Improve Nexus S WiFi antenna - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
Is it possible to improve the wifi antenna of my nexus s? With my last nokia it was possibile by salding an extra copper wire, is there any similar mod that I can do on it?

not 100% sure but the antennas are in the back cover along with the nfc chip.

If you remove the back cover, you can see the connector.

Improve Nexus S WiFi antennaArrow
I have just bought my Nexus S and am experiencing a weak wifi signal. I normally get 3 bars on all other hardware in my bedroom but am only getting 1 bar which occasionally goes up and down to 2 bars. When I am 3 meters away from the Wifi access point i only get 3 bars out of 4. All my other hardware gets full bars. When i am 6 meters away from the access point I have only 2 bars showing for wifi.
The wifi signal icon seems to fluctuate alot. Does anyone else have a similar problem?

I always thought that these connectors were for a power mat to recharge the battery...wow I'll go to bed smarter tonight !!

First and foremost bars don't mean anything really. The signal strength typically is better but what matters is the SNR (signal to noise ratio). This can by typically improved by allowing your router to switch channels automatically (from the default 6) to find the most open one. Adding your own antenna is a bad idea and it likely will make the problem worse. Those antennas are precisely designed (exact configuration) for that ranges of frequencies, adding wire will ruin those characteristics.

With GB the wifi signal was completely awful...but now with ics wifi isn't that bad....I'm not having a lot of issues now...

I haven't seen any difference in wifi signal between GB and ICS: in both of them I get 1-2 bars while my ipod gets full signal. BTW it isn't a good idea to mess up with your phone's antenna.

Most probably it is not.
WiFi antennas on theese devices can even be SMD only (trying to improve is waste of time), or "copper plate sticker" type, ussualy stickered on the internal back cover.
I've been messing around with the second type on crappy chineese WiFi phone - I've added a tiny connector used in mobilephones and connected simply a piece of coax wire to make a dipole. After few changes signal finally got a bit better, but also because in original it was really poor.
If there is a sticker-type antenna, it is theoretically possible to change antenna quite easy. In practise, you will hardly get it better because you can't just put some wire in and done (well, you can, but it will be like wining a main prize in lotery if it gets better). The wire should have right size, right shape and must be on right place. And milimeters makes a difference there, so have fun
Most likely it can get better only with some kind of external antenna, but you could hardly use your phone as mobile then
Easiest way to tune-it-up could be disconnecting the original sticker and connecting a flexible internal notebook type of antenna, but even that will probably be too big to fit inside - it must not overlap another antenna. And that's not the only rule.
Even if it does not overlap anything, it can interfere with other circuitry or Tx-devices. Bluetooth works on almost the same frequencies as 2.4GHz Wifi, for example. It's a piece of science theese frequencies, actually

Wifi signal is crap, I'm pretty handy with electronics but I've read that even the chipset they've used in the NS is rubbish... Does anyone know which reasonably new handsets have good wifi range? My old N1 was pretty good but it's just too old.

if someone can confirm that it's the antenna and not just a sh*t wireless card then i'll have an attempt at replacing it with laptop antennas.

A little question, it won't be easier to improve the antenna of the WiFi router, instead of the mobilephone's one?? You can do that simply, by putting a can on that antenna (Search on google for the tutorial, it really worked for me).

Check the Battery Cover, and you will find that. But it's not sure

Wooooow Nexus S have WiMax

There's definitely something wrong with the Nexus S 4G's wifi. I have to be next to the router to be able to use the wifi. No other device, phones, tablet, notebooks, etc has an issue. Odd that others are having the same issue.
Did they forget to connect the wifi antenna?

just upgrade your phone maybe? and your antenna is somewhere in the back.

I found that the WiFi on my NS went to **** after upgrading to JB.

External antenna/signal boost?

Hello! I'm looking for a way to boost my signal. I've noticed that when I have under 3 bars (and even if it bounces up to 3 and back down) my battery drains quicker than it can charge. At work as long as I have 3+ it will charge faster but if I'm at a different spot and its under 3 it drains. Also, it heats up (usually hangs out around 98.6 degrees but sometimes it'll go 105+). My main reason for wanting a boost at home is because I tether to play games when my sisters hog the house connection. So I'm looking for a cheap way to boost my signal. Small repeater sort of thing or something. To my understanding the little spots under the cover allow you to plug in external antennas, so where can I find everything for that? (And yes I saw that people can't get signal back after)

We used to live in an AT&T dead spot (yeah, yeah, who doesn't?) and ended up putting a powered wireless repeater in the house with an external antenna on the roof. I believe the manufacturer was Digital Antenna. They're not cheap, but the wired versions (if you can live with that) are a bit cheaper.
As long as you have high speed internet at home get an Airave. It puts up a tower in your house and processes everything over your home internet connection. 5 bucks a month i believe.

I thought about airwave but people ten to not pay the internet from time to time xD and does the signal crap out if people use the internet? Its only a 768 connection (country ftl) and people tend to netflix and cam -_-

The airrave uses your internet connection for 3G data and voice calls. If your internet is slow to begin with and ppl are hammering it all day long the airrave won't work well for you. Also, it doesn't hand calls off to the real cell network, so if you're on the phone and you leave your house the call will drop. If you have good signal outside and bad signal inside, one of those repeaters is the way to go - but it ain't cheap.
Dang ok. What about something like the Wilson Magnet Mount Cellular Antenna at Radioshack? (Its on the site. Id link it but you need 8+ posts >.<)
I'd just limit your sisters ip address/mac address with a QOS policy, so that she can't hog all the bandwidth. (would be done at your router)
I've heard and seen on this board some nasty results from connecting external antennas to the connection point behind the battery cover. Do a search in the forums to see, I can't remember exactly off the top of my head.

So far, everyone on this forum who has tried so with a Galaxy S has ended up with some permanent baseband (or whatever is responsible for the gsm/cdma part) corruption. What ended up happening was that the internal antenna would turn off. In some cases it meant that they could only call with the external antenna plugged in, and in other cases is meant that neither the external or internal antenna would work. (note: This has happened only on captivate and vibrant so far, so I am not sure what will happen on CDMA but.... Better safe than sorry right!?).
oh and sorry for the large font.... It catches your eye... ~_~

lol I did that when i got my first smart phone, the htc touch. Thankfully back in those days sprint would fix any problem or give you a new phone no questions asked for 55 dollars. ( I used to find inventive ways to break my phone. Like the mentioned external antenna, or a homemade battery back)
I'm interested in a solution to this as well, preferably something that doesnt have a monthly fee attached.
In my basement, I get about 1-2 bars of service, and sometimes nothing at all. Is very frustrating to receive texts up to an hour late.

Antena WIFI extend signal

Hi guys I have a usb wifi reciever, and I want ti extend the range, I have a flat near my house with wifi and its about 400metres away, I wanted to know if some how I can extend the signal reception to pick up this wifi, the usb reciever has a small antena that can be taken of, could I attach coaxial or other kind of cable and attach it to my tv antenna or a satelite dish I have to pick up sky? Please aswer me, I think this is the right section, for me this question is a big thing because ive been without internet for 9 years know, I only have my phone! Thanks!

An antenna is made for a specific wavelength, there is some physics behind it so you can't just put a big antenna and expect it to work. What you can do is extend the range of the emitter. You can do that either by getting a high gain antenna or a directional one.
I've also seen people receiving wifi from a distant router with a directional receiving antenna, but it has to be especially made for wifi, you can't use a tv one.
Also take in consideration interference. If there are lots of objects and other devices operating in the wifi signal range between you and the wifi router that signal is going to lose its quality so even if you'd get 100% signal, it might get jammed by all the interference.

Thnks for the clarifications, ive seen this antena on ebay but dont know what the range is! Any idea?, what u said about directional recieving antenna, whats that? Could u please upload some pics? That looks like a cheap antenna. I don't think anyone can tell for sure what you need to receive a signal from that far away. There are so many unknown things you need if you want to make the calculations.
The gain of the antenna is used to calculate how weak the signal can be and still be received.
Think of it as hearing a guy scream at a distance.. you can have an amplifier next to your ear, you might hear him if it's a directional amplifier but you will also hear everything that's between you and him. Although sound waves are different than electromagnetic waves, you can think of it like this to understand why the long distance is such a big problem.

Try this: http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html but I don't think this will work at that range.
If your usb wifi reciever have an external port for antenna, try to connect an axternel antenna to increase the range. This may work. Or you can buy a cheap wifi router to bridge with the one existing in the flat.
And YES, interference may be a problem!

My HTC Sensation 4G, like the majority, suffers of the terrible Death Grip problem/issue. The signal decreases both wifi and mobile signal.
I've founded some advices, since change radio version, including many radio/Ril combinations... Also, aluminum foil (initially it doesn't convinces me, at apply it... neither)
Some day in a free time, after make some philosophization I've get to this conclusion: use cable.
Yes, CABLE.
As you know, our Sensation has its antennaes in the back case, and if we remove that case out signal is over.
This trick consists in strenght the Wifi and Mobile signal, right this our signals stay alive although our back case is out.
If we put again the back case, the signals become more strenghten.
----------------------- What we need: -----------------------
Our phone, slim and bare cable, pliers/chisel/pin, insulating tape, and so much CALM,
----------------------- What to do: -----------------------
We locate, please, the antennaes position.
Now we cut two bits of the cable.
According to the images situate the cables.
Finally, join the cable with the insulating tape.
You can make this with the phone turned on.
----------------------- Some considerations: -----------------------
In wifi photo (near to camera) preferably, join the cable to first pin (number 1). It doesn't effect if connect to the second pin, and it could function if connect it to both.
In mobile data photo (near sim/sdcard) preferably, join the cable to second pin, if you joins it to the first one there's no effect.
If we "cap" the antennaes, only one or two signal lines can be lost, but the signal can be complete in few seconds.
----------------------- Some advices: -----------------------
NEVER join both cables, it can provokes short-circuit.
NEVER join a cable outer to battery pins nor to battery itself.
You can activate the "Better wifi performance" option in wifi menu.
----------------------- Conclusion: -----------------------
This method could improve the wifi and mobile signal. Is recommended use a correct radio, and a matching radio/ril, etc.

I did similar to my phone, as I found the reported signal wasn't as good as on my desire HD.
I think there's a slight improvement, but I couldn't say I've tested it scientifically. In my office the signal is quite poor, after doing the mod I found the signal doesn't drop out anywhere near as much, but I can't say its increased call quality.

Yes, the major risk is that the mod could become into a short-circuit ONLY IF you JOIN THE CABLES each other.
E.g. join the mobile signal cable with the wifi cable.
Negative long-term effects?
Surely NO. There aren't negative long-term effects. One month ago I've made this trick and I never experimented negative effects.

Remember, this trick increases a (much) bit the signal (mobile and wifi), ergo, in my case/opinion there's not signal drops with this trick.

i tried both mod and i don't get a good result for the wifi (long/short cable, different paths left/right) but the gsm signal is really better !

Although a good idea in theory, I have tried it, and although it doesn't improve signal strength by a LOT, it improves at least by a bit. Of course, others may have varying levels of success, if you use different wire, the method of connection etc.
However, it is quite possible to damage the antenna pins, so you have been warned.

Exactly, you're right.
In my case I've improved the mobile signal and the wifi.
It's necessary to 'drive' correctly the pins. Situate of a correct form the cable in the pin. And NEVER join the cables each other (wifi cable with signal cable, etc)

Also, the signal strength icon is totally UNRELIABLE as a true indicator of signal strength, unless you change it to display the actual measured value in units ASU. (Which can then be converted to dBm, and you can work out the gain of your antenna, relative power etc...)
did, the guide, mobile is awesome i download with over 1.5 mbs but wifi is very poor, first i had max wifi now only 3 lines.

Yes, after several days of testing my trick I may accept the following results, also according to your comments:
* This trick improves, I can say, much, the carrier signal. There's no drops!
* But wifi signal is improved a (little) bit. I've discovered that the culprit is the Broadcom chip (if you cap the wifi antennae with/without back cover the wifi signal is OVER). In my case the Wifi isn't stable but the signal improves 1 or 2 lines.
In the following days I'll try to improve the wifi trick, in order to know if my trick makes effect OR it's a factory problem.

My theory is that the Wifi chip is (a bit) defective, therefore my trick doesn't make so much effect on Wifi-side.
But in general words, I'm glad that my trick made effect on your phone.

Jjajajajajaajjaja .... The cable is from an old AC-to-DC adapter, it's like conductive wire.
At making the trick, make sure that the cable you use is thin, in order to the back cover puts fine into the phone.

You can try to match Radio and RIL through GetRIL app.
Otherwise, in this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202867) there are many radio versions.
You can try several radios and rils and see which of them is better for you.
PD: It seems that you have the HTC Sensation TMOUS (T-Mobile), find in that post the "TMO dish".
In general lines, follow the instructions.

Problem with tablet WiFi

My shiny new PiPo U8 has terrible WiFi, and it can only see the router within a couple of metres. Things improved when I set the router to 5GHz. Before that it was around half.
The tablet is in an all metal chassis which seems like an oversight. However, I find it hard to believe the company would release a tablet with such poor wireless performance.
Is it likely that a firmware update could improve things? I think I've read of such things before.

Do you have that problem only with that router? have you checked with another wifi source?
If you have landline wireless phones at 2.4ghz they can mess some wifi adapters as well, check that.
it can be due to a miss connection of the wireless antenna inside the device, there are many possible causes.
Also it can be related do kernel/driver issues on your device, that would be solved by some mods.

Same problem at work. Earlier all the guys with Android phones used WiFi Analyser to show the local WiFi networks. They each got over a dozen and the main one was at -90. My tablet got the same network one at -65 and no other networks. Turning the tablet could add or loose around 5 units.
I suspect it may be a badly connected or badly positioned antenna. I've been trying to find out how to open the tablet up in order to check. Apart from this major issue, it seems like a great device and a real bargain. Elsewhere online there are reports of very good WiFi performance with this tablet.

You know that -65db is actually better than -90db right?
Check if your device is at 2.4ghz Wifi band, and not at 5Ghz as most of the public wifi router are 2.4ghz.

there's a setting on the phone which you can choose 2Ghz, 5Ghz and automatic. choose automatic.. if it doesn't work reset your modem and press the WPS.
Unfortunately some tablets are designed poorly where they impair WiFi/GPS/3G signals. A prime example is the Asus TF300 tablet.
Try using some apps in the appstore like Wifi Booster

Hey at45, I also took my u8's back off tho check the antenna. It was connected and while the back was off it got great reception. Now to my question, just to be sure the antenna is the small co-axial cable coming from near the power button and going to the area by the speaker, correct? Also does anyone know where I could get a stick-on antenna that I could maybe mount on the back and connect to my antenna lead? I think this would turn this really good tablet into a great one.

For me wifi is medium to good - not as good as the laptop but not as cruel as some others described it - so there might be different versions.
If you're already as far as attaching an external antenna, why don't you cut out part of the cover and replace it with some nice piece of plastic? Might actually look better than an external antenna...

[Q] Poor WLAN sensitivity with Photon Q

Hi,
yesterday my brand new Photon Q arrived, which - after doing the SIM mod - hopefully will replace my Sony Xperia Pro.
While playing around with the Photon there was some thing that disappointed me a lot:
The sensitivity of WLAN is very poor. I own 6 android devices with WLAN, and the Photon has the poorest WLAN sensitivity of all.
Using it about 10 m away from my router, through a thin wall of bricks, it tells me connection rates of about 2 MBit only (varies from 1 - 5 MBit).
My Xperia Pro shows - at the same place - connection rates from 60 to 65 MBit!
What are your expierences with WLAN on your Photon Q devices - compared to other devices you own?

P.S.: 2 m away from the router the speed is 60-65 MBit too, so maybe I have an issue with the antenna of the photon Q?

Although this is pretty old, I feel like answering to it, since there never has been any answer.
What was it, that caused your poor WLAN? I guess, the guys who do the SIM mod, when they cut the small gap the inner cover where you insert the SIM later, they sometimes damage the antenna in that spot, which may be the WLAN antenna. What do you think?
I have a SIM-modded PQ, but no problems with wi-fi.When I disaśembled PQ I haven't seen anything antenna-like (wires, fractal mazes) on the motherboard...
The back piece of the phone that holds the speaker and camera flash also contains the antennas. On the bottom there is a piece of black tape that I'm pretty sure covers one. Maybe this piece was damaged where an antenna is located?

That's correct. It holds all sorts of antennas, and on the back of the battery there must be the NFC antenna, right?
The seller, who modded the phone now told me, that at the bottm, where he made the SIM slot, there is the GSM antenna, not the WLAN one. So, today I'll get to open it and have a look, what else looks disordered. Maybe some plug on the mainboard or some of the antenna contact is bad. And just in case - I have one more cover from another PQ.
But if all this doesn't help - I'm grateful for more ideas
Yes, on the back of battery that's NFC antenna. Dismounting PQ is quite easy, but you have to have a T5 torx screwdriver.
I know how to unscrew the cover and even the mainboard of the PQ and I have precise tools.
Having done so and having replaced the cover with the slightly damaged antenna by another one where everything is intact - I experience the same weak WLAN It says 1 MBit/s in 2m distance or up to 20 MBit/s, when I am 10cm next to the access point. What else can be wrong or damaged?
If the cover is ok, maybe connectors to PCB are dirty/damaged (but you've probably already checked it). And how about another router? Maybe the one you're using is damaged or "doesn't like" PQ?
Thanks for the ideas, but from what I can see, they look good and clean and bent the right way to make safe contact And yes I tries other access points. I tried with my Droid4 providing a hotspot, my tablet, at my family's house, my girlfriend's, at work, at home... It's the same everywhere: very close or up to 3 meters, no obstacles, I have signal, but 1 or 6 MBit/s only, Further away or a door in between it's gone.
Can Android (CM 12.1 / 5.1.1) cause this, or must there be a hardware issue? How likely is it that these kind of problems are caused by a broken WLAN chip rather than an antenna problem?
I bought it in this condition from a guy who modded it (SIM mod)

Flash stock if you'd like to rule out issues with CM - although I doubt it, definitely sounds like a hardware issue.
I returned the phone to the seller, it was definitely something wrong with the hardware. I ordered a fully working board from another seller, since I still had a damaged Photon Q anyway, SIM modded it myselt and got everything working now, incl. GSM and WLAN. Thanks here.
