[Q] Kernel Question - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
I recently rooted and installed the twrp recovery on my TF101 on stock ics rom.
Now I want to install a custom kernel but I don't know which is the best.
Can anyone help me to find the best solution?
Thanks in advance.

Depends which ROM you're using, KatKernel is a very popular and fast kernel, and TeamEOS4 is a fast ROM too (4.2.2)

Is the EOS rom fully working? What about bugs?
In my signature you can see which rom I am using. It is the latest official in my country.

You're still running ICS, TeamEOS is Jellybean the newest version of Android
There are some bugs, but not as many as stock ICS had
Read the main post with hints and tips and read some of the latest posts about the laetst build, I've been running EOS for a long time and love it, best my TF has ever run
EOS thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2063406
If you are not bothered about the latest ROM, EOS3 #81 with KatKernel is a very stable and fast build of Jellybean 4.1.2

Are there any known bugs? I can't find them.
Does the rom come with the kernel integrated? Or do I have to install it manually?
Also I can't find #81. Here http://goo.im/devs/teameos/roms/eos4/nightlies/tf101 the oldest is #82.
The latest 4.2.2 which number is? The last (#109)?

Known bugs are mainly in the comments, as things change with each build
EOS3 #81 is here (EOS4 starts #82)
http://goo.im/devs/teameos/roms/eos3/nightlies/tf101/
All ROMs come with their own kernels, but you generally find the separate kernels are much better than the stock ones, EOS & KatKernel is definitely a good match
There are two branches of EOS4, Nightlies and Previews, you'll find the links to each in post 2 of the EOS4 thread, explanations of each are there too
Personally if you want a 99.99% bug free ROM, try EOS3 #81 & KatKernel #69 and Gapps (Google Apps)
Main bug in EOS4 is lag on the homescreen scrolling
Workaround is Hold power button until menu appears and choose to hide NavBars = Smooth scrolling

So the main bug is just the scrolling! Nice.
I will try firstly the eos4 and then the other if the first has bugs.
Should I keep their kernel? Or do you recommend to flash another?
I want the rom to be stable because some days I leave it to my mother to play angry birds and I don't want it to get stuck. :/
On my hands it can be a bit laggy

Yea the main issue is just slightly laggy scrolling but it only affects the homescreens, inside app draw or any other app it is very smooth
I suggest KatKernel with any TeamEOS ROM, #103 is the latest for EOS4
http://downloads.timduru.org/android/tf101/K.A.T/kernel/Tim_KatKernel_103_JB4.2_Lidpatch.zip
#69 is the latest for EOS3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1524386&stc=1&d=1354292441

Thank you man! I will try it tomorrow and post what happened!!

Man in the download page of eos4 the 109 seems to be the latest version as it says 20th of April. The 103 says 26th of March. Are you sure that 103 is the latest?
I installed the 109 nightly. Now testing. Seems to have an issue with video playback. The same file that was playing with the stock rom, now says "the video cannot be played".

#109 Nightly is the latest ROM
#103 KatKernel is the latest KatKernel
KatKernel is a much better kernel than stock
Clear cahce and dalvik cache, Flash the ROM, then clear both caches, then flash the Kernel and clear caches again, then flash Gapps and clear caches again, then reboot, that's how I always do it
MX Video Player & ARMv7 Codecs Pack plays just about anything for me, you might need to switch to software decoding when the video fails to play using hardware decoding though, same with certain audio tracks if you get no sound on the video
Grab the Kat Audio enhancer app too, that has a load of goodies for EOS4

Thanks man! You are great!
Something more, I have two accounts on the tablet with 4.2.2 but when I install apps from the main, they are not appearing in the second.
What can I do? Do I have to reinstall them from the other account?

I haven't had a chance to play around with adding extra accounts yet so you'll have to figure that one out

Google has changed on Android 4.2 for tablets. You can share a tablet with others. If you create a second user. It will bring you to the setup just like a new device. For example if you installed a custom launcher on first user, it will not appear on the second. So all homescreen customizations, apps and also accounts will be seperated.

Custom Kernels from 3.1 sources DO NOT WORK with this so it's your own fault if you try and it breaks! There is now at least one kernel that works on 3.2. Please report feedback on compatibility.
I'm not sure whether all the built in apps are working ok as deodexing this was a ***** so please test to destruction.
I'll be adding all of the features from previous builds when I get time and also fixing any bugs reported in this thread.
To Do:
Deodex
Optimise and Zipalign apk's
Add init.d Support
Tweak scripts
Get AnyConnect working
Add PowerMods
Add Dock Battery Meter
Update pre installed apps to latest versions
Add WIFI Ad-Hoc Support
Bugs found so far (These may also be present in the stock ROM)
Weather Widget - Last update time shows PM 0:38 (Should be PM 12:38)
Flash framerate problem still present for some. There doesn't seem to be anything I can do with the ROM to fix the issue as it has to do with /data
Problems for some with Videos/Pictures not loading properly. Backup and wipe to see if the problem persists. - Appears to be inherited from the Asus Stock ROM
I'm uploading a beta release, everything form my previous ROMs is now in. I have more to do like play about with VPN stuff but this is of the standard of my previous builds atm.
I've also added a zipalign on boot script and an automatic module loader so cifs, voodoo and hopefully tun as well work out the box.
Zipalign on boot script donated by the Xoom Tiamat team and written for Bugless Beast by Pete.
Automatic module loader script was also from the Xoom team but I have modified that to suit my needs.
Also a special thanks to Tera Tike for the new boot animation sequence.
To all patiently putting up with my rubbish UK upload speeds...
I'll update the thread title when the upload completes so you don't have to keep checking in the thread. f5f5f5f5
Why alpha? Whats the main bug in this rom?
Can this be used on WW versions? Or only US?
Sounds pretty Awesome!
Alpha version? So, still buggy...

Installing now. I am coming from Clemsyn Rom and Kernel Combo and did a full wipe. Since this is a full package I hope it works. Thanks for you fast work on this Roach.
Flashed it, working great.
Anyconnect from Cisco still doesn't work, but VPN Connections does!
I think the problem with Anyconnect lies with Busybox. It the seems the software tries to install some files, but fails somehow.

See here for changes. Kernel is stock so far
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041502
Just installed it, apparently all the flashing process and loading the ROM was smooth and OK. So far I have noticed 2 issues: Quadrant benchmark cannot be run it gets stuck and freezes , the system tries to force fit to screen and also landscape mode, maybe this is the cause, the other is that I cannot play .mkv 720P or 1080P files that I used to be able to play before, the first video I tried to play oddly enough it offered me to start playing from where it was stopped last time(had memorized it apparently) but then it told me it couldn't play it, this was with the stock video player, then I tried it with Mobo player resulting in the same error: not able to play. This was tested with and without mini-hdmi connection to an external LCD TV. I will keep on testing it and reporting any issue. Maybe I will flash the netformer 1.5 kernel to see what happens....
I installed it and it boots fine. But 1.6 was smoother and the inputlag is really bad. I have just wiped cache and dalvik
Edit: ok, just let it settle a bit and now it runs great. Thank you for your work
wewt!
THANK YOU! great work once again roach ^_^ ; looks like my summer vacation has been cut short....lol

Good for you then! I tried several times and in the best case it showed a couple of graphical tests but stopped and did not finish, also I could not just get out of that application had to press the HOME icon.
Flashed Netformer and its not working. I get juust a lots of coloured stripes a croos the screen. Not possible to see anything. Going back to Alpha kernel and further testing
Sweet, quick work roach,i just got home, gonna try it now.
Edit:Works great so far,no problems so far, changed the wallpaper, connected to wifi ok,scrolls smooth and fast, internet browser seems to work fine,i dont see any big improvements or changes in this asus update,it looks and runs just like 3.1 to me,but then again im not technically smart,so i dont know what os improvements this brought for development.

[Q] All AOSP based roms running poorly on B70

It does not seem to be widespread for others but my TF101 is running poorly on all aosp based roms. Worst part is when banners appear in games like extreme skater. Games often slow down and the launcher scrolling gets pretty bad. I have 0 issues with Revolver 4 and Revolution HD 3.4.2. I tried harmony rev3 and guevor kernels and issues are always there. I tried cm9 nightly, Megatron, aokp etc. Tried with super wipe and factory reset, same thing.
Somebody as an idea of what I can try? I would like to run 4.0.4.
Thanks
(How can I delete my other post in the wrong forum?)
Have you tried the Gummy ROM or Steeldroid rom? They're aosp and actually really stable. I'd give them a shot with latest guevor/harmony
(Also sent report to mod to delete other thread for you, you can click the report triangle in the corner of the post to do this)

[Q] Looking for latest ROM

Hi,
What is the latest most updated ROM versions there is for TF101?
Did 4.2.2 JB came out already? Or is it still 4.1.2?
I'm still with 4.03 ICS by Revolver and there's not apparent update of this ROM brand.
I'm more interested in modified stock ROM's than CM based ROM's.
Thanks

Asus has not gone past 4.0.3 (build 9.2.1.27) and it has been over 6 months. I have heard rumors they have abandonned it.
If you want to go to JB, you will have to go with a CM, Paranoid Android, AOSP or AOKP build.
I will say this - IT IS SO WORTH IT! It is so much smoother and such.
I was running the TeamEOS 3 (4.1.X builds) and switched to the PA/CM10 hybrid last fall. Loved the PhabletUI over the tablet UI.
TeamEOS 4 came out with (4.2.X builds) and I jumped over to that. It is fully functoinal for what I use (including BT HID and GPS). No issues for me.
I had the 4.1.2 from MattmanWRX on my TF101 and showed it to a Stock Infinity user and he swore up and down my tablet was smoother and more fluid than his (with 2x the horsepower).
All of the 4.1.X and 4.2.X ROMs that I have run (TeamEOS, LiquidSmooth, MattmanWRX and the RaymanFX 4.2 0.8.0) had full keyboard dock support if you have that.
Keep in mind, 4.2.X is a PhabletUI, no tablet interface available. If you want the Tablet UI, stick with 4.1.X.
@frederuco
Thanks for the detailed reply. I had no idea they didn't go past 4.0.3.
Several of the main features that are important to me is fully functional HDMI output, Direct WiFi, Overclocking and playing HD content smoothly.
Can you tell which ROM will provide me with these function bug-free?
Thanks a bunch!

EOS4 will be a beast once its finished, for now if your just coming from stock id recommend EOS3 (with kat kernel #70), hd playback/ heavy 3d games are improved greatly on these roms only issue you may find is input lag on hdmi, this was my experience when trying hdmi yet havnt seen it reported in the threads by anyone else yet.

I cannot comment on WiFi Direct or HDMI, but OC to 1.4 is very good. Some tablets get RR and SoD with 1.5 and higher.
No issues with video playback.
My suggestion - backup using titanium backup, install TWRP from GooManager. Backup your current ROM, then install TeamEOS 4. Be sure to wipe cache, Davlik, format system and factory reset from TWRP.
Restore apps with TB and see if it works.
If not, wipe and restore your Revolver.

TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) is a different style of recovery. It is touch based, has a file manager and a terminal emulator in it. I like it because it can reliably access both internal and microSD storage (no SD or USB).
Also, nandroid backups grab the kernel (CWM on the TF101 do not backup the kernel).
TWRP 2.3.2.3 is required for Android 4.2 ROMs because of the new file structure for multiple users. It will flash fine the first time with other (and older TWRP) but when you update, your data starts getting in nested folders in the /sdcard/.
Another thing, when you go to wipe, ALL of the wipes are in one are instead of spread around like in CWM.
You can also set it up to flash up to 10 files at a time.
I will say that TWRP does not seem to like ARHD, but it has worked fine with Revolver, and all the other 4.1 and 4.2 ROMs I have tried.

I use HDMI (without audio so I can't confirm it works), it's overclocked to 1.5GHz and I'm playing 720p mkv scene releases in MX Player without issues. Can't say about Direct Wifi, I don't use that. All on Team EOS's latest 4.2.1 (haven't made the jump to 4.2.2 yet).
Guys, thank you so much for helping out. I will start to check these things out!

Thats exactly what im looking for. I have had little success playing 720p mkv on my device with no lag. I upgraded my TF101 last night to cyanogenmod 10 v6 and it worked great for a little while, even playing videos well with little to no lag. I played with it last night for a couple of hours and installed many apps and settings. I powered it down before i went to bed and now it will not get passed the unlock screen. Its completely unresponsive at the lock screen. Any Ideas? Do i need to flash it to another ROM?

Why would you install something as old as RaymanFX's CM10 v0.6?
Running that, I would recommend upgrading to something newer anyway. There has been updates to that CM10-ROM if you prefer something similar (see the nightly builds), and there has been CM10.1 builds which are equally stable and functional.
My CM10.1 is pretty good and does 720p just fine at 1.4GHz

After browsing the web last night for a while, as i am unfamiliar with android customization, i found a few instruction outlines that pointed me to repositories with builds. That was the newest build i could find on those repositories. I realize now that it is old and have learned a lot about the mods.
I will download the one you are suggesting and seeing how that goes. I appreciate your response!
Glad to hear that, that is the one thing that has not pleased me so far with my transformer. I really want to play 720p rips of movies/shows.

[Q] Which CM version works best?

So I'm trying to prolong the use of this tablet but keep it stable and quick, and I think CyanogenMod is the way to go. There are a number of versions available for it, with 10.0 being the last stable build that I can find. I flashed 10.0 and it was quick and stable, except for one major problem: the Google+ app just would not load no matter what, and by searching I found others had the same issues with no fix.
So I'm back to stock 4.1.2 JB now, which is fine but I'd rather move to CM if I can. I flashed the latest nightly, but was having major issues with Gapps closing and the Play Store wasn't even available (even though I flashed the correct Gapps package).
For those that are using CM, which version is the best to use? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!
Honestly, I use the CM11 builds and they are working great.

CM10.1 (based on 4.2.x) really great. I used it for the past few months.
Never give me problem. Of course you must install 2/20/13 JB Unified GApps.
Looking forward to try CM11 but having hard time with TWRP (big part) at the moment.

Another vote for CM11, but you do have to install BigPart. That isn't a big deal if you read carefully through the resource thread before proceeding. I'm certainly not a tech wizard (color TV and phones without dials were big deals when I was a kid, VCRs didn't come out until I was in college, and I was in my mid twenties when home computers just started to become widespread) and was able to run BigPart without trouble.
I got BigPart working successfully with no problems on the first go. Merely requires some reading and should work fine.
Break me off a piece of that Kit-Kat ROM!

[Q] Give a second life to my Nexus S

Hi,
I decided to post my own topic and not in the CM11 thread, because this is probably not a CM11 issue. As you know, the Nexus S has only 512MB of RAM including video. Mine has been having quite a lot of slowdowns (apps refreshes/restarts) for the past weeks. I am wondering what I could do to help it and avoid buying a new phone (no money and I still love that phone).
However now, there are few things that I can't do anymore.
- I can't listen to BeyondPod (podcasts) and receive/send SMS in Hangout. There's not enough RAM to run both apps and even when I am listening to BeyondPod, the SMS alert might not trigger when a SMS is received. This happens in few apps here and there.
- Sometimes, someone calls me and the screen stays black so I can't answer. Again, this is due to RAM usage.
- I use SwiftKey as keyboard and it can't take 30-45 seconds to load in some apps such as Chrome.
I am running CM11 Nightlies. I usually update CM11 once per 2 weeks with the lastest Nightly available. I don't wipe the entire configs, I just upgrade. It's been a while since I've wiped everything to be honest. I probably updated CM10 to CM11 without wiping the configs. This might be one thing to try but I am not sure if it would help to regain some RAM/juice. I am running the stock kernel of CM11. I know there are few kernels with a bigmem patch, but does it really work ?
As for launcher, I am running Apex Launcher as well with SwipePad. Greenify runs in the background and hibernate pretty much every apps it can. I don't have the Greenify donation package, so it won't hibernate on the system apps.
I am wondering if wiping everything and installing a stable version of CM11 (or another lighter ROM?) would help. I would use TItanium Backup to reinstall the apps and their settings. I wouldn't use TiB to push the configs of the ROM if CM11 is reinstalled. Would a kernel or ROM with bigmem patch a good idea ?
This would probably be a temporary fix, because apps and ROMs are asking for more and more CPU/RAM these days.
Thanks for any input,
Neo.
A clean flash isn't a bad idea, just backup your rom first.. Backup your apps/ data on your SD with titanium backup and then you can just restore them.. You could try my stable v1.1 script and use Guru (CM kernel with bigmem) or Devil and you will notice the improvement.. Also the CM m9 is a very nice rom.. Happy flashing..

Before I receive your answer, I did some research on my side as well. It turns out that I have downloaded your ROM (the Farewell edition) and the cn.fyodor AOSP 4.4.3 ROM. I decided to go ahead and install the AOSP ROM instead of yours. I wanted to try AOSP instead of CM, being a CM user for the past 2-3 years. While I was satisfied with the AOSP ROM for the past day or 2, I am now unsure if I will keep it. While performances are good compared to what I was used to, I have some issues. The videos in YouTube are lagging like crazy (although videos in VLC work fine) and the audio stutter sometimes. I listen to a lot of music and each few minutes, it will stutter for a split second. I never had that issue with CM11. Also, I can't find a kernel with bigmem on AOSP. There is the marmite kernel from bedalus which seemed promising, but everyone is having FC with the Google Play Store and BLN/BLD isn't working anymore on this kernel.
How does your ROM compare with CM11 ? I know yours is CM based. Is there less "bloatwares" in yours ? CM install lots of stuff (themes, bugs reporting, etc) and I don't want that. I prefer to use the Xposed Framework instead of a ROM with multiple settings that I don't use. Having a CM based ROM would be nice to be able to flash the Guru kernel.

It basically is CM11, a little less bloated, but similar feature set.. Give it a try, you can always flash another rom if it doesn't suite you.. Slim 5.1 is another favorite of mine, if you'd like to try that one you'll need to search their thread as it wasn't a public release..

It basically is CM11, a little less bloated, but similar feature set.. Give it a try, you can always flash another rom if it doesn't suite you.. Slim 5.1 is another favorite of mine, if you'd like to try that one you'll need to search their thread as it wasn't a public release..

Your "Farewell edition" is Kitkat 4.4.4 or 4.4.2 ? So that I can download the appropriate Gapps. I also understand that the Gapps you provide in your thread are a minimal package, so my Nexus S doesn't run out of space (which happened to me few months ago due to the new official Gapps package).
Thanks
