After the black update, I lost the ability to send and receive MMS on my Unlocked Lumia 1020 on T-Mobile USA network. I've entered the fast.t-mobile.com APN settings on both Internet and MMS, I have 4G LTE internet working, but MMS still does not work.
Before there was a Nokia app that auto configured this for me. I can't seem to find this after the Black update, or it is baked into the system now, but for the life of me, I cannot get the MMS working with the APN settings I have. Tried both epc and fast.

I'll be going into my local T-Mobile store later today, hopefully I can get an answer from them.
I got mine working.
OK so with the access point app installed what I did was install a manual APN outside that settings app. I went to settings > cellular and pressed the add MMS APN.
Once I set it up I was able to send but not receive. Just use the APN settings available pretty much anywhere for T-Mobile. After that remove the settings all together and reboot.
I guess the APN app setting kicks in again and viola. Worked for me anyways. Hope it works for everyone else.

Ok, for those of us that have problems connecting to non-mobile websites, this solution worked for me. I've tried so many combinations- all resulted in internet working, but no MMS. I need MMS!!!
I was also up all night with AT&T regarding this issue (still pending). So after a couple hours, multiple tries, I hung up, they said they'll call me back after they find a solution. Whatever! It was 3:30am, I was trying different combinations until I passed out. I woke up and it was working!!! Powered off & on a few times. Still working. Applied the same settings on the wife's Skyrocket and now it's all working.
Name: attwap (name it whatever you want)
APN: wap.cingular
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Menu> Save. BackButton. Select the APN you created (green dot). BackButton. Done.
Noobs - To get to APN settings: Menu> Settings> Wireless and network> Mobile Networks> Access Point Names. Menu> New APN.
I dont know if "wap.cingular" is faster than "phone" (other APN), or vice versa. I tried speedtest on both, same ballpark in my area. The point is that the internet and MMS is working. I will "settle" for this until AT&T fixes this problem. LTE not yet available in my area. They said the PTA network is brand new and they're still working out the kinks.
Hope this works for you, too.
Works great man, I spent a lot of time on this last night couldn't get both internet and mms to work.
Ditto, I ended up going back to pta because I couldn't get MMS to work on anything else.
I'm glad it worked for you guys too. I was a bit annoyed switching back and forth whenever I had to send an MMS. The trouble was my wife couldnt- didnt know how. Now life is good... for now...
Well LTE is suppose to roll out to NY in the near future so hopefully we only have to use this work around for a bit more.
APN Differences?
Thanks Mike-
Works great! Data is constant now throughout all the sites I visit, no data loss. Also MMS works! And through speedtest app my DL is very close to the other APNS here in my non-LTE market in Harrisburg, PA.
Can somebody explain or point me in the direction of the differences between the APNS: pta, phone, and wap cingular?

looks as though you can't even use the phone apn along with the those mms setting in the same profile anyway.
Worked for me also.
Seems to work for me too. I don't know much but, all this cingular stuff wouldn't suggest we are using a different network would it? And we get a bill for roaming or something lol

Dont think it's an APN issue. "wap.cingular" is widely used. Maybe the phone just needed a restart. I treat my phone like my computer, leave it on all day, but reboot it every once in a while... and of course, back that thing up. (I dont mean the song)

No, not fix. Its just a work around to get your internet working with MMS still active. Not supposed to make things faster, better or orgasmic... just working.

Did you do everything in the instructions? Including selecting the APN (green dot)?
Ok guys, here is a temp fix for you to continue using the mobile hotspot. But I am not sure how long it will be able to work until it gets blocked.
Go to Settings
Mobile network
Access Point Names
New APN
set the name
set the APN to: epc.tmobile.com
save
after you save, select the new APN you created instead of T-Mobile data.
Anyone mind confirming?
yeah please confirm if this helped anyone

Bigger question is what is the new APN? epc has been the updated apn for a long time since the days of wap/internet2/3
ziddey just create the new APN with epc.tmobile.com and save it as is without any additional changes.

Actually, this does work. The only difference I can see between the APN that was on the phone and the new APN created is the following:
Original APN
APN Type: default,supl,admin,hipri
Newly created APN
APN type: Not Set
I have no clue what this means, but that is the only difference I see and the newly created APN does in fact work and allow me to tether over 4G.
Also, I had purchased EasyTether a while back to use on Sprint with my HTC Hero (before I learned to root a phone), and easytether also works using a USB cable.
Thanks to the OP for finding this!!
remove admin from apn type.
Found a possible issue with this fix. When I have the newly created APN enabled, I cannot send an mms. When I select the original APN and try and resend the mms, the mms goes through.
Anyone have suggestions?

thanks for pointing that out jtress, will try to look into it.
edit: jtress i was testing it out and it does work with the current settings. i'm not sure why you are having problems with mms. does anyone else have this issue with the mms not going through?
I have no problem either

Does this still work? I've tried it and it didn't work for me when trying to go to amazon.com. I've also tried deleting the default apn and removing the apn type. I've even tried using wap.voicestream.com as the apn. So far nothing works.
My issue with the APN and not being able to send MMS, may have something to do with me being on Tmobile prepaid plan.
I can live with it this way. I very rarely use the tethering. So, if all I have to do is go in to the settings and switch the APN for the few minutes I use the tethering, I can live with that
tethering workarounds
Regarding the new tethering block, there are a few other workarounds that worked for me.
1) Change your user agent string to something mobile on your browser
2) Browse through an encrypted proxy (work VPN works great for me)
3) Use the internet for things other than HTTP and you'll be fine. (HTTPS works fine)
Confirm that it worked for me. I entered the new APN and restarted the phone and now it works like it did before. Thanks!
hey guys, does the usb tether still works after the update?
Wow I feel both dumb and extremely happy all at the same time but I got it to work! I never restarted the phone before so I guess my phone never properly set up the APN.
The way I got it to work:
1. Selected Default T-Mobile Data APN
2. Delete all of the information from the APN type
3. Reboot Phone
Thanks for reminding me to do the simple things!
Looks like the fun is over...
I had been using Wifi tethering for root users and it seemed to allow me to use it just fine. All of a sudden this morning it stopped working and I got a push notification to my phone about mobile hotspot access being blocked. Came here, found the APN settings in this thread and tried it. Worked for about 30 seconds before the same thing happened again.
Looks like they are being pretty hardcore about it now...
Anybody else experiencing this or know how to get around it still?
This weekend I moved from StraightTalk (w/ATT SIM) to ATT. Everything worked fine on ST, but now that I'm on ATT directly.. I cannot receive MMS.
I can do everything fine -- send/receive SMS, access the Internet at LTE speeds, send MMS. I've tried a bunch of APN's and my current settings are below.
Any thoughts on what to switch would be greatly appreciated! Since I'm on a Nexus 5, AT&T has basically shrugged their shoulders and said, It's not an ATT phone, so all the features may not work.
Name: ATT Phone
APN: phone
Proxy: not set
Port: not set
Username: Not Set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMSC: ://mmsc.mobile.att.net (removed the http to get past the newbie link filter)
MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net

MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: Not set
APN Type: default,mms,supl,fota
APN Protocol: IPv4
APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4

No joy. Wi-fi is off, data is on (I can get to Google). I've also tried with LTE enabled and then at 3G (LTE off). Pictures continue to send fine, but just won't receive them.
Even if Wi-fi is on, I don't receive pictures.
I guess I'll wait another couple of days and see. Worst comes to worst, I can switch back to StraightTalk w/ATT sim and be where I was. Seems odd to work correctly on a second tier (in my mind anyway) carrier and not a first tier one.
Thanks!

Yeah, really not a reason that it's not working. What size MMS are you trying to send?
I've tried about 20 different pictures that I've sent historically, plus AT&T Support couldn't send me pictures... nor could any friends. I don't know the size of any of the images. Just for fun, I've tried four different SMS/MMS apps, yeah I know.. that shouldn't matter at all.
On occasion the app has said "resizing image" before letting attache and send it, so some were "large".

I just tried that and didn't work.
And, I would like to officially stack claim to my status as an anomaly. I had one (1)picture that I sent myself today out of about 50 that actually went through. That's right, one was sent/received.. no setting or anything changed and back to can't receive.
I did also try deleting all APNs, rebooting the phone (taking the "clean things out" idea to an extreme) and manually typed in the APN.. no good.
Could my problem be with the Message Center Number? I've seen that referenced in a few places... but as I can send, it seems that wouldn't be the issue.
If I dial *#*#4636#*#* and go into Phone Information, the SMSC is blank. While I can type info into it, there's no "save" or "update" option...
If I hit refresh it populates with "+131323149810",145
Part in "s looks right for ATT, but again... no way to save it. The Update button doesn't 'seem to do anything.
K
It's definitely a weird problem for sure. It's one of those problems that if I had the phone in front of me...it might be a different story.

I had the same issue. You have make sure that APN type is left blank. This fixed the issue for me. I had to use APN backup then SQLite editor to remove "default" from APN type and restore the APN.
Hope this helps.

What does it mean by APN type. Just so you know there is an additional APN menu on Google Hangout(default messenger for me). I did not touch anything there, it's there by default. In the APN settings you should have an option for "APN type". Mine was always defaulting to "default, hipri" whenever I would try to set it up. If you can leave it blank without it defaulting back, you should be good. I had to make a backup of the APN then change the database and restore it to make it stick. I will try to post some images for you.

I'm not sure when exactly I lost the ability to send mms through the default messaging app but it definitely works on 5.0.2 and definitely doesn't work on at least 4 different CM12.1 roms, all very cleanly flashed. It works through textra and chomp though, so it's not an apn issue. No one else seems to be complaining however...maybe most people don't use the pre-installed messaging app? I don't know, but I wish I knew why it stopped working and how to fix it.

However, I noticed I couldn't send MMS through Messenger. I found the thread for correct AT&T APN for MMS. I checked and configured my APN to the correct settings. However, still no MMS sent capability. So I switched back to the standard Hangouts and no problem.
However, I have to think I can't be "stuck" on using Hangouts for MMS, right???

Its apparently an issue that Google has, the app doesn't know what APN to use. Hangouts or another SMS should work fine.

I'm running CM12 (not .1 though) on my LG G3 (D850). I couldn't get Messenger MMS working until I deleted all the APN's that I didn't need. Only kept the ATT LTE one and now MMS works just fine. YMMV, but worth a shot.
I had issues with the APN after a CM12S update. If you are rooted, rename /data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db and data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/shared_prefs/preferred-apn1.xml to have a .bak extension (or delete them outright) and reboot. The system will rebuild them and you should get your telephony database and preferred APN restored. If you're not rooted, you don't need to, but you can rename the file via ADB.

https://jira.cyanogenmod.org/browse/BACON-3371
This is the bug log for Cyanogen and they just escalated the issue to critical.
Similar problem but slightly different here.
When I attempt to send mms (using messaging, messenger, hangouts or textra)
It causes device to drop data connection until I turn cell data off and on again.
If I do not send any mms internet works fine on 3g, H+ and LTE (4g)
I have removed all but the optus mms apn, updated the APN to match optus APN listing....
(Primary proxy and authentication had to be changed)
Still no progress. Anyone able to shed some light on where I going wrong?

when I upgraded to 12.1 my apn was set to internet, rather than cricket aio.
Cricket AIO seems to have the correct settings according to https://www.cricketwireless.com/sup...ice-byod/customer/bring-your-own-android.html
Had to delete internet apn.
Reboot.
Everything's working.
