Is it just me or is native tether slower than WiFi tether? Also can someone direct me to the latest WiFi tether treve mod apk please? Thanks.
Edit: OK so my native tether was working earlier today. Now when I go to use it, it reboots the hone everytime. While rebooting has been a natural thing on aosp roms, it always works after first reboot. Thoughts?

I have always found that the native tether does not work as well as an app for some reason but nobody has ever been able to tell me why.

Anybody want to run some speed tests? It would be interesting to see, in numbers, the difference.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I have personally done many, many, many speed test in the past and tested this issue b4 and from my experiences with it, app tethering is almost twice as fast and has a much more stable connection than native tethering. Feel free to d/l apps and try for yourself because I've done it and this is what I think. I use around 20 gigs a month tethering my ps3, personal business computer internet, streaming project free.tv. plus much more. I've spent plenty of time trying to get the fastest tethering speeds for these reason's and I use an app.

i can test native because i pay for it
So I found the thread for the trevE mod tether. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735
Also there is some good advice to get it working if it does not work. I finally got my WiFi tether app working by following suggestions on the thread.

CleanROM R2
CleanROM R2 allows tethering right out of the box for free using the native app. SpeedTest shows the same for me with it or PDANet+. In fact, it seems like PDANet+ is just a work-around frontend for the native app. FoxFi appears to be gone. When run, it just opens PDANet+.
For now, at least with CR R2, the native hotspot is all you need and CR has a toggle for that. Too cool!.
I know many ROMs now come with the native being functional and it is super nice to have a toggle or quickset tab for it, but like I said before, it just seems unreliable.

I have a question. I rooted my phone a couple days ago and downloaded wireless tethering. It said requires netfliter enabled kernel and wont let me use it. But today when i turned on tethering it worked! Wondering why it worked?? I didnt do anything to my phone O_O
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Which tethering app did you download? Wireless tether for root? I believe there is an "advanced" setting you can enable if the phone allows kernel support. It may be that it tried to enable this when you started the app. I think I remember seeing something similar last time o used tethering. As long as the app works now I wouldnt worry about it.

I guess its a good thing. But i just was just surprised the app would suddenly work. But i see ur point

Oh and its wireless tether. By three different dev.

Do you use the wifi feature on your thunderbolt and if so have you used it in your gaming console and do you get lag on it?
I'm assuming you mean mobile hotspot feature and I have tried it and yes I do get lag. The mobile hotspot does not give great constant signal so there are many breaks and drop outs. I would not recommend using this but give it a shot if you want.
Hope this helps
The factory mobile hotspot app has a cap on the speed. I get better results from other tether apps.

Agreed, you will get better results from additional tether apps that are offered.

even using other tether apps, things like online gaming and streaming video are not exactly ideal
Tried xbox live through it and was disconnected while searching for any online games. I would say that it's probably not the best idea.
I play wow, with vent and sometimes pandora on 2-3 bars of 3g with low pings...
Edit: using easytether (wired)

I played some games and downloaded so songs with PDA net on my desktop. It was really fast on 4G. But you have to pay for PDA net aftrler awhile. I use wireless tether to connect my xoom when I need it

Haven't messed with the wireless to much I'd go with a third party app for it. Or USB tether. Can run xbox live with usb tether even without much problems. Atleast in my experience

Has anyone else gotten a message that this will be blocked if the service isnt added???
And if anyone can explain how this is something different that can be charged for if it is a feature of the phone... Using the same unlimited data...

Not sure about that, but if you want wifi tethering, look up barnacle wifi tether in the market.

If it keeps up, go to your apn settings and create a new one with the apn internet2.voicestream.com and you should be able to bypass the tethering message. If you keep it by default, mms will fail with that apn. You should be able to set the epc apn for mms only and the other for internet. something like that.
You can also try internet3.voicestream.com also. Speeds vary for the two apn's based on my experience.

Yes, Tmobile has an additional package you must purchase to use tethering and hotspot. 15 and 10 per month, respectively.

I've used Open Garden and never gotten a message, but you can also use USB tethering and avoid any greediness from Tmobile.
Thabks for all thw suggestions everyone. I am currently trying the open garden one.

I would only see this when using Internet explorer. Use google chrome and you shouldn't have a problem.

Two tmobile phones using 5gb data/ month each for over 7 months, 4gb a month from computer using mobile AP....haven't had a warning yet. I read on another thread a long time ago that people where or where not getting notices depending on their type of data use....file sharing etc...not sure if that holds true all of the time though.

My sisters phone slows down after awile, and she uses netflix for about an hour, she gets a warning but we are no where even close to 5gb download.
I just got the T-mobile $30 5GB "unlimited"/ 100 minute prepaid voice plan.
In a short test the built in wifi hotspot feature in the stock Gingerbread Settings tab seems to work. T-mobile does not offer any add-ons for tethering on this plan.
Is it safe to use this built in feature, or should I be looking for some other app (open garden?) to do this?
nope this is what my dad uses and works great. if you have problems with it then get an alternative wifi tether.
clockworkmod tether is still in beta but I have it on my phone and it works great. google it. the software package you install on your pc installs the apk on your phone.
Me and my wife have been using the mobile AP for over a year and we just upgraded to ginger bread and now when we use it we get a message telling us we have to upgrade our plan and then next time we try to use it the Web will not work it just sends you to Tmobile. We tried downloading pda net from the market but you still can't go to sights that require passwords. It would be nice to find a way around this.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
I actually got that message twice (on stock, never since running custom ROMs), but they never followed through. Of course I don't use my phones data for my laptop often, only on rare occasion and usually not for more than a few minutes.

Tmobile can kiss my rear end on this one, they certainly did NOT have a tethering plan when I purchased the phone and its rediculouse to try to charge me now for a feature that was on the phone and free for the longest time now

Hey here's the lowdown.
4g xoom w/tiamats 3.2.4 lte rom. Same kernal packaged with the rom.
I've searched around looking for a wireless tether app to work with the xoom.
Wireless tether 3.1-beta, wireless tether 2.0.7, barnical, etc.
None work. Trying to tether laptop to xoom. Thanks.

Are you just NOT paying attention to the initial post for that ROM? It clearly states tethering, at least 4G, does not work with that ROM. You have to disable LTE. It is a bug with the Kernel/ROM and it should be fixed soon.
Luckily I'm not as much of a nob as yu think. I did read the op of his thread and saw that. Even when in 3g (toggled via settings), it won't tether.
For some reason the apps won't complete the process of setting up the tether. IDK if its something to do with the roms settings or the app. I use wireless tether personally on my x2 and it works great.
Guess I should say it fail at "starting softap" and "activating wifi interface".
Hope this helps with diagnosis.

Try removing any security and see if it works?

Security removed and still no joy. What is everyone else using to tether their xooms 4/3g?
Side note, hotspot notification from rom (blue tether hotspot notification) shows up when wifi tether is running.
Updated to beta8 and still doesn't work.

I don't use any special application, I just use the Wifi AP ability that is already native to Android.... it works fine with the XOOM.
That's funny cause everything that I have used, even the ap android tethering, doesn't work. Idk. Maybe I just have bad luck. Thx for yur guys help.

So I did a quick search (phone searching is b never as good as on a computer) and didn't find much so I thought I'd ask... what's the difference between the two apps wireless tether and WiFi tether and which one works better on our phone?

If you root your phone, you can use the built-in hotspot application.

In regards to the two apps above, WiFi Tether worked very well for me before I patched the above.

Only difference that I can tell is Wireless tether for Root Users doesn't work and Wifi Tether for Root Users does. They both look the same but the latter has an additional option to change device profile and switching that to Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) allows it to work.
Use the built in tether, they don't charge anymore, no app needed

They don't charge for tiered/share data plans... Speculation is they do charge for unlimited users.
We don't know what the op is on.

tank you...nice post
If I'm not mistaken from a convo with Mr Verizon Store Guy, they stopped charging for tethering because of the rediculous amount of workarounds for close to every device that render their paid service pointless.
However, I heard somewhere online theres a clause for abusing the network in you end user contract associated with fees, but I'm not sure and didn't look into it too much. I don't use it too much and am not worried about my limits (cue wifi), so it'd prolly be wise to check yourself.
Long story short: search around as there are a number of ways as previously outlined. But should you choose to go bananas and over indulge in torrents or roms via 3g/4g, be aware of a potential bill the size of congressional legislation. Tether responsibly as bandwidth is shared by all network users. Don't be THAT guy
