I would like to get a cheap phone for just listening to music and using running apps. I do not need to use it for phone calls, sms or anything, just wifi and gps.
I was leaning towards the Nexus one, S, but am open to other things. I am in Canada, so I don't know if getting US based carrier specific phones would work or not.
I would prefer to pay less than $100
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

What's the point of caring about if it's specifically on a network? Lol your using it only for GPS and WiFi. By the way how are you gonna get the GPS to work without data?

What about Google maps?
Sent from HTC ONE XL THAT SING THE BLUES
That's a good point, is GPS part of data/sim or is it part of the phone regardless of sim cards?
My primary app I use for running is run keeper which utilizes GPS. If I can't do GPS then I wouldn't bother getting a second phone. I already have a great phone, but I really want to avoid using it for running.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk HD
GPS always works no matter if you have a sim card in your phone or not. It is not dependent of it. You can try it yourself take your sim card out of your phone and turn on Gps. You will see it works just fine. I have a galaxy tab myself and it also has Gps support even without a sim card in it.
So to answer your question; it's part of the phone regardless of using a sim card or not.
About Google maps, it will be able to show your location and even give you a route description. The only thing that won't work without a data connection is navigation.

I say try E-Bay, and pick a seller with a good return policy.... I recently went through a couple phones, one of which was $50 and easy to repair.

Navigation is what I was trying to pin point lol. Though as long as your around a WiFi band or even use your current phone as a hotspot host, then any phone should be good for you! The nexus s is still kicking but if I was you I would at least aim for something with a 1ghz snapdragon processor, and 4.0 inches.

I see, but for those running apps there is no need for any navigation whatsoever. They just check how much you ran and so on, and to check that a Gps connection is enough.

To further explain, you can get apps like this free one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.navfree.android.OSM.USA that will let you download the maps when you are connected to Wi-Fi, and then use them without a sim or carrier connectivity.. Doing this, you can turn any Android with a working GPS into a personal GPS unit. I occasionally buy them off e-bay for $20-30, install that app, and give them away to people who suck at driving...
I'm looking for something on the smallish side. I legitimately will only use it for running and listening music. Something that is easy to hold in your hand is the ideal.

I don't exactly know how expensive a galaxy Y is as of now.(I bought it for 100 euros a year ago) But that might just be the solution for you. It is a small phone, easy on your hands and the Gps works great.

Ok,Here me out I know this has been asked but I have a different situation and reall y need input as of right now I've read so many reviews and heard so many diff opinions I just want some help on here.
Ok so I bought the shift 11 days ago and realized while I have no problems with it I do want the most out of my upgrade, that being said I turned my attention towards the nexus S, also by the way I only wanted to spend 100 dollars no more than that or I would've gotten the Evo 3d or some other dual core awesome phone. Anyways, I know I would give up the hardware keyboard but feel this is inevitable and something I will eventually do. However the NS has a faster processor, better screen, bigger screen, no crap sprint apps you cant get rid of and a forward facing camera which is a big positive for me.
Heres the deal though I never go against reviews and all the stats say that the Shift wins by like a whole start on every review site. That being said a sprint tech said they have more returns on shifts than the NS and that he loves his NS. So I go in considering the trade and the salesman comforted me saying he wouldn't make the trade. I took his advice then got home and thought well of course the salesman said that it'd be cheaper and they'd have to refund me about 50 bucks and a hundred in the long run. Also I read it has bad wifi problems is that true? I'm sorry for the disorder of this post, I'm just extremely frustrated and don't have much time.
SO I know this has been long, but in eveyones opinion what would you do? i know the NS feels cheaper but I mean does that matter? With a nice case, a zag full body cover and insurance should that matter? Also, the 16gb no sd card thing doesn't bother me I don't think I'll ever and never have exceeded 4gb.
I only have 2 days to decide.
Thanks everyone in advance
Idk about the wifi or reception issues since I have the GSM version but the nexus s is much better than the shift in every way unless u like hardware keyboards. Its not as flimsy as everyone makes it seem, its a really solid and well built phone. easy decision.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
HAve you rooted it? I really don't want to but heard that the reception was fixed with last upgrade BUT they also got rid of the free hotspot which sucks. Do you use the forward facing camera?? THis is a key feature to me I really want to be good. Thanks so much man I just don't know I really appreciate any input.

Yeah I rooted it since its so simple to do. Im running stock with a different kernel. Yeah I've used the front facer for Skype and gtalk, works well. I can't comment on the update for sprint because the update for GSM phones didn't stop the hotspot feature. But flashing a different rom will fix that for you and its really easy to do on this phone so you won't run into any difficulties.

Geez thanks so much seriously. I'm a noob at the concept of rooting my last phone was a shift and I couldn't stand it. I read the shift rooting info and was like no theres no way I can do this. Thanks!
OH and one last question it seems you can't push emails to it other than gmail is this true? I can't imagine this being true and the sprint tech said you could, just want to confirm with someone other than a sprint tech.

No reception or wifi issues I promise you. Return ur phone to Sprint and go to Best Buy you'll get the Nexus for free. Honestly would rather have this phone over the 3d or the photon. You won't be disappointed.
Edit, Best Buy is also selling the photon for 99 with the upgrade as well.

WOw thanks all so much, and all other comments much welcomed, I'd love to hear any other experiences with the forward cam thanks!
You could always just sell the Shift on eBay and buy a Nexus. I paid $225 for mine last week and I'm sure the price will drop even more in the very near future.

yea I think it will have ics after a month or two after the nexus prime comes out, but it will be the first single core to get ics. im pretty sure most of the single core phone wont even get ics but i could be wrong. lol
Do you think it will be able to properly run ICS? everything I've read says yes and that most likely hardware acceleration will actually make the NS faster and better, do you all agree with that?
I was in ths same boat as you. I came over from a hero read all ths reviews yada yada yada. I had no idea about root or anything. After doing a little but of reading I was able to root and Get the wireless hotspot back without any problems. Reception isn't bad at all on my phone, and I'm on wifi allll the time ABC it gets the sans signal strengths as my viao. As you said no bloatware to is great, along with knowing besides prime nexus a will get ICS before other phones. I had an eco for 3 days in a trial before the ns4g and am happy I switched. I am on the sprint network, and live in CO and even with where I work in the mountains hardly ever drop calls same with my widest nexus service reception is still great and fast enough to video chat which we do often and love on our phones using the front camera. Hope that helps!
I'm interested in getting a G2x... Looks like good hardware for a good price right now, but I had a few questions to see if it will fit my needs.
-I'm going to be using it wifi-only. I'm planning on installing CSipSimple to use as a VOIP phone. Anyone have experience doing this? On my Samsung moment CSipSimple has terrible issues routing audio and microphone.
-I would like to hook up my wiimote and plug the phone into my TV with HDMI for emulators... Has anyone had experience with doing this? Theoretically it looks like it should work flawless.
-I may in the future want to hook it up to voice/data. But on the cheap through a prepaid carrier like straight talk. You can get sims from straight talk, but will I have to unlock the phone? Is it even possible for this to work? Has anyone here done it before?
-Wifi only, what's the battery life like? Is a full day with moderate usage (screen-on 3 hours sporadic usage, wifi always on for voip calls) possible? Without cell connections I'd think it would last longer than normal.
-Any other issues with the phone that annoy people that might turn me off to the device?
Thanks!
i just ordered one of these, waiting for it to arrive at this very moment
i saw on the LG site a TON of bad reviews on this thing, a lot of them recent. things like the phone rebooting during a call, running hot, locking up to the point you have to remove the battery, bad battery life, and a few others.
but there were just as many good reviews too, best phone ever, no issues at all, etc. and some of those from people saying they have had their phone for over a few months, so i'm hoping mine will be fine
and i too am looking at what i can do with this device. i hope i will not be dissapointed
You came to the right place, the developers here have done a great job making this phone as stable as possible. They are, of course, limited by the LG code that they are working with, but the custom ROMs correct many issues. Of course, if you get a bad phone/bad hardware, not much can be done, but that's a risk with any phone.

Just flash custom ROMs, the hardware on this phone is amazing for such a cheap price, but LG can't code software for crap.
The stock ROM is guaranteed to give you rebooting, overheating, lock ups, bad battery life, etc...
But CM7 based ROMs (NOT CM9 BASED, CM9 IS NOT FINISHED) are all pretty rock solid stable. And even some of the 2.3.3 builds are good, Bionix Reloaded is the only 2.3.3 one that has been recently updated, but man Bionix is smooth as butter.
Have fun with your new powerhouse of a phone.

I can speak specifically to this one cuz I found out the hard way. You'll need to install a CyanogenMod7 based rom for this to work. Unless something has changed, the stock based ROMs don't have the necessary blue tooth profiles to connect a wiimote, sixaxis, etc. I was running Weapon G2x and my wiimote would not connect...so I switched to CM7 and it works.
With that said i love my phone and have little to no issues since I began running custom roms.

it's an app interface to http://www.google.com/voice
Google Voice is a (free!!) virtual phone service allowing you to make and receive calls/SMS for free from a web browser and forward these calls/SMS to any other phones you own.
GrooveIP is a VOIP app that connects to google voice via your cell phone's wifi connection, so you don't need to rely on a cell voice connection.
The Google Voice android app does the same thing for SMS.
Learn something new every day, thanks!

What can you do to the skyrocket to essentially not make it a phone, besides the obvious. Say i buy a new phone and never get rid of the skyrocket(i wouldnt dare leave the skyrocket ) What could you put on it to say JUST make it an media player? No other apps, no home screen. You just turn it on and it will only play music to a customized UI like a microsoft zune(i had when it first came out). Or maybe you just wanted a camera. etc.. Yes, you can delete files that you dont need put it in airplane mode bla blah blah. Thats not what i am looking for.
I don't know if anyone would see use for it besides me, but i wanted to see. I know this could be possible and maybe you can call me crazy.

There's actually no need to give it up as a phone, even if you remove the SIM card. I have two main devices that I alternate between, my Skyrocket and my HTC Vivid. I have GrooveIP installed on both. This app allows you to use a device to make calls over wifi or your cell data network so you do not need a SIM inserted to make calls as long as you have wifi available. This way I can simply put the SIM in whichever device I decide to carry on any given day, and leave the other behind at home to send and receive calls over wifi when I am there. And this way both devices are fully functional with all of their capabilities at all times.
There's no need to cripple either device when you have this option (GrooveIP) available for only a few bucks from the Play Store. Actually my use of GrooveIP goes way deeper than that, as you can easily see by the list of devices in my sig.
With this one app, and possibly one more (TextPlus), you can keep as many phones fully functional that you may so desire.

I guess this is a useless question im asking, what do they say dream big or go home?

If you can figure out a way to register a media player as the default launcher, that would probably be enough, no?
The phone has an OS so do music players. So finding a way to install an OS from a music player on it shouldn't be impossible. It's like stripping a windows machine and then installing linux no? So getting some OS off of an MP3 player and looking at what it needs as far as file structure would be a good place to start. I have two phones and since I've gotten the Rocket my SGS4G has basically become my MP3 player. I get about 12 hours out of it with airplane mode just playing tunes. If I could replace the OS with something dedicated to music and get more time I would make that trade off. Especially if you could still flash back to an Android OS.

Okay so are we talking about porting a OS/ROM from a music player? I wonder who the best Dev to talk to about this is? Im no expert in this subject or else i would have done something by now . If we got more people interested im sure a dev would support it right?
There's actually a ROM project out there for almost this exact concept! I read the OP once here on xda. Let me search for it and see if I can find it. And the idea was exactly this: to take an old phone and flash this ROM to basically turn it into a Zune, so that its main purpose became an mp3 player. Let me look for it...

I had to fight with UPS today for 2 hours, but I got my Galaxy Note 5. In short, I'm glad I got it. I'm sure, like always, each carrier will have their differences, but this is one SLICK SEXY phone.
Out the box I had 25%, I burned through it just doing app updates and setting up my information on the phone and then I tried the Wireless Charging...Guys, it's good! Like really good! I don't even have the Fast Wireless Charging dock. I have the Samsung Galaxy Mini Wireless Charging Pad and that finished up in just over 2 hours, so that Fast Wireless Charger is going to charge as fast as the end of a Prom date. Don't prejudge the phone over what you heard. Use it.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Guess u don't use much storage, that's why u don't have a problem with it. And of course you're going to notice a decent bump in performance coming from a note 3. I've warned everyone I know to not upgrade to the 5 and either get a note 4, or don't drop their 4 cause of Samsung pulling them.
I had to fight with ups as well. Somehow ups got my address wrong... It was either ups or Sprint. Either way I have it.

Do you get simultaneous voice and data (without wifi) or is it crippled like the note 4?

Sprint doesn't have VoLTE yet into their network.

i use tons of storage... i carry at least 8TB of hard drives everyday. i just don't install many apps and music is all cloud based now for me. movies are kept on a segate wifi drive, i always have a otg adapter and flash ready, but most of the time i just stream netflix/amazon. the majority of my internal storage on my devices are now roms or flashing related crap.
because of the number of devices i have i find it easier to do it the way i do rather than have redundant info on multiple devices - still happens sometimes and i forget which tablet/phone has a certain movie or song... still can find my damn Fried Chicken from Beatnuts!
i started not using an external sd when i got my s4, just as a test, and it worked out for me. so getting an n6 and n9 wasn't too much trouble as i knew what to expect.
though i do think the removal of the SD slot isn't b/c they studied that most people don't use it, but rather that people are suckers and will toss an extra $100 for 32GB.

Totally agree with this. Iphone suckers have been dealing with this the whole time. I've only have known like 2 iPhone users that would pay all that money for a 128 gb iPhone. Most got the 16 or 32 gb versions and became very limited on what they put on their phone.
just got my order in. not time to play with it yet. damn, i forgot that samsung switched to 16:9 ratio. makes this thing less massive than i thought (huge negative for me). it's the same width as the note 2 but ~3/16 taller.

The funny thing is that i could do this with my note 3. My daughters had motorola Photon and the other had an Evo LTE and both of those phones could do it. So im not sure how Sprint claims that their network doesnt support it when it clearly can

Tri-band phones are not supported for talk/talk at same time. Sprint Spark did this
Sprint can't even get the listing of the processor correct.
Just went to the sprint store to look at it. Here's the sign showing the specs.

Wasn't asking about volte as that is not phone related at this time. Was asking if the phone itself was capable, as in dual radios.
Guess I'll stay on my note for the foreseeable future. Samsung and Sprint both going backwards. Sucks.
How to root?

How are the radio and antenna. Are you picking up better signal

I now get lte in my basement which I didn't get on my note 3, so I would say yes for me at least. I can stream videos and watch YouTube in my room now finally. I'm very happy with this device. I just had to put all of my music on Google play store and put my pictures on one drive and I now have plenty of free storage space and am not at all worried about no SD card at this point. I did get the 64gb

That shouldn't be up, stores were directed to take that sign down.

Anyone elses wireless keep dropping as soon as you try to connect to something? I've factory reset 3 times now to try and see if it fixes it -no go. As soon as I try and download/run a speed test it disconnects.
g3/g4/note 5/ipad all connect fine with no issue, as well as 4 chromecasts.
On the other note, Android Pay launched and let me add cards to it.
I got no issues with connecting to wireless other then it disconnects sometime when phone is asleep.
How did you get android pay to work ? It launches for me but it doesn't let me add any cards.
No issues with mine... Have you tried restarting your router and then, your phone?

Indeed, connectivity cycles when you are on the initial setup program as well, bluetooth, nfc and wireless both go in and out (icons for bluetooth and nfc go on and off, wireless drops completely). Quite annoying. Already got a return going with Amazon, sucks since I just got it this morning.

Missed the android pay part - no clue, it let me re-add my debit card with no issues. I have installed the HTC sense package/launcher from fulmics though.

I am using the HTC Sense package and no luck with Android Pay. Oh, well!
Wow. I have absolutely no connection problems at all. I would be hollering loudly here if that were the case. I'm on WiFi at home right now no problem but post on my breaks from work from LTE with no problem. I've had no issues at all. I would consider an exchange perhaps.

Yeap, it was sent back on Tuesday. I just ordered a grey one as they came in stock on Amazon, hoping to get it Monday. I honestly likes what I saw with the phone, I havent been happy with any phones this year so far. Had a s6, g4, note 5, flex 2, mulitple nexus 6's (all with screen issues or backplate issues), iphone 6 etc. Hopefully this is the one, that helio x10 was pretty damn quick in it.
Hope that grey one arrives soon! People have been waiting for them. I really like this phone and am doing well with it after frustrations with dual SIM slots on the Zenfone 2 that involved getting a refurbished exchange unit sent to me, turned out all to be the 2G slot being the issue so it was returned. weeks of frustrations! So here's to good fortune!

swap sims
take sim card out and put it in Sim 2 ... getting data will be a little trick - for some reason I always have to go in setting and enable data - it won't enable automatically... but i think it will help ...
You can either keep it in Sim 2 or move it back to sim 1...
