Hey guys I was just wondering what's the best setup or what you prefer. Right now I'm on ICS heard it and gb in some way were better for tethering and I'm using clockwork mod tether atm. Anyone got some tips/tricks I'm trying to game over it right now its almost not bearable. What's the best 4g modem also or does it all depend where your located

Regarding modem, it all depends. Everyone's phone and location is slightly different, and so each modem option varies slightly.
Regarding the tethering, it all depends on what you want. If you just want something basic, if you want something complicated, if you want bluetooth tethering, if you want usb tethering, if you want wifi tethering. Also, remember that our phone only has G wireless, so it has speed limitations there.
For tethering apps, I'm a fan of both Barnacle (because it's been around forever and just works) and Wifi tethering for root users. Both work well, are free, and have a moderate scattering of options.
Thx a bunch did not know about the wireless limitations I will just USB tether from now on thx

After rooting using z4root and wifi tethering using barnacle I re-rooted my phone and rebooted. Afterwards I was able to use the stock wireless modem (settings-> wireless and networks-> wireless modem). Is this normal? I could not use this feature prior to rooting so it seems strange that I can after re-rooting. I am slightly concerned that using this stock feature sends a signal to USCC that I am tethering. However, I don't like to leave my phone in root status (paranoid) so not needing to root prior to tethering is appealing.
This is my first post, so if there is any info I am leaving out please let me know and I will provide it.
Thanks for the awesome forum!

I am using a data counter to make sure I stay under the 5GB limit. After tethering using the stock modem this now has a count of data transferred through tether. Using barnacle all data was counted in the cell category rather than the tether category. Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm guessing noone has experienced this, 3g watchdog works great for me - does it really matter how it reports as long as you have an overall % of your limit?
Thanks for the reply.
It does matter how it reports if it reports to USCC that I am tethering and not paying for the service. I'm concerned that activating the stock wireless modem sends this signal. I don't know what information about my data usage is sent to them. I'm likely being overly paranoid. It seems probable that the only information they have is data usage and not whether data is used through tether.
Does anyone know what happens when someone purchases the tethering plan? Does USCC just send a signal to activate it, our is it programming that occurs in the store on their computers? I'm wondering if they just flip a switch to activate it once or if that switch is flipped ever time you use the wireless modem.
they only see your data usage as a whole. One member reported going over n got his overage cut on half by showing off his phone lol. He didnt get charge for tethering. just watch your usage you'll be fine.
I've been using the wireless hotspot sparingly too with no issues
Swyped from my Mesmerize
what is our data limit isnt it 5gb?
Yeah, the monthly limit is 5GB
Martino, how long have you been using hotspot? Do you use it simply by going to Settings-> Wireless and Networks-> Wireless Modem or are you using a different app? How much data transfer qualifies as "sparingly"?
Hey here's the lowdown.
4g xoom w/tiamats 3.2.4 lte rom. Same kernal packaged with the rom.
I've searched around looking for a wireless tether app to work with the xoom.
Wireless tether 3.1-beta, wireless tether 2.0.7, barnical, etc.
None work. Trying to tether laptop to xoom. Thanks.

Are you just NOT paying attention to the initial post for that ROM? It clearly states tethering, at least 4G, does not work with that ROM. You have to disable LTE. It is a bug with the Kernel/ROM and it should be fixed soon.
Luckily I'm not as much of a nob as yu think. I did read the op of his thread and saw that. Even when in 3g (toggled via settings), it won't tether.
For some reason the apps won't complete the process of setting up the tether. IDK if its something to do with the roms settings or the app. I use wireless tether personally on my x2 and it works great.
Guess I should say it fail at "starting softap" and "activating wifi interface".
Hope this helps with diagnosis.

Try removing any security and see if it works?
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Security removed and still no joy. What is everyone else using to tether their xooms 4/3g?
Side note, hotspot notification from rom (blue tether hotspot notification) shows up when wifi tether is running.
Updated to beta8 and still doesn't work.

I don't use any special application, I just use the Wifi AP ability that is already native to Android.... it works fine with the XOOM.
That's funny cause everything that I have used, even the ap android tethering, doesn't work. Idk. Maybe I just have bad luck. Thx for yur guys help.

Use native tethering - all third-party tethering uses adhoc mode which doesn't play nice with a lot of devices.
You may need to freeze/uninstall TetheringManager2.apk - I forget if this was needed on Infuse. It was needed on the I777.
FoxFi is free on Android Market. I was using it for wifi tethering, until I realized it is just using the native tether feature in settings. It's a good app, though, and not just adhoc like the others.
For native tethering in uclb3, I now just go to settings / wireless and network / tethering and portable hotspot / mobile AP settings.
Delete the tethering manager apk in /system/app, or freeze it using Titanium Backup. I don't think native tethering works without doing that, and that apk is the quickest, and easiest way for at&t to pick up on tether usage (in case you aren't paying for a tethering plan).

Help
Sorry new to this so bear with me please. I went into titanium backup and there was no tethering manager apk or anything like it. Am I doing something wrong? i have firmwar 2.3.6 baseband I997uclb3 and kernal 2.6.35.7-I997ruxkg3-cl366622
If there was no tethering manager then it was probably already deleted in whatever rom you are running.
Do this..
Settings>Wireless> Tethering and Portable Hot Spot (or something like that... on ICS... can't remember exactly for gb. Then you pretty much just start tethering. And remember, if you are not on a plan then you risk getting caught.. so don't do it too much or it will be taking away.
Good luck.

So I did a quick search (phone searching is b never as good as on a computer) and didn't find much so I thought I'd ask... what's the difference between the two apps wireless tether and WiFi tether and which one works better on our phone?

If you root your phone, you can use the built-in hotspot application.

In regards to the two apps above, WiFi Tether worked very well for me before I patched the above.

Only difference that I can tell is Wireless tether for Root Users doesn't work and Wifi Tether for Root Users does. They both look the same but the latter has an additional option to change device profile and switching that to Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) allows it to work.
Use the built in tether, they don't charge anymore, no app needed

They don't charge for tiered/share data plans... Speculation is they do charge for unlimited users.
We don't know what the op is on.

I'm on unlimited and can't use the native tethering. It just gives the the same pop up window with a number to call to purchase it. Just sharing this as confirmation.....I worked around it.

tank you...nice post
If I'm not mistaken from a convo with Mr Verizon Store Guy, they stopped charging for tethering because of the rediculous amount of workarounds for close to every device that render their paid service pointless.
However, I heard somewhere online theres a clause for abusing the network in you end user contract associated with fees, but I'm not sure and didn't look into it too much. I don't use it too much and am not worried about my limits (cue wifi), so it'd prolly be wise to check yourself.
Long story short: search around as there are a number of ways as previously outlined. But should you choose to go bananas and over indulge in torrents or roms via 3g/4g, be aware of a potential bill the size of congressional legislation. Tether responsibly as bandwidth is shared by all network users. Don't be THAT guy

Lol, you mean that DB who has it in his avatar that he used over 100 gigs in a month??
Is it just me or is native tether slower than WiFi tether? Also can someone direct me to the latest WiFi tether treve mod apk please? Thanks.
Edit: OK so my native tether was working earlier today. Now when I go to use it, it reboots the hone everytime. While rebooting has been a natural thing on aosp roms, it always works after first reboot. Thoughts?

I have always found that the native tether does not work as well as an app for some reason but nobody has ever been able to tell me why.

Anybody want to run some speed tests? It would be interesting to see, in numbers, the difference.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I have personally done many, many, many speed test in the past and tested this issue b4 and from my experiences with it, app tethering is almost twice as fast and has a much more stable connection than native tethering. Feel free to d/l apps and try for yourself because I've done it and this is what I think. I use around 20 gigs a month tethering my ps3, personal business computer internet, streaming project free.tv. plus much more. I've spent plenty of time trying to get the fastest tethering speeds for these reason's and I use an app.

i can test native because i pay for it
So I found the thread for the trevE mod tether. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735
Also there is some good advice to get it working if it does not work. I finally got my WiFi tether app working by following suggestions on the thread.

CleanROM R2
CleanROM R2 allows tethering right out of the box for free using the native app. SpeedTest shows the same for me with it or PDANet+. In fact, it seems like PDANet+ is just a work-around frontend for the native app. FoxFi appears to be gone. When run, it just opens PDANet+.
For now, at least with CR R2, the native hotspot is all you need and CR has a toggle for that. Too cool!.
I know many ROMs now come with the native being functional and it is super nice to have a toggle or quickset tab for it, but like I said before, it just seems unreliable.
