[Q] Shut down problem - HTC Sensation

Probably a year ago I was using custom ROMs and kernels on my Sensation Z710e and there was no problem then I decided to go back to stock ROM, firmware and everything so factory reset everything and updated normally to Android 4.0.3 and Sense 3.6.
Everything was okay till two weeks ago. My phone started to shut down sometimes (not always) when I use 3G internet connection or speak to the phone. It wasn't that frequent first but time to time is it started to happen more often. Foe example when I use the flash or use 3G or talk to phone or run apps even when I just press the wake up button. First I think is was heat because most of the time it was hot before shut down but then I realized it happens without the heat too, I just dim the screen and bum! shut down. I changed the battery but nothing changes still shuts down.
Last thing I tried was taking the SD card off and that worked. Without the SD card it doesn't shut down. Still heats up but no shut down so i formatted the SD card ant connected it to phone and again it shuts down. I am going slightly mad please help me!

I had a similar problem too. Apps gapps would just crash, phone would go off even with battery at 50%. I made a backup of the SD card files and formatted it, restored the files and they stopped crashing. For the heating, this came on every time I switched to 3G or ran heavy games. For this I moved from stock ROM and flashed CM10 JB 4.2.2. I'm yet to experience any issues.
I don't know if it will stop the random shut down, but you can try this and let us know

[Q] My phone keeps turning off.

My phone will randomly turn off out of nowhere. Earlier today I had 17% battery and it just turned off instantly. I turned it back on and had 87% battery. About 10 minutes later it instintly turned off again and when I turned it on I had 25% battery. It's getting really annoying. I never had this problem before, nor have I ever dropped it.
Is there something wrong with the pins on the back of the case or something?
Thanks in advanced for the replys.

i had this same issue, for me it helped to move all my apps back to my SD card and reformat my sd card. Since then it happend once again and that was after i dropped my phone and my sd card unmouted. but besides that occasion havent had it for about a three week now.
might be related to moving apps to sd card, not sure do if this actually started the problems for me.
I m on stock ROM and i live in europe
I've got the same problem since about a week, phone randomly turning off. Though never when i'm using it, alsways when the phone is in standby mode, including the strange battery level jumps. I thought it was an app so i did a hard reset, but the turning off remained. I switched from Sense to Launcherpro, still no change.
My phone runs on stock rom, 2.3.4, Sense 3.0, Kernel 2.6.35.13
This weekend i'll backup my SD-card and reformat it, if this helps i'll let you know.

Been there, done that; problem still exists... I have tried a new battery new software (factory reset and hard reset in the repair centre), boardsap, other simcard, other sd card... The problem still is there, I am trying to get a new phone. The problem is the phone ... My question is is this only a normal sensation problem or is this also a problem on the Sensation XE?
My phone is starting to show the same symtons again. Overnight it also has shut down. So i guess the sd format did not get rid of the problem. But on my phone it definitively made it less frequent. As before the format i had it 5 times a day and now i have it once a 2 days. Probably will get worse overtime as the last time i had it.

Let me know if u succeed, i contacted HTC today and they told me to factory reset my phone. Not looking forward to that, do. Might do it next week.
forgot to ask, did HTC give u those out of warranty our did u buy them yourself?
Let me ask you a question. Have any of you polished your covers to chrome? I have had the same issue of my phone turning off in my holster, but only when I have my polished case on it. When I put my spare one that has not been touched, the phone works flawlessly. Not sure if there is some weird static buildup that is shorting the phone. Also, to get it to turn back on, I have to pull the battery first.
I had the same problem on my Sensation, turning off randomly (not reboot). And the battery would display wrong reading once it is back on. Initially I thought this was due to bad rooting or a custom ROM issue, I restored back to stock and right there on the language selection screen on first start and without the SD card, it went off. That made me sure it was a problem something else. I thought then it would be due to bad charges in the battery, used different charger to charge, didn't work, then I replaced the battery, somehow the problem stopped and when I insert back my old battery the problem still didn't come back. I don't have an explanation to this behavior. It works fine now.
That sounds weird, I didn't polish my back to chrome... And I also do not need to pull my battery to turn it back on. A few times I had that it turned of and it would directly turn of again after it was restarted (home screen loaded). The only way to get out of that was to hook it up to the charger.

It's really odd. I can't even use the phone any more.
When I turn it on, as long as the screen stays on it will not turn off.
Once I lock it and put it in my pocket, about 40 seconds later it shuts off. This isn't just powering down, it just instantaneously shuts down. I also can't turn the device back on no matter how many times I press power, I have to physically pull the battery and put it back in to turn it on.
One more thing to add: My girlfriend smacked my phone out of my hand once accidentally and the case doesn't click in. It stays in place but if you hold the case and attempt to take it off it falls off. I'm thinking it could possibly be a problem regarding the pins, but from what I know the pins only control the screen.
Edit: One last thing, when it's connected to my computer and being charged it never shuts down.

I had this same problem two days ago. Left work and my phone just shut off while in my pocket. I was running sense-o-maniac Desense 3.5. It continued this behavior for the next day. Also my battery was showing random charge percentages. There were two issues"
1. I was had used the battery calibrator app from the market to erase my bat stats - problem - it kept erasing my battery stats.
2. I was using set CPU and after reading many dev forums about such issues, I realized that setting the idle below 384 mhz, it causes the phone to random reboot.
Once I conducted a complete wipe and flashed MIUI I was good. no issues.
My Suggestion: Try a complete wipe, then Android Rev HD wipe, then reflash, Wipe cache, Davlick Cache, Fix permissions, then reboot. Drain the battery, then recharge to 100% and wipe bat stats

@anari101: I'm a big fan of custom roms, but currently my sensation's still running a stock rom. I'd rather not void the guarantee at the moment by flashing it as the phone isn't functioning properly. If i can't fix this problem without flashing a custom rom, i can return it to HTC and hope for a repair or a new device/battery...
Anybody got any other ideas?
i also dont want to root a phone that might have problems.
I did not do any factory reset yet, but the problem is comming back now i have once a day it just shuts down. The last time when i picked it up and pressed the power butten the screen was white for a split second. However if i look at my history of battery monitor widget it stopped recording an houre earlier. clueless to why this happens.
If your phone is rooted, I agree with anari - use current widget and battery calibration to re-calibrate your battery. Let phone charge all the way and then some like another 2 hours. Use battery calibration to get rid of batterystats.bin. Let battery completely drain (Hopefully it doesnt shut off in the process). Definitely seems like something is wrong with your ROM's battery settings.
If you dont have your phone rooted. Have you received any updates lately? If a factory reset didnt help - go to your local Tmobile and just have them ship you a new phone. Not worth dealing with the issue and they can get you a new phone within a couple days.
EDIT: If you have NOT factory reset your phone. You can try to copy all data off your SD card, reformat it. Insert it, let the phone recognize and set it up then add everything back on. If that doesn't work, factory reset (after using Astro to backup all apps). If THAT doesnt work, go get a new phone.
I am having this same problem. Mine always happens when I take my phone out of my pocket after it's been sitting for a while. It also seems that my battery is always around 30-40 percent. It will unlock then just turn off. I turn it back on and after about 30 seconds it turns back off. The only way I can get it to stay on is plugging it in to the charger for a couple of minutes after turning it on and it won't do it again for a while. I don't know what it is but I'm thinking battery or SD card.

Phone shuts off all the time

Hey everyone, thanks for looking at this and hopefully helping me out. I'm new to rooting my phone and installing new roms and stuff, but I researched about as much as I could for about a week before I even rooted.
Now I've moved on and installed a new rom (CM7). Before installing I used clockwork and formated the /system, /data, /cache, and dalvik. At first everything was ok, but after about 15 minutes it turned off. I read up on battery problems, so kept my phone plugged in all weekend (got up to 4.196V-ish, with 0mA in or out) then deleted the battery file, rebooted, unplugged the phone and let it drain completely (even while it still had a charge it would turn off randomly but I figured it would be ok). After it was completely drained I completely charged it again and it still randomly turns off.
At first I thought maybe it was just the rom, but no one else seems to have the same problem as me (that I can find), so I downloaded an ICS rom to try that. Same problems. So far I have done the following to try and find out WTF is going on...
Installed Elixr to see battery drainage (sitting at main screen doing nothing its roughly -8mA, but right after boot or opening a program it jumps to -300mA to -480mA)
Done NUMEROUS battery pulls (with and without deleting the battery config file)
Switched ROMS
Any help would be amazing
PS: Before rooting or flashing a new mod my phone would shut off on its own, but only once a week, maybe. Now it turns off as soon as I unlock my sim card. However, it doesn't turn off at all if I have it plugged in.

Well, if you were having this issue before the rooting took place, this very well may be hardware related. There are a few things I recommend before the dreaded unroot and send back to manufacturer route (assuming the phone is under warranty still). It's been proven or at least shown that battery calibration (the whole charge to 0Ma and then fully discharge and then recharge) is a pipe dream.
I would first say find out if the CM7 ROM you're using is OCing or UVing, while you may see some people OCing to 1.3 or higher and UVing -75, not all phones are created equal in capabilities and some phones will randomly freeze/turn off if they don't like your OC and UV settings. I would also suggest flashing a different ROM to see if this problem persists. Cleardroid is what I recommend just to get an idea if it is in fact a OC or UV problem as I believe cleardroid is set up to default stock settings.
You can also try a new battery, I have heard/read/seen that bad batteries can cause reboots. Again though if this was an issue you were sometimes experiencing before, you may have hit the tip of the iceberg on a hardware issue and its finally starting to show now. Hope this helps.

I guess the issue is with the battery itself. Try getting a new battery. I heard some guys experiencing the same and sorting things out replacing the battery....
Leave the charger plugged in. If it doesn't reboot then that will let you know most likely it is the battery.

That was my thoughts exactly. However, if the ROM or kernel or whatever is set to shut off the phone at a certain reading of discharge from the battery, ie -500mA, this could also be the problem.
I thought it could have been a problem with the phone as well, but before it would shut off on its own MAYBE once a month. 90% of those I attributed to overloading the phone, closing facebook, opening the internet, starting to load a webpage then open a new txt I just recieved while the phone was still vibrating type things.
Now it still feels like it's just quitting on me, it never turns off while the screen is locked or while its charging. So far after the new ROM it has shut off when I place a call, when I receive a call, clicking on a notification, opening the messaging app, clicking download in the market, and my favorite when I unlock it from sleep.
I will download a different rom right now and try it. Just to double check this is what I've been doing to install a new rom... I boot my phone into recovery (vol- and power), go to recovery from the boot screen (opens clockworkmod), scroll down to mounts and storage, have it format /system, /data and /cache, go back to wipe data/factory reset, then install zip from sdcard, select the rom and go... I know some roms require inspiremod, should I still install this if I'm USING an inspire??
Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it
If it does turn out to be the battery or you just decide to get a new one to test it out. I recommend these, they are awesome and the only thing anyone should try besides HTC factory replacements. Good luck and I hope this works out for you.
Anker Batteries
i only skimmed this. but cleaning battery contacts can help also check the side door, sometimes that can cause issues as well. air can out everything and clean metal contacts with rubbing (ipa) alcohol.
So I installed cleardroid. Once again everything worked fine for the first 10-15 minutes and then the shutdowns started again, always when making the phone do something (unlocking, clicking a notification, opening a program, etc) but never when the phone is charging.
I'll clean off every bronze or gold contact I can find but I think I might be fighting a lost cause lol. Three different ROMS, all with the same problem leads me to believe its a hardware issue. Since all the chips in these phones are all small and use multilayer boards I won't be able to replace anything myself so I see a new phone in my near future.
Thanks guys!
If it doesn't do it when its chargeing then it is the battery. I had bought my inspire from someone and it was having those issues ordered a new HTC stock battery from newegg for like $12 and has been working perfectly since then and honestly if you want the best battery rom absolution is the rom you should check out. It's a non sense rom but again I'd just buy a new battery. I had mine timed it'd reset at 92% 74% and 49% xD

hmm, I would say try a new battery before getting a new phone. Worst case scenario is that you spent $15 to learn you need a new phone as opposed to spending $100+ on a new phone...this is of course assuming you want to keep the inspire and not just looking for a reason to get upgrade ahaha
I agree. It still sounds like a battery issue.
I would agree this definitely sounds like an internal short in the battery. Sounds like it's shutting off whenever it gets a significant load on it. Try a new battery first.
I had a similar issue though I was tweaking the CPU. Learned my lesson.

Yeah, Id bet money that its a bad battery. I had this same exact issue with my Inspire. If it shuts off more in low reception areas but it isn't shutting off when plugged in, its definitely the battery. I would try to find someone with an Inspire and try switching them batteries and see if it stops.
If I tried to use the flash with my camera, the phone would shut off. My phone would randomly reboot or turn off. ATT told me they had "some" bad batches of batteries. My phone was still under warranty so ATT sent me a new battery. All the problems went away!
The battery door on the Inspire becomes wonky the more you open it, I was having a problem like yours, new battery and new door has me going good.

Randomly shutting off

For some reason my sensation appears to have gotten into the habit of randomly turning itself off, and I can't figure out why.
It's rooted, and was using InsertCoin's GB rom for a bit until ICS roms got more stable. I've tried InsertCoin's ICS rom and also Virtuous Inquisition, and had been using the 3.24 firmware. I'm also using an anker battery that's three months old.
I first noticed the random shut downs on the ICS InsertCoin rom, but I'd been using it for a few weeks before it started happening, no apps had been changed or updated at around that time, it simply started shutting off. No menus or dialogs, just an instant loss of power, and could happen at any time, in my pocket when sleeping, in a call, or otherwise active in my hand. Totally random. I could turn it back on, but more often that not it'd just die again within a few seconds of finishing the bootanimation. It appeared to happen most when the battery level was below say 50%. The only thing that seemed to stop it at the time was plugging it into a power source, as then it'd be fine.
Thinking it could have been down to the rom's power management stuff (and me getting sick of the frequent sense reboots anyway), I then tried another rom, Virtuous Inquisition. And as soon as I'd flashed that and set all my apps up again (backups created while using the ICS InsertCoin rom right before flashing the new rom), it ran perfectly for weeks. So that seemed to suggest it was the old rom to blame.
Except recently the random shutdowns have started again, exactly the same behaviour as before. I then thought it could have been the SebastianFM undervolted kernels if my phone didn't like being undervolted, but flashing the regular ones made no difference either. I then found the new 3.30 firmware was available a few days ago, so flashed that. The phone instantly ran a bit quicker and had better mobile and gps reception, and it didn't seem to shut down randomly again. Until today that is.
What the hell could it be? It can't really be software because I've tried different roms, though they're probably based off the same leak. But if it was the rom, why haven't more people reported this issue? I've also tried different kernels and firmware, which haven't helped stop it shutting off either. I've checked the battery terminals and there isn't a loose connection, but could it be the battery itself at fault? Thinking about it, I fitted the anker battery before this started happening, but I'd had it a few weeks before the shutdowns started happening. I've not tried putting the standard battery back in yet as I quite like my battery lasting a day, but I suppose it's worth a shot if for some reason my anker is a dud. Is there any way I could check it?
What are your thoughts? I really want to get to the bottom of it...

Hi,
Do you have any apps on your sd card?
Apparently,this can cause problems.
Go to settings-->apps-->on sd card and untick anything there...
I do at the moment, but I've tried with all apps on internal memory and it made no difference, the shutdowns still happened. In fact I've found no issues with apps2sd on ICS roms whatsoever.
I had the EXACT same issue with ALL ROMS, GB and ICS. Like you it would begin when the battery was below 50% and everything:/ I just sent it to HTC the other day hopefully it gets fixed. And I doubt it was the battery because i was using the stock battery.
I was thinking about opening a thread about this were everyone would post their setup and every detail possible to get to the bottom of this. But i decided not to since it was most likely a hardware problem and would get flamed since there are already countless threads about someone complaining about this.
Well the stock battery is charging back up now anyway so I'll give it a go. I really don't want to have to send it back though given it's rooted, s-off, etc etc. I don't fancy trying to get it back to stock just to see if they might possibly fix it.
same here
Exactly same problem here with virtuous inquisition 3.5.0 and an banker battery...
A few days on with the standard battery, and no random shut downs yet. It's lasting me a day with moderate use too.
I have the same problem before. Sent back to Bell, and they can't fix it. Then I found this app called Captivate Keep Alive. It take a bit of the battery life and ram, but it solve the problem. The phone never shutdown by itself any more. Hope that helps.

damn, this is a good fix but uninstalled because the ongoing notification. I'm not buying the pro version when the developers might come up with a fix in their roms
Same problem here, the problem was more often with the anker battery than with the original battery.
Now i'm back to S-ON and stock roms, it isn't turning off anymore but the problem went over in rebooting...
Only thing i have to do is find an Vodafone RUU for the netherlands , because it was branded and then I will send it back to HTC...
Really annoying... sometimes people ask why they always get your voicemail -> phone turned off in my pocket again...

Unfortunately my issue was the other way round. Mine used to do it below 50%, not when fully charged. It also never happened when it was plugged in. It isn't down to the CPU going to sleep, as I could be using the phone at the time it happened, literally just as if the battery was pulled. Then if I turned it back on it would repeatedly shut off again, until plugged back in.
It's still fine on my standard battery by the way.
my dad on bell is experiencing this issue with his Sensation "4g" lol, with stock battery stock rom s-off stock stock stock.
constantly turning off in pocket, never heard of it happening while in use. waiting for ICS update, if it doesnt fix going for warranty.
Yup, if it's not the original battery, then that problem can happen quite often. Not just phones, it's other electronics also. I had a MacBook, I bought a battery from a third party and the computer shut off randomly. Same with an Asus laptop I bought afterwards and changed the battery.
Ok so I've been having this same problem myself since Christmas.. it started happening on my original battery and on various firmwares ,kernels and rims.. so I bought an anker battery..
It was fine then for a week or two but started happening again.. I read oh about 10 different threads on this subject and what works for me to stop this is switching 3g gsm mode from auto to 3g only.. haven't had a problem while this is switched.. coverage in my house isn't great so I hope there is a permenant fix for this soon
Exactly the same problem.. Turns off when in pocket, hand and even when kept aside .
And Everything's stock. Battery, version etc etc.
Still can't figure out what the problem is.
It can also happen with a standard battery if it's faulty. Get HTC to send a replacement.
Mine is still having it... really annoying, even with the new ICS. Everything is stock now.
I also want to send it back to HTC, but I think they are going to test it first... chance is high that it wont shut off then -> phone back and the problem is still there..... That would be an endless story
have you guys seen this thread:

Seems kind of silly to have two parallel conversations on the same topic...
I had this exact problem on a stock battery with any rom. The fix that worked for me was changing the network settings from Auto WCDMA/GSM to WCDMA only. It was something to do with transition between 2g and 3g.
Bizarre problem and I hope there is a better fix available soon!
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
Not happy, I thought it was the battery but it's started doing it again, even with the standard battery instead.
Just had a look, and on my ics ROM I can't find the option to change the wcdma settings, so I can't try that. Not sure how that could cause it though, because it can even shut off while showing the boot animation! The only thing that seems to stop it is plugging it in, meaning it was no longer using the battery. Hence my assumption that the battery was at fault, but I've tried three different batteries on it now and it happened with any of them. Not much chance that all of them have exactly the same fault.
It can't be a loose connection since if it was I wouldn't be able to turn the phone back on in the first place, so what the hell could it be? I don't think I ever had the issue until going to ics, but I've tried different ROM's and the issue didn't go away. I've tried different kernels over time, and also upgraded the firmware and radio a couple of times too. None of which cured it, so I can't see how any of them could be the cause since it happens on all of them.
Any ideas?

restarts and SD card drop issues

good morning!!
I have the Sensation 4G with a 32 gig Sandisk micro SD card running Revelation Rom (updated to latest version) that has started giving me a significant amount of problems with restarts. I also have a relatively new Anker battery that has easily doubled/tripled the usable time of the phone, and i don't think it is causing the problem.
The problem first started off when i would press the power button and it wouldn't instantly wake up the display. it would take a few seconds then the display would wake up. Restarts would sometimes help with that, but it never really went away. Then it would all of a sudden start dropping my SD card, often in the middle of an app running which would lock it up and it would either restart on its own, or i would have to pull the battery to do so. each time it restarts on its own, it will not mount the SD card. i have to restart it multiple times to get it to mount.
I don't think its the ROM b/c I have been running it for months without issue. The only other software change that was recent was my SU binary was out of date and i updated that. It really feels like a hardware issue to me. like the back of the case is grounding out somehow or it could just be that the phone is 3 years old and at the end of its life. Has anyone else experienced issues like this?
I am unlocked, but with S-ON. i am using the most recent stable version of 4EXT as well
Thanks!

[Q] HTC Explorer problems...

Hello
Yesterday I was trying to migrate to a 32GB SD card from a 8GB SD card and I thought I had bricked my HTC Explorer (I don't recall what I did or what happened, but I was running Flyrom v4, and the phone all of a sudden wouldn't turn on) - I was getting 3-7 vibrations and nothing else when I tried to power the device on. I found a thread here about resolving the same issue on a Wildfire S and I mistakenly flashed the rom linked in that thread, following the instructions in that thread, not realising I should be using a rom for the Explorer (if a similar rom exists?).
I'm not even sure what was described in that thread worked but my device suddenly turned on again after following that advice - something like copy the rom to the SD card, wait 2-3 minutes whilst holding vol up+power, then press vol up, then wait another 2-3 mins.
I've now gone back to a locked/unrooted official rom state by using the RUU for the HTC Explorer because I thought doing so would resolve the issues. However since I've done what I did to try to resolve what I thought was a brick, but even before using the RUU, I've developed further problems with the phone.
What is currently happening is that the phone is heating up more than usual, especially while on charge via USB, and thus the battery stops charging, due to the inbuilt safety feature - the phone gets incredibly warm all round, even on the screen, it didn't before.
Also this morning when my battery did have some charge left in it (approx 50%) the phone would turn itself off after about 3.5 minutes and I had to pull the battery and reinsert to get it to boot up again.
I'm not sure why the phone is now heating up so much or what is/was causing it to turn off after 3.5 minutes.
I've tried checking CPU frequencies, suspecting the Wildfire rom I flashed messed with the firmware somehow at a level that hasn't been resolved by using the RUU, using SetCPU (device is not currently unocked/rooted so I can't set anything) but they seem normal, at 600/480 (this is what they've always been at since I got the phone?!), with governer on "ondemand" and the other option on "deadline".
I hoped flashing the RUU rom would resolve the problem(s) but it hasn't.
I don't have another battery to test (nor funds to buy one), but I don't see how it could be a battery fault when the whole phone is getting warm and everything was fine yesterday.
Please could someone advise me on what could be the cause of the issues I've now got with the phone and point me in the direction of a fix for these two issues (probably 2 parts of the same big issue), if there is one, as I can't use the phone unless it's plugged in via USB, which effectively renders it useless.
Really hope someone here can help otherwise I will either need to buy a new battery, or as I suspect will be the case, a new phone, and I have funds for neither.
Thanks in advance.
