I've got a brand new Desire S and I love it. Fast, smooth, responsive. Battery life (OK, over my total 2 days of ownership only!) has been brilliant - 9% drop overnight for example.
I'm about to return it.
Why? Because of one thing that makes it almost unusable.
I am, of course, referring to the "Grip of Death" - as per the iPhone 4.
There are a few oblique references to this on the net, but I can't find any detailed posts.
Some mention has been made about this only being a WiFi issue, and it is true that WiFi is badly affected. However I also see 3G signal drops when I hold the phone in portrait mode with my hand wrapping around the base (as most people would in normal "phone" use) - which is, of course, where the antenna is (incorporated into the battery cover)
The WiFi drops on mine are tragic - I can be 3 metres from an access point and if you hold the phone incorrectly (!) the WiFi signal drops out completely and you are on 3G data. Even if directly under the AP you can easily get the signal indicator to drop from full to under 50%.
However the 3G drops are also bad. In my flat, which has a good signal, I can get to one or zero bars of 3G signal just by picking up the phone.
So I have a phone that is unreliable in picking up calls, switches to 3G data when there is a perfectly good AP just nearby, and is basically, generally unreliable.
It's a shame because, apart from this, it's a brilliant little device.
Am I the only one affected this badly? Maybe I have a poor example?
I have a case arriving today to see if it will help. Otherwise it's back to the shop!
hmm..you are the first person to report a drop in 3g signal
can any one else confirm this?
or is it just that the OP got a defective unit?

I'm wondering if only certain phones are affected. Engadget doesn't mention it and this review specifically says it isn't a problem. It is a mixed bag of responses from posters here. Is it possible that Techradar got an early review model and the problem has since been fixed? You think HTC would comment one way or another since this could affect sales.
Just tried it on my DS, but the death grip does not influence my 3G signal.
With wifi on, I manage to lose only a little bit of signal while holding it in such an unnatural way that it will never occur using it normally.

can you try covering the back of your device as much as you can with your hands & test the wifi & 3g signal?
it would be very helpful for us
Covered the back as much as I could, no problems with 3G, Wifi drops to zero...

i am relived that there is no 3g signal drop
the wifi part is a bit depressing but i can manage without wifi...(but hope they fix it somehow)

but i hope htc does something like give replacement battery covers which fix the issue..because that is the only hardware defect that people are exaggerating about..
Ok, a few tests, as long as I still have it:
Portrait mode:
No issues in normal one- or two-handed operation.
As soon as something, e. g. my hand, covers the top plastic part at the back the wifi signal goes from all bars down to the dot, or disconnects entirely. I'm not so sure about the mobile signal, some of the time it drops to about half the bars it's had before, but with a considerable delay, and it's a bit erratic at the best of times, so it might just as well be other (environmental) causes.
Landscape:
I really only do this two-handed, with the left hand holding the phone, fingers bunched behind it, thumb in front, covering the HTC logo and first few mm of the screen; the right hand operates and/or stabilizes the phone.
This instantly kills the wifi stone cold dead. 3G actually stayed the same or got better(!)
To sum up: wifi is badly affected to the point of uselessness, 3G doesn't seem to be.

can you try the wifi again in landscape? this time without touching the aluminum part of the phone?
(dont cover the aluminum part with your hand or any other item)

Actually, I don't see how that would be possible? Covering the top plastic part without covering anything else, I mean. I tried a few contortions and nearly dropped it.
Care to elaborate?
it is a bit tricky i know (dont drop your phone trying lol)
how about putting on top of two books?(such that the books only touch the plastic )

Why? We arent't their QA department and I've no hopes of getting more than ... err ... yes, "You're holding it wrong." in soothing customer rep speak. Raising awareness of the issue is the best one can do, IMHO - once the tech mainstream press picks this up there's at least a chance of a fix. (That is, if one is actually possible, it might be a concession to the design.)

i'm in contact whit the HTC Dutch support desk. After a view mails whit the 1st line of support they send me to the technical support.
It looks like that they are doing there job.
i tried and tried and tried again... i couldnt find any sings of the grip of death!!

just as i thought it is the metal chasis....
i have heard that wifi has problems passing through metal...
if this really is the reason then i think nothing much can be done ...
can someone else also verify this?

I just called HTC and had them send me out a new battery door. I was having problems with the signals. Have any of you had these same problems? If so have Yall got a replacement from HTC and did it fix the issue?

nope, haven't had any reception/signal issues at all.
I believe the death-grip affects your wi-fi signal. When I move my phone to landscape mode and hold it as indicated in some videos, momentarily a bar goes down in my wifi signal but nothing like an interuption. It doesn't drop (and reconnect) wifi either.
It seems to be a hit or a miss with these phones

This is why I'd really like it if someone who replaces their battery cover could post before and after wifi signal strength from the same location. It is possible that there has been a redesigned battery cover with a better antenna placement.

I am currently having a HUGE problem with death grip. So bad that it drops my WiFi calling when im texting in landscape even from about 15 feet from my router. I am going to call HTC tomorrow and request a new back cover just because its a free step I can take to try and fix it.
seems like HTC have a problem with this model
i have to wait 7 days for my Sensation to come from service
then i will see what is the next step... media, solicitor .... we will see

ok... so after reading your post I decided to test it out. My router is on the 2nd floor in the study. I used landscape mode to send a couple of emails and texts from the first floor and outside my home. The signal dropped a couple of bars each time and recovered. Didn't drop the wifi signal for sure.
I think it is still a problem and HTC needs to get a fix out. Don't know if it will be a f/w or h/w but it needs to be out. I guess if everyone having this issue raises enough hell, HTC may act sooner.
The 4g phones seem to have a different placement of the wifi antenna and does not contain a death grip like problem due to this reposition.
You can higher the wifi signal (battery usage) in the wifi advanced settings.
Doesn´t help anyway?
All sensations will do this. Rooting the phone and installing custom ROM will fix the issue. Before if i placed my hand over the top of the phone, wifi would drop, sometimes even lose signal entirely. Now after root and ROM, it doesn't even drop one bit.
I was about to return my phone due to this issue, i am glad I waited a bit.

My phone is rooted (s-off) with all bloatware removed. Its still on stock ROM though.
Since we have S-OFF now, the custom ROM's for sensation have started to flow. Just waiting on those ROM's to be stable before deciding on which one to use.
BTW which ROM are you using!!!
Changing the back cover will make no difference. I got a replacement and saw no difference at all.
When I would go into landscape I would lose 1-2 wifi bars, but after I flashed Android Revolution 1.1.6 and kept the stock radio I started only losing 1 bar if any at all.

InsertCoin Sense Android 2.3.4 STABLE 1.2
I have tried them all. This one is by far the best for everyday use.
Everyone complaining about death grip. It's there on all phones, it will go away with a root and custom ROM.
I haven't experienced this at all. compared to my buddies iphone 4 where there is a serious death grip problem any drop in signal on my sensation is moot.

I've heard that it does, but I'm still waiting on mine to arrive. We have FAR FAR lower signal strength with this phone than with our other phones (motorola cliq / mytouch 4g's)
I just checked and I'm on zero bars right now. I usually have 4 bars right here with my other phone. It's rediculous. Holding the phone reduces my signal strength by ~40-50%. It can completely lose signal, right under a tower (in visual range) if you hold your hand flat against the back.

For many people, this is not the case. I know there are different revisions for the back cover. I think it is due to that.

Did your wifi situation improve after u got the new cover? my device sucks.. it drops all the way down to zero.. thinking of getting the g2x instead
Signal is good when phone is turned to 2G only, so this appears to be a firmw-/software issue rather than a battery-cover issue.
I had the same problem when i first recieved the devie but as you say custom rom sorted that

My wife with x10 mini gets enough signals on her mobile to send/receive calls without voice interruption and I can't even dial from it...
My friends tell me that my mobile mostly remains off but i know it's due to low reception...
How can such a small x10 mini perform better that Sensation?
Last option for me is to boost reception by Aluminum foils... Anyone tried such a Hardware Mod?

Alas, I can't say I've tried this but now that you've mentioned this option I'm tempted to experiment with it.
What i do have a lot of experience with is flashing and testing different (software) radios. You should read up on the topic of "radio" and "RIL" since you've assessed that location is not the problem.
Then again you might have reasons for not wanting to flash ...

Lol... The initial part of video is exactly what i do when i get calls....... But that's really not the mod i would want... I want some extra foil inside casing that should not look bad from outside...
I once connected aluminum foil with the terminals with back cover off and its signals went from 3 bars to full 5 bars... But when i placed aluminum foil inside and packed back cover on it, signals dropped again...
I have tried ALL radios and RILs in the thread... With 10.56 i used to get 2-3 bars but with those i couldn't even send or receive a message... When it's 4 bars, it was working
With latest radio 10.58 and ics radio 11.59, It simply puts 'no network' when signals are low enough that are not ready to make calls...
So flashing radios is just playing with bar indicators. No gain ...

It's weird that the mini performs so much better at the exact same location. Have you excluded the possibility that you have faulty hardware?
Amazon sells an antenna booster for HTC that basically enhances the antenna in the way you describe. Just search for "htc antenna booster". Even though they only cost a dollar or two, it might be more fun to copy their design and make them yourself.

I made it... Today i tried myself to get a network boost and it worked!!
I called my friend today from basement and walked every corner of the Room to test the mod and he said my voice was crystal clear without interruption...
Then i asked him to call me and i placed my mobile in a place where i used to get absolutely no signals and he told me my number got through to him on first attempt....
it never worked in my room and now its working everywhere in the Room...
I am sooooo happy...
The only problem is, when i grip the phone then its the same situation as previously ... For that i have to ensure i hold my phone on thumb and index finger and keeping the palm away from the back...
But this much is also enough for now... In basement i won't hold it tight...
I seem to remember seeing this mod being done, but that it had a negative effect on battery life. Please report back after a couple of days use, I'd like to hear how you get on.

I didn't use signal booster, just used aluminum foil to increase reception strength...
I don't think it drains battery but even if it does, it's better than no signals..

Maybe I'm wrong but did You try to change network mode setting in Mobile network section to GSM only.
It works for me in places with poor reception.
It will give you crappy internet, but you can switch it back to GSM/WCDMA Auto when you leave the house.
With GSM only you should get signal anywhere in the house or basement or any other place where any other phone can have any signal.

don't consider me so low.... It's the first thing i do after flashing ROM i.e setting it to GSM only, there is no WCDMA network in my country...it's all GSM...

Haha looking forward to your vid to see where you placed the fool. I tried foil once, but didn't notice much difference. I read somewhere that aluminum isn't the best conductor, so I was going to try gold foil instead. Just never got around to it.

That's what I just did, from no signal at all-0 to 2-3 bars and I bet it can be done better and get more.
Can you tell me what is the result with and without your antenna in "asu" or "db". An example how much did it improve your metal foil. And anyway why did you choose one side longer than the other?

You bet it can you have made a half wave dipole the length of each element is critical depending on frequency used there are simple formulas to work out the exact length of the antenna
Still great work around if it actually works one problem is the case acting as a shield to your two tinfoil elements

I have just bought my Nexus S and am experiencing a weak wifi signal. I normally get 3 bars on all other hardware in my bedroom but am only getting 1 bar which occasionally goes up and down to 2 bars. When I am 3 meters away from the Wifi access point i only get 3 bars out of 4. All my other hardware gets full bars. When i am 6 meters away from the access point I have only 2 bars showing for wifi.
The wifi signal icon seems to fluctuate alot. Does anyone else have a similar problem?

I always thought that these connectors were for a power mat to recharge the battery...wow I'll go to bed smarter tonight !!
First and foremost bars don't mean anything really. The signal strength typically is better but what matters is the SNR (signal to noise ratio). This can by typically improved by allowing your router to switch channels automatically (from the default 6) to find the most open one. Adding your own antenna is a bad idea and it likely will make the problem worse. Those antennas are precisely designed (exact configuration) for that ranges of frequencies, adding wire will ruin those characteristics.
With GB the wifi signal was completely awful...but now with ics wifi isn't that bad....I'm not having a lot of issues now...

I haven't seen any difference in wifi signal between GB and ICS: in both of them I get 1-2 bars while my ipod gets full signal. BTW it isn't a good idea to mess up with your phone's antenna.
Most probably it is not.
WiFi antennas on theese devices can even be SMD only (trying to improve is waste of time), or "copper plate sticker" type, ussualy stickered on the internal back cover.
I've been messing around with the second type on crappy chineese WiFi phone - I've added a tiny connector used in mobilephones and connected simply a piece of coax wire to make a dipole. After few changes signal finally got a bit better, but also because in original it was really poor.
If there is a sticker-type antenna, it is theoretically possible to change antenna quite easy. In practise, you will hardly get it better because you can't just put some wire in and done (well, you can, but it will be like wining a main prize in lotery if it gets better). The wire should have right size, right shape and must be on right place. And milimeters makes a difference there, so have fun
Most likely it can get better only with some kind of external antenna, but you could hardly use your phone as mobile then
Easiest way to tune-it-up could be disconnecting the original sticker and connecting a flexible internal notebook type of antenna, but even that will probably be too big to fit inside - it must not overlap another antenna. And that's not the only rule.
Even if it does not overlap anything, it can interfere with other circuitry or Tx-devices. Bluetooth works on almost the same frequencies as 2.4GHz Wifi, for example. It's a piece of science theese frequencies, actually

Wifi signal is crap, I'm pretty handy with electronics but I've read that even the chipset they've used in the NS is rubbish... Does anyone know which reasonably new handsets have good wifi range? My old N1 was pretty good but it's just too old.
if someone can confirm that it's the antenna and not just a sh*t wireless card then i'll have an attempt at replacing it with laptop antennas.
A little question, it won't be easier to improve the antenna of the WiFi router, instead of the mobilephone's one?? You can do that simply, by putting a can on that antenna (Search on google for the tutorial, it really worked for me).

Check the Battery Cover, and you will find that. But it's not sure

There's definitely something wrong with the Nexus S 4G's wifi. I have to be next to the router to be able to use the wifi. No other device, phones, tablet, notebooks, etc has an issue. Odd that others are having the same issue.
Did they forget to connect the wifi antenna?
just upgrade your phone maybe? and your antenna is somewhere in the back.
I found that the WiFi on my NS went to **** after upgrading to JB.

I had very poor reception right from day one. Tried various Stock ROMs, CM10, AOKP, CM10.1 etc.
Searching on google didnt help and all I could get was issues related radio (luckily I never had issues with Cellphone signals) and
some issues were related to Wifi on JB.
I came to the conclusion that my issue was only specific to my hardware.
Wifi signal reception was just one point around 80db or so.
There was no warranty on my phone since it was used T-Mobile purchased in India.
When I almost lost the hope, one fine day googling landed me on a similar issue with our big brother htc one x.

When I did the squeeze test on my one s, I could notice improvement in reception. I was so glad to nail down the problem area.
I didnt want to solder my HOS, instead took three threads of copper (from Electric wire) and threaded them together (like "U" as shown in picture)
Placed them at the point of contact (shown as "1" in the picture) so as to make good contact with the back cover (shown as "2")
Just put the cover back, and my wifi reception is awesome now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didnt want to solder my HOS, instead took three threads of copper (from Electric wire) and threaded them together (like "U" as shown in picture)
Placed them at the point of contact (shown as "1" in the picture) so as to make good contact with the back cover (shown as "2")
Just put the cover back, and my wifi reception is awesome now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In case you still have you HOS can please make a photo of your 'repair' (meaning the wire placed on the contacts)?
I tried what you said and it didn't work, maybe I'm doing something wrong.

OK, this is the only thread on the whole internet that make sense ..tried the hardware fix, soldered the U shaped wire on both ends of antenna metal in phone... didnt work...

No.. The imei is fine and 3g is working great.. It seems some problem with WiFi partition or radio... I will try flashing both AMS confirm

and then some...
I stripped some 20 gauge speaker wire and made the U shape. No soldier either. Works great. Thought I might have to tape the cover on since it popped off a couple times the first couple days, but it's seating fine, now.

Use WiFi Analyzer (free app) to check your signal with the squeeze test to avoid what happened to munnibhai (and the thread above might be useful if it isn't a hardware issue).
Worked for me as well. More of a mini-pancake shape of fine copper wires worked best for me.

My GF's HOS isn't able to find WIFI connections (no signal is detected). Could I fix it?

I don't have the back of my phone anymore. I needed a new phone and when I got it it was missing the back to the top. Is there any other way to boost the wifi signal? I literally have to sit in front of the router to catch a signal it is extremely frustrating. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
