Wireless tether vs WiFi tether - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I did a quick search (phone searching is b never as good as on a computer) and didn't find much so I thought I'd ask... what's the difference between the two apps wireless tether and WiFi tether and which one works better on our phone?

If you root your phone, you can use the built-in hotspot application.

In regards to the two apps above, WiFi Tether worked very well for me before I patched the above.

Only difference that I can tell is Wireless tether for Root Users doesn't work and Wifi Tether for Root Users does. They both look the same but the latter has an additional option to change device profile and switching that to Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) allows it to work.

Use the built in tether, they don't charge anymore, no app needed

They don't charge for tiered/share data plans... Speculation is they do charge for unlimited users.
We don't know what the op is on.

I'm on unlimited and can't use the native tethering. It just gives the the same pop up window with a number to call to purchase it. Just sharing this as confirmation.....I worked around it.

tank you...nice post

If I'm not mistaken from a convo with Mr Verizon Store Guy, they stopped charging for tethering because of the rediculous amount of workarounds for close to every device that render their paid service pointless.
However, I heard somewhere online theres a clause for abusing the network in you end user contract associated with fees, but I'm not sure and didn't look into it too much. I don't use it too much and am not worried about my limits (cue wifi), so it'd prolly be wise to check yourself.
Long story short: search around as there are a number of ways as previously outlined. But should you choose to go bananas and over indulge in torrents or roms via 3g/4g, be aware of a potential bill the size of congressional legislation. Tether responsibly as bandwidth is shared by all network users. Don't be THAT guy

Should be available from the market if you turn on airplane mode, then re-enable WiFi. It is the wireless carriers that are causing gathering apps to be filtered from the market, this should work around it, though.

Depends on what you are doing. Overall if you are just tethering to your computer PDAnet is your best bet. Xbox or PS3 (Ha if they ever get their network back) I would stay with Wireless Tether for root users.

If that's the case, has anyone been able to get wired tether (better anyway, data remains active on the device) to work? The htc tethering app seems to interfere.
Wireless tether works fine.
When I used "wireless tether for root users" my data was still active? I was able to make calls and reply to an email while being connected with a laptop.
I don't use it very often which is why I can't justify the extra cost per month. I had purchased "tether" while it was 50% for my blackberry for the same reason. They have that for android now to so that is an option for people.

[Q] Tether Apps that hide usage?

Hi everyone,
Wondering what apps people use for wireless tether that hide data usage from carriers. I currently use PDANET and also have wireless tether installed, but are there settings in wireless tether I can set so it will hide the usage? I did find some hits from other devices that had specific changed to the wireless tether source to do this, but nothing for the Charge. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Tom

No they can't. They can only see your traffic-for instance, logging on to Xbox Live will raise some suspicion because it wouldn't make sense for a phone to be logging in. Just don't use ridiculous amounts of data and don't go to any stupid sites.

Actually, it shouldn't be too hard for them to capture a packet and check the headers, which should tell them if the traffic is valid phone traffic or tether traffic. That is unless your tether software is re-shaping packets that flow through it.
But with all of their customers as long as you don't stand out, they won't look

That would assume that they have individual people scanning packets, rather than a piece of software monitoring packets and throwing flags. If you have software watching information, it doesn't matter how many sources it's coming from.

So far in 3 months I've used 165 GB. I do most of the bandwidth heavy stuff at night after 11 PM or 12 AM.
The thing is Verizon really doesn't care what you do. If a tower is congested they will throttle you, but that almost never happens except during peak hours. So if you're torrenting at 7 PM, your data may be (very temporarily) throttled to less than 1 mbps. But wait until 10 or 11 PM and you can consume data to your heart's delight.
Verizon's network is relatively robust (not nearly as good as European carriers though), so they could easily offer unlimited LTE to everyone, with throttling only during peak hours (4-10 PM). They don't do it though because they'd rather sell you 22 GB for $180, or just catch people with overage charges.
Yep I use all my data during night (10pm-6am) I work at that time and use my laptop at work with my phone. Verizon never said anything to me or slowed my connection

Hard to do! The data usage patterns of a mobile device n that of a computer vary a lot. The bandwidth used within a period of time is a sure shot indicator of the same. Best would be to get a home internet.
It seems like they are wising up --- or determined some new way of detecting it. Give us more information.

8GB this WEEK???? Give up and pay for tethering. There's no way you're going to be able to play that off as phone usage.

AT&T has the ability to do deep packet inspection to determine what OS is sending the packets - there are some fingerprints they can use to tell that it isn't an Android device.
This is a resource-intensive process so they normally don't do it.
But if you use 8GB in a WEEK, you can be sure they're going to investigate if that usage actually came from just the phone.

Maybe. I haven't gotten a nastygram yet and I tether my tablet all the time, but that's it.
I'm responsible about data usage though - even with moderate tethering I've never gone more than 500-700 MB per month.
I haven't gotten anything yet either (knock on wood) but I did get one of those "you are in the top 5%" emails this month. So I will be watching my usage a lot more considering multiple, members on various forms here are recently reporting this from AT&T.

OMG. 8 gigs in a week. Lulz. How? No torrents on teathering. My 2 cents
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I know this seems like a joke, but really, switch to Sprint. Unlimited means UNLIMITED, on 3G or 4G (although you're much safer tethering on 4G since they don't give a damn how you use it). That, and we have the GSII.
All carriers have a teathering plan in the works, even sprint. Soon teathering will only work with the proper plan. People have taken this for granted and abused the unlimited data which was not designed for 8gb a week usage. I know that is extreme. Think about it. The unlimited was made when the average person had no idea a phone could do it. Hell I ran my whole shop off a teathered connection to my tilt when our internet went down. But that was rare. Now every kid in the world has a phone that can do it, do they use it responsibily? Nope they are streaming movies in class, music.....you get the point lol. I can't blame the carriers. As more and more people live their lives with their faces buried in a phone or tablet, the data network that runs these device will need to be changed from what we are used to. With the new system you will not be able to hide what device is using the connection. So now its time to man/woman up and either get home internet or pay for the teathering.
I got the email ....i dont tether.
I tethered 1 time last week to test functionality on gtgs new thrill rom....
Is there maybe an apn issue where they think i am tethering when i am not????

Do you know what a T-Mobile hotspot is?
https://selfcare.hotspot.t-mobile.com/services_about.do
It has nothing to do with tethering your phone or even using your data plan. It's actually the opposite, it allows you to connect to a broadband network called "T-Mobile HotSpot".
Ya but we have tether hotspot on our phones meaning my friends tablet works places I am at cause I enable my phone to be a device to connect to via wifi.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Actually...
1) Yes, you can tether your t-mobile device.
2) Yes, you can do it without paying t-mobile.
HOWEVER
3) If you do it heavily, they will send you a message complaining, and telling you that if you want to continue, you'll need to pay $14.99
I received that message last month... to date they haven't cut off my tethering.. however, technically, they do charge for the service, even though it works without paying.
but...
4) I don't know if they will actually cut anyone off - I wasn't cut off, but YMMV
And, yes, they are now offering a free add-on now that allows you to legitimately tether without paying...
However "to protect revenue stream" they aren't offering it proactively, it's supposed to be offered as a save feature if someone is wanting to cancel.

What your talking about is using sharing your data plan.
"T-Mobile HotSpot" is a service. If you go to a restaurant and scan wireless networks there will be a "T-Mobile HotSpot" and you can connect to it and now you have broadband internet that doesn't count towards your data plan.
I got that bit lol. I guess the difference is more important to some then me.

Just got it activated on my existing 5gb plan. Thanks!
I wonder if you can qualify if you have unlimited data, they would probably force me to choose the 5 or 10th and give that up. I already pay the 15$ a month for the hotspot...

[Q] Tethering without T-mobile knowing

I actually DID get fully blocked from Tethering back in January. They'd been warning me for 2 months when it happened. I had gone over my cap by quite a bit in December, if that makes a difference... crawling internet was better than no internet! Had received several warnings. Made user agent and other changes in my browser that was supposed to hide the activity, but they DID cut me off. Tethering stopped working completely.
Thankfully that was right at the time they were offering the free tethering add-on if you upgraded to 5gb data from 2gb so I called up and had them add that. I was already at 5gb, but I told them I'd be dropping my data if they didn't give me the tethering... Don't know if that is still offered.

Some devices can't connect to an Ad-Hoc connection (which is what those apps create), like the PS3. Perhaps your tablet is like that too.
Ok thanks. I guess I'll just use the built in tethering app. I was using it yesterday for an hour or so and had no problems.
