Samsung Galaxy S4 undressed on camera, found to be easily repairable - Galaxy S 4 General

http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/10/samsung-galaxy-s4-teardown/
This is nice considering the HTC ONE is not repairable. This makes me want to get the S4 for this simple fact.

I don't think that the micro USB port is easily replaceable like they say though. All those little pins are soldered to the motherboard on the gs3. I doubt that they just plug in in the s4. It takes a steady hand and a good mini soldering set to do that

The point is that the whole USB connector board is extremely simple and thus probably very cheap to replace, nobody's talking about desoldering the connector itself.

The IT168 teardown from a month ago already revealed much of the excellent interior design of the phone.

It's funny, in all the years I've been on xda, I've never seen such importance being placed on whether some guys can pull a phone to pieces. Now people are wanting a phone for this very fact!

Well I think the reason it matters, say for me for example, is because I want to know I can fix it if its breaks especially if I am investing 800 dollars.
Say the S3 for example. Screen cracked. Cost me less then 200 to fix. Had that happen to a HTC ONE, where its not replaceable, and I don't have insurance, I am out 800 dollars.
So yes, there is a huge importance on whether or not its easy to fix if it breaks. We're not talking about 100, 200, or even 400 dollars phones. These phones are much fragile and more expensive then ever before.

Said the man with the unrepairable phone.
Repairibility is kind of important in a couple of ways. A difficult to repair device is as bad for the manufacturer as it is for the consumer. If what would normally be nominal warranty repairs end up requiring device replacement the manufacturer is going to look to offload those costs to consumers either through increased claims of "customer induced damage" or classifying defects as cosmetic which aren't covered under warranty. And manufacturers that void warranties for unlocking bootloaders have already demonstrated their view on absorbing warranty repair costs.
Replacing a back cover on a Galaxy device is $20 and a new polycarbonate casing for a One X is $125 installed. Display replacements for both are $150-200. Both can also be done by customers themselves to save money if they have the skills. What the impact of low repairibility really is won't be known for a couple of months when people start posting both their warranty experiences and costs compared to other devices for typical repairs. Look at it this way, if repairibility didn't matter manufacturers wouldn't invest as much as they do to achieve high degrees of it.

I have a 2 year warranty.....
I can understand replaceable screens, but I have spent €330 replacing my girlfriend's S3 screen twice. I could get a decent second hand S3 for that.
@Barry I somehow manage to sleep at night, even in the knowledge that ifixit couldn't even figure where to start when tearing down the One

I agree. And it will day someday and the performance will also decline constantly.
That is the main reason for buying a phone with replaceable battery. In a couple of years when I may want to sell my phone, who will buy it when the battery will be dramatically reduced after within the first year they bought it? At least LG tried to remedy this with their 800-cycle battery that should live 50% longer than ordinary Li-Poly. But there is NO indication that the HTC One uses this kind of battery It is a deal breaker for me and one of the main reasons I choose SGS4.

Link to HTC rebutting iFixit's review and providing the proper instructions for opening the phone without damaging it? They test dozens of devices a year. Give them some credit for being able to figure out how to open them. And HTC's had no problem using Twitter as a megaphone so I'd think if they were slandered by a "1" reparability rating that wasn't accurate they'd have said something in their defense.
And your two year warranty and even insurance doesn't cover cosmetic damage. What if it's dropped and deforms which even a TPU case wouldn't protect it from and you want/need to replace the casing? Frail device + low reparability = not good. The One's a gorgeous phone and a lot of people will be drawn to it for that reason. But you can't tout its best feature without also discussing the potential down sides. The real test isn’t our discussion about what “might” happen; it’s the experience of owners over the next couple of months. If there’s some secret button on the outside of the phone that you press to have it pop apart that iFixit missed I’ll be the first to humbly apologize. Same thing if drops don't create the deformation Android Authority experienced.
This was from 4' in Android Authority's drop test...

Funnily enough, there is a 'secret button' to unlock the One.
As someone pointed out in the One forums, the phone would be heated to a certain temperature, where the bonds would essentially fall apart and the phone could be repaired. It's also fairly obvious that way to dismantle the one is via the speaker grills.

For that to be true, one of the following had to happen:
1) After taking the device completely apart iFixit realized that removing the glued-on speaker grills was the correct way to dismantle the device and, rather than admitting their original approach was wrong, published a story that was factually inaccurate and to a degree slandering HTC's 2013 flagship.
2) No matter which way you approach it, there's no good way to disassemble a One resulting in the replacement of components unrelated to whatever's necessitating the repair.
I guess time will tell which of the two is correct.
And this has nothing to do with how iFixit actually accessed the guts of the phone.
Nine steps after prying the display assembly up from the case, we finally get a look at it on its own. Just like we saw earlier with the battery, this component can't be replaced without removing everything from the rear case…and then first taking out the motherboard.
Here's what it comes down to. HTC's development goal for the One was design. Anything packaging related was compromised to achieve it including moving the power button from the more logical right side to the left. So, to achieve their design goal, everything was crammed in to the device in whatever way was necessary to support a unique antenna structure because of the aluminum, meet dimensional and weight targets, and deliver a beautiful device. So kudos to HTC for pulling it off. But that doesn't absolve them of the impact to reparability their approach caused. And like you said in your first post how much it matters is still a question.

I didn't have warranty on my s3 when the screen broke. Not everyone has the option to get warranty, especially accidental.
So yes, it is extremely important to know how easy it is to fix a device when you don't have warranty. Especially if your like me that pays full price. I don't like contracts.
It's like my laptop. I have a gaming laptop that I bought 3 years ago. Video card died. It had a 5870m ATI. I could, 1, buy a new gaming laptop for 2k. Or 2, buy a newer video card, spend 500 bucks on a 7970m, mod the cooling, and walla. Fixed, plus I get another 5 years out of it because of the awesome video card (6 times the performance). Warranty was only good for 2 years. This laptop is one of the few that is OMG SO SIMPLE to repair. Modding the cooling for the new video card was a task that took 6 hours. Got my money worth.

I'm talking about warranty, not insurance. Warranty will never cover you breaking your screen.
You're right though, if you plan on owning something past the warranty period, then repairability might be important to you.
Over the last 6 or so years, I have had 7 HTC's and 3 Samsung's. I have never had to pay for a repair (unless you count 2 repairs for the screen of my girlfriend's S3), and my HTC Hero had a defect, so was replaced next day by my mobile provider.

Sensation Failure / Internal short

Ok so today the worst possible thing happened.
i've owned my Sensation since my HD2 (3rd one) finally had a permanent touchscreen failure in August.
Today while on a call the phone started making a hissing noise, then a pop followed by the usual electrical fire smell. It's now dead.
I'm still under warranty which is good, I'm sure I'll get a refurb through T-Mobile which is bad.
I've seen all the normal issues like dust under the screen, creaking frames, non-responsive LCDs but has anyone had this issue before?
I've seen this before on old phones, something internally shorts and it pops a chip which is for sure a manufacturer defect (I only use OEM accessories and it was not charging when it happened).
I'm disappointed and my feelings are hurt. The last 4 HTC phones I've owned all had differing failures but failures none the less.
<poop sandwhich> :-(
You must be very unlucky. I had 1 HD2 and IT still works great with MIUI inside.

LOL yeah, no, i dont believe in luck or things of that nature.
If youve seen the forums then you know you are the exception not the rule.
We trained and staffed service centers for bth old cingular and current sprint. Fact is from my own eyewitness at the carrier level HTC has one of the highest failure rates in general.
Check this out (shout out to how dysfunctional HTC repair is). Note all units were within the original 1yr warranty timeframe.
1. First HD2 , failed digitizer
HTC repairs but wont return until i pay $78 for non-existent physical issues when sent in.
After escalation to US AG and BBB for warranty extortion HTC repaired all issues free of charge
HD2 retruned repaired but now with boot problem, boots only %30 then boot loops.
Sold that unit.
2. Second HD2, failed digitizer
This time went straight through newly found HTC legal contact who escalated my issues.
HTC repairs and sends back again a malfunctioning unit.
Digitizer works for 1 day and then stops responding.
Frustrated beyond belief, sold that one.
3. Bought a brand new in the box HD2 from some random leftover tmous stock.
Worked great for 3 months then developed bad nand memory.
At this point knowing the run around ill get i dont even bother with HTC service.
Upgraded to sensation.

So, this is not a cry for help, bu a rant... Fair enough.
On a positive side, it's nice to see a phone to die in a unique way Good luck with your next choice.
Did you take out the battery and inspect for damage or burn marks?
Overall it defiantly sounds like a lemon. There bound to be a few, especially considering that you had all the possibles hardware issues discussed here on the forum.
My only issue so far is the touch screen grounding.

Correct, not a cry for help, although I thought that was fairly evident. I already know the phone isn't fixable from seeing issues like this previously.
More of a 1/2 rant in relation to my HD2s, 1/2 Query if others had seen the issue before on sensation?
In the old days we notoriously saw this with certain Nokia models where a chip or circuit literally burns inside the phone.
First thing I did was tear the phone open and remove the battery, battery looks fine, phone itself looks brand new still. clearly I can't tear the phone down fully to inspect as it would void any chance of replacement under warranty.
Again it was in use, not-charging. The syptoms were:
1. Hissing noise coming from inside the phone, not through earpiece
2. Loud Pop/ Display got real bright during
3. Electrical fire smell eminating from the internals of the phone.
4. Phone is dead.

Ok so after the usual TMoUS "warranty exchange is not on your acct" my original rep was able to verify theyhad the wrong SOC in my BAN and then resolved it so now ive got a new-to-me refurb on the way. After 2 6700s, 1 ppc6800, 3 HD2s I am game for another sensation.
In a perfect world I'd prefer a new batch production model, but a refurb is still ok.
Some people argue that a refurb is better because all potential issues have been dealt with but in reality the latest production batch is always preferred since refurbs can easily suffer memory block failures sooner than new units. A proper warranty engineering system allows for production process to change to resolve failure issues so that current production doesnt suffer from previous production defects. But since ive no way to guarantee the most current production batch a thoroughly tested refurb is ok.
The real key difference is HTC will repair the same unit you submit which means you could still be harboring latent unseen defects. TMoUS is an advance exchange so I for sure get a new-to-me unit.
When i handled these programs we actually did a seed stock program so we could repair handsets on the spot and swap handsets for clients in the same manner, on the spot no wait.
And yes, ALL carrier exchange programs utilize refurbished products from independant companies, they are not refurb'd by HTC.
SIDE NOTE: *As i eluded to ive many years working for carriers. Frankly these TMoUS reps at our local core store are truly top notch. Ive had several situations outside the norm and each time they have gone above and beyond.
We had a brief moment of fun when he thought he could get the sensation to power up by plugging it in. I used the moment to yell "hit the ground, she's gonna explode!" which had everyone looking around like WTF!
I LOL'd.
New sensation arrives tomorrow.

I think you should really re-think the "luck" thing...the chance of someone getting all those defective phones is probably statistically very low.
On other note...people who have problems with their phones will post their problems on the forum. While people with no problem with their phones will be less likely to post that they have no problem with their phones...so the forum is really a biased measuring metric.
Anyway, I am running InsertCoin 3.4.3 with Bricked 1.6b1...smooth as my baby girl's butt.

LOL maybe ill consider luck.....naw.
I tell from my own firsthand experience in the service centers that this entirely normal.
The refurb handset they sent me was really bad condition cosmetically. That is a great surface indicator of potential problems and sure enough the unit is DOA.
Normally i run NRGZ sense 3.5 without issue. Roms are fine, this is a hardware issue.
And yeah we only really hear when there are issues, you are for sure correct about that LOL.
OK really need to say nice things about my local reps.
The store manager felt horrible for what had happened and was able to swap me for a brand new in the box unit. I pointed out that I paid full price $549 for the phone 90 days ago and he felt the same way.
Truth is, each time I've dealt with these people they have been so very helpful overall and this time went above and beyond because I know it's frowned upon to do what he did, but he put customer service first. That means everything to me.
Thank you TMoUS.

Power button question

Is everyone else's power button on the ATT HOX feel like it's hard to push? Maybe not hard to push but it's such a low profile that I feel that I am having problems pushing it... Hard to explain. Just making sure there isn't something wrong with the phone that I have. Just took back a case to Best buy because the power button was soooo hard to push in it. Sometimes didn't register.
Thanks all
AJ
Not just you. I'm having a hard time getting used to it from my old Captivate. (Of course it's about 12 times better in every other category, so I'm not too upset!)
Oh I'm not upset.....I'm coming from a Samsung Galaxy S2 and this phone is by far the best phone I've ever used so far but since every phone I've ever used has had a raised power button be it on the side or top, I was just worried that maybe I got a defect but I guess I didn't.
That's why I love this board. So friendly and polite. Thank you.
AJ
Hmm... Was your case the platinum holster one? That's what I'm using right now and It's kinda ridiculous how hard it is to press. It registers maybe 25% of the time I press it. I use my nail now though so it works every time almost.
Sent from my HTC One X
LOL! Yep sure was. Took it back to Best Buy and the returns lady said that this was the third one she had seen today returned! I just want a simple silicone case with good protection and camera lip thing. Is there anything like that out there for the ATT HOX?
Thanks all
AJ
Hehe, thought it might be the same one. I noticed the packaging to my case was actually opened when I bought it. Someone might have returned it Sunday morning xD.
Not really sure what other cases are available that fit correctly. I recommend not getting one on eBay. Most block the camera. There's a thread about cases and pouches in the accessories section.
Sent from my HTC One X
I just actually picked up that case today! I'm going to return it as well because I too am having a difficult time pressing it. Also, the fourth row of the speaker grill was also being covered. Pretty poor design.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I got a rocketfish gel/silicone semitransparent grey case at best buy for $25...it is light, fits snug and doesn't cover the speaker..covers the back well so that when you sit it down, the camera lens is in no danger of being scratched as the camera protrudes a little bit without case...I have same issue w power button but it's not hard to press...it's that it's so low profile that its hard to feel it...fantastic phone and battery is amazing...got 26 hrs out of first charge...got about 9 on my Vivid...but it was a 1600 mah battery where this one is 1800 or 1850, not sure though..and phone is about 1.5 ounces lighter..battery is better because it is embedded...you lose power anytime you 'plug" in a battery where the contacts are...this battery is directly on the board so there is no loss...same principle applies to hard wired appliances compared to those with plugs...coax cables with multiple splitters result in signal degradation on tvs...I think this is why HTC opted for embedded batteries as people complained about battery life...although my various iPhones in the past had poor battery life...but it is best to charge phone ONLY when battery is down to 10% or less...every time u charge, you lose approximately 30-45 seconds of total battery per charge so the less you charge the better...
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Seriously? Do you really think your great batterylife is due to it being "embedded"(which it really isnt) and not having contacts(still has a connector)? Really?
Do you really think you lose 30seconds off your battery life by charging it before it is run down?
Ponderous.
Really erroneous info guy. Not helping. Did you just decide to make things up?
Battery life is better because of improvements with hardware. It uses less juice. PERIOD.
Lithium ion is extremely tolerant of charging from any level. Should have no adverse effect if you charge at any time, full, empty or in between.

Was your 8088 hardwired to your A/C at home so it was more efficient? Programming != electrical engineering.
Yes there is a TINY bit of loss by using contacts. It's an easy check with an ohmmeter. But it really only applies to high current applications, which we are not dealing with here. And no, it's not enough to make any measurable difference. And your coax analogy is ridiculous. We aren't dealing with gain, SNR, taps, etc. Geez.
Going back on topic, I now get 95% registers with the power button. If you press on the far left of the button it works almost every time with the platinum case. I think it just needed to be broken in.

[Q] What is my wife doing wrong with her phones??

Ok so i have an unusual problem...well my wife more specifically...in the last year or so my wife has had 3 different phones, all on verizon. The HTC Incredible, HTC Thunderbolt, and currently the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
Each phone has begun giving her freezing and random reboot problems after only a couple weeks use.
The Inc was mine before she got it and i NEVER had any problems with freezing/reboots. And it was never rooted.
The thunderbolt was bought used from Gazelle(thru ebay) and also not rooted when the problems started( i did root/flash rom afterwards but the problem came back). I also had a different thunderbolt and never had these issues.
And now we are on the Galaxy Nexus (both bought brand new right from Verizon). She is once again having freezing and phone power off problems.
What the heck could she possibly be doing to her phones to cause this?!?
If any more info is needed please just ask.
Thank You!!!
What are the external variables that have changed? ie is she charging the phone in a different car? Aftermarket batteries? That's weird though, I cant see it happening on 3 phones...
Had an issue with software once that killed 4 phones. Something about overclocking an the phones frying out.

He mentioned one of the phones had never been rooted, so I doubt it was an overclock issue. Still, cant rule anything out at this point.
She used the same charger for the two HTC phones. But a brand new one with nexus. She has had many different car chargers over this time period. Always loses them ...don't ask me how lol. But unless she's neglected to tell me something, no other outside variables have changed that I can think of.
And as far as software, it would be only non root apps. All three phones were never over clocked. And only thunderbolt rooted.

Oh and I wanna note that the thunderbolt was on the original battery during the problems and I changed it to an aftermarket one and the problem remained.

gps is used very rarely and camera is only maybe 5-10 pics a day at most. The only apps she uses in large amounts everyday are facebook and the stock browser.
I stopped figuring out what my sister does whit the phones I buy for her honestly ladies and smartphone doesn't just go along very well... neither does ladies and driving (pun intended)
And my sister has the same issue whit 4 phones I bought for her so if you find a fix lmk ! My thoughts are that they open a lot of apps whitout killing them so the ram decreases and thus leads to freezing?

Haha! I feel like you could be right. On both phone and driving lol. I guess to give me something to experiment with, does anyone have any recommendations for a task killer app that can kill any app automatically after you leave the app? Like say one minute after you close any app it will be completely closed so its not using ram anymore.
My Girlfriend had the same problem, I figured out, by finally opening one of the phones after buying a new one.
That they were all water damaged, they weren't red though, only pink. So it indicated that the phone had been in a humid area. Not underwater.
So I asked her, it seemed she brought her phones to the bathroom. (I do too) But her showers were so long, that the room gets humid and mist comes into the phone, making it "sweat" a little.
So ask her, does she take the phone into the bathroom or kitchen? Could be it.
P.S: Now shes got an Xperia GO. No problems sofar.
My experience with random freezes are mostly when the phone is doing background syncing.
I Think some app's might update (or maybe she installed new apps) and one of them is crashing the system.

she does in fact take it into the room when showering. I do as well, but I always put it under a towel or something of the such. so this is most definitely a possibility. what do i check to see if there is water damage? I don't have her Thunderbolt anymore but i have the Inc and obviously shes still using the Nexus. So i could check those.
The one thing that i didnt note that i forgot i did, was that i rooted and rommed the Inc just for the heck of it about a two months ago to use it as an mp3 player. I didnt have any issues while playing music (and disconnected from data all the time obviously, and from wifi majority of the time)

yea that has always been a concern of mine, if its some app that she has downloaded on each phone, that is doing this.
I wish i could have foreseen this coming so i could have noted all the apps on the phone prior to wiping/getting rid of phone. But she's no help when i try to ask what apps she always makes a point of downloading.

Well, open the phone, take out battery, and there should be either a White, Pink or Red sticker on there, next to the brown charging things. Else theres some inside the phone.
Red: Heavy water damage (Swim)
Pink: Misty, humid water damage.
White: Normal.
Heres some pictures from my Arc, which had small incident in a cup of tea water.

I'll be sure to look once she gets home tonight.
And FYI a method I found that worked great when my sister dropped her phone in a toilet was, get battery out and put in a bag with a lot of rice. Sucked the moisture right out.
Thanks for the response. And thank you everyone so far for your responses. I hope I get this figured out. I'll post back again once I've gotten my hands on her phone.

Why or how do people drop their phone in the toilet? I Just can't understand how they manage to do that. It's not like you are going to answer phone call's while doing your business on the toilet. Maybe they are writing text messages... But still, I just can't see why people can't wait a few minutes until their done.

Think UV light will fix your OnePlus One yellow band completely? Think again...

Received my OnePlus One yesterday and I have to say I am completely head over heels in love with it.
But..... I'm OCD when it comes to my electronics and of course mine had to come with the nasty yellow banding at the bottom.
I'm thinking I might have gotten a customer's return which is weird because it was completely sealed, I had to open it by pulling the threaded tab just like in all the unboxing videos. When I went into gallery, there were about 100+ personal pictures of some random dude and his family, a bunch of downloaded crap, ringtones, other 3rd party browsers, Amazon apps, ect. Hell I even got some full length movies on there, Transformers and a bootleg cam'd version of Edge of Tomorrow.
My guess is that OnePlus is putting customers returns into new packages and sending them out without even fully wiping them correctly. My unit looked like it was never touched, all the screen sticker ect. wow...just wow.
Anyways back to the yellow band, so I followed the advice of people all over the forums to use UV light to try and fix the issue. Well, good thing my mother in law owns a nail salon, I asked if I could take one home for a night. Took it out to the garage and went to work...
On the positive side it actually does help....a little. From a scale of 1-10, 10 being very yellow at the bottom and 1 being completely white at the top, under the UV light for 10 minutes, the yellow was reduced to I'd say a 7.
Bad news is that it doesn't improve any further after that, I put it in there for another 10 minutes and it didn't make a difference. Went crazy and left it in there for 45 minutes, still no improvement. Don't know if the UV damaged my digitizer but touch sensitivity seems to be degraded. Doesn't register my touches as nicely as before...
So there you have it, I left it in a professional nail salon UV machine for about an hour, way more than the recommended 15 minutes, it improved it a little bit but seemed to have messed with the touch sensitivity of the device.
Use UV at your own risk, I tried it and it helped but didn't fix it completely. I love the device too much so I'll be ordering another one when I get a chance.

Another thing during work today I was experimenting with it and noticed if you apply light heat from a heat gun (lowest setting) the yellow COMPLETELY disappears. Unfortunately when it starts cooling down the yellow comes back.

I left my OnePlus in the sun on the first morning after I got it. I put it in the morning sun while I got ready for work and made breakfast. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being beyond unacceptable the phone started as a "5". I could definitely see it but it was clearly a "I'd be the only one to notice" amount of yellow. After about 1 hour of direct morning sun on a 75 degree morning it's a "1" now. Just a slightest of slight hints of yellow that may be the warm calibration of the phone.
That's my experience with the whole mess.

That's insane man, though not very surprising of OnePlus at this point. I guess paying $360 for a device of this caliber will numb any indignation. Did you buy it directly from OnePlus using an invite? What is the supposed build date of your phone? Where did it ship to you from? Everything seemed perfectly new when I got mine, the only thing that I thought was odd was the lack of any documentation, you know like a user guide, warranty, warnings etc. Did you get any?
As far as the yellowing goes, I feel that it is slowly fading away, and I haven't even exposed it to any California sunshine or heat, I've mostly used it in air conditioned areas.
I got mine without any defects, but I don't think keeping it under UV light for an hour would do good to any phone.
Why not root it and tweak RGB values with trickster to at least make it unnoticeable?
People bashing everyone but themselves as always.

There is no need to use mods to adjust the RGB values on this device. You can do it with the stock ROM.

You can only control Hue, Saturation, Contrast, Intensity with the stock ROM. You cannot adjust RGB values, you'll need a custom kernel with this commit in order to adjust the RGB and I'm sure later down the line, there'll be gamma controls similar to the N5 on the OPO
I don't understand this yellow band madness.
If it will really go away just by exposing the phone to sunlight, well, just use the phone normally and it will go away soon or later.

Yes I ordered it directly from oneplus.net, I purchased the invite on eBay. Paid $100 for the invite... I know... but I just had zero patience and had to have it NOW! I felt like Veruca from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
So all in total I paid about $469.xx, but even at that price if seems like a steal. Paid almost $700 for my GS5 which feels like junk compared to this bad boy.
It's too bad about the hardcore yellow band at the bottom of mine, I think I found the perfect phone. The battery life on this thing is R-E-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S! I swear it doesn't want to die.
That sucks it was a used one. To make it worse I would be livid paying over retail for it too and having a yellow band.

Yeah at first I was going to return it but after hearing people had to pay $50+ to ship it back to China and no guarantees of getting back a perfect device, I decided against it.
I'm hoping my case is just an isolated incident, imagine the outrage if OnePlus was really putting customer's returns back in new sealed boxes and sending them out in order to meet demand?

They need to do a lot to gain respect. They are lucky people settle with the yellow screens. How can you say it's suppose to be like that? They can control the situation now and censor, deny rma, because of the invite system.
Imagine if the phone was released publicly. Stores would stop buying them because of returns and they would have a lot more people complaining than on the forums about a yellow screen.

Question Hardware concerns

Had the 7 Pro less than 6 weeks and noticed a couple issues I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing or has input about. The volume rocker was loose from the get-go, but I assume it's within tolerance levels and can let that go, although the amount of play is concerning. However, about a week ago, the device started heating up at random times and yesterday I noticed the bottom right corner on the back glass panel is lifting. Is it safe to assume this could be the battery swelling? I can gently press it down and it springs back up. (No damage whatsoever from impacts, misuse, etc)
I contacted Google support and the response was...mind bogglingly dumb..."cosmetic damage." I mean, what are ip ratings for, right? My options are to send it to Google for repair or take it to an authorized shop, which are all pretty backed up where I live and google will take a couple weeks. Told them I can't be without a phone since I'm an active paramedic, father, and husband and was pretty much told I'm s.o.l. Posting a pic to see if the device randomly heating and the back lifting in the corner seems like possible battery bulge to anyone else. I hope Google never truly wonders why they make up such a small share of the smartphone market when compared to all other manufacturers. The white spots appear to be adhesive bits

My Pissel 7 Pro doesn't have such gap between. I mean, they can't really tell if it's JUST a cosmetic issue till they check it out. What if the seal (glue) is broken and the water enters there? Will they say you went Scuba diving with your phone so the water got in due to high pressure? I mean, Google....wth.
That would be factory reset and returned immediately if it was me. Ridiculous comments from Google.

You say the device "started heating up at random times"...did you determine what was causing this to happen? How hot was it when it was heating up? A heat gun is used to remove the back glass on most phones so if the heat was high enough I suppose it could have weakened the glue. Hard to say if the battery is swelling but too much heat can cause all sorts of issues. YMMV

You need much higher heat than what a device would normally produce during any kind of usage in order to even soften up the glue.
Starting from 80C degrees and above and it takes a good few minutes to soften it up, it all depends on how high the heat goes (Some go for 100+ but the shorter application of heat). 50-60c (at max) what the phone could heat up to around the frame from the (SOC) heat dissipation wouldn't loosen up the glue like that.
That looks to me like just poor quality control after assembly. Mistakes happen, but their comment is hilarious.
Your device should still be under warranty. Contact Google for repair.

I'm glad yours is good! I have the feeling that like 99.9% are perfectly fine. I couldn't believe the rep really went with that response. They don't warranty cosmetic issues, but yet they stated a repair was under the warranty for it...which makes no sense. It's not cosmetic when a device started separating itself haha. Oh, Google, why are you like this?

4 reps and 3.5 hours of chat later, they will finally let me. However, because why not?, the replacement they have finally initiated is the wrong model. The one that has the issue is unlocked and they are trying to send me a carrier branded one. Showed them the original order as unlocked, and now that has been escalated to see if they can send the correct replacement device. I am losing hope that anyone knows what they're doing there. I had a a screen come loose on my original Pixel gen 1 and it was a 15 minute chat with a replacement in hand 48 hours later. Don't know why I'm having to fight so hard for this one, considering how new it is. I seldom ever return or exchange anything, so I find it frustrating.

YMMV

I'm completely stock for the record. It started last Friday, in the afternoon. No change in cell service (I was on WiFi anyways) and no new apps. Again, unmodified software. I was browsing Chrome and felt the heat through the case, which was a first. It happened 3 more times, 2 out and about on cell, and another time on WiFi. No intensive apps and I don't play games on my phone. I have pretty calloused hands and the last time it heated up, it was borderline uncomfortable to hold. I never downloaded an app to check the temp in hard numbers, but it was hotter than any phone I've ever owned. I was expecting it to shut down but it didn't. Last night I discovered the glass had begun separating and I can only attribute it to the heat, like you stated. When I gently press the corner, there is resistance before if comes back out. It's contacting something that is pushing it, which I why I'm concerned about battery swelling.

Your device should still be under warranty. Contact Google for repair.

I did and it has been hours of arguing with them. They are finally sending a replacement, but they are sending the incorrect variant. I suspect a few more hours of being angry are heading my way to get that sorted lol. I'm sure, eventually, we'll get there. I have never seen a company fight a hardware issue so hard. I know they aren't selling enough of these things to make such a stink about it. I actually prefer refurbs anyways, since they are more thoroughly checked than the randomized QC checks, but that was asking too much at first, apparently.
This is making me glad I didn't purchase direct from Google and another company is responsible for my potential manufacturing faults in the first 12 months.
There are a lot of complaints about Google's warranty process; just getting a request started is a pain, because their own website is not straightforward - every option assumes you can fix the device using a factory reset, and there's no link to start a warranty/RMA request; you have to contact them via phone/chat/email to start the process.
But on the other hand, there's a lot of success stories, too. My wife's Pixel 5a stopped working randomly - froze up, then turned off and wouldn't turn back on. No damage, no nothing, just went into QUSB mode for no apparent reason. Warranty was only valid for another month but Google covered the repair without question.

It's making me glad for you haha. Hopefully, you never have to cash in that need, either way

I completely agree with you. The only other time I needed them, they solved the issue quickly and effectively. It's one reason this experience stuck out as so off-putting to me. But man, are they ever making me work for this. I'm also fully aware that more people will talk about a negative experience vs a positive one. I feel like there is a lot more gatekeeping than there was before with their customer service. Every rep had to speak to someone else and I don't recall that being a thing before, especially with multiple pics highlighting the issue. I won't put a link since this is the P7P forums, but a Google search yielded a bevvy of reddit posts about the same issue on previous Pixels (Pixi?), some with overheating present and others not, with the exact same absurd response of "cosmetic damage." It's just weird move from such a big company.
Glad they took care of your wife's issue! It seems to be a lottery of what rep you get and what they are willing to do about it.
Sorry you're dealing with this. I had to RMA my first one due to screen issue and it was fairly painless. It's a glitch in their system that makes it show they're sending a Fi device. A redditor confirmed same thing happened with them, then the rep told me the same and indeed I got the unlocked variant as I expected.

I work for Dish Network and our dumb CSR's are never consistent. If you can't get 1 to cooperate, hang up and call back. Insane you needed FOUR reps to get something done

Thanks and that is very comforting to see it's just a glitch with the model display. Sorry you had to send one back too. I feel like they did really good with the hardware this year, which is what brought me back to a Pixel and this situation has kind of soured that haha. They did eventually do the right thing, so there is that, I suppose. They make such awesome phones and I hope that some day they can iron out the inconsistencies with how the handle the rare defective ones.

Haha that's what happened after the first one. I tried for the longest time to explain the situation, concerns, and provide evidence and they were literally copying and pasting the same responses once cosmetic damage was mentioned. The second one was more helpful but after I explained the issues I had with the first person I chatted with, they literally started doing the same thing. I feel like it's a long game approach to screw with people mentally so they just give up haha. They don't seem to read what you write.
Maybe Googs has changed something too, because every single one told me they'd have to speak to the next level of support to answer my questions and I couldn't help but feel like they don't actually have the authority to do anything at tier one without some other approval. Never been a fan of second hand information being related to decisions makers. By rep 3, I was too mad to let it go. Glad they finally fixed it but I'm still a little bitter. I hate bothering people and I am pretty reserved, so having to chase down that many folks so I can get basic customer service was frustrating.
