I am about to take an abroad trip to central and eastern Europe and I would like to stay in contact with some family and friends here in the states.
I know that CM 10.1 has some issues with VOIP, hence the problem with Tango. but anyway, I would like some advice on what apps would be handy to have while abroad.
I know I can use Facebook to message people, but I don't want to use that. I hate the app honestly. Also, I am aware that I can use Skype to call, but I won't have the time to call people all the time, I would like an app where I can just text just like an SMS.
Additionally, I don't want to buy a SIM card while there because my professors have told us that AT&T does not allow that and I am on a strict budget while abroad.
Thanks for any help and advice y'all can give.

Best apps to have when a broad? I'm not sure they make transvestite-specific apps.
But in all seriousness, I believe there were some recent commits merged to fix VOIP functionality in CM. (I know for a fact Roger_N was posting builds with a VOIP fix in the Project Rookie thread)
I am from Makeevka Ukraine. I have been all around Europe. The best apps that work for me are Viber and Rebtel. I switch back to 4.1.2 when I travel. Viber is free calling and messaging over wifi. Rebtel is free as well over wifi. Whoever you are messaging or calling must have these apps as well. Hope this helps.

I'm wondering if it's possible to make a native app (as in an apk) that lets me use Sprint Family Locator as a native app. Anyone?
What's wrong with free Google latitude? I love it.

I thought they said they have not got it approved yet from Apple. That is why they probably started iPhone first, the approval process could take months.

yahoos reply in response to my email:
Hello,
Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Messenger.
Before I go into addressing your concern, I'd like to first apologize
for the delay in my responding to your inquiry. We are committed to
answering your questions as quickly and accurately as possible. However,
we are currently receiving unusually high volumes which caused the
delayed response.
I understand you wish to have more information regarding the ability to
use video calling features in Yahoo! Messenger for Android.
Thanks for your suggestion of a new feature for Yahoo! Messenger for
Android. The current version of Yahoo! Messenger for Android doesn't
have this feature right now, but we appreciate that you took the time to
tell us about what you'd like to see in a future version.
I'll pass your suggestion on to the Yahoo! Messenger Product Team and
they will put it under consideration for a future release. (Our
development cycles can be quite lengthy, so please don't expect to see
it right away if they decide to include it.) However, be assured that we
are continually striving to make Yahoo! Messenger the best messenger
product on the market, and your suggestions help us to decide what is
most important to our customers.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let us know as
soon as possible.
We appreciate your reporting this to us -- your input helps us to
identify ways to constantly maintain and improve our service.
Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Messenger.

Kyle

Wow nowhere in that response does it say that it is coming at all, just says they are continuing to develop, that kinda sucks since we know it is on the myTouch HD, well, I had messenger installed and on auto update but after reading that letter I guess I am gonna uninstall and free up some space It just drives me nuts that we have one of the most capable handsets on the market and we can't get a damn phone to comp. video chat app, that is like the LAST thing that I want my Evo to do, C'est la vie

Hi,
This is a member of Viber's development team.
Can you please elaborate more on your issue?
What device you have?
Viber only partially supports MIUI but we might be able to help anyway.
Thanks,

When Viber will be supported in ICS ?
I'm currently running on an ICS MIUI.
I did launch the application and nothing is shown, but I believe the background service is still running as I could get viber contact list.
it is viber supposed to work on ICS?? or not yet?

Ahh... you're running MIUI on ICS.
We are aware of the problems with Viber on ICS, and working this very moment to fix it.
As you know, many fundamental changes were made on ICS (not only visual improvements). In order to adapt Viber to ICS the best way and make sure we don't release a half-baked app, we need some time for developing and testing.
We estimate that the release would take up to several weeks, but we wouldn't want to guarantee a specific release date at this stage.
Once we have any news we'll keep you posted - we apologize for the temporary inconvenience.
this makes me feel like reading a newspaper lol

Are you a politician ?
We're a company.
As much as we would have loved to develop everything as soon as possible and throw promises in the air, we also have to be realistic and a little restricted with guaranteeing things to our users, because we don't want them to be disappointed, nor do we want to not live up to our promises and estimates
It has nothing to do with being a politician... just credibility of a business

Ok.. So here's my question. I emailed your team and submitted a trouble ticket, as subsequently advised after my initial email, regarding the incompatibility with ICS. That was over six weeks ago. In fact the sdk for Android 4.0 has been out even longer than that! So what's the delay? Is there only one coder working on this? Why have Tango, Skype, Fring, et al, been able to release compatible apps before the Galaxy Nexus was even released.. Yet Viber can't..?
I'm asking a serious question, primarily because of how frustrating it is. I'm now stuck using an inferior product (Tango) as a stop-gap, and all I want is Viber to work with ICS already!

First, I want to agree with this guy, but then again viber does treat their product with care and quality work so that's why they are that much better. I'm holding off on Ics just because of viber so I understand your frustration. I don't want to use tango cuz it's not great.
2 things.
1) try using fring. It's much better than tango. Tango isn't good quality.
2) thank you for making a great app viber. We are anxious because we are waiting on you. I can only ask that you guys hurry haha.

I wouldn't want to make any comparisons to other products. I can tell you about ourselves that traditionally, we've always preferred delaying releases until we're much more calm about its functionality and quality, rather than releasing it simply as soon as possible, so we are in line with all the other communication applications who released it since day 1.
This time we might have been a little under-prepared, that's true, but still it is important to note that Andriod 4.x user percentage among all Android users is still very, very low. If we were to follow the "usual" criteria for devoting resources within a company, you would see how that couldn't be our first priority.
However, we are working on it as hard as we can (with more than one coder! haha) and we should have good news soon. I'll keep you posted
It has been almost a month, care to give us some details on the progress?
Is viber going to be available to users of Android 4.x anytime soon?
it looks like they are still coding for the new system
@Casilan,
We have made some serious progress in the past couple of weeks, and the end is certainly in sight.
We still don't have an exact release dates, but we estimate it will take up to several weeks for it to be fully ready and released to Market.
Note that our development team is working around the clock to complete it ASAP. We apologize for the delay, but it's important to understand that it's delayed because we want to ensure that the app is released free of bugs. Stay tuned for news - it's coming soon.
Hey everyone,
I'm going on vacation to the US and for those people in the US, I wanted to know what services you guys use that are exclusive to the US. For example, things like Google Voice, Spotify, Google Muisc aren't available in Canada, so I thought I'd make use of my time in the US and get some of these awesome services. I've already made accounts for Google Voice and Google Music. Is there anything else you guys recommend?

HI XDA-Members,
I am thinking the more flexible way to talk internationally without spending main balance. Yes whats whatsAPP is giving only through message transfer. But if we can talk directly through one application, then it would be a huge gain for the users and lose for telecom providers. I am not telling about video conference, also audio conference. I do not know whether such app is available or not. If the app is not available, then it would be a huge. I would try to work on that. Please XDA members give me suggestions on this.

This is a purely web based app... but would be too useful.
