped out and the new monoprice replacement cable didn't fit with the case installed.
Sh!ttiest customer service in the world.
Agreed.
I had a bad one...
I bought the Slim Armor View....
I didn't use the hinged cover until i HAD to cause my phone had no glass, just the exposed digitizer and screen ... I kept using it even after replacing the display and the hinge of the S-view part of the cover broke... I've kept using it and had a small plastic piece break off, from around the same hinge area...
I kinda regret the $45 I paid for it... But it IS a niiiiice looking case... It's got that going for it...

I'll completely agree with the screen protector. I love the clear screen protectors. They protect the phone, no color loss and fit really really well. But I can't say the same about the Neo Hybrid. I bought the case from amazon and less than 90 days later it broke. I contacted Spigen and they told me since I didn't order from their website, there isn't any warranty. In fact if you read on their site, they only have a 90 day warranty for any of their products and MUST be bought from their site. I really don't care about warranties on screen protectors because, well they're cheap and don't see much wear, but a case needs to withstand, well me and the Hybrid didn't. This isn't to say I'm rough on my phones, but I do take my phone out of the case from time to time and the edge bumper just didn't hold up. Not to mention the back of the case warped. Yes I'm sure it was an original Spigen case, checked the code it came with online and everything. I'm still using a Spigen screen protector, but I ended up getting a Trident Aegis. I know it isn't comparing apples to apples at this point, but the Aegis has a 1 year warranty and though adds bulk to the phone, I'm a big man and the phone feels better in my hand now. My most favorite feature about the case, DUST SHIELDS on the ports and the speaker. Stupid to get excited over i know but I hate dust in my phone lol.
yea they're great cases and all but it irritates me that the ports are all off
I stopped using my case because it was annoying to keep on taking the case off every time to plug in the AUX
Is there any problem with the Neo Hybrid having a sagging issue with it's soft rubber on the back? I know with my Galaxy Nexus, a few months in, the rubber began to sag due to the heat from the phone.

Yeah that's what I mean when I say "sag" actually. I guess "warped" out have been a better word for it, but there was a huge gap between the back of the phone and the rubber part after a few months. It use to be flush against it, but again, I assume the heat from the phone just messed it up.
Ugh, terrible to know that they still haven't fixed it.
I bought the red Spigen Slim Armor, it's amazing, looks flashy its really protective without sacrificing the slimness of the gs4, the only gripe I have about it is that the paint on the red plastic cover is kinda chipping off, maybe from me dropping it so much =/

The back is where mine sagged as well, right near the camera opening. Honestly, save your money and go with a different case. my i717 had a cheap $3 case which protected the edges and never ever sagged on the back.
Yeh unfortunately my neohybrid is exhibiting this sagging behavioural too just around the camera where i presume the cpu is
My Spigen Neo-Hybrid case for my GS4 broke a few weeks ago. The hard plastic frame just snapped in half at the thin sections where the USB plug goes. The phone was never dropped, and the case was in perfect shape, other than the break, of course.
I emailed Spigen, twice, and sent them pictures of the broken case, twice. They never even wrote me back. The case was originally bought directly from them (was def. not a knockoff), and they can't even write me back!!
I ended up replacing the case with a Neo-Hybrid knockoff from eBay, and it appears much more sturdy... and it was less than $20 delivered!!! I clearly shouldn't have switched to Spigen cases, with their fragile materials and pathetic customer support. Never again will I buy their overpriced garbage. Think twice before buying one unless you want to he shelling out more cash to replace it when it breaks.
I currently am using the slim armor case. Gives great protection while keeping the phone slim. Really like you can swap out the plastic to other colors if you buy them. Also held up to my first drop the other day with 100% success (thank god).

I never used a case before but this phone I really needed one on. All of my previous devices have had even, flat backs that sit nicely on a desk or table. Since most of my phone usage is browsing at my desk/table this is important for me. The Note 3 decided to have its camera all bumped out for no good reason which really irritates me because otherwise the phone is a nice rectangular shape. I need the case to flatten the back and make it nice again, I hate even the slightest wobble and I didn't want to scrape up the rim of the camera sitting it on a table. The Spigen Neo Hybrid is the case I bought because it has a nice flat plain look, a nice two-tone black/white color scheme (I have a white Note 3), and most importantly it makes the camera bump inwards rather than outwards, protecting it when sitting the phone down. It also adds a nice bit of weight and sturdiness to the phone.
That said, do I need a case for protection? No. I've never dropped or cracked a phone. I dropped my Axim x50v PDA into the grass 5 years ago walking to class and it had a bit of minor internal damage (still works) and ever since I'm very protective of my phones and tablets.
I loved the look and feel of this phone. So i went bare. And then I dropped it. Thankfully, screen was replaced under warranty.
I can always take the case off for periods and bask in its beauty, but for the most part, I want this phone to last me. So a case is required.

Much like CalcProgrammer, I usually forego a case for my phone...
But I felt that a phone this nice, especially, needed a case.
I got a thin hardback case with a kickstand.
The Poetic Invictus.
The stand is a must for hands free video watching on the Notes beautiful screen, and is definitely nice when playing emulators with a blue tooth controller!
The feel is natural and unobtrusive.
The side buttons are a little hard to click, but not a deal breaker.
So I'm pleased with it.
I couldn't sully a phone like this with a Otterbox. (Though it definitely deserves the security. )

So what do you think about s-view. Do you think it can protect our devices?
I hate cases... but i learned my lesson with my last phonne... the beautiful Sony Xperia S in white. One day i go out at night without the case to fully enjoy the look of the phonne... and it fell on ground... hard rock portuguese sidewalk. I got a very nasty damage in one corner! Now with my Note 3... case allways from first week! And i will not get any chance this time!
Putting a case to this phone is like ****ing beautiful girl with tick condom. Everybody can feel free to make his own choice but I would never sacrifice the feeling to hold it pure necked in my hands than putting this beauty in rubbish cases

I ****ed plenty of beautiful girls with condom on. ..... ultimately it was there for protection and I'm still healthy and without unwanted child ?... so it done is job lol. .. Just like my case when I dropped the phone from a few stairs up... my heart was in my mouth but it went back down to my chest when I picked the phone up in one piece ?

Cases and screen protectors in particular ruin the feel and beauty of the phone, mine's been used bare from day 1 and it's still mint :good:

I disagree. I just got a neo hybrid in gold and it looks AND feels terrific. Very pleased I am -
Mines have been naked since I got the phone, about 1 1/2 months. I love the way it looks and feels without a case. It's not "slippery" like my S3 was. You just have to be attentive to where you keep your phone. I never keep my phone on my thigh when I'm driving. I've learned the hard way when you forget and get out of the car. As long as your careful you should be fine. The back won't get scratched from everyday wear and tear because of the faux leather. The only thing that will show wear will be the silver trim around the phone. I have a few black marks from forcing it into my cup holder, which I no longer do. If anything, **** it, the deductible is only a $100 for insurance from Verizon. Pretty reasonable, I remember it being as much as $175 back in the day. It's still $175 for iphones.
I've never had any type of case or screen protector for any of my large phones, which includes Dell Streak, Note 1, and my Note 3. I put it in my back pocket when out and about, then set it down next to me when I sit down. Never dropped my phones. Ever.
When I had my s2 I had a slim case and screen protector the first few months but wasn't happy with the look and feel so I got rid of the protection cause it just looked and felt nicer naked 2 years later the phone is scuffed and scratched so this note 3 is staying 100% protected as much as possible. Got a red Spigen Neohybrid case and it looks absolutely stunning but makes it a bit more slippery to hold.
Guys look up some Note 3 torture test videos.
The only reason for a case on this indestructible behemoth is to add a kickstand and a higher coefficient of friction.

Who Rocks Their Nexus 4 Naked?

Just wanted to know how you guys feel about using cases, as apposed to no cases. Do you use your nexus 4 without a case? Without a case and screen protector? With a case? Do you think a case is necessary at the sacrifice of the premium feel in the hand? Discuss your thoughts below!

I've been using the ringke fusion case on mine from the day I bought the phone. I'm not crazy about cases for my phone and all my previous phones were used naked, but the N4 is far too fragile with the glass back. Mine's about 8 months old, and apart from the tiny hairline cracks in the back which are barely noticeable, my phone looks and feels new
Not sure if you mean without the case of rocking an N4 while being naked.... Surprisingly, the OP isn't clear about that either.

@oxxshadow, maybe you really should make the OP a bit clearer, as this could be understood in several ways

LOL right
I used my Nexus 4 with the Google bumper for awhile, maybe 2 months, but it was really annoying because I couldn't plug in my IEMs with the case on (Anyone with Shure SE215s knows the connector is pretty bulky), so I wound up ditching the case. I got the phone 13 months ago, and the phone is in pretty good shape. People say it looks new and can't believe its over a year old although it has a ton of microscratches on the back, a few nicks in the bezel from a couple drops where someone accidentally snagged my headphones and pulled the phone right out of my hand (The headphones probably saved the phone both times that happened, they stopped the phone from slamming into the ground), and a thin scratch on the front that is hard to see from a grain of sand on my jeans (Don't wipe your phone on your pants people... I usually don't, but that one time I was thinking "Well it's only this one time, I don't have anything better to wipe the screen with... I doubt it's gonna get scratched...), and a tiny pit in the front glass above the screen near the right bezel when I got out of a car with the phone in my lap BUT I did have the bumper on for that and that saved the phone from shattering. I don't really know how it didn't shatter anyway, a rock had to have hit the glass for that to happen. I guess I was lucky that time
waiting to see when my bonus comes in =P when that happens ill rock it naked.... ill even take the dBrand skin off =P miss seeing my sparkly back......

Oh Ok so I changed the OP a bit. Hopefully it is easier to understand!
I drop things lots and I'd probably quickly need a replacement if I went without a case =P
I made the mistake of not buying a case and a friend put my phone down on a wooden table and it cracked the back of my device. I raged...I still cry about it now because it slowly gets worse out of no where. I just want to rip the glass off.

Just get a dbrand skin! mine has a dbrand titanium skin on it the second day i got the phone. The back now looks sleek and it does not get any fingerprints and best of all, all the scratches you got will be gone!

yes it is!
I use mine without a case but I have front+back XtremeGuard on and carbon fiber skin on front+back too.
It has exfoliation on the silver bezel and another hit that bent the bezel a little.
I use it without any protection since I got it. It has already several cracks. It fell down at least 3 times because of the glass back. But why should I protect it if I will buy a new phone every two years anyway. If I sell it in the end for 50 or 70 bucks after 2 years is not that important to me. And the phone looks really great, so why should I hide it

I've had mine since Christmas and I finally got a cover yesterday (Ringke Fusion). I've already managed to put a little scratch on the back but I'm thinking of buying a dbrand skin to put on the back to make it a little more unique (I'm thinking the wood one)
I use a Skinomi on front and a dBrand on the back. I have the original Bumper, but rarely use it, it's too nice without
No case for me. Only a SGP Screen Protector and a glass back protector.
Oh yeah ! I am your man ! ... completely naked n4 ! no screen guards, no covers! and no scratches till now ...
