Edit: Updated 7.31.2011 to include new "hipri" APN type, and a totally new procedure to prevent APN selection problems.
Just a quick note: the discussions in posts 2 through 169 of this thread are now deprecated, as the original post was totally different at that time. Posts 170 and onward are relevant to this heavily revised original post. So any procedures/workarounds in posts 2 - 169 should be ignored or taken with a grain of salt.
BACKGROUND
The stock Inspire ROM contains 2 APNs (Access Point Names) in the mobile network configuration. One is for data, and one is for MMS. Almost all of the custom Inspire/DHD ROMs on this forum only have 1 APN, where data and MMS are combined. This single APN is sufficient to obtain maximum data speeds in some markets, however in many markets such as mine, your phone needs to be running a dual APN configuration similar to the stock ROM to obtain maximum speeds.
As always, before making any major config changes be sure to fully backup your ROM. If you mess up real bad or something goes unexpectedly wrong, then you might permanently lose your connection with no recourse other than a complete restore.
These changes are for the United States AT&T network only.
FIRST, DETERMINE IF YOUR ROM HAS A LOCKED OR UNLOCKED APN CONFIGURATION
From your home screen, press the Menu button --> Settings --> Wireless and networks --> Mobile networks --> Access Point Names. If you see a lock symbol on your APN, then you'll need to jump down the locked APN procedure further down this post. For everyone else with an unlocked APN configuration, procedure is immediately as follows.
PROCEDURE FOR ALL ROMS THAT HAVE UNLOCKED APNs:
Step 1. Delete all APNs
If you're not already at your APN screen, then from your home screen press Menu button --> Settings --> Wireless and networks --> Mobile networks --> Access Point Names
Press the left side of your 1st APN to go into the settings of this APN, then press Menu>>Delete APN.
Repeat this process for any other APNs you have. The goal is to delete all APNs so we can start from scratch.
Now do the next steps in the same order as below:
Step 2. Create a new APN (Menu>>New APN). Everything is case sensitive and must be entered exactly as below. This will be your 1st APN:
Name: MEdia Net
APN: Phone
MMS protocol (if applicable): WAP 2.0
MCC: (don't change this number)
MNC: (don't change this number)
APN type: default, admin, hipri (notice there is no space on either side of the commas)
APN protocol (if applicable): IPv4
everything else: <Not set>
Press Menu>>Save. You will now be back at the initial APN screen.
Step 3. Create another APN (Menu>>New APN). Everything is case sensitive and must be entered exactly as below. This will be your 2nd APN:
Name: MMS
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
Port: 80
Username: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MMS protocol (if applicable): WAP 2.0
MCC: (don't change this number)
MNC: (don't change this number)
APN type: mms, supl (notice there is no space on either side of the comma)
APN protocol: IPv4
APN protocol (if applicable): IPv4
everything else: <Not set>
Press Menu>>Save.
You will now be back at the initial APN screen again. Make sure the 1st APN (named MEdia Net) is selected (via the round radio button on the right side). Your data connection will drop for several seconds and then come back.
We're done. If something went wrong and you need to revert back to your default APN config, from the APN selection screen just press menu and select "Reset to default". Or worst case scenario, simply restore your nandroid backup.
Proceed to TESTING section below.
PROCEDURE FOR ROMS WITH A SINGLE LOCKED APN:
If your APN is locked (it shows the lock symbol and you cannot change the settings), then we're just going to add a second one.
From the APN screen, press Menu>>New APN. Here are the settings for your 2nd APN. Everything is case sensitive and must be entered exactly as below.
Name: Media Net or Media Net 2 (if your 1st locked APN is named Media Net, then just name this one Media Net 2 - the name in this field isn't important; it just needs to be unique)
APN: Phone
MMS protocol: WAP 2.0 (this option might not be in your APN, so don't worry if you don't see it)
MCC: xxx (Don't change this number)
MNC: xxx (Don't change this number)
APN type: default, admin, hipri (notice there are no spaces between the words and the commas)
APN protocol (if applicable): IPv4
Everything else: <Not set>
Once you have the above settings entered, press menu and save. You will exit back out to the APN selection screen. Now you need to select the little round button for the new APN (Media Net/Phone) that you just created. Your phone's data connection will drop for several seconds as it switches to the new APN, and then come back. If you find that your connection doesn't "stick" on the 2nd APN (i.e. the selection button keeps reverting back to the 1st APN) then reboot your phone and try selecting the 2nd APN again. It is mandatory that the 2nd APN is selected to receive the speed benefit.
We're done. If something went wrong and you need to revert back to your default APN config, from the APN selection screen just press menu and select "Reset to default". Or worst case scenario, simply restore your nandroid backup.
Proceed to TESTING section immediately below.
TESTING
If you're in one of the markets that benefits from the 2nd APN, you will see an increase in download and upload speeds in a speed testing app. Also, uploads will not pause and stutter nearly as much anymore. If for some reason you notice your speeds are slower, this is likely due to the normal wide variance in AT&T network speeds, so keep testing. This APN fix is not known to slow down your speeds; they will either be the same or faster. If your average speeds are roughly the same, then your market is one of those that doesn't benefit from the dual APN configuration. For testing your speeds, I recommend the free Speedtest.net app (found in the Market). It allows you to choose from a wide variety of server locations to test against. Be sure to run multiple speed tests from different locations to different servers at different times of the day before jumping to any conclusions. With my phone sitting in the exact same spot I've seen speeds vary from 500k to 5MB/s in a 10 minute period, so keep in mind there can be a wide variance in AT&T network speeds and cellular conditions can change frequently and rapidly.
At this point, there are a few build.prop settings that might enhance your speeds even more, but that is beyond the scope of this thread.
Good luck and let us know your results. If you have any problems, post a message in this thread and I'll try to help you.
I'll give it a try. worth a shot.

Back when I was trying to find the root cause of the problem, your method did not work for me. Unless you're referring to the stock ROM, for which I've never had any speed issues with any version of radio that I tried.

Absolutely. My goal was specifically to get CM7's cell data speeds as fast as the stock ROM. This fix also worked for me in CoreDroid as well.
For some reason this didn't work for me. Swapping the telephone db caused the phone to fc. Even after restoring the original file the fc persisted. I had to flash my backup. I didn't change the build prop settings.

I had FC. To get rid of it I went to ROM manager and ran fix partitions and rebooted it and that seemed to work. Try and keep me posted.

I just wiped and reflashed with CM7-stable, used the Root Explorer method and all is good...got a big time increase in download speeds, no FC's. So it's looking like this fix will not work for everyone. I searched the entire xda forum, and there's not much discussion of people messing around with different copies of the telephony.db file, so we are definitely treading on new ground here.

Just curious, are you seeing an increase in cell data speeds?
Regarding the FC's, I'm wondering if for some people the file permission needs to be reset once it is copied.
Thanks!
A bit new to the Android dev community but quickly becoming a big fan of it. Rooted my 2nd Android phone ever just this past weekend without much trouble at all. Again thanks to the fantastic dev community.
I even managed to pull off what you described here in your post...yes yes...even adb is sort of new to me.
But alas, it worked! My data speeds are noticeably faster now Running on Android Revolution HD 4.0 by the way.

Bad SIM card.
no, tried 3 different sim cards, all the same response, 2 different mytouch 4G's with the same problem, only says limited service
I had a very odd issue similar to this after trying some different roms and then using CWM to restore my RG rom...
In short, I was only able to get service via wifi calling and while in my 'home' area. As soon as i left my home, I would loose all service while others maintained service just fine. If i didn't know any better, it would seem that my phone was locked to a specific tower.
It took a factory reset on the rom before I could get any service back while outside of my home market.
that almost sounds like the same issue, I can get wifi with no problem, just will not let me get service any other way, when I try to select tmobile from network selection it says your sim card will not let you get service
shot in the dark, but... did you check your apn settings???
how do I check apn settings?

I would grab a fresh rom, factory reset the device, flash the rom and reflash the radio. At this point, if you don't do so regularly, MD5 check what you download to ensure its as it should be.
If we go with the 'locked to a tower' assumption, when this happened to me, it appeared 'locked' to the tower it first connected to upon reboot. If you are not in that area now, it prob wouldn't connect.
Also, i have had nothing but problems when I attempted to apply the APN settings listed in forum posts. Just default them, see if it helps..
Settings> Wireless & Network> Mobile Networks> APN Settings > menu button, reset to default. But i think this only affects mms, internet and not the connection to the mobile network itself.
**edit**
I also received an error when attempting to manually connect or search to a mobile network.
factory reset, from cwm?
Yes. Once completed, i went ahead and reflashed the rom while still in CWM.
any other ideas if this doesnt work?
lol, brick it and call tmobile.. "its stuck in a bootloop"
another thought is to call tmobile and ask them essentially if they can reset your device in the towers. I worked for them (voicestream) like 12 years ago, the lingo has most likely changed but there maybe something in the system that is causing the problem..
I was able to see the problem go away once i factory reset, so I didn't bother. Just don't mention anything that could be noted as 'warranty voided'..
Typically, when I call, i give them just enough information to get them to do exactly what I want. They shouldn't care that you run a custom rom and they don't need to know.. just the fact that you cannot connect to the network should be information enough.

Sorry about the copy and paste but this seemed to be the one exception to the case, I would take a little time to look threw some of the rom settings. If this doesn't work send the phone back, it seems to me that's the last thing you want to do but if this doesn't work then you may have no choice but to and why waste more time.
i doubt this issue has anything to do with the apn settings as those only affect T-Mobile data, MMS and SMS. Even if they were completely wrong, the phone would still make a connection to the network for voice services.
When I got my mt4g with new simcard, I have to call tmo to reigster it.
Or perhaps the phone is simcard locked.

That's true, I had to do the same, I had a Blackberry prior to the MT4G and had to call and give them my IMEI and other info in order for them to activate my service, I got mine out right not through T-Mobile. I had to agree to the terms over the phone with CSR before I could do anything other than make calls.
Still I would think if he got the phone through T-Mobile and had the SIM sent with it as security goes you would still have to call in to verify you got the phone and call in the IMEI to be activated for that account.

Actually, this does work. The only difference I can see between the APN that was on the phone and the new APN created is the following:
Original APN
APN Type: default,supl,admin,hipri
Newly created APN
APN type: Not Set
I have no clue what this means, but that is the only difference I see and the newly created APN does in fact work and allow me to tether over 4G.
Also, I had purchased EasyTether a while back to use on Sprint with my HTC Hero (before I learned to root a phone), and easytether also works using a USB cable.
Thanks to the OP for finding this!!
remove admin from apn type.
Found a possible issue with this fix. When I have the newly created APN enabled, I cannot send an mms. When I select the original APN and try and resend the mms, the mms goes through.
Anyone have suggestions?

edit: jtress i was testing it out and it does work with the current settings. i'm not sure why you are having problems with mms. does anyone else have this issue with the mms not going through?
I have no problem either

Does this still work? I've tried it and it didn't work for me when trying to go to amazon.com. I've also tried deleting the default apn and removing the apn type. I've even tried using wap.voicestream.com as the apn. So far nothing works.
My issue with the APN and not being able to send MMS, may have something to do with me being on Tmobile prepaid plan.
I can live with it this way. I very rarely use the tethering. So, if all I have to do is go in to the settings and switch the APN for the few minutes I use the tethering, I can live with that
tethering workarounds
Regarding the new tethering block, there are a few other workarounds that worked for me.
1) Change your user agent string to something mobile on your browser
2) Browse through an encrypted proxy (work VPN works great for me)
3) Use the internet for things other than HTTP and you'll be fine. (HTTPS works fine)
Confirm that it worked for me. I entered the new APN and restarted the phone and now it works like it did before. Thanks!
hey guys, does the usb tether still works after the update?
Wow I feel both dumb and extremely happy all at the same time but I got it to work! I never restarted the phone before so I guess my phone never properly set up the APN.
The way I got it to work:
1. Selected Default T-Mobile Data APN
2. Delete all of the information from the APN type
3. Reboot Phone
Thanks for reminding me to do the simple things!
Looks like the fun is over...
I had been using Wifi tethering for root users and it seemed to allow me to use it just fine. All of a sudden this morning it stopped working and I got a push notification to my phone about mobile hotspot access being blocked. Came here, found the APN settings in this thread and tried it. Worked for about 30 seconds before the same thing happened again.
Looks like they are being pretty hardcore about it now...
Anybody else experiencing this or know how to get around it still?
After the black update, I lost the ability to send and receive MMS on my Unlocked Lumia 1020 on T-Mobile USA network. I've entered the fast.t-mobile.com APN settings on both Internet and MMS, I have 4G LTE internet working, but MMS still does not work.
Before there was a Nokia app that auto configured this for me. I can't seem to find this after the Black update, or it is baked into the system now, but for the life of me, I cannot get the MMS working with the APN settings I have. Tried both epc and fast.

I'll be going into my local T-Mobile store later today, hopefully I can get an answer from them.
I got mine working.
OK so with the access point app installed what I did was install a manual APN outside that settings app. I went to settings > cellular and pressed the add MMS APN.
Once I set it up I was able to send but not receive. Just use the APN settings available pretty much anywhere for T-Mobile. After that remove the settings all together and reboot.
I guess the APN app setting kicks in again and viola. Worked for me anyways. Hope it works for everyone else.

No joy. Wi-fi is off, data is on (I can get to Google). I've also tried with LTE enabled and then at 3G (LTE off). Pictures continue to send fine, but just won't receive them.
Even if Wi-fi is on, I don't receive pictures.
I guess I'll wait another couple of days and see. Worst comes to worst, I can switch back to StraightTalk w/ATT sim and be where I was. Seems odd to work correctly on a second tier (in my mind anyway) carrier and not a first tier one.
Thanks!

No joy. Wi-fi is off, data is on (I can get to Google). I've also tried with LTE enabled and then at 3G (LTE off). Pictures continue to send fine, but just won't receive them.
Even if Wi-fi is on, I don't receive pictures.

Yeah, really not a reason that it's not working. What size MMS are you trying to send?
I've tried about 20 different pictures that I've sent historically, plus AT&T Support couldn't send me pictures... nor could any friends. I don't know the size of any of the images. Just for fun, I've tried four different SMS/MMS apps, yeah I know.. that shouldn't matter at all.
On occasion the app has said "resizing image" before letting attache and send it, so some were "large".

On your AT&T account online, what type of data plan do they have you on?

I tend to use 250ish, so the limit works for me.

Have you tried resetting the APN and then re-entering the AT&T settings? Just to see if something needs to be cleared out?

Yes, I've deleted all the APN settings my phone had and then manually entered in the one that I'm using.
I am.. it seems, quite the anomaly!
Thanks for your time and thoughts.

It's actually happened before. It's always something simple too.

My wife was having that problem on her GS3 with AT&T. In the messaging app we set it to roaming Auto retrieve and it worked after that.
Hope that works for you.

I just tried that and didn't work.
And, I would like to officially stack claim to my status as an anomaly. I had one (1)picture that I sent myself today out of about 50 that actually went through. That's right, one was sent/received.. no setting or anything changed and back to can't receive.
I did also try deleting all APNs, rebooting the phone (taking the "clean things out" idea to an extreme) and manually typed in the APN.. no good.
Could my problem be with the Message Center Number? I've seen that referenced in a few places... but as I can send, it seems that wouldn't be the issue.
If I dial *#*#4636#*#* and go into Phone Information, the SMSC is blank. While I can type info into it, there's no "save" or "update" option...
If I hit refresh it populates with "+131323149810",145
Part in "s looks right for ATT, but again... no way to save it. The Update button doesn't 'seem to do anything.

It's definitely a weird problem for sure. It's one of those problems that if I had the phone in front of me...it might be a different story.
