BB messanger - General Topics

Theoretically speaking, is it possible to get blackberry messenger on an android
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda app-developers app

No its not because it works with a pin which is connected to a blackberry device. So the only way it will ever be able to work on here is if rim decides to work together with android on it.

No because each user is authenticated by a PIN, hardware ID, etc, and all BB data traffic goes through Blackberry's servers. Plus, there are needed encryption/decryption keys because BB Messenger messages are all encrypted.

That's what I was thinking too, however, if you were to modify the hardware of an android would it be possible.

It's nearly impossible to forge a cryptographic key.

I guess my question is why would you wany bbm on your droid?

Idk really, I have an android but a lot of my friends communicate via BBM however blackberry's are pretty crap phones so I was thinking about whether or not it is possible.

You're right.
Whatsapp is better.
It's available on every platform (seriously, EVERY platform, even Symbian and Windows Phone). It does multimedia transfer and group messaging. What more could you want? You get a year free, and you can buy a lifetime license or just pay a dollar a year (which is about 8 cents a month).

You're right lol, whatsapp is significantly BBM but it truly just isnt the same sort of raw system as BBM, also I doubt I'm going to be able to convince all my friends to just stop using BBM and start using whatsapps

you just need to tell your friends to be open minded. i came from a bb but had whatsapp seeing nearly everyone have android/iphone. i never really got the bbm obsession though. it's just msn messenger for your phone is what i always thought.. haha

It basically is MSN on the phone lol, but the majority of them don't really see the point in using whatsapp if they have BBM

Show off with your Android. i.e, customize your home screen, make it look 'sick'. Customize your app drawer with an icon pack and a new font. If you have the ability, Changd the boot animation & sound.
If you're really experienced use new roms/kernels, make it zappy fast when multi tasking. Damn, even through in a dual boot if you like.
These friends should realise how pOOp BB's are then switch. I got my friends away from CrApple.

Nowadays so much application such as Whatsapp,Line, wechat kakaotalk. all of these messengers support to blackberry platform too. So you can have a chat with your friend who use one of this application in blackberry.

Is this a good o.s for teens?

Yea, what the title says, i saw WP7 at a delicious price and found it really cool, my question is, i am 16, have been working with android for a while and i'd like to try something new, would this fit my needs, i am into social networks and it's got Xbox Live, which a major advantage for me!
Yes, I think it actually pretty good for everyone...
Messaging is awesome as it combines messenger, facebook messaging and sms into a single application.
If you (and your friends/classmates) don't care about handset's popularity, "glamour and prestige", WP7 is right choice for you
P.S. 15-year-old daughter of my friend rejected WP7 'cause it's "not so cute and fashionable as iPhone", and "everyone in school has an iPhone"

Actually, teens here in portugal don't really care about fashionable phones, they stick to the simplest phones, but i might get a WP7 then, it seems reasonable and good for me, so thanks for the replies!
Its absolutely insane how cheap most wp7 devices are . All due to marketing and popularity . I'd get one before they get popular and raise in price .

Yeah, that's true. I've got an HTC Desire with Launcher 7 on it and an HTC HD7. And the only phone I use is the HD7. The WP7 experience is just incredible - it's really smooth and runs fast and everything you need is integrated into the OS.
/end of OT
I think that WP7 is a good choice for everyone. It doesn't matter if you're a teen, an adult or an elderly person. I'd definitely recommend a WP7 device. You can't make anything wrong with it.

Ordered a HTC One S... cancelled.

First, Apple are suing the hell out of Android so it probably won't last long anyway
Now no flash support either?? One of the only things Android had over Apple is gone.
Might as well just get a phone that does the same thing and looks much better (instead of every Android phone just getting bigger and uglier)
P.S. this doesn't go without a big F**K YOU to Adobe as well :good:
Edit: okay, I can't bring myself to buy any Apple product other than an OG iPod, so I might just get a Nokia 3310...
They won't be able to do much outside the US where the patent system isn't so messed up. I'm sure Android will live, but if not in the US, then imported. Although I doubt it will die in the US anyways.
Also, you must have lived under a rock for a very long time. Adobe Flash is an extremely old technology. It is a 19 year old goddam technology and its STILL being updated! This is just a small part of the transition to HTML5

Get your facts straight killer. 4.0.anything still supports flash...Adobe is just not updating the app. Not a big deal since sites are going away from flash, so a further update should not be needed. You can sideload flashplayer (can be found NUMEROUS places on XDA) onto any android version. I am currently running 4.1, and flash works just fine. Just because you read it on the internet doesn't make it true...

A patent infringement suit for something like 'Rectangular shape with rounded corners' ( even if they belieive they invented it- if search internet u will see there were products with that shape before ipad) or tap to call if its a phone number is not Andorid OS's core...
If u check here u can see there were not only claims by apple but also against apple too.. They also violated many n settled even with nokia n cisco etc...
Even brand iPhone was Cisico's before Apple , i believe they had only 'i'. They had Voip phone with that brand name... Now they go all over Android phone companies for small small claims coz their butts gets heated up when sitting on those big cupertino seats watching the growth of Android phones....
Even their much hyped 'Siri' is being laughed at...

No need to worry. On June of this year 6 US Senators teamed up to address the mobile technology patent situation. To make a long story short, they said that patents like this need to fall under FRAND...meaning Apple has to license them under reasonable terms. They are saying that once these features hit the market, they are considered standard essential. For example...a touch screen. If a judge says no one can use a touchscreen because apple has it patented, in theory, no other smartphone will offer competition..therefore apple has to license it out. Also, be wary of what you read in those kinds of articles, especially on rootzwiki. It is written by someone who volunteered to write for them and has no real journalism or reporting experience.

LG got Google's attention but not in a good way IMHO. Not being able to supply the demand and cutting down the production because YOU (LG I mean) think that Google will give you the next Nexus product line is like shooting yourself in the foot. And Google gives support for the Nexus line and NOT the producer's phone.
Now, for me, on my black list of companies - not to buy products, LG Mobile got to number one, after comes Samsung Mobile, Apple, HP (all products). I do own other LG products (3D TV, LG freezer), or Samsung - a TV also...but as mobile - LG for me is a "no way".
I hope that they WON'T release another 3D, because in some manner, in some way, the failure of keeping up with support to their products (including not only phones - 3D and 3D Max, but also 3D TV- my TV has a extraordinary picture but lack of fuctionality) killed the 3D trend on the market which is a bad thing - LG is the company with the most number of 3D and 3D related devices - I mean phones, TVs, 3D BR, 3D sound systems, 3D projectors and so on.
I will change my 3D phone with another one only if is produced by Nokia - the only one that I really think that could produce a decent 3D phone and support it.
PS: I have my P920 in very good conditions and think to sell it. Are you interested?

For the lack of apps - watch out the BlueStacks - Microsoft and Nokia, in some way, are afraid of this company because the BlueStacks gives posibility to run Android applications on Windows Phone, so virtually you can have the Google Play on a Windows Phone. So why, me - as a developer (not that I am), must do a Windows version of my application that already exists on Android and can be used on WP also? Lack of developers - lack of dedicated applications. lack of dedicated applications - lack of customers therefor NO MONEY.
A plus note of this BlueStack program is that you can have the best of both worlds - a functional Nokia WP (at least more functional than 80% of Android phones) and android applications.
A minus - for me, is that WP8 is mostly internet and social networking based - and I'm not a user of Facebook, Tweeter and other stuff like this - aside of XDA, WordPress and a few blogs that I follow, I am not in need to be connected to internet, therefor all that Live Tiles interface is rather useless for me.
A Nokia can be my next in line buy. Just not decided between Lumia 920 or Lumia 820

You are right. But it doesn't work for now. I'm sure that, in near future, the BlueStack guys will do it also on WP8. Just think of how much money they can make, even if is priced at 0.99 USD because everybody will buy it just to have, as I told early, the best of both worlds.

A short thing on Windows Store - not my intention to go off topic, but on Windows Phone, as far as I could understand from various forums, you can't install an application from an independent developer (one not listed on Windows Store because of the fees and policies of Microsoft), unless is on Windows Store. And, further more, if you don't have a microSD to you phone but you have a bad internet connection or you're on a limited data plan, you can't install larger apps from Windows Store.
Google Play, from this point of view, is kicking butts.
LG most likely is making at least one more. Circle them on G+ and let them know you are interested. So far I've only seen one or two people express any interest.
Either way they really need to step it up in the updates area. The 3D Max is still on Gingerbread? Really?

It's not to sell their product, but their services, they already offer a BYOD implementation across all devices, so if they also offer unified communication they will sell more server products.
EDIT: I didn't mean products at the beginning, I meant devices. They know they can't force people to use their devices, so they cater to the rest of them.

I honestly can't imagine that that much people would jump ship simply because BBM is available on another platform. I mean, honestly, as wonderful as BBM may be, it's only really useful to users right now when messaging friend with blackberries. Alternatively I suppose they use whatsapp or whatever. Chances are now that BBM would be made cross platform, original blackberry users will be able to communicate will everyone without the need for alternate apps. While some may take the opportunity to try out iOS or Android I believe some genuinely love they blackberries... and to be honest, the new OS doesn't seem half bad.

Honestly, I don't think a BBM app on iOS and Android will make much impact. First of all, Whats App and those other messaging apps have a huge first mover advantage, and have loyal followers already. BBM was great because everyone was using Blackberry phones back in the day. There was nothing amazing about the app itself.

Whatsapp has been dramatically increasing the free usage period for the users. I dont know when are they going to charge. This happened to everyone I know in India at least.
They started with paid download for iPhone but later removed the price tag.
Recent news is that whatsapp is in talking terms with Cellular networks in India to keep the service add free. So usage cost would not be a factor here. It would be the usability factor. User experience and Features.
BBM has an edge with voice dialling, but at the same time whatsapp banks upon the feature that allows phone numbers from contacts to automatically appear in the contact list of whatsapp + video sharing + location sharing is easy.
BBM is by far the most privacy protecting software as the only people chatting with you are the ones who know your pin. + pin approval

I would definitely switch to BBM
Im just surprised thay none of the devs here have managed to port bbm over already I would of thought thatbwould of been a good idea

I certainly won't be making the switch to use BBM. I'm happy enough using whatsapp and always have been.
As the old saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
It seems like an interesting move certainly. Here in my part of Canada, the BB was the phone of choice until the iPhone 4 came out on the local network. Some people still buy Blackberry because of BBM, but now it seems like that selling point is gone. They certainly needed to advertise the new BBs here more because I think that would have a lot of people migrating back.
bbm is the best os in mobile before, but they product device so slowly to loss lots of fans.
and now no one can make that great project to defeat android or ios, even microsoft's windows phone
BBM < whatsapp. Only 1 reason i throw my bb, a ton of annoying broadcast messenger.
life doesn't comes with instructions!

[DISCUSSION]Would you leave Android for a possible Microsoft phone?

Looks like Nokia has given up:laugh: they sold out to Microsoft but microsoft is gonna have to come really good to beat Android OS
What features do you think should be implemented for you to switch?
No way Nokia is dead as ...
.....dead...so is wp
sent from the state where marijuana is NOT illegal !!
nothing can force me to swich from android to another os
but i like all the open source operating systems like ubuntu touch and fire os but android is best
Hell no! I used lumia 850 and i used it for a while till the screen broke, surprisingly, i was so happy.

it feels like you partially own the phone no file manager no privacy it sucks
i cant see a reason to leave android for a microsoft phone, i just see alot of regulations and locks like the iphone.
no reason
i dont see any reason to leave android for microsft.....
This will make a good Hollywood corporate thriller. think it took years to plan.
First - Microsoft wants foothold in hardware in mobile division.so it needs to takeover some good mobile company in peanuts amount.
Second - placing a mole/trojan Elop in Nokia, who rejects Meego,Android. So that Nokia would run into losses, devaluing it.
Third- Nokia finds it difficult to survive due to those nefarious decisions.
Fourth - Microsoft offers to buy Nokia (acting as savior) that too at such a hilarious price (as planned before.)
Fifth - Mission Accomplished!!!
Oops i forgot about the Qs...NO WAY..i wont leave anything (android/Sailfish/Ubuntu/Firefox/ bla bla) for a Microsoft stuff

Very true! The nokia lumia 820 that i owned was a hardware marvel. The only problem was that it ran on a lousy windows software.
Some of its bad features were:
1. The os directories were perfectly hidden. You couldnt tweak anything!!!
2. The apps were limited in features. 3. Some features that are taken for granted in android could not be seen anywhere.
Eg. Screen rotation.
4. There wasnt a single file browser (microsoft or 3rd party).
5. The marketplace was full of paid softwares that isnt worth ****.
6. Where's my google apps???!!!
7. Beauty cant compare with brains.
8. Copied text kept disappearing after some time.
9. Wheres my firefox?
10. Internal memory made a fuss if i ever added too many apps.
11. I kept dreaming about installing jellybean over it.

Hmm, I think I'll stay with android. Have a few friends with windows phone, and I don't really see something special from window phone (yet)

I'd like to try a windows phone, though they probably aren't that good compared to android, change is good from time to time, different taste
I would rather switch to iOS. At least it has native apps and you can jb. Oy also it has a huge app ecosystem. None of these apply to WP8

now why would i do that?? i love android, the customizabilty and the fact that it's open source.. and even if windows release something similar, i don't think i would make that change.. not that i'm not open minded but i have tried a LOT of different platforms and android was the only one i really got comfy with...

I had a Lumia 920 for a while, nice phone and the OS is not bad, however I soon missed android and had to go back. Still use a Lumia 820 for work though.
I don't think I would switch, the customizability and flexibility of Android is simply amazing

I voted "No"..
But I think microsoft would make a huge move after this.
Let's just wait a couple of months more..

Agreed, a mix of apple like tactics plus VS2013. Also imagine if you could plug your phone to your TV and get a full Windows RT desktop. Of course Microsoft would have to ditch the "Store only apps" policy. I would buy it in a heartbeat though

There's so much fun in using Android, that it consumes too much of my time playing the cell phone.
Maybe it's not bad to change to WP so that you leave you phone alone.
If it run's Linux, It's a keeper. Stay far away from Microsoft if you can.
