[Q] Give a second life to my Nexus S - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I decided to post my own topic and not in the CM11 thread, because this is probably not a CM11 issue. As you know, the Nexus S has only 512MB of RAM including video. Mine has been having quite a lot of slowdowns (apps refreshes/restarts) for the past weeks. I am wondering what I could do to help it and avoid buying a new phone (no money and I still love that phone).
However now, there are few things that I can't do anymore.
- I can't listen to BeyondPod (podcasts) and receive/send SMS in Hangout. There's not enough RAM to run both apps and even when I am listening to BeyondPod, the SMS alert might not trigger when a SMS is received. This happens in few apps here and there.
- Sometimes, someone calls me and the screen stays black so I can't answer. Again, this is due to RAM usage.
- I use SwiftKey as keyboard and it can't take 30-45 seconds to load in some apps such as Chrome.
I am running CM11 Nightlies. I usually update CM11 once per 2 weeks with the lastest Nightly available. I don't wipe the entire configs, I just upgrade. It's been a while since I've wiped everything to be honest. I probably updated CM10 to CM11 without wiping the configs. This might be one thing to try but I am not sure if it would help to regain some RAM/juice. I am running the stock kernel of CM11. I know there are few kernels with a bigmem patch, but does it really work ?
As for launcher, I am running Apex Launcher as well with SwipePad. Greenify runs in the background and hibernate pretty much every apps it can. I don't have the Greenify donation package, so it won't hibernate on the system apps.
I am wondering if wiping everything and installing a stable version of CM11 (or another lighter ROM?) would help. I would use TItanium Backup to reinstall the apps and their settings. I wouldn't use TiB to push the configs of the ROM if CM11 is reinstalled. Would a kernel or ROM with bigmem patch a good idea ?
This would probably be a temporary fix, because apps and ROMs are asking for more and more CPU/RAM these days.
Thanks for any input,
Neo.

A clean flash isn't a bad idea, just backup your rom first.. Backup your apps/ data on your SD with titanium backup and then you can just restore them.. You could try my stable v1.1 script and use Guru (CM kernel with bigmem) or Devil and you will notice the improvement.. Also the CM m9 is a very nice rom.. Happy flashing..

Before I receive your answer, I did some research on my side as well. It turns out that I have downloaded your ROM (the Farewell edition) and the cn.fyodor AOSP 4.4.3 ROM. I decided to go ahead and install the AOSP ROM instead of yours. I wanted to try AOSP instead of CM, being a CM user for the past 2-3 years. While I was satisfied with the AOSP ROM for the past day or 2, I am now unsure if I will keep it. While performances are good compared to what I was used to, I have some issues. The videos in YouTube are lagging like crazy (although videos in VLC work fine) and the audio stutter sometimes. I listen to a lot of music and each few minutes, it will stutter for a split second. I never had that issue with CM11. Also, I can't find a kernel with bigmem on AOSP. There is the marmite kernel from bedalus which seemed promising, but everyone is having FC with the Google Play Store and BLN/BLD isn't working anymore on this kernel.
How does your ROM compare with CM11 ? I know yours is CM based. Is there less "bloatwares" in yours ? CM install lots of stuff (themes, bugs reporting, etc) and I don't want that. I prefer to use the Xposed Framework instead of a ROM with multiple settings that I don't use. Having a CM based ROM would be nice to be able to flash the Guru kernel.

It basically is CM11, a little less bloated, but similar feature set.. Give it a try, you can always flash another rom if it doesn't suite you.. Slim 5.1 is another favorite of mine, if you'd like to try that one you'll need to search their thread as it wasn't a public release..

Your "Farewell edition" is Kitkat 4.4.4 or 4.4.2 ? So that I can download the appropriate Gapps. I also understand that the Gapps you provide in your thread are a minimal package, so my Nexus S doesn't run out of space (which happened to me few months ago due to the new official Gapps package).
Thanks

underclocking and tweaking the governors seem to help a little but i think the kexec drawing a lot of power.
btw gr8 work on the rom integration of cm pa and aokp

i second tht opinion but pa seems to have less battery consumption and with the gapps included into the rom it seems to be quite stable.
but if you want to tweak around with your cpu cm should do the trick.

Maybe a bad download and/or a bad flash.(?) I haven't had any of the issues you're reporting, and haven't seen others reporting the same so it is likely something on your end. Just redownload and reflash and see if that helps.

Hi, the pac rom is very stable and fast, i use the nightly 23.
But, i have a bug to repport wen usb headset is connected, and recive or do a call if you don't hang before the other person hangs the phone is blocked and restart a little secs after.
Second with the lastes builds 26, 25 or 24 the wifi is not working. I test restarting, with wifical.sh, a fresh install (4.0.4 or 4.1.2) motorola roms flashed with rsd, i tried to install the 23 over 26 rom and wifi didin't start.

Always remember that XDA started out as a great place and will remain a great place as long as we are great to each other anything used in this ROM is available upon request and feel free to use this as a base rom for any other project.
WANT TO CUSTOMIZE THIS ROM READ THIS:

Hi. Just installed this and I like it. A few others have been having issues with chrome and location services causing soft reboots and really bad stability. This ROM does not have that problem. I tried first with the full PA gapps and had issues with Google search and the Google calendar FC. Wiped and clean installed and used the Banks gapps. All is good now.
Gonna go install the Elemental X kennel now.
Thanks for the ROM.

HI @jakdillard . First off thanks for the great AOSP ROM. Glad to see more entries. I have a question not about the ROM because its excellent for me but ever since the AOSP ROMs started coming out, some of us have noted a recurring problem with many of them. @scrosler maintains a AOSP ROM which is afflicted. @ctfrommn does too for some of us. The main problem we have is that when we load these ROMs on our Nexus 7 wifi editions and visit pages which request access to locations like www.google.com, www.yahoo.com or others, the chrome browser crashes and for me it causes a soft reboot. If we just stick to the aosp ROM after some bit of time the AOSP browser also gets very unstable and will start crashing no matter how much cleaning, clearing, etc we do. @scrosler had documented some of this and we've collaborated a bit trying to figure out why this happens. On rasbean, carbon, your ROM, and a few others it does not happen.
I am hoping perhaps you could share some knowledge and let us know any commits, if you saw this behavior before you put the ROM up and did something to fix it. Any info at all would be very helpful. I'd love to be able to see this fixed and get the other ROMs working.
Thanks for the contribution again.

Very well put. I build rom's from aosp for myself. I am, of course, running into the same issues. Clearly there is something being added by Google that doesn't exist in aosp to make Google location services work. Obviously this rom has it. With the support of the aosp apps being slowly phased out in favor of Google apps, we are going to need a patch in order to be able to make a fully functional rom. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I have to look over those other roms sources to see what they are missing more the likely they don't have the location services pointing to the right adapter or still using the old way of making device trees causing make to not put the overlays together correctly.

Well there a beta quality build of KitKat in the op this will not be a daily driver until I have a complete source to work with and proper proprietary binaries but good luch and enjoy. Also consider this a nightly project as features will slowly be added.
Always under the radar for some reason, but your builds are always fantastic. Great job as always on 4.4. Loving the additional features.

I was just wondering whether there are any 4.4 roms available? The only one I found was CM but I feel like there must be more. I might be just going blind, however I could not see any other roms. Any links or suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

I suggest using kitkang http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2525831
as its the latest rom with Nightlys going on every night
and seems to be the only one making progress so far (FCC,SD,Overall UI smoothness,Video GPU performance)
SSPENCER10 is working very well for me. Everything he is putting out is stable and appears to be having fewer issues than KitKang. It is even working just as well with ART as it was with Dalvik. The 11-23 build also has the new CM11 boot animation.

You realize they are all based on exactly the same code right?
And you realize that if one makes 'progress' they all make 'progress' because they use the same code right?

I'm using this one and so far so good.
It has nightlies that have 4.4
I'd recommend KitKang. It's been extremely stable and has really good battery life. ART works very well.

Summary: I don't think KitKang is recognizing my SIM card, and is causing "Phone" to crash every second or two.
Hey guys, I tried flashing the latest KitKang ROM last night, but ran into a big issue. I wiped system, cache, dalvik cache, etc. I then reflashed the MF1 firmware (it was already flashed, but for some reason I always feel better re-flashing it every time.) Then I flashed the latest KitKang D2VZW nightly linked above, and flashed the GApps mentioned in that thread too. However, upon rebooting, every second or so it would say "phone has forced closed" (or something along those lines. Also, there was no signal. I got through the setup process after a VERY long time of pressing "okay" to that error and setting up my CM and Google accounts with one key in between each error. I thought I would be able to go into Mobile Networks and change the settings, which fixed certain early issues with CM10.1 or 10.2, but to no avail. I then tried reflashing (after wiping clean) CM10.2 again to get certain files for the phone to work, then flashing CM11 over that, and it seemed to work up until it freezes after getting to the home screen. Any thoughts on what the issue may be and/or how to fix it?
Thanks!

As always, I am not responsible for you bricking your phone. Odin is not a toy, CWM Recovery is not a toy. Installing custom ROMS is relatively easy, but if you are unsure what you are doing, do some research on XDA or Google BEFORE you start messing around. This ROM is working and running on my S730M and I have had no problems so far.

Thanks! It was plagued with issues to start, just trying to get a flashable zip of the stock ROM together was a nightmare, and since there wasn't one any where on the internet to use as a base, well... had no choice but to make one. I'm going to release a non over clocked version as well. This one is still close to stock with a few mods and tweaks, so enjoy and I'll keep working away at bringing a true custom to this phone

Good Job!
I flashed it on my Discover today and it worked flawlessly.
By the way, I didn't make the OC script. It was FitAmp, the credits should go to him.
What launcher did you use? and good job on making a working rom for it, I had been messing around with trying to cook one in the kitchen app for the SS730G. I may give that one a shot with flashing this one, the stock rom on it is having issues anyways as when I try to shut it down it reboots 9 times out of 10.

What launcher did you use? and good job on making a working rom for it, I had been messing around with trying to cook one in the kitchen app for the SS730G. I may give that one a shot with flashing this one, the stock rom on it is having issues anyways as when I try to shut it down it reboots 9 times out of 10.

Launcher pro, the only launcher I will use since I bought my first droid, runs clean and light. There's always the option to change to whatever launcher you like, for me, on this phone, runs the smoothest and that's what I'm going for here. Many changes still to come!
Kitchen is a great tool for learning AS LONG as you take a look at every change you implement with kitchen, in the update or updater script itself. The one thing about it is, that if you fully rely on kitchen, even if it does work, you won't learn a thing. All of the changes kitchen makes, can be made in terminal and text editor (Linux) to give you some hands on experience

I'm partial to the Nova Launcher myself, but I know what you mean. While the stock launcher is better than the standard Samsung Touchwiz crap, it definitely could use a speed increase on this phone.
I keep hoping and dreaming that someone will be able to port KitKat to this phone. I just flashed the current SlimKat rom on my Nexus S and I'm impressed with how fast the Google Now launcher performs on it. Maybe with this one overclocked to 1GHz and it having 512 megs of ram which I think is a little more than the Nexus S had it would make a different.

Kit Kat was built to run on 512mb, from everything I've heard it utilizes memory way better than any other version yet. I'm going to look at porting ROMs to this device, but one project at a time . It should be possible though. Even if I can port a stock 4.4.2 and start customizing from there, I think this phone would benefit tremendously from it, more so then newer more powerful devices.

I flashed my 730G with this rom, so far it looks good. I may switch the launcher to a different one but other than this it looks and appears to run fine. I can't test the radio at the moment as my net10 sim is cut down to nano size and I can't find my regular sim to nano sim adapter. I know I have one but finding it will be the fun part.
Double check the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS etc, make sure they turn on and work. They should as they work fine on the 730m, but you never know. I haven't seen the build.prop for the G

And check your root too. If root works than the rooting process is the same for both. Just open root browser and if it asks for superuser access you're golden. Plan to add terminal and cpu tuner in the next update.

The wi-fi and GPS appear to work fine. I still haven't been able to find my nano to regular size sim adapter. I wound up replacing launcher pro with nova launcher, and I also installed Titanium backup which I used to integrate the google keyboard. After I switched over to it, I froze the samsung keyboard which was a pain in the ass to have to work with. You may want to look into switching the keyboard if you have a preference in a future release. I really like the google keyboard myself.

I've considered switching the default launcher to nova, or I should say I've tried to. I've had issues with everything I've tried, except launcher pro, and lightning launcher. Lighting launcher is actually extremely fast and lightweight, I think the app itself is less the a MB, but its far different than your standard, familiar style of launcher so I opted out. I've tried solo, which is nearly identical to nova, except there's no pro version, all "pro" features are entirely free. I've also tried KK launcher, again very similar to nova, but all three of them will not load after the initial setup screen. Just don't work well as system apps. Loading them into the data partition should solve this problem, but they install with a file size of 0 MB, and again, won't actually load. All of them work fine when installed from the market, or from an apk, just haven't had luck packaging them with the ROM. I'll look into the keyboard thing. I prefer Swype, but given it's a paid app, I can't really incorporate it, and I don't want to just include a 30 day trial app in the ROM. I'll keep plucking away at it tho. Thanks a ton for your input

ok I just wiped it and went thru setup, it worked with no issues with the samsung keyboard and the nova launcher as system apps. maybe this will help for customizing the rom further? Also it might be a good idea to remove the updater app just to be safe. While I don't think that they would ever push out a rom update for the samsung S730M or S730G it might cause issues if someone who didn't know better used the updater app and downloaded a rom update. It may not be an issue, but I figured it was worth mentioning
I wanted to give an update. I was able to successfully use your rom as a base to make my own custom rom. I had to extract the updater script binary from yours to drop into the appropriate folder in my working folder. I'm going to do a little more fine tuning on what apps I want to include but I should have it ready to share soon.
Also, I finally found my adapter so I was able to read my Net10 sim in my S730G, other than it not having the correct APN which I had to manually enter It worked with no problems once I setup the APN, full signal and no issues with downloading anything once the APN was setup.
OK I've finished the 1.0 version of my rom. it can be found here
Thanks but
before I flash this I want to know if anyone knows where I can download the odin flashable stock firmware for this device. So glad that this is out though but this phone is only 4 months old for me still got 8 months for something to go horribly wrong with it
Thanks! Overall OK.

There is no Odin flashable ROM for this phone. I do have there stock flashable zips tho. Worst case scenario, you Odin flash recovery, then flash the stock zip via cwm. I've been working on CM 9, and have not been able to get it to work, but no matter how many times I've flashed it, I can always flash back to stock via recovery, haven't bricked yet

following!
I'm new to flashing in general so I am just learning what the process entails, but I just put CM11 onto an N7 '13 and I am very impressed with what people are doing. I also have a sluggish Samsung Discover so I'm very interested in how this work proceeds!
Best of luck everyone and thank you Atmu5fear, hopefully I can share my experience soon as well.

Fast custom ROM with android 4.2.2

I am looking for a custom ROM for my Samsung Galaxy S II Plus (GT-I9105P) which is faster than the stock ROM.
I installed Liquidsmooth 3.0 and tested the speed and its working perfectly now. Its based on Android version 4.4.3. But the camera app is actually really bad; the pictures are always blurry. I guess something is wrong with the focus, because it works fine with the original 4.2.2 Samsung Camera App. I found out that I can't restore the app because Liquidsmooth (Andoid 4.4.3) doesn't support Touchwiz Apps.
Even the apps from the PlayStore are not as good as the old SamsungCamera App.
So here's my question: Is there a fast custom ROM (preferred a popular like LiquidSmooth) which is baised on 4.2.2? Or are there others who have also problems with blurry pictures in 4.4.3 and have a fix?
CWM 10.1.3 has a lot of bugs, like no vibration, so I don't want this ROM. LiquidSmooth 2.3 is baised on Andoird 4.2.2 but there is no Download Link for the SGS II Plus / doesn't supported? Or does the Phone model even matter?
Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!!

Try lollipop rom... In my opinion has much better camera than kitkat. The only iconvenience is that still don't have the option to sd and don't have pause on camcorder yet

But isn't cwm a Rom created for more personalizing and not for increasing speed? I am worried that it's still slow or is it the speed compared to liquidsmooth?
Lollipop ROM runs on ART runtime, it's much more effective than Dalvik-based.
So far 2 weeks of use no lag at all, back when I was using Paranoid Android 4.6 or CM11 M12, there were some lag sometimes.
Battery life is more awesome than before. In previous ROMs, I don't use GPS and ended up like 30% battery by the end of the day.
With Lollipop, I use GPS 24/7 and ended up 30% battery by the end of the day too.

So I uses ART to speed up the system but the apps are bigger... Am I right? Is there the option to move some of the apps to the SD card?

Sort of, I don't think there is an option for now for our device. Perhaps in the future.

ClockworkMod recovery with SELinux support
Hey guys,
so I was trying to install the ROM but I got a "Status 7" Error which is caused by not having the SELinux support.
I was looking for the file for about an hour but I can't find it.
My CWM-based Recovery has the version 6.0.4.5.

So the rom is great and the battery lasts so much longer but there are still some bugs. Its so great having the latest Android version on this "old" phone! But does any of you also have the problem that after every reboot, some of the app icons are missing/deleted?

There is liquid smooth 3.2 (4.4.4) fyi,. you could try the new google camera from the play store. There are other kitkat roms that are also excellent(sprit, axxion,PAC,PA) should you think Lolipop is too buggy, but you cannot installed touchwiz apps on a custom rom, regardless of android version.

Okay thanks a lot for your answer. I decided to update to Cm12 with Android 5. It's pretty good so far and the developers bring new updates very quickly.
