Otterbox - Commuter or Defender? - Galaxy S 4 Accessories

So I was in the store shopping for cases this evening and ran across the OB section. I haven't used an OB in years but thought I'd take a look. I ended up liking both the commuter and defender and was having a hard time deciding between the two.
Anyone else have this same issue, and if so what did you decide? I picked up the Commuter for no other reason than it seems to be well built and a bit less in the way. I also didn't really need the Defender's screen protector.
I would appreciate hearing opinions from anyone on these two cases.
Thanks in advance.

Get the defender. It's slim compared to past models and provides the best protection. I have an extra all black one if you want. Pm me.

My wife has the defender and I have the commuter.
I don't like either but prefer the commuter over the defender. The defender really reminds me of a case you'd get if you have a filthy kid or are accident prone (like my wife)
Defender is huge. Commuter is less huge but still large compared to my spigen slim armor and neo hybrid. As for protection they all do well against drops and like I said the defender is good against filth and children.

Having tried both i prefer the commuter by far. one thing to note, the defenders "screen protector" is terrible and more of nuisance in my opinion. Size wise they are about the same outside dimensions with the defender being .1" wider and .1" taller. the feel in hand of the commuter and the defender were both really nice, i prefer the curved commuter case though. Really it all comes down to whether or not you need a belt clip because the both the cases should provide more than enough protection for 99% of people. I also got myself one of the Spigen Glas.t nanos and it is an amazing combo with the commuter case.

I personally like them both so I have both a black defender and white frost\grey commuter case

For me the screen protector is the killer, i would prefer to use my own tempered glass one. I had a defender on my s2 and plastic screen protector just didn't last (rendering it a through away) and collected dust under it. I did prefer the rubber outer case though compared to the commuters hardcase but it was a lint magnet. Overall I think the commuter does as good of a job as the defender with protection but with a little less bulk!

Yeah the only way id ever use a defender on this phone is if i was going to remove the **** plastic screen protector and just use my glas.t one. good case but the overall protection improvement over the commuter is pretty slim.

I use my Defender all week for work because I work in construction, weekends I use my commuter...yup yup!
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk 2

I have a defender and agree with the others above; the screen protector is atrocious. I tried several methods to eliminate the "oil slick" effect but none lasted permanently. The feel isn't all that bad, IMO. Once I mar it up, I'll tear out the stock protector and install my own.

Same here. I had never even considered the defended cause of its size. Also because it was a pain to take off and put on each day. For years and years I've used a sandwich baggie.
So i got the grey and lime green defender and I must, it has certainly grown on me. I'm a painted by trade, so I deal with a ton of dust and debris, along with heights and paint of course. Now you can't argue with the fact that, even though you have any case covering your device, there is always that chance it csn suffer from a drop or whatever.
Just a week ago, I was working on a dormer on the top of a roof 2 storied high. So i listen to my podcasts all day long in work. So yep, took my phone out of my pocket to change PC, when it sort of got caught on the inner linking of my pocket, i reacted quickly but not quick enough. It fell and disconnected from my headset, and took the plummet 2 stories down right onto the pavement. My frikken heart sank. The first thing that came to my mind was that damn copay thru the insurance. To shorten this endless story, not o lt was there no damage to my device, but the case survived haha. Few scuff on the outer layer, but nothing too bad. I was simply amazed. Within the past few days, I ordered another, just to have. So im am very happy with the defender as you csn see
Sorry for such a long story lol

Check out trident cases. I have been using them since my motorola days. Have used OB cases as well but imo tridents offer the same amount of protection but at a cheaper price. Paid 22 bucks for mine from amazon and trident has good customer service. Not to mention if you have to warranty it they dont ask you to take 4 pictures of it.

So many complaints about the screen protector on the defender... Now this holds true to just about every phone I put a defender on, I would pop out the screen protector. If I turn on the setting for high sensitivity for glove use. U don't even know the protector is there.
So... I had the commuter for all of 30 min. It felt cheap and lose on my phone. The plastic just didn't seem to mold with the rubber very well. I traded it for the defender and I haven't even looked at another case since. Yea.. Its not the best looking case and it does add substantial bulk, but I never take it off and o have no complaints with it.

It doesn't seem like it would loosen up under normal use. Only time will tell though. It would depend a lot on how many times the rubber outer is removed and reinstalled I imagine.

This is the "rainbow effect" I had mentioned earlier. It's harder to get a picture of than I thought!

No apology necessary, it's great to hear the story. Thanks for all the opinions thus far. I haven't 100% decided yet, but y'all have given me a lot to think about, especially when spending $$ on a case.

Anyone else sick of Otterbox? I use to buy one at a min with a new phone but feels like the quality to design has gone down; no attention to detail, ignore the form factor of the thin phone, design oversights which lead to weaknesses in the case (Droid Razr Maxx Commuter has a thin piece that will break overtime, its just a matter of time). Just little stuff like this has me looking at other cases

[Review] Body Glove Smooth Case

Just recently bought a Body Glove Smooth Case for my Infuse from Walmart ($17.96 i believe is how much it came to)
Bought this case recently because I've been having butterfingers when it comes to my Infuse, a few nicks and scratches later I decided it was time.(shoulda been sooner) So I went for the cheap option of this case. It feels great, doesn't add too much more size to the phone, and it's a hard back so it can take a bit of a beating. It was easy to install, but I must say difficult to remove, I tried removing it exactly how instructions stated and all it did was damage the case. After a while I managed to pop it off. But all in all it's been a great case, and for sure worth the money, the color options is an added plus. Mine being a very stimulating blue color.
Out of 10 I'd give this case a 7.
Just my 2 cents on it.
Peace out with the Grease out,
Malicious, Much love.
Using this case for a good while now and yesterday I went to a party and stuff got crazy, long story short my phone was thrown a good 10-15 feet landed on concrete and bounced a little. This case saved my phone, hardly any damage done to the case, nothing cracked. This thing is solid. I recommend it.
A lot more resilient than its appearance might make you think. I've had it for almost a month and I'm extremely impressed.

Just bought one per your recommendation. Great case and defiantly provides protection feels solid without adding much to phone. (can't stand otterbox cases).
Infact it makes the phone easier to hold.
Edit: just wanted to say how it doesn't feel like a cheapo silicone case but actually feels like a quality product.

yes, feels great, doesn't add too much more size to the phone.
My case finally took a beating that took it out for good. After a while I noticed that this case became weak. Mainly from taking it off and putting it back on every time I had to pull the battery. But the other day it finally had it and cracked.

It sounds like you hate your phone more.
Why? The ballistic SG case is not quite as big as the HC case, but gives incredible protection. But hey, if you don't mind breaking and replacing your phones, go for it.
A friend of mine doesn't believe in cases of any kind and works construction. It will break eventually, and I'll be the first to say "I told you so".
Plus, a hardy case gives it that manly, rugged look. Sorry, I shouldn't assume you want that.
I don't know why really but ever since my early iPhone days I was really never a fun of otter box/ballistic cases. I bought on for my infuse but I only used it for maybe a week. Since then I purchased another body glove case and its serving me just fine

My philosophy is I bought the slimmest 4g smart phone and I intend to keep it that way
Besides, I think you will be surprised how much any sort of case can take, you don't need a full inch of plastic to take a hit, just enough to transfer the forces around the phone and not through the glass. I dropped my phone the other day, waist height, hit on the corner, scratched up the case a little, but phone didn't get touched
The body glove is a great protector and not extremely expensive. I'm a fan for sure.

HTC One S Otterbox Defender case

Wow these new otterbox cases are way better then the old ones. The plastic isnt flimsy anymore and it fits it perfectly on the One S. I've spoken on it and used speaker phone and it doesn't make it harder to hear or be heard. A deff good buy and on amazon or ebay its only $35
I was wondering if anyone has seen any accessories that can fit to the otterbox defender case? Before I had my HTC HD2 and I had a car mount that fits the otterbox case perfectly.
I'm getting mine tomorrow. Does it come with a screen protector? Cause I like my InvisibleShield HD screen protector and want to keep using it.

I prefer my Skinomi TechSkin because it is the same thing but cheaper. I've used the Zagg products before, but wasn't impressed enough to get a replacement when my keys stretched it in my pocket and ruined it. I do love my TechSkin, however.
Got my defender today..Not that impressed with the built in screen protector. It seems to bubble and give you a tactical feel to it.
otterbox defender vs commuter
I'm thinking about buying this case but im not to sure.
For you guys that already have it i've got some questions.
This is for the defender:
How much weight does it add?
Since it has a screen protector I don't need to keep my old one on do i?
Does it have a non belt clip piece? (flat back)
For the commuter:
Sounds like this one doesn't fit correctly any feed back?
^^ No, OB Commuter Case fits well. Had one on my One S for a few weeks and been happy with it.
Just got mine today. First impression is great product. Will post in a few days after some real world usage.

I just got my Otterbox Defender case and I absolutely love it. Its a little bulky but I take my phone with me on my bicycle and this case really has the protection I need in case I drop it from the bike.
I like my Otterbox defender very much. Makes the phone a bit bulky but protection should be good. The only thing I recommend is to throw away the built in screen protector as it makes the readability of the screen really bad. I replaced it with a normal clear screen protector and now I am satisfied.

I've got both now too, I ordered the Defender and they sent a Commuter by mistake, said keep it and we'll refund since we don't have the right one. Just got the Defender from another seller.
Build quality on both is really excellent, it took me a couple of minutes to work out how to get the Defender apart to get the phone in, it's that well put together.
The screen protectors on both leave a lot to be desired though, the one on the Commuter is good but leaves the top of the glass bare, the one built in to the Defender is just awful, it works fine but makes the screen very grainy.
My phones are subject to lots of bumps and knocks at work and good all round protection, especially for the screen when not in use, is important. The Defender with the addition of a decent screen protector fits the bill perfectly.
I got Commuter for mine, quite happy with it, but have to agree with the screen protector tho just doesn't cover all the screen so I left it off but in the 3 months I've had this case I've put it through a beating with no damage to my phone

otterbox defender vs commuter
i would go with the defender because what i see on the website it has a belt clip which the commuter doesn't have
Bit annoyed today, the retaining clip on my Otterbox holster snapped off while I was taking the phone out of it.
I'll get a chance to see how good Otterbox after sales service is.

Found some pretty good cases at a cheap price.....

Have a couple of these for my phone. They actually work very well and fit nicely. My phone came with one and I decided to buy another. Nice thig is the more you buy the more color combinations you can come up with. Here are a few pictures. To fin just type (Samsung i727 hybrid) into ebay and search through all the different colors. Not bad for under $10

Cool idea mixing n matching. My girl has one of these on her skyrocket. Good case indeed for the price.
I've seen them, but didn't give them too much thought because they seemed "cheap" in the sense of net being very good. Thanks for the real world update! :good:
I have been looking around for a good case, i had the otter box and its a great case but hard to get in and out of your pocket..... does the rubber on this case make it dificult to slide in and out of your pocket?
I recommend everyone take a look at the Ballistic Case line. I haven't found anything with this much protection. Check the Nexus S variant on Amazon for awesome reviews. TPU backing makes sliding in and out of your pocket a breeze.
The rubber corners that go a bit in front of the screen are without a doubt the best protection I've ever come across. No worries at all about any future drops, the extra few mm of bulk are worth it without a doubt.

I havent found any issues at all going in and out of my pocket. Being the skyrocket is very light (compared to my htc vivid) i would think that drops with this case would be more than effective at protecting it. This combined with a good screen guard is pretty good. Once and a while if you take your phone out of your pocket quickly you will notice the rubber on one of the corners might start to come off but it happens very rarely and its easy to pop the phone back in. I never liked the silicone cases but with this having the solid support that wraps around on all 4 sides it works very well. It also protects to hard keys on the sides and both the charging port and headphone jack. I like it better than the speck case i had for my vivid.
I am very anal about what I buy to protect my devices and I am inpressed with these. I will be buying one every payday until I have all the different colors that I want. I think I paid 7.99 with free shipping and had it here in 3 buisness days. Don't get me wrong though if you are very tough on your phone then I would recommend the Otter Box, Speck Candy shell or the Casemate Tough Series. But for most people these are more than satisfactory. Th rubber on the corners are pretty tough like that of the balistic cases. The case is just thick enough to keep the sensitive homekeys on the bottom from touching your face during a call.

Perhaps. The in/out of pocket is really a relative opinion unfortunately since some consider any resistance a huge annoyance. I can see the corners being an issue though, especially if you like to keep the phone in front Jean pockets.

Is there a built-in screen protector on any of these cases? Some of the descriptions are unclear, and a built-in would be nice. Having to adhere one to the screen makes my Otterbox Defender unusable, as it would peel the protector off every time.
My mom bought one of these off ebay for her Galaxy S2 and she really liked it. I was considering one for my Skyrocket, but I ended up getting a standard silicone case. I've always had problems with my phone sticking in my pocket. This hybrid case was easier to get in and out of pockets but the rubber parts on the corner did stick a little. After a couple of months, though, I noticed that the plastic part of this hybrid case had cracked in several areas. I'm not sure how it got cracked, because she hasn't dropped the phone or anything. If anyone is interested I can try to post pictures, assuming I can find where she put the damaged case.
I'd definitely be interested in seeing that. I took my Defender off last night (found it was causing some heat issues with ICS) and put a Zagg screen protector on, which more or less rules out the possibility of using the Defender again. I'm torn between one of the other Otterbox cases or a handful of these.
I have this cheapo http://www.ebay.com/itm/White-Kicks...423428?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2a1fef9d04
very similar type of design with the built-in kickstand. Personally the rubber hasn't given me any issues.
FYI, you can find virtually all of these cases on Amazon for less (including shipping) than eBay. Just search "i727 hybrid". If you're planning to mix and match, keep an eye on the manufacturers. Mybat and Case-Xpro seem to be the same company (or, at least, identical designs), but Dragoncell, which makes the cases shown in the OP, uses a different size of plastic mesh than Mybat/Case-Xpro do.
I'm going to order one Dragoncell, one Mybat and one Case-Xpro and see how much I like each. I'll post results here. I mean, $25 for 3 cases (incl. shipping) isn't much to complain about.

Anyone going caseless?

Hate cases on a nice phone, but worried due to reports of the lcd cracking in pockets.

Caseless and Happy
I've had my GS4 caseless since I got it just over two weeks ago, it's still in great condition. I generally don't like using a case on my phones, (I never used a case on my GS2 before this one) as I don't like the look and bulk that it adds, no screen protector either, I'm still amazed by how well Gorilla glass resists scratching, the screen on my GS2 still looks brand new, despite never having a screen protector on it.
Case less all the way, with a screen protector..prob don't neet it but I'm anal like that. Oh and changed the back to a metal one. Gives the phone a "heavier" feel.
Naked with a ArmorSuit Miltary shield screen protector and Seidio spring-clip hoster.
I am thinking of getting the metal back too. they look cool and seem to add weight to the back so the phone might be more likely to fall on the back in the event of a drop.
Im caseless and screen protector less, my phone flung off my lap when i got outta the car the othet day, cartwheeled on asphalt and only left a nick in the bottom right of bezel. No cracks thank god..
I think i may have a few light scratches, may get one of those fancy glass screen protectors everyone's been raving about

Not I. I had my Galaxy S II caseless without a screen protector and it held pretty well... That thing was pretty solid.
I was watching all the drop tests, and seeing how easy Gorilla Glass III actually cracks; even seeing on here where it cracked in peoples pants??? Seeing that this is a bigger device, somewhat harder to hold in my hands, and definitely a lot more slippery than the SII, I do not want to take a chance on the $649.99 device. I also like leaving the device laying flat down on a surface(still getting used to air gestures, but the notification air gesture is cool); but one of the first things to touch the surface while laying flat is the camera lens which bothered me. I also have AT&T insurance but after seeing this case, it made my choice...
Spigen Neo Hybrid Case (Satin Silver)
edit* funny I had a dream last night that I actually cracked my S4. In the dream, it felt so real and that feeling of the cracked screen just really brings you down (sorry guys for the ones who did), but when I woke up, I was so relieved...

You guys crack me up. Spend hundreds for the phone and don't want to spend more than 7.00 on a case. Just Kidding
I prefer a leather pouch. Will get the Spigen one for 29.99. Has always done well for me and allows me to "use" phone with no case.
I am getting 2 32gb S4's tonight. My son still wants a case to use and keeps phone in pocket while at work. Does bending, stocking. Doesn't want case while using the phone, like me. But, doesn't want pouch. Is there a hard case that easily comes off then back on. Looked at many web sites and videos. Seems once they are on, they are not designed to be popping on and off--
OP: Based on my research, I would get some kinda case for the phone. I don't think this one will fair as well as my One S and Blackberries when dropped--
I roll caseless with my S4 and HTC One, both with Ghost Armor front and back.

If I get a case its going to be that exact one. It really is a nice looking case imo. does it add much bulk? doesnt look like it in the pics.
I sometimes dream about my phone too. makes me feel a bit obsessed lol.
I went caseless until I noticed the metal camera ring got all scratched up. Luckily I found a dead pixel on the display and was able to exchange it because of that.
With the premier discount on my account, I picked up the decent Case Mate clear case from the AT&T for 35% off. It works and the camera ring is still shiny with love.

Let's talk Otterbox.

I have a pink/grey commuter case from otterbox. I have loved otterbox since my first case years ago. I may be off here but it seems to me they're getting a little shotty quality wise. My rubber seems to turn brown and attract every piece of dirt within a mile of it and now, I have just found, the pink has bled into the white on my phone and stained it. Is this the phone or the case being substandard here? I do love otterbox but I'm thinking its time to move on. What case can I look to for the same protection and reliability? What's the best/worst phone case in your opinion?

I'm a big fan of the Spigen Slim Armor and Spigen Neo Hybrid cases for this phone. High quality, fits like a GLOVE, not bulky at all, look great, and don't have the big lips like the otterbox that make dragging down the notification panel a hassle. Check out their site but buy from amazon, I think you can get the slim armor on amazon for less than 15 bucks at the moment.
I use an otterbox commuter for my s4 and it doesnt interfere with notifications panel at all.(that happens in the s2 commuter case)
Dunno about other colors but my black is holding up pretty good to daily abuse.

Using Spiegen Slim Armor and View.
He gives better design but I'm thinking the Otterbox have better protection if you drop it unfortunately.
Well it's dépend if you take care about your phone or not.

These cases are built for war to thick for me. I tried it for a week and ordered me a smaller case. These cases are perfect for people who drop there phone alot there well built but I rather have an extended battery and a case if I'm gonna make my phone this bulky.

Otterbox makes my phone feel like a brick so I went with spigen neo hybrid. Complete coverage and a little lip.

Just got a gift from a friend, Otterbox Commuter for S4, everything looks fine but the cutout for charging below the case seems not so accurate.
After the disaster which is the S3 Otterbox Defender, I have refused to recommend any Otterbox product to anyone. (the silicon would just keep stretching out of shape)
My GF's S3 Commuter fared slightly better with none of the silicone issues but the plastic shell cracked the first time she dropped the phone...
Fast forward to today... we're both using S4s and couldn't be happier with our Ballistic SG Maxxes. Truly a marvelous case which takes impacts and drops like a champ! The design of the S4 version is a little skimpy up top though but so far so [email protected]
I work in construction so I have a Defender on my s4. Holding up great so far. Thinking about picking up another smaller case for weekends.

Spigen Slim Armor
I have been using the Otterbox Commuter cases over the last year and have been really happy with them. However I recently got the Blue Spigen Slim Armor and it is really impressive how it fits, quality of construction, buttons are easy to push, fits perfect and looks are better than anything I have seen thus far. Plus it matches my Grabber Blue Mustang GT. hahaha Really impressed with it.:good: So far it is the best case I have had on any phone in the last 10 years.
I really like my green commuter. It fits well and looks pretty cool. The construction of the case seems very tight; on some past otterboxes, it's seemed a bit "stretchy" and not as formfitting right out of the box, but this one is very nicely done. My only gripe was the charger cutout was too small, but a kitchen knife and some diligence solved that problem rather quickly.

I had a similar problem with the charging port on my marine/dark blue commuter case. I didn't want to carve up the case, so I just ground the plug down a little with my dremel tool. I figured if I screwed it up I could always get another OEM charger. So far it works fine. I ground down to metal, but a quick check with Galaxy Charging Current shows that my charge values are unaffected. Is this a common problem with the Otterbox Commuter?
My first thought was that I got a fake one, but the box had the hologram sticker on top, website on back, sku sticker on bottom. The silicone lining seems firm and tight with no sagging. Most of the fake vs real videos on youtube stressed the cheap and floppy silicone lining in the fake Otterboxes. Mine seems fairly stiff and fits well.
I was originally eyeing off the commuter cases but after reading the whole screen cracking thread, I went with the defender. This is possibly the best case I've ever had on a smartphone. The plastic inside shell is fairly sturdy which I love because I carry my phone in my pocket all the time and I was worried about having torsion dmg.
P.S: I'm also looking at getting the neon blue spigen slim armor but I'm still not convinced on the sturdiness yet. I so do not want to have to go through samsung warranty for anything. ~_~
